Lawsuits filed in California over Nazi-looted art displayed in museums in Los Angeles, Auschwitz

    2026-09-19 17:52:53 EDT / CBS News / AP

Jewish heirs of Holocaust victims and their representatives have filed two lawsuits in California staking their claims to Nazi-looted paintings that still hang on the walls of prominent museums in Los Angeles and Auschwitz.

The two lawsuits are the first to be filed after the recent passage of laws by California and Congress, which strengthen U.S.-based claims to artworks that were forcibly taken from Jewish families during World War II.

One lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday by the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles and its board chair Daniel Gryczman against Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena for the return of “Adam and Eve.” These are two life-size oil-on-panel masterpieces created by Lucas Cranach the Elder in 1530.

This undated photo provided by the Norton Simon Art Foundation on Sept. 18, 2026, shows two oil paintings, “Adam and Eve,” painted in 1530 by Lucas Cranach the Elder, on display in the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California. Gerard Vuilleumier/Norton Simon Art Foundation via AP

The other lawsuit was filed in federal court in L.A. the same day by the daughters of the late Dinah Gottliebova Babbitt, a Holocaust survivor and California-based animator who was held in Auschwitz. It demanded the return of watercolors of fellow prisoners that the artist was forced to paint for Josef Mengele, a Nazi physician who had earned the nickname the “Angel of Death.”

Spokespersons for both museums say the museums legally hold titles to the works and intend to continue displaying them to the public. The lawsuits don’t specify the monetary value of the paintings.

The issue of Nazi-looted art is an emotional, legally and ethically charged topic that pits Jewish families that have suffered inter-generational trauma against museums that say they are trying to preserve a painful, yet important, chapter of history.

Between 1933 and 1945, the Nazi regime orchestrated the largest art theft in world history, seizing over 600,000 works of art across Europe from Jewish families, collectors and museums. Decades later, many of these masterpieces reside in prominent museums around the world, making the push for their recovery more complex than a simple property dispute.

Rabbi Noah Farkas is president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles, the organization to which Marei von Saher, sole heir of Dutch Jewish art dealer Jacques Goudstikker, has signed over her rights. The paintings were seized from Goudstikker’s collection by Hermann Göring, Adolf Hitler’s second-in-command, and changed hands several times before being sold in the 1960s to the Pasadena Museum of Modern Art, which was renamed the Norton Simon Museum in honor of its benefactor.

Farkas said the federation plans to use most of the net proceeds from the recovered art to provide much-needed help to the about 2,500 Holocaust survivors living in the L.A. area.

“These are incredibly beautiful European masterpieces stolen from a Jewish family to enrich the Nazi party and fund the war and death machine against the people,” he said. “It’s our honor to take on this role on behalf of the community and use most of the proceeds to help these elderly survivors live out the last years of their lives in dignity, comfort and peace – something their family members were denied during the Holocaust.”

Marei von Saher, in a statement, said she is grateful to the Jewish organization for taking up her family’s cause.

“This effort represents a meaningful step toward justice for Holocaust survivors and victims of Nazi era atrocities,” she said.

Democratic California Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel, who represents the Woodland Hills neighborhood of L.A., wrote Assembly Bill 2867, signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in September 2024, which requires that the state law must apply in lawsuits brought by California residents or their heirs to recover art seized during the Holocaust or during other acts of persecution. Gabriel, who co-chairs the California Legislative Jewish Caucus, introduced the legislation in response to a federal court ruling, which allowed the state-owned Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid to keep a multimillion-dollar Camille Pissarro impressionist masterpiece.

That painting had been taken by the Nazis from the Cassirer family in 1939. This case, which prompted this new law, is expected to be heard in federal court in California next month.

Gabriel said it’s time for museums to “do some deep introspection on whether they want to be on the right side of history.”

Norton Simon Museum released a statement pointing out that a federal court in 2018 unanimously determined that the museum had proper title to the Cranach paintings. In May 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to get involved in the case, leaving in place lower court rulings.

They said the Cranach paintings, which originally belonged to the Stroganoff family, were put up for sale in 1931 by the Soviet Union in an illicit auction in Berlin where they were purchased by Goudstikker. After a complicated journey, the paintings were sold to the museum by a Stroganoff family descendant. The museum later restored and preserved the pieces.

“For nearly 50 years, they have been on view at the Norton Simon Museum and will continue to be accessible to the public for years to come,” the statement said.

