Maine Democrats to nominate Troy Jackson to replace Platner in US Senate race

    • Summary
    • Jackson will start a 101-day campaign to try to unseat Senator Susan Collins
    • His campaign said it has raised more than $1 million this month
    • A University of New Hampshire poll this week showed Jackson narrowly leading Collins

WASHINGTON, July 25 (Reuters) – Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson is poised to accept the Democratic Party’s U.S. Senate nomination on Saturday, formally ending the two-week scramble to replace Graham Platner on the ballot for November’s midterm election.

Platner withdrew on July 10 after sexual assault allegations, which he denies.

Jackson, a fifth-generation logger and former Republican from northern Maine, locked up the nomination last weekend, when his supporters dominated the state party’s delegate selection process. Jackson’s top rivals suspended their campaigns after his decisive showing.

Donations from nearly 25,000 supporters flooded the presumptive nominee’s campaign coffers with upwards of $600,000 between Sunday and Wednesday. Jackson’s campaign said on Wednesday it had raised more than $1 million since he jumped into the truncated race earlier this month.

Some 600 delegates will select the nominee at a party convention in Bangor. Jackson and Saundra Pelletier, the wealthy chief executive of a biopharmaceutical company, are the only remaining candidates in a race that had ballooned to a field of 13.

    MAINE RACE CRUCIAL FOR SENATE

Jackson’s acceptance will kick off a 101-day sprint to unseat five-term Senator Susan Collins, a vulnerable Republican who has used her seniority and perch as Senate Appropriations Committee chair to steer resources to Maine.

Collins is the only Republican up for reelection in a state that Democrat Kamala Harris won in 2024, making Maine a top flip opportunity for Democrats hoping to regain control of the chamber for the final two years of President Donald Trump’s administration.

Republicans hold a 53-47 Senate majority, but winning Maine is crucial to both parties’ midterm strategies. Victory for Republicans would shrink Democrats’ path to a majority, while a Democratic upset would support the party’s bid for control.

Jackson held a narrow lead over Collins among likely general election voters in a

University of New Hampshire poll, opens new tab
    released this week.

Collins, a 73-year-old moderate with an $11 million war chest, was last reelected in 2020. She won by nearly 9 percentage points, even as Mainers backed Democrat Joe Biden over Trump by a similar margin. Harris, herself a replacement nominee after Biden abruptly withdrew, carried Maine by about 7 percentage points.

Experts say affordability, Trump and immigration are likely to be key issues in the general election. Jackson has called for abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, an agency that has killed several people in high-profile incidents this year, including a 26-year-old Colombian man in Biddeford, Maine, on July 13.

Collins voted for $70 billion in immigration enforcement funding without ICE reforms last month but has called for a pause in the agency’s traffic stops. Trump has since said such stops must continue, describing them as one of the agency’s most important and effective tools.

Social issues will also likely surface in the contest between Collins and Jackson. Jackson now supports abortion rights and same-sex marriage but opposed both in his state legislative career until his second Senate term in 2016.

His anti-abortion Senate voting record was raised in ads against him during his unsuccessful run in Maine’s gubernatorial primary this year.

While it’s unclear whether Republicans will invest in similar advertising in the Collins race, Republican officials say his past position leaves Collins less vulnerable over her vote to put Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, which led to the overturning of federal abortion rights.

BANGOR, Maine – The sprint to replace ex-candidate Graham Platner will come to an end on Saturday as Maine Democrats are expected to quickly elevate Troy Jackson as their party’s nominee in the high-stakes Senate showdown with longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

Jackson, a former state Senate president, is on a glide path to replace Platner at the Maine Democratic Party nominating convention in Bangor, after winning the vast majority of the voting delegates chosen last weekend by Democrats in the northern New England state’s 16 counties. And Jackson’s top rivals in the race to replace Platner backed him after dropping out of the race the past few days, leaving only one long-shot candidate for delegates to also consider at the convention.

The Senate race in Maine, where Collins is the only GOP incumbent running for re-election in a state President Donald Trump lost in the 2024 election, is one of roughly a dozen midterm showdowns across the country that will determine if Republicans hold onto their slim majority or if the Democrats win back control of the chamber.

