Beijing— How long before China is ready to deploy humanoid robot soldiers?

That question is on the minds of many of the humans gathered in Beijing right now to watch the World Humanoid Robot Games, and as smashed records highlight the dizzying pace of advancement, one developer tells CBS News the answer is likely less than a decade.

Impressive (and unimpressive) feats of athleticism

In the indoor arena used as the speedskating venue for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, dozens of humanoid robots stand in the center of the track, surrounded by their human minders, while hundreds of spectators in the crowd watch and cheer from their seats.

Two more are in a boxing ring, dressed in red and black headgear, punching and kicking each other in a kickboxing match. Others stand around a large gymnastics spring mat, waiting their turn as a preceding robot flips and spins through a floor routine.

Smaller robots — the size of children — gather on a miniature soccer field, kicking a ball up and down the synthetic grass. Others compete in an obstacle course, running, crawling, weaving and climbing their way to the finish.

This is the 2026 World Humanoid Robot Games, where more than 2,000 robots from more than 600 teams representing 16 countries are competing for glory. It’s the second time the event has been held, and just like last year, it is being hosted by China.

One of the machines beat Jamaican track great Usain Bolt’s 100-meter sprint record on Sunday, running the 109 yards in just 9.39 seconds, beating Bolt’s 2009 time of 9.58 seconds.

But it doesn’t always go to plan.

During competition, a number of humanoid robots have tripped, collapsed, burst into flames or slammed into safety barriers and then been stretchered off the track. Crowds here have been thoroughly entertained.

But the question many are asking as they witness the (sometimes) remarkable agility on the track isn’t when the next record will be challenged, it’s how long before these eerily familiar, yet coldly unhuman machines are equipped with weapons and turned into soldiers.

“It all depends on who controls them”

Events such as sprints, long jump, weightlifting and boxing reveal physical attributes that one can easily see being transferred to the battlefield.

Robotics engineer Yang Kun, who works for Shanghai-based humanoid robot company AG BOT, told CBS News that creating robot soldiers is the ultimate aim, and he believes Chinese companies are only five to 10 years away from achieving it.

“That’s what we really want to do as we can make sure people in the world will not be attacked,” he said. “We will use the robots to show the power of a country like China that will ensure no other country would attack. This will prevent war.”

When CBS News asked Yang if robots could become evil — the Terminator movies are starting to feel a little too real — he shook his head.

“No, I don’t think so. Robots don’t have emotion, only humans,” he said. “It all depends on who controls them and who makes them.”

The aim of the robot games, from China’s perspective, is to show off the pace of the technological advances being made — and to show off the extent to which Chinese prioritization of the research and development of humanoids is putting the country in pole position.

President Xi Jinping wants China to dominate in science and technology, and under his leadership, Beijing is investing heavily in these industries, with AI and robotics already featuring in everyday life for many Chinese.

Yang, whose robot “A3” competed in the kickboxing events at the games, was very pleased with the humanoid’s performance.

“In the future it can go to hotel(s), our house, to do some cleaning,” he said of the imminent uses of the technology he’s working on — “to make daily life better through technology.”

But not much further down the road, he said, they will also “do some combat, and go to the military, and do other things.”

Aug 24 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s administration on Monday released a proposed regulation ​to codify an unprecedented fee of more than $100,000 on new H-1B visas for highly skilled foreign workers that has been blocked ‌by the courts.

The fee, first temporarily imposed by Trump last year dramatically raises the cost of visas that are heavily relied on in the tech, education and research sectors.

A federal judge in June ruled that the fee was illegal and blocked the Trump administration from collecting it. A Boston-based appeals court is reviewing that decision while a different court considers whether a judge properly ​rejected a challenge to the fee by a major business group.

Trump’s temporary fee increase expires in September, one year after it was issued. ​The proposed rule by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, posted in the Federal Register on Monday, would make a ⁠fee of $103,265 permanent. It could be finalized by the end of the year.

The H-1B program allows U.S. employers to hire foreign workers with training in specialty ​fields and offers 65,000 visas annually, with another 20,000 for workers with advanced degrees, approved for three to six years. Those visas typically came with fees between $2,000 ​and $5,000 before Trump’s order.

The fee would not apply to visas granted to foreign citizens already in the United States on student visas, who make up a large share of new H-1B recipients, or to renewals of current visas.

DEBATE OVER VISA PROGRAM

Trump, a Republican, and other critics of the H-1B program say it is abused by many companies who replace ​American workers with cheaper foreign labor. But business groups and many individual companies have said the visa program is needed to address a lack of ​qualified American workers for some jobs and to allow U.S. businesses to recruit top talent.