Pawel Sawicki, a spokesperson for the Auschwitz Memorial, said the watercolors of Roma victims that Gottliebova Babbitt was forced to paint by Mengele to document his horrendous experiments and racial research, “must remain in the Memorial” to document the man’s crimes. He said these paintings must not be mischaracterized as “Nazi-looted art” because Gottliebova Babbitt painted them against her will as a prisoner and therefore didn’t have ownership of the watercolors.

While he understands the family’s sentiments, Sawicki said the portraits of Roma and Sinti victims are among the few remaining documents of Mengele’s criminal experiments and should be treated as unique documents related to the history of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

“While fully respecting the rights of people who created some of the documents here, we are of the opinion that any loss in the collections of the Memorial will constitute irreparable harm,” he said. “… The loss of even the smallest part of the documentation is an irreparable loss and blemish on the memory of the victims of Auschwitz.”

Early summer 1994. I rise early, do a hard workout, go to the office. Roll calls for several hours, speak to fifty or sixty people about fifty or sixty problems, then look up and realize I’m spent. And famished.

I walk down the street to Kate Mantilini’s. I like their omelets.

The restaurant is on the corner of Doheny and Wilshire. One block east of there, I stop, wait for the light. Cars whipping by. I take note of how fast they’re going. Faster than usual.

Someone could really get hurt right here.

At the restaurant I sit by myself at a corner table, wolfing my omelet while reading a script. No dessert.

Half an hour later, head back to the office, thinking about a thousand things. At the same corner where I noted earlier how fast the cars were whipping by, I stop, wait for the light. When the WALK sign flashes, I step off the curb and turn my head just in time to see the front grille of a black pickup.

My body has been hit many times. As a wrestler I was slammed to the mat headfirst, back first, ass first. As a boy trapped in a small apartment with two violent psychopaths, a.k.a. my older brothers, I was thrown into bookcases, tables, doors. As a young man, I’ve been in bar fights, fistfights, street fights. I’ve been coldcocked, blindsided, bitch-slapped, smacked around. I’ve never felt anything like this truck hitting my knees.

Fender scooping me, flipping me like a big spatula, into the air.

As I fly, thoughts ricochet around my head. So this is what it’s like to fly. Landing isn’t going to be great.

A flood of feelings. Scared. Lonely. Inconvenienced. I have so much to do. The calls, how will I roll calls when I’m unconscious? Or dead?

Also feeling spurned. Like a jilted lover.

I loved you so much, Life. I’d have given my life for you! And this is how you do me?

But then the universe doesn’t spurn me. It embraces me. Violently. In the form of gravity. I land on the hood of the truck and roll onto the pavement. My body bounces once with a wet thud and comes to rest in the middle of the road.

Eyelids fluttering open. Did I lose consciousness? Must have. How long? Don’t know. Don’t care. Eyelids fluttering closed again.

All my parents’ stories had the same moral: Life’s a fight. And not just any fight. It’s some gladiator st, loser gets fed to lions. Save your white flags, your olive branches. Fk your doves. The world doesn’t care. Keep your fists clenched and your head on a swivel, unless you want to find yourself lying in the street bleeding out.

I’ve wasted my one precious life. I’ve let other people discourage me, stop me. I’ve let my own anxiety control me and lead me away from my purpose. I’ve accepted the delusion that there’s time, plenty of time.

It’s so clear now: Life is not a dress rehearsal. Everyone says this. Sooner or later, everyone in this town repeats this truism. But few act on it.

Lawsuit says Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI and Google made illegal deal on AI slowdown

    September 19, 2026 / 1:49 PM EDT / CBS/AP

A new lawsuit claims Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI and Google made an illegal deal to slow the pace of their respective AI development.

The lawsuit, which was filed Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, argues the leading AI companies violated antitrust laws when they agreed to coordinate slowdown efforts, and that doing so would reduce the value consumers get for paid AI subscriptions.

The coordination largely took place on Sept. 12, the lawsuit argues, when Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay urging for industrywide cooperation on decelerating advancements in favor of enhanced safety measures.

Amodei warned that swarms of rogue AI agents could take over the internet in as little as six months. He said AI companies should move forward more cautiously and slowly and with the development of the technology. Amodei then suggested a three-point plan in a blog post, which he said had the goal of “pacing the frontier.”

“I don’t think I fully just appreciated what it would actually be like when the progress was as fast as it was,” the CEO told CBS senior business and technology correspondent Jo Ling Kent in an interview on “CBS News Sunday Morning.

