    2026-08-31T16:53:53.715Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/31/politics/george-santos-kalshi-ban

George Santos becomes first person to get lifetime ban from Kalshi

    2026-08-31T16:53:53.715Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/31/politics/george-santos-kalshi-ban

The prediction market Kalshi on Monday fined the Republican nominee in a competitive House race and imposed its first-ever lifetime ban, against former Rep. George Santos, after insider trading investigations.

The North Carolina candidate, Laurie Buckhout, admitted in a statement to CNN that she bet on her own campaign and said she made a “dumb mistake.”

This is the highest-profile example to date of political insider trading, where candidates or staffers trade on markets where they possess inside information or can influence the outcome. Experts have warned the practice is a growing danger as prediction platforms have exploded in popularity this year.

“I bet on myself. Literally,” Buckhout said. “It was a dumb mistake, and as soon as I learned there was an issue, I worked to make it right. Safe to say my career as a Kalshi trader was short-lived.”

Kalshi noted in a legal filing on Monday that she traded less than $1,000, cooperated with their internal investigation, and will get a three-year suspension.

The lifetime ban against Santos, meanwhile, stems from insider bets he placed about his potential appearance at the State of the Union earlier this year. Santos infamously was expelled from Congress in 2023 and went to prison in an unrelated fraud case but was released early thanks to a Trump commutation last year.

Prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket – where people can wager on sports, elections, entertainment and more – now see billions of dollars in weekly trading volume. The companies and federal regulators have pledged to crack down on insider trading and market manipulation.

Earlier this year, Kalshi suspended three minor political candidates, hailing from both parties, for similar conduct.

CNN has a partnership with Kalshi and uses its data to cover major events. CNN’s editorial employees aren’t permitted to trade on prediction markets.

The Buckhout case is the first publicly known instance of a nominee running for Congress caught betting on their own campaign. And it came in a critical district.

President Donald Trump has endorsed Buckhout, a retired Army colonel, and she was one of the first candidates named to the National Republican Congressional Committee’s “MAGA Majority” program for the midterms. The program promotes the party’s most promising recruits to flip Democratic-held seats.

North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District is one of the most competitive House districts in the midterms. It covers a mostly rural region of eastern North Carolina and has been represented by Democratic Rep. Don Davis since 2023.

Republican state lawmakers redrew the district last year as part of Trump’s nationwide push for GOP-friendly redistricting ahead of the midterms. It is now classified as “Lean Republican” by the Cook Political Report, making it one of Republicans’ best shots at netting a seat.

Buckhout ran against Davis in 2024 and lost by fewer than 2 percentage points before the district was redrawn. She briefly worked for the Department of Defense last year before launching her latest campaign.

Democrats seized on the Kalshi announcement to attack Buckhout.

In a social media post, Davis said Buckhout’s actions were “a disqualifying breach of public trust” and chided her for using the campaign as “an opportunity to cash in.”

Madison Andrus, a spokeswoman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said in a statement “there is no chance she can be trusted as an ethical representative for North Carolina families.”

The Santos case is the first lifetime ban on the Kalshi platform, a spokesperson confirmed.

“Hey @Kalshi thanks for the lifetime ban from your gambling platform. Let’s see how much longer you guys are around for,” Santos posted Monday on X, referring to the ongoing legal battle over whether prediction companies like Kalshi should be regulated by the states as gambling or continue to be regulated by the federal government as financial markets.

Federal regulators that oversee prediction markets also investigated Santos for his conduct. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission announced a settlement in July, imposing a $17,500 fine against Santos and closing the government’s probe.

Kalshi’s head of enforcement, Bobby DeNault, said Monday that the company was taking action against Buckhout, Santos, and a few other traders who broke the site’s rules.

“All but one individual (George Santos) cooperated with our Compliance Department inquiries and will be banned temporarily,” DeNault said.

CNN has reached out to Santos for comment.

He previously denied wrongdoing and called the allegations “preposterous.” After public reports about his questionable trades, he attacked Kalshi on social media, calling it “a predatory app.”

FTC and 22 states sue Amazon over alleged secret ad surcharge scheme

    August 31, 2026 / 4:00 PM EDT / CBS News

The Federal Trade Commission and 22 states on Monday sued Amazon over allegations that the e-commerce giant secretly inflated prices in its online search advertising auctions, potentially costing customers tens of billions of dollars.

The lawsuit alleges that the undisclosed surcharges were applied for seven years, increasing the prices that more than 1 million Amazon brands and sellers were required to pay to advertise on its platform.

