“与此同时,本届政府已采取多项重大行动,缓解短期 disruption(注:原文如此,应为“中断”)并稳定能源市场。”

Energy markets start tuning Trump out after repeated Iran war whiplash

    2026-04-02 4:00 PM ET / CNN

    By Adam Cancryn

President Donald Trump has repeatedly sought to tamp down the surging price of oil by telling investors what they’re eager to hear: The war in Iran is almost over.

But after hearing that message for weeks, with fighting ongoing and no plan for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, they’re increasingly tuning him out.

Nearly two weeks after Trump’s sudden declaration of “productive” talks with Iran sent a premature jolt of optimism through the oil markets, energy analysts and traders say the president’s attempts to jawbone investors into lowering prices have cost him his credibility — and convinced them that the war’s economic consequences are only set to worsen.

“He’s now been saying a version of the same thing for the last two weeks,” said Gregory Brew, a senior analyst on Iran and the energy sector at political risk firm Eurasia Group. “But what he’s talking about doesn’t matter, because he’s continuing the war and the Iranians aren’t buying it.”

After Trump again claimed Wednesday that Iran was seeking a ceasefire, oil markets exhausted by days of head fakes barely reacted. And that night, Trump’s insistence that the war was “nearly complete” was quickly overshadowed by his vow to intensify the US’ bombing campaign and then leave it to other countries to try to reopen the strait.

Oil prices have since surged more than 11% in response — a sharp move likely to push the cost of gas beyond the $4-per-gallon level and deepen the affordability concerns that threaten to cost Trump and Republicans control of Congress come November.

Within the energy industry, officials are now preparing for several more months of elevated oil and gas prices regardless of how and when Trump eventually decides to withdraw from the war, as the damage to global stockpiles becomes irreversible and reverberates across continents.

Iran’s retaliatory closure of the Strait of Hormuz roughly a month ago has already caused a massive economic shock, but the strain on economies around the world is just beginning. Key Middle East production facilities that cut output to avoid a pileup of oil in the Persian Gulf will need months to ramp back up if and when traffic through the strait returns to normal.

And while Trump during Wednesday’s primetime address claimed the US is insulated from the fallout due to its own vast stores of oil, the energy crisis rippling through the rest of the world is still bound to make all manner of goods and services — from fertilizer to flights to plastic products — more expensive for Americans. Even if Trump pulled out of the Middle East immediately, investors believe it could take months or even years to see oil return to pre-war prices.

“We’ve lost huge amounts of oil from the system,” said Rory Johnston, an oil market researcher who writes the energy newsletter Commodity Context. He pegged the cost of the conflict so far at roughly a half-billion barrels of oil.

“In no scenario do I see us exiting this war in a healthier environment than we began it,” he added.

The stark economic reality has alarmed Trump allies who were already concerned about the political risks of going to war. It has prompted an ongoing search for fresh ways to blunt the impact on US prices.

Some Trump friends and allies — aware of the president’s diminished ability to simply talk the markets down — have urged him to wrap up the war as soon as possible and shift his attention back to the domestic concerns shaping voters’ views ahead of the midterm elections.

And despite the White House’s insistence that gas prices will “plummet” as soon as the fighting ends, administration officials have signaled differently in private. They’ve pressed industry representatives over whether US companies have any new sources of oil they can tap in the coming months, a person involved in the discussions said. Those conversations have yielded little in the way of promising leads.

“It’s having a negative effect now for sure,” Stephen Moore, a former economic adviser to Trump, said of the war’s drag on the US economy. “So it’s got to get over with as quickly as possible.”

In a statement, White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said Trump’s “energy dominance agenda prepared us to meet this moment.”

“The President made clear that the Operation Epic Fury is in its final stages and we are quickly achieving our military goals,” she said. “In the meantime, the Administration has taken several significant actions to mitigate short-term disruptions and stabilize the energy markets.”

Still, among traders and analysts who once hung on Trump’s every word, there’s far less willingness to buy into his optimism now that they’re seeing more real-world impact.

If Trump declares victory and leaves the Middle East in the next few weeks without reopening the strait, he will effectively cede one-fifth of the world’s oil supply to Iran. That would put the regime on even stronger financial footing than before, allowing Iran to charge oil tankers a hefty toll to use the strait — and determine which country’s shipments get through.

Under that scenario, analysts project, oil prices are expected to remain above $90 per barrel well beyond the end of the war, or roughly one-third higher than where prices sat before the conflict began.

