麦克斯韦因性交易罪 currently serving a 20-year prison sentence。

Senate Judiciary Committee advances Blanche’s nomination for attorney general

    August 4, 2026 / 11:04 AM EDT / CBS News

Washington — The Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday advanced Todd Blanche’s nomination for attorney general to the Senate floor, clearing a key hurdle for President Trump’s pick to lead the Justice Department.

The GOP-led panel voted 12-10 along party lines to advance Blanche’s nomination. The acting attorney general overcame skepticism from Republican Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina over the $1.8 billion fund designed to compensate victims of alleged “weaponization” by the government and earned their support.

The concerns from Tillis and Cornyn over the program and a sweeping deal to grant the president immunity from tax audits threatened to derail Blanche’s nomination. But late Sunday, following weeks of negotiations with the senators, Blanche issued a new order that rescinded his initial directive creating the “anti-weaponization” fund and clarified that the immunity provision covers only potential audits of previous years’ tax returns and applies only to Mr. Trump, his two oldest sons and the Trump Organization.

The order from Blanche does not modify the terms of the settlement agreement that Mr. Trump reached with the IRS in May to resolve a civil lawsuit over the leak of his tax returns by a former government contractor. The president has continued to express support for the “anti-weaponization” fund and threatened Saturday to revive it if Cornyn and Tillis opposed Blanche as attorney general.

Still, Cornyn and Tillis said in a joint statement Monday that they are “pleased” with the formal order ending the fund. The Justice Department’s acknowledgement of the limits of the tax immunity deal addresses concerns from multiple GOP colleagues, the two senators said.

“We want to express our gratitude to Mr. Blanche and his staff for working with us on this, and we look forward to voting to advance his nomination out of the Senate Judiciary Committee soon,” Cornyn and Tillis said.

In remarks during the Judiciary Committee’s hearing, the two senators defended the terms they laid out in order to support Blanche’s nomination and the commitments they secured from the Justice Department.

“Given this agreement with Mr. Blanche, I expect the department to live up to this in future litigation,” Cornyn said, adding that his vote to advance Blanche’s nomination “goes beyond this document. We need a stabilizing force at the Department of Justice and Mr. Blanche deserves the opportunity to provide that.”

The department, he said, “does not need a temporary, unconfirmed nominee as our nation’s top law enforcement officer.”

With Blanche’s nomination for attorney general advancing out of the Senate Judiciary Committee, it heads to the full Senate for a vote. A simple majority is needed to confirm him to the post.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, thanked Cornyn and Tillis for working with the Justice Department to address concerns about Mr. Trump’s immunity deal with the IRS and the “anti-weaponization” fund.

“It’s just common sense, what Tillis and Cornyn are asking out of the executive branch of government,” he said, adding “it’s a crime that it took so long” to secure clarifications on the limits of the tax deal.

Grassley said that since Blanche took the helm of the Justice Department in a temporary capacity, it has “thrived under his leadership.”

“Today, I’m not only voting to advance Todd Blanche’s nomination, I’m voting for the safety of the American people,” he said.

But Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the top Democrat on the Judiciary panel, said Blanche “has no business” leading the Justice Department, and he accused the acting attorney general of attempting to reshape the department by firing longtime officials and replacing them “with unqualified MAGA loyalists who will rubber-stamp President Trump’s corruption.”

“His word is not enough for most, not even for some of my Republican friends. Even his word under oath is not credible enough,” Durbin said, highlighting demands from senators that Blanche commit his promises to writing.

The Illinois Democrat stressed that Blanche’s new orders regarding the settlement agreement between Mr. Trump and the IRS are not signed by the parties — which include the president’s two oldest sons and the Trump Organization — and are therefore “unenforceable.” The president and his sons could still sue to enforce the original terms of the deal, and the “anti-weaponization” fund can be revived shortly after Blanche is confirmed, Durbin warned.

“To my Republican colleagues, you gave Mr. Blanche the benefit of the doubt when you supported his nomination to be deputy attorney general,” he said. “Seventeen months later, there is no doubt where his loyalty will lie.”

Blanche has been serving as acting attorney general since Pam Bondi was removed as the nation’s top law enforcement officer in April. Mr. Trump nominated Blanche for attorney general in June.

A former personal defense lawyer for Mr. Trump, Blanche came under scrutiny from members of the Judiciary Committee over the Justice Department’s handling of the release of files related to the federal investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, his meeting last year with Epstein’s former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell, and the department’s settlement with Mr. Trump to resolve his civil lawsuit against the IRS.

