DoorDash reaches $131.5 million settlement with NYC over delivery workers’ pay

NEW YORK, Sept 22 (Reuters) – DoorDash (DASH.O) said on Tuesday it reached a $131.5 million settlement of a New York City ​government probe that found the food delivery company ‌underpaid or waited too long to pay workers.

The settlement with the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection includes a $16.7 million fine, ​and more than $83 million to resolve a dispute ​over how to calculate pay for workers who ⁠were logged into the app and on-call but ​not actually making deliveries, DoorDash said.

DoorDash said it would ​also provide additional worker remedies, including $12.3 million for payments that were missed or arrived days or weeks late.

“Simply put, we screwed ​up,” the San Francisco-based company said in a statement. “Our ​mistakes meant some Dashers were underpaid or paid late. While these ‌mistakes ⁠weren’t intentional, that doesn’t make them okay.”

DoorDash said many errors resulted from deliveries that crossed city boundaries, had multiple pickup or drop-off locations, or were only ​partially fulfilled or ​canceled. It ⁠said other errors resulted from technical bugs, or having incomplete banking information for workers.

The ​company said it has fixed technical issues ​that ⁠caused the mistakes.

DoorDash and delivery app rivals including Grubhub and Uber Eats (UBER.N) have had multiple legal battles with ⁠New ​York City, including challenges to its ​tipping laws and whether they must share customers’ data with restaurants.

Trump to address U.N. General Assembly and meet with world leaders as he navigates Iran, Gaza, Ukraine conflicts

Washington— President Trump will address the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday morning and meet with other world leaders as he makes the case for his handling of the war with Iran and other foreign endeavors.

The speech comes as the Trump administration navigates several international conflicts — and expresses frustration with some U.S. allies. The war with Iran will hit the seven-month mark next week. The president is also seeking to close a peace plan for the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas, and has struggled to bring Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to an end.

Mr. Trump will visit the U.N. immediately before welcoming Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House on Wednesday, as the U.S. president praises Xi in spite of questions about Chinese entities assisting Iran and buying Russian oil.

Mike Waltz, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, told reporters the president’s speech will focus on “how he has, and his administration have, confronted complex problems head-on around the world” when past administrations “kicked the can” down the road. Waltz said the president will talk about ensuring that Iran won’t have a nuclear weapon, and will give an update on progress on the Gaza peace plan implementation.

U.S. officials, speaking to reporters on a call on the condition of anonymity, said to pay “close attention” to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who will communicate that continuing to do business with Iran “is unacceptable, and there will be consequences for it.” Rubio is meeting with top foreign officials on the sidelines of the General Assembly, too.

One of the U.S. officials said the Trump administration has granted visas for a small Iranian delegation to be in New York, although it’s not clear if the president will interact with them. Iranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen expanded their attacks on Saudi Arabia over the weekend, targeting Riyadh’s international airport and oil storage facilities — raising the prospect that fighting in the Middle East could spill over into another front.

The president weighed attacking the Houthis over the weekend at the request of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, but called off a possible round of strikes late Saturday, CBS News has reported.

It’s not clear what move Mr. Trump will make next on Iran. He told Axios, “Anything could happen with me.”

Mr. Trump is expected to meet with a number of leaders on the sidelines of the General Assembly, including U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and various Gulf state leaders. He met with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday. He’s also expected to have a pull-aside conversation with acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez, about whom Mr. Trump has spoken positively since U.S. forces removed former leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

Meanwhile, the tenuous U.S.-China relationship is likely to linger in the background of the General Assembly, as Mr. Trump prepares to host Xi in Washington later this week. American and Chinese negotiators have sought to mend their economic relationship after last year’s tit-for-tat trade war, and have discussed opening up communications on the risks posed by artificial intelligence.

China is the world’s largest buyer of Russian crude oil, potentially putting Beijing in the crosshairs of a law signed by Mr. Trump last week threatening heavy tariffs against Russia’s largest energy customers. Mr. Trump also dismissed Wall Street Journal reporting that Chinese entities provided Iran with satellite imagery of a base in Jordan used by U.S. troops before Iran killed three Americans there.

“I think he’s behaved reasonably well, and we behave reasonably well,” Mr. Trump said of Xi’s conduct during the war with Iran.

As Mr. Trump continues to have an eye on Greenland, two U.S. officials told CBS News a new U.S. security agreement for Greenland is expected to be signed in New York City. The agreement, which Mr. Trump announced Friday, would bolster the United States’ current military presence there. Mr. Trump has long insisted the U.S. must acquire Greenland for its own international security interests, although both Denmark and Greenland have flatly and repeatedly rejected the idea.