Amodei’s rivals — OpenAI’s Sam Altman, SpaceXAI’s Elon Musk and Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis — confirmed their agreement the same day, the lawsuit said.

“The antitrust laws do not permit competitors to decide among themselves that competition is too dangerous,” the plaintiffs argue.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. CBS News

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/802bd9ad-a197-40fa-b41a-50a5edc549a4

Lawyers representing four named plaintiffs, who pay for subscriptions to ChatGPT, Claude, Grok or Gemini, are bringing the suit on behalf of a proposed nationwide class of other paid subscribers to those services.

“AI will quickly spin out of human control and could kill us all if we allow AI safety and protocol … to be controlled by private self-serving agreements between the world’s most powerful ‘for profit’ technology companies,” said Nick Rowley, the lead attorney for the plaintiffs.

Representatives for Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and SpaceXAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment Saturday.

In his initial essay proposing the slowdown, Amodei acknowledged potential antitrust challenges, writing it would be helpful for the U.S. government to mediate “or at least enable” these cross-lab discussions. The government wouldn’t need to participate, he wrote, but would need to “issue a narrow waiver for certain kinds of safety conversations.”

“If we build in the right way, I think the probability of something bad happening is very low,” Amodei said during his interview with CBS News. “If we build in the wrong way, the probability of something bad happening is very high.”

LA homelessness fraud cases expose deeper problem than stolen millions, oversight hawk warns

    September 19, 2026 1:34pm EDT / Fox News

Rep. Michael Cloud says the system rewards spending and program activity without measuring whether people gain independence

    By Charles Creitz

Federal charges alleging that millions of dollars were siphoned from Los Angeles homelessness programs are exposing what one lawmaker told Fox News Digital is a deeper failure in the way Washington funds and measures such programs.

The latest cases out of Los Angeles fuel the concern of Rep. Michael Cloud, R-Texas that only are corrupt providers stealing taxpayer money, but that the programs aren’t meeting their goal of getting people off the streets.

“The only people really getting upward mobility in these programs, it would seem, is the people running the programs,” Cloud told Fox News Digital after a House Oversight hearing examining federally funded homelessness programs in Los Angeles, Seattle and elsewhere. “And that’s not really what the program’s supposed to be about.”

Federal prosecutors charged three defendants Wednesday in separate homelessness-fraud cases involving alleged misuse of taxpayer funds, including money allegedly spent on a nightclub and adjacent bingo hall and bribes allegedly tied to fake housing referrals.

Los Angeles’ homelessness agency paid one of the suspect nonprofits more than $75 million, according to federal prosecutors, leading Cloud to seek out the real culprits blazing the money trail.

WHITE HOUSE PUSHES ‘WATERSHED’ FRAUD-FIGHTING REFORM IN CONGRESS AS VANCE CONVENES TASK FORCE

Cloud said the fraud itself is only one piece of a broader problem, and that the system appears to reward spending and program activity without adequately measuring lasting outcomes.

Government too often judges success by “how much money we send out the door” instead of whether the spending is “actually helping people” or whether safeguards are in place to ensure taxpayer dollars are being used properly, Cloud said – describing the system as having been “incentivized for fraud.”

“We’ve got to take those incentives out and get back to making sure that all these programs have incentives for oversight and that the dollars are managed well,” Cloud said.

Some programs can keep a person “kind of in a cycle of dependency so that the program manager has job security, in a sense, and gets to live off the government dime,” Cloud said

“You [are seeing] as we begin to look into waste, fraud and abuse, why is it that these Democrat-led states are saying, no, we don’t want the controls in place,” he said, pointing to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’ decision to step down from the LAHSA commission.

Los Angeles is not alone, he said, citing what has been called the feds’ “Housing First” philosophy – generally prioritizing placing homeless in housing with less immediate regard for sobriety, mental-health treatment or overall stabilizing services.

WATCH: DR. OZ SAYS NEWSOM, OTHER BLUE STATES HAVE TURNED MEDICAID FRAUD INTO A ‘FEATURE’

Cloud did not use the term “Housing First” during the interview, but he described the concern behind that critique, arguing that some homelessness programs define success in ways that leave people dependent on government rather than moving toward independence.

Housing First is distinct from HUD’s “Continuum of Care” framework, which is the local funding and coordination structure through which nonprofit providers, state and local governments and other organizations receive federal homelessness money.

