Once thought doomed, President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Justice Department has survived the Senate and now will take the helm as the nation’s top law enforcement official.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche was confirmed early Saturday morning as part of a mad blitz by lawmakers to wrap up their work and jet from Washington, D.C. Now, he’ll officially replace Pam Bondi as attorney general.

Blanche, who is Trump’s former personal lawyer, nearly saw his confirmation hopes go up in smoke as Republicans struggled to swallow his role in rolling out the nearly $2 billion anti-weaponization and sweeping IRS audit immunity for the president and his family.

However, a last-minute ally emerged: Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., who announced on Friday that he would back Blanche’s confirmation after spending days keeping tight-lipped on his decision.

Though he was concerned about weaponization at the Department of Justice (DOJ) and just how binding an agreement to nix the anti-weaponization fund and limit Trump’s audit immunity would be, he argued that having a Senate-confirmed attorney general was a better option than a placeholder.

“Mr. Blanche is not perfect, and he will tell you this,” Cassidy said on the Senate floor. “But the choice is not between perfection and Mr. Blanche. It is between Mr. Blanche and another acting attorney general, who may not run the department effectively under President Trump.”

Still, Sens. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, and Susan Collins, R-Maine, joined all Senate Democrats to oppose Blanche’s confirmation.

Murkowski announced her opposition hours before Cassidy’s lifeline. She contended that despite Blanche’s trek to Alaska and numerous meetings with him, she could not support him to be the next attorney general.

She was worried about his connection to the anti-weaponization fund, a weaponized Justice Department, Blanche’s role in the Epstein Files release, and the uncertain future of the fund, which several Republicans have raised concerns about over whether taxpayer dollars would flow to rioters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

“The country needs an Attorney General who will check the worst impulses of this administration,” Murkowski said. “I hope Mr. Blanche is able to achieve that, if confirmed, but I simply do not have confidence that will be the case.”

Collins raised similar concerns earlier in the week, and was the first Republican out of the gate to cast doubt on Blanche’s chances of confirmation.

“While I believe Mr. Blanche is a capable lawyer, the Department of Justice has become increasingly political,” Collins said. “Mr. Blanche has taken several actions that have further eroded the Department’s independence, and that is the basis for my vote to oppose his confirmation.”

Democrats plan Trump investigations over impeachment if they win House, sources say

WASHINGTON, Aug 8 (Reuters) – U.S. House Democrats preparing for a possible return to power are developing a broad investigative strategy targeting companies and financial firms surrounding President Donald Trump, instead of trying to impeach him immediately, according to four people familiar with the discussions.

Senior Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives and committee aides have discussed using hearings, subpoenas and document requests to obtain records from entities tied to Trump’s political and business orbit, the sources said. It is a bet that investigating private companies and outside financial players will prove more fruitful than directly confronting a White House they expect to resist oversight, they said.

The approach reflects both Democratic caution and a lesson many in the party say they learned during Trump’s first term: that impeachment proceedings can consume Congress while allowing Trump to cast himself as the victim of a partisan campaign.

Instead, Democrats involved in the planning envision using House investigative powers after November’s midterm elections to scrutinize the administration’s decision-making and examine whether Trump used his power to benefit himself, allies or donors.

“We’re not going into this to impeach,” said a senior Democratic aide, describing the thinking among party leaders and committee staff. “No one wants a failed vote on day one. The focus is on building a body of evidence through investigations that can hold Trump accountable.”

Republicans hold a narrow House majority, and polls favor Democrats regaining the majority in November. Winning control would give Democrats the power to issue subpoenas, compel testimony and documents, hold public hearings and pursue contempt proceedings.

Democrats expect the White House to fight or ignore requests aimed at the executive branch, making companies, contractors and financial firms working with the administration an important route for obtaining information, the sources said.

The White House said in a statement that Trump has worked to thwart the “radical left’s agenda” and remains committed to preserving Republican majorities in Congress. A White House official said the administration is “prepared to respond to oversight requests, no matter who is in the House or Senate.”

