House GOP leader launches Senate bid as Trump taps Markwayne Mullin for DHS

By Elizabeth Elkind, Alex Miller | Fox News

A member of House GOP leadership is jumping into the open race for a Senate seat likely being vacated by Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., after he was tapped to lead the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

House GOP Policy Committee Chairman Kevin Hern, R-Okla., is officially launching his campaign for the Senate on Wednesday with support from at least four Republicans in the upper chamber.

“The American dream is under threat by the radical left and RINO Republicans who oppose President Trump’s America First agenda and want to turn the United States into a third-world country,” he says in his campaign debut video.

“That’s why I’m running for U.S. Senate — to ensure President Trump has a loyal ally, a leader who stood by his side when RINOs turned their backs on him, who will fight against Democrat insanity, keep the southern border secure, deport dangerous illegal immigrants, stand with law enforcement, and deliver economic affordability.”

40+ HOUSE REPUBLICANS RALLY BEHIND MARKWAYNE MULLIN FOR DHS, CALL IT A ‘CRITICAL MOMENT’ FOR BORDER SECURITY

Hern, who grew up in poverty without indoor plumbing until his teenage years, found considerable wealth as a McDonald’s franchisee before coming to Congress in 2018.

He’s the first major Republican candidate to declare his intent to run for Mullin’s seat in November — and whoever wins the GOP primary in the deep-red Midwestern state is the likely favorite to win.

Mullin is expected to leave the Senate after being tapped by President Donald Trump to lead DHS following Kristi Noem’s firing. He’s facing a confirmation hearing later this month.

Traditionally, Senate vacancies are filled by the state’s governor to serve out the remainder of the previous senator’s term. That person is also usually the favorite to win the seat in the subsequent election cycle.

But in Oklahoma, the governor’s appointee must sign an affidavit swearing they will not run in the next election — which in this case is coming in November, with Mullin’s term ending at the end of 2026.

It’s not clear yet how crowded the GOP primary for Mullin’s open seat will get. Rep. Stephanie Bice, R-Okla., has previously said she is considering her own campaign but has not made any final decisions.

MULLIN PROMISES TO EARN DEM VOTES AS GOP COLLEAGUES POUNCE ON HIS SEAT

Hern, meanwhile, is already stacking his team with Trump operatives.

He’s recruited pollster Tony Fabrizio, who is closely aligned with the president, as his campaign’s senior advisor.

Fabrizio said in a statement that Hern is in a “strong position” to win the seat, citing his “record of support for President Trump’s agenda, the trust he has built with Oklahoma voters, and his experience in public service and in business.”

Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s, R-S.D., first goal is to get Mullin’s seat quickly filled. He is set to meet with Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, a common practice when an appointment needs to be made, this week, a source familiar told Fox News Digital.

It’s common practice for a governor to meet with the leader of the Senate to work on appointing a replacement, as is the case with Mullin, who is set to begin his confirmation process in the upper chamber next week.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt updates the media on a deadly tornado that ripped through Barnsdall, northeast Oklahoma, on May 7, 2024.(Brandon Bell/Getty Images)

Further down the line, Thune has no preference as to who would replace Mullin, who is currently a member of his leadership team.

“You know, obviously we want — we’re going to have to fill that seat for Markwayne here by the end of the month in the near term, and then the long-term issue will be decided by the voters of Oklahoma,” Thune said. “So whoever they decide to send us, we’ll be happy to receive.”

Still, Hern has already snatched up the endorsement of a handful of senators, including Sens. Jim Banks, R-Ind., Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., Rick Scott, R-Fla., and Ron Johnson, R-Wis.

Trump has given a deadline of March 31 for Mullin to take over and for Noem to get out, and he is expected to easily pass through the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Whether Mullin hits hurdles during a full confirmation vote remains an open question.

The GOP’s increasing blind eye to anti-Muslim bigotry

    Analysis by Aaron Blake
    PUBLISHED Mar 11, 2026, 3:15 PM ET

Over the past year, a trio of House Republicans have said “Muslims don’t belong in American society,” labeled Muslim congresswomen “terrorists,” expressed a preference for dogs over Muslims, told now-New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani to “go back to the Third World” because he ate rice with his hands, and said that Muslims “breed their way through our society.”

President Donald Trump, meanwhile, added to his increasingly xenophobic recent commentary two weeks ago by advocating for sending two Muslim congresswomen “back from where they came.”

In the past, Republicans have picked their spots when rebuking these kinds of comments.

But increasingly, it appears GOP leaders have largely given up policing them — at least publicly.

