Lutnick and Epstein were in business together, Epstein files show – CBS News

    February 6, 2026 / 7:32 PM EST / CBS News

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has said he had “limited interactions” with Jeffrey Epstein, but documents show they were in business together as recently as 2014.

Lutnick and Epstein each signed on behalf of limited liability companies that agreed on Dec. 28, 2012, to acquire stakes in a now-shuttered advertising technology company called Adfin, documents released among the so-called Epstein files show.

Epstein and Lutnick’s signatures appear on neighboring pages in the contract, with Epstein signing for his Southern Trust Company, Inc. and Lutnick for a limited liability company called CVAFH I. The documents list nine shareholders in total.

Signatures of Howard Lutnick and Jeffrey Epstein appear on pages in a 2012 contract for Adfin. Released by Department of Justice

Lutnick, the former chairman of the financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald who at one point lived next door to Epstein, told the New York Post in October that he and his wife Allison had cut ties with Epstein in 2005, deciding after taking a tour of Epstein’s New York townhouse, “I will never be in the room with that disgusting person ever again.”

However, it appears Epstein and Lutnick continued to maintain contact and emails show they arranged calls and planned to have drinks in 2011.

The following year, the couple and their four children planned a visit to Epstein’s island, Little St. James, emails show. Lutnick was invited for lunch on Dec. 24, 2012, and later, Epstein’s assistant wrote on behalf of Epstein, “it was nice seeing you.”

Their Adfin deal was signed four days later.

A source close to Lutnick told CBS News “Cantor [Fitzgerald] was a small minority investor in Adfin. At the time of doing the deal, as a minority investor, Mr. Lutnick would not have any knowledge of who the other investors were.”

Eleven days after that, on Jan. 8, 2013, Epstein had his assistant forward Lutnick a document related to casino legislation in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Epstein had his island and a variety of business dealings. A spokesperson for Lutnick says he ignored the document sent to him.

A spokesperson for the Commerce Department said, “This is nothing more than a failing attempt by the legacy media to distract from the administration’s accomplishments including securing trillions of dollars in investment, delivering historic trade deals and fighting for the American worker.”

“Secretary Lutnick had limited interactions with Mr. Epstein in the presence of his wife and has never been accused of wrongdoing,” the spokesperson said.

Correspondence relating to Adfin continued until at least 2014 when one of the shareholders, David Mitchell, wrote to Epstein regarding additional fundraising involving Cantor Ventures, a venture capital subsidiary of Cantor Fitzgerald. Lutnick had been president and CEO of Cantor since 1991 and was elevated to chairman in 1996.

Also in 1996, Epstein sold a property located at 11 East 71st St. in New York to an entity called Comet Trust, which two years later sold the property to Lutnick. It became his primary residence, next door to Epstein’s New York City mansion.

By the time Epstein and Lutnick agreed to buy stakes in Adfin, it had been more than four years since Epstein agreed to enter a guilty plea to Florida state charges of procuring a child for prostitution and soliciting a prostitute. The case brought forth allegations of far broader sex trafficking and victimization of girls, but it wasn’t until 2019 that Epstein was charged with federal felonies including trafficking. He died in jail in the weeks after his arrest.

In the wake of the release of the Epstein files, Lutnick has been one of a broad international network of powerful Epstein associates who distanced themselves from the financier, only to be asked now to clarify relationships with him that appear to be closer or lengthier than they previously acknowledged.

Epstein appears to have been aware of the public relations challenge he posed to people close to him. Emails show in 2017 he agreed to donate $50,000 to a dinner in honor of Lutnick.

“hope pr is ok,” Epstein wrote to billionaire hedge fund manager John Paulson, an organizer of the dinner. Epstein declined to take a table awarded to donors of that level, writing that Lutnick could fill the seats.

Their relationship continued into the next year, 2018, when Lutnick emailed Epstein apparently complaining about an expansion plan for their neighboring Frick Collection art museum.

Lutnick warned Epstein that the renovation might “block your sunlight and views.”

“You should put in a letter. I’m sending a lawyer. Don’t ignore this,” Lutnick wrote to Epstein.

Trump says he “didn’t see” image depicting Obamas as apes in social media post

    Updated on: February 6, 2026 / 9:38 PM EST / CBS News

President Trump late Friday addressed a video posted to his social media account that included a racist depiction of Barack and Michelle Obama as apes, telling reporters he looked at the beginning of the now-deleted video but didn’t see the part that showed the former president and first lady.

“I just looked at the first part,” the president said on Air Force One, noting that most of the video was about alleged voter fraud. “I didn’t see the whole thing. I guess during the end of it, there was some kind of a picture that people don’t like. I wouldn’t like it either, but I didn’t see it.”

He suggested that he gave the video to a staffer, saying “somebody slipped” and posted it to his Truth Social account shortly before midnight on Thursday without spotting the depiction of the Obamas in the last few seconds.

“Generally they’d look at the whole thing, but I guess somebody didn’t, and they posted,” Mr. Trump said. “We took it down as soon as we found out about it.”

The White House initially defended the social media post on Friday. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt called criticism of the video “fake outrage,” and said the image of the Obamas’ faces edited onto the bodies of apes was part of a meme that depicted Democrats as characters from the Lion King.

But a litany of Republican lawmakers quickly condemned the post and urged Mr. Trump to take it down, with Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina calling it “the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House.” Several Republicans also pushed the White House to apologize.

Mr. Trump told reporters he spoke with Scott, the Senate’s sole Black Republican, confirming earlier reporting from CBS News. The post was deleted from Truth Social soon after their conversation.

Asked if he intends to apologize for the post, Mr. Trump responded: “No, I didn’t make a mistake.” But he said he “of course” condemns the racist portion of the video.

