Glen Hansard, Oscar-winning singer-songwriter, killed in Dublin motorcycle crash

    Updated on: July 29, 2026 / 10:24 AM EDT / CBS/AP

Academy Award-winning Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard died in a motorcycle crash in Dublin early Wednesday, his management said. He was 56.

“With broken hearts, we announce the passing of Glen Hansard in the early hours of this morning,” ATC Management said in a statement to CBS News.

Irish police said a man in his 50s died in a single vehicle motorcycle crash in Lucan on the outskirts of the Irish capital before 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The man, who they did not name, was treated at the scene but was pronounced dead a short time later. CBS News partner BBC News reported that police are asking witnesses from the crash to come forward.

Hansard was born in Dublin in 1970, according to the BBC, and busked in the city. He made his acting debut in the 1991 film “The Commitments,” playing Outspan Foster, a young working-class member of a Dublin soul band.

Hansard again combined music and acting in the 2007 indie musical film “Once,” co-writing the movie’s songs with Markéta Irglová. The pair also starred in the film. Hansard and Irglová won the 2008 Oscar for best original song for the number “Falling Slowly.” A stage adaptation of the musical ran on Broadway from 2012 to 2015, winning eight Tony Awards, and has played around the world.

Off-screen, Hansard was long-serving frontman for rock band The Frames and performed with Irglová as the rock duo The Swell Season. Hansard has also released five solo albums, including “Didn’t He Ramble,” which was nominated for a Grammy for best folk album in 2016.

Hansard has made frequent appearances on CBS Saturday Mornings’ “Saturday Sessions” segment. In 2015, he showcased “Didn’t He Ramble,” and in 2018 and 2024 he played songs from other solo albums. In August 2025, he and Irglová performed songs from “Forward,” their first album as The Swell Season in 16 years.

At the funeral of The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan in 2023, Hansard performed The Pogues’ song “Fairytale Of New York” with Irish singer Lisa O’Neill, which prompted dancing in the aisles of the church.

For years, Hansard led the Christmas Eve charity busk outside Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre, where members of the public gathered to see famous Irish musicians perform in aid of the Dublin Simon Community. The organization said Wednesday it was “devastated” to hear of Hansard’s death, according to the BBC.

“While known to many as a genius songwriter and storyteller, for us, he was threefold that, in his generosity, a true advocate for our work and a giant in the fight against homelessness,” the Dublin Simon Community said in a statement.

Hansard is survived by his wife and a 3-year-old son. In a 2023 interview with the BBC, Hansard said becoming a father had “completely, in the greatest way possible, upturned everything that I know.”

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin said he was “deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Glen Hansard.”

“A talented musician and actor who made a significant contribution to Ireland’s cultural landscape over many years,” Martin posted on X, sending his “sincere sympathies to his family, friends and fans.”

    image

4 women accuse U.S. actor Jared Leto of committing sexual offenses when they were teens; he denies it

    2026-07-29T09:23:00-0400 / CBS News

London— Four women speaking to CBS News’ partner network the BBC have accused actor and band frontman Jared Leto of criminal sexual conduct when they were teenagers.

One woman said the Oscar-winning actor and “Thirty Seconds to Mars” band frontman sexually assaulted her in a motel when she was 17, while another told the BBC said she had sex with Leto in California when she was the same age — which would qualify as statutory rape.

A third woman told the BBC that Leto threatened her with sexual assault when she was 19 while she was alone with him in a hotel room. Another alleges the star groomed her as a teenager, on one occasion suggesting they should have sex.

Others say they received sexual phone calls or lewd comments from Leto.

In total, 10 women spoke to the BBC for the documentary, Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret, including nine who said they were sharing their stories for the first time.

The women all say they encountered Leto when he was in his 30s and 40s, between 2002 and 2016. He is now 54.

“This was 25 years ago … he has gotten away with it,” one of his accusers said.

CBS News has not independently corroborated the accusations.

Leto’s representatives shared a statement from him saying: “I have never sexually assaulted anyone in my entire life. These claims are absolutely and categorically false.”

Leto has been plagued by allegations of sexual misconduct for years, but has denied all wrongdoing. No criminal charges have ever been filed against him.

Two men who worked with Thirty Seconds to Mars, Leto’s band, told the BBC that staff were uncomfortable about his interactions with teenage girls, saying he occasionally invited them to his dressing room or to the house where the band was recording.

The BBC said it corroborated several of the women’s accounts with family and friends who were aware of the interactions with Leto at the time. The network also said it viewed pictures and messages supporting the women’s claims.

“I think everyone thought the age gap was way too big,” one former band employee told the BBC.

