    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/40588acd-ec3a-4716-a1e1-98d62433ee5d

William Shatner and daughter Melanie recall fighting stage 4 cancer together: “We would survive”

William Shatner and his daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, are opening up about a terrifying journey they shared together — battling stage 4 cancer at the same time.

The Star Trek icon explained three years ago he had a lump that a doctor told him was a salivary gland — but after a month the lump started to grow so he asked a friend who was a doctor to examine it.

He was told it needed to be removed, which was also confirmed by an oncologist.

“It had spread to my brain,” Shatner said. “There were little points of light in my brain and little points of light … I think in my lung.”

The diagnosis was stage 4 malignant melanoma.

    “You need to check again”

Nearly a year before Shatner, now 95 years old, was diagnosed, his daughter found a lump on her breast. Shatner Gretsch said her doctor initially did not find anything concerning on her ultrasound, but she said she knew something was wrong.

“Something just said, ‘You need to check again,’” she recalled.

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/40588acd-ec3a-4716-a1e1-98d62433ee5d

The father and daughter both said Shatner Gretsch would have died if she didn’t question the initial results.

“It was a super aggressive kind of breast cancer, and it had already escaped the breast wall and had gone into my chest,” Shatner Gretsch explained.

She underwent months of chemotherapy, 30 rounds of radiation, a double mastectomy and a year of immunotherapy while leaning on her father for support.

The 61-year-old recalled one night in particular when she reached out to her dad, saying, “I was just in one of those moments where you want your daddy, you know, like you’re little, you’re feeling very little and you’re feeling this is really scary.”

Shatner Gretsch called her dad “a source of calm” for her.

“He got out of bed and drove over here, gave me the bear hug,” she said. “He said to me, ‘This is just a blip in your life. You’re going to get past this.’”

    “Somehow we would survive”

Through their emotional journey, Shatner Gretsch remembers getting her first clear PET scan early on and calling her dad.

“It was the third time I heard you cry in my whole life,” she told him.

For Shatner, he said it’s his instinct and intuition as a father to protect.

“Here was something I couldn’t protect and then I didn’t need to protect, she was going to be all right,” he said.

Both are now cancer-free and sharing their journey on a new podcast, “No Time But Now,” that premieres Wednesday and focuses on medicine, science and spirituality.

“I always felt that somehow we would survive,” Shatner said.

He told CBS News he chose not to disclose his diagnosis originally because he was afraid it would impact his ability to find work and he loves what he does.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris backed Democratic Maine U.S. Senate candidate Troy Jackson.

“I know what it is like to step up to the plate with a short runway to Election Day. Troy will have just 101 days between his nomination for Senate and when voters in Maine will cast their ballots,” Harris said in a Monday fundraising email.

Harris was tapped as the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee after incumbent President Joe Biden dropped out in the wake of a widely-panned debate performance against then-former President Donald Trump.

    2026-07-28T13:31:09.667Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/28/politics/anthony-fauci-diary-rand-paul

Diary entries, a subpoena and an anticipated clash: Dr. Anthony Fauci and Rand Paul’s long-running battle returns to the Hill

    2026-07-28T13:31:09.667Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/28/politics/anthony-fauci-diary-rand-paul

Even before the US enacted a national shutdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Anthony Fauci pondered whether he might have testified before Congress more than any other official.

As the longtime face of the government’s infectious disease response, he was on Capitol Hill roughly 250 times over the course of his career to discuss threats such as the HIV/AIDS crisis and Ebola.

On Wednesday, the retired scientist will notch one more testimony, in what is expected to be a combative hearing before the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee.

The appearance will mark the latest showdown with Sen. Rand Paul, the committee’s chairman, who has long sought to blame the Covid pandemic and shortcomings of the US response on Fauci.

Fauci did not agree to turn up willingly. In June,Paul subpoenaed the 85-year-old former head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for his appearance.

Internal correspondence shared with CNN shows that Fauci initially declined to appear voluntarily, citing his past clashes with Paul and the senator’s efforts to indict him.

