CBS News poll: 25 years after 9/11, most see a changed country and some success fighting terrorism

    September 9, 2026 5:00 PM EDT / CBS News
By Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus

Twenty-five years later, Americans view the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, as a defining event — one that fundamentally changed the country and that needs to be remembered.

As people look back, they see a different country today in some ways. Most feel there is less unity now than at the time of the attacks, though many think that the U.S. would unify as it did 25 years ago if another terror attack from overseas were to happen today.

In response to the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. launched a military campaign often referred to as the “war on terrorism.” Today, most feel that campaign has been at least somewhat successful, although some uneasiness remains.

There are many today who weren’t born or were too young to remember 9/11. They have since come to learn about the attacks in school and from teachers and from family and friends, as well.

But even if they don’t remember it very well personally, most younger adults do recognize 9/11 as a consequential event. Most of them, like the public overall, believe those attacks changed the country forever, although it’s older Americans who especially feel it’s very important that people continue to remember that day.

Another indication of the event’s significance is that roughly a quarter of Americans say they have visited a 9/11 memorial or museum, including both younger and older people.

War on terrorism: Most see some success

In the 25 years since 9/11, most Americans feel U.S. actions to reduce terrorism have been at least somewhat successful, and many feel those efforts have made the U.S. safer.

People are not without some concern, however. While few feel personally “in danger” from terrorism, many continue to feel “somewhat uneasy” — similar to how they felt five years ago when the country marked 20 years since the attacks.

People were on edge in the years immediately following the attacks — most believed another terrorist attack in the U.S. was likely to happen.

Today, the country is divided on whether the U.S. is adequately prepared to deal with a terrorist attack in the U.S. Opinions on this are driven partly by political partisanship, perhaps reflecting people’s views of the current administration. Most Republicans think the U.S. is prepared, while most Democrats and independents don’t think it is.

Sept. 11, 2001: Then and now

Americans do see changes in the U.S. since the attacks. Compared to that time, people feel there’s more security today, but feel there’s less privacy. Notably, they see less unity.

In the aftermath of 9/11, CBS News polling in 2001 found most Americans at the time critiqued security at airports, among other things, and the public supported the federal government taking on an increased role in airport security.

It has been said that the country became more unified after the 9/11 attacks. By one measure, Americans did rally behind their president. After the attacks, President George W. Bush’s job approval rating soared to 90% in early October 2001 — the highest approval rating for a sitting president to date in CBS News polling.

At the time, there was also near-universal support for U.S. military action against those responsible for the attacks, a measure of bipartisan unity that is rarely seen today on other issues, including military actions.

About half of the country believes that if a terror attack from overseas happened today, Americans would be just as united as they were after 9/11, or more so. But 40% feel the nation would not come together in the same way — particularly those who personally remember the 9/11 attacks very well.

This CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 2,373 U.S. adults interviewed between September 1-4, 2026. The sample was weighted to be representative of adults nationwide according to gender, age, race, and education, based on the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Current Population Survey, as well as 2024 presidential vote. The margin of error is ±2.3 points.

LOS ANGELES, Sept 9 (Reuters) – The Port of Los Angeles set a new three-month volume record during June, July and August after retailers rushed in goods to avoid new tariffs and higher fuel costs, the executive director ‌of the nation’s busiest ocean container port said on Wednesday.

Halloween costumes, Thanksgiving decor and Hanukkah and Christmas gifts are among the goods that surged into to U.S. seaports a few months earlier than usual this year after importers raced to front-run President Donald Trump’s tariffs replacing those struck down by the courts and shipping contract fuel cost increases tied to the Iran war.

Waterfront workers at the Port of Los Angeles handled 955,907 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in August, taking the three-month total to 2.9 million TEUs – beating the previous record set during the COVID-19 shipping boom.

Retailers traditionally account for nearly half of container shipping volume. Economists, financial analysts and traders analysts monitor ocean container imports because they reflect the health of the consumer-spending-dependent US economy.