That deal included the creation of the $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund that would provide payments to people who claimed they were targeted by the federal government for political reasons. The Justice Department also had agreed to grant Mr. Trump immunity from IRS audits and investigations related to prior tax returns.

Blanche had said before that the Justice Department is not moving forward with the “anti-weaponization” program, but until Sunday, he declined to confirm in writing that it was dead, raising questions as to whether it could be revived in a different form.

When pressed by senators during his confirmation hearing about the status of the fund, Blanche said it’s “dead” and “doesn’t exist anymore.” But in written responses to senators, he declined to provide information about discussions within the Justice Department about the program.

With Republicans controlling 12 of the 22 seats on the Judiciary Committee, Cornyn and Tillis were key votes for Blanche to secure.

Tillis said earlier this month that Blanche needed to meet with survivors of Epstein’s sex-trafficking operation before he voted to advance his nomination out of the Judiciary Committee. The acting attorney general met with a group of survivors at the Justice Department and said the meeting was “productive.”

But the group continued to urge Cornyn and Tillis to vote against Blanche’s nomination, saying in a letter to the senators that during their meeting with the acting attorney general, he “showed no remorse for the horrific release of materials that exposed survivors’ identities and images.” They also said he “gave no indication that he believed there were investigative leads worth pursuing, or that he intended to seek accountability beyond Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.”

Blanche was serving as deputy attorney general when the Justice Department released more than 3 million pages of documents from its investigations into Epstein and Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence for sex-trafficking crimes. The files’ disclosure was required under a federal law called the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

But some of the records contained survivors’ unredacted names and personal information. Blanche acknowledged “mistakes” were made by the Justice Department in its failure to shield survivors’ information and said the administration worked to rectify them, including by swiftly taking documents down.

Blanche also conducted a two-day interview with Maxwell last year, during which he asked Maxwell about her relationship with Epstein and other powerful people in his orbit. Shortly after their meeting, Maxwell was moved from a low-security federal correctional facility in Tallahassee, Florida, to a minimum-security prison camp in Bryan, Texas.

Aug 4 (Reuters) – New Jersey sued Amazon.com on Tuesday, accusing the online retailer of abusing its market power over independent delivery drivers.

The state accused Amazon of using its dominance to impose low pay and poor conditions on drivers who deliver for the company via its Delivery Service Partner program. The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Newark, New Jersey.

The Reuters Daily Briefing newsletter provides all the news you need to start your day. Sign up here.

The program is run by Amazon’s logistics arm and allows people to set up businesses to deliver packages locally. Those small businesses deliver 20 million packages a day for Amazon globally, according to the company.

The state alleges that Amazon punishes drivers who try to unionize and tries to keep independent businesses in the program from poaching each other’s drivers in violation of antitrust law.

A spokesperson for Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Amazon is fighting other antitrust lawsuits brought by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the state of California accusing the company of illegally monopolizing online retail markets. The company has denied those allegations.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., could be facing headwinds in his quest for power even if Democrats win back Congress’ upper chamber in November.

Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., who is running in a heated primary against incumbent Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., said during a debate Monday night that he would not support Schumer as leader if elected.

“The first vote that I take when I get to the United States Senate will be for not Senator Schumer, because we need new leadership at the top as well,” Moulton said.

He was alluding to the selection of each party’s leadership ranks, which generally comes after the November election.

Markey also did not explicitly endorse Schumer for leader, but he has supported him in the past. Markey’s campaign directed Fox News Digital to the senator’s comments during the debate when asked about his support for Schumer.

“We need a big debate about new leadership in the Senate – the direction of the Senate,” Markey said.

It’s a notable move for both Democrats to distance themselves from the current party leader, as the primary for Massachusetts’ Senate seat has been marked by bitter accusations on both sides.

Moulton has accused Markey of selling out his beliefs by taking money from fossil fuel groups, and slammed the 80-year-old senator for his age and lengthy tenure in Congress. Meanwhile, Markey has attacked Moulton for investing in defense companies that the House committees he sits on have jurisdiction over, and his prior comments on transgender participation in youth sports.

The Salem-area House Democrat has a notable history of challenging his party’s leadership. In 2018, he led a rebellion within his caucus to challenge former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., from keeping her leadership post.

He said in a 2019 HuffPost interview that Democratic leadership was “failing” in standing up to President Donald Trump and accused leaders of fueling divisions within the caucus.