WALZ ADMINISTRATION IGNORED FRAUD WARNINGS AS BILLIONS VANISHED, HOUSE OVERSIGHT REPORT ALLEGES

In Los Angeles, LAHSA leads the local Continuum of Care, which HUD says received nearly $1 billion in taxpayer dollars over the previous five years.

Under Secretary Scott Turner, HUD moved to suspend LAHSA this year, citing alleged failures involving financial management, internal controls and safeguards against conflicts of interest. LAHSA has challenged the federal action in court.

“The ‘housing first’ experiment failed Americans by warehousing the vulnerable without results,” Turner said in June when HUD announced a $4.04 billion Continuum of Care funding opportunity.

That funding will focus on organizations aiding treatment and recovery, while setting aside $1.3 billion for new projects prioritizing transitional housing and supportive services and adding measures intended to prevent fraud, waste and abuse.

President Donald Trump said Saturday he plans to create an “AI Force” and name an AI czar as the government faces growing calls to impose guardrails on the rapid development of artificial intelligence.

The president, writing on Truth Social, repeated his assessment that fears over AI amount to a hoax and also seemed to acknowledge some of the risks the technology presents, saying, “we will also be looking for BAD, and we can do that, very easily, with our already existing Criminal and Civil Justice System.”

“For this purpose, I am forming the AI Force, much like I did Space Force, which has been a tremendous SUCCESS, in my First Term. To that end, I will be announcing, in the near future, the AI ‘Czar’ — Only High I.Q. individuals need apply!” Trump said in the post.

CNN has reached out to the White House for more details on the AI czar’s duties, whether the president has anyone in mind for the role, and whether the “AI Force” will be a branch of the military, like the Space Force. Trump’s creation of the Space Force in 2019 marked the first new US military service since 1947.

Trump’s announcement comes as the White House and Congress have faced pressure to enact AI safeguards in recent weeks. The president has downplayed concerns, claiming that a “SICK conspiracy” was afoot to undermine AI.

“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry,” Trump said in his post Saturday. “We are leading China, and the rest of the World, and I intend to keep it that way!”

Trump has made clear that he considers outpacing China and preserving AI-driven economic gains a higher priority than addressing growing public concerns. The issue has quickly come to dominate political debate in the United States, after industry leaders called for a global slowdown in development.

AI’s meteoric growth has led to major stock market gains and buoyed the manufacturing sector through the construction of data centers — which Trump calls “the golden goose.” Yet fears about the technology’s potential to eliminate jobs and AI data centers’ impact on communities have led to a souring in public sentiment.

Democrats have been more vocal in their calls to slow AI development, with former President Barack Obama urging potential Democratic presidential candidates to put AI at the center of their agendas in 2028.

“My view this week has been it is good that some of the leading companies have said we need to slow this down, and we should encourage that,” Obama said Friday during a fireside chat at Colgate University, according to excerpts of his speech obtained by CNN. “There have been some on the left who’ve said we shouldn’t allow them to make that decision. I agree that that can’t be a long-term solution. Government has to be regulating this.”

Venture capitalist David Sacks served as Trump’s AI and cryptocurrency czar until March, when he stepped down after reaching his time limit as a special government employee. He now chairs the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

This story has been updated with additional developments.

Trump says he will appoint a new AI adviser, without providing details

WASHINGTON, Sept 19 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said in a social media post on Saturday that he plans to appoint a new artificial intelligence adviser, known as an “AI czar,” and create an “AI force,” though he did not provide details about either initiative or how they would be implemented.

Fears are growing in Washington among lawmakers about the risks posed by AI technology on humans and property. Earlier this month, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon said that “people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.” Trump has repeatedly downplayed concerns about AI and argued that additional regulation is unnecessary.

“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social media platform. “Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows! However, we will also be looking for BAD, and we can do that, very easily, with our already existing Criminal and Civil Justice System.”

If Trump follows through on the pledge, it would be his second AI czar. Venture capitalist David Sacks previously served in the role before stepping down in the spring and moving into an external advisory position.

Sacks has echoed Trump’s skepticism of ‌new AI regulation. Speaking at a Politico event on Wednesday, he said AI developers should be responsible for ensuring the safety of their products and could be held liable if problems arise, adding that new federal rules are unnecessary.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump’s post.

Trump’s post comes ahead of his scheduled meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday. Washington and Beijing are competing for leadership in artificial intelligence, which both governments view as vital to their economic and military strength. Trump and technology executives have argued that excessive regulation would slow US AI development and undermine American companies’ ability to compete with Chinese rivals, a claim that safety advocates often refute.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will meet with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng on Sunday at JPMorgan Chase headquarters in New York to discuss AI security, trade and other economic issues, a person familiar with the planning said on Saturday.