    New allegations

The four women accusing Leto of criminal behavior, whom the BBC identified only as Isabel, Alex, Clara and Etta, go into detail in the documentary about what they say took place.

Isabel, now in her 40s, said she was 17 when she agreed to meet Leto at a hotel, where he started kissing her and used her hand to masturbate himself. She said she pulled away and told him she wanted to leave, adding that Leto then put on a towel and let her out of the “dingy gross motel” room after appearing to check who was around.

Clara told the BBC she had sex with Leto when she was 17 and he was 34, at his California home, while her friend waited in another room.

In California, if an adult has sex with someone below the age of 18 it can be classified as statutory rape.

“He told me, ‘I would like you to call me daddy’. And it was either pretend to be a little girl or ‘my little girl’,” she said in the documentary.

She said she was “naive and vulnerable” and unsure if the behavior was normal in an adult relationship.

“There is no well-adjusted man in his 30s who’s going to look at a teenager and think … she would be a great partner,” Clara told the BBC.

Etta told the BBC she was sent a non-disclosure agreement by Leto two years after he sent her explicit sexual emails, even though he knew she was 16. “He did at least once mention him and I having sex at some point,” she said.

She never signed the NDA, which was seen by the BBC.

    Previous allegations

In June 2025, nine women accused Leto of sexual impropriety in a news story published by U.S. outlet Air Mail.

The story also detailed how, a month earlier, Los Angeles DJ Allie Teilz had reposted a 2012 Facebook status in which she wrote: “Youre [sic] not really in L.A. until Jared Leto tries to force himself on you backstage… In a kilt.. And a snow hat.”

Air Mail reported that Teilz wrote in an Instagram story: “I was assaulted and traumatized by this creep when I was 17 … He knew my age and didn’t care. What he did was predatory, terrifying and unacceptable.”

A representative for Leto “expressly denied” the accusations in the Air Mail piece, calling Teilz’s allegations “demonstrably false.”

The BBC said it counted more than 120 separate allegations made about Leto’s behavior toward women, many of them online, some of which were historical.

Leto won the 2014 Academy Award as best supporting actor for his role in “Dallas Buyers Club.”

Leto is set to tour Europe and the U.K. next year with Thirty Seconds to Mars.

Todd Blanche’s nomination to be President Donald Trump’s attorney general is hanging in the balance with a key GOP senator saying the Justice Department has not done enough to assure him a controversial $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund won’t move forward.

The pushback from Texas Sen. John Cornyn comes as the Senate Judiciary Committee has been planning to advance Blanche’s nomination on Thursday – but without Cornyn’s support, the vote will fail.

Cornyn said Wednesday that a planned meeting with Blanche to discuss his demands for DOJ to formally kill the fund had been canceled. The Texas Republican told CNN he still has not received the written commitment he has been demanding from Blanche and the Justice Department to formally kill the fund. As a result, he told reporters, he is not prepared to vote yes.

Asked by CNN if he would block the nomination if the hearing proceeds, Cornyn answered, “I’m not prepared to vote yes. Let me put it that way.”

With Cornyn and fellow Judiciary committee Republican Sen. Thom Tillis still unhappy that the DOJ hasn’t provided a written assurance to kill the fund, it’s unclear whether the committee will proceed with Thursday’s vote. Cornyn said the panel’s chair, Chuck Grassley, will determine around 4 p.m. on Wednesday whether to proceed with Thursday’s session.

“So, we still got a little time, and hopefully, they now recognize the seriousness of this, and will be responsive,” Cornyn said, referring to Blanche’s team.

A DOJ official told CNN the department, “provided a written proposal to Senator Cornyn’s staff yesterday following ongoing discussion with both the Committee and the Senator’s office. We look forward to further discussion around any outstanding concerns.”

However, Cornyn told reporters Wednesday that he hasn’t “seen a single piece of writing that is responsive to what I’ve requested.”

Blanche has insisted that the “anti-weaponization” fund — a controversial pool of money set aside to award people who claim to have been wronged by the Justice Department, including possibly January 6, 2021, rioters — is no longer happening. The administration had also previously asserted in a court filing that it had abandoned the “anti-weaponization” fund.

When asked if the committee will still vote on Thursday, Grassley said, “You’ll have to ask Tillis and Cornyn about that.”

Some in the Justice Department were surprised by Cornyn’s social media post Tuesday, which made clear he was still not prepared to vote in favor of Blanche. He posted to X that “there is no ‘deal’ on Blanche nom. They know what they have to do.”

The acting attorney general’s office had been confident that Blanche’s nomination would pass the committee vote. Sources within the Justice Department said there was still some confusion about what exactly would satisfy Cornyn’s push against the “anti-weaponization” fund.

