US inflation remains sticky in July; second-quarter GDP growth unrevised at 1.5%

    2026-08-26T12:47:52.631Z / Reuters

    • Monthly PCE rises 0.2% in July after 0.1% decline in June
    • Annual PCE inflation unexpectedly held steady
    • Fed funds futures imply 42% chance of September rate hike after report
    • Second-quarter consumer spending growth is revised up to 3.4% from 3.2%

Aug 26 (Reuters) – Annual U.S. inflation unexpectedly held steady in July well above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target for the 65th straight month, and the pause in the decline from a recent war-induced peak is ‌likely to intensify the central bank’s debate over whether interest rates should be lifted or held steady.

The Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index increased 3.7% in the 12 months through July, unchanged from June, the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis said on Wednesday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast a reading for PCE, which the Fed uses to set its target, of 3.6%.

The Reuters Daily Briefing newsletter provides all the news you need to start your day. Sign up here.

The month-over-month figure also came in higher than expected at 0.2% in July after falling 0.1% in June, which had been the weakest reading since April 2020. Economists had forecast a 0.1% increase.

Excluding energy and food prices, so-called core PCE — which Fed officials use as a guidepost for inflation’s underlying run rate — held steady at 3.3% on the year while rising to 0.2% on the month from 0.1% in June.

The above-forecast headline print gave a modest lift to expectations that the Fed may raise interest rates as soon as next month. Fed funds futures prices reflected about a 42% probability of a rate hike at the central bank’s September 15-16 meeting after the report, versus about 36% immediately before.

“This is data that supports a hike,” said Omair Sharif, founder and president of forecasting firm Inflation Insights. “The unrounded core PCE was 0.246%, so it barely missed out on rounding to 0.3%. That is a one-month annualized rate (of) nearly 3.0%.”

WAR AND TARIFFS CLOUD INFLATION OUTLOOK

Annual PCE shot to a three-year high of 4.1% in May in rapid fashion after President Donald Trump launched air strikes along with Israel against Iran in late February, sending energy prices spiraling upward as the conflict shut in roughly a fifth of global oil supplies.

Six months later the conflict appears no closer to a final resolution, though the exchange of fire has diminished and oil prices and the ‌wider inflation wave they instigated have retreated from their mid-spring highs.

The slowdown in inflation in the last two months has helped buoy the arguments of the majority of Fed policy committee members who voted last month to leave the central bank’s benchmark interest rate unchanged in the 3.50%-3.75% range, where it has been since December. But the sluggish pace of improvement is unlikely to mollify a growing minority of Fed officials who argue tighter policy is needed, given that inflation has been above target since February 2021 and will not get to the 2% level without further restraint.

Inflation as measured by PCE peaked at 7.2% in June 2022, and the steepest Fed rate increases since the 1980s helped put it on a path back toward 2%. That trajectory changed last year after Trump unleashed a wave of import tariffs upon his return to the White House, sending a wide range of goods prices higher, with the Iran war exacerbating those pressures.

And new tariff-induced pressures are likely coming, after trade negotiations between the U.S. and its second-largest trading partner, Canada, fell apart on Friday, resulting in new levies on $20 billion of Canadian imports to go into effect. Since then, Washington and Ottawa have each announced additional retaliatory measures to go into effect in coming months unless a deal is reached to avert them.

The BEA on Wednesday also updated data for economic growth for the second quarter, leaving unchanged its estimate of annualized gross domestic product growth at 1.5%. Among the notable changes from the first estimate was an upward revision to consumer spending during the April-through-June period to 3.4% from the originally reported 3.2%, an indication that the individual consumption that supports two-thirds of U.S. economic activity had held up through the first half of the year.

Meta settles social media addiction suit with states for up to $17 billion

    August 26, 2026 / 11:42 AM EDT / CBS News

Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, settled a landmark social media addiction lawsuit on Wednesday brought by dozens of states, according to a court filing.

Meta agreed to pay up to $17 billion to the states that sued and add child-safety measures to its platforms. The settlement resolves claims filed by 47 states and cuts short a trial that kicked off last week in Oakland, California.

California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey were among the 29 states that first filed suit against Meta in 2023, alleging that the technology giant used its social media platforms to “entice, engage and ultimately ensnare” young internet users. States accused Meta of deliberately designing its platforms to be addictive and of misleading users and the public about the risks.

Meta also violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by collecting and using the personal data of residents under 13, the states alleged. Meta denied the claims.

In a statement on Wednesday, Meta called the settlement an important step and encouraged other social media players to implement safety measures to protect youth.