The FTC’s lawsuit was joined by the attorneys general of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont and Washington.

The lawsuit centers on so-called second-price auctions, the industry standard for digital ad deals. Amazon informed businesses that they would pay only “one cent more” than the second-place bidder for an advertising keyword, but the lawsuit alleges that the retailer charged the winners their own price about 80% of the time.

That raised costs for businesses, alleged the FTC and states joining the suit.

“When one of the world’s largest online retailers engages in unfair and deceptive conduct, the impact can be staggering,” FTC Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson said in a statement. “Amazon has millions of advertising customers who were misled into paying significantly higher prices. These higher costs were largely passed on to American consumers.”

Amazon called the lawsuit “misguided,” and said that the average winning bids for sponsored product ads dropped 50% from 2019 to 2025.

“The FTC’s claim fundamentally misunderstands how advertisers operate,” the company said in a statement. “Advertisers adjust bids based on real-world performance, not descriptions of auction mechanics.”

Amazon added, “Even accepting the FTC’s flawed premise that advertisers do not adjust bids, we estimate they saved over $8 billion from 2021 to 2025 as a result of Amazon prioritizing ad relevancy over selecting ads on bid price alone.”

    Internal documents

Internal Amazon documents suggest the retailer was aware that advertisers were bidding based on their belief they were taking part in a true second-price auction, but that employees allegedly discussed raising prices while “hoping that advertisers don’t notice and decrease bids or ad spend,” according to an Amazon executive cited in the FTC’s complaint.

Amazon allegedly tested how much it could increase hidden charges without being detected by advertisers, according to North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson.

“Amazon takes great pains to actively conceal from customers the fact that it inflates its purported auction prices,” the lawsuit alleged. “As Amazon’s confidence that its advertising customers are unaware of its conduct has grown, it has substantially increased its hidden surcharges.”

New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement that the FTC and states are seeking a court order to bar Amazon from pursuing the “illegal scheme” and to require the company to pay penalties, restitution and other damages.

Will Trump’s Venezuela oil deal lower U.S. gas prices? Here’s what experts say.

    August 31, 2026 1:57 PM EDT / CBS News

By President Trump on Friday said a U.S. deal with Venezuela to tap its oil reserves “will substantially lower Gas Prices for all Americans, long into the future.” With the average U.S. gas price still above $4 a gallon nationwide, American consumers may be wondering if help is on the way.

Don’t hold your breath, energy experts said.

The agreement with the U.S. involves the development of 17 strategic oil fields in Venezuela that hold proven reserves of 65 billion barrels of oil, Venezuelan state media reported on Saturday. Although tapping the crude could eventually lead to more oil flowing to the U.S., new fields can take 15 years after discovery to begin producing oil, according to Global Energy Monitor, a nonprofit that tracks energy infrastructure.

That timeline may even be on the optimistic side, the group added, citing geopolitical risk and the nature of Venezuela’s oil. The country’s so-called heavy crude is harder to refine into gas than the light crude U.S. refiners typically process.

Even more bullish forecasts are measured in years. Tracy Shuchart, CEO of commodity analytics firm Hilltower Resource Advisors, said in a social media post that it could take five to 15 years before enough Venezuelan oil flows to the U.S. to affect domestic gas prices.

The announcement is “a signal that the White House remains concerned about elevated fuel prices — though in reality, any benefits from increased Venezuelan output will take years to fully materialize and are unlikely to move the needle in the near term,” GasBuddy petroleum analyst Patrick De Haan said in a Monday research note.

Meanwhile, the U.S.-Venezuela oil venture faces potential legal and operational obstacles, making it unlikely to boost oil production in the near term, analysts with investment bank UBS said in an Aug. 31 report.

    Boosting production will take time

Venezuela has the world’s largest proven oil reserves, at just over 300 billion barrels, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. By comparison, the U.S. has less than 50 billion barrels.

Venezuela’s oil industry has suffered from years of underinvestment, with experts estimating that at least $100 billion is needed to restore its oil fields to full capacity. The country has boosted its oil production this year to about 1.1 million barrels a day in the second quarter, up from 941,000 barrels a day in 2025, according to the latest OPEC data.

“The performance of Venezuela’s oil sector so far this year underscores that expanding production is no easy feat,” UBS said. “Roughly eight months after former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro’s removal from office, Venezuelan petroleum output is up by just 100-200 thousand barrels per day from a very low base.”