‘It will never be the same’: How Trump turned on the Kennedy Center and brought it to its knees

    2026-09-19T16:00:29.096Z / CNN

When President Donald Trump’s name was ordered removed from the Kennedy Center this spring, it seemed that an opening to move on from his reign over the performing arts center might have emerged.

“I have instructed the Department of Commerce to make all necessary arrangements with Congress to allow a full and complete transfer of this Institution, giving them the responsibility for its Operation, Maintenance, and Management,” the president wrote in a late-May Truth Social post, seemingly relinquishing the control he’d seized a year prior.

Speculation even bubbled up among some of the more than a dozen“ex-officio,” board members — who don’t get a vote but are not allied with Trump — over whether the former board chairman, billionaire philanthropist David Rubenstein, could be brought back to help restore the center’s fundraising and programming, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN. (CNN has asked Rubenstein for comment.)

But after Trump said he would remain chairman, “it kind of all squelched pretty quickly,” one of the sources said. The hope that his crusade to rename a monument dedicated to the memory of John F. Kennedy had ended turned out to be wishful thinking.

Instead, nine months from a cold December day when cranes first placed Trump’s name on the marble façade, the institution has been brought to the brink by the president still very much engaged in a fight: lights have been turned off inside, infrastructure is crumbling and protests swirl while legal battles mount.

A lawsuit brought by Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio, an ex-officio board member, led to a judge’s ruling that Trump’s name had to be scraped off the building and that the board could not shut down the facility altogether.

Trump has only ratcheted up his threats to tear down the building in response to the legal setbacks: The president was seen with a poster this week through the window of Air Force One that appeared to read “Kennedy Center DEMOLISHED.” Though the federal judge has since ordered a 30-day notice be given before any major change happens, it’s not at all clear where things go from here.

Late Friday night, the administration argued in court that the Kennedy Center must close for two years, asking the federal judge in the case to allow it so that the “dangerously dilapidated and decrepit” building can be renovated.

On the same day, over a dozen Kennedy Center employees were laid off, including its lead spokesperson, according to two sources familiar with the matter — gutting an already skeleton staff. The Kennedy Center declined to comment on the cuts.

Trump has said previous leadership is to blame for the dire financial situation. During a contentious board call this week, he also blamed Beatty for bringing litigation that, he said, has contributed to the center’s downfall.

While the president and his allies on the board argue his name needs to be re-affixed to the building to revive fundraising, current and former officials, performers and industry officials say it is precisely Trump’s involvement that alienated the center’s donors and prompted scores of artists to cancel their performances.

“The Broadway productions will not come back, the artists will not come back,” said a source familiar with discussions about programming. “None of those donors will come back as long as Donald J Trump is the chairman.”

Current and former Kennedy Center officials, musicians, artists and other performers with ties to the center suggest that Trump’s takeover has added a permanent imprint on the Kennedy Center, whether or not his name ultimately ends up on the building.

“There are wonderful theaters throughout this country, and they are certainly part of the cultural ecology,” said LaRue Allen, president and executive director of the Martha Graham Dance Company, which has a 50-year history with the institution. “But the Kennedy Center — it is our nation’s capital. It is our national showcase.”

Another Kennedy Center source who recently left said simply: “It will never be the same.”

CNN has asked the White House for comment.

Trump’s focus on the Kennedy Center is emblematic of a notable shift from his first administration to a second one that has targeted arts, cultural and educational pillars across the country, in addition to Trump’s unrelenting desire to remake the nation’s capital to his liking.

In his first term, Trump mostly avoided the venue, skipping the Kennedy Center Honors after awardees threatened to boycott the event if he attended. The White House even said in a 2017 statement that the president and First Lady Melania Trump were not participating “to allow the honorees to celebrate without any political distraction.”

And when the Kennedy Center initially received $25 million in funding in a March 2020 Covid stimulus package, Trump defended the aid, saying: “The Kennedy Center, they do a beautiful job, an incredible job.”

Nine months later, however, he singled out a $40 million line-item for the center while criticizing a subsequent December 2020 Covid aid bill — a foreshadowing of his future disaffection.

By his 2024 campaign, Trump made clear that going after so-called “wokeism” would be a pillar of a second presidency. He didn’t appear to single out the Kennedy Center on the campaign trail, but in his third week in office he’d already set a takeover plan in motion.

