Texas Democrat says his goal would be to actually pass articles of impeachment, unlike Green’s unsuccessful attempts

Rep. Christian Menefee, D-Texas, pledged to continue efforts to impeach President Donald Trump, spearheaded by Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, even as he wages a campaign to take his seat.

However, Menefee promised that his impeachment attempts would stand more of a chance of winning over party support.

“I’m the candidate in this race who has a track record of standing up for my community, of fighting back and doing so effectively in a way that gets things done,” Menefee said in an interview with Fox News Digital.

Menefee, who won a special election in January to fill the seat of the late Rep. Sylvester Turner, is taking on Green in a heated primary contest. Turner died while in office in March 2025.

The two Democrats were put on a collision course last year when Republicans advanced redistricting plans in Texas set to eliminate as many as five Democrat-held seats. Green announced that he would pursue reelection in the 18th District — the seat Menefee took in January.

Although Menefee declined to specifically address his thoughts on Green and his impeachment attempts, he said his own efforts would center on winning over enough support to have them clear the House of Representatives.

“My approach is going to be, when I file articles of impeachment, my goal is for them to either pass or to get very close to passing,” Menefee said.

“That means collaborating with the other members of the Democratic caucus to make sure that it’s going to be effective. My approach is generally, if I start something, I am doing it because I want to ultimately take it across the finish line in a way that’s going to actually help people.”

HOUSE GOP MOVES TO CENSURE DEM WHO DISRUPTED TRUMP ADDRESS FOR 2ND STRAIGHT YEAR

None of Green’s impeachment efforts have cleared the chamber.

His most recent attempt in December attracted the support of 140 Democrats. Notably, 23 voted with Republicans to kill the measure and 47 voted present.

Menefee’s promises to continue pushing for Trump’s impeachment continue Green’s legacy even as the Democratic newcomer has stressed unity and pragmatism over the political purity tests Green has offered in the past.

Green, a 20-year veteran in Congress, has made opposition to Trump his defining characteristic in recent years. He made headlines in 2026 for being ejected from Trump’s State of the Union Address for bringing a sign with the phrase “Black people aren’t apes.”

Green was also removed from the 2025 State of the Union after he refused to take his seat while waving his cane at the president.

In his most recent attempt, Green framed his impeachments as a sort of litmus test for his own party — to see where they stood on whether Trump had committed high crimes or misdemeanors.

“We have to participate. This is a participatory democracy. The impeachment requires the hands and the guidance of all of us,” Green said in November 2025 as he announced his December attempt.

Outside groups also praised Green for being willing to put the question to Democrats in Congress. Dave Mytych, outreach lead at For Liberation and Resistance Everywhere (FLARE), praised Green’s latest efforts.

“This is what the American people want. They want fighters that hold the line. Democrats, are you listening? Leader Schumer, are you listening? Leader Jeffries, are you listening?” Mytych said, calling out several high-ranking Democrats.

When asked about those messaging votes, Menefee said his focus would be different.

“If I’m spending time on it, it’s because I’m trying to get something done. My goal in filing impeachment articles is going to be to impeach the President of the United States, no other goal,” Menefee said.

With neither candidate having captured a majority of the vote in the initial Texas primary elections earlier this month, Green and Menefee will face off in a runoff election on May 26.

6 of 7 Iranian soccer players granted asylum in Australia stay but rest of team heads home

    March 11, 2026 / 6:12 AM EDT / CBS/AP

Gold Coast, Australia — The Iranian women’s soccer team left Australia minus seven of its members who were granted asylum, after tearful protests of their departure at Sydney Airport and frantic final efforts inside the terminal by Australian officials who sought to ensure the women understood they were being offered asylum.

As the team’s flight time drew nearer and they passed through security late Tuesday, each woman was taken aside to meet alone with officials who explained through interpreters that they could choose not to return to Iran.

Seven other women earlier accepted humanitarian visas allowing them to remain permanently in Australia. Eventually, after what Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke described as “emotional” meetings, no more women accepted the offers of asylum and the team’s flight departed Sydney with all remaining members on board.

The tense and precarious nature of their decisions was underscored Wednesday when Burke announced one of the seven who had stayed behind would return home after all.