Now that fight is playing out in deep blue Massachusetts as part of a wider national war within the Democratic Party. Younger candidates are challenging the establishment left in races across the U.S., arguing that the status quo is not working for Americans today.

HOUSE PROGRESSIVES REVIVE GREEN NEW DEAL FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS AS DEM CIVIL WAR EMPOWERS FAR LEFT

“If you think the Democratic establishment is winning for Massachussetts, if you think it’s fine that the Democratic establishment has allowed asecond term of Donald Trump, then vote for the status quo,” Moulton said during the debate.

Schumer is not up for re-election until 2028, but he must face his fellow Senate Democrats every two years in the internal leadership race to make a case for why he should stay at the helm.

And younger candidates like Moulton could pose issues for him on that front.

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., who at 53 years old is younger than a significant number of his colleagues, was evasive when asked if Schumer should remain in leadership during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” in March.

SCHUMER DODGES QUESTION ON WHETHER DSA BELONGS IN DEMOCRATIC PARTY

“Well, I think we are united right now as a caucus. There’s always a lot of focus on Senator Schumer and House Minority Leader Jeffries,” Murphy said when asked if he supported Schumer, who he said had a “tough job.”

    2026-08-04T15:04:16.935Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/04/politics/todd-blanches-confirmation-expected-revitalize-doj-investigations

Todd Blanche advances toward confirmation, paving way for reenergized Justice Department investigations

    2026-08-04T15:04:16.935Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/04/politics/todd-blanches-confirmation-expected-revitalize-doj-investigations

Todd Blanche’s nomination for attorney general passed a key hurdle Tuesday, advancing through the Senate Judiciary Committee vote after weeks of protest from Republicans who wanted assurances that he would take steps to rein one of the department’s most controversial blunders.

He now faces his final test to earn the job: earning the vote of nearly every Republican on the Senate floor.

Blanche, President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer, has aggressively pursued the president’s agenda since he took over on an interim basis in April. The acting attorney general knew that he had to quickly show the White House that he can deliver results in cases the president wanted prioritized — particularly in investigations tied to his political priorities and perceived foes.

He has pursued criminal actions against people and organizations the president has criticized, accelerated scrutiny into the government’s response to alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and launched — then discontinued — a nearly $1.8 billion plan intended to compensate people who believe they were wrongly targeted by the criminal justice system.

But since his formal nomination, the attorney general’s office has entered a period of relative silence as it relates to controversial political cases — an interlude that sources say could set the stage for a new push once Blanche is confirmed by the Senate.

Some investigations that have not yet resulted in charges have seen less visible activity during his confirmation process, including the broad probe related to the Trump-Russia investigation. But people with knowledge of pending investigations say public activity is expected to return.

Other parts of the Justice Department, meanwhile, have continued to press forward on matters viewed as central to the administration, including large-scale fraud cases and immigration enforcement.

And new issues are beginning to pop up for Blanche’s team, particularly those related to the upcoming midterm elections. The Justice Department will have to grapple with the president’s longstanding accusations of widespread voter fraud, a test it so far has avoided.

Blanche was thrust into the job after Pam Bondi, the former attorney general, bungled the handling of the Epstein files and ignited a political firestorm that continues to cause problems for Trump and the Justice Department. Trump eventually fired Bondi after months of discussing her failure to aggressively bring cases against his personal and political foes.

But the final hurdles to his nomination were problems of his own making. Blanche oversaw an unprecedented settlement agreement between Trump and his own administration over an IRS contractor’s leak of Trump’s tax information.

Much of the furor focused on a nearly $1.8 billion dollar so-called “anti-weaponization fund” that was intended to benefit Trump supporters, including potentially Jan. 6 Capitol rioters. Blanche long ago admitted the fund was a mistake and said that it would not proceed. At his confirmation hearing, under questioning from Sen. John Cornyn, of Texas, Blanche acknowledged an addendum was still in force that granted Trump and his family immunity from IRS audits and possibly any other investigation for matters not even known.

In addition to Cornyn, who lost his primary election in May, Blanche also had to win the vote of North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis, who is not seeking reelection.

The issue became so contentious that Republicans had to delay the committee vote out of fear that Blanche would fail to win enough support, as Tillis and Cornyn publicly accused one of Trump’s political advisors of sabotaging White House approval for a potential agreement.

Blanche’s team and Cornyn’s chief legal counsel went through contentious negotiations for several days, going back and forth several times to come up with specific language that Blanche could use confirm that the deal was indeed dead. Lat Sunday night, Blanche announced a resolution.