About 70 employers had paid the $100,000 fee on a total of 85 visa applications as ‌of late ⁠February, according to court filings.

In imposing the fee, Trump invoked the president’s power under immigration law to restrict the entry of certain foreign nationals who would be detrimental to U.S. interests.

The fee is being challenged by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the largest U.S. business lobbying group, Democratic-led states and a coalition of unions and employers. Those lawsuits could be amended to challenge the rule proposed this week once it is finalized.

LEGAL CHALLENGES MOUNT

The lawsuits claim that Trump’s power to ​restrict entry does not allow him ​to override the law that created ⁠the H-1B visa program. The states and groups that sued also say that the Homeland Security Department cannot impose fees, taxes or other means to generate revenue for the United States without permission from Congress.

The Trump administration has ​maintained that the fee is not a traditional tax and that courts have little power to question the president’s ​authority to restrict ⁠entry into the country.

Amid Trump’s broader immigration crackdown, employers last year registered for about 344,000 H-1B visas, down more than 25% from 2024 and fewer than half of the 794,000 visas sought in 2023, according to data from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The Trump administration has also ordered enhanced vetting of H-1B applicants and proposed a new ⁠visa selection ​process that would favor higher-skilled and better-paid workers. Earlier in August, the Department of Homeland ​Security in a separate rule added fees of up to $4,500 to applications to extend the stay of H-1B workers or to transfer employees based in other countries to the United States.

Tourist dies in Death Valley National Park after car gets stuck in 116-degree heat

A 68-year-old tourist died in Death Valley National Park after his car became trapped in mud in soaring temperatures last week, officials said.

Pierre Michel Formosa was visiting Death Valley from France when he and a travel companion found themselves stranded on a road in a remote section of the California park on Aug. 17. He and the companion left the vehicle and began to walk across salt flats in hopes of finding help.

But, after traversing the area on foot for about 1.3 miles, without another person in sight, Formosa “was unable to continue,” according to the National Park Service. Temperatures had reached 116 degrees Fahrenheit that afternoon.

The companion continued walking on his own and eventually passed a driver, who reported the incident to park rangers from a visitor’s center in the area at around 2 p.m. local time. Rangers started to search for Formosa less than 15 minutes later. They were joined by a county deputy and California Highway Patrol helicopter.

They were ultimately able to locate Formosa later that afternoon. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the National Park Service said. The Inyo County coroner will determine his cause and manner of death, which have not yet been released publicly.

Mike Reynolds, the superintendent of the park, shared condolences with Formosa’s family and friends in a statement. He also warned of the hazards that can come with visiting Death Valley.

“This is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly conditions here can turn dangerous,” Reynolds said. “Death Valley is an extraordinary place, but its heat, distances, and remoteness can be dangerous, regardless of experience. We’re grateful to everyone who took part in the search, and our thoughts are with his loved ones.”

Death Valley bills itself as the “hottest place on Earth,” with an all-time temperature of 134 degrees recorded in the park in July 1913. It’s also extremely dry.

Formosa’s death in triple-digit conditions came as parts of California and other states across the American West experience notably severe heat and drought over the last few months. In Southern California, the National Park Service said this upcoming week was expected to be the hottest of the summer so far.

根据基隆地方检察署星期一（8月24日）发布的新闻稿，九名被告涉嫌内外勾结，规避英伟达（Nvidia）和美国美超微公司（Supermicro）对高端AI服务器的销售及流向管制，取得130台搭载英伟达B300图形处理器的服务器；其中74台已直接或经第三地转运至中国大陆，另有56台在出口前遭查获。

检方说，涉案高端服务器具备强大的AI及高效运算能力，因此产品流向、最终用户及用途都受到两家公司严格管控。买家须经英伟达审核列入白名单，并提交最终用途和最终用户声明，经英伟达和美超微审核后才能购买，且不得转售；一次采购八台以上，还须接受实地查核。

检方指出，一家经营服务器买卖业务公司的实际负责人陈姓男子和总经理C男，认为转售高端AI服务器有利可图，2025年2月与身份不明人士策划控制一家日本公司作为中转点，并设法让公司取得英伟达白名单资格。陈男目前受台湾检方通缉。