“Your request that Dr. Fauci appear before the Committee arises within a context that cannot be ignored — the context of repeated public and absolutely baseless pronouncements by you, a sitting United States Senator, that Dr. Fauci should be prosecuted and jailed,” his lawyers wrote in a letter to Paul.

Ahead of the hearing, the committee released more than 1,100 pages of Fauci’s personal diary from 2019 to 2022. Health and Human Services secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Monday night on Fox News that he had recently handed the files over to Paul and Wisconsin GOP Sen. Ron Johnson after finding them on government servers following an eight-month search.

Neither HHS nor Paul’s committee alerted Fauci ahead of time that they had obtained his diary and that they planned to publish it in full, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The entries documented his frequent media appearances and growing fame, shining a light on his interactions with celebrities and dozens of members of the news media, including some CNN journalists.

The diary entries also narrate Fauci’s growing concerns about Covid-19, frustrations with the government response and conflicting relationships with both Trump and Biden administration officials.

Paul’s intense focus on discrediting Fauci has taken a toll on him, according to people familiar with the scientist. The long-running probe has forced Fauci to continue defending his actions well into retirement, while fueling further conspiracies theories about him and deepening distrust in the broader public health establishment.

The GOP fixation on Fauci also disrupted the careers of those closest to him; amid a Trump administration purge of federal health officials last year, Fauci’s wife was fired from her job at the National Institutes of Health, and at least three of his former longtime colleagues at the agency were reassigned.

“Nobody would want this. But I’ve known him for a very long time and we both use the phrase ‘Brooklyn strong’ quite a bit,” said Peter Staley, an AIDS activist and longtime friend of Fauci. “He’ll get through this,” he added. “He’s got all the facts on his side.”

    Sen. Paul’s demands

Paul and Fauci have clashed repeatedly over the years about the origins of Covid-19, Fauci’s guidance on shutdowns and allegations that Fauci instructed NIAID staff on corresponding through private channels to avoid public records gained through Freedom of Information Act requests.

Since the early days of the pandemic, the senator has accused Fauci of greenlighting controversial research to make viruses more contagious and virulent, mostly as a means of better understanding their spread and how to treat them, known as gain-of-function research. Paul has alleged, without evidence, that NIAID-funded studies in Wuhan, China, used gain-of-function research and led to the coronavirus pandemic.

Fauci has repeatedly denied this both before the senator and in his diary entries.

An analysis of viruses used in the Wuhan lab “clearly indicate(s) that it is molecularly impossible for the viruses under the auspices of the NIH grant to have been manipulated into or evolved into SARS-Cov-2,” he wrote in July 2021.

Paul has previously called for Fauci to be indicted for denying that the US government funded of gain-of-function research in China, which Paul characterizes as a lie. Fauci has maintained that US-funded studies did not meet the federal government’s definition of the restricted research.

This pressure from Paul and others led President Joe Biden to preemptively pardon Fauci during his last days in office, shielding Fauci from charges pertaining to any comments made in previous years.

Paul could attempt to renew calls for perjury charges based on the scientist’s remarks in the Wednesday hearing.

“If he lies during the hearing, that’s a new lie, and the pardon won’t cover that,” Paul said during his interview with Fox Business on July 15.

Yet despite new access to Fauci’s realtime thoughts throughout the pandemic, Paul and Johnson have both sought to manage expectations that the hearing will produce any major new developments.

“(I) don’t expect to get much out of him,” Johnson told Fox News last week. “But I’m going to try and lay out all the things that he did that were such a miserably failed response to Covid.”

Dozens of diary entries made public by the committee show Fauci’s growing concerns about the coronavirus threat and increasing internal conflicts about the government response.

Fauci referenced long calls and conversations with Trump in which they would discuss the Covid-19 response and the president’s messaging.