The U.S.-Venezuela deal is structured as a private joint venture, with Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez saying the country granted a 100-year concession to operate in the 17 oil fields. The U.S. government will control 55% of the joint venture, split between equity and the ability to obtain oil from it at cost, a U.S. official told CBS News.

The project is expected to attract nearly $100 billion in private investment to Venezuela and support thousands of jobs, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on social media on Friday.

The deal appears to pave the way for the private sector to invest in Venezuela’s industry, Bob McNally, a former energy adviser in George W. Bush’s White House, told The Associated Press.

Even after the U.S. intervention in Venezuela in January, Chevron remains the only American oil company actively producing oil in Venezuela. Other major oil companies exited the country years ago after former Venezuelan leader Hugo Chávez nationalized the country’s oil industry.

ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips later successfully sued for compensation for the confiscation of their assets.

That history may make oil companies hesitant to re-enter Venezuela, even under the current agreement, the UBS analysts said.

“From a U.S. oil company’s perspective, any significant investment in Venezuela would generally need to be accompanied by a legal framework that could survive a change in leadership in both the U.S. and Venezuela,” they wrote. “Companies such as ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips are still owed significant amounts under legal judgments related to assets previously expropriated in Venezuela.”

They added, “Ultimately, investments in Venezuela would have to compare favorably on a risk-adjusted basis with alternatives around the world.”

White House meeting with oil companies

Mr. Trump is scheduled to meet with U.S. energy refiners and distributors on Tuesday to discuss the Venezuelan deal, White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers told CBS News.

“President Trump is laser-focused on ensuring his successful energy dominance agenda translates into the most cost savings possible at the pump for consumers,” she said. “As part of that commitment, the President will meet with industry leaders to collaborate on the best ways to increase refining capacity, further unleash American energy dominance across the entire supply chain and bring down prices for the American people.”

For now, the Iran war is having a greater impact on gas prices than the agreement with Venezuela. Oil prices rose Sunday after the U.S. attacked Iranian rocket launchers in the Strait of Hormuz. The price for a barrel of West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. benchmark, rose $2.42, or 2.9%, to $85.78 a barrel on Monday.

The U.S.-Venezuela deal could be “helpful in the long run, but it’s not going to do anything to change the price of gasoline at the retail station for Labor Day weekend,” Amy Myers Jaffe, director of the Energy, Climate Justice and Sustainability Lab at New York University, told AP.

An 80-year-old senator is asking for six more years — and pitching himself as revolutionary

    2026-08-31T16:00:29.379Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/31/politics/massachusetts-democratic-senate-primary-markey-moulton

    Arlington, Massachusetts—

The Boston Tea Party wasn’t really about the tea, and it certainly wasn’t about the Mohawks though those were the costumes the colonists wore as they dumped the boxes overboard.

In Tuesday’s Democratic Senate primary in deep blue Massachusetts, longtime Sen. Ed Markey is harking back to those revolutionary roots as he pitches himself to voters as the anti-establishment candidate against Rep. Seth Moulton – despite arriving to Washington just three years after Joe Biden did in 1973.

Although the language of the left-wing insurgency surrounds the race, under the surface, the contest for many appears to be less about ideological issues or governing philosophies than a smash-up of ambition, efforts to secure Democratic power in the state in the future, and personal pique.

Markey, 80, in one corner, is vowing to keep fighting for left-wing ideals, which include some successes and some that he hasn’t passed in all his years in power so far. In the other, Moulton, the 47-year-old decorated Marine and six-term congressman who has frustrated Nancy Pelosi and many other Democrats by repeatedly challenging their leadership, has staked his campaign on generational change.

While the race has been cast as the last big existential Democratic primary of the midterms cycle, voters across Markey and Moulton events told CNN they struggle to make sense of where they fit into the great intraparty debate this contest has been made out to be, and even what the word “progressive” means anymore.

“I think for me it’s just like you’re committed to helping the working class, committed to lifting up underrepresented groups. I don’t have one issue that if you’re not committed to that, you’re not progressive,” said Northeastern law student Collin Rue, who stood with other university students as the backdrop for Markey’s Saturday rally at an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union hall in Dorchester. The event was headlined by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and senior Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

“I love being progressive,” said linguist Lisa Lavoie, who came to a Moulton-funded party on the Lynn, Massachusetts, common on Saturday afternoon, noting that the question reminded her of some of her struggles teaching English as a second language. “People who use the words get to define what they mean, just like Starbucks with their ‘Grande’ and ‘Venti’… I see it as moving past the established systems so that everyone has a reasonable chance.”