Disputes over Greenland, trade, defense spending and Mr. Trump’s push for NATO members to assist with the Iran war have frequently brought him into conflict with Canada and European states over the last year.

Last year, during his speech at the General Assembly, Mr. Trump made a point of criticizing European allies over immigration and other disagreements. “Your countries are going to hell,” he said on the world stage. He also criticized the U.N. specifically.

“What is the purpose of the United Nations?” he posed in his speech.

The president’s U.N. movements won’t be nearly as accessible as normal for viewers.

After the White House banned Politico, CNN and MS NOW from the White House, the presidential network pool — consisting of ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC — suspended pool coverage of the president. That means there likely won’t be television coverage of the president’s meetings with foreign leaders. Politico, CNN and MS NOW announced they’re suing the Trump administration, citing First Amendment concerns, in an effort to restore access.

Republican support for Trump’s handling of war in Iran shows cracks in new CNN poll

Americans’ opposition to the war in Iran has hardened, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, with almost two-thirds saying the US is not winning the conflict and more saying President Donald Trump isn’t doing enough to end it.

Americans have never held positive views about the war, and nearly seven months after it began, broad majorities say the conflict has hurt US interests, has not been worth the costs and that the president lacks a clear plan to handle it.

The findings come as Trump prepares to address the United Nations and meet with Gulf leaders about the future of the Iran war. They also come as he is confronting a metastasizing crisis with the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.

Overall, 29% of US adults approve of Trump’s handling of foreign affairs, a new low in CNN polling across both of his terms as president, while 71% say they disapprove. More see his foreign policy decisions this term as harming America’s standing in the world rather than helping it. Only 26% say they approve of the president’s handling of the situation in Iran, down from 33% a month after the war began.

Much of the decline in approval of his handling of Iran comes among Republicans. Views among Democrats and independents have been steadily negative throughout the conflict. In March, though, 73% of Republicans approved of the way Trump was handling it. Now, that figure stands at 60%. Among Republican and Republican-leaning adults, approval of Trump’s handling of Iran dips into negative territory among those younger than 45 (53% disapprove) and those who say they are not members of the Make America Great Again movement (54% disapprove).

Republicans are also less positive now than they were earlier this year about the impact of Trump’s foreign policies more broadly: About half of Republicans now say that his decisions have helped the US’ standing in the world, down 13 points since March.

Three-quarters of all adults now say Trump does not have a clear plan for handling the situation in Iran, and 78% say that he is not doing enough to end the war. About 7 in 10 say it’s at least somewhat likely that the conflict will be a long-term one, including majorities across party lines. About a third, 32%, now see a long-term conflict as very likely, the largest share to say so since the war began.

More say the war has hurt American interests than helped them (70% to 18%), and 76% say the war has not been worth either the toll it has taken in American lives or the financial burden it places on the US government.

Democrats and independents are near universal in their negative views of the war, with 97% of Democrats and 82% of independents saying it hasn’t been worth it. And few in either group see Trump as doing enough to bring the fighting to an end. Republicans are more divided on both questions: 55% say the war has been worth its costs, and 53% that Trump is doing enough to end it. But the president’s partisans are far more likely than others to see the US as winning the war: 70% say so, compared with 31% of independents and 13% of Democrats.

The president’s war Cabinet earns negative approval ratings, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio at 40% approval, Vice President JD Vance at 36% and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth at 34%.

Among Republicans, about 8 in 10 approve of Rubio (81%) and Vance (79%), while Hegseth stands at 72% approval. That edge reflects some dissatisfaction with Hegseth among non-MAGA members of the GOP coalition. Among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents who do not support MAGA, 70% approve of Rubio and 68% of Vance, while just 58% approve of Hegseth.

Americans’ views on Russia and China remain largely the same as they were earlier this year: Broad majorities see each as unfriendly or an enemy, but the poll finds shifting views on several countries that have been a focus of Trump’s foreign policies.

The share who view Ukraine as an ally or friendly has dipped from 76% in January to 70% now. On the flip side, more now see Cuba as friendly than did so in January (26%, up from 21%).

On Canada, most continue to see the country as an ally or friendly, but the share who consider it an ally has dropped from 51% in March 2025 to 38% now, in the wake of Trump’s tariff war with our northern neighbor. That drop comes across party lines, but is sharpest among Republicans (down 9 points among Democrats, 10 among independents and 23 among Republicans).

And the share calling Israel an ally or friendly has dropped to 61%, while 15% call it an enemy, the highest share to say so in CNN polling dating to 2000 and roughly double the share who felt that way in March 2025. This shift comes largely among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents — 17% in that group describe Israel as an enemy, up from 8% in March 2025. This view is also concentrated among younger Americans: 23% of those younger than 45 see Israel as an enemy, up from 9% a year and a half ago.

