2025 was the deadliest year for antisemitic attacks outside Israel in 3 decades, study says

    2026-07-29T09:52:00-0400 / CBS News

    By

Last year was the deadliest for antisemitic attacks outside of Israel in more than 30 years, according to a new report, with 20 people being killed in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The J7 Large Communities’ Task Force Against Antisemitism said its study “once again sounds the alarm about the deadly reality of antisemitism that Jewish communities worldwide confront at levels unprecedented since World War II.”

The J7 task force is made up of groups fighting against and raising awareness of antisemitism in the countries with the largest Jewish communities outside Israel: Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the U.K. and the U.S. Together, these countries are home to more than 90% of the Jewish diaspora, according to the organization.

The group documented over 23,000 antisemitic incidents in the seven countries.

In Australia, 15 people were killed on Sydney’s Bondi Beach when two gunmen opened fire on a Hanukkah celebration.

In the U.K., two men were killed in an attack on a synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur, Judaism’s holiest day.

In the U.S., two staff from the Israeli embassy were shot dead at a Jewish museum in Washington D.C., and a grandmother in Boulder, Colorado, was killed from wounds sustained in a molotov cocktail attack on a gathering of people showing support for hostages in Gaza.

The 20 deaths made 2025 the deadliest year for antisemitic attacks since 1994, when a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires was bombed, killing 85 people and wounding 300. In 2024, an Argentine court blamed the attack on Hezbollah and Iran.

The report found that antisemitic incidents across the seven countries were up 136% since 2022, the year before the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel that sparked the war in Gaza, with violent incidents up 97% in the same time period.

Antisemitic incidents increased in the U.K., Argentina and Germany in 2025. They fell in the U.S., Australia, Canada and France compared with 2024, but all the countries remained far higher than levels recorded before Oct. 7.

In the U.K., there have been a string of antisemitic attacks in recent months, including arson targeting synagogues and other Jewish sites. In late April, two men were wounded in a stabbing attack in Golders Green that British authorities declared a terrorist incident.

A group with purported links to Iran, Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, or The Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Righteous, claimed responsibility for several of the attacks and told CBS News in March that it would keep threatening U.S. and Israeli interests worldwide until we’ve avenged every child in Gaza, Iran, Lebanon, and the resistance nations.”

“Antisemitism in our seven countries is no longer a surge; it is our new normal. Governments must stop reacting after Jews are attacked and start acting before, with real security funding, stronger laws and social media platforms that enforce their own rules,” the J7 group said in a joint statement.

A House Democratic lawmaker compared actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to domestic terrorism after a visit to a Texas detention facility on Tuesday.

Rep. Luz Rivas, D-Calif., said that seeing ICE’s actions was personal for her as the daughter of Mexican immigrants and argued that “for the people of the United States, we don’t want to see our government, or ICE officials, acting like domestic terrorists,” she said in Spanish during a press conference.

She said her Los Angeles district saw more ICE raids than anywhere else in her county.

Rivas was among a group of lawmakers led by Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, on a visit to an ICE facility in Dilley, Texas, which over 100 House Democrats have demanded to be shut down.

The lawmakers accused the Trump administration of holding families, including a child as young as 2 months old, in inhumane conditions.

Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., a member of the left-wing “Squad,” also attacked President Donald Trump as a “dictator.”

SOMETHING TO HIDE? ICE UNDER FIRE FOR SUBSTANDARD CONDITIONS AT FOR-PROFIT DETENTION CENTER

“It’s so important that we not acquiesce to this, this fascist administration, this dictator in the Oval Office,” Pressley said. “History has shown us time again, appeasement does not work. The only way to beat a dictator is with defiance. The only way to beat fascism is to refuse to accept this segregated, divided, dark, dystopian view that they have for our country, is to reject it as an inevitability.”

She called on Americans to “resist, reject, condemn at every turn.”

But it’s that kind of rhetoric that Republicans have argued is responsible for sending tensions across the U.S. skyrocketing.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in response to Rivas’ comments, “Attacks and demonization of ICE law enforcement are wrong. Because of smears like this our ICE officers are now facing a 1,300% increase in assaults against them as they put their lives on the line to arrest murderers, rapists, pedophiles, gang members, and terrorists. ICE law enforcement is arresting criminals and saving countless American lives.”

