Gaza holds mass funeral for 112 people in extended family recovered from wartime rubble

In Gaza City, row after row of human remains — 112 people in all, and hauntingly from the same extended family — were laid in the morning sun, each draped in a Palestinian flag.

This large family group, including dozens of women and children from the Hassayna and Abu Sharia clan in Gaza City, died nearly three years ago.

An Israeli military strike hit the clan’s residential compound in the second month of the war, on Nov. 23, 2023, according to Gaza’s Civil Defense, which operates under the Hamas-run Interior Ministry.

Israel’s military has not responded to a request for comment about the strike, but said throughout the conflict that it targeted militants, accusing Hamas of operating in areas that put civilians at risk.

Recovery teams were only able to access the site in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City in mid-July, exhuming and collecting decomposed remains over the last two weeks of the month.

Gaza authorities described this as the strip’s biggest mass funeral since Oct. 7, 2023, after Hamas-led militants stormed southern Israel, igniting fierce Israeli retribution that has killed more than 70,000 Palestinians in the nearly three years since, according to figures from Gaza’s Hamas-run Health Ministry.

One mourner showered flower petals over the covered bodies of the Hassayna and Abu Sharia clan as women and children watched from atop partly demolished buildings around the earthen square. A banner with the faces of dozens of children served as the backdrop of a speech from the spokesperson of Gaza’s Civil Defense.

“O nation, why are children getting killed in Gaza? Why are women getting killed in Gaza?” asked Mahmoud Basal at the service. “Why are massacres committed against innocents in Gaza?”

The words “Stop the genocide in Gaza,” in both Arabic and English, had been scrawled on the podium he spoke from.

Israeli officials have vehemently disputed accusations that Israel committed genocide in Gaza, saying it was Hamas that attempted genocide with its Oct. 7 attack on the Jewish state.

Photos show lava spewing from Guatemala’s Fuego volcano as evacuations are ordered

    August 4, 2026 / 11:26 AM EDT / CBS/AFP

Guatemala’s Fuego volcano erupted again Monday, prompting authorities to order evacuations in nearby communities.

The eruption started Monday morning and had intensified by nightfall. Photos show lava and huge plumes of ash spewing nearly 4 miles into the air.

Live images Tuesday morning showed big clouds of gas and ash over the volcano.

Guatemala’s disaster coordination agency, CONRED, on Monday issued a nationwide orange alert. The alert level is one below the highest level of red, which indicates the most serious emergency.

Officials on Monday began evacuating two villages near the volcano, which is located 22 miles from the capital, Guatemala City.

Footage released by the emergency services showed the powerful eruption turning clouds red and lava flowing down the slopes of the 12,346-foot volcano.

“These flows are mixtures of volcanic gases, ash, rocks, and high temperatures that move rapidly down the volcano’s slopes,” CONRED said in a news alert Tuesday.

Officials also warned of ash falling on nearby communities.

The country’s Institute of Volcanology warned in a statement that the volcano was “moving towards a more explosive phase.”

It warned of hot volcanic debris flows down Fuego’s slopes, with communities on the western and southern flanks at the greatest risk.

Guatemala lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity. Fuego is one of Central America’s most active volcanoes, causing several mass evacuations in recent years.

Authorities evacuated more than 500 people last year after Fuego spewed gas and ash, with residents moved to shelters from communities near the crater.

Another eruption from Fuego in 2023 caused the evacuation of around 1,200 people.

In 2018, 215 people were killed and a similar number left missing when rivers of lava poured down the volcano’s slopes, devastating a nearby village.

Trade vessel struck by projectile in Strait of Hormuz amid US-Iran talks

    August 4, 2026 9:47am EDT / Fox News

The incident occurred 23 miles northeast of Al Khasab in Oman as Trump insists a denuclearization deal is ‘imminent’

A trade vessel in the Strait of Hormuz reported being struck by a projectile overnight Tuesday as it was transiting near the coast of Oman.

The incident, reported to U.K. Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), comes amid conflicting reports of Iran participating in peace talks with the U.S. this week. President Donald Trump said on Monday that a deal to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz and denuclearize Iran was “imminent.”

The UKMTO offered few details about the incident, saying only that the vessel had been struck “by an unknown projectile” at roughly 2 a.m. local time while it was 23 miles northeast of Al Khasab in Oman. The UKMTO did not clarify the name of the vessel or what flag it was flying under, nor did it note any injuries from the incident.