“Let’s get to work to defeat Susan Collins and create the Maine that working people deserve,” Jackson, a fifth-generation logger from the remote northern tip of Maine and a one-time conservative Republican who became a Democrat over two decades ago, said in a social media post ahead of the convention.

While Jackson quickly raised over $1 million for his burgeoning Senate campaign and coalesced party support, there are some potential warning signs.

Following reports this past week digging into Jackson’s alleged temper and workplace conduct, reported claims of mortgage improprieties as well as other potential liabilities including his past strict anti-abortion stance, there are concerns by some in the party that following the Platner implosion, Democrats have landed another unvetted nominee.

“This is a bit of a rocket vetting process,” a Democratic strategist who works on Senate races, who asked to remain anonymous to speak more freely, told Fox News Digital. “Maine Democrats have seemingly made their choice and they’re just going to have to ride with it.”

A veteran Democratic consultant who also asked for anonymity said that “it’s very clear that Democrats should not be looking to Maine to flip the Senate”

“The good news is that we have upset opportunities in places like Texas, Iowa, and Alaska,” added the consultant, who works with centrist Democratic Senate candidates.

Platner, a military combat veteran and oyster farmer who was backed progressive champion and Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont soon after he launched his bid last August, saw his campaign quickly catch fire. Two-term Democratic Gov. Janet Mills, who was heavily recruited by longtime Democratic Senate leader Sen.Chuck Schumer to run for the Senate, suspended her campaign this spring after trailing Platner in fundraising and in the polls.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT TROY JACKSON, WHO’S ABOUT TO REPLACE GRAHAM PLATNER AS THE DEMOCRATS’ SENATE NOMINEE

But even as Platner steamrolled the Democratic establishment and crushed the competition last month in Maine’s primary to capture the nomination, he had already been forced on defense in the wake of a slew of scandals.

Platner dropped out earlier this month, amid calls from top Democrats in Maine and across the country to immediately exit the race following an explosive report containing an allegation of rape from a woman he previously dated. Platner denied the report but stepped aside.

Jackson, who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, campaigned alongside Platner during the primary. And he quickly made the case that he was the best equipped candidate to grab the mantle of the progressive and populist movement that had backed Platner.

Similar to Platner, Jackson is running on a platform aimed at working-class voters. He backs raising taxes on billionaires, the universal healthcare system known as “Medicare-for-all,” abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and he opposes military aid to Israel at a time that Democrats are increasingly divided on support for America’s longtime Middle East ally.

Jackson, who also had Sanders’ support as he ran governor, is currently backed in his Senate campaign by Our Revolution, the group born in 2016 out of Sanders’ first presidential campaign.

Rep. Ro Khanna of California, a leading progressive in the House and a potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender, was a top Platner backer. Khanna quickly moved his support to Jackson in this month’s sprint to succeed Platner.

And Jackson enjoys strong support from labor unions in Maine. The labor backing, along with support from Platner’s former allies, helped Jackson capture the overwhelming majority of county-selected delegates last weekend.

The 500 delegates chosen last weekend, along with 101 selected by the state party, will vote for the nominee at the convention. While the delegates on Jackson’s slate are not required to support him at the convention, he is considered all but certain to secure the nomination.

Republicans are arguing that Democrats stacked the deck to back Jackson as Platner’s replacement.

“Maine voters have been shut out by the Democrat establishment with a rigged nominating process to crown Platner 2.0 without a single vote being cast,” Republican National Committee spokesperson Kristen Cianci charged in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Collins, as she runs for a sixth six-year term in the Senate, is facing a rough political climate for Republicans, amid GOP President Donald Trump’s underwater approval ratings, persistent inflation and what polls indicate is an unpopular war with Iran.

The senator, known as a moderate Republican who at times has voted against Trump, last month received bipartisan praise after reaching a milestone by casting her 10,000th consecutive Senate vote.

But Democrats are taking aim at Collins over her comments that she didn’t regret her 2018 vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, despite his crucial vote four years later to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion ruling.

And following the fatal shooting in Maine earlier this month involving federal immigration agents, Democrats heavily criticized the Senate Appropriations Committee chair for her support for ICE funding.

But Collins has a history of defeating the Democrats’ efforts to oust her from the Senate.

Six years ago, she trailed Democratic challenger Sara Gideon, the then-Maine House speaker, but the senator ended up winning re-election by nearly 9 points.

