Robin Wall Kimmerer on the wonders of nature

    August 23, 2026 / 10:25 AM EDT / CBS News

“A sweetgrass braid is meant as an emblem, a marker, a metaphor, if you will,” said Robin Wall Kimmerer. “We are committed to braiding Mother Earth’s hair, i.e., we are committed to helping her be at her best.”

Kimmerer’s book, “Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants” (published by Milkweed Editions), was published in 2013. Through word of mouth, seven years later, in 2020, it made the New York Times Bestsellers List, and (except for one week) has been there ever since. It has sold more than two million copies.

“What I have tried to do is give voice to plants, to give voice to the land,” she said. “And I found that people were listening. That felt for me like this deep obligation to continue to raise my voice, to advocate on their behalf.”

Mother, grandmother, Ph.D. botanist, university professor, member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation – Kimmerer’s world view is the sum of all those pieces of who she is.

On her own land, outside Syracuse, N.Y., she took me on an ecological show & tell, among the New England asters and goldenrod. “Look at that color combination,” Kimmerer said. “I love how the gold, the goldenrod matches the center of the New England asters.

Author Robin Wall Kimmerer. CBS News

“I’ve used these for a long time as plant teachers,” she said, “to really think about complementary colors, and for me, complementary knowledge systems of Western scientific knowledge and Indigenous knowledge.”

Kimmerer introduced us to a tree she calls Grandmother Maple, or Nokomis Anenemik. “She is probably 200, 250 years old, and she is of course not going to be here forever, and so I planted her a companion – a basswood, or linden tree.”

Correspondent Martha Teichner with Robin Wall Kimmerer and the “Grandmother Maple.” CBS News

Why not another maple? “Maples are probably going to be leaving us as climate chaos ensues,” Kimmerer said. “And so, I wanted the replacement tree to be someone who could withstand the rigors of climate change.”

Notice she refers to “Grandmother Maple,” and to the replacement tree, as someone, not something. “To me, they’re persons,” she said. “They’re photosynthetic beings. They’re my relatives.”

She’s launched a campaign called Plant Baby Plant – her effort to get people to plant trees. She also passes on the stories of trees to a group of Indigenous kids in Northern Michigan. Kimmerer wants to start them young, showing respect for nature, and gratitude for the Earth’s gifts.

Here, along the shore of Lake Michigan last August, she greets the water. “The joy of connection,” she said, “is the joy of being alive.”

Robin Wall Kimmerer greets the waters of Lake Michigan. CBS News

Kimmerer tries to pair events involving Native communities with her book events, like one held a day later, in Traverse City, Michigan, where she told her audience, “The way that I like to talk about economic thinking, grounded in Indigenous principles, as I understand them, and natural law, is this notion of the gift. Let’s take water. I’m going to sell water. How can you sell what you don’t own? Well, hello capitalism! To me, that is corruption. These are our gifts.”

    Scribner

Which is what her recent book, “The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World” (published by Scribner), is about. It’s sold more than 400,000 copies since it came out at the end of 2024. She writes:

This abundance of berries feels like a pure gift from the land. I have not earned, paid for, nor labored for them. There is no mathematics of worthiness that reckons I deserve them in any way. And yet here they are — along with the sun and the air and the birds and the rain, gathering in the towers of cumulonimbi. You could call them natural resources or ecosystem services, but the Robins and I know them as gifts. We both sing gratitude with our mouths full.

They go by many names, among them saskatoons, juneberries, serviceberries. They look like fat blueberries, but taste more like apples.

Kimmerer said, “Many traditional societies have operated with gift economies where you say, well, what do I have in abundance? It’s too much for me. I’m going to share it with my neighbors. The currency of a gift economy isn’t money, it isn’t a commodity; it’s gratitude. It’s respect, and reciprocity. The more you give it, the more it multiplies; the more lives it supports.”

Her message may sound like a religion, and her writing like poetry, but what Robin Wall Kimmerer really wants is that her readers don’t miss her point: “I wanted to be sure that they understood the radical proposition which is baked into these stories, which is to model ourselves after the way that nature works.”

When it’s suggested that what she has written, in conventional Western thought, is incredibly subversive, Kimmerer replied, “I mean it to be so. Because what is dangerous to life on the planet, to our well-being at this moment, is the status quo, is business-as-usual of taking, taking, taking from the Earth without ever giving back.”

(WTTG)

Northern Virginia Democrats faced questions about how a Tajik national committed to a psychiatric facility after killing his landlord was twice allowed to leave — once to obtain a passport and once to visit an apartment — before escaping to Tajikistan.

Abdulloi Doniyor Toshpulodzoda had been held at a mental health facility in Falls Church, Virginia, after being found not guilty by reason of insanity in the killing of his landlord but was allowed an escorted visit to the Tajik embassy in Foggy Bottom, DC, and later to an Alexandria apartment, where he obtained an airline ticket to Dushanbe and left the country.

“I don’t know about investigation, but certainly it’s a bad thing that he’s not in our custody, not being subject to the laws of the United States,” Rep. Donald Beyer, D-Va., told Fox News Digital when asked if federal authorities should investigate the situation.

