The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) officially opened in the Caribbean island nation of Antigua and Barbuda on Tuesday (November 3). Amid global trade tensions and geopolitical instability, leaders will focus on strengthening intra-Commonwealth trade, addressing climate change, and discussing compensation for slave trading during the British colonial era.
According to reports from the Associated Press, the Commonwealth consists of 56 member states spanning five continents, with a combined population of approximately 2.7 billion. The four-day summit will include attendance by officials from Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Brazil, and the United Arab Emirates, in addition to leaders of member states.
Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey stated that global conflicts, economic shocks, rising living costs, and weaponized tariffs are directly affecting people’s livelihoods. Facing U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff hikes, member states must strengthen intra-Commonwealth trade, attract investment, and reduce trade barriers to mitigate external impacts.
British Prime Minister Burnham recently announced his willingness to issue a formal apology for Britain’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, but declined to pay compensation, instead proposing to promote debt restructuring to assist the Commonwealth’s poorest nations.
Some Caribbean leaders have demanded that the summit discuss slave trade compensation. Omad, Chair of the Antigua and Barbuda Compensation Support Committee, emphasized that a mere apology is insufficient; the UK must also take concrete actions to redress historical harms.
Climate change is also a key focus of the summit. Forty-nine Commonwealth member states are coastal nations facing the threat of sea-level rise. It is anticipated that the countries will establish a fund to assist member states in transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy, and to promote digital skills training for approximately 10 million young people.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla of the UK are also in attendance at the summit.
