    image

    image

    image

A grandfather struggled with treatment for late-stage pancreatic cancer — until a clinical trial helped him beat the odds

    July 25, 2026 / 8:05 AM EDT / CBS News

Hernando Salcedo was surprised when he noticed his stomach swelling in May 2025. The 83-year-old grandfather had always been healthy and active. He’d had some hip pain recently, but thought it was his age. The swelling came out of nowhere and didn’t have a clear cause.

He visited his doctor, but an endoscopic ultrasound wasn’t able to identify the cause of his pain and swelling. He was referred to a gastroenterologist, who ordered an MRI. Two days later, he received a devastating diagnosis: Stage III pancreatic cancer.

“It was very hard” to hear that diagnosis, Salcedo told CBS News. Most Stage III pancreatic cancer patients survive just months after being diagnosed, with a five-year survival rate of just 15%, according to the American Cancer Society. Surgery can be effective in removing the cancer, but Salcedo wasn’t a candidate for such a procedure. The only available treatment option was aggressive chemotherapy aimed at extending his life, not curing the cancer.

He began chemotherapy at the Miami Cancer Institute in July 2025, only to quickly suffer severe side effects. He couldn’t eat and lost weight. His son Mauricio said his father went from someone who would walk 2 or 3 miles every morning to a man who could barely leave the house.

“I’ve never seen my dad in bed for that amount of time, where he can’t even get up,” Mauricio said.

Salcedo was in pain and often felt worse than he had before his diagnosis. Previously, he was uncomfortable. But now he was barely able to function.

    “The easiest decision”

While Salcedo was struggling through chemotherapy, his case was presented to an expert panel at Miami Cancer Institute. These panels allow for discussion of innovative treatments, including clinical trials, said Dr. Ripal Gandhi, the radiologist and oncologist who treated Salcedo.

The panel determined Salcedo was a candidate for a clinical trial that was testing a new chemotherapy delivery device from medical company RenovoRX. Typically, chemo is administered intravenously, spreading through the whole body. But “pancreatic cancer has dense tissue, and there’s not a lot of blood supply to it, and therefore a lot of the chemo doesn’t get” to the actual tumor with this method, Gandhi explained.

RenovoRX’s RenovoCath system, which was first cleared for use by the FDA in 2014, aims to deliver the chemotherapy more precisely. A catheter with two balloons is placed in the artery nearest the tumor. The catheter is used to deliver chemotherapy as close as possible to the tumor, while the balloons isolate its blood flow.

Previous research showed the system reduced side effects for patients. Clinical trial data presented at the World Congress of GI Cancer Patients in 2023 showed 65% fewer adverse effects for patients treated with the catheter method versus those who received traditional chemotherapy, Gandhi said. Participants who received the chemotherapy via catheter also saw a six-month increase in survival, Gandhi said.

“Because you’re isolating the chemotherapy, there is very little drug which is actually going through the body,” Gandhi explained. “The drug is really being localized to the site of the cancer and there’s very little chemotherapy that’s making it to all the rest of your organs.”

When the trial was presented to Salcedo, he didn’t hesitate to say yes. Mauricio called it “the easiest decision” of his father’s cancer journey.

    “This treatment fixed my life”

Trial participants receive standard chemotherapy for two months, followed by radiation and an additional chemotherapy session. After those cycles, imaging showed Salcedo’s cancer hadn’t progressed. That meant he was finally eligible for the catheter delivery method. Salcedo and other trial patients were randomized, with some receiving the standard chemotherapy and some trying the new system.

Salcedo was among those who received the chemotherapy with RenovoCath, Gandhi said. He underwent treatment every other week for the next four months.

It was like night and day from his experience with traditional chemotherapy, Salcedo said. He “felt fine the next day” after receiving each treatment, he said. “I didn’t feel nausea. I didn’t feel pain. I didn’t feel nothing. This treatment fixed my life.”

Salcedo wasn’t the only trial patient to feel better. One patient of Gandhi’s survived four years after her diagnosis, which he said is “really unheard of in this disease.”

“Generally, Stage III pancreatic cancer is not something we can cure,” Gandhi said. “But our goal [for Salcedo] is that we want to increase life expectancy, while maintaining his quality of life. And I could say confidently we did maintain his quality of life.”

The device has been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration, a RenovoRX spokesperson said. More research is ongoing, and the final trial data of the RenovoCath for Stage III pancreatic cancer is expected to be published in late 2027, the spokesperson said.