The Senate showdown in Maine is expected to be competitive, combustible, and expensive, with outside groups on both sides spending big bucks to run ads.

ChatGPT now has a space for sharing medical records. Should you?

Hundreds of millions of people a week turn to ChatGPT for health advice, and now the platform has a dedicated space for those users.

This week, OpenAI rolled out Health in ChatGPT, where users can upload medical records such as lab results and medications, and connect Apple Health to allow the platform access to health and fitness data.

“With your permission, ChatGPT can now draw on relevant information you’ve connected in Health to help you compare a new result with prior tests, summarize changes since your last appointment, or explore how sleep, activity, and workouts relate to your routine,” OpenAI said Thursday in a news release.

OpenAI says 300 million people already turn to ChatGPT with health-related questions weekly — something that Tanzeem Choudhury, the chief of health innovation at Cornell Tech, says is reflective of the state of healthcare in the U.S.

“Our healthcare is broken,” Choudhury told CBS News. “I think that’s why we are seeing so many people asking for advice.”

Choudhury, who has been working at the intersection of artificial intelligence and health for more than 15 years, said AI can be a democratizing force in healthcare at a time when many Americans face barriers to access, but that “we just need to think about the risks and have better protections in place.”

Choudhury said users turning to AI for health information need to understand the risks and trade-offs associated with sharing personal data with a large language model such as ChatGPT.

AI can hallucinate and give misleading, inaccurate or even dangerous medical advice. This week, a Florida man alleged in a lawsuit that ChatGPT’s medical advice nearly led to his death after experiencing a pulmonary embolism. An OpenAI spokesperson told CBS News that “ChatGPT is not a doctor and should never be used as a substitute for medical care, diagnosis or treatment.” A few months ago, a California teenager died after ChatGPT told him it was safe to consume what turned out to be a fatal concoction of substances. OpenAI said in a statement to CBS News at the time that “this is a heartbreaking situation, and our thoughts are with the family,” and said that version of ChatGPT is no longer available to the public.

In its statement Thursday announcing Health in ChatGPT, OpenAI said ChatGPT can make mistakes and “does not replace the care and judgment of qualified medical professionals.”

CBS News has reached out to OpenAI for comment, and asked whether ChatGPT is equipped to recognize when to advise a user to seek help from a medical professional.

As it currently stands, Choudhury said, the onus is on the user to determine when to escalate concerns to a medical professional — and when not to trust advice given by a chatbot.

“It depends on the user’s state and capacity to actually make that right decision,” she said, adding that some users — such as a person who is elderly or cognitively impaired — might be susceptible to misunderstanding the risks of interacting with a chatbot.

Aside from a likelihood of inaccuracy, the issue of sharing sensitive, potentially deeply personal information with a chatbot is also something users should consider, said Vishal Misra, a Columbia University computer science professor and vice dean of computing and artificial intelligence.

“The same risks that exist sharing health data with anyone transfer here,” he told CBS News. “You are sharing something very personal.”

OpenAI said physicians around the world helped develop realistic health scenarios and test Health before its release. Health in ChatGPT contains extra safeguards, OpenAI said, including additional encryption protections, and will check in with users before taking action in a connected plugin, like sending an email, to make sure that it is properly matching the user’s request. OpenAI said records shared with ChatGPT will not be used to train its models or target ads.

Choudhury noted that it’s unclear whether privacy policies like this one are perpetual and how this data could be used in the long term. AI companies have quietly changed their terms of service in the past, with the FTC warning consumers about the risks of sharing data.

For some users, the benefits of turning to ChatGPT for advice might outweigh the risks, Misra said, adding that he has used ChatGPT to help track some of his own health data.

“It could be a good thing if done carefully because it can do a lot of things,” he said. “It can find connections that maybe a really competent physician might miss.”

Using data provided by a user, AI analysis can help users track their health information over time, which can then be shared with a physician to provide a more comprehensive picture of a patient’s health. While ChatGPT might provide helpful information, Misra says to resist treating it like a doctor — and to keep a real one in the loop.

“Whatever it says, take it to an actual human physician,” he said. “Do not act. The only action that you should take is to consult your physician.”

