Trump urges Supreme Court to overturn E. Jean Carroll’s $83M defamation verdict

President Donald Trump on Tuesday urged the Supreme Court to once again step into his messy legal brawl with magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll, appealing an $83.3 million jury verdict for defamation on the grounds that, as president, he is immune from the litigation.

The appeal, which has not yet been docketed at the high court, relies heavily on the court’s 2024 decision granting the president wide immunity for actions taken in office.

“This is the first case in our nation’s history in which a court has imposed damages liability on a president for his conduct in office,” Trump’s attorneys told the high court, according to a copy of the appeal reviewed by CNN. “Yet, in upholding the exorbitant $83.3 million defamation judgment here, the Second Circuit never even decided whether presidential immunity applies.”

Trump told the justices that an appeals court decision in Carroll’s favor would “cause significant damage, not only to this president and future presidents” but also the nation.

In addition to raising the prospect that Trump should be immune from the litigation, Trump is also asking the court to review whether the United States government should be the defendant rather than the president.

“Here, the president of the United States has been ordered to pay nearly $100 million in damages … for issuing a press release and answering reporters’ questions, from the White House, defending against attacks on his fitness for office,” his attorneys told the court.

Attorneys for Carroll declined to comment.

The latest appeal comes weeks after the Supreme Court declined to take up a separate case from Trump in which the president is seeking to unwind a $5 million civil verdict that found he sexually abused and defamed Carroll at a Bergdorf Goodman department store in the 1990s.

Trump has denied wrongdoing in both cases.

The new appeal involves statements Trump made against Carroll in 2019, when he was president, that a jury found were defamatory and ordered him to pay $83 million in damages. A federal appeals court panel affirmed the damages award, finding it “reasonable in light of the extraordinary and egregious facts” and rejected several of Trump’s legal challenges. Among them, the appeals court found that Trump had previously waived any claim of presidential immunity and said the Supreme Court’s decision in 2024 involving presidential immunity did not alter their view.

The full 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals declined to revisit that decision in late April.

At that time, one of the appeals court judges who sided with Carroll wrote that Trump had first brought up his immunity claims far too late in the litigation.

“Presidential immunity was not raised for the first three years of this case,” wrote US Circuit Judge Denny Chin, who was nominated to the bench by President Barack Obama. Chin also resisted Trump’s effort to have the United States substituted as a defendant, writing that “no other defendant would be permitted to move to substitute the United States in his place, fifteen months after trial and the entry of judgment against him.”

Both Trump and the Department of Justice signaled at that time that they would appeal to the Supreme Court. The president said he would raise claims of immunity from civil claims for “official acts” as president.

The Justice Department said that it intended to intervene to effectively take over the case under the Westfall Act, which shields individual federal employees from tort suits for actions taken while they were engaged with their official duties. Normally, that might put federal taxpayers on the hook for an employee’s actions, though in this case it would almost certainly mean the end of Carroll’s defamation case.

Because the Supreme Court is not in session over the summer, it will not consider the president’s appeal until the fall. If it agrees to hear the case, then it would not likely hand down a decision until next June.

Carroll claims Trump defamed her when, in 2019, he denied the assault, said she wasn’t his type, and claimed she made it up to boost sales of a book.

“There were no eyewitnesses, no video evidence, and no police report or investigation,” Trump told the Supreme Court in the appeal he filed last year in the case involving the $5 million verdict. “Instead, Carroll waited more than 20 years to falsely accuse Donald Trump, who she politically opposes, until after he became the 45th president, when she could maximize political injury to him and profit for herself.”

Trump, meanwhile, is continuing to fight a separate, $5 million case involving Carroll. After sitting on Trump’s appeal in that matter for months, the court denied it during the final days of its term last month. Trump has made a long-shot request for the high court to reconsider that decision but a federal judge ordered the release of the money to Carroll.

How Trump drafted upcoming renovations for Washington Dulles, a “terrible airport”

As he fiddled with ideas earlier this year for how to rejuvenate Washington Dulles International Airport, the capital’s aging federally owned airport, President Trump asked a handful of the design and engineering firms competing for the contract to create three-dimensional models so that he could better picture the designs, multiple sources told CBS News.

