Scandal-ridden Cory Mills ousted in GOP primary in Florida’s 7th District

Ryan Elijah defeated Trump-backed Rep. Cory Mills in the GOP primary in Florida’s 7th Congressional District on Tuesday as the congressman faces numerous scandals, The Associated Press projects.

The embattled two-term congressman, who faced three primary opponents, struggled to raise money for his reelection bid as the House Ethics Committee investigates numerous allegations against him.

A former girlfriend accused Mills of threatening to release nude photos of her, prompting a judge to grant a restraining order against him last year. Police also investigated an incident early last year in which Mills was accused of physically assaulting another woman with whom he was in a relationship, though no charges resulted from the incident. The ethics panel is also looking into whether Mills violated campaign finance laws, misused congressional resources or improperly received gifts or special favors.

Mills has not been charged with any crime and has denied any wrongdoing.

But the allegations involving his treatment of women led some of his GOP colleagues to at one point consider possibly expelling him from the House.

Two of his Florida colleagues — GOP Reps. Anna Paulina Luna and Mike Haridopolos — recently endorsed Elijah in the race, calling for “leaders in Congress who serve with integrity, energy, and an unwavering commitment to the people who sent them there.”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis stated last week, “I have not endorsed Cory Mills and I do not support Cory Mills.”

The University of Virginia’s Center for Politics rates the race as likely Republican, though Democrats see the district as up for grabs in November, especially if Mills had been on the ballot.

Mills has lagged in fundraising and has less than $70,000 in the bank, according to the latest data from the Federal Election Commission, which showed Elijah with more than $186,000 cash on hand. Elijah’s Democratic opponent, Bale Dalton, has more than $475,000 cash on hand.

Media executive overcomes Trump endorsement in race to succeed Byron Donalds in ‘circus-like primary’

Catalina Lauf loses to Jim Schwartzel in Florida’s 19th Congressional District primary despite president’s backing

Florida media executive Jim Schwartzel won the GOP nomination to succeed Rep. Byron Donalds despite President Donald Trump endorsing his opponent.

President Donald Trump endorsed Catalina Lauf, who served in the Department of Commerce during his first term in office, Aug. 13, upending the race just days before voters headed to the polls in Florida’s 19th Congressional District. Tuesday night’s results bucked a trend of Trump-endorsed candidates fairing well in primary contests.

As of mid-July, 97% of candidates endorsed by the president had won their primaries.

Trump’s endorsement success rate has remained at 93% or higher since 2018, according to Ballotpedia’s election tracker.

Lauf and Schwartzel weren’t the only candidates to throw their hats into the race to be Donalds’ successor.

The field in Florida’s 19th Congressional District also included former Rep. Madison Cawthorn, who lost his North Carolina seat after a series of scandals in 2022; former Rep. Chris Collins, a former New York congressman convicted of insider trading; and Jim Oberweis, a wealthy former Illinois state senator.

The unusual cast of characters running in the election attracted amusement and ridicule from the national media. Axios dubbed the race “the GOP’s carpetbagger primary” and wrote that “whoever claws their way through the circus-like primary is almost guaranteed a ticket to Washington.”

On the campaign trail, Schwartzel attacked Lauf for running for Congress twice in Illinois before recently moving to Florida, arguing that his ties to the state ran deeper than hers.

Lauf responded that she is a “blue state refugee,” not a “carpetbagger.”

“I came here, I didn’t have a choice to be born and raised in Illinois but I have a choice to live here,” she said during a July debate.

Lauf accused Schwartzel of being behind the firing of a popular local meteorologist. Schwartzel responded that although he owns several local media stations, he did not have an ownership stake in the network that fired the meteorologist.

Schwartzel said his supporters expressed anger after Trump endorsed Lauf.

“The president endorsed my opponent tonight. You’re hearing it from me before you hear it anywhere else,” he said on the night of the endorsement.

”But let’s be precise about where that anger belongs. Not with President Trump. I’ve supported him from the beginning, and I’ll support him after Tuesday.

“It belongs with the operation that worked this for months: the out-of-state super PACs that have poured millions into this district, the Washington consultants who packaged a candidate who ran for Congress twice in Illinois and sold her as Southwest Florida’s choice, the people who decided our seat shouldn’t be settled in a room a thousand miles from here.”