But other options could yield even worse outcomes. If Trump instead chooses to escalate and follow through on his threats to bomb Iran’s energy infrastructure, it would immediately worsen the oil shortage and fan fears of widespread retaliation — which could effectively shatter the global energy trade and push prices to never-before-seen highs.

Either way, energy experts said, oil prices are going to stay significantly higher than the $60-per-barrel level the US enjoyed earlier this year — and no amount of reassurances from Trump is likely to change that at this point.

“I don’t think there’s any going back to pre-war gas prices, at least not this year and probably not for a couple years,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics. “With each passing day, and the longer the hostilities continue, the more damage is done.”

Barring a sudden diplomatic breakthrough, those scenarios also provide little assurance that the Strait of Hormuz will fully reopen — a development that could dramatically alter the way oil flows around the world.

Top Trump officials have increasingly acknowledged that the strait will remain under Iranian control for the foreseeable future, potentially setting the stage for a second operation to seize it that would raise the odds of yet more disruption without any greater guarantee of success.

Trump on Wednesday night careened between insisting that the strait would “open up naturally” after the war and urging US allies to take responsibility for reopening it by force.

“The hard part is done, so it should be easy,” he said at one point.

Yet that’s offered little comfort to industry officials who have noted that even Trump’s own military doesn’t appear to concur; US officials have continued to assess that the strait is far too dangerous for the US Navy to begin escorting tankers, according to people involved in the discussions.

“Had the war been three or four days, then there would’ve been a sharp price increase and then a very sharp price fall,” said Brew. “But we’re way past that given that Hormuz has been shut now for over a month, and given that the credibility of Hormuz reopening any time soon is very suspect.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George to step down and take immediate retirement, sources familiar with the decision told CBS News.

One of the sources said Hegseth wants someone in the role who will implement President Trump and Hegseth’s vision for the Army.

Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a statement that George “will be retiring from his position as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army effective immediately. The Department of War is grateful for General George’s decades of service to our nation. We wish him well in his retirement.”

A senior Defense Department official told CBS News, “We are grateful for his service, but it was time for a leadership change in the Army.”

George previously served as the senior military assistant to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin from 2021 to 2022, during the Biden administration, after decades of service. A career infantry officer and West Point graduate, George first served in the first Gulf War and the more recent conflicts of Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Army chief of staff typically serves a four-year term. George was nominated for the position by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate in 2023, meaning he would typically have held the position until 2027.

The current vice chief of staff of the Army, Gen. Christopher LaNeve, who was formerly Hegseth’s military aide, will be acting Army chief of staff. He previously served as the commanding general of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division from 2022 to 2023.

Parnell said LaNeve is “a battle-tested leader with decades of operational experience and is completely trusted by Secretary Hegseth to carry out the vision of this administration without fault.”

The U.S. Military Academy at West Point posted photos on social media on Thursday of George, saying he “shared experience-driven guidance with cadets preparing to lead” during a visit on March 25.

According to his biography on the Army’s website, George received his commission as an infantry officer from West Point in 1988 and deployed during Operation Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Before serving as Army chief of staff, he was vice chief of staff of the Army from 2022 to 2023.

Hegseth has fired more than a dozen senior military officers, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. C.Q. Brown, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti, the Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. James Slife and the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Kruse.

The ouster follows Hegseth’s X post lifting the suspension of the aircrew that flew by Kid Rock’s house in Nashville last weekend. After the Army announced the suspension of the aviators involved and an administrative review, Hegseth overruled the Army, writing on his personal X account, “No punishment. No investigation. Carry on, patriots.”

Hegseth’s decision to ask George to exit wasn’t related to the helicopter incident, one of the sources said.

In its ruling, the panel said the lower court judge Matthew Barrett improperly punished Peters based on her protected speech – her claims of election fraud, which she maintained throughout her 2024 trial. The panel cited several things Barrett said at trial, including calling Peters a “charlatan” who continued to peddle “snake oil that’s been proven to be junk time and ‌time again.”

“The trial court’s comments about Peters’s belief in the existence of 2020 election fraud went beyond relevant considerations for her sentencing. Her offense was not her belief, however misguided the trial court deemed it to be, in the existence of such election fraud; it was her deceitful actions in her attempt to gather evidence of such fraud,” the panel wrote.

The panel gave no suggestion of what Peters’ sentence should be.

Peters was indicted in 2022 following an election security breach at her office that led to voting equipment passwords being posted on a right-wing blog. She denied wrongdoing.