    2026-07-25T10:00:26.992Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/25/politics/gen-z-political-influencers-money

Inside the world of Gen Z political influencers, where the money is messy, but the work keeps coming

    2026-07-25T10:00:26.992Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/25/politics/gen-z-political-influencers-money

Maria Comstock didn’t have a phone until she was 18. By her next birthday, she had a million followers.

Her “Point of View”-style videos on dating, politics and the workforce caught the eyes of social media users and, eventually, political campaigns, who found them relatable. What began as a Covid-era hobby has turned into a job.

But as it turns out, the work of a Gen Z political influencer is a complicated, unruly business, Comstock and others can attest.

Filming, production and publishing can come with all the responsibilities of a media executive. The clients can be demanding. The atmosphere is often competitive. The pay is inconsistent. And the party you support might get voted out of office anyway.

“Everyone’s a content creator in this day and age,” says Comstock, now 24 and using her digital fluency to help Democrats. The political work is “hard to define both legally, and on campaigns, in payment systems, and it’s just a new world that’s ever, ever evolving – and it gets messy.”

Nearly 50 million Gen Z members will be eligible to vote this November, according to Tufts University’s Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, making it a critical base to win for both parties. Generation Z, known by its shorthand Gen Z, is a term used to describe those born from 1997-2012.

After President Donald Trump and Republicans made significant inroads with young voters in 2024 through their dominance of nontraditional media, content creators and experts say Democrats are expanding their work with influencers and attracting a growing universe of social media personalities. Meanwhile, Republicans are forging ahead with an already successful playbook.

“Whether we like it or not, influencers are not going away, and they play a big, big role in how we make sense of politics,” said Jess Rauchberg, a Seton Hall University professor who studies digital culture. “I think at this point we can say influencers also sell us politics.”

But embarking on professional political influencing means navigating a new media industry with few regulations, a dizzying array of payment structures and ever-changing political relationships, according to nearly a dozen influencers who spoke with CNN. “Authenticity” is paramount. Whether to disclose payments, which can undermine that authenticity, is subject to debate.

Not all popular political influencers turn content creation into a livelihood – for some it becomes an added source of income on top of more conventional professions or simply remains a leisure activity.

For Harry Sisson, it’s become a full-time job in the six years since he started posting election content.

Now 23, Sisson wasn’t even old enough to cast a ballot when he began posting on social media to influence the Democratic vote with videos touting then-President Joe Biden.

“I was in my basement during Covid, like any other teenager,” he recalls. Everything was shut down, “so I was scrolling on social media and I saw you know, other young people talking about politics, talking about Joe Biden and Donald Trump. And I just thought I could do it too.”

Two million TikTok followers later, top Democrats court his time, and he has even caught the attention of Trump, who posted an AI video last year depicting him dumping sewage from a plane on Sisson and other protesters at a No Kings rally.

Now, Sisson wakes up to“immediately scroll the news” to look for things to post for his YouTube channel, TikTok, and Instagram; “the whole nine yards.” His management company vets his appearances and like other popular influencers, his personal life has been scrutinized. In March 2025, he faced grilling from UK broadcaster Piers Morgan after being accused of allegedly pressuring multiple women to sext him. (Sisson has apologized for his behavior but denied wrongdoing.)

An even earlier pioneer, CJ Pearson, a well-known conservative influencer, recounts an oft-told story of how he started posting political content in 2015, at age 12, after getting a camcorder for Christmas. Already interested in politics, he’d “never made a YouTube video before in my life” when he decided to record himself passionately discussing his support for Rudy Giuliani and criticizing then-President Barack Obama. He hit publish and “got 2 million views overnight.”

A cardinal rule for success, according to those with years of industry experience, is to let go and “let creators cook,” as Pearson put it.

“If you have a script, buy an ad, if you want a story, hire an influencer,” quipped Comstock, who now has some 2 million followers across TikTok and Instagram.

Some political partnerships work better than others. “There are totally some Democrats out there who are very particular,” Sisson said. “They want to know questions ahead of time, what the format is going to be. They want to see a final cut and things like that,” which can rather diminish the authenticity that leads to success.

Comstock told CNN that in her experience, making political content has its risks – it can alienate consumer brands that pay some of these influencers for nonpolitical content. After posting in support of Harris, she didn’t get a brand deal for six months, she said: Some brands said her content “no longer align with our values,” Comstock said.