Three sources said Apple (AAPL.O), Alphabet (GOOGL.O), Palantir (PLTR.O), Blackstone (BX.N), BlackRock and companies owned by Elon Musk, such as Tesla (TSLA.O), have surfaced in discussions because of their contracts, regulatory exposure or administration dealings. The sources said no final target list has been established and no formal investigations have begun.

The sources provided no further details about the investigations. Reuters could not determine if they face any accusations of wrongdoing.

Alphabet, Palantir, Blackstone and BlackRock declined comment. Apple and Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.

Democrats are expected to examine Department of Homeland Security contracts, financing for Trump’s planned White House ballroom, corporate donors and alleged pay-to-play arrangements, two sources said. They also plan a probe of Trump-linked financial vehicles including 1789 Capital – a venture capital firm where his son Donald Trump Jr. is a partner – and foreign sovereign wealth funds whose investments in Trump family-linked entities could raise questions about administration influence, the sources said.

1789 Capital did not respond to a request for comment.

Because foreign funds may be harder for congressional committees to reach, Democrats are discussing seeking records from U.S.-based firms and funds tied to Trump’s family and other intermediaries, the two sources said.

LAYING THE GROUNDWORK

Democrats have already begun laying the groundwork for investigations, two of the sources said.

Party leaders are sending letters to companies, contractors and other organizations connected to potential investigations, they said. The requests seek records and pave the way for subpoenas if Democrats win the House, the two sources said.

Representatives Robert Garcia from California and Jamie Raskin from Maryland, the top Democrats on the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees, respectively, said existing investigations would expand if Democrats win the House.

“From sketchy Pentagon contracts lining the pockets of the president’s sons, Trump’s crypto billions, and the shady backroom deals for Trump donors, we will ensure we combat corruption when Democrats take back the House in November,” Garcia said in a statement.

The letters include requests for information from media company Paramount Skydance over its dealings with the Trump administration and the proposed Warner Bros. Discovery deal as well as video platform YouTube and parent company Alphabet (GOOGL.O) over the company’s $24.5 million settlement with Trump in September. Letters have also been sent to private prison operator GEO Group and security firm Salus Worldwide Solutions for their contracts with the DHS as well as commodity traders Vitol and Trafigura over the administration’s sale of Venezuelan oil, the two sources said.

Alphabet and Trafigura declined comment. The others did not respond to requests for comment.

The companies can ignore the requests while Democrats are in the minority. But the letters put potential targets on notice and signal records Democrats could subpoena, the two sources said.

IMPEACHMENT NOT FIRST MOVE

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in June on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that Democrats haven’t ruled out impeaching Trump if they win back the House but that the party’s focus would be on pocketbook issues.

Democrats involved in the planning say impeachment remains an option if investigations uncover evidence of an impeachable offense, but not as a first move.

The calculation reflects the party’s experience during Trump’s first term, when he became the first U.S. president to be impeached twice by the House before being acquitted by the Senate each time.

“If investigations uncover evidence that we believe meets the threshold, we will not hesitate to move forward,” said the senior Democratic aide.

Blanche confirmed as attorney general at a Justice Department shaped to serve Trump

Todd Blanche, who risked his career as a prestigious member of New York’s legal establishment to keep Donald Trump out of jail, was confirmed on Saturday as the attorney general.

Blanche, 52, will now permanently act as the nation’s top law enforcement officer under the leadership of his former client.

He was confirmed by a vote of 50 to 49 with GOP Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski voting with Democrats against the nomination.

Since Trump re-entered the Oval Office, Blanche has been instrumental in reshaping the department in the president’s image, effectively switching from being the face of Trump’s defense to the face of his far-reaching retribution campaign.

He put forth legal arguments that expand the powers and protection around the presidency, oversaw the mass firings of experienced prosecutors and longtime officials, and spearheaded a legal strategy that has made judges across the nation question the department’s decisions.