    “Like you won the lottery”

One year after his diagnosis, Salcedo has already beaten the odds. Gandhi said that his cancer has been stable since mid-April. It has not spread to other organs, which Gandhi and Salcedo’s other doctors are “very happy about.”

That extra time and increased quality of life have let Salcedo take part in family milestones, including traveling to Colombia for his nephew’s wedding. He danced the night away, he said, and “felt perfect.”

Hernando Salcedo, left, at his nephew’s wedding. Hernando Salcedo

Mauricio said that neither he nor his father is under any illusions: Salcedo is 83 years old, and Stage III pancreatic cancer has a poor prognosis. But these extra months have been a gift, Mauricio said. Salcedo has resumed his regular walks and is planning even more travel.

“We don’t know how long, but we know he’s gaining weight, his energy levels are back, his mind’s correct, and he’s thinking about the future,” Mauricio said. “What else do you want for an 83-year-old man, other than that he’s happy? That feels like you won the lottery.”

他否认了报道内容,但还是 stepped aside(此处保留原语境,译为“退出竞选”)。

BANGOR, Maine – Maine Democrats on Saturday quickly coronated Troy Jackson as their party’s Senate nominee — following this month’s spectacular implosion of ex-candidate Graham Platner — in the high-stakes Senate showdown with longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

Jackson, a former state Senate president, was elected in a landslide at the Maine Democratic Party’s nominating convention in Bangor. He was on a glide path to the nomination after winning the vast majority of the voting delegates chosen last weekend by Democrats in the northern New England state’s 16 counties.

Jackson’s top rivals in the race to replace Platner backed him after dropping out of the race the past few days, leaving only one long-shot candidate for delegates to also consider at the convention. He defeated Saundra Pelletier, a pharmaceutical company CEO, by a 566-5 margin in Saturday’s vote.

The Senate race in Maine, where Collins is the only GOP incumbent running for re-election in a state President Donald Trump lost in the 2024 election, is one of roughly a dozen midterm showdowns across the country that will determine if Republicans hold onto their slim majority or if the Democrats win back control of the chamber.

WHO’S UP AND WHO’S DOWN: CHECK OUT THE FOX NEWS POWER RANKINGS ON THE MIDTERM ELECTIONS

“Are you ready to defeat Susan Collins? Well, then let’s unite this party. Let’s build the largest working class movement Maine has ever seen. And let’s win this fight,” Jackson, a fifth-generation logger from the remote northern tip of Maine and a one-time conservative Republican who became a Democrat over two decades ago, said in convention speech just ahead of the delegate vote.

While Jackson quickly raised over $1 million for his burgeoning Senate campaign and coalesced party support, there are some potential warning signs.

Following reports this past week digging into Jackson’s alleged temper and workplace conduct, reported claims of mortgage improprieties as well as other potential liabilities including his past strict anti-abortion stance, there are concerns by some in the party that following the Platner implosion, Democrats have landed another unvetted nominee.

“This is a bit of a rocket vetting process,” a Democratic strategist who works on Senate races, who asked to remain anonymous to speak more freely, told Fox News Digital. “Maine Democrats have seemingly made their choice and they’re just going to have to ride with it.”

A veteran Democratic consultant who also asked for anonymity said that “it’s very clear that Democrats should not be looking to Maine to flip the Senate.”

“The good news is that we have upset opportunities in places like Texas, Iowa, and Alaska,” added the consultant, who works with centrist Democratic Senate candidates.

Platner, a military combat veteran and oyster farmer who was backed by progressive champion and Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont soon after he launched his bid last August, saw his campaign quickly catch fire. Two-term Democratic Gov. Janet Mills, who was heavily recruited by longtime Democratic Senate leader Sen. Chuck Schumer to run for the Senate, suspended her campaign this spring after trailing Platner in fundraising and in the polls.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT TROY JACKSON, WHO’S ABOUT TO REPLACE GRAHAM PLATNER AS THE DEMOCRATS’ SENATE NOMINEE

But even as Platner steamrolled the Democratic establishment and crushed the competition last month in Maine’s primary to capture the nomination, he had already been forced on defense in the wake of a slew of scandals.

Platner dropped out earlier this month, amid calls from top Democrats in Maine and across the country to immediately exit the race following an explosive report containing an allegation of rape from a woman he previously dated. Platner denied the report but stepped aside.

Jackson, who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, campaigned alongside Platner during the primary. And he quickly made the case that he was the best equipped candidate to grab the mantle of the progressive and populist movement that had backed Platner.