“In Australia, people are able to change their mind,” said Burke, who had hours earlier posted photos of the seven women granted humanitarian visas to his social media accounts, their identities clearly visible.

It was a dramatic conclusion to an episode that has gripped Australia since the Iranian team’s first game at the Asian Cup soccer tournament, when they remained silent during their national anthem. The players sang the anthem before subsequent games and haven’t publicly disclosed their views or explained their actions.

Their silence was cast as a gesture of defiance or protest by some, and an act of mourning by others.

“When those players were silent at the start of their first match in Australia, that silence was heard as a roar all around the world,” Burke said. “We responded by saying, the invitation is there. In Australia you can be safe.”

The team arrived in Australia last month, before the Iran war began Feb. 28. Iran was knocked out of the tournament over the weekend and the squad faced the prospect of returning to a country under bombardment.

The women’s fate captured international attention as Iranian Australian groups warned they could face dire consequences from Iran’s theocratic government for failing to sing the anthem, even as the players remained silent on the gesture’s meaning or their own concerns about returning. There was further outrage in Australia on Wednesday after news outlets published a photo that appeared to show a women being led by the wrist by a teammate to the bus bound for the airport, another squad member’s hand at her shoulder.

President Trump waded into the matter Monday, criticizing the Australian government for not offering the women asylum and saying in a post on his Truth Social platform, “The U.S. will take them if you won’t.”

It emerged the next day that discussions between Australian officials and the women had already been unfolding privately.

Meanwhile, an Iranian official rejected suggestions that the women weren’t safe to go home.

“Iran welcomes its children with open arms and the government guarantees their security,” Iranian first Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref said Tuesday. “No one has the right to interfere in the family affairs of the Iranian nation and play the role of a nanny who is kinder than a mother,” he added.

Iranian state TV said the country’s football federation had asked international soccer bodies to review what it called the U.S. president’s “direct political interference in football,” warning such remarks could disrupt the 2026 World Cup.

Australian officials have sought to assure the public that the women were given every opportunity to stay. But as one woman’s decision to return home despite accepting asylum showed, the reality wasn’t so simple.

After days of overtures from officials, Burke said, the efforts to ensure each team member had the chance to consider asylum offers came down to last-minute discussions at Sydney Airport, where the women were separated from their minders and had time to phone their families before deciding whether to leave.

“Everything was about ensuring the dignity for those individuals to make a choice,” he said. “We couldn’t take away the pressure of the context for these individuals, of what might have been said to them beforehand, what pressures they might have felt there were on other family members.”

No further members of the squad decided to remain in Australia before the flight departed, however, and Burke said “exhausted” officials feared they had failed the women.

“As a nation, what mattered was that we could provide the choice,” he said.

On Wednesday, many newspaper front pages bore a photo of the women who had accepted asylum offers under headlines like “Brave new Aussies.” But just hours later, Burke said that one of the women would return to Iran after conversations with her departed teammates.

“Unfortunately, in making that decision she was advised by her teammates and coach to contact the Iranian embassy and to get collected,” he said. “As a result of that, it meant that the Iranian embassy now knew the location of where everybody was.”

The six women planning to remain in Australia were immediately moved to a different location for security reasons, the minister said. He pledged they would not have to fight a legal battle for permanent residency and would receive health, housing and other support in Australia.

Some of the squad, who officials said had connections to Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, were not offered visas.

“There were some people leaving Australia who I am glad they’re no longer in Australia,” Burke said.

It wasn’t clear exactly how many people were in the delegation, but an official squad list named 26 players, plus coaching and other staff. The Asian Football Confederation, which organized the tournament, confirmed Wednesday that the squad had traveled from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where they were staying in a hotel.

“The AFC will provide all necessary support to the team during their stay until their onward travel arrangements are confirmed,” a statement said, adding that the body would “continue to prioritise the welfare and safety of the players and officials.”

The initial five players granted asylum had been staying in a safe location after fleeing their hotel, Iranian opposition figure and exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi said Sunday.

The office of Pahlavi, whose father, the Western-backed Shah, was ousted during the Islamic Revolution in 1979, said on social media that the “courageous athletes” announced that “they have joined Iran’s national Lion and Sun Revolution” — a reference to the pre-Islamic Revolution flag of Iran — and naming them in the post.