And they’ve largely given up even as some members of their party appear increasingly concerned about another form of bigotry taking hold on the political right: antisemitism.

The trio here — Reps. Randy Fine of Florida, Brandon Gill of Texas and Andy Ogles of Tennessee — have spoken in unvarnished and bigoted terms about Muslims.

The most recent entry is Ogles’ Monday post on X that “Muslims don’t belong in American society.”

In the two days since that post, GOP leaders have largely sought to avoid the issue publicly. Their reluctance to police it was perhaps most evident in the strained comments of two House leaders: Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Whip Tom Emmer.

“I’ve spoken to those members, and all members as I always do, about our tone and our message and what we say,” Johnson said when asked about the matter Tuesday. He added: “We respect everyone’s beliefs and their right to live out their beliefs and to speak freely about their beliefs, and have that conviction.”

But then the Louisiana Republican expounded at length about the dangers of Sharia law, which he claimed “animates this.”

“The language that people use — it’s different language than I would use, but I think that’s a serious issue,” he said.

“When you seek to come to a country and not assimilate, but to impose Sharia law — Sharia law is in conflict with the US Constitution — that is that conflict that people are talking about,” Johnson said. “It is not about people as Muslims; it’s about those who seek to impose a different belief system that is in direct conflict with the Constitution.”

But Ogles’ comments didn’t say anything about Sharia law; he called out all Muslims.

Republicans have for much of the 21st century raised the prospect of Muslim immigrants trying to implement Sharia law in the United States, but there is little evidence to back up their claims.

Emmer also strained mightily to avoid dealing with the breadth and implications of what Ogles said.

In comments to PBS NewsHour’s Lisa Desjardins, Emmer focused on criticizing people who he said declined to assimilate to American culture, who commit fraud and who believe in radical ideology.

After Desjardins pressed him repeatedly on Ogles’ claim, Emmer ultimately seemed to suggest some Muslims were “good people.”

“I think Muhammad Ali. I think (former NFL player and TV host) Ahmad Rashad,” Emmer eventually said, according to Politico. “I think we’ve got plenty of examples of good people.”

There were a few Republicans who expressed more direct opposition to Ogles’ post, as Desjardins reported. Rep. Carlos Giménez of Florida called it “inappropriate” and Rep. Gary Palmer of Alabama added, “I don’t agree with that.” And Trump administration official Richard Grenell told Ogles on X: “Stop attacking the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.”

But the prevailing message from the top of the GOP seemed to be that they were giving Ogles room.

And the lack of a rebuke appears to have left Ogles unbowed. He posted again late Tuesday, “Muslims are unable to assimilate; they all have to go back.”

It’s a replay of what happened less than a month ago when Fine posted, “If they force us to choose, the choice between dogs and Muslims is not a difficult one.”

(He said he was responding to a post from a pro-Palestinian activist about dogs being “unclean.” The activist said that post was a joke.)

As the New York Times’ Annie Karni and others noted, GOP leaders didn’t have much to say about that, either. (One notable exception on the right was Megyn Kelly, who called Fine’s post bigoted.)

A few days later, the Florida Republican introduced legislation called the “Protecting Puppies from Sharia Act.”

Perhaps the most telling recent example of this dynamic of GOP leaders giving a pass to anti-Muslim rhetoric, though, came after Trump’s State of the Union address.

After Reps. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota — the two congresswoman Fine has labeled “terrorists” — heckled Trump during his speech, the president posted on social media that “we should send them back from where they came — as fast as possible.” (He apparently meant sending them back to where they came from. Omar is from Somalia, but Tlaib was born in Detroit, and both are American citizens.)

When Trump made a similar “go back” comment in 2019 — apparently about Tlaib, Omar and other progressive women of color in Congress — it was a major scandal.

And it was met with huge rebukes, including from Republicans — some of whom even cast it as racist.

This time, Republicans have said basically nothing about it publicly — just as they’ve largely ignored Trump’s increasingly xenophobic comments about Somali immigrants.

“I don’t want them in our country,” he’s said. “Their country is no good for a reason. Their country stinks, and we don’t want them in our country.”

It’s often hard for Republicans to rebuke a president who so dominates their political movement. But not doing so risks emboldening others on the right to say similarly bigoted things, about Muslims or others.

And Republicans don’t seem to have a lot to say, even as these kinds of comments proliferate.

Trump administration asks Supreme Court to let it end deportation protections for 350,000 Haitians

    March 11, 2026 / 3:51 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Wednesday to clear the way for it to end temporary deportation protections for more than 350,000 Haitian immigrants.