“June was probably our peak,” Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, ‌said during a media briefing focused on holiday imports.

“A good chunk of it is already here, but we’ll see that continue to flow in the next couple of months,” said Brian Dodge, CEO of the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), said of holiday-related imports.

Some imports were delayed due to severe weather in China and some rerouting away from the Panama Canal amid potential drought conditions there, said Jonathan Gold, vice president for supply chain and customs policy at the National Retail Federation (NRF).

“Consumers keep buying despite tariffs, inflation and high fuel prices, and retailers keep bringing in merchandise to meet demand,” Gold said.

“There’s cause for optimism as we head into the back half of this year, and certainly retail Super Bowl, which is the holiday shopping season,” RILA’s Dodge said of the year-end retail period that can make or break company profits.

Fetterman appears at RNC midterm convention in surprise video, vows to work with Trump on steel

Democratic Sen. John Fetterman appeared in a surprise video at the Republican Party’s midterm convention on Wednesday, as he becomes increasingly isolated from his own party.

“Why am I here talking to you today? Because, well, I’m a common-sense Democrat,”the Pennsylvania senator said in a one-minute prerecorded video introducing GOP Sen. Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania. “I’m always going to stand with America. I’m always going to reject the extremes in socialism and that anti-American way of life.”

Standing in front of Western Pennsylvania’s Mon Valley Works steel mill, Fetterman said, “we’ll work with President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life right here in the Steel Valley.”

“How great is John Fetterman?” McCormick said after taking the stage, praising the Democrat for his “friendship” and “courage.”

Mr. Trump cleared the way last year for U.S. Steel to be acquired by Japan-based Nippon Steel. The president and members of both parties, including Fetterman, had initially opposed Nippon’s efforts to buy the iconic Pittsburgh-based steelmaker, but Mr. Trump ultimately signed off on an agreement that he argued would result in tens of billions in new investments in U.S. Steel and grant the federal government a “golden share” in the company.

Fetterman has, at times, distanced himself from the Democrats, backing Mr. Trump’s strategy in Iran and breaking with congressional Democrats in last year’s government shutdown fight.

After Mr. Trump won the 2024 election, Fetterman became the first Senate Democrat to meet with the incoming president at his Palm Beach residence.

“I think it’s pretty reasonable that if the president would like to have a conversation — or invite someone to have a conversation — to have it. And no one is my gatekeeper,” Fetterman told CBS News in January 2025.

He has denied that he is considering switching parties. In an op-ed in May, he said, “I’d be a terrible Republican who still votes overwhelmingly with Democrats.” But he said his red line is if the Democratic Party becomes “the anti-Israel party.”

If Fetterman were to switch parties, it would be harder for Democrats to reclaim the Senate majority. Democrats currently need to flip four seats in November to win control.

US states sue Trump administration for weakening endangered species protections

    • States challenge narrowed definition of harm, rules allegedly putting business over animal protections
    • Endangered Species Act credited with saving bald eagle, other animals from extinction
    • Interior Department objects to ‘regulatory overreach,’ says it should follow law’s text

Sept 9 (Reuters) – U.S. states filed two lawsuits on Wednesday accusing President Donald Trump’s administration of illegally weakening the federal Endangered Species Act, a landmark law that has shielded the bald eagle and other wildlife from dangers posed by development.

The lawsuits by the Democratic attorneys general of 20 states and Washington, D.C. were filed less than two months after the Department of the Interior and the Department of Commerce announced final rules that could make it easier for developers, fossil fuel companies and others to disturb lands that environmental advocates say need protection from business interests.

In one lawsuit, the states challenged a rule that narrowed the Endangered Species Act’s definition of “harm,” which had long included encroachments on habitats where endangered animals live. The new rule allows oil drilling, mining and other activities in those habitats so long as those activities do not directly kill or injure the animals.