As some prominent Jewish Democrats in Michigan throw their support behind Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers, the state’s GOP chair told Fox News Digital he is confident that opposition to Abdul El-Sayed will spark a significant Jewish defection from the Democratic Party on Election Day.

“The big issue is Democratic donors who are Jewish, and what we’re hearing most of the angst is about from them, is El-Sayed,” Michigan GOP Chairman Jim Runestad told Fox News Digital. “His off-the-charts comments and his associations are actually striking fear into the Jewish community here in the state of Michigan.”

Indeed, roughly 500 individuals identifying as Jewish Democrats or independents living in Michigan have signed an open letter calling Rogers a “friend to the Jewish community” and warning that an El-Sayed victory could allow “far-left and anti-Jewish elements” to become dominant within the Democratic Party.

Amid his allegedly faltering Jewish support, El-Sayed released a video on social media where he showed himself spending Rosh Hashanah, essentially the Jewish New Year, with two Jewish women. The two women’s pro-Palestinian activism, along with criticism of their apparent unfamiliarity with the Hebrew prayers featured in the video, drew scrutiny from critics — including one Democratic state lawmaker.

“Man I really hate tokenism,” Democrat state Rep. Noah Arbit, who represents the heavily Jewish town of West Bloomfield, wrote.

“This isn’t designed to appeal to the Jewish community. It’s for any non-Jews concerned about his bigotry who won’t immediately be suspicious,” Jonathan Greenberg, a rabbi who leads the effort to combat antisemitism at a conservative advocacy group, wrote.

El-Sayed’s video nonetheless drew significant engagement on social media, generating thousands of interactions across X and TikTok.

Even if El-Sayed alienates Jewish voters, it is unclear if that will have lasting, or even down-ballot, effects for Democrats in Michigan. The open letter endorsing Rogers, for instance, makes clear that signatories do not necessarily support President Donald Trump and states that their support is specific to “this year and in this Senate race.”

As it relates to the short term, the Rogers campaign claims that their Jewish outreach efforts have been successful.

A source within the Rogers campaign told Fox News Digital that their social media inboxes are “constantly” being filled with positive messages from Jewish voters and that they’ve been “inundated” with outreach more generally. The source also claimed that the fundraisers they held with donors have gone well, though they did not provide specific numbers.

Runestad, however, is confident that Republicans can make lasting gains with the Jewish community if they play their cards right.

“We think there’s also an opening for Republicans long term to start getting the Jewish community to look at the Republicans from a different perspective,” he told Fox News Digital. “We have been very connected to so much of what the Jewish community believes in terms of being entrepreneurial, supporting lower taxes and reducing regulation.”

While Jewish voters swinging significantly toward Rogers could benefit the Republican, he will also have to contend with El-Sayed’s strong support in Michigan’s Arab American community, particularly in Dearborn and Dearborn Heights, where he built a commanding advantage in the Democratic primary.

“We have been outreaching to the Jewish community here in Oakland County, which is a very substantial community, and I think we’re going to see a real sea change this cycle,” Runestad said.

“The real concern for the Jewish community is someone like Hasan Piker. Anybody who has looked at his comments — they’re off the charts,” he added. “This is like the right-hand man of El-Sayed, and some of his despicable antisemitic comments are certainly going to be brought to bear in this election. The Jewish community is becoming more and more aware of just how dangerous someone like Hasan Piker is and his connection to El-Sayed.”

El-Sayed has dismissed his proximity to Piker as insignificant to Michigan voters and called the streamer’s assertion that America “deserved” 9/11 “dumb.” He has also pushed back against claims that his campaign is floundering among Jewish voters.

“Abdul is grateful for the good conversations he’s had with Jewish leaders across Michigan, and he’ll continue to be actively engaged with communities to build the coalition that will defeat Rogers, restore Democratic control of the U.S. Senate, and put a much-needed check on Trump’s reckless agenda,” campaign spokesman Cole Wozniak told Fox News Digital.

In response to the pro-Rogers open letter, liberal Jewish leaders in Michigan have collected signatures from over 800 people identifying as Jewish Michiganders affirming their support for El-Sayed, though noting that some of them disagree with him on foreign policy and other issues. El-Sayed has made assuaging the concerns of Michigan Jews a priority for his campaign, courting endorsements from high-profile Jewish lawmakers and meeting frequently with members of the community.