Two attorneys for Peters, Peter Ticktin and John Case, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Trump pardoned Peters in December in a move that was considered symbolic since Peters is not in federal custody. The Colorado appeals court panel, in its ruling, wrote that a president’s federal pardon powers do not reach state offenses.

A first-of-its-kind weight loss pill will become the latest drug to be offered on President Trump’s cost comparison platform “Trump Rx,” CBS News exclusively learned.

Foundayo, a GLP-1 drug, is a first-of-its-kind weight loss pill that doesn’t need to be taken on an empty stomach, expanding access for those who are needle averse.

A White House official says TrumpRx, the low-cost pharmaceutical comparison website launched by the administration in February, will provide coupons for Foundayo to Americans without insurance starting at $149 for the first dose.

The refills will be marked at $199 and future prescriptions will be $299.

The pill will also be sold at a similar price on Eli Lilly’s direct to consumer platform “Lilly Direct.”

Though the prices are the same, a White House official tells CBS news they believe TrumpRx has a greater reach than the drugmaker’s platform and serves as a “one stop shop” for consumers to evaluate all GLP-1s on the market.

The cost for Americans on Medicare will be around $50 and Americans on private insurance for about $25.

A White House official told CBS News that the pill could be featured on TrumpRx as soon as Thursday.

Foundayo is also the first new drug approved under the FDA’s priority voucher program. The program, which was announced last June, was intended to shorten the time it takes to review drugs from 10 to 12 months down to just two months.

The FDA approved the Eli Lilly drug just 50 days after filing. The company plans to start shipping the pill on April 6.

Hegseth tells US Army chief of staff to step down immediately

US Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George has been told to retire immediately by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, a Pentagon official told CNN.

Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed George’s retirement Thursday, writing on X, “General Randy A. George will be retiring from his position as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army effective immediately. The Department of War is grateful for General George’s decades of service to our nation.”

CBS News first reported George’s ousting. A Defense Department official confirmed the accuracy of CBS News’ report.

Hegseth’s move comes a day after President Donald Trump’s address to the nation on the Iran war. In the speech, Trump signaled the US will intensify strikes on Iran, after earlier suggesting the US could be done with the war within two to three weeks.

As the Army Chief, George has worked closely with Army Secretary Dan Driscoll — a senior official close to the White House whom Hegseth has perceived as a threat and had a contentious relationship with at times. Hegseth has ousted a number of other senior military officers during his tenure.

George, a career infantry officer, commissioned out of the US Military Academy at West Point in 1988. He has served as the chief of staff since September 2023; he previously commanded I Corps at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, and went on to serve as the senior military assistant to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin during the Biden administration.

While the job of senior military assistant to the defense secretary is often one considered to be apolitical and a role given to the best of the best of military officers, George’s proximity to Austin has been considered a mark against him to Hegseth and his circle.

There was speculation among military and Pentagon officials when Hegseth nominated his senior military assistant, Gen. Chris LaNeve, to be the Army vice chief of staff, that he would ultimately take over for George. As the vice chief, LaNeve will likely step in as the acting chief of staff in George’s absence.

Before working for Hegseth, LaNeve — who has served since 1990 after commissioning from the University of Arizona ROTC — was the commanding general of 8th Army in South Korea, after a brief tenure as commander of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Commanding the 82nd Airborne Division is typically a two-year job, though LaNeve left the role less than two years in and moved to be a special assistant to the commander of US Army Forces Command, before moving to South Korea, according to his official biography.

LaNeve got Trump’s attention in the hours after his inauguration, when LaNeve called into the Commander in Chief’s Ball with his troops from South Korea.

“Sir, on behalf of the brave men and women who serve under my command and the thousands of dedicated service members that are part of the joint team in Korea, congratulations on your victory as the 47th President of the United States,” LaNeve said on a video call. “Welcome back, Mr. President.”

Trump praised LaNeve, saying, “Is this man central casting or what?”

“They’re not going to play games with you. That’s good,” Trump added, according to an official transcript of the event. “I like to see that. Nobody is playing games with that man.”

Iran’s biggest bridge near Tehran has crashed down in a stunning scene captured on camera following reports of U.S. airstrikes, President Donald Trump announced Thursday, as he pressed the regime to make a deal before tensions escalate further.

The B1 highway bridge, a key link between Iran’s capital and the western city of Karaj, is considered the tallest in the Middle East and was only inaugurated earlier this year.

Iranian state TV reportedly warned of potential retaliation, claiming the state’s military has identified multiple bridges in American-allied Middle East nations as targets, according to Iran International.