“Rep. Luz Rivas should be thanking our law enforcement for removing these dangerous criminals from her state—NOT vilifying law enforcement,” the spokesperson said.

SPANBERGER’S ICE ROLLBACK TO BLAME FOR TODDLER KILLING, VIRGINIA ‘HOTBED’ OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT CRIME: DHS

GOP allies of the president have accused Democrats of encouraging violence and resistance against ICE agents, drawing a line between encouragement to resist federal immigration officers and the slate of violent incidents involving those officers this year alone.

But Democrats are accusing ICE of acting as a rogue agency outside the bounds of the law.

“We have to abolish ICE. And then I’m going to take it one step further and say any of those agents that have contributed to and caused the injury, the harm, and even fatalities, they must also be held accountable,” Pressley said. “And we should abolish qualified immunity for these federal law enforcement officers.”

In a letter sent earlier this month, 111 House Democrats accused the administration of harming children and families with the conditions at the Dilley detention center.

“Parents describe horrendous conditions at Dilley, leading to severe depression, hopelessness, and suicidal ideation amongst their children. Children have reported that their food is often contaminated with worms and mold and that they feel sick after drinking tap water,” the letter said. “Families also report not being able to sleep at night because the lights are kept on in their rooms throughout the night. … Medical care provided by CoreCivic staff is delayed, denied, and in many cases outright dismissed, even when children are suffering life-threatening medical emergencies.”

DHS did previously accuse Democrats of lying about conditions at Dilley, which it said in a press release was specialized to hold families and care for children specifically.

“The Dilley facility is retrofitted for families. Children have access to teachers, classrooms, and curriculum booklets for math, reading, and spelling. They have access to age-appropriate books, toys, and outdoor activities. All of this is generously funded by the U.S. taxpayer,” DHS said.

“Infant care packages include formula, baby food, bottles, diapers, wipes, and hygiene items. The facility also provides sippy cups and cribs. Adults with children are housed in facilities that provide for their safety, security, and medical needs.”

A De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400 drops fire retardant over a forest near Saint-Jean-d'Illac, during wildfires in southwestern France, Tuesday, July 28, 2026. AP Photo/Emma Da Silva

2 firefighters die in Greece as crews in France fight massive blaze 4 times the size of Paris

    2026-07-29T11:54:00-0400 / CBS/AP

Two firefighters died Wednesday while battling a blaze on the Greek island of Crete, officials said, while crews in southern France worked to extinguish a massive, uncontained wildfire that had spread to roughly four times the size of Paris. Across Europe, firefighters confronted a dangerous combination of high temperatures, drought and powerful winds, compromising containment efforts.

The deaths on Crete brought a fatal new dimension to a wildfire emergency stretching from the Atlantic coast to the eastern Mediterranean. At the peak of the evacuations, a third of a million people were driven from homes and vacation sites in France and Spain.

In France’s Gironde region, authorities said the blaze had not spread during a calm night. But temperatures forecast to reach 40 degrees Celsius, or 104 degrees Fahrenheit, and strengthening afternoon winds threatened to turn that respite into only a brief reprieve.

The landscape was so combustible that investigators believe routine brush-clearing work near a high-voltage line may have sparked the inferno, even though the work appeared to comply with regulations.

At the command center in Lège, firefighters bent over maps spread across a car hood, tracking three danger zones: northern Cap-Ferret; the wooded corridor around Marcheprime, Cestas and Saint-Jean-d’Illac; and a military site near Martignas, where a major outbreak forced a large deployment.

More than 2,200 firefighters and over 20 aircraft remained mobilized, backed by crews from across France and European partners.

“We strike quickly and strike hard at any new smoke emissions,” Gironde fire commander Matthieu Jomain said.

Beyond the command center, civilians were trying to hold the line themselves. At Souge, volunteers flooded the edges of dirt tracks while a local digger driver plowed through still-burning soil, trying to keep flames from crossing back when the expected west wind arrived. In Lacanau, residents pumped water from a lake into tanks headed for hot spots and firefighters’ cisterns.

“If one day the fire starts in our neck of the woods, I know very well that all the people here would do the same for us,” said Flavien Dubuch, 33, who drove from Saint-Émilion with his father to help.