“Big surprise was at 10:35 PM tonight I got a phone call at home from President Trump who wanted to chat about the coronavirus situation in general,” he wrote on February 27 , 2020. He urged the president not to underplay the seriousness of the virus but noted that he did just that the next day.

In July 2020, he and other officials explained to the president in an Oval Office meeting that vaccines would not be ready before the presidential election in November.

“He accepted that the vaccine might not be ready before the election, but he was not happy about it. He kept pushing about when therapy would be ready,” Fauci wrote.

But fractures in their relationship were forming, as Fauci noted days later.

“The POTUS is playing a weird game of acting Okay with me in person and saying that our relationship is fine to the press and then retweeting stuff that attacks me. He is a very strange guy,” Fauci wrote on July 28, 2020.

In other entries, Fauci noted Trump nearly “begging” Fauci and other Coronavirus Task Force members to end shutdown measures and yelling at officials such as Dr. Deborah Birx, coordinator of the task force, that shutdowns were ruining the economy and his reelection efforts.

“Trump getting out of control in pushing to open up the country and get the economy back before election day. He is desparate (sic). This is all about re-election,” Fauci wrote in May 2020.

The diary also indicates that Fauci believed administration officials were blocking his media appearances, particularly when his message fell out of line with Trump’s narrative. Fauci and Trump denied early in the pandemic that the administration was limiting his media appearances, but by the summer, the tension had grown.

A Health and Human Services spokesperson at the time “told me that I am being kept off TV (even though they were leaning to approve requests) because of my comment about ‘false narrative’ concerning relying on deaths going down,” he wrote in July 2020.

In other entries, Fauci wrote about Trump’s illness with coronavirus and later Biden’s illness, discussions of booster vaccines and America’s “Covid fatigue.” The diary continued through late 2022, with Fauci mulling in some writing about when he would retire.

In early entries, Fauci made a few brief allusions to people who would years later join Trump’s second administration.

On October 7, 2020, he wrote that then-HHS Secretary Alex Azar met with White House advisor Scott Atlas and “his 3 stooges” who authored the Great Barrington Declaration, a call to end broad shutdown measures. One of those people was Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, now director of the National Institutes of Health.

On April 2, 2020, he fretted that now HHS secretary RFK Jr. was preparing to publish a book about him that “will almost certainly be slanderous.”

The pandemic saw Fauci become a household name, and in his diaries, he regularly marveled at the “media frenzy” and noted with some amusement comics, memorabilia and art depicting him.

“For better or worse, I am becoming an international celebrity. Calls from all over the world,” he wrote in March 2020.

He seemed to revel in the celebrity connections bolstered by his position. In April 2020, reality star Kim Kardashian arranged a Zoom call for him to speak with nearly three dozen actors, singers and athletes, including Demi Lovato and Michael Jordan.

In December 2020, he noted that several celebrities appeared in a video compilation wishing him a happy birthday. “It was very moving,” he wrote.

Earlier that month, Fauci logged that he “received a call from Ethel and Kerry Kennedy explicitly inviting (me) up to Hyannisport for 4th of July weekend. They were so nice over the phone. They said that they loved and admired me and were so please that the Kennedy family could honor me.”

He appeared to monitor how his outreach with celebrities was received, noting in April 2021 that “95%” of comments on an Instagram Live with model and actress Tyra Banks were positive, but “some were really mean and vicious statements about me and Tyra.”

He added, “One person said that Tyra was sexy, but I was even more sexy than she was. She read it and put a big smile on her face and said that she agreed with that but then beautifully and gently shot this down by saying: ‘Dr. Fauci, that is true and my mother is in love with you.’”

At times, celebrities almost treated Fauci as a private physician and confidant. In February 2021, actress and singer Barbra Streisand called him to discuss the safety of mRNA vaccines after a shingles outbreak. They later discussed “life in general,” and Fauci explained the Amazon product Alexa to Streisand by instructing the virtual assistant to play her songs. By October, Streisand was asking about booster shots, and they joked about their mutual Brooklyn accents.