The bid for emergency relief from the Justice Department is the latest arising out of the Department of Homeland Security’s efforts to end Temporary Protected Status for a host of countries, putting immigrants from those places at risk of deportation. The Supreme Court has so far allowed the Trump administration to roll back protections for Venezuelan migrants, and a request involving Syrian immigrants is awaiting action from the high court.

Haitians were first granted Temporary Protected Status in 2010 because of “extraordinary and temporary conditions” following a catastrophic earthquake that left more than 300,000 people dead and devastated the country.

In his first administration, President Trump moved to rescind the protections for Haiti, but the termination was caught up in a court fight and didn’t take effect because he left office.

But after Mr. Trump returned to the White House for a second term, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem took steps to end Haiti’s TPS designation, effective Feb. 3.

Noem determined the decision to end the protections “reflects a necessary and strategic vote of confidence in the new chapter Haiti is turning” and the president’s “foreign policy vision of a secure, sovereign and self-reliant Haiti.” While the secretary acknowledged that certain conditions in Haiti remained “concerning,” Noem said parts of the country were “suitable” to return to.

But in December, a group of five Haitian nationals challenged Noem’s termination of TPS and sought to block the move. A federal district court granted their request last month, finding in part that Noem’s decision to unwind the protections was likely motivated by racial animus.

“Kristi Noem has a First Amendment right to call immigrants killers, leeches, entitlement junkies, and any other inapt name she wants,” U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes wrote. “Secretary Noem, however, is constrained by both our Constitution and the Administrative Procedure Act to apply faithfully the facts to the law in implementing the TPS program. The record to-date shows she has yet to do that.”

The Justice Department appealed, and a divided three-judge panel on the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., declined to freeze the lower court’s decision.

In urging the Supreme Court to allow the Trump administration to rescind the deportation protections, Solicitor General D. John Sauer argued that the theory embraced by the lower court threatened to invalidate “virtually every immigration policy of the current administration.”

Lower courts, he said, “are again attempting to block major executive-branch policy initiatives in ways that inflict specific harms to the national interest and foreign relations, while crediting harms to respondents that inhere in the temporary nature of TPS.”

TPS was created by Congress in 1990 and provides temporary immigration protections for people from countries beset by armed conflicts, natural disasters or other “extraordinary and temporary” conditions that make it dangerous for deportees to return. Migrants from a country designated for TPS generally cannot be removed from the U.S. and are authorized to work for the length of the designation, which typically lasts up to 18 months and can be extended.

As part of his immigration agenda, Mr. Trump has moved to end TPS protections for immigrants from at least a dozen countries, including Afghanistan, Haiti, Nicaragua, Somalia and Yemen.

弗朗西斯·钟/Politico/AP/文件照片]

Homeland Security pushes for access to restricted federal database on child support, employment information for millions

The Department of Homeland Security is seeking to gain access to a trove of federal information that is intended to support the collection of child support payments but could potentially be used for immigration enforcement purposes, according to three sources familiar with the talks who describe the move as unprecedented.

The data — which includes both information on people who pay child support and employment information for a much wider universe of people — is stored within the Health and Human Services Department and is used to collect child support payments. The request has prompted concerns among current and former HHS officials over whether Homeland Security would use legally restricted information that has historically been legally restricted for the administration’s immigration crackdown — and, in turn, sow distrust in a critical program.

It’s only the latest in a series of attempts by the Trump administration to use data stored in various federal agencies to potentially find undocumented immigrants residing in the United States.

Last year, for example, the Internal Revenue Service began sharing sensitive taxpayer data with immigration authorities to assist the search for undocumented immigrants. A federal judge blocked that information sharing late last year, ruling that it violated taxpayer privacy laws, but the administration is appealing.

Sources told CNN that DHS has requested access to the Federal Parent Locator Service, which is a set of databases at HHS that includes sensitive information on millions of Americans for the purpose of child support payment collection. One of those databases is the National Directory of New Hires, which contains employment details even for people with no nexus to child support though their information is eventually wiped.

“For the (National Directory of New Hires), it’s a general population database of all US workers in the country whether or not they have anything to do with child support,” said Vicki Turetsky, who served as commissioner of HHS’ child support enforcement from 2009 to 2016. “All American workers would have their data exposed through the NDNH should DHS get ahold of it.”

While immigration status is not included in the data collection, it could be inferred by who does or doesn’t have a social security number. Undocumented immigrants can receive child support because it’s not a public benefit, nor paid by the taxpayer.