Backstage at the Markey rally where she was one of the marquee speakers, Warren — who in 2012 won her seat as the outsider progressive hero — told CNN her current definition: “Progressives are people who believe that government should play a role in expanding opportunity for everyone, not just helping funnel more resources to those at the top.”

Markey’s definition of progressivism to CNN was a list of ideas that he’s been pushing but so far hasn’t passed: “Medicare for All, Green New Deal, Trans Bill of Rights, taxing billionaires, cutting, slashing the defense budget, transferring the funding over to healthcare, education, environmental justice.”

Moulton’s answer: “In my view, it means actually making progress, and I think that’s a big difference, because there’s no question that Senator Markey is good at the press release, good at a perfectly worded statement that’s not going to offend everybody, but he hasn’t done much.”

The primary is dicey for Massachusetts’ Democratic leaders. Markey doesn’t inspire broad passion, and many assumed his 2020 victory — when then-Rep. Joe Kennedy III tried to take him out in the primary — would be his swan song, a career ending on his terms. Progressive stalwart Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York helped galvanize Markey’s campaign that year after he stood with her to introduce the Green New Deal.

In private conversations, state leaders say they’re stuck between feeling like the senator is going through the motions and a personal dislike for Moulton.

The potential of a Markey win is also being weighed through the prism of the possibility of both Senate seats and the governor’s office being open in the next few years. Warren will be 81 when her current term expires in 2031 and state Democrats suspect Gov. Maura Healey will want a job in a future presidential administration.

Eager younger Massachusetts Democrats aren’t too eager to rock a boat they may want to sail on themselves, and they’re not happy that Moulton, like Kennedy six years ago, is trying to jump the line.

Healey, like many of the state’s other better-known Democrats, stayed neutral. Asked on Sunday morning at a campaign event boosting the state Senate president pro tempore – who’s facing his own primary challenge – whether she’s landed on a decision in her own head, she hesitated slightly before saying she thinks so.

“What’s important to Massachusetts is that we have leadership in the federal delegation that’s going to get real results for people and that will be a partner with me as governor in doing the things that I want to see happen here,” Healey said. “People are so frustrated that DC seems so broken. It’s like, go get stuff done.”

As for Kennedy, he told CNN that while the experience that comes with incumbency can have benefits, there are times when it “calcifies power.” Democrats “would do well to examine the structures that perpetuate a status quo,” he said.

As of Sunday afternoon, he said he had not made up his mind who to vote for on Tuesday.

At the Saturday rally, Markey talked about getting another six years in Washington as part of a Massachusetts tradition of revolution going back to 1775, but also spoke of the local roots of the abolitionist, suffragette, gay rights and healthcare movements.

“We are the revolutionaries. Thank you, revolutionaries, for joining us today,” he told the cheering crowd, and finished his speech by doing an extended bop to Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

Markey, wearing a 1775 cap, spoke to a smaller gathering in Arlington the next afternoon about picking up the spirit of Paul Revere as he rode through the town warning of a king. Sitting at a picnic table in a park afterwards, Markey again invoked Revere’s famous ride as he claimed that his repeated primary challengers reflect “the genetic make-up” of the state.

He brushed off mentions of his age as fair game but ultimately insignificant. Markey likewise dismissed the Boston Globe’s complaint in its endorsement of Moulton that he hasn’t delivered on the promises made in the Kennedy race, arguing that the critique was not reflective of all the legislation he’s put together and signed onto.

“From my perspective, it’s not your age, it is the age of your ideas, and I’ve always been the youngest guy in the world when it comes to ideas. So, I look ahead, I lead the way, and I challenge the establishment, not only from the Republican Party, but from the Democratic Party as well,” Markey said.

Ocasio-Cortez endorsed him much later this cycle than in 2020, and without the verve or presence by his side this time around. An aide did not answer CNN when asked how to read the congresswoman’s decision not to join the rally with Sanders on Saturday.

Still, Markey’s campaign has been trying to drum up energy on the left, whether through pulling in Sanders at the end, the email blast to college Democratic groups offering students free seats behind the political icon as he spoke, or leaning into collaborations with influencers. Campaign shirts are bright pink, with the word “AGONIZE” crossed out on the back and “ORGANIZE” written under. Signs are printed in what one staffer handing them out called “Rainbow Ed” or “Ed, White and Blue.” As he advocates for the Green New Deal, Markey has a line about cutting tax breaks for oil companies —“Give us some of that socialism!” — that he knows to work into his speeches for reliable cheers from his crowds.