However, Aidan Kohn-Murphy, another left-leaning creator, noted that from his experience, making political content has become less risky in recent years. For some, “we’re reaching crazy sums of money,” he said.

Pay is one of the thorniest issues in the influencing game.

In a typical paid gig, a campaign will contact creators or their agents (many of them have management) to propose “deliverables,” which could be appearances at events or videos posted to TikTok or Instagram.

A deal could be straightforward – a set fee for service – or become quite complicated. One of the most common payment arrangements for political campaigns is to pay a consultancy or media management company that then contracts influencers.

One company backed by Democratic donors pays stipends for what it calls “pro-democracy” creators to post more and thereby grow audience.

Political financing for content creators “is just growing by leaps,” according to Saurav Ghosh, the director of federal campaign finance reform at Campaign Legal Center, a watchdog group.

Yet there are very few guardrails and little transparency.

Not all posted political content is paid, but posters are not federally required to disclose if they have been given money by a campaign or outside source for a piece of political content.

Many creators who post in support of candidates also do so for specific causes or industries, but do not have to register as lobbyists. And it is hard to track the source and amount of money being paid to them.

“The lack of a clear legal requirement means that influencers are sometimes going to provide a disclaimer (about being paid), and sometimes they’re not,” Ghosh said. “So voters who are seeing that kind of content are left to fend for themselves as far as transparency goes.”

Creators who spoke to CNN revealed some of their payment arrangements.

When a marketing company hired by a pro-Kamala Harris PAC contracted Comstock, the pay depended on a prize structure. Winning the “best messaging” or “most views” against other content got you $2,500, she told CNN.

Although she sometimes discloses paid work, the post for which she won the $2,500 is not marked as paid content — she argued it was unnecessary since no one dictated the script, and the pay was not explicitly for the video but for reaching lots of people.

Though he shared that one Planned Parenthood campaign paid him $800 for a post, and that he considers even $1,000 to $2,000 a modest sum for a post, Sisson told CNN several of his deals are subject to nondisclosure agreements. Asked whether this meant he could not disclose how much he was paid or who was paying, he said it depended on the NDA, which he asserted was standard in the industry. He discloses paid partnerships with consumer brands – but CNN could not find any content disclosed as paid for by Planned Parenthood on Sisson’s social media feeds.

In April, Pearson filed paperwork under the Foreign Agents Registration Act after he was hired by the government of the Bahamas. Other work he has done, such an endorsement for solar energy, tags the energy group but remains unmarked as paid. He argues that his work is not lobbying, but“educating my audience about issues that I already care about.”

“I’m not calling, you know, members of Congress and saying, ‘Hey, let’s get this passed. Let’s make this happen,’” he said. Organizations paying him “support the work I’m already doing.”

The lack of rules and clarity can invite conspiracy, with the political influencing world frequently bubbling up with rumors or controversy over supposed puppet masters pulling the strings.

Some are not true. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told I get paid by the DNC (Democratic National Committee),” says Sisson. “My response is: I’d love to be paid by the DNC, that’d be great,” he said.

But both Sisson and the DNC told CNN the committee has never paid the influencer.

Some turn out to be a source of embarrassment – such as when talking points from the American Beverage Association that were given to a conservative influencer management company, Influenceable, were leaked. Several influencers who made the posts apologized for the inauthenticity of the endorsements.

And some situations raise uncomfortable questions. For example, in 2024, the US Justice Department indicted two Russian operatives behind Tenet Media, alleging that the company, which worked with Republican-aligned influencers to produce videos on its accounts on different social media platforms, was being secretly funded by Russian money to promote pro-Kremlin propaganda. The operatives were never arrested, but Tenet Media accounts stopped releasing videos after the indictment.

And last year, Chorus, a nonprofit that has sought to recruit and train left-leaning influencers, became the subject of intense controversy following accusations that it was receiving funding from the Sixteen Thirty Fund,a leading hub of so-called “dark” money for liberal groups that is not required to disclose its donors. The group is under investigation by a Republican-led House committee, which Chorus and other supporters have called politically motivated. Chorus told CNN that the Sixteen Thirty Fund set up legal and administrative support when it first launched and it has not received funding from the group..

