For Republicans, Dallas convention is both rally and rescue mission

    2026-08-24T10:04:43.642Z / Reuters

Aug 24 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s Republican Party is increasingly viewing its first-of-a-kind midterm convention in Dallas next month as crucial to regaining momentum at a time when opinion polls show voter frustration over the economy and the Iran war, according to party officials, donors and convention planners.

When Republicans announced the convention earlier this year, some strategists dismissed it as a distraction as campaigns entered the final stretch. They questioned the need for a national gathering with no official party business.

Now, after months of negative headlines tied to the war and rising living costs, party officials see the September 9-10 gathering as their best opportunity to rally voters behind Trump’s agenda as Democrats mount a serious challenge to Republican control of both houses of Congress in the November 3 election. Some Republicans, however, remain skeptical it can meaningfully shift voter sentiment.

The party officials said the event offers a platform to refocus voters on Trump’s tax cuts, immigration policies and other achievements. Organizers plan to spotlight Americans they say have benefited from those policies while portraying the Democratic Party as increasingly dominated by socialist ideas and activists, according to a source familiar with the planning.

The party plans to put Trump at the center of the convention, a tactic some strategists warn could backfire by drawing attention to a president with a low approval rating who has repeatedly urged Americans to endure the economic costs of the Iran war.

Republican National Committee spokesperson Natalie Baldassarre said the convention would rally voters behind Trump’s agenda, including efforts to lower drug prices, cut taxes and secure the southern border with Mexico.

“President Trump turns out voters like no other candidate, and this convention will provide the momentum needed to expand our majorities in November,” Baldassarre said in a statement.

    CANDIDATES FACE TRUMP CONVENTION DILEMMA

It remains unclear which congressional candidates will speak during the two-day event. Advisers to three campaigns in competitive districts told Reuters they had yet to be informed whether their candidates would be offered speaking slots.

Reuters contacted representatives for Republican candidates in 37 competitive U.S. House races and eight closely contested U.S. Senate races to ask whether they planned to attend the convention and deliver a speech.

Of the 45, only one campaign offered a substantive response: Republican Representative Tom Barrett, seeking reelection in a tight race in Michigan, who plans to skip the convention and remain on the campaign trail.

“He’s in a tough reelection campaign and his voters are in his district,” said Jason Cabel Roe, a strategist working for the Barrett campaign.

Still, most of the dozen party insiders interviewed by Reuters, including convention planners and Republican National Committee members, described the convention as the party’s best chance to energize Republican voters, whose enthusiasm trails that of Democrats, according to polls.

“There is no better salesman for the country than Donald Trump. I don’t think it’s going to hurt at all,” said Rob Steele, a Republican National Committeeman from Michigan.

Ray Washburne, a Republican donor co-chairing the convention with his wife, told Reuters he expected about 30,000 attendees, a figure that would exceed the seating capacity of the American Airlines Center in Dallas by some 8,000 people. He said organizers raised $42 million and will fully fund the event.

The timing, just at the start of the school year, could pose challenges for some attendees. One state party chair told Reuters he had returned many of his delegation’s allotted seats after members said they could not make the schedule work.

While declining to provide a complete speaker list, Washburne said most of Trump’s cabinet secretaries would attend, along with “pretty much everyone running in a hot race.” Vice President JD Vance will speak on September 9, followed by Trump on September 10.

Dave Wilson, a South Carolina-based Republican strategist, said he was skeptical a rally-style convention would move the needle unless it was used to unveil a major response to voters’ top concern: the cost of living.

“I don’t know that we’re going to see a convention in Dallas change what happens in Cheyenne, Wyoming, or Charleston, South Carolina,” Wilson said, invoking places far from the convention to illustrate his point. “I don’t think the average Republican voter even knows there’s a convention going on.”

    CANDIDATES SEEK DONORS AND SPOTLIGHT

Though it falls outside the traditional four-year presidential election cycle, the convention is expected to serve a familiar purpose as a fundraising and networking hub for candidates and donors. The RNC has already launched a website selling official convention hats, T-shirts and mugs.

Washburne said the event would give candidates significant media exposure to promote their campaigns. U.S. Senate candidate Ken Paxton of Texas, whose campaign has been dogged by scandal, was someone who could benefit from the attention generated by a convention in his home state, Washburne added.

With Trump’s approval rating at 33%, some Republicans questioned the wisdom of the event. One strategist working on a competitive race, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it made little sense to tie candidates more closely to Trump when many are trying to focus on local issues and win over independent voters.

Oscar Brock, an RNC member from Tennessee, said many candidates would feel obliged to attend the Dallas gathering to court donors and raise their profiles through media appearances, even as some remain wary of embracing Trump.