He ripped repeatedly into Moulton, sneering, “after being in the House of Representatives for 12 years and accomplishing very little, that all of a sudden he’ll be superstar if he goes to the Senate. I just don’t think the evidence is there in order to, in any way, defend that erroneous premise.”

Markey has promised this will be his last term and says he has no concerns about his ability to do it capably.

After spending the year backing an extensive list of challengers to incumbents, in this race, Sanders on Saturday summoned the familiar finger pointing and reddening of the race for Markey, a man who over a decade ago was described along with his wife in a Washington Post write-up of his first Senate swearing in party as “regulars on the charity gala/cocktail party circuit for more than two decades.”

“Ed understands what Republicans don’t and too many Democrats don’t: That status quo politics and status quo policies are not working for working families,” Sanders said.

Moulton, Democratic leaders in Washington and Massachusetts tend to say privately, hasn’t done himself any favors with an approach some find standoffish and self-righteous. So, though he’s racked up some legislative wins, like helping create the national 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, Moulton knew that if he waited for an open seat, he’d never be the one party leaders turned to.

That’s also meant he, unlike Kennedy, came into the race more comfortable with knowing he was going to get some hate.

Looking out from a gazebo on the greenway in the Boston suburb of Lynn at a bouncy house and free ice cream truck meant to encourage voters to stop by, Moulton on Saturday afternoon ticked through the problems identified in a Boston Globe survey that showed one in four Massachusetts residents saying they considered leaving the state.

“When I say Seth, you say service!” a campaign worker shouted, trying to get a call-and-response going.

Sitting on a bench in the shade as the crowd dissipated afterwards, Moulton said the efforts to paint him as a moderate or corporate shill are hypocritical and disingenuous.

He said there’s been “a level of lying that I did not expect.” He tagged the Markey campaign with a “culture of negativity,” recounting how many staffers and volunteers he says refused to shake his hand when he went over to greet them before their debates. He rolled his eyes at hearing Markey compare his reelection campaign to a new revolution. He got exasperated to hear how much Markey and allies have attacked him over saying in 2024 that he wasn’t in favor of trans kids playing girls’ sports – a stance he’s somewhat backtracked on.

“He decries Trump for weaponizing these people for political purposes,” Moulton said. “What is he doing?”

Moulton’s case against Markey is straightforward: “I respect your work, and I’ve supported much of it myself. But you’ve got to admit it hasn’t been enough. How can you say you’re proud of your energy policy when our electric bills are twice the national average? How can say that you’re proud of your work on affordable housing when people can’t afford to live here?”

As Moulton made his case, his five-year-old daughter came by to show him how she’d been turned into a kitty cat by the face painter at the fair.

The perspective of being a father, he said, helped push him into the argument he’s been making on the trail.

“My horizon used to be maybe 50 years out. Now it’s like 100 years,” Moulton said.

In the context of this race, that’s more than just a general feeling, Moulton explained, bringing up his other daughter and connecting it to a moment in an August debate when Markey seemed to struggle when asked about using artificial intelligence.

“Six years from now, my 7-year-old will be 13, getting on social media probably within the next few years when we know it hurts kids because the guy who’s now 86 doesn’t even understand AI and gave free rein to big tech to deregulate social media,” Moulton said. “There’s a lot of selfish reasons people want an ineffective Senate.”

While not claiming to represent a revolution, Moulton said his win would have a more immediate ripple effect in the general election.

“It’s going to be hard for independent voters in Ohio or Texas to vote for a Democrat if they think he or she represents a party of 80-year-olds,” Moulton argued. “You might love James Talarico, but there’s a big difference between saying he’s going to go to Washington and be a part of a group like Ed Markey versus a next generation leader.”

Whatever happens, this may be the last time Massachusetts does a race like this: one of the questions on the ballot in November would eliminate primaries in favor of a non-partisan, top-two system like that of California.

    CBS News

    CBS News

A tropical storm warning was issued Monday for coastal stretches of Louisiana and Texas as a tropical depression formed in the Gulf. Forecasters originally classified it as a potential tropical cyclone but revised the designation as it became more organized.

If it continues to develop as anticipated, the system will become Tropical Storm Edouard, the fifth tropical storm so far during the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.

Maps show storm’s path and forecast

Forecasters predict that the system will dump 3 to 6 inches of rain on parts of coastal Texas and some inland areas in east-central parts of the state, with up to 9 inches of rainfall possible in certain places. Southwestern Louisiana was expected to see 2 to 3 inches, the National Hurricane Center said.