“We just announced an agreement with a bipartisan group of 52 Attorneys General across U.S. states, territories and the District of Columbia to set a new industry standard, building on our longstanding efforts to empower parents and support teens,” a Meta spokesperson said in an email. “While this is an important step, these protections will only be truly effective if our peers-TikTok and YouTube-put the same measures in place.”

The $17 billion settlement, which remains subject to court approval, amounts to a fraction of Meta’s 2025 revenue of $201 billion.

    Will new safeguards help?

Meta will put in place new child safety measures under the settlement, including a two-hour daily time limit for teens; a restriction barring minors from accessing Facebook and Instagram at night; and muted push notifications during school hours.

Meta will also enact changes to better verify the ages of its users who are under 18 and implement stronger, more user-friendly parental controls and limits on social-comparison features, such as “like” counts.

Rob Bonta, the attorney general of California, where Meta is based, said the settlement will force the company to overhaul its approach to designing and operating social media.

“Meta has agreed to make massive transformations that will reduce the risk of harm from its platforms — and will do it within months,” he said in a statement. “We are talking about time limits, stopping notifications during school, a block on the app during critical overnight hours, bans on plastic surgery filters, and so much more.”

As tech companies have faced growing pressure about the impact of social media in recent years, Meta has added a number of safety features to Instagram, including separate accounts for teenagers with stronger protections around messaging and privacy, along with content restrictions.

But some child safety experts and former Meta employees contend that such features are largely ineffective.

Arturo Béjar, a former Meta engineering director, said during his testimony in the trial last week that the company designed its social media platforms to keep people engaged even if it harmed their mental health.

“If you step away from the product, they are not going to make any money,” he said.

The financial settlement will help states provide mental health services for young people and educate the public on the potential harm of social media, according to New York Attorney General Letitia James.

“With significant new resources for our communities and comprehensive restrictions on Meta’s platforms for young people, we are taking a major step towards breaking the cycle of social media addiction,” she said in a statement.

    • Meta

    Meta

    • Settlement averts California federal trial over claims from 29 states
    • Meta denies wrongdoing in settling claims

Aug 26 (Reuters) – Meta Platforms META.O agreed to pay a maximum $16.68 billion and make major changes to Facebook and Instagram to resolve claims by states across the U.S. that the company designed those platforms to addict children, ‌misled consumers about their safety and improperly collected children’s personal data.

The settlement resolves claims brought by 29 U.S. states, and will end a federal trial that had been one of the highest-profile tests yet of allegations that social media companies harmed young users.

Meta will impose daily usage limits and restrict nighttime usage by children who use Facebook and Instagram, and enhance measures to prevent children from accessing age-restricted content.

The Menlo Park, California-based company denied wrongdoing in agreeing to settle.

Wednesday’s settlement also resolves lawsuits by California, Illinois, New Mexico and Washington, D.C., over privacy claims related to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where the consulting firm collected personal data of millions of Facebook users. Those states will receive $459.3 million to resolve those lawsuits.

Shares of Meta rose 2.3% in early trading.

The claims were part of a broader wave of litigation brought by states, local governments, school districts and individuals alleging that Meta and other social media companies fueled a nationwide youth mental health crisis.

The trial in the Oakland, California, federal court covered claims from California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey that Meta violated their state laws protecting consumers.

It also covered claims from 29 states that Meta violated the federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act by collecting personal data from users it knew were children without parental notification or consent, and using the data to train machine learning and generative AI models.

Meta has long argued it could not have misled consumers about whether ‌its services were addictive because “social media addiction” is not a recognized psychiatric condition.

Before the trial began on August 18, Meta said California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey were seeking up to $1.4 trillion in penalties. The states suggested that the figure would be closer to $200 billion.

    A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS

Meta, Snapchat and its parent Snap SNAP.N, YouTube and its parent Alphabet GOOGL.O, and TikTok and its parent ByteDance still face thousands of lawsuits in federal and state courts over claims they knowingly designed their platforms to have features that addict children and teenagers, fueling a mental health crisis. A trial in Nashville over claims brought by Tennessee against Meta began last month.

The federal cases were consolidated before U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland, and include lawsuits brought by individuals, school districts and state governments.

Earlier this year, Meta lost both phases of a landmark lawsuit brought by New Mexico. A jury in March ordered it to pay $375 million after finding it had misled consumers about the safety of its platforms. On August 6, a judge found Meta had created a public nuisance and ordered it to pay an additional $567 million and implement youth-safety measures.

Also in March, the first trial over an individual’s claims against Meta and Google ended with a verdict in the plaintiff’s favor. A Los Angeles jury found the companies liable for plaintiff Kaley G.M.’s depression and anxiety and ordered them to pay a combined $6 million in damages.

The companies have said they will appeal those verdicts.