Ex-NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom ejected from WNBA game after being confronted by Chicago Sky star Natasha Cloud

    August 24, 2026 / 7:01 AM EDT / CBS/AP

Former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom was ejected from Sunday night’s Indiana-Chicago WNBA game after he was confronted by Sky guard Natasha Cloud late in the third quarter.

Freedom was sitting along the baseline. He had on a black shirt that read “WOMAN noun. adult human female.”

The Fever called for a timeout after Cloud scored inside with 1:22 left in the third. Cloud then did a chest bump with teammate Aicha Coulibaly before turning around and walking in Kanter’s direction.

Cloud, 34, started yelling and pointing at Kanter, 34, as she approached him. Video showed a standing Kanter holding his arms out and taking one step on the court as security and a handful of Sky players moved in between the two.

“There was just a fan incident and the security handled it, and we’re just going to focus on the game,” Chicago forward Azura Stevens said after the Sky’s 113-90 loss.

Chicago coach Tyler Marsh said Cloud was concerned about being a distraction for the team.

“I told her she wasn’t,” Marsh said. “I told her that we all embrace her as someone that protects our team and protects people that need to be protected and so Tash is always going to stand on that, and we stand for Tash.”

Freedom stopped near the basket to plead his case to security as he was escorted from the court area. He spun around while holding his shirt out and encouraged the crowd to respond as he walked toward the front lobby.

He had a conversation with a group of police officers before departing Wintrust Arena.

“I didn’t see it, we were talking about the next play in our huddle,” Indiana star Caitlin Clark said, “so I think that’s probably a question for Chicago.”

The WNBA has been the subject of recent debates on whether transgender women — people assigned male at birth who transition to align with their gender identity — should be allowed to participate in the league. There has never been such a player in the WNBA.

Although the league’s collective bargaining agreement says the WNBA is restricted to women, it contains no more specific language about gender identity or sex assigned at birth.

Fever guard Sophie Cunningham said in an ESPN profile published last month that she was opposed to transgender girls and women competing in girls’ and women’s sports. Freedom and Royce White, another former NBA player, have declared themselves eligible for the WNBA draft, saying they identify as women.

Kanter, a native of Turkey who became a U.S. citizen in 2021, joined a small rally in support of Cunningham outside the arena before the game.

Asked if he had a message for Kanter, Marsh praised the league and its players.

“If you come to a game you should probably come to enjoy the basketball,” he said, “and that seems pretty simple to me. I think these players deserve that and have earned that. Being a former basketball player, you should probably understand and feel that too.”

Cloud did not speak with the media after Sunday’s game, CBS Sports reported. She later made a statement on social media.

“To every trans kid/person, You are apart of MY community & tribe. You belong. You’re loved. You’re seen. You’re perfect as you are. & you will always be protected by me,” Cloud wrote.

This is not the first time Cloud and Kanter Freedom have crossed paths. In 2023, the two went back and forth on social media after Cloud criticized the U.S. government.

这种私下的紧张关系在7月31日戴维营 televised cabinet meeting( televised cabinet meeting)中公开化。

Trump’s frustrations drove vaccine order, but MAHA wants more

    • Summary
    • Order cuts federal childhood immunization schedule to 11 shots from 17
    • Trump also orders Justice Department to challenge state school vaccination requirements
    • Officials say RFK Jr’s vaccine studies are expected to take months, if not longer

WASHINGTON, Aug 24 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s frustration that his administration was not doing enough to address what he considers a likely contributor to autism drove a U.S. executive order this month that cut back the number of childhood vaccinations, administration officials told Reuters.

These five current and former officials privately say the order alone does not substantially change U.S. vaccine policy and will not ‌satisfy Trump’s demands or Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s “Make America Healthy Again” political base.

Keep up with the latest medical breakthroughs and healthcare trends with the award-winning Reuters Health Rounds newsletter. Sign up here.

Instead, Kennedy and his allies are focused on a series of studies that the health secretary kicked off last year examining what they say are the dangers of vaccines, including a potential link with autism. Medical experts and scientists say such concerns have been thoroughly refuted by studies examining millions of children over many years.

“No one wants to see this get done with an executive order. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. knows that will not be a lasting change if it’s not backed up by credible science,” said Del Bigtree, one of Kennedy’s longtime allies and chief executive officer of Informed Consent Action Network, a group that has continually questioned vaccine safety. “This is only the beginning of a process that had to happen.”

The White House and the Department of Health and Human Services declined to comment on the specifics of what led to the executive order. White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement that Trump was responding to “countless parents (who) have had their questions and concerns about America’s childhood vaccine schedule ignored if not outright mocked.”

HHS spokeswoman Grace Davis Jamison confirmed the research studies under way at the agency. “We are pursuing dozens of studies and analyses using some of the nation’s largest health datasets to uncover the root causes of America’s chronic disease epidemic,” Jamison said in a statement.