CNN’s Morgan Rimmer and Sarah Ferris contributed to this report.

plan to sell early access to President Donald Trump’s social media posts breaks the law, according to a letter reviewed by Reuters.

Trump Media, or TMTG, unveiled a paid, licensed data feed this month that will give trading firms “the fastest” access to posts from the 10 most influential Truth Social accounts, including Trump’s. The letter, sent on Tuesday, ramps up pressure on the product, as well as any Wall Street firms that may have bought the feed, potentially increasing what some industry sources said they believed to be legal, political and regulatory risks.

“This appears to be an outrageous abuse of the President’s office for his personal benefit that undermines everyday investors and the integrity of our markets, while enriching Wall Street and other wealthy insiders,” Warren and Schiff said in the July 28 letter to Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Paul Atkins.

A spokesperson for the SEC and Atkins, a free-market Republican appointed to the role by Trump who has generally taken a softer stance on enforcement, confirmed receiving the letter but declined to comment further.

“Senate Democrats continue to mischaracterize Truth API either out of ideological opposition to free markets or a failure to grasp the distinction between public and nonpublic information — or, quite possibly, both,” said a spokesperson for TMTG in an emailed statement.

The White House referred requests for comment to the company.

EARLY DATA ACCESS, FOR A PRICE

Trump Media has discussed charging as much as $100,000 a month for the Truth API ‌product, Reuters and other media outlets have reported. Trump’s social media posts have in the past moved markets, and the profits of many top trading firms, hedge funds and financial services firms depend heavily on the speed at which they can trade off such news.

Trump, who owns about 41% of Trump Media through a trust his children oversee, stands to profit from the paid access model. The company said it has already signed up customers ahead of the August 1 launch, but did not identify them.

Truth API is the latest example of the president mixing his personal business with presidential affairs, raising ethical issues, Warren of Massachusetts and Schiff from California said. Trump reported last month, for example, that he received more than $1.4 billion last year from his family’s crypto projects.

While tech platforms are generally allowed to offer clients early data access, even if it disadvantages some market participants, according to lawyers, some ethics experts have said the Truth API product is different because Trump’s posts are government information and he has an obligation to disseminate it publicly.

Warren and Schiff also noted Trump has in the past used Truth Social to endorse specific stocks including Citigroup

    , Intel

    INTC.O, opens new tab
    and Palantir

    PLTR.O, opens new tab
, which they said raises the risk of insider trading and of undermining investor confidence that the market is operating on a level playing field.

In the statement, the TMTG spokesperson said: “The Senators must have invented a new theory of ‘insider trading’ based on publicly available information.”

Sen. Paul vows contempt vote after Fauci repeatedly invokes Fifth Amendment in Covid hearing

    2026-07-29T12:56:04.824Z / CNN

Republican Sen. Rand Paul declared that there will be a vote next week on holding Dr. Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress after the scientist who led the US government response to the Covid-19 pandemic invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination more than 100 times during a contentious congressional hearing.

Appearing before the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee under a subpoena from Paul, Fauci declared in his opening statement he would not be answering questions, citing what he characterized as the chairman’s “obvious obsession with calling for my prosecution.”

But in an unusual move, Republican Senators proceeded with the hearing anyway, peppering him with inquiries about National Institutes of Health-funded research and the origins of Covid-19. It forced Fauci to repeat, over and over, that he was invoking his constitutional right.

When the hearing was near its end, Paul said he would have a contempt vote next week – which could initiate a process that would result in the Justice Department considering whether to charge Fauci with a crime.

Throughout the hearing that ran well over two hours, Fauci mostly stared straight ahead. But at times, frustration appeared to flash across his face.

And in a particularly dramatic moment, Paul had Fauci’s attorney escorted out as the lawyer repeatedly tried to interject and invoke Fauci’s Fifth Amendment rights.

In a written statement submitted before the hearing, the lawyer said that the circumstances surrounding Fauci’s appearance “regrettably made his continued cooperation (with Congress) impossible,” adding that Paul had a “public crusade” against his client.

Republican critics might not have gotten meaningful exchanges to relitigate the scientist’s alleged mishandling of the Covid-19 response and conspiracies about the origins of the virus. But they did get hours of images of Fauci refusing to answer after GOP lawmakers delivered lengthy monologues questioning his conduct – a political boon in their long-running bid to undercut him.

“Let the record record that the witness has refused to answer whether there’s a folder in front of him based on his Fifth Amendment right,” Paul said at one point.