Pentagon says it’s cutting ties with “woke” Harvard, discontinuing military training and fellowships

    February 6, 2026 / 9:56 PM EST / CBS/AP

The Pentagon said Friday it is cutting ties with Harvard University, ending all military training, fellowships and certificate programs with the Ivy League institution.

The announcement marks the latest development in the Trump administration’s prolonged standoff with Harvard over the White House’s demands for reforms.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in a statement Friday that Harvard “no longer meets the needs of the War Department or the military services,” using the administration’s preferred term for the Department of Defense.

“For too long, this department has sent our best and brightest officers to Harvard, hoping the university would better understand and appreciate our warrior class,” Hegseth said. “Instead, too many of our officers came back looking too much like Harvard — heads full of globalist and radical ideologies that do not improve our fighting ranks.”

In a separate post on X, Hegseth wrote, “Harvard is woke; The War Department is not.”

Starting with the 2026-27 academic year, the Pentagon will discontinue graduate-level professional military education, fellowships and certificate programs, the statement said. Personnel currently attending classes at Harvard will be able to finish those courses.

Similar programs at other Ivy League universities will be evaluated in coming weeks, Hegseth said, alleging that Ivy League schools have shown a “pervasive institutional bias.”

Harvard runs several programs for veterans and active-duty service members, including a Harvard Kennedy School fellowship. It has a long history of links to the military, dating back to the Revolutionary War.

Hegseth earned a master’s degree from Harvard but symbolically returned his diploma in a 2022 Fox News segment. A Pentagon social media account run by Hegseth’s office resurfaced the clip in which Hegseth, then a Fox News commentator, returned the diploma and wrote “Return to Sender” on it with a marker.

The military offers its officers a variety of opportunities to get graduate-level education at both war colleges run by the military as well as civilian institutions like Harvard.

Broadly, while opportunities to attend prestigious civilian schools offer less direct benefit to a servicemember’s military career than their civilian counterparts, they help make troops more attractive employees once they leave the military.

In his post, Hegseth said officers who were sent to study at Harvard frequently came back with “heads full of globalist and radical ideologies.” He also alleged the university had “fundamentally failed to protect American students and faculty from antisemitic violence and harassment.”

Harvard has long been President Trump’s top target in his administration’s campaign to bring the nation’s most prestigious universities to heel. Administration officials have cut billions of dollars in Harvard’s federal research funding and attempted to block it from enrolling foreign students after the campus rebuffed a series of government demands last April.

The White House has said it’s punishing Harvard for tolerating anti-Jewish bias on campus. Harvard leaders argue they’re facing illegal retaliation for failing to adopt the administration’s ideological views, or failing to agree to unprecedented federal oversight over the school’s academic programs. Harvard sued the administration in a pair of lawsuits. A federal judge issued orders siding with Harvard in both cases. The administration is appealing.

Tensions had eased over the summer as Mr. Trump teased a deal that he said was just days away. It never materialized, and on Monday, the president dug deeper, demanding $1 billion from Harvard as part of any deal to restore federal funding. That’s twice what he had demanded before.

Several other elite schools have cut deals with the Trump administration to restore their federal research funding. Columbia University agreed to pay the federal government $200 million, while Brown University agreed to donate $50 million to workforce development programs.

Democratic governors disinvited from traditionally bipartisan White House gatherings

[President Donald Trump] is adjusting the guest list for the long, bipartisan tradition. Democratic governors have been excluded from the business meeting, and two of those governors, [Wes Moore]of Maryland and [Jared Polis] of Colorado, were not invited to the dinner, according to a source familiar with the matter.

“We are disappointed in the administration’s decision to make it a partisan occasion this year,”interim National Governors Association CEO Brandon Tatum said in a statement.

He added: “To disinvite individual governors to the White House sessions undermines an important opportunity for federal-state collaboration.”

The decision to exclude Democrats from the working session at the White House marks a break in tradition from presidents of both parties.

With Moore and Polis disinvited from the dinner, two Democratic officials said several governors were re-evaluating whether they planned to attend.

The Colorado and Maryland governors have both publicly tangled with and criticized Trump. But other Democrats who have openly quarreled with the administration, like[Gov. Gavin Newsom] of California and [Gov. JB Pritzker] of Illinois, were extended invitations.

Pritzker was not expecting to go to the White House anyway, aides said, citing his ongoing clashes with Trump in the wake of immigration enforcement actions in his state last year.

Polis and Moore were not informed of their exclusion or given a reason by the White House, two sources familiar with the matter said.

A spokesperson for Polis called the exclusion a “disappointing decision.”

“Gov. Polis has always been willing to work with anyone across the political spectrum who wants to help work on the hardest problems facing Colorado and America, regardless of party or who occupies the White House,” spokesperson Shelby Wieman said in a statement.

The White House and the Democratic Governors Association did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment Friday night. CNN has reached out to Moore for comment.

The annual winter meeting of the nation’s governors – long a bipartisan event focused more on policy than politics – comes as tensions have been escalating between governors and their national association.

Illinois is among the states that have stopped paying their dues to the group, after it did not speak out against the Trump administration’s decision to send National Guard troops to the state last year without coordination with Pritzker.

“The protection of gubernatorial authority and state sovereignty must always be demanded, regardless of who is occupying the White House,” a spokesman for Pritzker said. “Governor Pritzker has been vocal that the National Governors Association as a whole should stand against the deployment of National Guard troops against a governor’s wishes.”

Still, the association on Friday characterized the situation as a failure of executive branch leadership.

“NGA will remain focused on serving all governors as they deliver solutions and model leadership for the American people. Traditionally the White House has played a role in fostering these moments during NGA’s annual meeting. This year, they will not,” Tatum said in the statement.