    EXPERTS WARN OF CONFUSION

Leading medical groups say the Trump order will increase confusion and vaccine hesitancy among U.S. families and expose more children to preventable diseases. They fear that Kennedy’s push for vaccine safety studies is directed toward a predetermined conclusion that the shots are more dangerous than the illnesses they prevent.

Trump’s vaccine order calls for reducing the federal childhood inoculation schedule to 11 immunizations from 17 and for separating the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine into three separate shots — a feat pharmaceutical companies said could take years. It also directs the Justice Department to challenge state vaccination requirements for children to attend school.

Kennedy unveiled a similarly whittled-down immunization schedule in January that circumvented the normal government process for making changes to vaccine policy. A federal judge in March blocked the changes, saying that health regulators had acted unlawfully to carry out the health secretary’s ‌agenda. The administration is still bound by that ruling, which it is appealing.

    BIG PROMISES, GROWING FRUSTRATION

Kennedy, an influential promoter of anti-vaccine views for decades, promised an ambitious agenda as Trump’s top health official. Soon after taking office in early 2025, he said his department would find the causes behind rising U.S. rates of autism and re-examine the safety of childhood vaccines.

But Kennedy’s self-imposed deadlines on autism answers, first in September of that year, then in March 2026, came and went with no new revelations. In recent months, Trump has pressed Kennedy to deliver on his promises regarding autism in meetings at the Oval Office and in frequent phone calls.

That pressure has come even as the president’s political advisers urged the health secretary early this year not to talk publicly about vaccines ahead of November’s midterm elections — a request Kennedy complied with.

But Trump has remained fixated on reducing the number of vaccinations American children receive, according to the five current and former officials. In addition, Trump and Kennedy have spoken extensively about trying to find treatments and a “cure” for autism, according to the officials.

The private tensions came to the fore during a July 31 televised cabinet meeting at Camp David. Trump asked Kennedy: “How are you doing on the autism research?” Kennedy replied: “We will have an answer for you.”

Trump’s public questioning of Kennedy signaled to White House and health department officials that the president wanted to see immediate action, according to three senior administration officials. The executive order Trump announced on vaccines was quickly cobbled together this summer, one of the officials said.

There has been a “tide shift” on discussing vaccines since the cabinet meeting, one of the officials said. “Trump and Kennedy are more synced up than they have been all year.”

The studies Kennedy is overseeing examine whether the MMR vaccine produces unintended changes in the immune system, which scientists have refuted; whether autism diagnoses are linked to childhood vaccinations; a potential link between vaccines and autoimmune diseases; and the impact of thimerosal, which was removed from childhood vaccines more than two decades ago, among other studies.

The work mostly relies on federal health databases that experts have warned can be misused and misinterpreted if not analyzed properly. The work is expected to take months if not longer, adding to Trump’s frustration, according to two of the officials.

2 Phoenix police officers fired, arrested after violent, unreported traffic stop, police chief says

    August 24, 2026 / 5:50 AM EDT / CBS/AP

Phoenix — Two Phoenix police officers were fired and arrested after an unreported traffic stop in which they assaulted a man and woman and shocked them with a Taser, the city’s police chief said.

Officers Antonio Felix and Luis Vasquez were arrested on charges including aggravated assault and kidnapping, Police Chief Matt Giordano said at a news conference Saturday.

“Detectives have confirmed that the two former officers physically assaulted both the man and woman during the traffic stop,” Giordano said. “The investigation also shows that a Taser was used on the victims during the stop.”

CBS Phoenix affiliate KPHO-TV reported Sunday evening that newly released court documents say both officers admitted to their involvement in a violent traffic stop.

At their initial court appearance Saturday night, a judge set a $100,000 secured appearance bond for each defendant, with electronic monitoring required if they’re released, KPHO said. Their next court date is scheduled for Friday.

The officers didn’t report the Aug. 5 traffic stop and didn’t activate their body-worn cameras, Giordano said.

“There is no video evidence, but we established what we believe is probable cause that these crimes were committed,” Giordano said, adding there was no indication that the officers knew the victims.

“There is no excuse for the conduct that these two officers engaged in,” Giordano continued, according to CBS Phoenix affiliate KPHO-TV.

Dave Evans, a spokesperson for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, said Sunday that Vasquez had been released from custody while Felix remained incarcerated at the Lower Buckeye Jail in Phoenix.

Attempts by CBS News to determine who their defense attorneys are to request comment were unsuccessful.

The male driver and woman passenger reported that the officers smashed the car window during the late-night traffic stop in Phoenix, according to a statement from Phoenix police. Vasquez punched the man and threatened to shoot him, while the woman was removed from the vehicle and handcuffed, the statement said.