同年7月，两人开始与美超微的台湾员工、经销商及数据中心人员等谋划规避审查。美超微台湾一名资深业务协理透露审查流程，让公司预先准备审查所需文件，并联系英伟达台湾的张姓资深合作伙伴经理申请服务器配额；经销商则代垫购买资金以规避资金来源审查，另有人营造服务器实际在台湾机房运作的假象，以应付实地查核。美超微另一名资深业务协理后来得知服务器实际销往大陆后，不仅未揭发，还参与分润。

美超微随后批准出售130台服务器，并于今年1月和3月分三批交付。首两批共66台全部流入中国大陆，其中16台从台湾直接出口，另50台经印度尼西亚转运；第三批64台中，八台经日本、香港转运至大陆，其余56台准备出口日本时遭台湾海关拦下。

检方指出，陈男和C男通过转售并出口74台服务器，扣除货款后取得2120万5531美元不法所得。

检方依各被告涉案程度和犯后态度，分别求处一年六个月至五年不等的监禁。其中，英伟达台湾张姓员工被认为是本案“放行B300 GPU的核心人物”，刻意隐瞒买方资金不足及货款来自大陆公司的事实，犯后还试图推诿卸责，因此检方要求法院判处法定最高刑五年监禁。

两名美超微台湾员工则被指为赚取高额业绩奖金，明知服务器销往大陆仍配合完成订单，分别取得约6万3000美元和8万4000美元奖金。检方也要求法院分别判处两人五年监禁。

检方批评，涉案人员“为图暴利，上下相互勾结”，非法出口高端服务器，不仅增加企业合规成本，也严重损害台湾国际形象。美国自2022年起收紧先进半导体对华出口管制，未经许可不得向中国大陆出口或销售受管制晶片。

The State Department is cracking down on a popular form of visa fraud through a sophisticated worldwide operation that has already revoked hundreds of visas.

The department’s spokesman, Tommy Pigott, told Fox News Digital that under the direction of President Donald Trump, the American government is partnering with agencies across the globe to halt the practice of birth tourism.

Birth tourism refers to travel to the United States for the primary purpose of giving birth so a child can obtain U.S. citizenship. The practice has been linked to visa-fraud schemes in which applicants conceal or misrepresent the purpose of their travel, often while seeking entry on visitor visas. A U.S.-citizen child may also create future immigration options for family members, including the ability to petition for a parent after turning 21.

It has also become a for-profit industry, where facilitators of the fraud market their services for helping women break America’s laws through “birth in the U.S.” services, including arranging visa scams to get women into the country.

“The first step in that is identifying them,” Pigott said. “We have consular officers around the world that work with international partners, that work for law enforcement officials to identify patterns that indicate a birth tourism network, and then when that is identified, we take actions such as revoking their visas, which was the recent announcement that we made, to make sure that we’re dismantling those networks.”

Through the task force, government officials are now analyzing in real time travel trends by visa holders around the world that are indicative of the practice.

In one recent case, a woman who came to the United States on a tourist visa under the impetus of a weeks-long vacation, continuously received visits from her partner, who lived outside the country. That pattern raised officials’ suspicions, who understood the partner’s movements as visits to the United States to support the woman in the latter stages of her pregnancy and possibly present in the country during the child’s birth.

“That was an indication that this was actually a birth tourism effort here, and we were able to take action to revoke those visas,” said Pigott. “So we’re able to analyze those travel patterns, analyze those instances that indicate fraud, look into those, and the task force we have allows us to take that action.

Pigott provided some examples of the blatant fraud.

“There were some advertisements that were being published talking about a world without borders or automatic guaranteed citizenship in their advertisements while they were pretending to offer health care services,” he said. “In reality, that is fraud, and the fraud actually doesn’t just end when it has to do with the birth tourism example of lying to the consular officer.”

“These networks are set up in the United States and then further coach these individuals on how to not pay their medical bills,” he continued. “So you have fraud when you enter the United States and then the American taxpayer is left footing the bill. Under President Joe Biden, an estimated 10 million people crossed the border into the United States illegally.

两名联合国维和人员在南苏丹遭遇袭击，不幸遇难，另有七人受伤。

法新社报道，联合国南苏丹特派团星期一（8月24日）发声明说，袭击发生在琼莱州（Jonglei），导致两名维和人员丧生，另有七人受伤。

伤者中包括三名维和人员、两名南苏丹国家警察部队人员，以及两名文职工作人员。

声明说，袭击由不明身份的武装分子发起，并称这类袭击可能构成战争罪。

联合国南苏丹特派团负责人格贝霍（Anita Kiki Gbeho）对这起事件表示强烈谴责，并向遇难维和人员的家属和亲人致以深切慰问。