And in just the few months since he was appointed acting attorney general, the Justice Department has brought indictments against political figures, including former FBI Director James Comey, issued subpoenas seeking to identify journalists’ sources, created — then abandoned — the controversial anti-weaponization fund, and approved a tax immunity deal between the president and the Internal Revenue Service.

But Blanche has been running the day-to-day operations of the department for far longer than that, and his nomination formalized what had already been the case internally for a while. CNN previously reported that even as deputy attorney general, Blanche often led meetings, including those that the attorney general was supposed to oversee.

That central role became especially consequential in one of the administration’s most volatile sagas, the Epstein files aftermath.

At one point, former Attorney General Pam Bondi was sent into a weekslong media lockdown for repeatedly bungling her television appearances discussing the Epstein matter. Blanche took her place, and, according to Bondi, continued to manage the crisis by himself.

Sources have told CNN that Blanche will have a similar strategy once officially confirmed — bringing cases that highlight what the president claims were instances of Justice Department “weaponization” against him, his allies and supporters.

He will also push forward other administration priorities, like hardline immigration cases and a crackdown on fraud involving government programs.

Blanche worked for years as a federal prosecutor before entering private practice about a decade ago. When he took Trump on as client in 2023, he stepped down from the white-shoe New York law firm, Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft,where he was a partner.

Trump was facing several criminal cases at the time.

Blanche’s decision in April of that year to join Trump’s legal team surprised those around him, according to multiple people familiar. He was registered to vote as a Democrat and those who know him say he did not wear his politics on his sleeve. Known as a hard-working lawyer who loved being a prosecutor, some of his former colleagues were surprised to see him take on the role and echo the rhetoric of his client. As recently as this week,some former colleagues were still baffled and trying to analyze Blanche’s transformation.

But the gamble paid off handsomely.

Quickly,Blanche became Trump’s go-to attorney to navigate three federal indictments.

Blanche was one of a select few who sat beside and advised Trump during his hush-money criminal trial in New York, when the president’s freedom was at stake. He weaved Trump’s gripes into legal briefs and adopted his arguments before the judge, drawing rebukes at times.

Although Trump was convicted, Blanche’s legal tactics helped delay Trump’s sentencing until after the election —effectively ensuring he would not serve prison time.

In a federal case accusing Trump of election interference, the Trump defense team won at the Supreme Court to expand protections from criminal prosecution for the president just before Trump won his second term. Blanche and his team also convinced a Trump-appointed judge in Florida to throw out charges in a second federal case accusing him of mishandling classified documents.

As rumors swirled that his work for Trump could land Blanche a job in the administration, Blanche told allies that he was not interested in a government job, sources told CNN at the time.

Still, he was nominated by Trump to serve as the Justice Department’s number two. At the time, Trump wrote on social media that Blanche will fix “what has been a broken System of Justice for far too long.”

Once in the job, sources say that Blanche immediately eyed the attorney general spot. His work pleased the president, sources told CNN, particularly as he became increasingly frustrated with Blanche’s predecessor, Bondi. When she was fired,Blanche seamlessly slipped into the job, even moving into Bondi’s old office the first week she was gone.

“This is exactly what he’s been waiting for,” one department official said of his confirmation.

Blanche’s path to confirmation was far from smooth. He spent weeks trying to get into the good graces of senators whose votes were crucial to his success, but some of his efforts were futile.

His struggle to align Republican lawmakers was most obvious with Sen. Lisa Murkowski. Despite a two-day trip to her home state of Alaska, reaching two settlements and two lawsuits, and awarding more than $6 million in grants, Murkowski voted to oppose Blanche.

“The country needs an Attorney General who will check the worst impulses of this administration,” Murkowski said of her decision. “I hope Mr. Blanche is able to achieve that, if confirmed, but I simply do not have confidence that will be the case.”

Blanche also concentrated on Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, who raised concerns about the “weaponization of the Justice Department,” including a probe into Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide and key witness in the congressional investigation of the January 6 Capitol attack.

It is unclear whether the Justice Department will move for an indictment of the ex-aide.

