Ukrainian Ambassador Olga Stefanishyna took note of what she said was an improved relationship between Ukraine and the U.S., telling reporters Thursday that the “overall dynamics” have shifted.

In just the past six weeks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has had two phone calls and three meetings with President Trump, including one earlier this week. Stefanishyna, who spoke at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast, credited recent personnel shuffles at the State Department and White House, saying they have “helped the process.”

Ukraine now provides “regular updates” about its military situation and has been able to combat what she characterized as a prior, erroneous narrative that Russia was winning the war, now in its fifth year.

“Ukraine should be this success case for President Trump,” Stefanishyna said, noting the dramatic turnaround in relations since the contentious Oval Office meeting with Mr. Trump and Vice President JD Vance in February 2025. She said Kyiv has also begun building a case that Ukraine is a contributor to European security.

It has shifted its approach from seeking military, “political and moral support” from the U.S. to producing concrete “deliverables” for the Trump administration, including on defense industrial cooperation and Patriot missile system production, she said. Asked about the possibility of visits to Kyiv by envoys Steve Witkoff or Jared Kushner, she confirmed it had been raised in this week’s Oval Office meeting, though she declined to provide a date. “It might happen next week, it might happen later,” she said, also indicating both planned to travel to Moscow after Ukraine.

She said Ukraine was putting much stock in reinvigorating diplomacy in order to reach a ceasefire before, as she put it, “the deadliest winter.”

On air defenses, Stefanishyna noted Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s presence at the Oval Office meeting and said while there had been no “firm commitments” for additional air defenses before winter, discussions are underway on long-term procurement deals and potential missile swaps with countries that already have contracts in place.

On Iran, Stefanishyna insisted Ukraine is not trying to connect the Mideast conflict with its war.

“There’s no policy line or any intention to make these processes interconnected,” she said, adding that a recent Ukrainian strike on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea was “unintentional” and quickly followed by diplomatic outreach because Kyiv was “not willing to escalate the situation.”

Stefanishyna also pointed to the Russian ballistic missile that reached Poland this week as evidence that the threat from Moscow extends beyond Ukraine. “We did our best to destroy this missile … but we were not successful,” she said.

Ukraine’s long-range attacks into Russia have been a “game-changer,” she said.

“Russians saw the missiles in places Russia [has] never seen any missiles, like for centuries,” she said. “So this has a major effect to the people because they understand that the war is something that now really relates to them.”

Stefanishyna is hopeful that Congress will enact the bill Sen. Lindsey Graham was working on when he died this month, a measure that would impose new tariffs on those who buy oil from Russia and more sanctions. She predicted that if the Graham bill were signed into law within the next two to three months, it would have “a devastating effect” on Russia and disincentivize its enablers.

Plans to produce Patriot interceptors in Ukraine are progressing, she said, with current estimates ranging from “12 months to five years” — though Ukraine believes it can accelerate that timeline. Raytheon teams have already visited Ukraine, Lockheed Martin is seeking approvals to send technical personnel, and the White House requested a roadmap for establishing the capability after Zelenskyy and Mr. Trump met in Ankara a few weeks ago, she said.

The ambassador also embraced the attention generated by conservative activist Laura Loomer’s recent trip to Ukraine, calling it “impactful” and saying she hopes it prompts more conservative influencers to visit the country. She declined to comment on any involvement by the embassy in organizing the trip and did not offer any insight into how it came about or was financed.

In a lighter moment, she said Loomer’s stop at McDonald’s in Kyiv “was my recommendation” and said Zelenskyy had “fun” during their interview.

Stefanishyna told reporters she chose to step down amid domestic political pressures and an ongoing asset-declaration investigation, though she added that Zelenskyy did not ask her to resign and wanted her to remain because negotiations over Patriot production and military support are at a critical stage.

North American nations reject Infantino’s World Cup investment plan after UEFA’s boycott threat

    July 30, 2026 / 5:32 PM EDT / CBS/AP

North America’s soccer body on Thursday rejected FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private equity investors, joining European nations in opposition.

The 41-member Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football held an urgent meeting Thursday after UEFA, the European soccer body, had agreed to boycott the World Cup and all other FIFA competitions to protest Infantino’s plan.