Fire crews in France and Spain have battled raging wildfires this summer, which collectively forced more than 300,000 people to evacuate between both countries. In Gironde, more than 250,000 were ordered to evacuate over the weekend, as dry conditions and strong winds began to complicate firefighting efforts. Authorities said the evacuation order was among the largest since World War II.

    Hottest day this week

The advance of major fires in the Landes and Var regions has been halted. That left Gironde as France’s biggest remaining wildfire battle, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said.

Although tens of thousands have been allowed to return home since the evacuation, authorities warned Wednesday that danger could still lie ahead.

Much of the area burned in Gironde is made up of pine forests and scrubland, which grew uncontrollably this year under successive heat waves. The extreme heat that western Europe has experienced in recent months removes moisture from vegetation and lowers humidity, which, in turn, causes grass, brush and forest debris like fallen branches and leaves to burn faster as fuel.

Investigators believe contractors working near a high-voltage line for power-grid operator Enedis ignited the blaze while using a brush-cutting machine, Bordeaux prosecutor Renaud Gaudeul said.

Météo-France said Wednesday would be the hottest and driest day of the week, with elevated wildfire danger across every region of France. Drought now covers mainland France and Corsica, with soils nearing the record dryness reached in August 2022.

Smoke from the Gironde and Landes fires also pushed particulate pollution higher across both departments, regional air-quality monitors said.

Gironde authorities ordered 4,000 more people out of tourist sites along the Atlantic coast on Tuesday, widening what may be France’s largest peacetime evacuation.

“The situation remains complicated. That’s clear. We’re not out of the woods,” said Gironde prefect Sophie Brocas, who also authorized 60,000 evacuees to return to three Bordeaux suburbs untouched by fire.

The opposing movements — thousands ordered out of coastal resorts as others returned with mobile phones on and emergency bags packed — captured how precarious the situation remains.

The disruption was spreading beyond the burn zone into Bordeaux’s peak tourism season.

Edouard le Grix de la Salle, who runs Château du Grand Verdus with his brother, said official appeals to avoid the region threatened its wine-tourism trade. “How did they not think about protecting that sector?” he told The Associated Press.

At one point the Gironde blaze created a black thundercloud, electrified and lit from within, that generated lightning, violent winds and new fires beyond the original front. The pyrocumulonimbus was the first recorded in France.

Two firefighters died Wednesday while battling a wildfire in the Rethymno region of Crete, Greece’s fire department said. They were among about 125 firefighters confronting flames fanned by strong winds, with four helicopters and four water-dropping planes deployed.

The circumstances of their deaths were not immediately clear. The department said they died “in the line of duty to protect the lives and property of citizens and the natural environment.”

Tens of thousands begin returning home in Spain

At the height of the crisis, roughly 330,000 people were driven from homes and vacation sites across France and Spain.

Tens of thousands of people began returning home in central Spain after firefighters made progress around Madrid and Ávila. Evacuation orders were lifted for about 20,000 people in the Madrid region, while stay-at-home restrictions ended for another 14,000.

But 10,000 people remain under evacuation orders in Castellón, where a fire was still out of control as Spain braced for its fourth heat wave of the summer.

More than 1,160 square kilometers (448 square miles) have burned across France this year, according to the Interior Ministry.

Europe is the world’s fastest-warming continent, warming at more than twice the global average, according to the European Union’s Copernicus climate service. Western Europe recorded its hottest June on record, with extreme heat and widespread dryness contributing to the spread and intensification of fires in France and Spain, Copernicus said.

    2026-07-29T14:05:33.518Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/29/politics/trump-eisenhower-executive-office-building-paint-test

The Trump admin wants to test paint patches on an iconic DC building this week. Preservationists are trying to stop it.

    2026-07-29T14:05:33.518Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/29/politics/trump-eisenhower-executive-office-building-paint-test

Preservationists are seeking to stop patches of an iconic Washington building from being painted as soon as on Thursday, warning that the move – billed as a test for President Donald Trump’s larger plan to turn the whole structure white – will cause irreparable damage to the landmark.