U.S., South Korea cut short their joint military drills at Trump’s direction

    2026-08-18T22:26:00-0400 / CBS/AP

The South Korean and U.S. militaries have agreed to shorten their drills at the United States’ request, officials for both nations acknowledged Wednesday, days after President Trump ordered cuts to the exercises.

The allies’ summertime Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises began Monday morning for an 11-day run, just after Mr. Trump ordered they be scaled back. Mr. Trump cited what he said was a good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korea’s refusal to join the U.S. war against Iran.

A Defense Department official told CBS News in a statement Tuesday evening that, at the direction of Mr. Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the joint drills had been “substantially reduced” and would end Friday, one week earlier than had been originally scheduled.

“Associated live-training events have been reduced, with certain events canceled or converted to simulations,” the official said. “These adjustments preserve essential readiness and training objectives. There will be no degradation to U.S. training objectives.”

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed in a separate statement the reduced timeline came at the request of the U.S. It said the allies also agreed to downsize some joint field training exercises.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff added that, going forward, the two nations would “discuss and implement various measures aimed at achieving the objectives of the UFS exercise and establishing a combined defense posture.”

Many experts say Mr. Trump’s move threatens to hurt combined U.S.-South Korean readiness and eventually weaken their decades-long alliance.

Ulchi Freedom Shield is largely a computer-simulated command post exercise meant to hone the allies’ ability to deal with potential regional security threats like North Korean aggression. The two countries usually hold field training exercises during the command post exercise period.

The drills and a similar springtime exercise are a central pillar of the U.S.-South Korea alliance, which dates to the 1950-53 Korean War. But they’re also a long-running source of tensions with North Korea, which has denounced the exercises as a rehearsal for war and responded with provocative missile tests.

North Korea hasn’t responded to Mr. Trump’s overture. But earlier Wednesday, its state news agency, KCNA, published commentary slamming the U.S.-South Korean military drills as “frantic” and “extremely dangerous” and vowing to completely frustrate its rivals’ hostilities.

Experts said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, now emboldened by his advancing nuclear program and expanding military cooperation, won’t likely embrace Mr. Trump’s overture anytime soon unless he’s promised bigger concessions. In response to Mr. Trump’s previous outreach, Kim suggested last year that he can return to talks only after the U.S. drops its demand of a North Korean denuclearization as a precondition for diplomacy.

Mr. Trump and Kim met three times from 2018-2019 but their high-stakes diplomacy eventually fell apart over wrangling over a North Korean demand for extensive sanctions relief in return for limited denuclearization steps.

    马卡里因重新引入美国市场调味电子烟、流产药物审查停滞,以及与Replimune(REPL.O)、Sarepta(SRPT.O)和Moderna(MRNA.O)等制药商就救命药物和疫苗的审评公开产生分歧而受到批评。

    自迪亚曼塔斯担任代理局长以来,FDA已推翻或重新开启了Regenxbio(RGNX.O)、uniQure(UQ1.F)和Replimune(REPL.O)的罕见病疗法监管路径。

Trump picks White House adviser Heidi Overton to run FDA, source says

    2026-08-19T00:25:00.65Z / Reuters

Aug 18 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump has chosen White House policy aide Heidi Overton to lead the Food and Drug Administration, a source familiar with the matter said on Tuesday, months after previous chief Marty Makary quit.

If approved by the Senate, Overton will take over an FDA that has lost more than 3,000 staff, including division heads, over the past year, and is under pressure to rebuild confidence among industry and public-health groups amid concerns the regulator has become too political.

The White House, the FDA and Overton did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.

Overton, a doctor by training, is currently deputy director of the White House domestic policy council and has previously worked at the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think tank.

She received her medical degree from the University of New Mexico, trained in general surgery at Johns Hopkins, and pursued clinical-investigation research training at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Last week, Overton appeared at a White House event where Trump announced an executive order that calls for reducing the childhood vaccine schedule and splitting the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine into three separate shots, which could take drug developers years to achieve.

Overton was among three candidates, including oncologist Jeffrey Vacirca and Pentagon health official Stephen Ferrara, the administration focused on for Trump to nominate as FDA commissioner, Reuters reported earlier.

Kyle Diamantas has been running the agency as acting chief since May, when Makary resigned 13 months into the job after clashing with top White House and health advisers and drawing scrutiny for a series of controversial agency decisions.

Makary drew criticism for his handling of the reintroduction of flavored vapes into the U.S. market, a stalled abortion-pill review and public disagreements with drugmakers such as Replimune

    (REPL.O), Sarepta

    (SRPT.O) and Moderna

(MRNA.O) over reviews of potentially lifesaving medicines and vaccines.

