    • Summary
    • Trump does not rule out demolishing the performing arts complex
    • After ousting trustees, he installed administration officials on the board
    • Trump cited a ceiling collapse video as proof the building is deteriorating

WASHINGTON, Sept 18 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday refused to say ‌whether he would attempt to demolish the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the iconic facility on Washington’s Potomac River.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump repeated his belief that the center should append his name to the building in exchange for his work to raise money to renovate the facility. He falsely claimed the center faced long-term financial strains that required dramatic action, although the facility posted profits in seven of the past nine years, according to its tax filings.

“I think the Trump administration should be recognized as having saved the Kennedy Center because nobody else remembers,” Trump said.

The Kennedy Center board, which has said the facility requires a $257 million renovation, earlier this week voted to close the facility for two years for the project. US District Judge Christopher Cooper subsequently ordered the Trump administration to explain whether the closure violates a court order limiting its ability to shut down.

Cooper also ordered the administration to provide 30 days’ notice before taking steps to demolish the building.

“President Trump is holding ‌the Kennedy Center hostage,” said Norm Eisen and Nathaniel Zelinsky, attorneys representing U.S. Representative Joyce Beatty, an Ohio Democrat and ex-officio member of the center’s board who is leading litigation against the administration over its plans for the facility.

Representatives for the center did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.

The board, chaired by Trump and controlled by his appointees, earlier this year attempted to rename the facility the “Trump-Kennedy Center” and went so far as to add the president’s name to the building. After Cooper ruled that only Congress could rename the center, the board installed a tarp over the front facade of the building that has remained there as the legal fight continues.

Trump told reporters on Friday that adding his name to the building would be a show of “bipartisanship,” because Trump is a Republican and Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963, was a Democrat.

He called Cooper “hostile,” and described the center — which features a concert hall, opera house, theater and 12 additional performance and meeting spaces — as a “dump.”

WASHINGTON, Sept 18 (Reuters) – US President Donald Trump said on Friday his son, Donald Trump Jr., has told him he would pay back ‌a Russian oligarch who bankrolled wedding celebrations for him in the Bahamas in May.

Democrats in the US Congress launched an investigation this week into reports that Umar Kremlev, a wealthy Russian businessman and president of the International Boxing Association, paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for the wedding festivities.

ProPublica, which first reported Kremlev’s involvement, said he has close ties to the Russian government.

Trump told reporters on Friday that when he asked his son about the report, he responded, “‘No, I’m paying it back, Dad.’ And that was a while ago. So I heard he’s paying.”

A person familiar with the situation confirmed that Don Jr. planned to reimburse Kremlev.

Kremlev and the IBA did not immediately respond to requests for comment late ‌on Friday.

The president, who did not attend his son’s wedding, said in a statement earlier in the week that he does not know Kremlev and that the wedding controversy is “not a big deal!”

Trump said on Friday he has given wedding parties to “numerous people” at “beautiful places” like his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida.

“They get married, I give them a party,” Trump said. “With all of that being said, I understand that Don’s paid him back.”

Don Jr.’s wife, Bettina Trump, in an Instagram post on Monday called Kremlev a friend who extended an “extraordinarily generous wedding gift,” stressing that Kremlev paid for two after-parties, not the wedding itself.

Russia sanctions bill gives Trump sweeping new tariff powers

    2026-09-18T20:24:54.959Z / reuters.com

WASHINGTON, Sept 18 (Reuters) – The Russia sanctions bill signed into law by US President Donald Trump on Friday gives him new powers to impose tariffs that could last well beyond his presidency, injecting more uncertainty into the global economy after nearly two years of trade wars.

The immediate impact may be limited, given Trump’s reluctance to take actions that could push consumer prices higher ahead of the November midterm elections, when control of Congress is at stake, analysts said.

The Misinformation Monitor newsletter rounds up international misinformation narratives, with a “Real or Fake?” quiz in every edition. Sign up here.

But critics say the legislation, ‌which imposes tariffs on Russia’s biggest trading partners, has broad language that could herald trouble for other countries as well if they find themselves in Trump’s crosshairs in the future.

The bill requires Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% within 30 days on all goods imported into the US from the five largest importers of Russian crude oil or gas as well as any country that knowingly made new purchases of oil or gas 30 days after the law was enacted or was among the top five countries helping Russia evade sanctions.

China and India are among the biggest buyers of Russian oil, but critics say the law gives US officials enough leeway to name a range of targets since it does not name any country or spell out how the top-five lists would be calculated.