The White House referred CNN to DHS and HHS, which have not responded to requests for comment. ProPublica earlier reported on the request by DHS.

Multiple sources told CNN that the DHS request would likely be in violation of federal law, which explicitly states how the information is handled and who is authorized to do so. DHS is not an authorized user and immigration enforcement is not an authorized use, according to former HHS officials.

It’s unclear whether DHS will succeed in accessing the databases.

The IRS-ICE collaboration, meanwhile, was troubled from the start. ICE requested address information last year for nearly 1.3 million suspected undocumented immigrants but only got data from the IRS for about 47,000 taxpayers. And the IRS acknowledged in court last month that it made a mistake and shouldn’t have turned over data for approximately 2,000 of those taxpayers.

Last year, Democratic Sens. Ron Wyden and Sheldon Whitehouse also raised alarm over Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency attempting to access the national child support database, noting that it contains identifying information of Americans. It’s unclear whether DOGE ultimately accessed the data.

CNN’s Marshall Cohen contributed to this report.

A suspected retaliatory drone attack by pro-Iranian militias struck a major U.S. diplomatic facility in Baghdad on Tuesday, according to The Washington Post.

The newspaper said the strike hit the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center, and no injuries were immediately reported.

Six drones were launched toward the compound, five of which were shot down.

The Post, citing a security official and a State Department alert, reported one drone struck near a guard tower and people at the facility were instructed to “duck and cover.”

“Accountability is ongoing,” the alert said.

Iraq’s ministry of defense condemned the drone and missile attacks targeting the Martyr Muhammad Alaa Air Base and the Martyr Ali Fallah Air Base in a post on X but did not mention the hit on the U.S. facility or Iran directly.

“In response to these sinful aggressions, the Ministry wishes to clarify and confirm the following facts: These air bases are fully sovereign and Iraqi, subject entirely to the authority of the state and the law, and there is no representation of any foreign forces in them under any designation,” the government account wrote.

The security official told The Washington Post the attack was likely conducted by militias affiliated with the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a loose umbrella group of Iran-aligned Shiite armed factions that have claimed responsibility for attacks on U.S. forces in the region.

At the start of Operation Epic Fury, the State Department had urged Americans to depart immediately from more than a dozen countries across the Middle East, warning of “serious safety risks” as the Iran war intensified.

Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Mora Namdar said on March 2 that U.S. citizens should leave Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

The department said Americans who need help arranging departure via commercial means can contact the State Department 24/7 at +1-202-501-4444 from abroad or +1-888-407-4747 from the U.S. and Canada.

Officials warned conditions in the region remain volatile, and security situations could change quickly as fighting tied to the conflict continues.

At least nine U.S. missions, including Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar and Israel, issued repeated shelter-in-place directives or advisories at the outset of Iran’s retaliatory attacks against U.S. forces and Israel.

President Donald Trump took a bow Tuesday night for his 5-0 record for his endorsed candidates in the Republican elections held in Mississippi and Georgia.

“March 10th election update: 5 wins, 0 losses,” an election night image posted to Truth Social blared. “President Trump endorsements 100%.”

The image hailed a 4-0 record in Mississippi (Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss.; Reps. Mike Ezell, R-Miss.; Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss.; Rep. Trent Kelly, R-Miss.) and 1-0 in Georgia, albeit with a bullet.

“President Trump’s endorsed candidates keep winning because Republican voters trust his leadership and want America First champions in Congress,” RNC spokeswoman Emma Hall told Fox News Digital in a statement. “From cutting taxes to securing the border, every Republican candidate in the country is proudly running on President Trump’s record and competing for his endorsement because it remains the single most decisive factor in GOP primaries.”

In one of the marquee matchups, an all-party special election for an open House seat, Republican Clay Fuller earned an April 7 runoff against Democrat Shawn Harris for the seat vacated by former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., in Georgia’s “solid red” 14th Congressional District.

“Clay Fuller is going to be a fantastic Congressman in representing the Great State of Georgia,” Trump wrote Wednesday morning on Truth Social.

“Now we have to be careful and finish it off. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”

While Fuller did not earn the special election victory, and Harris won the most votes (37.3%) in a 17-candidate field that included nine Republicans, Harris only had to outdistance two Democrats. Fuller trailed Harris by only 3,000 votes at 34.9%. Republican Colton Moore finished third and out of the running at 11.6%, while no other candidate reached 5%.