Similar to Platner, Jackson is running on a platform aimed at working-class voters. He backs raising taxes on billionaires, the universal healthcare system known as “Medicare-for-all,” abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and he opposes military aid to Israel at a time that Democrats are increasingly divided on support for America’s longtime Middle East ally.

Jackson, who also had Sanders’ support as he ran for governor, is currently backed in his Senate campaign by Our Revolution, the group born in 2016 out of Sanders’ first presidential campaign.

Rep. Ro Khanna of California, a leading progressive in the House and a potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender, was a top Platner backer. Khanna quickly moved his support to Jackson in this month’s sprint to succeed Platner.

And Jackson enjoys strong support from labor unions in Maine. The labor backing, along with support from Platner’s former allies, helped Jackson capture the overwhelming majority of county-selected delegates last weekend.

The 500 delegates chosen last weekend, along with 101 selected by the state party, voted in Saturday’s convention.

Republicans argued ahead of the convention that Democrats stacked the deck to back Jackson as Platner’s replacement.

“Maine voters have been shut out by the Democrat establishment with a rigged nominating process to crown Platner 2.0 without a single vote being cast,” Republican National Committee spokesperson Kristen Cianci charged in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Collins, as she runs for a sixth six-year term in the Senate, is facing a rough political climate for Republicans, amid GOP President Donald Trump’s underwater approval ratings, persistent inflation and what polls indicate is an unpopular war with Iran.

The senator, known as a moderate Republican who at times has voted against Trump, last month received bipartisan praise after reaching a milestone by casting her 10,000th consecutive Senate vote.

But Democrats are taking aim at Collins over her comments that she didn’t regret her 2018 vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, despite his crucial vote four years later to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion ruling.

And following the fatal shooting in Maine earlier this month involving federal immigration agents, Democrats heavily criticized the Senate Appropriations Committee chair for her support for ICE funding.

But Collins has a history of defeating the Democrats’ efforts to oust her from the Senate.

Six years ago, she trailed Democratic challenger Sara Gideon, the then-Maine House speaker, but the senator ended up winning re-election by nearly 9 points .

The Senate showdown in Maine is expected to be competitive, combustible, and expensive, with outside groups on both sides spending big bucks to run ads.

An 83-year-old man who failed to return from a hike inside the Grand Canyon National Park was safely rescued after an all-night search, Arizona officials said on social media Saturday.

The man, identified by the National Park Service as Gerald Guinn, of Utah, was hiking with another person at 12:30 p.m. on July 21, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office said. The two were hiking in a “remote location” on the edge of the Kaibab National Forest. They split up to search for a nearby historic object, but Guinn never reunited with the other hiker.

A photo of Gerald Guinn shared by the National Park Service. National Park Service

The other hiker searched for several hours, then requested help. The sheriff’s office Search and Rescue team conducted an overnight search, using drones and search dogs, to no avail.

The next morning, the Grand Canyon National Park Service took over the search efforts, according to the sheriff’s office, adding a helicopter and ground teams to the search. The Kane County search and rescue team rejoined the search that afternoon.

In the early afternoon, the NPS received a cell phone ping indicating Guinn’s general location. The ping moved the search to the east. An NPS helicopter located Guinn, who was well enough to wave to the pilot.

The helicopter could not land in the area due to the terrain, so a Kane County search and rescue team was sent to assess and stabilize Guinn. The team found him to be “in good spirits, just cold, and non-ambulatory.” The rescue team provided liquids and warm layers.

The Kane County team and a paramedic transported Guinn back to the road. It took about 20 people to move him, with team members carrying the man, clearing downed logs, and flagging hazards. Once at the road, Guinn was met by Kane County emergency medical services. He was examined, cleared and released. The operation was completed at 1:30 a.m., about a day and a half after the man first began his hike.

Wildfires in France and Spain force 267,000 to flee as crews continue to battle untamed blazes

    2026-07-25T08:31:00-0400 / CBS News

    Updated on: July 25, 2026 / 11:15 AM EDT / CBS/AFP

More than 267,000 people have been forced to flee parts of Western Europe on Saturday as out-of-control wildfires continued to rage in Spain and France.

Thick black ash coated roof terraces in the north of Madrid’s center, the Spanish capital, where 70,000 people were evacuated as residents were forced to keep their windows closed by the smell of throat-irritating smoke.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, visiting the fire zone near Madrid, said the priority was to “save lives” while warning that a “complex” fight lay ahead. His government declared a national emergency.