“During the meeting, the membership expressed deep concerns about the lack of due process surrounding the proposal, the artificially short deadline imposed, and the absence of any review or approval by the relevant FIFA governance bodies,” CONCACAF said in a statement.

“In addition, the need for private equity investment to fund new and existing FIFA Forward programs following the most profitable FIFA World Cup in history was questioned.”

Infantino’s secret project was revealed Tuesday to spin off its commercial operations in a new $20 billion subsidiary called FIFA Forward Enterprise, or FFE, that would be 20% owned by private investors. The core investor would be a New York investment firm, Thrive Capital, created by Joshua Kushner, the brother of President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

“CONCACAF is a confederation united by the love of our game, where football comes first. Guided by this philosophy over the past ten years we have built, from the ground up, an organization founded on service, transparent governance, and the long-term stewardship of football,” CONCACAF said in its statement. “History has shown FIFA and the football family what happens when the custodians of the game lose sight of these values.”

And on a seismic day in soccer politics, a traditional bedrock of support in Asia for FIFA and Infantino had earlier Thursday been shaken.

“FIFA’s unilateral actions appear to undermine the very foundations of continental football,” the Asian Football Confederation president Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa warned in a letter Thursday to member federations that was seen by The Associated Press.

Sheikh Salman, an ally to Infantino since losing the FIFA presidential election to him in 2016, wrote that “such an initiative will not succeed without the support of all the confederations, which is not the case now.”

Infantino wrote Tuesday to the 211 members — already the effective owners of FIFA as a nonprofit association under Swiss law — that if they approve FFE, their promised $10 million basic funding for the next four years would double to $20 million. He projected their FIFA funding through 2038 would be $86 million each, instead of about $36 million. Infantino has given the 211 members until mid-September to accept the plan.

“This is not merely a profound failure of leadership, but an abdication of FIFA’s duty as the custodian of world football,” said UEFA, where Infantino was a longtime staffer and its CEO-like general secretary when he was first elected to lead FIFA in 2016.

A source close to Joshua Kushner’s company, Thrive Capital, dismissed criticism over the firm’s involvement in the FFE investment plan to CBS News on Thursday.

“I think the first assumption is that Trump was involved in FFE in any capacity, which is just not accurate,” the source told CBS News. “Josh himself does not have any links with the administration, he does not have any political roles, he has not donated to them, he is not involved in any capacity. If you look at his donation record, all of the causes he has donated to are Democrat … it’s kind of unfair to assume a lot about somebody just because of what their brother does.”

“Thrive is a pretty big investment firm. Thrive now has $60 billion assets under management,” the source told CBS News when pressed about whether the Kushner family name had carried weight in getting the deal with FIFA done, adding that Joshua Kushner is “a pretty successful business person in his own right.”

The next scheduled FIFA tournament is within weeks in Europe — the Women’s Under-20 World Cup hosted by Poland starting Sept. 5 — and the four British federations comprise FIFA’s only bidder to host the 2035 Women’s World Cup. That decision is due Nov. 23.

    • The plaintiffs in Thursday’s lawsuit included Agroecology Commons, Oregon Farm Corps, Syracuse-Onondaga Food Systems Alliance, Third Sector New England, and the Washington Farmland Trust.
    • The lawsuit objected to a memo, opens new tab signed by Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on December 31 on terms for issuing grants.
    • Rollins said the Trump administration was taking action to eliminate “radical left ideology.”
    • “The new terms and conditions include several provisions that impose vague and unprecedented substantive requirements on USDA grantees by mandating that grantees follow the Trump Administration’s position on issues of social policy, including on issues of race and ‌diversity, gender identity, and immigration,” the lawsuit said.
    • The Agriculture Department did not respond to a request for comment. Its website says it distributed over $145 billion through 287 programs in FY 2025.
    • Trump has attempted to restrict grants and federal funds for nonprofit groups and educational institutions over many issues.
    • These include diversity programs, pro-Palestinian protests against U.S. ally Israel’s assault on Gaza, transgender policies and climate programs.
    • Trump has particularly cracked down on diversity programs, arguing they are anti-merit and discriminate against white people and men.
    • Civil rights groups say such programs help marginalized groups like women, the LGBT community and ethnic minorities by addressing systemic and generational inequities.
    • Trump has also pursued an aggressive immigration crackdown widely condemned by rights groups.