Blanche’s initial vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee was even delayed as he underwent tense talks with Republican Sens. John Cornyn and Thom Tillis, both of whom had concerns about the anti-weaponization fund and the IRS deal.

In the end, Blanche signed one memo that ended the anti-weaponization fund, and released a second, unsigned memo clarifying the terms of the tax-immunity agreement.

Hawaii Rep. Ed Case faces primary challenger and more to watch in today’s races

Hawaii voters go to the polls on Saturday for primaries in the heavily Democratic state, with Rep. Ed Case facing a primary challenger in the 1st District.

Case, 73, has represented the 1st District, which includes Honolulu and other parts of Oʻahu, since 2019, having previously represented the 2nd District, which includes more rural parts of Oʻahu and the other islands, from 2002 to 2007.

He is facing state Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole, who represents Kāneʻohe and Kailua in the state Senate, on Saturday. Keohokalole, 42, told Hawaii Public Radio that he believes now is the time for change in the district, and pointed to Case’s vote for the SAVE America Act in the House.

Case told Hawaii Public Radio that seniority matters in the House, saying “the more you’re here, the more influence you have, the more relationships you have, the more know-how you have, the more experience you have to get things done — as I did in three crises in a row.”

Democratic incumbents in New York and Colorado in safe districts have been ousted so far this year by primary challengers.

Republican Adriel Lam is running unopposed for the Republican nomination.

Hawaii is heavily Democratic, so the winners in Saturday’s primaries are favored to win in November.

Hawaii’s Democratic Gov. Josh Green is facing three challengers on Saturday, none of whom have reported raising or spending any money for the primary, according to Honolulu Civil Beat. Two Republicans are fighting for a place on the ballot in November.

In Hawaii’s 2nd District, Rep. Jill Tokuda is facing three unknown challengers, including one who was arrested in May for pulling a gun on county workers in Maui. Tokuda is expected to sail to victory. GOP state Sen. Brenton Awa, one of only three Republicans in the chamber, is running unopposed for the GOP nomination.

妇女到电影院观赏周星驰新片《功夫女足》，岂料跌倒后陷入昏迷，民防人员通过电话指导公众为她做心肺复苏。

这起事故是于星期五（8月7日）下午3时45分，在位于义顺的嘉华影院（Golden Village）内发生。

热心读者向《新明日报》透露，事发时她正等待电影《功夫女足》开场，突然目击这名妇女跌倒。

读者透露，当时电影尚未放映，妇女跌倒后便失去意识陷入昏迷。在等待救护人员赶到的过程中，现场公众通过电话与民防人员保持通话，并在其指导下协助为妇女实施心肺复苏。

她补充，朋友见状后立即冲上前帮忙，并询问现场是否有人去拿自动体外除颤器（AED）。在得知还没人去取后，朋友便准备亲自前往寻找。

“随后医护人员赶到了现场，我们还看到一名医生迅速跑来，后面紧跟着其他救护人员。”

她透露，医生抵达后尝试将妇女的身体扶正，她的朋友也立刻上前协助。

根据读者提供的照片显示，事发后有数名热心公众在一旁协助救援。

新加坡民防部队受询时证实接获求助通报，随后将伤者送往邱德拔医院救治。

这起车祸发生在星期五（8月7日）晚上约7时50分，地点在武吉知马快速公路往兀兰方向的一处路段。

《新明日报》接获热心读者通报，指兀兰关卡出境交通十分拥堵，上述地点一辆深色本田汽车疑似换车道时与前方白色汽车相撞。

根据读者提供的视频画面，白色汽车尾部严重凹陷，路面上散落许多车身零件。据观察，汽车零件散落一地，一旁可见一只浅色拖鞋。

警方和新加坡民防部队受询时证实接获通报，车祸涉及一辆电单车和两辆汽车。一名27岁男电单车骑士受轻伤但拒绝送院，一名59岁男汽车驾驶员协助调查，案件仍在调查中。