The British maritime security firm Ambrey confirmed the ship suffered damage but did not elaborate.

The incident comes as Iran has denied engaging in talks with the U.S., despite statements from multiple parties that talks are indeed ongoing.

Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said Tuesday said all parties were engaged in mediation and are “looking into a diplomatic solution.”

A spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry denied talks with the U.S. on Monday, saying Tehran was only involved in negotiations with Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump acknowledged the mixed messages with frustration in a number of statements on Monday, insisting that Tehran officials were engaged in talks with the U.S. regardless of what they were saying publicly.

TRUMP WARNS IRAN FIGHTING ISN’T OVER AS HE VOWS US WILL ‘WIN’ AS TALKS FADE

“They ask for a meeting, some would say ‘beg,’ talks begin, with more scheduled in the immediate future, and they say, openly and proudly, that they’re not having any discussions, that nothing is being talked about, and they’re only dealing with ‘Oman’,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

“For some reason they, when they’re talking, they don’t like saying that they’re talking,” Trump said later during an Oval Office event. “So I say we’re in talks, big deal, we’re in talks. And they’ll sometimes deny it even though they spend hours and hours together talking.”

More companies are moving away from broad”peanut butter”-style pay raises for workers in favor of merit-based and other kinds of compensation sweeteners for top employees, according to new insights from Payscale.

The trend toward rewarding strong individual performers within a business marks a shift away from companies spreading pay hikes evenly across their workforces. Just 32% of employers say they are planning a standard, across-the-board increase for workers in 2027, down from 36% who did so in 2026, according to Payscale, a compensation and benefits software company.

“We are seeing organizations realize that they need to deploy pay strategically,” Ruth Thomas, Payscale’s chief compensation strategist, told CBS News. “They need to think about business transformation, and part of driving that is allocating pay budgets differently.”

The findings are based on a Payscale survey of roughly 1,300 human resources and compensation executives in May and June.

How big a raise in 2027?

For 2027, employers plan to raise their base pay by an average of 3.5%, up a meager 0.1 percentage point from this year’s hike, according to Payscale’s data.

“The size of the compensation budget pie is not getting bigger, but there’s a shift in how employers are choosing to slice it,” Thomas said.

Such pay increases will keep worker pay ahead of inflation, but perhaps not by much, she added. Consumer prices rose at an annual rate of 3.5% in July, according to recent government data, although economists expect inflation to cool in the second half of the year and into 2027.

Employees in some industries could see considerably larger — and smaller — raises than 3.5%, according to Payscale. For example, businesses in the aerospace and defense sector are planning an average base pay increase of 4.5% for 2027, while pharmaceutical companies are planning on 4% pay bumps.

Here are the average pay hikes workers in different industries can expect in 2027, according to Payscale:

    • Aerospace and defense: 4.5%
    • Business services: 4.5%
    • Legal services: 4.2%
    • Pharmaceutical and biotechnology: 4%
    • Construction: 3.9%
    • Distribution, logistics and transportation: 3.8%
    • Architecture, engineering and design: 3.6%
    • Manufacturing: 3.6%
    • Education: 3.5%
    • Energy and utilities: 3.5%
    • Financial services: 3.4%
    • Food, beverage and hospitality: 3.4%
    • Insurance: 3.4%
    • Real estate, rental and leasing: 3.4%
    • Technology: 3.4%
    • Consumer goods: 3.3%
    • Media, sports and entertainment: 3.3%
    • Nonprofit: 3.3%
    • Retail: 3.3%
    • Healthcare and social assistance: 3.2%
    • Government: 3%
    • Telecommunications: 2.5%

    《The Scoop》

Capitol Hill staffers typically rely on private conversations and faceless social media accounts to identify toxic offices — but a new platform is offering a verified place to anonymously rate and review members of Congress and the workplaces they run.

Capitol CNCT, a program designed to centralize resources for congressional staffers, launched on July 20 a new tool called “The Scoop,” where verified staffers can share anonymous, but verified, reviews of the offices where they’re employed.

Former staffer David Tennent told Fox News Digital he founded Capitol CNCT to modernize the experience for young people working in congressional offices in Washington, D.C. He said the idea of the new ranking system emerged due to growing frustration over the number of “bad bosses” and “toxic offices” in the halls of Congress.

“I wanted to create something that gave a little bit more transparency to the process and help staffers find the best opportunities available,” he said in an interview detailing his inspiration for the new tool.

Just a week after launch, verified reviews are already beginning to paint an early picture of workplace culture across Capitol Hill.