Netflix sued for $105 million for allegedly losing “master copy” of unreleased Nicolas Cage movie

    July 30, 2026 / 5:36 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Mary Cunningham

A U.K.-based production company and a filmmaker are suing Netflix for $105 million, alleging the streaming company lost a drive containing a copy of an unreleased espionage movie, which they claim undermined its commercial prospects.

The complaint filed on Wednesday in California district court alleges that the film’s associate producer, Daniel Haido, hand-delivered an unencrypted master copy of the film to Netflix so the company could screen it as a potential buyer. Haido verbally instructed the employee to delete the files after the screening, according to the suit.

A little over a week after the screening, Netflix emailed the filmmakers to say the drive had been stolen, the plaintiffs allege.

“Someone stole a good amount of drives from our office desks this past week,” a Netflix executive wrote in the email, according to the suit.

The complaint notes the movie, entitled “Fortitude,” took over seven years to make and cost $45 million. It tells the story of a secret mission called Operation Fortitude during World War II that was orchestrated to mislead the Nazis about the Allied invasion of Europe.

The film stars Nicolas Cage as Dusko Popov, a real-life spy during World War II, as well as Sir Ben Kingsley and Ron Perlman.

The plaintiffs said studios will now be dissuaded from buying the rights to the movie, knowing that a version of it could be released by a third party for free.

“The film’s value depended in significant part on its exclusivity as an unreleased, first-to-market work,” the complaint states. “By losing control of the film, Netflix destroyed that exclusivity and materially, if not completely, impaired the film’s marketability.”

A Netflix spokesperson said the company “disputes any claim that it bears the risk of loss for a film delivered without the proper industry-standard safeguards.” Netflix has offered to monitor piracy sites for unauthorized distribution or sale of the movie.

“While we do not own the rights to Fortitude, we take content security seriously and have taken extra measures to support the filmmaker and his team,” the spokesperson said in a statement to CBS News.

Musk’s America PAC plans $100 million-plus effort to boost Republican turnout, NYT reports

    • America PAC confirms plans for major turnout role but gives no spending figure
    • PAC spent $52.3 million since January 1, 2025, campaign finance filings show

NEW YORK, July 30 (Reuters) – Elon Musk’s pro-Trump political group is planning to spend up to $120 million to turn out Republican voters in the November congressional elections, the New York Times reported on Thursday.

America PAC said in a statement to Reuters that it expects to play a major role in the Republican voter turnout effort and argued that the party is well positioned to retain control of Congress despite historical trends that often favor the opposition party in midterm elections.

“We’re excited to again be part of the team,” Andrew Romeo, the spokesperson for the America PAC, said in the statement.

He declined to provide further details, including how much America PAC plans to spend, but confirmed an earlier report from Axios that said that the political action committee planned to make a “huge investment” on door knockers, digital advertising and a direct-mail campaign to turn out conservative voters.

The effort would mark one of the biggest outside spending campaigns of the 2026 midterms and further cement Musk’s position as one of the Republican Party’s most influential financiers. The billionaire Tesla and SpaceX chief spent heavily to help elect President Donald Trump and other Republican candidates in 2024.

With Trump’s public approval ratings sagging and the electorate sour on the economy, Republicans face an enthusiasm gap with Democrats, who are seeking to win control of both chambers of Congress. Musk’s infusion of cash could provide a major boost to the Republican effort to galvanize voters.

The voting drive will run across at least eight states, the Times reported, citing two people briefed on the plans who spoke anonymously. Musk has authorized between $100 million and $120 million on the program, the newspaper reported.

America PAC has already spent $52.3 million since January 1, 2025, according to federal campaign finance filings reviewed by Reuters. The super PAC has raised $50.3 million so far in this election cycle with roughly $50 million of that coming directly from Musk, the filings show.

So-called super PACs can accept an unlimited amount of money from individuals and corporations. They can also spend as much as they want, but they can’t coordinate directly with candidates or campaigns.

GOP Senate nominee ends press conference after questions on ties to White nationalist influencer

Republican Senate candidate Mike Collins ended a press conference Thursday after repeatedly declining to answer questions about his relationship with a son-in-law who promoted White nationalist ideology and circulated antisemitic content online, as first revealed by CNN’s KFile.

Collins, a two-term congressman from Georgia, was appearing at Monroe County Hospital to outline his health care priorities.