The other lawsuit challenges two rules. One rule eliminates broad protections for newly threatened species unless the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, part of the Interior Department, creates species-specific protections. The second rule requires the government to consider objections by businesses before declaring areas as “critical habitats.”

“The Trump administration is trying to undermine the law, the will of Congress and the will of the people who overwhelmingly support protections for endangered species,” Washington Attorney General Nick Brown said at a press conference. “Instead of stewardship, this administration’s approach to our land, to our water is one of exploitation.”

    INTERIOR DEPARTMENT RESISTS ‘OVERREACH’

Both lawsuits were filed in federal courts in northern California, targeting actions by the Fish and Wildlife Service and by the National Marine Fisheries Service, part of the Commerce Department.

Copies of the complaints were not immediately available. Environmental groups have also sued to block the revised definition of harm.

“The role of federal agencies is to faithfully implement the Endangered Species Act as written, not to expand its reach through interpretations favored by advocacy organizations,” an Interior Department spokesperson said.

“This lawsuit seeks ‌to preserve a decades-old regulatory overreach that expanded the Endangered Species Act beyond the authority granted by Congress,” the spokesperson added. “The department will vigorously defend its authority to implement the law according to its plain text.”

A spokesperson for the fisheries service said that agency does not discuss pending litigation.

Democratic-led states have filed dozens of lawsuits challenging sweeping policy changes during the second White House term of Trump, a Republican.

FUTURE GENERATIONS BENEFIT FROM LAW, STATE AG SAYS

Enacted by Congress in 1973, the Endangered Species Act has been credited with saving animals including the California condor, grizzly bear and humpback whale from possible extinction.

Weakening the law aligns with Trump’s goal to reduce regulations that he says constrain American businesses.

These include the scaling back of a variety of environmental initiatives and standards, including by reducing government support for clean energy and repealing a scientific finding by former President Barack Obama’s administration that climate change threatens public health.

Many wildlife advocates consider habitat loss the biggest cause of animal extinction.

“We owe future generations a world where bald eagles soar, sea turtles swim and all wildlife thrives,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement.

    LESS DEFERENCE TO FEDERAL AGENCIES

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has said the Endangered Species Act has been “weaponized” to stop a myriad of projects, weakening competitiveness, undermining national security, and hurting Americans’ pocketbooks.

He has said the new rules more closely align the law with its original intent.

The changes follow the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in 2024 to overrule a 40-year-old precedent that required courts to defer to federal agencies’ reasonable interpretations of laws they administer.

Wednesday’s lawsuits were led by Washington State, California, Maryland and Massachusetts. Other plaintiffs include New York, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Zelenskyy’s plane almost hit by drone en route to Norway king’s funeral, prime minister says

    2026-09-09 15:15:18 EDT / CBS/AFP

A plane carrying Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy from Moldova to Oslo for the funeral of Norway’s King Harald V was almost hit by a drone, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store said Wednesday.

“His flight was almost hit by a drone when it was taking off from Moldova. That is the reality he lives in,” Store told Norwegian public broadcaster NRK.

He provided no other details about the incident.

A source in the Ukrainian presidency offered a more nuanced account, telling AFP: “It was an alert in Moldova when a Russian (drone) entered Moldovan and Romanian airspace.”

The source described as “exaggerated” the claim that Zelenskyy was at risk.

The Ukrainian leader arrived in Oslo on Tuesday evening, when he held talks with Store, Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg and Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide on Norwegian military aid, including air defense support, and civilian assistance.

On Wednesday, Zelenskyy joined a host of other foreign dignitaries for the funeral of Harald, who died on Aug. 28 at the age of 89.

Also present were the heir to the British throne, Prince William, and Japan’s Crown Prince Akishino, as well as political leaders from more than 20 countries.

Zelenskyy left Norway after the funeral for Canada and talks with leaders there, Store told NRK.