The hefty tabletop models were taken back and forth to the White House multiple times for the president’s perusal and his edits to plans for the terminal transport buses, parking lot location, baggage handling system, underground trains and general airport aesthetic, sources told CBS News.

This week, Mr. Trump intends to publicly reveal his plans, two of the sources said. He was scheduled to make a formal announcement Wednesday from the Oval Office with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, but the timeline could shift.

Mr. Trump has called Dulles a “terrible airport” that “was incorrectly designed.” Privately, the president has vented about “parking that’s two miles away” and has called the current mobile lounge transportation system “crazy,” sources told CBS News.

It’s the latest makeover the president has dabbled in during his second term, after the White House East Wing and new ballroom, Kennedy Center, and various parks in Washington.

His preferred that the new Dulles design preserve the iconic sloped-roof main terminal, designed by Eero Saarinen, but would refurbish the interior with an open foyer and new ticket kiosks for the airlines, one of the sources said.

The $22.5 billion renovation will scrap the mobile lounges, colloquially called “people movers” and arguably the most unpopular component of the international airport. They have been used at Dulles since 1962.

A new underground U-shaped aerotrain will bring travelers to their terminals, along with moving sidewalks. The existing aerotrain only serves the A, B and C concourses, and not the D concourse where the United Airlines gates are located. More moving sidewalks are also going to be added.

The plans include a major terminal expansion: Four new linear concourses where the current A, B, C and D gates are. The C and D gates, constructed in 1985, were meant to be temporary terminals for United Airlines but have remained in place for over 40 years.

The new design will move the parking lot closer to the main terminal for travel convenience.

In recent months, Mr. Trump hosted charrettes, calling in executives from development and finance companies to the Oval Office to make pitches, and he hounded his advisers by phone with suggestions, according to sources familiar with the conversations.

Roughly 30 proposals were submitted for the project, including HNTB, STV Group, Jacobs, Ferrovial, and AECOM, one of the firms that is working on the president’s White House ballroom project.

Ferrovial, which most recently developed the new Terminal 1 at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, proposed a new main terminal that featured a wavy roof design. Mr. Trump rejected that.

Jacobs’ proposal included a bridge that passengers would cross to go between terminals and that would be built high enough that planes could pass underneath, but the president disliked the design of the bridge.

An HNTB design was the most dramatic – essentially a new airport built from scratch with an additional main terminal at the other end of the property. Mr. Trump thought it would be cumbersome to rebuild while keeping plane traffic moving.

BlackRock’s proposal was all-encompassing, offering to finance the renovations and complete the build, according to sources familiar with the bid. The asset management giant proposed operating the airport, too, wresting control away from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, and taking its revenues. That plan was found to have multiple complications. United Airlines, the primary airline serving Dulles and carrying roughly two-thirds of daily passengers, opposed the BlackRock takeover.

The president ultimately chose a design that builds on the existing infrastructure and works with United. Scott Kirby, the airline’s CEO, met with Mr. Trump about the project, according to sources.

Under the Trump-backed concept for Dulles, MWAA – which has the authority to issue tax-free bonds – would finance the project. United would contract for the new build and then pay back the financing of the bonds through airport operations.

The existing runways would not need to be changed under the United proposal, which was part of the reason why the president backed this plan, one of the sources said.

There will be separate requests for proposals for public-private partnerships to develop the land side of the airport renovations, including a proposed convention center and new parking lots.

But it’s the demise of the mobile lounges that’s likely to catch the attention of Dulles’ frequent flyers, one of whom referred to the people movers as a “mobile torture chamber.”

In an emotional farewell Tuesday, President Donald Trump paid tribute to the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., recounting how their relationship evolved from fierce political foes into close allies and friends.

Trump said the turning point came after he publicly revealed Graham’s cellphone number during a campaign rally in Bluffton, S.C., in 2015 — a decision he acknowledged Tuesday was a mistake.

“As you remember, Lindsey and I did not exactly get off to the best of starts,” Trump said during his eulogy address at the Washington National Cathedral, adding that Graham had said something “nasty” when they were both running for the 2016 presidential nomination.

“So naturally, I did something that I shouldn’t have done,” the president continued. “I shared his personal cellphone number with the millions of people that happened to be watching that particular day as I made a speech, a very important speech.”