In a request for an emergency injunction due to be filed on Thursday, Cultural Heritage Partners, a law firm, will argue that the proposed testing – which includes painting four 2-by-2 foot panels on the façade of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building – without the expert oversight ordinarily required risks harm to the building.

It could also set a dangerous precedent for circumventing government review processes, handing free rein to the president for other projects, they argue.

“I would rate this as pretty urgent,” said Greg Werkheiser, founding partner at the firm. “The testing concerns us because no one outside the White House knows who is conducting the testing or what protocols they’re following, and qualified preservation experts have had no chance to weigh in.”

“The broader concern for historic sites nationwide is that this is all taking place under the auspices of the Executive Office of the President, outside the review process that Congress established for projects like this,” he added.

Trump has expressed his desire to makeover the EEOB – a sprawling Gilded Age structure next to the White House that houses offices for some 1,500 federal employees – by covering its gray granite façade with a white “magic paint with silicate”. The plan had been in a holding pattern for months amid the legal challenge brought by Werkheiser, his firm and other preservationist plaintiffs.

Last week, the administration disclosed in a court filing that it intends to paint panels in inconspicuous spots on the building to test “the potential effects of applying and removing a mineral silicate coating.”

The intention to move forward with the paint test is a step seen by critics as an escalation in Trump’s quest to remake Washington and put his stamp on the White House complex.

“The President’s personal aesthetic preferences do not outweigh congressionally mandated procedures,” the injunction request, shared exclusively with CNN, says.

“President Trump follows a familiar pattern,” the plaintiffs warn. “He conceives of a project that he announces will improve a nationally beloved and historically significant resource. He directs those around him to execute his vision as quickly as possible. He disregards the strict federal standards Congress established to protect national, environmental, cultural, and historic resources. He misleads the public about both the harm his project will cause and the laws he is circumventing. And he rushes forward, irreparably damaging resources that do not belong to him.”

It’s unclear how quickly US District Judge Dabney Friedrich, a Trump appointee who is overseeing the case, will respond to the request once it’s filed.

Trump has repeatedly disparaged the EEOB, which was completed in 1888 in the French Second Empire style, as “ugly,” calling its exterior gray a “really bad color” and asserting that switching to a white façade would give it more of a cohesive look with the White House building.

To achieve that, the administration has proposed either painting the EEOB fully white or painting just the top part of the building while leaving the bottom as the existing gray granite.

It has said it intends to use a mineral silicate paint – which Trump has privately called a “magic paint” – which, it claims, will strengthen the stone and keep water out. That claim is disputed by experts.

Preservationists argue that EEOB’s monumental gray facade is a defining visual element of the building and any change to the color would bring harm to the building’s history, and that the paint could trap moisture that could damage the granite.

Last year, they brought suit to the district court in DC to stop plans to paint it.

And in March, the plaintiffs assembled 25 unnamed experts with experience in historical building restoration and silicate paint, who concluded that “mineral silicate paints are not suited for use on granite,” explaining that the stone does not chemically bond with this type of paint. Priming the granite, they added, would incur “permanent damage,” and the paint would “not strengthen granite or improve its structural durability.”

However, in the latest filing from the government dated July 20, the administration said it would move forward with paint testing.

This and potential renovations, instead of being managed by the General Services Administration (GSA) – an agency with congressionally-mandated authority over the building – a part of the Executive Office of the President called the Office of the Administration would take the lead.

Shifting the responsibility from GSA to the Office of the President could allow the administration to elide the approvals and review process the GSA must adhere to under federal laws and statutes that seek to protect historic property, Werkheiser argues.

The administration, in its latest court filing, says that the testing does not constitute a decision to proceed with the painting project and they remain engaged with other analyses required by environmental and historical preservation laws, as well as with two federal agencies, the Commission of Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission, that have authority over design and planning of public properties in Washington. Both commissions have been stacked with Trump loyalists and would have to sign off on the plans. They have asked for more details about the paint plans.

In addition to painting study, the administration says it will also conduct a facade condition assessment which will include a visual and hands-on survey and then the extraction of up to ten samples of two inches in depth in diameter from the EEOB’s facade that are experiencing deterioration.

The samples will be lab-tested to evaluate the condition of the stone – including microfractures, grain separation, stone mineral composition, stone condition and the presence of preexisting coatings, contaminants and weathering effects.