Tom Cotton puts Biden on notice while demanding answers on draining of nation’s oil stockpile

GOP senator says 180 million barrel release in 2022 drained Strategic Petroleum Reserve to 40-year low

FIRST ON FOX: A top Senate Republican wants answers on why the Biden administration drained the nation’s oil stockpile but did little to replenish it.

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., charged that decisions under President Joe Biden to tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) could have a ripple effect as the U.S. continues its war with Iran and as the Iranian government continues its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz.

Cotton, in a letter first obtained by Fox News Digital to Department of Energy Secretary Chris Wright, charged that the Biden administration released 180 million barrels from the nation’s reserves in 2022 “to suppress gas prices ahead of the midterm elections.”

“That decision drained the reserve to a 40-year low,” Cotton wrote. “The decision to drain the SPR was not a response to a supply emergency; it was a deliberate political act designed to protect Democrats from the consequences of their own failed energy policies.”

Biden tapped the reserve twice — once in 2021 to relieve soaring fuel prices as the nation still grappled with the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic and again the following year to combat increased energy costs at the onset of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

The SPR has capacity for over 700 million barrels of crude oil, but currently, the reserve has far less following the drawdown under the previous administration.

At the end of Biden’s term, the reserve had about 415 million barrels of crude on hand, according to data from the Department of Energy.

Cotton said that it wasn’t “the first time Democrats undermined the reserve” and noted that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and congressional Democrats blocked President Donald Trump’s bid to refill the SPR in 2020, when barrels were cheap, with $3 billion from a colossal COVID-19 stimulus package moving through Congress.

Cotton demanded that Wright answer how blocking the $3 billion oil purchase and halting oil and gas leases impacted the nation’s overall domestic supplies that could have been used to replenish the SPR.

Meanwhile, congressional Democrats are demanding that Trump tap into the SPR after oil prices spiked to four-year highs over the weekend as the war in Iran intensifies.

Schumer said that the reserve “exists for moments exactly like this.”

“The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s most important oil transit choke point, with roughly 20% of global petroleum liquids consumption moving through it in recent years,” Cotton said. “That is precisely why the SPR must be treated as a strategic national security asset, not a political tool.”

(Hawaii Fishermen’s Alliance for Conservation and Tradition)主席菲尔·费尔南德斯(Phil Fernandez)表示,“鱼市场不会收购有咬痕的鱼。”

Sharks are taking a bigger bite of fishermen’s catch in Hawaii: “Paying the tax man”

    2026-03-11T06:15:00-0400 / CBS News

    Updated on: March 11, 2026 / 6:21 AM EDT / AP

In recent years, local small-boat fishers who pursue prized bottomfish such as ehu, onaga and the red opakapaka that’s popular on table spreads across Hawaii each New Year’s have seen a troubling spike in sharks that swoop in and tear their catch off the hook.

“They’re basically losing money because they can’t bring in the fish,” said PhilFernandez, president of the advocacy group Hawaii Fishermen’s Alliance for Conservation and Tradition. “The fish markets won’t buy a fish that has a bite on it.”

The growing incidents, known as shark depredation, have grown so common in Hawaii’s coastal waters and other parts of the Pacific, he said, that many of those bottomfishers, trollers and others who rely on the catch for their livelihood are on the verge of giving up the trade.

Some fishers call such depredation “paying the tax man,” and the tax is growing. Reports indicate sharks now bite off catch in at least 1 of every 4 licensed fishing trips out on Hawaiian waters. The rates are currently at their highest on record in the 20 or so years the state has been collecting that data, aquatic biologist Bryan Ishida said.

Various shark repellents that exploit the animals’ aversion to certain chemicals, electric charges and magnetic fields are already for sale and used by ocean swimmers and fishers in other regions, such as Florida, where recreational fishing is a big draw.

However, researchers and fishers in the Pacific have only just started testing those repellents to see which types and designs might work best locally. So far, the results have been mixed.

“Personally, I didn’t really know anything about the Western Pacific, and so I would love to get out there and test,” said Eric Stroud, a managing partner with the research and development company SharkDefense, which makes chemical repellents.