Trump posted a video on social media capturing a massive plume of smoke and debris after the bridge’s apparent collapse.

“The biggest bridge in Iran comes tumbling down, never to be used again — Much more to follow! IT IS TIME FOR IRAN TO MAKE A DEAL BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE, AND THERE IS NOTHING LEFT OF WHAT STILL COULD BECOME A GREAT COUNTRY!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

The strike on the bridge was aimed at cutting drone and missile supply lines to Iranian firing units targeting U.S. and Israeli forces, Middle East outlet i24NEWS reported, citing sources.

Iranian state TV also said the bridge was hit twice, roughly an hour apart, resulting in civilian casualties, Fars News reported.

Trump sends mixed messages on securing the Strait of Hormuz

Washington — President Trump has sent conflicting messages about the Strait of Hormuz over the last few weeks as the world’s oil supply has been choked by the Iran war.

In a prime-time address Wednesday, Mr. Trump declared that Iran “has been essentially decimated” and “when the conflict is over, the strait will open up naturally.”

“The hard part is done,” Mr. Trump said. But at the same time, he was telling other countries to step up and “take care” of the strait. “They must cherish it. They must grab it and cherish it. They can do it easily.”

The comments follow weeks of shifting plans from the president on how to secure the waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula through which about a fifth of the world’s oil flows.

CBS News national security analyst Aaron MacLean said Thursday that Iran has “played the major card that was available to them” by closing the Strait of Hormuz, which at “some point is going to have to be dealt with.” The international oil price benchmark, Brent Crude, jumped more than 7% after Mr. Trump’s speech.

In a March 9 interview with CBS News, the president claimed ships had been entering the strait and he was “thinking about taking it over.” But data show that a majority of vessels that have passed through the strait in the last month are linked to Iran as conditions remain perilous.

That same day, Mr. Trump told reporters that the U.S. Navy and its partners would escort oil tankers through the strait “if needed.” He added that the U.S. would offer “political risk insurance to any tankers operating in the Gulf.”

Mr. Trump said in mid-March that the U.S. would work with other countries to “police” the strait, though he would not disclose which countries had made such an agreement, and that the U.S. was “hammering” Iran’s capacity to threaten commercial ships.

“We hit, to the best of our knowledge, all of their mine-laying ships,” the president said on March 16. “Now they can put them on other types of ships, I guess, and drop them in. But we don’t know that any have even been dropped in.”

He encouraged other countries to “come and help us with the strait,” while also saying “we have it in very good shape.” Asked why the U.S. couldn’t immediately reopen the strait, Mr. Trump said, “it takes two to tango.”

On March 20, Mr. Trump asserted that reopening the strait was a “very simple” military maneuver, while also claiming “at a certain point, it’ll open itself.” A week later, the president claimed Iran was “begging to make a deal” and “if they make the right deal, then the strait will open up.” He also said the U.S. “blew up every one” of their mine droppers.

“They’re going to have to take them out on a rowboat or something,” he said of the mines.

At the same time, Mr. Trump has acknowledged that ships passing through the strait still face threats.

“Look, problem with the strait, guy can take a mine, drop it in the water and say, ‘Oh, it’s unsafe.’ It’s not like you’re taking out an army or you’re taking out a country, or you — they can drop it. Or you can take a machine gun from the shore and shoot a few bullets at a ship, or maybe an over-the-shoulder missile, small missiles,” Mr. Trump added on March 31. “That’s not for us. … That’ll be for whoever’s using the strait.”

Ahead of his prime-time address, Mr. Trump reiterated his call for other countries, like China, South Korea, Japan, France and other European countries to defend the strait.

“Let them all do it,” he said. “What the hell are we doing it for? All I want to do is make sure they don’t ever have a nuclear weapon. And the other thing, this was not part of what I wanted to do, but we’ve done it, I guess, through sheer force of personality, we have a regime change like nobody thought was possible.”

Mr. Trump again Wednesday night suggested securing the strait was not the responsibility of the United States.

“We will be helpful, but they should take the lead in protecting the oil that they so desperately depend on,” he said.

MacLean said the president’s Wednesday night comments on the strait imply that his “principle objective remains a deal — a deal at which point the Iranians will open it up or perhaps some form of regime change where they no longer harass it.”

“I think he’s aware of the difficulty of a military campaign to open the strait,” he said, adding that it runs the risk of prolonging the war — beyond the two to three weeks the president has said Wednesday it will last. At the outset of the war, the president said the U.S. military operations would take four to five weeks, and the offensive is currently in its fifth week.