“His phone exploded. He said, ‘I had that number for 20 years.’ His phone totally — I don’t know what he did with it. But it exploded,” Trump said. “That was the beginning of a friendship, in a way.”

“But it was Lindsey who had the last laugh, because while I blew up his phone all for one day, we became great friends and Lindsey did not stop calling me for the next 10 years,” Trump continued.

The unlikely friendship grew to include frequent rounds of golf and late-night phone calls as Graham became a leading advocate for Trump’s legislative agenda.

Since Graham’s death earlier this month, Trump has repeatedly spoken about the senator’s constant presence in his life.

And before the service began, before the cameras began rolling, before the speeches, and before Graham’s casket arrived, the Washington National Cathedral became a gathering place for those who the late lawmaker knew, worked alongside, advocated for, and, at times, fought.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, two of Graham’s closest allies on the world stage, both attended — holding court separately among the sea of lawmakers and Cabinet members filing into the cathedral.

Much of the Senate attended, too, including Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., who wore a suit. A rare sight not seen even at Trump’s second inauguration.

Meanwhile, Trump’s affection for Graham was visible throughout his remarks.

He called him a “beloved friend, a devoted brother, a respected statesman, a giant of the United Senate, and a true American original who left us much too soon.”

Senate confirms Jay Clayton as Trump’s next intelligence chief

Washington — The Senate on Tuesday confirmed Jay Clayton to lead the nation’s intelligence agencies in a party-line vote that could be the key to unlock a path forward on a key surveillance authority that lapsed more than six weeks ago.

The Senate voted 51 to 47 to install Clayton as director of national intelligence. He replaces Bill Pulte, a controversial housing official with no intelligence experience whom President Trump appointed to the role temporarily. The appointment led Democrats to walk away from a bipartisan deal to reauthorize a warrantless spy tool known as Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

“I hope this will encourage my colleagues to stop blocking reauthorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a South Dakota Republican, said Monday on the Senate floor.

Democrats initially praised the selection of Clayton, who was until recently the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, to oversee the intelligence community. Mr. Trump announced the pick just hours before Section 702 was set to expire in mid-June, and Republicans moved quickly to confirm him as they tried to break the stalemate on the spy authority. But Mr. Trump upended those plans shortly before he was set to appear for his confirmation hearing last month, surprising Republicans.

Clayton appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee — about a month later than originally planned — on July 15, where he declined to say outright that former President Joe Biden won the 2020 election, angering Democrats. Clayton repeatedly said Biden was “certified” as the president.

In a statement Tuesday, Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Clayton “now has an opportunity — and the responsibility — to demonstrate that intelligence will never be shaped to fit a political narrative.”

“Having known and worked with Jay for years, I was encouraged when he was first nominated for the position of DNI. Unfortunately, I came away from his confirmation process with serious reservations about whether he would be willing to stand up to political pressure when it matters most,” Warner said. “Now that he has been confirmed, I sincerely hope he proves those concerns unfounded, because the Intelligence Community deserves steadier leadership than it has received in recent months.”

Even with Clayton confirmed, an extension of the spy statute is likely to remain lapsed for a while longer. The Senate is scheduled to be in town through next week and isn’t expected to return before Sept. 14. The House is already on a five-week recess and is scheduled to be back in Washington on Aug. 31.

Jay Clayton, President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the US intelligence community who was confirmed in a 51-47 vote on Tuesday night, steps into his new job inheriting a diminished office whose authority and relevance are at a historic low point.

The new director of national intelligence succeeds Bill Pulte, a combative and controversial housing executive with no national security experience whom Trump installed as acting director for a 40-day tenure.

The worst fears of Pulte’s critics — that he would use his access to classified intelligence to persecute the president’s political enemies, fears that several senators described as encouraging a swift confirmation of Clayton — did not come to pass. Pulte did accelerate sharp staffing cuts that Trump had ordered and critics argued would hamstring the intelligence community, but there is broad bipartisan agreement that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence had become too large, too bloated. Some Republican Senate Intelligence staffers, who had been concerned initially over Pulte’s appointment and lack of experience, later said they were pleased with the work Pulte had done to cut some of that bloat.

Clayton, whose legal career centered on corporate law before serving as a US attorney under Trump, must now chart a course for an organization that struggled with its mandate even before Donald Trump and his allies made it their top “Deep State” target.