He’s interested in getting to Guam in particular because incidents there are especially high. He wants to study how people there fish and see how his company could supply them with repellents.

Shark depredation was among the most pressing issues that fishers around the Pacific raised during a series of listening sessions that the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council held last year. The group held a follow-up workshop in February on efforts to further address the problem and plans to report on the findings at Wespac’s next Scientific and Statistical Committee meeting March 17.

Meanwhile, scientists with the University of Hawaii Mānoa’s Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology are training local fishers to use forensic DNA kits on torn and bitten fish to trace which shark species nabbed their catch.

They’re also tracking shark movements over time to see how often they visit key fishing grounds, institute officials said, to ultimately try and reduce those encounters with small-boat fishers.

“We are building the first truly comprehensive effort,” institute research professor Carl Meyer said in an emailed summary, “to understand and mitigate shark depredation in these fisheries.”

Similar incidents of sharks stealing fish have unfolded in California, Massachusetts and South Carolina.

    Magnetic fields and stinky erpellants

Fernandez, who’s been troll-fishing off the Kona Coast since the late 1980s, said shark depredation wasn’t an issue on Hawaii island when he started fishing there. The incidents only started to emerge in the past 20 years, he said, and then grew into a serious concern for small-boat fishers in the past several years.

It’s still not clear what’s causing the uptick in plundering, Stroud and others said. Some suspect it’s related to warming waters due to climate change driving the fish that sharks prey on to different areas.

“There’s a lot of speculation,” Fernandez said. Many fishermen think the local reef, Galapagos and tiger sharks as well as pelagic oceanic whitetips that visit the area have learned to associate small fishing boats with an easy way to grab a meal.

Small boats that frequent the Penguin Banks fishing grounds — which are off of Molokaʻi — now constantly move around to avoid sharks spotted nearby. Some fishers turn off their engines the moment they catch a fish, Fernandez added, because they’re worried sharks connect the sound of the propeller to an easy meal.

“Sharks,” he said, “are very smart.”

They also have a unique sensitivity to magnetic fields that the ahi and other fish species sought by fishers don’t have. Developers have made products that use magnets and metal alloys to create magnetic fields in the water as a result to repel the sharks when they get within a few feet.

The magnetic fields can be very effective, Stroud said — akin to flashing a bright light in their eyes.

What’s needed to succeed, he said, is to design the repellents so they’re affordable and work seamlessly with the fishing gear used across various regions. Some of those tests have started off the Kona Coast, Fernandez said, but so far the electromagnetic repellents they’ve used aren’t very practical for fishing there.

“They’re too long and they’re the wrong shape,” he said. “The hooks tend to wrap around these devices, and now the hooks are all tangled up. So it’s a work in progress.”

Other repellents produce an electric charge in the water near the hook and bait, and Stroud said those devices tend to cost between $150 and $300 apiece.

Stroud’s company produces a chemical repellant that smells like decaying sharks. Some of the chemicals are synthetic, he said, but much of it is harvested from sharks caught legally off the Florida coast. In Hawaii, all shark fishing is prohibited.

The SharkDefense chemicals are part of a butter-like material, Stroud said, that’s either mixed into fishing chum or placed in a cage by the hook to melt in the water. It costs about $1 per hook, he said.

It might make sense, Stroud added, to use multiple types of repellants because sharks can sometimes “turn off” a sense temporarily when they get too stimulated or overwhelmed. If the shark turns off its electromagnetic sense, he said, the chemical repellent could work as a backup.

Mark Fitchett, a pelagic fisheries scientist, said local small-boat fishers hold a range of views on the sharks and their growing depredation. Many of them are fed up and believe the sharks benefit from too many environmental protections, Fitchett said, but other fishers see the changes as the cost of having a relatively healthy ecosystem.

“A lot of them also recognize that it’s part of their island culture that these animals are sort of … the gardeners of the water,” he said. “So there’s that respect for the animal.”

Now, Fitchett said, the question is how much depredation they can accept and still keep going.

Wespac will further discuss the issue at its next quarterly meeting, March 24-26, at the Ala Moana Hotel. Fitchett said the council plans to release a more detailed report on the situation several weeks after the meeting.
