The United Kingdom unveiled sweeping new measures targeting Israeli settlements in the West Bank on Tuesday, triggering an immediate diplomatic rupture with Israel and a sharp warning from a senior Trump administration official.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced Tuesday, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approval, that Israel would close the British Consulate in Jerusalem and impose a series of countermeasures in response to the UK sanctions.

The Israeli measures also include removing British representatives from the International Gaza Support Center in Kiryat Gat, ending British activities training Palestinian Authority forces in the West Bank and denying entry to 12 British elected officials and other British nationals whom Israel accused of antisemitic or anti-Israel activity.

UK MOVES TO SANCTION ISRAELI SETTLEMENTS AS PM BURNHAM RISKS CLASH WITH TRUMP: REPORT

“Measures against Israel will not go unanswered,” Sa’ar said. “Whoever acts against Israel, Israel will act against them, and they will lose their influence and relevance in the region.”

The escalation came hours after Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told Parliament that Britain would ban imports of goods from Israeli settlements, target companies and individuals facilitating settlement expansion and refuse licenses for arms and other exports that materially contribute to the occupation.

The move is part of a coordinated push with France, Canada and other European partners amid what the governments described Tuesday as “unprecedented levels of settler violence and settlement expansion” in the West Bank, including Israel’s E1 project, which they argue threatens the viability of a future Palestinian state. The measures come just weeks before world leaders gather for the UN General Assembly in New York and less than two months before Israel’s Oct. 27 election, adding diplomatic and political stakes to an already strained relationship between Israel and several of its traditional Western allies.

At the same time, the foreign ministers recognized Israel’s “legitimate security interests” and reiterated their condemnation of Hamas’ Oct. 7 terrorist attack, which they described as “the worst antisemitic massacre since the Holocaust.” They said their objective remained a two-state solution allowing Israel and “a sovereign, democratic and viable Palestinian state” to live side by side in peace and security.

The timing has also become a political issue inside Britain. An unnamed Labour MP told The Telegraph that Prime Minister Andy Burnham had faced pressure from colleagues worried about Gaza-related campaigning and losing seats to the Greens, while Israeli officials have accused London of trying to influence Israel’s election — claims the British government rejects as it frames the measures as an effort to preserve the two-state solution.

“Today, I announce that the official view of the British government is that the occupation is unlawful,” Miliband told lawmakers Tuesday.

Miliband opened the statement by describing himself as a “proud British Jew” with “the deepest gratitude to the State of Israel,” recalling how his grandmother found refuge there after losing her husband and 60 other family members at the hands of the Nazis.

He stressed that the measures were aimed at settlements rather than Israel itself.

“The sanctions regime will target illegal settlement and settlement expansion. Not Israel,” Miliband said, adding that Britain would continue to support trade with Israel inside the Green Line and that he “wholeheartedly” opposed the broader Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.

Miliband also condemned rising antisemitism in Britain, saying, “Holding British Jews responsible for the actions of the Israeli government is anti-Semitism, plain and simple.”

He reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorism, called for Hamas to disarm and dismantle its terrorist infrastructure under the U.S. -led 20-point Gaza plan, and announced sanctions against Hezbollah financing institution Al-Qard Al-Hassan. He also said Britain was reimposing major economic sanctions on Iran and would continue security cooperation with Israel against shared threats.

The measures drew immediate criticism from US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who warned in an interview with BBC World Service Newsday that Britain could face economic repercussions in the United States.

“I think without a doubt there will be,” Huckabee said when asked whether the UK should expect consequences.

Huckabee pointed to Florida and other states with anti-boycott laws, arguing that British companies could face restrictions on doing business there.

“If the Brits do something like this with a partner, Israel, then they will not be able to do business in Florida,” he said, warning of a “huge economic impact on British businesses.”

He also challenged Britain’s policy on substantive grounds, arguing that Israel is permitted under the Oslo agreements to build communities in Area C and predicting that the sanctions would have “a very negative effect that does not meet whatever goal maybe that the Brits have.”

In a separate portion of the BBC interview, Huckabee said, “I feel like that it’s a discrimination against the Israeli government. It’s a discrimination against the Jewish people. And I don’t understand the rationale.”

IS ISRAEL REALLY ISOLATED? POLLS AND DIPLOMACY POINT IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS

Sa’ar also accused London of interfering in Israel’s election campaign and said the settlement sanctions were driven by domestic British politics ahead of the Labour Party conference.

“The British move is morally distorted and constitutes blatant interference in the affairs of a sovereign state and in its electoral process,” he said.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog called Britain’s move a “grave miscalculation” Tuesday and argued that it amounted to “gross interference” in Israel’s upcoming election, according to a statement from his office.

Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, president and founder of the Tel Aviv-based Shurat HaDin-Israel Law Center, also criticized the measures, arguing that their economic impact would be limited while their political consequences could be significant.

“These sanctions are not serious economic policy; they are political theatre staged at Israel’s expense,” Darshan-Leitner told Fox News Digital. She disputed Britain’s legal characterization of the territory, saying, “The territories are disputed, not sovereign Palestinian land, and their future must be negotiated by the parties under the Oslo framework.”

Darshan-Leitner also argued that because little of the roughly $8 billion in annual UK-Israel trade originates in West Bank settlements, the measures would have little direct economic effect while potentially influencing Israel’s political debate ahead of elections.

Miliband, however, argued that failing to act would allow continued settlement expansion to destroy the possibility of a two-state solution. He focused particularly on Israel’s E1 project east of Jerusalem, which Britain and numerous other governments say threatens the territorial viability of a future Palestinian state.

Sa’ar rejected Britain’s position that the E1 settlement project threatens the viability of a future Palestinian state.

The policy has also exposed divisions within Britain.

Conservative lawmaker Tom Tugendhat acknowledged in Parliament that illegal settlements were wrong and that some settlers had committed “outrageous abuses” against Palestinians, but argued that the government’s response risked hurting ordinary Israelis and Palestinians.

“What we reject here is not the intent, but the performative politics,” Tugendhat said, warning against acting without sufficiently broad international support.

Miliband rejected arguments that the measures were intended to isolate Israel.

Oil prices could hit $120, analysis finds, as Americans absorb $100 billion fuel hit

    September 8, 2026 / 10:54 AM EDT / CBS News

Goldman Sachs is warning that heightened attacks in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea could push global oil prices above $120 a barrel, which would add to the surging fuel costs Americans have faced during the Iran war.

The investment bank’s forecast implies a roughly 20% increase in the cost of Brent crude, the international benchmark, which is trading at nearly $100 a barrel. Oil prices have spiked in recent weeks as the Middle East conflict drags on, with U.S. military forces striking three Iranian oil tankers on Saturday and the Houthi rebels attacking Saudi oil facilities.

On Tuesday, the price of Brent briefly climbed to $99.46 a barrel before dipping to $97.85. Over the past two months, Brent has climbed from roughly $72 a barrel as increased fighting in the Middle East erodes hopes of a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that normally carries a fifth of the world’s oil flows.

    $100 billion hit

American consumers spent an additional $100 billion on fuel between the start of the Iran war on Feb. 28 and Sept. 8, according to a tracker from Brown University. Higher gasoline prices accounted for about $55 billion of that amount, while diesel accounted for the remaining $45 billion.

Diesel, which is widely used in the trucking, construction, agriculture and rail sectors, reached a record $5.90 a gallon on Labor Day, AAA data shows.

The increase is squeezing household budgets directly at the pump and indirectly by raising transportation costs for groceries and other retail goods. Inflation remains elevated, with economists forecasting that the next Consumer Price Index report, set to be released on Friday, will show inflation in August rose by 3.3% on an annual basis — well above the Federal Reserve’s annual 2% target.

“This is the time of year that most Americans see gas prices going down as demand falls and we soon change to winter gasoline, but as of late, we’ve been seeing a lot more ups — especially for diesel — the fuel that drives the U.S. economy, and that may continue,” GasBuddy petroleum analyst Patrick De Haan said in a Sept. 7 social media post.

On Thursday, the U.S. government will also release its August report for wholesale inflation, the Producer Price Index, which economists expect will show an acceleration to 5.4% from 4.7% in July.

    Goldman’s base case

Goldman’s forecast is based on an increase in hostilities in the Middle East. The bank’s base case calls for Brent to drop to $85 a barrel by year’s end, with West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. benchmark, settling at about $80 a barrel. Those estimates represent an increase of $5 per barrel from the investment firm’s previous forecast.

“The price upgrade is modest despite the assumption that shipping disruptions continue for two reasons,” which are that commercial fuel inventories in developed countries have barely declined, and that oil shipments from the Middle East should slowly recover, Goldman analysts wrote in the Sept. 7 research report.

The Trump administration expects oil prices to drop below their pre-war levels when the conflict ends. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News on Sunday that the energy supply shock “is going to end.”

“On the other side of this, we actually could see oil prices at $40 or $50 a barrel because there’s so much supply coming on,” Bessent said.

