FDA warns manufacturer that billionaire’s claims about cancer drug Anktiva are misleading

    Updated on: March 25, 2026 / 6:09 AM EDT / CBS/AP

Washington — Federal health officials posted a warning Tuesday about misleading statements made by biotech billionaire Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, who recently told podcast listeners his company’s bladder cancer drug may be able to treat, cure or even prevent other types of cancers.

The warning letter from the Food and Drug Administration takes issue with a TV advertisement and a separate podcast episode promoting Anktiva, the lead product of ImmunityBio Inc. The drugmaker is one of several biotech firms acquired by Soon-Shiong, who also owns the Los Angeles Times.

The “FDA has determined that the TV ad and podcast are false or misleading,” the letter says. … “Furthermore, the TV ad and podcast provide evidence that Anktiva is intended for new uses for which it lacks approval, and for which its labeling does not provide adequate directions for use.”

Company shares fell more than 21% in Tuesday trading to close at $7.42 after the FDA letter was posted online.

Anktiva was approved by the FDA in 2024 for patients with a hard-to-treat form of bladder cancer. ImmunityBio has been working to win FDA approval to expand the drug’s use to a number of other conditions, including forms of lung and pancreatic cancer.

Soon-Shiong’s controversial statements came during a January episode of “The Sean Spicer Show” podcast titled “Is the FDA blocking life-saving cancer treatments?”

At one point during the interview, Soon-Shiong described his company’s drug as “the most important molecule that could cure cancer.” A few minutes later, Soon-Shiong, who is the company’s executive chairman and chief medical officer, said that while the drug is approved for bladder cancer, “it actually can treat all cancers.”

1/1 Skip Ad Continue watching after the ad

Later in the episode he said, “We have the therapy to prevent cancer if you were exposed to radiation, and that’s Anktiva.”

FDA regulators said the statements violate federal drug marketing rules because they “create a misleading impression” of the drug.

Regulators also noted that the podcast didn’t contain any information about risks and side effects of the drug, which can include urinary tract infections, pain, chills and pyrexia. Under FDA law, drug promotions are required to give a balanced view of a drug’s risks and benefits.

The FDA warning, addressed to ImmunityBio CEO Richard Adcock, raises similar concerns with a TV advertisement for Anktiva. Both the ad and the podcast refer to the company’s drug as a “cancer vaccine,” which the FDA said is false.

The letter gives the company 15 days to correct the problems and respond to the agency in writing about its plans to comply. By Tuesday afternoon, a link to the podcast had been removed from ImmunityBio’s website.

Sarah Singleton, spokesperson for Culver City, California-based ImmunityBio, said via email that the company takes the FDA’s warning “very seriously” and plans to “work cooperatively with the agency to address the matters raised in the letter.”

Under the Trump administration, the FDA has stepped up warnings against drugmakers as well as online pharmacies, including appearances by company executives on TV shows and podcasts.

    By Alex Miller |

Chicago killing reignites sanctuary city fight as Angel parent heads to Senate hearing

By Alex Miller | Fox News
    Published March 25, 2026 6:00am EDT

FIRST ON FOX: An Angel parent is set to testify before the Senate on Wednesday as Republicans intensify scrutiny of sanctuary city policies after the fatal shooting of Chicago student Sheridan Gorman, allegedly by an illegal immigrant.

Joe Abraham, whose daughter was killed in a hit-and-run crash involving an illegal immigrant last year, is set to testify before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Consitution on Wednesday about sanctuary city laws, which he says led to the deaths of his daughter, Katie Abraham, and Gorman.

“An 18-year-old college student — someone just beginning life — has been killed,” Abraham wrote in a Fox News Digital opinion piece on Tuesday. “And once again, the circumstances raise the same painful questions about policy, enforcement and accountability.”

Joe Abraham holds a photograph of himself with his 20-year-old daughter, Katie Abraham, at his family’s home in Glenview, Illinois, on Sept. 10, 2025.(Stacey Wescott/Chicago Tribune/Tribune News Service via Getty Images)

“Once again, we are confronted with the possibility that this tragedy, like the one that took my daughter, might have been prevented,” he continued.

Abraham’s daughter was killed when a drunk illegal immigrant crashed into her vehicle and fled the scene. Julio Cucul-Bol was later arrested and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Authorities said Cucul-Bol, from Guatemala, had previously been deported from the U.S. in 2016.

The hearing, titled Protecting American Citizenship II: Federalism, Sanctuary Cities, and the Rule of Law, will be led by Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., who chairs the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution.

Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., will lead a hearing on sanctuary city policies following the slaying of Sheridan Gorman.(Heather Diehl/Getty Images)

Schmitt told Fox News Digital that the hearing had been in the works before Gorman’s death, but noted, “sadly, you have these policies in place, this is not going to be the last time.”

“I think it’s important to highlight in the hearing of what does it means [when] people hear the term [sanctuary cities], what does it mean? It means that sanctuary jurisdictions are just not going to tell ICE when criminals, including rapists and murderers, are being released from jail in prison,” Schmitt said. “That’s insane.”