“I think the Republican Party is going to unite around us because they know that the Democrat is too dangerous,” Fuller said Tuesday night. “We can’t have a Democrat representing Georgia 14. That would be a tragedy for our community, a tragedy for Georgia 14 and a tragedy for the MAGA movement.”

The total number of votes cast across all candidates in this election result thus far is 115,823, and Republicans outdistanced Democrat votes by nearly 20 points. GOP candidates garnered a total of 59.7%, while Democrats had 39.8% and independents had less than 1%.

“Congratulations to Clay Fuller, of Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, on getting such a high percentage of the vote with 12 Republicans running,” Trump wrote Tuesday night on Truth Social. “We want to make the next vote ‘TOO BIG TO RIG.’ Clay will be a GREAT Congressman — HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”

Fuller was a White House fellow in the first Trump administration and is a lieutenant colonel in the Georgia Air National Guard. He finished fourth in the 2020 Republican primary that Greene won. He credited Trump’s nod for propelling him to the runoff.

“They want to know who President Trump was endorsing in this race,” Fuller said. “And that’s why they came out in droves to support him, because they want an America First fighter on Capitol Hill fighting for his policies that are going to make a difference for our community.”

Harris said he is not worried about further Trump intervention.

“If Donald Trump wants to come and do what he wants to do, that’s his business,” he said.

The House GOP majority is a narrow 218-214 right now, making the Fuller-Harris April 7 runoff an important one for upcoming 2026 votes. There are two other vacancies awaiting special elections this year, including blue-state seats formerly held by New Jersey Democrat Gov. Mikie Sherrill, who resigned from the House in November, and the late Rep. Doug LaMalfa, R-Calif., who died Jan. 6.

Illinois is next up on the GOP primary schedule on Tuesday, March 17, when three Trump-endorsed candidates are incumbents: Reps. Mike Bost, R-Ill., Mary Miller, R-Ill., and Darin LaHood, R-Ill.

The next big GOP primary challenge forged by Trump is frequent MAGA foil Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., on May 19. Trump-backed Ed Gallrein is vying for that seat.

“I predict that ‘Representative’ Thomas Massie will go down as the WORST Republican Congressman in the long and fabled history of the United States Congress, even worse than Crazy Liz Chaney, Cryin’ Adam Kinzinger, and Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Brown (Remember, Green turns to Brown under stress!),” Trump wrote Wednesday morning on Truth Social.

“They are all misfits and losers, but Massie, who is running against a great American Patriot in the Kentucky Primary, will hopefully lose BIG. I LOVE KENTUCKY!!!”

    最佳男主角提名者(从左至右):蒂莫西·柴勒梅德(《Marty Supreme》)、莱昂纳多·迪卡普里奥(《One Battle After Another》)、伊桑·霍克(《Blue Moon》)、迈克尔·B·乔丹(《Sinners》)和瓦格纳·马拉(《The Secret Agent》)。

    https://youtu.be/8QsgMPVH-2I

    • 《Marty Supreme》

    莱昂纳多·迪卡普里奥,《One Battle After Another》

    https://youtu.be/oQNa-2f5z9E

    https://youtu.be/cK1pm6yRvFs

    • 《One Battle After Another》获得13项奥斯卡提名,包括最佳影片。

    理查德·罗杰斯(Richard Rodgers)和洛伦兹·哈特(Lorenz Hart)的作曲组合创作了《我的滑稽情人》(My Funny Valentine)、《淑女如 tramp》(The Lady Is a Tramp)和《蓝月亮》(Blue Moon)等许多美国经典金曲。

    https://youtu.be/NVjoJl2WTDI

    https://youtu.be/OagGEjNvJx0

    • 《Blue Moon》

    https://youtu.be/u20kIXIiqCk

    https://www.cbsnews.com/video/michael-b-jordan-on-sinners/

    • 《Sinners》

    https://youtu.be/JJJu9ff-_-Q

    https://youtu.be/7ZTl5unNYVg

    • 《The Secret Agent》

Behind the scenes with the best actor Oscar nominees at the 2026 Academy Awards

Watch scenes from the performances nominated for the Oscar for best actor, as well as interviews with the nominees below. The 98th Academy Awards will be presented Sunday, March 15.

Nominees for the best actor Oscar this year are, from left: Timothée Chalamet (“Marty Supreme”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“One Battle After Another”), Ethan Hawke (“Blue Moon”), Michael B. Jordan (“Sinners”), and Wagner Moura (“The Secret Agent”). A24; Warner Brothers; Sony Pictures Classics; Neon

    Timothée Chalamet, “Marty Supreme”

The character of shoe salesman Marty Mauser (loosely based on the life of table tennis player Marty Reisman) is a classic example of a striver willing to subvert norms or personal codes of honor in order to achieve their vision of success. In the world of “Marty Supreme,” that character’s goal is mastery of a sports subculture – and in 1950s New York, there was perhaps no sports subculture more “sub” than table tennis, which makes director Josh Safdie’s period film both pertinent and quaint.