Fauci, though, noted in his opening statement that GOP lawmakers had made clear they wanted to use the hearing to get him prosecuted, saying “the sole reason (Sen. Paul) is calling me before this committee is to get me to say something, anything, that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up, in his words, ‘behind bars.’”

Democrats on the committee, meanwhile, used their time to voice frustration that Paul subpoenaed Fauci rather than focusing on budget cuts to health care agencies.

“It is unfortunate that you have been put in the position that you are in today, and it must be enormously frustrating to know that this hearing is designed to entrap you,” Sen. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire said to Fauci.

Fauci, the face of American infectious disease research dating back to the HIV/AIDs crisis, has appeared more than 250 times before Congress, and this is the first time that he’s invoked the Fifth Amendment.

The 85-year-old former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has previously appeared before lawmakers to deny, under oath, allegations brought by Paul of obscuring the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic and controversial infectious disease research.

Pressure from Paul and others led President Joe Biden to preemptively pardon Fauci during his last days in office, shielding Fauci from charges pertaining to any comments made in previous years.

But he faced a new threat after Paul became chairman of a major Senate committee: that Republican senators and others, including US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., would endeavor to find new ways to pursue perjury charges against him.

“A pardon that protects a person from criminal prosecution doesn’t rewrite history. It does not erase documents. It does not convert a misleading statement to a truthful one, and it does not prevent Congress from establishing what happened,” Paul said in his opening remarks, referencing his allegations that Fauci had misrepresented the pandemic’s origins and deleted internal correspondence.

Paul and Kennedy made clear ahead of the hearing that they hoped Fauci, who retired in 2022, would perjure himself in comments about the origins of Covid-19, shutdown measures and scientific research funded by NIAID.

“There are many things that (Fauci) said that we know are lies, and Rand Paul presumably is going to ask him about those things, and if he lies again, then he could be subject to perjury prosecution,” Kennedy told Fox News on Monday night.

President Donald Trump also weighed in ahead of the hearing on Wednesday, saying in a social media post that Fauci “made too many bad calls.” The president added that he “didn’t let (Fauci) shut the Country down” during the pandemic.

Fauci’s refusal to answer questions comes days after another House Republican referred former special counsel Jack Smith to the Justice Department for possible prosecution, suggesting he’d made false statements in his own committee testimony, which took place behind closed doors. Like Fauci, Smith has also come under intense scrutiny by Trump allies, who were angered by his investigation into the president’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Paul contends that the NIH funded viral research in Wuhan, China, that made more virulent and contagious strains of coronavirus. Known as gain-of-function research, these types of studies are often used to better understand how viruses spread and how to treat them.

Fauci has denied through the years that the NIH ever funded studies related to the coronavirus that created the 2020 pandemic. Federal reviews of the outbreak have been inconclusive about its source, but there is no evidence the virus was engineered and leaked from a virology lab.

Yet Fauci and Paul have regularly sparred in congressional hearings about whether NIH funded gain-of-function research in China. Fauci maintains that by the government definition of the gain-of-function research, the agency did not fund such studies overseas.

It has remained a critical point for Paul, and a fiery debate between the two in multiple congressional hearings.

“The NIH and NIAID categorically has not funded gain-of-function research to be conducted in the Wuhan Institute,” Fauci told Paul in a tense hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee in May 2021.

Asked again that July by Paul about gain-of-function research, Fauci said: “If anybody is lying here, senator, it is you.”

Ahead of Wednesday’s hearing, Paul released 1,100 pages of Fauci’s diary as NIAID director, spanning from late 2019, when Covid-19 began spreading in China, to his retirement in in December 2022. The diary entries show his growing concern about the pandemic, internal conflicts with administration officials and his documentation of his rising fame.

Kennedy revealed in a Fox interview Monday night that he had handed those files to Paul after an eight-month search.

Fauci referenced the release of his diary as further evidence of Paul’s crusade against him, calling it a move “aimed at embarrassing and intimidating me.”

He concluded his opening remarks saying:“Although it pains me to do so because of the respect that I have for the legislative branch of government and my decades long record of cooperating with Congress, under the advice of my attorneys, I will invoke my right under the 5th Amendment of the Constitution to refrain from answering your questions.”

The committee’s highest ranking Democrat, Sen. Gary Peters from Michigan, lamented that Paul was focusing on Fauci at the cost of the committee’s other priorities.

“Instead of focusing on the national security challenges that we are facing in our country right now, today’s hearing looks backwards, revisiting questions this committee has already examined,” Peters said in his remarks prior to Fauci invoking the 5th amendment. “Rather than building on that work to strengthen our preparedness against future disasters, we are instead relitigating the past.”