While most offices still have only a handful of ratings, the highest-rated House offices so far are Reps. Nick LaLota, R-N.Y., Abe Hamadeh, R-Ariz., Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., Michael Rulli, R-Ohio, and Robert Garcia, D-Calif.

Among Senate offices, the top five were Sens. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., Todd Young, R-Ind., Thom Tillis, R-N.C., Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., and Kevin Cramer, R-N.D.

Across both chambers, the five lowest-rated offices were Rep. Don Davis, D-N.C., Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., Rep. Julia Brownley, D-Calif., Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., and Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo.

The offices of Davis, Krishnamoorthi, Brownley, Van Hollen and Bennet did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on their rankings.

ANGER SWELLS AFTER SWALWELL’S ‘OPEN SECRET’ WITH WOMEN WENT UNREPORTED FOR YEARS

There is no centralized human resources department for members’ offices on the Hill — making it tricky for staffers to report toxic or abusive workplaces.

“The Scoop” aims to offer a reliable place where people can leave and review feedback from staff who have gone through a verification process, which ensures anyone leaving a review actually works in the office they are rating.

“We verify the office in which they’ve worked,” Tennent told Fox News Digital. “We sift through all reviews before they go live to our platform to make sure that staffer has actually worked in that office.”

Reviews are only published if the user leaving feedback passes Capitol CNCT’s background screening to ensure they have at some point worked for the member of Congress they are commenting on. The process includes verifying House and Senate email addresses attached to the account are legitimate.

“My biggest fear was just creating like a political retribution platform, right?” Tennent explained. “Where you can just go on and destroy people without any evidence or verification that you’ve been a part of that process.”

Tennent revealed that Republican offices are almost twice as likely to be reviewed than Democrats’ offices so far.

The launch last month comes amid heightened scrutiny of workplace culture on Capitol Hill after multiple offices faced misconduct allegations this year.

REPUBLICAN LAWMAKER WELCOMES HOUSE ETHICS PROBE INTO SEXUAL MISCONDUCT ALLEGATIONS AGAINST HIM

Many members of Congress have either resigned or been under fire this year for allegations of inappropriate behavior with members of their staff.

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., and Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, both resigned in April after staffers from their offices came forward with accusations of sexual misconduct — including rape accusations against Swalwell.

“We happened to be able to launch it right in this timeframe where this congressional ethics or lack of morality discussion is really hitting its high pitch,” Tennent said.

Tennent said that while the main purpose of the app is to give staffers, or those considering working on the Hill, verifiable reviews about what it is like working for certain members of Congress, he also hopes it will serve as constructive criticism for members and their offices “to create a better working Congress.”

“We do want to provide like constructive criticism in this process,” Tennent said

He continued, “Our hope is that if a chief of staff or a member sees that their office is very poorly rated, that over time they’re gonna go, ‘Oh, this is a wake-up call for me. Let me implement some strategies to boost office morale, to change how we communicate with each other.’”

10-year-old rescued from rip current by teen lifeguard says he thought he was going to die

    August 4, 2026 / 11:57 AM EDT / CBS News

A 10-year-old boy who was saved from a rip current off the coast of Santa Cruz, California, last month said he thought he was going to die before a 16-year-old lifeguard rescued him.

“I’m super thankful for him saving my life,” Nathaniel Rai said about the teen lifeguard, Ryder Williams.

Nathaniel told “CBS Mornings” that “the waves were really big” that day at the beach so he stayed on the shore. But at one point he tripped and got pulled into the water.

Nathaniel’s father, Sumit Rai, said his son was “a second or two away from dying” and he’s “forever grateful” for Williams, who was the first person to respond.

“Ryder knew that if he lets go Nathaniel is going to drown,” Sumit Rai said. At that point, he said, Nathaniel was unconscious and not breathing.

“He just did everything he was supposed to do to save his (Nathaniel’s) life and put himself at risk to do so,” he said.

Sumit Rai also expressed gratitude for the other lifeguard who assisted and the good Samaritans who jumped in to help save his son.

“I appreciate each and every one of them, incredibly so, because, you know, it took that effort to bring him out and keep him alive. I’m just so grateful to have my son with me. I can’t imagine what life would look like had Ryder not been there,” he said.

In a statement last week, Ryder Williams said he too was grateful. “I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to return the child to his family safely. This is my job and I love what I do. I’m thankful to my fellow lifeguards who perform rescues just like this every day,” he said.