Ashley St. Clair, a former MAGA social media star turned critic of the movement and the Republican Party, says she sees a predatory quality to the industry.

“Not only does it bastardize the audience, but it also corrupts the people that you’re paying,” she said. “It is a very tough economy. It’s hard for people to say no to money, and so to put them in that position where now they have to, they’re offered an opportunity that could help feed their family. I don’t think that’s right.”

Yet the lines between paid speech and volunteer advocacy, sincerity and sales, politicking and mere posting have just been getting blurrier all the time, not least because, content creators say, often the most effective political influencing is not to talk about politics at all.

As an example, “President Trump would go on (podcasts) Theo Von and Andrew Schultz, and he wouldn’t talk about politics. He would talk about his cool stories from being, like, the king of Manhattan, and he would talk about the crazy cool life that he’s led,” said Pearson, contrasting what he saw as Trump’s savvy in wholly embracing nontraditional media with Harris’s hesitancy to do so during the 2024 election.

In 2026, Democrats, who influencers and political analysts say have been on the back foot, are waking up more to the wider world of what could make for effective messaging.

“A lot of the times there’s an over index (on the left) on focusing on content creators that only cover politics, and I think it’s important for us to have people who are talking about culture and lifestyle have a seat at the table as well too,” said Lauren Kapp, a veteran of the Harris campaign who now runs Luminary Strategies, a Gen Z-led digital firm that handles social media for campaigns, political figures and organizations.

“There’s so many different stories you can tap to platforms people already have,” said Comstock. A single mother who posts content, for example, is “a really interesting surrogate, because I’m sure she’s been uniquely impacted by childcare costs, by health care costs, by all these different things.”

Those kinds of voices reflect the experience of everyday life, expressed online, that both sides are trying to capture.

“I think Democrats and Republicans both know now that if you lose online culture, you lose the election,” says Brilyn Hollyhand, a college student and conservative influencer with roughly 422,000 followers on Instagram.

“(By) culture, I don’t mean your focus groups or your political volunteers or the ones that follow every political account possible,” he said. “I mean the ones that maybe just follow me because they sit by me in class and they know nothing else about politics.”

That’s who he is talking to when he makes political content, he said.

India’s education minister steps down after weeks of protests led by “Cockroach” party

    2026-07-25T07:38:11-0400 / CBS News

India’s education minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday after weeks of protests that demanded his removal over alleged leaks in some of the country’s most competitive entrance exams and irregularities in the education system.

Pradhan announced the decision in a post on X, handing a major victory to the “Cockroach” movement, which has spearheaded nationwide demonstrations, sit-ins and hunger strikes. His resignation also marks the first significant concession by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to one of the most visible waves of public dissent it has faced in recent years.

The movement began more than a month ago after allegations of leaks in some of India’s biggest entrance exams. It started as a call for education reforms but has grown into a broader protest over unemployment, government accountability and economic opportunities. Students, professionals, families and activists have joined rallies in New Delhi and other cities across India.

News of Pradhan’s resignation sparked celebrations among the thousands of protesters who have camped at New Delhi’s protest site for more than a month. Many embraced each other and waved the Indian flag.

Prachi Kumar, a corporate employee who joined the protests, said Pradhan’s resignation was necessary to restore accountability in the education system.

“This had to be done. Someone must be held accountable,” she said.

The Cockroach Janta Party, which launched the protest movement, declared victory following the resignation, writing on X: “DEMOCRACY WINS!”

The demonstrations have become one of the most persistent challenges to Modi’s government in recent years, with thousands returning to the streets even after police used tear gas and batons to disperse marchers.

Tensions escalated on Monday when police moved to disperse thousands of protesters marching toward Parliament. Several students were injured in the crackdown, intensifying anger among demonstrators.

Modi’s government had earlier sought to ease tensions by announcing fast-track courts for cases involving exam paper leaks and saying it would introduce legislation to strengthen measures against cheating and corruption in the examination system.

The measures failed to satisfy protesters, who said they did not address government accountability. Although Pradhan’s resignation met their main demand, the movement leaders said their campaign would continue as they sought compensation for families of students who died by suicide after alleged exam paper leaks and action against police officers they accused of using excessive force.

“Remember, do not mess with (the) cockroach,” Abhijeet Dipke, a movement leader, said in a written statement.