The man managed to drive away and abandoned the car in neighboring Tempe, while the woman was released at the scene, the statement added.

A police officer in neighboring Tempe who responded to the abandoned car asked over dispatch whether it had fled from any neighboring police agencies and was told it had not, according to a Tempe police report.

The Tempe officer called the car’s registered owner, the mother of the male driver, and through her was able to connect with the woman passenger and eventually the male driver. The woman passenger told the officer that both of them had been shocked with a Taser, while the man later told the officer that he had been punched in the face multiple times and that they had repeatedly asked why they had been stopped.

The Tempe officer wrote in the report that he believed they were victims of an attempted carjacking by people impersonating police officers.

Giordano, the Phoenix police chief, said he had a similar reaction when he initially learned of the incident as it was “so far outside the bounds of our policies.” But when detectives started looking into it, they realized Phoenix officers might be involved and transitioned the case to a special investigations detail, he said.

“That’s when they started putting evidence together, including the automatic vehicle locator that did put a vehicle at that location about the time that the victims reported it occurred,” Giordano said, referring to the location technology in city vehicles.

Vasquez and Felix had served eight and nine years with Phoenix police, respectively. Giordano, without elaborating, said both had previously violated department policy but that it was “nothing of this nature.”

The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association — the local police union — said in a statement that it “is deeply troubled by the conduct alleged against two former Phoenix police officers. … If proven, these actions represent a significant breach of the public trust and do not reflect the professionalism and integrity demonstrated every day by the men and women of the Phoenix Police Department. … We support Chief Giordano and the Department’s decision to terminate the officers following its investigation.”

The Phoenix department’s investigation and audit are ongoing.

The U.S. military conducted a deadly attack against a vessel on Sunday, killing two people that it described as “narco-terrorists.”

Video footage shows the explosive strike on the low-profile vessel.

“On August 23, under the commander of U.S. Southern Command, Gen. Francis L. Donovan’s direction, Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere executed a lethal kinetic strike on a low-profile vessel operating along established narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific,” an Aug. 24 news release stated.

“Confirmed intelligence revealed the vessel’s active involvement in narco-trafficking. The operation killed two narco-terrorists,” the release noted.

The military has executed dozens of strikes against alleged drug trafficking vessels during President Donald Trump’s second term in office, a policy that has been controversial.

The last time U.S. Southern Command announced such a strike was just over two months ago on June 21 — that strike killed two, but there were six survivors.

“When I ordered the establishment of Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere, it was precisely for this purpose: to accelerate, synchronize, and execute lethal actions against these destabilizing narco-terrorist networks,” Donovan said, according to the Monday announcement about the strike carried out on Sunday. “We are committed to imposing total systemic friction on narco-terrorists — disrupting their operations, dismantling their leadership, and eliminating cartel terror across the region.”

Suspect in murders of 5 found dead day after their bodies were discovered outside Portland, Oregon, police say

    2026-08-24T04:35:00-0400 / CBS/AP

Forest Grove, Oregon — A quintuple murder suspect was found dead inside a vehicle in Enumclaw, Washington, on Sunday, a day after the bodies of five people were discovered on a rural property outside Portland, Oregon, authorities said.

Investigators believe the suspect, 36-year-old Benjamin Charles Parker, killed himself, the Washington County (Oregon) Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Sunday evening. Officials said there was no ongoing threat to the public.

They didn’t say how investigators were led to Parker, or what connection he had to the unnamed victims. But Washington County Sheriff Caprice Massey said Parker knew the victims, CBS Portland affiliate KOIN-TV reported. Massey added there was no ongoing risk to the community.

The car with Parker’s body inside was located behind a Safeway store, the Enumclaw Police Department said, according to KOIN.

The sheriff’s office said earlier that authorities responded early Saturday to reports of a vehicle fire at a property in Forest Grove, about 30 miles west of downtown Portland. Responders then found the remains of five people and “several domestic animals.”

They didn’t disclose the ages or genders of the people found, how they died or what possible connections they might have with one another. The types of animals found dead also weren’t specified.

At a news conference Sunday afternoon, sheriff’s Detective Shannon Wilde said they were still working to determine who the victims were.

“Any time you have one person deceased, let alone five, that’s a logistical challenge,” Wilde said, noting the complexity of the investigation and the large crime scene.

When asked by reporters about the amount of time that passed between authorities first discovering the bodies and releasing information the following afternoon, Wilde said authorities were trying to identify the victims and notify their next of kin while also working on a “very active investigation with a lot of moving pieces.” Authorities wanted to ensure they released accurate information in a responsible way, she said.

Sheriff Caprice Massey urged anyone familiar with the property or the people who live there to share any information they may have.

“I will say that in my 22 years here, I have not been a part of or witnessed a scene quite this complex involving this type of an investigation,” she said.

    image