“There’s a failure in the system somewhere along the way. I don’t know whether it’s failure to put [Toshpulodzoda] in the mental hospital or the hospital didn’t have the right security to keep them there. But no, we don’t want bad guys on the loose,” Beyer said. His district includes Alexandria, Arlington and part of Fairfax County, including the Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute, where Toshpulodzoda was housed.

Beyer pushed back on criticism of Fairfax County, saying he does not believe local leaders would consider it a “sanctuary” jurisdiction for illegal immigrants. He also said he presumed Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano was justified in having Toshpulodzoda committed to the psychiatric facility.

Beyer also pushed back on arguments that Toshpulodzoda should have been deported rather than committed to a psychiatric facility, saying someone who commits a serious crime should face consequences in the U.S. before being sent home.

“Deportation doesn’t seem sufficient punishment for someone who’s committed a major felony,” Beyer said.

Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, who represents neighboring Loudoun and Fauquier counties, told Fox News Digital that U.S. laws cover murder and violent crime and that criminals “should be held accountable.”

“I’ve been pretty consistent that if someone’s undocumented and they committed a crime, that they should be held accountable for the crime and we should look into whether they should be deported at that point,” Subramanyam, a Democrat, said.

“So you know, I think that’s the federal law at this point and we have to go case by case though, because not every person who commits any crime should be deported automatically, right.”

Subramanyam said officials should consider the circumstances when illegal immigrants commit minor offenses such as moving violations while also verifying a suspect’s immigration status.

“We have to make sure we go case by case, but. In the instance of violent crime, for instance, they need to be held accountable,” he said.

Subramanyam said he wants accountability on both sides of the process, for suspects who break the law and agents who do the same.

“I want to make sure that if an ICE officer does the wrong thing that they’re held accountable and there’s not a cover up for them… that’s what happened in the case of Renee Good was that a lot of public pressure led to some people getting removed, but that wasn’t enough when they need to actually have the DOJ and FBI investigate and prosecute instances where they’re going too far.”

Good, an anti-ICE activist in Minnesota, was shot and killed by an ICE agent in January after officials said she tried to strike him with her car while shadowing immigration enforcement operations.

Laura Birnbaum, a spokesperson for Descano, told Fox News Digital that the office did not oppose Toshpulodzoda’s escorted visit to the embassy in 2024 but has successfully argued multiple times in court against his outright release.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Tajik embassy for comment.

Fast-growing Hawk Fire near Reno, Nevada forces thousands to evacuate

    August 23, 2026 / 9:16 AM EDT / CBS/AP

A fast-growing wildfire spread from the Sierra foothills toward the center of Reno early Sunday, forcing nearly 14,000 homes to be evacuated.

The “GO NOW” zone reached the edge of the University of Nevada campus as the Hawk Fire grew to more than 10,500 acres. As of Sunday morning, it was 0% contained.

Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and mobilized the Nevada National Guard to support aerial firefighting with two helicopter crews as well as 60 troops to help police safeguard evacuated neighborhoods.

“This is an active and rapidly evolving situation, and I urge everyone in the affected areas to remain vigilant and follow the direction of local officials,” Lombardo said in a statement posted on social media. “The state is fully engaged, and we are working alongside local authorities and first responders to deploy every available resource to protect lives, safeguard communities, and keep Nevadans out of harm’s way.”

The fire apparently began Saturday and grew significantly throughout the day, fueled by strong, gusty winds, low humidity and dry vegetation, according to a statement from Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue.

“The Hawk Fire is a very dynamic incident for us as it’s being driven by the winds,” Richard Edwards, chief of Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue in Washoe County, said in a video posted to social media. “The wind-driven fires move very rapidly into our residential areas, creating a lot of challenges for our firefighters to save homes and protect lives.”

The fire zone is surrounded by neighborhoods, and nearly 10,000 homes and businesses were without power in Washoe County on Sunday. Portions of U.S. Route 395, a major north-south highway, were closed due to the fire. Reno has a population of more than 280,000 residents.

“If you have been told to evacuate, please don’t wait!” Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve said in a statement posted on social media late Saturday night. “Structures have already been burned in this fire and your life is more important than a building. Evacuating before the fire arrives also allows our firefighters to focus their efforts on battling the blaze.”

Casinos in Reno offered discounts on hotel rooms to evacuees.

Washoe County, Nevada, emergency officials opened the Reno-Sparks Convention Center to evacuees, but said they couldn’t bring their pets — small animals and large animals were to be left at two other locations. The Northwest Specialty Hospital in Washoe County said it has evacuated all patients out of an abundance of caution.

“The safety and well-being of our patients and staff remain our highest priority,” the Northern Nevada Health System said in a statement on social media.

The Reno-Tahoe International Airport was outside the evacuation zone. Commercial flights at the airport were unaffected Sunday. The smaller Reno-Stead Airport was closed to general aviation traffic due to the Hawk Fire, but remained open to firefighting aircraft.

Earlier this month, three wildfires fueled by hot, dry and windy conditions north of Reno forced more than 13,000 residents from their homes, according to the Nevada National Guard.