But reporters pressed him to address online statements from his son-in-law, David Alan Scheer II, and whether Scheer had done business or campaign work for him. Collins said the matter had been “fully addressed” and pivoted to attacking Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff.

“You know, we’ve fully addressed that,” Collins said. “But Jon Ossoff refuses to disavow these democrat socialist movements in our country.”

Collins then criticized Ossoff over transgender rights, federal spending, immigration, bail policies and what he called “radical anti-Israel extremists.”

The questions followed a CNN KFile investigation into Scheer, who is married to Collins’ daughter, Summer.

CNN found that Scheer had used his large social media following to promote White nationalist ideology, share antisemitic conspiracy theories and circulate Nazi imagery. He has also called for Muslims to be deported and shared material promoting Patriot Front, a White supremacist group.

Scheer has appeared in family photographs on Collins’ campaign website and social media and attended Collins’ Senate primary election-night party. Voter and property records reviewed by CNN indicate that Scheer is registered to vote at a Collins-owned house adjacent to the congressman’s estate in Jackson, Georgia.

One of those photos was removed following CNN’s reporting. Collins told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution it was a “personal decision” to remove the photo.

At a press conference on Thursday in Washington, DC, Ossoff blasted Collins for not answering questions.

“The congressman still, two weeks later, refuses to answer whether he or his businesses paid this neo-Nazi,” Ossoff said. “And today, facing these questions from the press corps in Georgia, Congressman Mike Collins ran away. He is refusing to answer questions, and Georgians have a right to know the answers.”

Scheer also appears to have narrated promotional videos for Collins’ trucking company. In one social media post filmed in front of trucks, Scheer said he was producing videos for a “client.” CNN asked Collins’ campaign whether Scheer had worked for the company as an employee, contractor or in another capacity, and whether he had a role in Collins’ campaign.

Collins declined to answer repeated questions from reporters on Thursday, including if Scheer has done any paid work for his businesses or his campaign.

“Could you address the question regarding antisemitism?” one person interjected.

Collins continued criticizing Ossoff. As a reporter asked what role Scheer had played in Collins’ campaign, Collins said voters would “choose to get rid of” Ossoff in November.

“Could you address his question, please, sir?” another reporter asked.

When Collins ended the press conference, a person asked, “You don’t want to talk about your son-in-law at all? You want to embrace him in the family? Share his views?”

‘The irony’: Ketanji Brown Jackson roasted after stressing impartiality on Michelle Obama’s podcast

    July 30, 2026 4:42pm EDT / Fox News

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson is being mocked online over the “irony” of saying she is “very, very mindful and scrupulous” about being impartial during a guest appearance on former first lady Michelle Obama’s podcast, “IMO.”

During an appearance of more than an hour on the podcast, Jackson, a Biden appointee to the Supreme Court, stressed the importance of being unbiased, saying, “You really have to be focused on that.”

“There are lots of limits on what judges can do, and I try to be very, very mindful and scrupulous with respect to that because, as you say, our obligation is to be unbiased in our approach,” said Jackson.

“And, so, you have to then navigate all the sources that could make for an appearance of partiality, which you want to avoid.”

She added that “there are lots of things that I end up not accepting for that reason.”

The former first lady asked Jackson about the practices she follows to remain unbiased.

“You also have to watch your exposure to things, so that there isn’t a bias,” said Obama. “What does that mean for you in terms of reading the paper and listening to the news? And how do get your information and what do you have to be careful about? And how are you dealing with the potential conflicts so that you do stay above board?”

Jackson said there are employees in the court whose job is to be “assisting us in that way.”

“When I get invitations to do things, I always have them screened by the legal office, the public information office, just to make sure that there are no ethical conflicts, that this is not a fundraiser, you know,” she told Obama.

“Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown discusses the importance of being neutral while she is sitting on Michelle Obama’s podcast set!” Turning Point USA contributor John Amanchukwu wrote.

“She doesn’t really expect anyone to believe that, does she?” conservative influencer Patricia Foster wrote.

“Make it make sense,” commentator DeVory Darkins wrote.

“Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson can’t be real. She says it is important to be neutral as a Supreme Court justice……..while she is literally on MAJOR leftist Michelle Obama’s podcast,” Darkins wrote. “We ALL know how impartial she is.”