What seems most likely, current and former officials say, is that Clayton is going to oversee its obsolescence.

“They haven’t really rethought the things it does, they’ve just fired people,” said Mike Casey, the former director of the counterintelligence office at the ODNI and a former Democratic staff director on the Senate Intelligence Committee. The ODNI, he said, is “sinking slowly beneath the waves.”

The ODNI did not immediately respond to a request for comment about changes to the office during the second Trump administration. The CIA declined to comment.

Clayton has limited formal experience in intelligence, although he has dealt with some related issues beginning early during Trump’s second term as the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York , which prosecutes a large number of terrorism cases. And the role of the president’s top intelligence advisor is already effectively filled by CIA Director John Ratcliffe.

Ratcliffe — who recommended Clayton for the job and helped shape Pulte’s time in office by pushing back on some potentially more extreme actions, according to some sources — appears likely to retain his position as the administration’s leading voice on intelligence matters.

In a debate over the release of classified documents related to foreign interference in the 2020 election last week, Pulte and Ratcliffe got into a heated dispute over the scope of redactions in the documents the White House planned to release, according to four sources familiar with the exchange. Pulte argued to make more of the text public, according to those sources. Both parties raised their voices, the sources said.

But ultimately, Pulte backed down and demonstrably began to defer to Ratcliffe, the sources said.

It was an episode that highlighted the authority of the CIA director — and the relative lack of power of the DNI.

“I’m not 100 percent clear why [Clayton] took the job, candidly,” Casey said. “You’re US Attorney for SDNY. ODNI probably smaller than SDNY now, with less actual work and is less relied on right now.”

Asked about the episode, White House Spokesman Davis Ingle said in a statement, “Bill Pulte is a patriot who a great job carrying out the President’s agenda as acting Director of National Intelligence. Efforts by the legacy media to sow internal division are a distraction that will not work. As the permanent Director of National Intelligence, Jay Clayton will deliver timely, independent, and reliable intelligence that our Nation depends on to keep Americans safe.”

The intelligence community has been a longstanding source of grievance for the president, who believes that he was undermined during his first term by a “deep state” of officials who were behind the “Russia hoax” — the investigation into his 2016 campaign’s ties to Russia — and he entered office vowing to bring it to heel.

A White House source said that Trump was very happy with the job Pulte did cutting positions, but whether the president considers the job finished remains to be seen. Top Republicans, including Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton of Arkansas, have made no secret of the fact that they want to see the ODNI even further reduced.

Clayton demurred during his confirmation hearing on the question of cuts, offering no detailed vision for the future of the agency.

“It will have a very challenging rebuild (post Trump),” said one US official familiar with the changes. “Or it will be eliminated in its current form.”

It does some very “unsexy, important things,” Casey said. It sets security standards for classified rooms, for example, so personnel from different agencies can work in the same facilities. It has unique authorities to fuse domestic and foreign intelligence to identify threats.

But in practice, its relevance and authority — in particular relative to the CIA, whose director used to act as the leader of the whole community — has ebbed and flowed depending on the administration.

Clayton is a Trump administration survivor; the DNI post will be his third job across two administrations.

And he does have some bipartisan clout on Capitol Hill. A number of Democrats initially welcomed Trump’s selection of Clayton in June, citing his experience as the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York and a former chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission. But many soured on his nomination after his confirmation hearing two weeks ago, when he sidestepped questioning from Democrats on whether Joe Biden “won” the 2020 presidential election. He would only testify that Biden was “certified” as the president, deepening fears among Democrats that he would politicize intelligence to satisfy the beliefs of the president.

Still, some Democrats expressed relief this week that Clayton would soon replace Pulte. “We’ve got to get a new DNI in,” Warner told reporters Monday. Warner said he would not support Clayton’s confirmation but called him a “vast improvement.”

Clayton steps into an office that still could play a significant role in shaping US intelligence. “Clayton is inheriting an organization that still has some capacity to do things, if he chooses to actually utilize the people that work for him,” the US official said.

But current and former officials alike say it has been deeply degraded — and Clayton was vague about his plans during his confirmation hearing.