Marty (played by Oscar-nominee Timothée Chalamet) clearly has the chops, but what he needs in order to compete at the table tennis world championships is money, and he is desperate to get it. It becomes the basis of his manipulations of those around him, from hustling drunks, holding a mob figure’s dog for ransom, and bedding the wife of a potential sponsor.

    https://youtu.be/8QsgMPVH-2I

Playing a striver was the attraction for Chalamet. “Knowing the grind as an actor and not being ignorant to it — my dream wasn’t a financial one like Marty Mauser’s, but it was also in pursuit of an ideal,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s this New York connection that I couldn’t even put into words and I’d fail trying to, but that’s just true to my spirit,” he said. “Having gone through a very similar struggle in New York and playing this guy’s struggle in New York, it was deeply resonant for me.”

Having first discussed the project with Safdie seven years ago, Chalamet decided to amp up his table tennis skills, practicing even as he was in production on other films. Yes, there was a ping pong table on the set of “Dune” The training was, he said, “somewhere between a marathon and a sprint — it’s really a tremendously athletic sport.”

In a Q&A with Ben Affleck at the American Cinematheque, Chalamet described the challenge of playing an often unlikable character – one who lies, cheats, and abandons friends and lovers, all while struggling for success in a sport few truly respected. One idea instilled by the director was for Chalamet not to be judgmental towards Marty, to take his point of view, as he was not limited by the strictures of playing a flawless hero or a horrible villain: “This guy’s messy and human and real. And I feel like we all know someone like Marty who’s equally at times, you know, inspiring, maybe believes in his dreams, as much as he is a scumbag, somebody who operates purely at self-interest.”

Chalamet is routinely reticent when discussing his work process. In a 2025 interview with “60 Minutes,” he said he wasn’t comfortable revealing the magic of his craft: “It’s nobody’s business how I go about these things. It’s within the law!” he laughed. “Otherwise, it might not be as interesting as people think. Or it could be a lot more interesting than people think. It might be more interesting than what I’m doing.”

At age 30, Chalamet became the youngest male to earn three best actor nominations (after “Call Me By Your Name” and “A Complete Unknown”), a title previously held by Marlon Brando.

    • “Marty Supreme” is nominated for nine Academy Awards, including best picture.

Leonardo DiCaprio, “One Battle After Another”

Loosely adapted from the 1990 Thomas Pynchon novel “Vineland,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” is an absurdist take on the revolutionary movements of the 1960s and ’70s, wrapped around the story of a father desperately trying to connect with his daughter. Add a martial arts sensei who operates an underground railroad for undocumented immigrants, a vengeful military officer, and a secret cabal of White supremacists, and you have one of the most brazen comic thrillers of recent years.

Oscar-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Bob, who has been hiding from authorities for 16 years under an alias in a mountain community in California. He still lives by the precepts of a revolutionary, but it’s been years, and he’s smoked a lot of weed, so when he tries to contact the central command of his former comrades, the password he needs to remember to get through to his brethren is elusive.

    https://youtu.be/oQNa-2f5z9E

Beyond his role as a lapsed revolutionary, Bob has a more important and immediate function, as a parent to Willa (Chase Infiniti). Inspired by Jeff Bridges’ performance in the Coen Brothers’ “The Big Lebowski,” DiCaprio spends much of the film disheveled, in a bathrobe, and drunk or stoned.

In a conversation at the British Film Institute, DiCaprio said his character developed much further once Infiniti was hired to play Willa, and the screenplay was workshopped. The tensions between father and daughter were accentuated, which only magnified a sense of role reversal between the two, underscoring Willa’s self-reliance and Bob’s lack of control.

One element was Bob’s paranoid prohibition against Willa having a cellphone. “I think Paul at one point maybe wanted to do some sort of hyper-realistic world where there were no phones, and she arrived, you know, basically saying, ‘Are you out of your mind? I’m going to have a phone. I don’t care if my father’s off the grid or if he’s paranoid, if he’s disconnected from reality, anti-government, I’m going to have that phone.’ And that became this kind of key moment that strung itself along in the movie and created moments of tension. …

“And a lot of those great workshops that we had, that tension arose between us of her almost playing the mother figure and me just desperately trying to connect with my daughter and doing it through anger and self-medicating myself with drugs. Those workshops, I think, were very key. When we landed on set, I think we were on firm footing of what that household dynamic was.”