Kamala Harris returns to campaign trail to boost Abdul El-Sayed in critical Michigan Senate race

Kamala Harris is set to campaign Tuesday with Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, in a joint appearance between two Democrats in a state crucial to the party’s fortunes in this fall’s midterms — and the presidential primary to follow.

Harris and El-Sayed plan to hold a roundtable in the Detroit area focused on Black maternal healthcare, an issue she focused on as vice president. She will also attend a private reception with Michigan leaders hosted by the Oakland County Democratic Party and its chair, former US Rep. Brenda Lawrence, where the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Jocelyn Benson, is expected to speak, a source familiar with the matter said.

Later in the day, Harris plans to separately meet with Rev. Wendell Anthony, president of the NAACP’s Detroit branch; Rev. Genetta Hatcher of The Room Church; and other faith leaders in an event focused on voter turnout.

It’s a notably robust schedule for the former vice president, whose political plans are a subject of intense debate within the Democratic Party. Michigan, which Harris narrowly lost in 2024, isn’t just a swing state in general elections — it’s also poised to become one of the first six states to vote in the Democratic nominating process under a new calendar approved by the Democratic National Committee this year.

“People like her,” Anthony told CNN on Monday. “People like the fact that this African American woman who was vice president, for the first time in the nation’s history, is coming back to the ‘D’ to talk to us about the importance of voting.”

Anthony said that “nobody has a lock on anything” when it comes to the 2028 primary — echoing the sentiments of several other Michiganders who spoke to CNN.

Stephanie Stamps, a Democratic voter from Farmington, said she “possibly” would want to see Harris run for president in 2028, but noted “there might be better candidates at this point.”

“I don’t feel like she had the best shake” in 2024, said Stamps, arguing then-President Joe Biden should have dropped out earlier to allow for a full nominating contest to play out. “I think she would have done a good job, but I think she’s gone a little bit underground since that point, or at least I haven’t seen a lot of her.”

Democrats need a net gain of four Senate seats to win control of the chamber in November. Crucial to that math is holding onto the seat of retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters in Michigan — a battleground state, to be sure, but one that is generally more favorable to Democrats than other states with competitive Senate races this fall including Alaska, Texas and Ohio.

Harris and El-Sayed, a former public health official in Wayne County, are seeking to unify a Democratic Party fractured by his hard-fought primary against Rep. Haley Stevens for the Senate nomination.

El-Sayed won the primary on the strength of his support among progressives. But Black voters, including Anthony, largely backed Stevens. Former Rep. Mike Rogers, the Republican Senate nominee, has openly appealed to Black Democrats as well as Jewish voters amid El-Sayed’s sharp criticism of Israel and an initial statement about an antisemitic attack in March on a synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, near Detroit.

Anthony, who endorsed Stevens in the primary, said an El-Sayed endorsement is “still a work in progress.”

“I think he’s a good man. I really believe that. I think that he’s saying some of the right things,” he said.

Two years ago, Harris and El-Sayed were on opposite sides of a key political debate in Michigan. El-Sayed, a vocal critic of Israel, initially supported the “Uncommitted” movement, a push to vote against Biden in the state’s Democratic primary over his handling of the war between Israel and Hamas.

The Michigan Democrat eventually supported Harris as the nominee as she campaigned against Trump. But Harris still had to navigate the angst within her own party over the administration’s handling of the conflict in Gaza, and frustration from Arab American voters and supporters of the “Uncommitted” movement played into her loss in the state.

Publicly, Harris has repeatedly said when asked about a 2028 run that she is “thinking about it” — and has offered no timeline for a decision. In addition to the Michigan trip, Harris is planning to campaign with Democrats in Nevada and Georgia in the coming weeks.

“I think it’s important that we bring different groups of people together. The thing about democracy is — it’s not about dividing. It’s about bringing people together,” El-Sayed said in an interview with CNN on Labor Day. “I’m grateful for the folks that she’s willing to talk to on our behalf.”

Stamps, who is supporting El-Sayed in the Senate race, said she hopes Harris can convince those voters who didn’t cast ballots in 2024 because they “thought maybe it would be closer to a slam dunk” to turn out in this election.

“Hopefully, we’ll get out and vote this time, since it’s kind of proven that if you don’t, who knows what we’re going to end up with,” Stamps said.

也门胡塞武装说，沙特阿拉伯星期二（9月22日）对多个城市发动致命打击。上周，胡塞武装发起攻势，占领三处红海战略要地，基本控制了曼德海峡通航的咽喉要道。

法新社报道，胡塞武装旗下的萨巴通讯社称，在港口城市摩卡（Mocha），有六名平民在沙特的空袭中丧生，其中包括两名儿童。