The National Intelligence Council, the top office that is responsible for presenting the consensus judgment of the intelligence community for policymakers, is “severely understaffed,” the US official said. The ODNI is traditionally staffed by intelligence officers on loan from other agencies and the turmoil has meant that it has become more difficult to recruit even for posts that the current administration might wish to keep. It has gone from being a desired posting to a place to be avoided.

Moral is “horrible,” the US official said. “People are shell shocked and living in fear of the next round of cuts.”

Exactly how deep the cuts run is difficult to gauge. Pulte announced on Tuesday a fifth and “near final” round of firings, claiming in a post on X that the dismissals had cumulatively axed “approximately 30%” of staff at the top spy agency; his predecessor Tulsi Gabbard had previously announced that she planned to cut the workforce, then around 2,000 people, by 40%.

CNN was not able to independently confirm those figures and Rachel Cohen, a spokeswoman for the Democratic Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mark Warner of Virginia, said Pulte has “so far declined to provide the Senate Intelligence Committee with the information necessary to assess the accuracy of those statements or the basis for those decisions.”

Even those who support the agency broadly caution against too much hysteria about the depth of the cuts. Some parts of the agency had undeniably grown too big, Casey noted. And many of the people Pulte touted as “firing” were simply returned to their home agencies and remained employed by the federal government, current and former officials said. For some critics, the far deeper concern with Pulte beyond his inexperience was whether he would weaponize the sensitive intelligence he now had access to against the president’s critics. As Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, he helped facilitate mortgage fraud investigations against the president’s top political opponents.

The president also tasked Pulte with declassifying information and had appointed the housing official with the hope that Pulte would work to declassify certain materials of interest to him, like those related to the 2020 election and his false claims of widespread election fraud.

But in reality, US officials familiar with Pulte’s tenure said, he only had the time — and ability — to execute the firings. The declassification project largely fell to the conservative commentator John Solomon, who had become a special government employee earlier this summer.

中国国家文物局出台《国有文物资源数据管理办法》，要求国有文物管理机构提供主动公开、授权使用等服务。

据中新社报道，在星期二（7月28日）的新闻发布会上，中国国家文物局科技教育司司长罗静指出，《办法》强调国有文物管理机构应面向社会提供主动公开、授权使用等服务，推动文物保护与数字化发展成果更多更公平惠及广大民众。

《办法》明晰了国有文物资源数据权益主体，明确了国有文物资源数据责任主体，构建了数据采集、加工、存储、传输、登记、服务全生命周期管理制度，对实现文物数据权益清晰、开放有序、利用有效、安全可控的科学管理目标，指导文物行业开展文物数字化实践具有重要意义。

罗静表示，实体文物受各种条件限制不可能全部长期展出，而数字资源可以把有限的线下展陈延伸为全天候公共文化服务。《办法》要求国有文物管理机构通过官方网站等平台，有计划、有步骤地主动公开文物高清影像以及数字展览等内容，满足社会公众浏览、欣赏、学习等使用需求。

在非营利性授权使用方面，文博从业人员、科研人员、教育从业者等文物考古研究与价值阐释主体，需要来源可靠、信息完整、体系化的文物数据，支撑开展学术研究、论文刊发、公益展览、公益宣传等非营利活动。《办法》要求国有文物管理机构按照非营利性原则明确使用范围并向社会公布，通过授权方式提供相应的文物数据。

在经营性活动授权使用方面，《办法》要求国有文物管理机构根据使用方申请，协商确定授权使用范围和服务费用，提供相应的数据。

Polls close in key Georgia gubernatorial primary

Fox News anchor Bill Hemmer reports on Georgia’s 2026 gubernatorial primary and Trump-backed candidate Ed Gallrein’s defeat of Thomas Massie in Kentucky on ‘Jesse Watters Primetime.’

The polls have closed in Georgia as two races in politically disparate parts of the country set the stage for one of the most unusual split-screen election days of the year on Tuesday.

Rep. David Scott’s death in April at age 80 created a vacancy in a heavily blue district encompassing the southern and eastern Atlanta suburbs of Stockbridge, Conyers and Snellville.

With the general election ballot already decided, Tuesday’s contest will determine who will finish out Scott’s term. Scott was notably related by marriage to Braves slugger Hank Aaron.