“Given the discretionary authority that the president has, it is likely to be abused,” said Laura Brank, a lawyer at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner who focuses on cross-border transactions.

Since returning to office in January 2025, Trump has imposed tariffs of up to 50% on more than 80 countries, though the Supreme Court has struck down many of them, saying he exceeded his authority. Trump has cited a variety of reasons, including disagreements with foreign leaders, for his actions.

Challenging the latest tariffs in court could be difficult since the law specifically calls for the duties, while previous challenges to tariffs have successfully argued that the Trump administration misapplied laws from decades earlier.

US Representative Don Beyer, a Virginia Democrat, argued that Trump had wrongly used existing trade laws to pursue his agenda in the past and is likely to do the same with the new law. The White House has denied abusing any trade laws.

“We don’t know when, but you don’t need a crystal ball to know what is likely to happen next,” Beyer said on social media.

Once Trump agreed to move forward with the bill in July after over a year of delays, US officials pushed for quick passage to give Trump additional leverage in his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping next week, according to congressional sources.

US officials have tried to reassure lawmakers that the measure has sufficient guardrails, while acknowledging its significance in handing control of tariffs to the White House.

“It is the first time in nearly forty years that Congress has granted new tariff authorities to the executive branch,” White House legislative director James Braid said in a post on X on Wednesday.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment on concerns about the broader scope of the measure.

LACK OF CLARITY ON ‌TARGET COUNTRIES

The sweeping package, which passed Congress on Wednesday, aims to deprive Russia of funds used to pay for its nearly five-year war on Ukraine. The legislation authorizes sanctions against Russia’s energy and defense industries, as well as its “shadow fleet” of tankers used to evade existing sanctions.

Moscow on Thursday said further US sanctions against Russia would make it harder to reach a peace deal in Ukraine.

Jeannette Chu, vice president of the National Foreign Trade Council, a trade group that advocates for open trade, said different entities had differing assessments of which countries could be hit with tariffs since no firm criteria were spelled out. The countries speculated as likely include Brazil, India, Japan and countries in the European Union, she said.

China said it “consistently opposed long-arm jurisdiction that lacks a basis in international law” while India warned Washington that new tariffs could impact bilateral ties.

In a worst-case scenario, Chu said, Ukraine itself could suffer if the new tariffs cut off Russian oil and gas supplies for refined products in EU countries, given it relies on diesel from refineries in Hungary and Slovakia.

Not everyone agrees the bill gives the Trump administration too much leeway. The conservative think tank Foundation for Defense of Democracies argues that the bill lays out sufficient criteria on which countries can be hit and rejects the idea that it gives Trump a back door to imposing other tariffs. It noted that the original version of the bill required even higher tariffs of 500%.

    RISKY TIMING

Any new duties would have to be announced just days before the midterm elections, which could push oil prices higher at a time when voters are already unhappy over rising costs. Trump’s popularity has declined since he launched a war on Iran in February that has disrupted oil shipments from the Middle East.

“Given the state of the current energy markets, it certainly seems risky,” said Ryan Majerus, a former senior US official who served under both Democratic and Republican presidents and is now with law firm King & Spalding. He says Trump could get around the timing issue by imposing a zero-rate tariff and revising it later, at will.

Others say Trump’s reluctance to take tough action against Russia since returning to office raises questions about how he will implement the legislation, which also gives Trump broad authority to waive tariffs or sanctions for national security reasons. That would let him avoid hitting Moscow or its backers harder, simply by notifying Congress, they said.

“This is entirely discretionary,” said Ben Harris, a former senior Treasury Department official under former Democratic President Joe Biden. “The definitions are vague and the president has kind of a get-out-of-jail-free card in the form of a waiver.”

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang calls for AI to be developed “as fast as we can”

    2026-09-18 7:14 PM EDT / CBS News

The CEO of the world’s largest chipmaker told CBS News that tech companies should push forward with the development of artificial intelligence despite recent warnings from worried industry leaders that there may be a need to pull back due to unease about where the technology could be headed.

“We should go as fast as we can irrespective of anybody else,” Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang told CBS News senior business and technology correspondent Jo Ling Kent in an interview airing this weekend on “Sunday Morning” when asked if AI development needs to slow down.

“We’re going to go as fast as we can, but we would never ever, and never should, ship products before they’re ready, deliver products that are unsafe,” Huang said. “And nobody’s expecting us to do that. But everybody’s expecting us to succeed and help America be as prosperous as possible.”

The Santa Clara-based Nvidia, the world’s most valuable company with a market capitalization above $5 trillion, has achieved its growth with the help of the AI boom.