“It is always good to hear from her,” Fauci wrote.

For nearly six years, American conservationist Morad Tahbaz lived in what he described as hell inside Iran’s prison system. The worst four months were spent completely alone in a small cell, beneath a bright light that never went dark.

Tahbaz was held in Ward 2A of Iran’s Evin Prison, which he described as a high-security detention facility controlled by the intelligence branch of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

He was allowed out only twice a day for about 10 minutes and was forced to wear a blindfold whenever he left, Tahbaz told Fox News Digital. His weekly call with his wife lasted only a few minutes and was monitored so closely that an official interrupted whenever he spoke in English.

“This is probably the harshest and toughest imprisonment that any prisoner will go through,” Tahbaz, who was finally released in September 2023, told Fox News Digital of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps intelligence detention facility inside Iran’s Evin Prison.

Tahbaz was living and working in Iran as a conservationist when authorities arrested him alongside several colleagues in January 2018. He had co-founded the Persian Wildlife Heritage Foundation, which worked to protect endangered species including the Asiatic cheetah and Persian leopard.

One of the accusations leveled against him, Tahbaz said, was that he had trained lizards to spy on Iranian military installations for Israel.

“You can’t make this stuff up,” Tahbaz said in the Zoom interview with Fox News Digital. “It just gives you an idea of the kind of narrative that this regime comes up with. They’ll come up with anything.”

What began with interrogations in January 2018 turned into nearly six years of imprisonment for the Iranian American conservationist.

Now free and back in his home in the U.S., Tahbaz fears the war between the United States and Iran could make the Americans still held by Iran both more vulnerable and more valuable as negotiating assets.

“I do think the strikes in Iran will have an impact on the hostages’ situation and their circumstances,” he said.

TRUMP SAYS IRAN WILL PAY — WHAT IT TAKES TO END THE WAR REMAINS UNCLEAR

Tahbaz said he spent his first two years inside the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps intelligence facility at Evin.

After his conviction, Tahbaz was transferred into the general prison population. He said his cellmates ranged from suspected ISIS members to former Iranian government ministers.

The isolation and physical conditions were accompanied by constant uncertainty.

“The uncertainty when you are a hostage is not like you think at the end of your sentence they’ll necessarily let you go,” Tahbaz said. “They’ll just come up with another charge to keep you there for as long as you’re of value to them.”

Tahbaz was released Sept. 18, 2023, with four other Americans in a Qatar-mediated agreement between Washington and Iran. The exchange also involved five Iranians held by the United States and the transfer of $6 billion in previously frozen Iranian funds into a restricted account for humanitarian transactions.

The negotiation brought Tahbaz home, but he believes Western governments have failed to establish consequences strong enough to stop Iran from detaining more foreign and dual nationals.

“This business of hostage-taking has been going on essentially since the beginning of the revolution,” he said.

Freed hostage Morad Tahbaz is surrounded by his family just after landing in the U.S. in September 2023.(Morad Tahbaz)

“It will continue, in my opinion, as long as there is no deterrence,” Tahbaz added. “None of the Western governments, in reality, have done anything significant about stopping this practice.”

The issue returned to the forefront in July with the release of Dena Karari, a 53-year-old Iranian American from California.

Karari had been unable to leave Iran since December 2024 after authorities confiscated her passports. Her attorney said she faced allegations of espionage and collaboration with a hostile state. President Donald Trump announced in July that she had been allowed to leave and called the decision a “gesture of goodwill.”

Karari was not continuously imprisoned, according to reporting about her case, but she remained under an exit ban and was repeatedly interrogated.

Her release offered relief during a widening conflict, but Tahbaz said dual nationals remain particularly vulnerable because Iran does not recognize their foreign citizenship.

“Iran doesn’t recognize any other nationality other than the Iranian,” he said.

Authorities can develop a national-security case, secure a sentence and then preserve the prisoner for use in future negotiations, Tahbaz said.

“You’re condemned, and they pass sentence, and you’re in the system, and now you are a bargaining chip,” he said.