Across the country in South Dakota, Republicans vying for the Mount Rushmore State’s safely red governor’s seat have created the state’s first gubernatorial runoff between incumbent Gov. Larry Rhoden and self-made millionaire bitcoin investor Toby Doeden.

Rhoden originally took the reins in Pierre after President Donald Trump chose former Gov. Kristi Noem to be Homeland Security secretary in his second term. He was unable to garner enough support in the June primary to secure the nomination outright in his first statewide election as governor.

South Dakota’s runoff is expected to be a classic establishment-versus-outsider race, with Rhoden heavily favored in the polls but Doeden hoping for a Sioux Falls-fueled upset.

Minnehaha County, home to Sioux Falls, is a key county to watch Tuesday after helping propel Doeden to a first-place finish in the June primary.

Pennington County, on the state’s western side, will also be closely watched after contributing to Doeden’s top finish in June.

In contrast to what is expected in Scott’s district in November, Republicans are heavily favored because South Dakota has not elected a Democratic governor since the 1970s.

Then-Gov. Richard Kneip served nearly two terms before President Jimmy Carter nominated him as ambassador to Singapore. Gov. Harvey Wollman completed the final six months of Kneip’s term, and is the state’s last Democrat to hold the office.

Shifting back to the Deep South, Georgia Democrats are expected to hold Scott’s seat in the fall by a wide margin.

Efforts to replace Scott grew in recent months, particularly among the party’s progressive wing, as the 12-term, often-combative lawmaker drew increasing frustration from Democrats.

Last year, Scott made waves in Washington media when he shouted expletives at a Politico photographer as he was wheeled through the Capitol by staff.

“Who gave you the right to take my picture, a–hole,” Scott shouted at photographer Francis Chung in late 2025.

That demeanor was similar to what led Everton Blair to launch his primary bid against Scott, in what his campaign page calls a “voice for a new generation.”

Blair previously told Fox News Digital it was a run-in with Scott at a Gwinnett County town hall, where the lawmaker gave insufficient answers to questions and then reportedly became confrontational, that led him to explore a bid.

Blair had said he would “love to just hear a little bit more of the congressional and legislative strategy, congressman, that you have for this administration, particularly as it pertains to safeguarding federal funds,” according to Semafor, when Scott replied “hold on,” before becoming agitated:

“I don’t know who sent y’all, but we got these folks here who are providing answers. And I’m doing this. That’s what I’m doing,” Scott said, according to the outlet.

Blair responded by launching a primary bid, while remarking to Fox News Digital at the time that two other elderly Democratic members had recently died in office “at a time when every vote counts.”

The wave of millennial candidates seeking to replace aging Democrats was at the time dubbed the “Biden effect” — Democratic lawmakers retiring or facing potential primary challenges following the octogenarian Delawarean’s disastrous debate performance, which led to his decision to step aside for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

“Change can’t wait, and Democrats need a new bench of leaders who are committed to solving real problems for working people,” Blair said in a previous press release.

Meanwhile, Scott’s daughter is hoping to replace her late father in Congress, remarking that she wants to continue his legacy.

“That is my thing, is to finish out his year strongly, make sure that this money gets down to the district, and just make sure the 13th district is taken care of, constituency-wise, and making sure the projects go into finalization,” she told the Georgia Recorder, while adding she would retain her father’s staff locally and at the Capitol for added stability.

“[W]hen he first got into politics, I wasn’t even born, so I ran for some type of office or campaign every two years of my life, so this is just my norm, I’m just picking up where we left off with him,” she told the outlet.

A third candidate, former Mississippi judge Carlos Moore, also criticized Rep. Scott’s tenure, telling the Mississippi Free Press he wants to be a “leader who actually shows up.”

Moore had been suspended from the bench for one year in 2024 after a bar tribunal found he mishandled a wrongful death settlement, according to the outlet.

When asked by the press about the infraction, he pointed to Trump’s 34-count indictment in New York. He also pledged, if elected, to be a leader who understands “how to defend our democracy and Constitution” from the president.

The winner of Tuesday’s special elections will serve only until January.

Georgia state Rep. Jasmine Clark, D-Tucker, won the Democratic nomination for the full term earlier this year and is heavily favored against Republican Air Force veteran Jonathan Chavez in November. Trump lost the district by about 43 points in 2024.