However, concern has grown in recent weeks over the speed at which AI is developing, with some calling for guardrails and government regulation.

The conversation was spurred in part by Jacob Coxon, a researcher at AI giant Anthropic who publicly resigned his position earlier this month, saying that AI companies are rushing to innovate at the expense of proper security protocols. Coxon told CBS News that without such intervention, AI could one day pose a threat to humanity. The Trump administration has so far generally been dismissive of those fears.

Days later, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei appeared to echo some of Coxon’s concerns, admitting to Kent in an interview that “for too long the industry lied to people about the fact that this technology had risks,” and saying the technology was developing at an “exponential” rate.

“It doesn’t mean we need to panic today. It doesn’t mean we need to shut it all down,” Amodei said, but added that it is “a warning sign that we need to slow down.”

    2026-09-18T22:17:27.891Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/18/politics/trump-us-greenland-security

Trump says US reached Greenland security deal

    2026-09-18T22:17:27.891Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/18/politics/trump-us-greenland-security

President Donald Trump said Friday that the United States has reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that gives the United States “permanent control” over Greenland’s security and bars any US adversary from having a military presence on the island.

“The United States of America has entered into an Agreement with The Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland, that gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns. There will be NO COST to the United States!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, going on to call the arrangement “an ‘Infinite Life’ Agreement.

“Additionally, from now on, no U.S. adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval,” Trump said.

He added that the US would “immediately begin” building its own “large military presence” and work with the people in Greenland, a Danish territory, on “its development and construction.”

The United States, Greenland and Denmark are expected to sign an agreement on “strengthened security in the Arctic and North Atlantic Area” next week at the UN General Assembly, the Danish prime minister’s office said a statement.

“I am glad that we are about to make a great agreement for Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, and the United States,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said, adding that the agreement would be “great for NATO and Europe as well.”

She also said the agreement “recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.”

Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said “the agreement recognizes Greenland’s interests and our place in the international cooperation,” adding, “It is to the benefit of us all.”

The signed agreement would still have to go through parliamentary procedures.

A US official said the agreement includes “permanent access, basing, and overflight rights” for the US on the island.

The agreement blocks non-NATO countries, including China and Russia, from having a base or sending troops to Greenland, the official said, adding that it guarantees “the necessary mechanisms are in place to prevent investment in sensitive sectors.”

Russia has expanded its military footprint in the Arctic for decades, and China has also deepened its presence there.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement the agreement “permanently and completely addresses our national security concerns in Greenland.”

Earlier this year, Trump repeatedly insisted on the importance of the United States obtaining Greenland for national security purposes, but discussion on the matter had largely faded from public view in recent months.

Trump’s repeated claims about seizing Greenland set off a diplomatic crisis within the NATO alliance and a scramble to try to defuse the threat.

In January, after a meeting between Danish and Greenlandic officials and Vice President JD Vance and Rubio, the United States, Denmark and Greenland formed a “high-level working group to explore if we can find a common way forward” amid ongoing disputes around the sovereignty of the island, in the words of Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.

Later that month, at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, Trump said he had secured the “framework of a future deal” on Greenland.

That framework, and the agreement described on Friday, bear strong similarities to an existing 1951 pact between the US and Denmark that allowed broad US military presence in Greenland.

The US official noted that “under the previous status quo, any country, including adversaries, could be allowed to build a military base in Greenland or send troops to Greenland.”

“By contrast, under this agreement, no non-NATO country may build a base in Greenland or maintain a troop presence in Greenland,” they said.

Trump says he will demand some childhood vaccines be split into five shots

    September 18, 2026 8:22 PM UTC Updated 1 hour ago / Reuters

Sept 18 (Reuters) – US President Donald Trump said on Friday that his administration plans to demand vaccine makers split certain childhood shots into five ‌separate doses, which he believes will result in a massive reduction in autism, an idea repeatedly debunked by scientists.

Trump did not provide any scientific evidence linking vaccines and autism. Nor did he say which vaccines the administration plans to split into smaller doses.

“We’re going to recommend that they do five doses … and that they be given in six-month intervals so that a small amount of the vaccine gets pumped into the body,” Trump said, speaking at an event in the Oval Office.

Trump already signed an executive order in August calling for fewer childhood vaccinations by limiting the ‌inoculation schedule to 11 immunizations, which he said would give US children “gold-standard” protection and align the country with peer nations that recommend fewer shots.

That order directed Americans to receive separate measles, mumps and rubella vaccines even though none of the individual shots are licensed in the United States and experts say it could take years before any become available, if they ever do.