“At my direction, we are going to make the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., GREAT AGAIN,”Trump wrote on Truth Social in February 2025.

Trump said he had fired Rubenstein as chairman of the board as well as board trustees “who do not share our Vision for a Golden Age in Arts and Culture.”

The takeover became the first domino in a cascade of Trump moves to remake the nation’s capital, including the demolition of the East Wing of the White House, the closure and remodeling of the busiest public golf course in Washington, DC, and his ongoing efforts to build a 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery — projects all still being fought over in court.

Though Trump has widely criticized cultural institutions and museums, he’s been able to exert only so much control over them, primarily by reducing their federal funding. The federal government has gutted the agencies that fund the arts, including the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities, and denied and rescinded tens of millions of dollars in grants to organizations that don’t align with the president’s values.

But the Kennedy Center is one of the few cultural institutions where the president has been able to flex more of his power by seizing control of the board. He has similarly tried to bring the federally funded Smithsonian Institution to heel, with more uneven results.

A week after Trump’s board takeover, the president was named as its chairman, and he installed longtime loyalist Richard Grenell as executive director.

“So we took over the Kennedy Center,” Trump told reporters. “I’m going to be chairman of it, and we’re going to make sure that it’s good and it’s not going to be woke. There’s no more woke in this country.”

His new role prompted several cancellations, including most notably the Broadway show “Hamilton.”

Leading up to the center’s Kennedy Center Honors in December 2025, which Trump himself was hosting, the president began referring to the building as the “Trump Kennedy Center.”

On December 18, 2025, the board made that declaration official by voting to rename the facility the “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts,” saying that the change honored Trump’s work at the center after taking over.

One day later, new signage was installed to add Trump’s name to the building’s façade.

    A legal and financial saga

The legal battle and wave of cancellations that has ensued present particular challenges for an institution that makes part of its budget from ticket sales.

Operating as a non-profit, the Kennedy Center received roughly $37 million from Congress in the last fiscal year, according to the latest appropriations legislation signed into law. But the bulk of its revenue comes from programming and private donations. In fiscal year 2024, during the Biden administration, the Kennedy Center reported $307 million in revenues, according to documents filed with the IRS.

Last year, Grenell sought to revamp the center’s calendar to include, in his words, more family-friendly programming. He brought in “Dog Man: The Musical,” based on the popular kids’ graphic novel series, at the recommendation of second lady Usha Vance.

At the same time, the center became a place to host events that lean in to Trumpian ties, including the premiere of the documentary “Melania,” a Charlie Kirk memorial and the FIFA World Cup draw (where the organization gave Trump a peace prize).

But after Trump’s name was added to the building, a wave of performers pulled out, and ticket sales sagged.Multiple sources told CNN earlier this year that attendance at the Kennedy Center had been so low that for months it had to “paper the house” — a theater term that means to fill seats by offering free or discounted tickets.

“There was a haze of despair around the performances. Nobody was showing up to performances,” Carlos Simon, the Kennedy Center composer-in-residence since 2021, told CNN.

Simon, who is in the last year of his residence, noted that the National Symphony Orchestra is now playing at other venues in Washington. He said he’s stayed in his role at the Kennedy Center “for the morale of the folks who were still there trying to do the good work of presenting music.”

“I feel really bad that it’s become this political tool or pawn, but music still has to go on,” he said.

Amid the cancellations, Trump announced in February that the Kennedy Center would close for two years on July 4 to allow for renovations — a move critics suspected was to being made more to provide cover for the shrinking pool of patrons than because of the need for such a dramatic closure.

The Kennedy Center also received an influx of funding last year thanks to Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which contained $257 million for the center to pursue “necessary expenses for capital repair, restoration, maintenance backlog, and security structures.”

Yet the board has argued only Trump’s help can muster the funds to renovate the building — and Trump has made clear his help will only come with naming rights.

In the meantime, Matt Floca, Grenell’s successor as executive director, this week told the judge in the Beatty case that the center needs to temporarily close due to safety concerns.

Even if the building survives, officials say getting the center’s programming to return — particularly Broadway shows — would still take months if not several years.

That is under the assumption, of course, that performances would be willing to return, said the source involved in the center’s programming.

“If we started now in terms of engaging with property companies, going back and forth and getting a deal made, we could have Broadway tours back at the Kennedy Center by the basically middle of ‘27 into ’28,” the source said. “That’s how long it takes for all these pieces to be put in place.”