The precise number of Americans currently imprisoned or prevented from leaving Iran remains unclear.

Reuters reported in March that at least six U.S. citizens or permanent residents were detained in Iran, including journalist Reza Valizadeh, businessman Kamran Hekmati and U.S. permanent resident Shahab Dalili.

A view of the entrance of Evin prison in Tehran, Iran Oct. 17, 2022.(Majid Asgaripour/WANA (West Asia News Agency) via Reuters)

Valizadeh, a former Radio Farda journalist, was sentenced to 10 years for allegedly collaborating with a hostile government. Hekmati was sentenced to two years for having visited Israel more than a decade earlier, according to his family. Dalili, who was arrested after traveling to Iran for his father’s funeral, was sentenced to 10 years for allegedly cooperating with a hostile government.

Advocates warned that escalating strikes could increase the risk that detainees would be harmed or used as leverage.

The State Department formally designated Hekmati, who has bladder cancer, as wrongfully detained in March.

Tahbaz said he believes three Americans remain in custody, although that number could not be independently confirmed. Some cases are deliberately kept private because families fear publicity could increase the danger to detainees.

His concerns about the current war are rooted in how Iranian interrogators responded to tensions with Washington during his own imprisonment.

“When I was taken in in January of 2018, and it was right at the beginning of the first Trump administration, the amount of frustration and anger at the rollback of the JCPOA at that time, I mean, it was thrown into my face just about every day of my interrogation in some way, shape or form,” Tahbaz said, referring to a 2015 nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

The United States formally withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, in May 2018, several months after Tahbaz’s arrest.

Tahbaz believes the current conflict could similarly be transferred onto prisoners who have no control over decisions made in Washington.

“It definitely will worsen the case of prisoners in custody and those who may be just under surveillance or potential hostages,” he said.

He described prisoners as one more source of leverage in Iran’s broader confrontation with the United States.

“You’re seeing that playing out even with the war, this tit-for-tat, you do this, we’ll do that,” he said.

“The hostages are, you know, just a commodity from Iran’s perspective, to be used at the right time.”

Tahbaz’s experience with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also shapes his analysis of the struggle unfolding inside Iran.

He stressed that he is not a political analyst and described his conclusions as personal assessments based on his experience and conversations with contacts familiar with the country.

Tahbaz said he believes competing interests within the Revolutionary Guard are fighting to preserve their political and economic power.

He pointed specifically to Khatam al-Anbiya, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ engineering and construction conglomerate. Tahbaz argued that sanctions have benefited powerful IRGC-linked entities by forcing oil sales, imports and money transfers into opaque black and gray markets.

“They have created a huge franchise for themselves because of these sanctions,” he said.

“They don’t want to see the sanctions go away, because they will lose their franchise, if you will. They will lose their power, their control over the money and everything that goes along with it.”

He said ordinary Iranians have suffered most from the resulting economic isolation and wartime conditions.

“The people who are hurt most by all of this are the people of Iran,” Tahbaz said. “They’re unfortunately taking the brunt of all of these in their daily lives.”

Tahbaz predicted Iranians would eventually return to the streets, but said many had lost confidence that Western governments would intervene to help remove the regime.

“I’m sure they’ll be back on the streets,” he said. “But I think this notion that the Western states are going to step in and help them overthrow this regime, that went out the window.”

Tahbaz said many Iranians had previously been strongly sympathetic toward the United States and initially hoped the conflict might end the Islamic Republic. That characterization reflects his assessment and conversations and could not be independently quantified.

He believes any future political movement will have to develop primarily inside Iran rather than being directed by opposition groups abroad.

“There’s a lot of hatred and anger just boiling there,” Tahbaz said. “So it will boil up and over again without a doubt. The question is when, how, but it will happen again.”

Tahbaz is recounting his imprisonment in his new book, “Green Parrots: A Memoir of Survival in Iran’s Evin Prison,” scheduled for publication Sept. 29. The publisher says the book describes how he relied on skills developed while tracking endangered wildlife to survive nearly six years in Evin, including solitary confinement.