Schmitt had just come from the Senate floor Tuesday evening where he read a portion of a statement from the Gorman family. Schmitt said he had not spoken with the family, but said, “as a dad, I can only imagine the grief that they’re feeling.”

“When you send your daughter off to college, it’s just not what you expect, and it’s totally preventable,” Schmitt said.

The hearing will focus on the legal and policy issues surrounding sanctuary cities and how those policies affect federal immigration enforcement, public safety and the constitutional balance between federal and state authorities.

It will also be the first hearing on sanctuary city policies following Gorman’s death. Her alleged killer, 25-year-old Jose Medina-Medina, a Venezuelan national, was arrested on Friday in connection with the Chicago shooting, and faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder.

Medina-Medina was taken into custody twice in 2023 under the Biden administration, once by U.S. Border Patrol and again for shoplifting in Illinois. He was released both times, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker’s policies will likely be a focal point of scrutiny during the hearing, which will feature former Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares and Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, as witnesses alongside Abraham.

Abraham has also demanded answers over Pritzker’s policies.

In a separate opinion piece for Fox News Digital, Abraham wrote that he sent a letter to Pritzker seeking answers “about the sanctuary policies he champions.”

“I asked for a response by January 19, 2026, the one-year anniversary of Katie’s death,” Abraham wrote. “To this day, I have received nothing.”

Bright green fireball captured on video in Pacific Northwest sky as another meteor streaks across U.S.

    Updated on: March 25, 2026 / 6:36 AM EDT / CBS/AP

Jason Jenkins was driving to work before dawn when a bright green streak beamed across the sky.

The camera on his dashboard captured the moment at 6:06 a.m. Monday while he was in southwestern Washington state about 20 miles north of Portland, Oregon. Initially he thought it might be a comet, but then figured it was too close to be one.

“It kind of reminded me of a lightning strike because it was so bright,” he said. “The video doesn’t do justice on how bright and close it seemed.”

What Jenkins saw was a fireball, a particularly bright meteor that can be seen up to 80 miles above the Earth, according to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in Portland.

Fireballs have been spotted in the skies across the U.S. in recent days.

An apparent meteor lit up the skies over Northern California over the weekend, drawing hundreds of reports from viewers across the region, CBS Sacramento reported.

Last week a 7-ton meteor sped across the Ohio sky in a fireball that broke apart in a thunderous boom that startled residents who feared an explosion. NASA said eyewitnesses from 10 states, Washington, D.C., and the Canadian province of Ontario reported seeing the fireball.

“Some fragments, some tiny pieces of it, actually made it to the ground,” Bill Cooke, the head of NASA’s Meteoroid Environments Office, told CBS News.

On Saturday, a meteor traveling 35,000 miles per hour broke apart north of Houston, according to NASA, and the meteorite was originally about 1 ton and three feet across. The disintegration caused booms heard by some in the area, the agency said, and a resident told local TV news outlet ABC13 that a piece of the meteor crashed through her roof.

Green fireballs like the one Jenkins saw are often due to the presence of magnesium, which emits a bright blue-green light when heated and vaporized in the Earth’s atmosphere, the museum said. Nickel can also contribute to a green color.

Its altitude in the dark early morning sky made it widely visible, said Jim Todd, the museum’s director of space science education.

“It was bright, it was green, it was spectacular,” he said Monday. “One tiny little piece of rock put on such a show this morning.”

With the video and other people reporting sightings, it may be possible to determine the direction the fireball was traveling and whether it landed on the Earth’s surface. In most cases, it’s rare that a fireball makes contact with the Earth, and when it does, it can be hard to locate, Todd said.

“Even if it does survive, it looks like a common everyday rock, and nearly almost impossible to find, unless it hit a house or a street or leaves debris behind,” he said.

As the number of people with cameras on their dashboards and doorbells has grown, so have reports of such sightings, he added.

Jenkins said that while he got his dashcam in case of an accident, it was “cool to catch something like that.”

“I won’t go without a dashcam ever again,” he said. “I need to go buy a lottery ticket now.”

ICE agents have been deployed to airports. Are the polls next?

    2026-03-25T09:00:33.876Z / CNN

The high-profile deployment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to airports has renewed support on the right and fear on the left about the possibility of ICE going to the polls in November.

Steve Bannon is urging President Donald Trump — who surprised officials in his own administration this weekend by ordering ICE agents to airports to help alleviate long lines — to treat that move as a dress rehearsal for the 2026 midterms, arguing the same armed officers should ultimately be positioned around polling places.

“We can use this as a test run — a test case — to really perfect ICE’s involvement in the 2026 midterm election,” Bannon, a longtime Trump ally, said Monday on his “War Room” podcast, reiterating his past calls for a law enforcement presence at the polls.