Fires have burned 130,000 hectares of forest already this year in Spain, up from an annual average of 100,000 hectares over the past decade, Sanchez said. He said more favorable weather on Saturday offered “a window of opportunity” for fire crews to bring the blazes under control.

“We are going to have some complex hours ahead because although the temperatures have gone down, we do not know exactly how the wind will develop, how strong it will be,” he said.

Jacqueline Villafranca, a 38-year-old originally from Peru who evacuated to Madrid on Friday with her husband and their two daughters, said when smoke filled her village of Navalagamella, “I thought everything was going to burn, the house and everything.”

“Here you can breathe normally — yesterday it was unbearable,” she said, sitting in a gymnasium-turned-shelter.

Among those who fled from a suburban town was audiovisual technician Luis, who had spent the afternoon helping evacuees from the village of Pelayos de la Presa when he received the order to evacuate.

“I cried at first because it’s where I grew up. But now, it’s more a feeling of anger and resignation, because there’s nothing we can do as long as we’re not allowed to go back and see what we’ll find there,” he told AFPTV.

The fires in Spain and France advanced quickly because of tinderbox conditions worsened by successive heat waves the two countries have experienced since May.

Scientists say global warming is increasing droughts and causing weather emergencies to become more extreme and more frequent. Europe is the fastest-warming continent due to climate change.

In France, nearly 242,000 acres have been ravaged by wildfires – which French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said was a “historic record” nearly 10 times the size of Paris. At least 197,000 people have been evacuated in France as a result of the wildfires, in what was “probably” the biggest peacetime evacuation the country has seen, Nunez said on Saturday.

The total area of land burned so far this year across EU countries is the second largest on record, according to satellite data from the European Forest Fire Information System.

The major fires in both countries have been burning for two or three days, exhausting the many hundreds of firefighters battling them around the clock.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu described the fires as unprecedented and said the Gironde blaze had become so strong that it was generating its own winds.

“Our priority is clear: protecting human lives,” he posted on social media, adding that evacuation orders “must be respected without delay.”

“We will take no risks when it comes to the safety of the French people,” he added.

French President Emmanuel Macron has deployed 1,000 soldiers to help firefighters near Bordeaux, and on Saturday his government ordered an A400M military transport aircraft to join the fleet of smaller planes already dousing flames.

The modified A400M, which can release 20 tons of fire retardant, is an experimental fit-out that has only just completed preparations and testing.

The head of the Paris fire brigade on Saturday told AFP that around 100 firefighters from the French capital were being deployed to help in the southwest, adding to 45 firefighters and six vehicles already sent there.

Spain and France have also requested, and received, help in the form of aircraft sent from other European countries.

Italy said two of its Canadair water-dumping firefighting planes were deployed to Spain. Spain’s Civil Protection Service said it was expecting the arrival Saturday of two others from Greece, to join aircraft from the Netherlands and Portugal already deployed in Spain.

France is expecting two water-bombers from Croatia as well as two other planes from Portugal and two heavy-lift Black Hawk helicopters from the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

“It’s quite impressive and even frightening,” Laurent Moretti, a resident in the town of Arès in France, told the Associated Press. “An evacuation on this scale has never happened before. All we really hope is that the firefighters can quickly get it under control.”

Dozens of French firefighters have been injured, authorities said, but no deaths were reported in either country.

Emergency shelters were set up in schools and gymnasiums in southwestern France for tourists and residents left wondering what they would return to.

“We had no one to put us up,” said Caroline Larrode, 49, who had fled her home in Saumos for a huge Bordeaux hangar housing people evacuated from the Arcachon Basin with her three cats.

Nuala Kelly, a 75-year-old Irish tourist, said she had never seen anything like this.

“Never, never, never, never, never, and I’ve travelled all over the world and been in all sorts of situations,” she told AFP at Bordeaux’s vast exhibition center now housing thousands of people.

The organizers of the Tour de France announced they would shorten Sunday’s final stage of the race due to the blazes.

“In a spirit of national solidarity with the areas and communities affected, it was decided to adapt the route for the final stage from Thoiry to Paris,” the organizers said in a statement.

At least 5,700 more people than usual died in France last month amid a historic heat wave, French health officials said earlier this week. That figure represented a sharp increase in the estimated death toll nationwide from June and early July’s record temperatures.

In Italy, thousands of emergency workers battled scores of fires in Sicily and in the Calabria region, where a local official said arsonists had started fires by tying rags soaked in flammable liquid to the tails of stray cats to spread the flames.