That dynamic is evident in this scene, in which Bob fails completely as a parental role model:

    https://youtu.be/cK1pm6yRvFs

DiCaprio earned his eighth Academy Award nomination for “One Battle After Another.” (He’d previously won best actor for “The Revenant.”) Asked by Rolling Stone about his career, DiCaprio said that in the early years it felt like hitting the lottery: “It was very much like, ‘I can’t believe I’m working in this industry, and I’m getting to make decisions for myself.’ And there’s this frenetic pace that you have. But now, you know, I think as I’ve gotten older, I’ve just become even more … I don’t want to say selective, but all these different components have to come into play to make a movie and hope that it not only works but lasts, even if there are no guarantees of either of those things.”

    • “One Battle After Another” is nominated for 13 Academy Awards, including best picture.

    Ethan Hawke, “Blue Moon”

The composing duo of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart was responsible for many treasured classics in the Great American Songbook, from “My Funny Valentine,” to “The Lady Is a Tramp” and “Blue Moon.” But by the early 1940s, the partnership broke apart. Rodgers then teamed up with Oscar Hammerstein II, and their first collaboration would prove to be an enduring landmark of musical theater, “Oklahoma!” – a success greater than anything Rodgers and Hart had achieved.

Richard Linklater’s “Blue Moon” takes place on that show’s opening night, at a celebration being held in the famed Broadway watering hole Sardi’s, where Hart, a jumble of self-pity, jealousy, and ambition, horns his way in. As played by best actor nominee Ethan Hawke, Hart tries to ingratiate himself upon his former partner (Andrew Scott), but the room already reads Hart as a Tin Pan Alley dinosaur.

    https://youtu.be/NVjoJl2WTDI

Hart tries to lay on the charm with a woman he adores, Elizabeth (played by Margaret Qualley). Never mind that Hart was gay; he is besotted, and moribund to hear of her attraction to a man who mistreats her. What is love, he says, but “madness.”

    https://youtu.be/OagGEjNvJx0

Hawke has been Oscar-nominated twice before for supporting roles (in “Training Day” and “Boyhood”), as well as sharing screenwriting nominations for Linklater’s “Before Sunset” and “Before Midnight.” But the role of the lyricist was something of a stretch: The real Lorenz Hart was less than five feet tall, so Linklater used camera tricks to make the nearly six-foot actor look much shorter. Hawke also wore fake teeth, and shaved the top of his head to affect a real combover.

He also learned a mountain of dialogue, as he becomes an effusive charmer desperate to impress others. “It’s definitely the most text I’ve ever had in a movie,” Hawke told “Sunday Morning.” “I remember calling my wife after the first day – I think I had more lines than I had in the previous five films.”

Working off a screenplay by the nominated Robert Kaplow, the film’s production process took about a decade, during which Linklater and Hawke workshopped the script. According to the director, that also allowed the actor to age into the role. And with that aging came a weariness to reflect Hart’s sense of increased obsolescence as he witnesses Rodgers’ success. Hart would die of pneumonia later that year.

After the acclaim of “Training Day,” Hawke starred in more films, TV and on Broadway, but he says there was a time he passed on more parts than he took – and the offers started drying up. “When you’re young,” he told “Sunday Morning,” “You don’t realize that this is a young person’s game, and those kinds of job offers, there’s a shelf life on that.”

And when did that “shelf life” notion hit him? “Around the same time gray starts appearing in your beard,” he replied.

    Michael B. Jordan, “Sinners”

There have been several instances of actors being nominated for playing multiple characters in a film, from Charlie Chaplin in “The Great Dictator” and Peter Sellers in “Dr. Strangelove,” to Meryl Streep in “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” and Nicolas Cage in “Adaptation.” Lee Marvin actually won best actor for playing brothers in “Cat Ballou.”

For “Sinners,” Michael B. Jordan plays twins, Stack and Smoke, who open a backwoods juke joint in the segregated South. It appears at first to be a story about two ambitious men trying to make names for themselves under the cruel limitations of Jim Crow. But then the supernatural enters the picture, as vampires become an ever greater threat than the racist violence around them.

Jordan won the best actor award from the Screen Actors Guild.