Since Diamantas took over as acting chief, the FDA has reversed course or reopened regulatory paths for rare-disease therapies from Regenxbio

    (RGNX.O), uniQure

    (UQ1.F) and Replimune

    (REPL.O).

It also launched steps aimed at speeding up drug research by pairing sponsors with qualified research institutions to shorten the time from drug identification to first-in-human studies.

Before Makary’s exit, the FDA’s biologics division chief Vinay Prasad departed in April amid controversy over vaccine trial revisions and rare-disease drug rejections.

Bloomberg News reported first that Trump picked Overton to lead the FDA.

Trump says he paused 50% tariffs on some Canadian goods as deal being finalized

    2026-08-18T22:40:00-0400 / CBS News

    Updated on: August 18, 2026 / 11:26 PM EDT / CBS/AP

President Trump said Tuesday he has paused the 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods that were set to take effect Wednesday.

“I have paused the 50% Tariffs against Canada, that were scheduled to kick in tomorrow morning for a three day period, based on the fact that Canada and the U.S.A., subject to the finalization of documents, have a DEAL!” Mr. Trump said in the Truth Social post.

On Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters that the U.S. and Canada were “negotiating.”

“The negotiations are very intense and delicate. This is not the time to talk about negotiations in public,” Carney told reporters Monday, speaking in French.

The 50% tariffs would affect $20 billion worth of Canadian products, ranging from hockey sticks to tongue depressors.

But the political impact would likely have been bigger than the economic one. Canada had threatened to retaliate against any new tariffs with levies of its own, aggravating a trade fight between countries that sold each other $880 billion worth of goods and services last year.

Canadian officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press Tuesday night.

Carney and Mr. Trump had spoken twice by phone in the past two days about the ongoing negotiations, including a call Tuesday afternoon, Carney’s office said, underscoring the last-minute push for a deal.

In announcing the tariffs last month, the White House accused Canada of taking “unreasonable, unequal, and discriminatory actions” by imposing tariffs or import restrictions on certain American goods, including measures introduced after Mr. Trump’s initial round of tariffs on Canada last year.

Both countries had reason to step back from the brink. Nearly72% of Canada’s goods exports last year went to the United States. And the Trump administration would be taking a risk by imposing a hefty new tariff — paid by U.S. importers who try to pass along the cost to consumers via higher prices — ahead of November’s midterm elections. U.S. voters are already frustrated with the high cost of living.

“I don’t think either side really wants these tariffs to come into effect,” Ryan Majerus, a partner at King & Spalding and a former U.S. trade official, said before the delay was announced. “There’s a pretty strong push on both sides to find an off-ramp here.”

The Trump administration currently imposes a 10% tariff on goods from Canada, the U.S.’s second-largest trading partner after Mexico, though most Canadian imports are exempt because they comply with the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, a trade deal signed during Mr. Trump’s first term.

Mr. Trump has had a tense relationship with Canada due to trade, NATO, a dispute over aDetroit-area bridgeand his threats to make Canada the U.S.’ 51st state.

The president has made tariffs the centerpiece of his second-term economic agenda. Last year, he imposed double-digit import taxes on almost every country, justifying them by declaring the longstanding U.S. trade deficit a national emergency. The Supreme Court in February ruled that he’d overstepped his authority, striking down those tariffs and setting the stage for the federal government to pay refunds to importers.

So Mr. Trump has looked for other legal authority to impose tariffs.

To hit Canada, he reached back to the Great Depression, invoking Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 to threaten 50% tariffs on products that account for about 5% of Canadian exports to the United States.

Nearly a century ago, with the U.S. and world economies in collapse, Congress passed the 1930 tariff law, imposing taxes on imports from around the world. Known as the Smoot-Hawley tariffs, named for their congressional sponsors, they are notorious among economists and historians for limiting world commerce and making the Great Depression worse.

Section 338 tariffs have never been used before.

Section 338 authorizes the president to impose tariffs of up to 50% on imports from countries that have discriminated against U.S. businesses. No investigation is required to justify the levies. Nor is there any limit on how long the tariffs can stay in place.

The U.S. is renegotiating a North American trade pact — the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement — that Mr. Trump strong-armed America’s neighbors into accepting in his first term. The threat of Section 338 tariffs gives the U.S. leverage to seek fresh concessions from Ottawa.