Blanche shared two documents in a post on X, one a signed memo stating that the Justice Department was formally rescinding the order that established anti-weaponization fund, and a second, unsigned statement clarifying the terms of the IRS protections. Tillis and Cornyn quickly affirmed their approval of the deal.

Cornyn on Tuesday thanked Blanche for working with his staff on the orders, and said that he expects the department to “live up” to their agreement in potential future cases.

“We need a stabilizing force at the Department of Justice, and Mr. Blanche deserves the opportunity to provide that, as opposed to continuing to serve in an acting capacity,” Cornyn said.

Tillis, for his part, said he was “going to support mr. Blanche’s nomination, but what I hope I see out of him is a bending of the curve of this absurdity.”

Their votes were vital, since Blanche required the backing of all Republicans on the Judiciary Committee to proceed to a final vote on his confirmation.

“It’s just a crime that it took so long to work out with such a common sense thing that’s pretty simple,” Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley said at the start of Tuesday’s hearing.

Tillis had also chastised Blanche over the bungled release of the Epstein files, which initially included documents that had victims’ photos or personal information. At his confirmation hearing Blanche acknowledged that “mistakes were made” in the process but still defended the effort.

Tillis said in mid-July that he would not vote for Blanche if the acting attorney general did not meet with Epstein survivors, which they had repeatedly requested. Blanche’s staff arranged that meeting the same day.

Once it was over, Tillis posted on social media that Blanche “is the first Attorney General who has even offered to meet with the victims.” The post was quickly edited to replace the sentence with: “I commend Todd Blanche for doing what all his predecessors over the last two decades never did.”

Blanche has also worked with senators outside the committee, most notably with Lisa Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska. Blanche took a two-day trip to the state earlier this month, where he met with local and tribal leaders.

The department agreed to an $180 million settlement with Anchorage over unfinished work on the port of Alaska, dropped two Biden-era lawsuits about the state’s oil and gas production, dropped a $400 million settlement with a group that provides healthcare services to American Indians and Alaska Natives, and awarded $6.1 million in grants to local law enforcement, tribal governments, and nonprofits to combat crime.

Pirro brought box of evidence to show Trump what caused Reflecting Pool damage

    August 4, 2026 / 11:56 AM EDT / CBS News

The top federal prosecutor in the nation’s capital carted a box full of evidence to the White House on Monday, in a bid to prove to President Trump that the damage to the Reflecting Pool was caused by shoddy construction and not by vandals, sources familiar with the matter told CBS News on Tuesday.

U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro, a staunch ally of the president, made the case in a sometimes heated private meeting in the Oval Office Monday, hours after Mr. Trump had publicly rebuked her for dropping criminal charges against Olympic canoeist David Hearn.

She was later photographed leaving the White House carting a large white box and other bags, which sources said contained all of the evidence collected from the Interior Department that exculpated Hearn and several others from criminal vandalism.

A spokesperson for Pirro’s office declined comment.

U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro departs White House, Aug. 3, 2026. CBS News

Mr. Trump earlier in the day had accused Pirro of folding “like an umbrella,” after her office on Friday filed a motion dismissing the felony case against Hearn.

In the motion, prosecutors blamed the Interior Department for holding back critical evidence that they claimed they did not see until after they had secured the indictment from the grand jury in D.C.’s Superior Court. They said new information they had received indicated that the damage was caused by a “botched installation” by a contractor, not vandalism, as the president and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum claimed. On Saturday, Burgum said in a post on X, “The evidence is clear, vandals have repeatedly caused damage to the Reflecting Pool.”

The U.S. attorney’s office has also since moved to dismiss criminal charges against three others accused of vandalizing the Reflecting Pool.

Pirro’s office has suffered a number of high-profile setbacks involving cases related to Mr. Trump’s enemies and topics of personal interest to him.

Earlier this year, a grand jury uniformly refused to indict six Democratic lawmakers for posting a video urging military members not to follow orders they believe are illegal. Historically, a grand jury refusing to return an indictment is highly unusual, let alone having a grand jury unanimously refuse to do so.

Then, the chief judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia quashed grand jury subpoenas issued by Pirro’s office to investigate former Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell and the Fed itself in connection with a costly renovation and statements he made to Congress about that work.

In doing so, the judge said the subpoenas were merely a pretext to pressure Powell to lower interest rates. Pirro later dropped the investigation, but not before several of her deputies first made an unannounced visit to the Fed’s construction site and tried to gain access to the property before being turned away.