His release illustrates the contradiction confronting governments trying to recover their citizens: negotiations can bring individual prisoners home, but Tahbaz believes the broader practice will continue unless Iran faces meaningful deterrence for taking them.

He survived because governments ultimately negotiated for his freedom.

His warning is that as the war intensifies, the Americans still held in Iran could become more valuable to Tehran at precisely the moment their circumstances become more dangerous.

As Washington, D.C., prepares to say its final goodbyes to the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, his last legislative crusade is inching closer to the finish line.

Graham, who died suddenly at the age of 71 earlier this month, will begin the first part of his final journey home to South Carolina in Washington on Tuesday, when lawmakers and world leaders will gather to pay tribute to the longtime lawmaker.

He will get two celebrations of his life in Washington on Tuesday, first in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol in the morning and then at a private funeral service at the National Cathedral.

The services in Washington, D.C., which will be followed by funeral services in Graham’s home state of South Carolina, will close the loop on a life in politics that saw the longtime lawmaker grow from humble beginnings behind his parents’ bar to becoming a leader in national security concerns and foreign policy.

His impact on the world stage will draw several to the services in Washington, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The latter is set to speak with lawmakers Tuesday morning as the Senate prepares to move on Graham’s passion project: inflicting bone-crushing sanctions on Russia in response to the war in Ukraine.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., quoted Graham in relaying the significance of the sanctions package moving forward and the impact it would have on his legacy.

“To quote Senator Graham, ‘It’s a big effing deal. We all did well. We all did good,’” Blumenthal told Fox News Digital. “Those were among the last comments he made to me. Neither of us knowing, you know, that he was going to pass, but it is a profoundly significant part of his legacy.”

“It’s a huge achievement for him,” he continued. “And I’m very proud to be, you know, his partner in that effort.”

Blumenthal and a growing bipartisan group of senators have revamped the legislation once more, including changing the name to honor Graham, a move pushed by his sister and newly appointed Sen. Darline Graham, R-S.C.

But the work is not done, he said.

“It’s going to be a very important part of his legacy, and it is a tribute, a fitting and appropriate tribute to him,” Blumenthal said. “I hope it passes. We’re not there yet.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., teed up the sanctions package, which now includes sanctions against Iran, for a vote last week. Lawmakers are expected to get a chance to move the legislation through a key procedural hurdle Tuesday night, hours after Graham’s service at the National Cathedral.

Thune, who has spoken with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and expected Democrats to buy into the package, was hopeful that the first challenge would go well, but acknowledged that there were some lawmakers who had issues with the bill.

“I hope to, you know, the motion to get on it will be a very big bipartisan vote,” Thune said. “And if it is, I think that will at least set up a path to get it done.”

Many of the core aspects of the legislation, which had its own stops and starts on its journey through the Senate, are the same: sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russian officials and Russian military leaders, up to 500% tariffs on Russian imports, tariffs of up to 100% on countries buying Russian energy, like China and India.

It also gives President Donald Trump flexibility for when to turn off some aspects of the sanctions.

Key changes to the newly unveiled package include adding a “national interest certification” for Trump’s sanction waiver authority and incorporating sanctions on the myriad ships and tankers that comprise Russia’s “shadow fleet” hauling energy exports under the radar.

Passing the sanctions package would, as Blumenthal noted, be emblematic of Graham’s career in Washington.

And Rep. William Timmons, R-S.C., who grew to become a close friend of Graham’s, recalled the dozens of rounds of golf the pair played together in an interview with Fox News Digital shortly after Graham’s death.

He remembered Graham as someone who, if he considered you a friend, always encouraged you to keep going. It was service to the country, however, that was his prime focus, Timmons said.

“I just think that he was very much singularly focused on public service, whether it was the military or in Congress or as a senator,” Timmons said. “It literally was his entire life.”