Goldman said that its best-case scenario places Brent in the $60-per-barrel range in 2027, but only if oil production in the Persian Gulf increases by 1 million barrels a day above its pre-war levels. The analysts added that they see a higher likelihood that oil prices will rise rather than fall, adding, “Risks to our price forecast remain significantly tilted to the upside on net, especially near-term.”

Markets are increasingly bracing for a prolonged conflict, Goldman said. Options now imply a 25% probability that Brent will remain above $100 in March 2027, up from a 6% probability a month ago, they added.

Trump asks Supreme Court to revive controversial system used for voter purges

President Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court on Tuesday to reinstate a controversial citizenship records system his administration has sought to wield for sweeping reviews of state voter rolls.

Voter roll audits using the Department of Homeland Security data program known as SAVE (Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements) have been on hold in most of the country since a lower court found that the administration violated privacy law in how it beefed up the program for voter purges.

Critics of the program argue that it produces inaccurate results wrongly identifying eligible voters as non-citizens and could lead to flawed purges that disenfranchise voters.

Trump has made the program a central tool in his government-wide effort to find proof of non-citizen voting. For at least a decade, Trump has claimed that foreigners are tainting elections – allegations that have been debunked in numerous studies of non-citizen voting that have found it to be a rare occurrence.

US Solicitor General John Sauer argued in the new filing that the “indefensible” ruling by the lower court “threatens the integrity of upcoming elections.”

The new request the Supreme Court used comes after the Trump administration is already pressing the high court to also reinstate new US Postal Service mandates proposed by the president for mail voting for the midterms.

Many Republican-led states have been eager to use SAVE to vet their voter rolls for potential non-citizens. But they acknowledge that additional investigation is needed of its results before voters are removed from the rolls.

Voter advocates filed the lawsuit after the Trump administration expanded the program to make it easier for states to use for sweeping voter purges. DHS added new sets of data to the program – like Social Security records – and allowed states to upload their voter lists in bulk. Before the changes, states could only use the data program for individualized checks of a voter’s citizenship status.

The legal challengers pointed to Texas’ experience using the expanded program last year, putting forward evidence that citizens were wrongly purged from the rolls because of the state’s SAVE review.

US District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan, a President Joe Biden appointee, said in her June ruling blocking it that the “federal government has knowingly trampled on the privacy rights of American citizens in a manner that threatens the sacred right to vote.”

The DOJ stressed in its Supreme Court filing Tuesday that the federal government was not to blame for any wrongful removals, arguing that the onus is on election officials to make sure that any purges prompted by SAVE audits followed voter registration laws.

The Trump administration has tried to condition states’ access to DHS anti-terrorism grants on states’ use of SAVE, among other elections-related requirements. Trump also touted the SAVE system in his July speech on elections, claiming that states that had used it found thousands of non-citizens on their voter rolls. However, some states have said the figures DHS put out at the time were inflated and didn’t take into account how several of the voters tagged by SAVE as non-citizens were shown to be citizens upon further investigation.

Currently, a handful of states have been able to continue to use SAVE because of separate litigation in Florida.

CNN will host a California gubernatorial debate later this month, just weeks before Election Day as voters in the nation’s most populous state decide who will succeed Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The one-hour debate between Democrat Xavier Becerra, who served as health and human services secretary during the Biden administration, and Republican Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host, will be held on September 30 at 9 p.m. ET (6 p.m. PT).

CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash will moderate the event, which will take place in the Los Angeles area.

To qualify for the debate, candidates had to meet the requirements outlined by the California secretary of state; raised, contributed or loaned at least $1 million for their gubernatorial campaign; and received at least 15% support among registered or likely voters in two polls conducted by polling organizations whose methodology meets CNN’s standards for reporting.

Hilton and Becerra emerged among a crowded field of contenders in the primary election in June.

The race is likely to be a challenge for Hilton, as he seeks to become a governor aligned with President Donald Trump in a state that voted against Trump by more than 20 percentage points in 2024. California hasn’t elected a Republican governor in 20 years. It was 2006 when voters gave Arnold Schwarzenegger a second term.

In an effort to sway voters, Hilton has seized on affordability issues and blamed Democratic leadership for high costs in the state. He’s also vowed to reduce bureaucracy.

Meanwhile, Becerra, who also previously served as California attorney general and a US congressman for the LA area, has emphasized his years of experience in governmental roles and argued that only someone who has managed crises could fix California’s problems.

Early voting and ballot drop-off locations for the general election on November 3 will be coming October 5, according to California Secretary of State Shirley Weber.

CNN’s Kaanita Iyer and David Wright contributed to this report.