While Bannon holds no official role in the administration, his remarks reignited concerns among some election officials and Democratic lawmakers who fear the Trump administration could try to use ICE as a political weapon — intimidating voters and potentially suppressing turnout in November. They argue that kind of presence at polling sites could run afoul of federal law.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, a Democrat, told CNN’s Dana Bash on Tuesday that the airport deployment fits what he sees as a broader strategy: using the military and federal law enforcement to help Trump hold power — including, potentially, during the midterms.

“These are all tools of how the president is trying to think about a much larger plan, which is, if you cannot hold onto power through democratic elections, then adjust democratic elections,” Moore told CNN.

Arizona Democratic Secretary of State Adrian Fontes said he’s brushing off Bannon’s comments until something “official” emerges. But he noted Republicans in Arizona’s state legislature recently proposed requiring federal immigration agents at every polling place, drop box and early voting site in 2026 — an idea that never advanced.

“It’s perfectly well acknowledged that ICE is not permitted in our polling places,” Fontes told CNN. “If there is overreach, we’re going to meet it with every lever of power that we have.”

Federal law bars deploying federal “troops or armed men” to polling places, except to repel “armed enemies of the United States.” Elections are run by states, despite Trump’s calls to “nationalize” voting in certain places.

“Sending ICE or any federal agents to interfere in elections or intimidate voters would be unlawful, and I am confident that courts would step in,” said Wendy Weiser, vice president for democracy at the left-leaning Brennan Center for Justice. “There’s certainly a reason to be worried when these outlandish threats are made. But there’s also a lot of reason to be calm.”

    Administration pushback

Even as Bannon and other Trump allies escalate the rhetoric, some administration officials have dismissed the idea as a Democratic fever dream.

In a call with state election officials last month, Heather Honey — a longtime election skeptic who is now a senior election integrity official at the Department of Homeland Security — said the administration would not send ICE agents to polling places this year. A group of Democratic secretaries of state later pressed the administration for that pledge in writing.

But some Trump officials have avoided closing the door completely, suggesting federal agents could be deployed if there were an alleged threat at voting sites.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters last month that it’s “not something I’ve ever heard the president consider,” adding, “I can’t guarantee that an ICE agent won’t be around a polling location in November. I mean, that’s frankly a very silly hypothetical question.”

At his confirmation hearing last week, Sen. Markwayne Mullin — who was sworn in Tuesday to replace Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem — did not rule out the possibility.

“The only reason why my officers would be there is if there was a specific threat for them to be there, not for intimidation,” Mullin told lawmakers. “Then we will work with local law enforcement. There will be a reason for us to be there, and it’ll be known why we’re there.”

Noem previously offered similar noncommittal answers to lawmakers, saying DHS had “no plans” to station immigration officers at polling locations — while also echoing a common Republican line of attack: If noncitizens aren’t supposed to vote, why would Democrats object to immigration enforcement nearby?

“Do you plan on illegal aliens voting in our elections, senator?” Noem asked one Democratic lawmaker during a hearing earlier this month. “There should be no need to, unless you plan on illegals voting.”

Research and election audits have consistently found noncitizen voting is exceedingly rare. Still, some Republican lawmakers have pushed back on the concerns about ICE at the polls.

“Why should you ban ICE from being at polling places?” GOP Rep. Jason Smith said last month. “Because illegals aren’t supposed to vote in this America.”

‘We have to prepare for the worst’

Voting rights advocates say that the threat alone could deter some Americans from voting — especially in immigrant communities — and point to recent ICE operations in places like Minneapolis where federal officers clashed with and detained US citizens as well as undocumented migrants.

A recent NBC News poll found 38% of registered voters view ICE positively, while 56% view it negatively.

Behind the scenes, state election officials and voting rights groups say they’re drawing up backup plans — prepping court challenges in case of deployments, coordinating with local law enforcement, and training poll workers on how to defuse tense situations.

Several Democrat-led states are moving to preemptively ban federal immigration agents from polling places. New Mexico became the first to enact such a law this month, barring armed officers “in the civil, military or naval service of the United States” from polling sites or within 50 feet of a ballot box from the start of early voting.

“We have to prepare for the worst,” Maine Democratic Secretary of State Shenna Bellows told CNN. “Federal law, the Constitution and state law are on our side, and we will fight to protect voters rights and a safe and secure election in 2026.”

Some argue the back-and-forth itself may be part of the strategy: even if a broad ICE presence at polling places never materializes, the talk of it can still do damage by sowing fear and keeping voters at home.

“I think that there is an attempt to use rhetoric around ICE at the polls to stoke fear,” said Danielle Lang, vice president for voting rights and rule of law at the Campaign Legal Center. “I just want voters to know there’s no reason to believe that there’s going to be law enforcement at the polls. The laws have not changed.”

These threats come amid a broader push by the administration to expand federal influence over elections. Trump allies are eager for the president to declare a national emergency tied to elections and impose strict federal oversight of the 2026 midterms.

The Justice Department, meanwhile, is suing more than two dozen states seeking their unredacted voter data — a move critics describe as federal overreach. Trump officials say voter lists already turned over by some states show hundreds of thousands of registrations that shouldn’t be on the rolls, but they have not released the data or other evidence to substantiate the claim.