He had first worked with director Ryan Coogler on 2013’s “Fruitvale Station,” and they teamed up again for “Creed,” “Black Panther,” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” When Coogler shared the idea of playing two different characters, Jordan told “Sunday Morning” his reaction was, “‘I’m a do what?’ I think it was a little bit of anxiety, I think. A little bit nerves. But then, equal amount of excitement.”

In an extended conversation with “Sunday Morning,” Jordan described his research into the roles:

“It started to run through my head: Okay, how are we going to do this? And I think that’s something that Ryan also knew was going to be good for me, which is a challenge and to kind of push me out of my comfort zone. This was the hardest thing that I’ve ever done to date. And it allowed me to imagine the best version of it, but then also the excitement of figuring out, okay, how do we problem solve? How are we going to get this done? What’s the technicality? How are we going to get into it? I had all these questions. I had all these ideas, and we just kind of took a pause, took a moment and really got back into the foundation of like, who are these brothers, you know? What are the dynamics of an identical twin?

“That’s such a unique specific relationship that only exists between identical twins,” he said. “I had an opportunity to talk to a lot of identical twins, and it was very informative and they’re kind of like celebrities in their own right, you know? Like, no matter what town you go to or wherever the twins are from, they’re known as the twins. … So, there’s a little bit of that celebrity, I guess, that comes along with being identical twins that we wanted to tap into in this movie as well.”

In this video from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, VFX supervisor Michael Ralla explains the techniques used to create multiple Michael B. Jordans – from split-screens that merge two filmed performances into a single shot, to using multiple cameras built into a halo rig to capture Jordan’s performance and then place his head onto the body of a stunt double. Ralla’s effects team, as well as cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw, were among the film’s record 16 Oscar nominations.

    Wagner Moura, “The Secret Agent”

Wagner Moura won best actor at the Cannes Film Festival for his performance in Kleber Mendonça Filho’s political thriller “The Secret Agent.” Set in Brazil in the late 1970s, a period of dictatorship (what the film ironically refers to as a time of “great mischief”), the story opens with a stranger, Marcelo (Moura), arriving at an apartment complex in Recife, which appears to be a haven for political refugees.

Like the other residents who are vague about their pasts, Marcelo easily slips into the fabric of life there, as easily as he slips into his job as a functionary at the government office responsible for issuing ID cards. We discover that, just as he is on a search for information, there are also men being paid handsomely to try to find him.

During an interview, Marcelo goes off the record about his capacity for violence towards the man he blames for his plight.

Moura, who played drug lord Pablo Escobar in “Narcos,” had not starred in a Brazilian film in a decade. (He directed 2018’s “Marighella,” about a guerrilla fighter.)

He told Vanity Fair that “The Secret Agent,” which takes place around the time of his birth, is like a memory piece: “A lot of [the film] connects you to something where, even if you didn’t live it, you feel it,” he said. “My mind worked in that sense: I thought about the photos of my father. I have this video of my parents’ wedding, and it’s in that part of the country.”

“I love the Ibsen play called ‘An Enemy of the People,’ and I always think about that play when I think about ‘The Secret Agent’: Someone is punished for doing the right thing. It feels a little naïve, but it’s what happens when values are upside-down. … This film is a lot about how the values of a government can shape the minds of people in general – but the ones that are not in conformity with that idea really pay a price. I think here, Kleber is talking about himself and that specific time when we all lived in Brazil under Bolsonaro. We all paid a big price by not obeying or not agreeing with what was going on.”

At a Cannes Film Festival press conference last May, Moura, who had shot “Marighella” when Bolsonaro ruled, described the attitude of the filmmakers making “The Secret Agent”: “In a dystopia, you have to try to hold on to something, uphold the values of dignity, remain an upstanding person. A dictatorship is very difficult indeed because you’re under threat of death basically, and the threat concerns your values as well. You’re being threatened by the powers that be. And if you group together, I think that’s what’s most wonderful in times like that. Not only when there’s a dystopia but even in happy good times. It’s lucky we can set up groups of people in this manner when there is a dystopian period of time in a very authoritarian regime. …

“The film focuses a lot on values. Values that come from the powers that be are twisted, and most people seem to align with these values. It’s hard to remain who you are. It’s hard to remain loyal and faithful to the person you actually are. There are societies and countries where similar situations have occurred. In Brazil, to be gay, Black or a native Brazilian, life may become very complicated. So politically speaking, these are real issues we wanted to talk about.”

Spoiler alert: Like Michael B. Jordan, Moura plays two characters in the film. (But we won’t tell you who the other one is.)

    • “The Secret Agent” is nominated for four Academy Awards, including best picture.