    CBS News

It warned that rain in both states “could produce flash flooding, especially in low-lying and urban areas.” Up to 3 feet of possible storm surge in coastal spots was also a concern.

The current warning area includes portions of southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana, beginning at Texas’ Port Bolivar and continuing to Louisiana’s Vermilion/Cameron Parish Line, according to the hurricane center, which is based in Miami.

    CBS News

Communities are placed under tropical storm warnings when conditions, including strong winds, rain and flooding, are expected to take shape within the warning area. In this case, tropical storm conditions are likely within 24 to 36 hours, the hurricane center said, with the latest forecast track indicating it could reach the Gulf Coast by Tuesday.

The storm was traveling slowly westward toward the Gulf Coast on Monday, when forecasters pinpointed its location about 130 miles from Morgan City, Louisiana, and 230 miles from Port Arthur, Texas.

It had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph — just below the minimum speed of 39 mph that would officially qualify it as a tropical storm. Forecasters said it was expected to strengthen somewhat over the course of the next day or so.

FIRST ON FOX: The Small Business Administration is bringing a celebrity panel to Washington next month to judge five entrepreneurs competing for a share of a $1 million prize pool, Fox News Digital has exclusively learned.

“As our nation marks its 250th anniversary, the SBA is celebrating America’s legacy of free enterprise through the Million Dollar Pitch Competition—a historic live event showcasing the essential contributions of America’s small businesses,” SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler told Fox News Digital.

Entrepreneurs from across the nation submitted their ideas earlier this year, leaving five finalists to participate in a live pitch competition in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 18.

Rapper Nicki Minaj, entrepreneur and private equity fund manager Grant Cardone, co-founder of Airbnb and U.S. Chief Design Office Joe Gebbia will judge the final competition. Award-winning actor Dean Cain will host the event, Fox News Digital has exclusively learned.

The competition is another example of the Trump administration’s efforts to spotlight American ingenuity and partner with the private sector to support innovation and small-business growth, Fox News Digital learned.

“Their participation brings invaluable real-world perspective as our five exceptional finalists compete for a share of $1 million in growth capital. I look forward to joining them next month as we recognize the innovators and job creators who power American strength,” Loeffler added.

The participants were evaluated based on categories of strengthening American competitiveness, examples of small businesses “punching above its weight,” economic impact and quality jobs and business fundamentals and execution readiness.

A federal grand jury on Monday subpoenaed Daniel Richman, a longtime friend and adviser to James Comey, in a renewed probe into whether the former FBI Director improperly shared sensitive information with the media, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

The suspected leak — which involved memos Comey wrote about his meetings with President Donald Trump — had previously been examined during President Donald Trump’s first term, but prosecutors declined to bring charges.

The subpoena suggests the Justice Department has opened a new investigation into the matter, marking the department’s third attempt to target Comey, one of Trump’s most prominent political foes.

Comey is already facing charges that he threatened Trump with a social media post depicting shells that spelled out “8647.” The term 86 is sometimes used to refer to getting rid or removing something and Trump is the 47th president.

He was also facing charges for allegedly making false statements to Congress, but those charges were thrown out by a judge last year.

The subpoena of Richman was first reported by Fox News.

CNN has reached out to Richman for comment.

The controversy over the alleged leaks to the New York Times began in the early days of Trump’s first administration. After he was fired as FBI Director by Trump, Comey shared at least one memo describing his conversations with the president with a New York Times reporter.

Richman has said that while he did share the contents of one memo, “the substance of the memo passed on to the Times was not marked classified and to my knowledge remains unclassified.”

Judge orders National Guard shooting suspect to be force-fed amid monthslong hunger strike

    August 31, 2026 / 2:26 PM EDT / CBS News

A federal judge ordered the man accused of fatally shooting a National Guard member and severely injuring another in Washington, D.C., last year to be force-fed and receive medical treatment following a monthslong refusal to eat and sometimes drink water while in government custody.

In a court order dated Saturday, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta ordered Rahmanullah Lakanwal to be forcibly fed to “preserve” his life “or prevent a foreseeable deterioration in his condition that if not treated is likely to lead to death.”

Lakanwal, the judge ordered, is subject to the treatment “until adequate oral intake of food and liquid and adequate acceptance of medical treatment is achieved and defendant’s life is no longer threatened.”

In court filings last month, the Justice Department said Lakanwal was moved to a D.C. hospital on July 9 on an “emergency basis” to receive “medical treatment necessary to preserve his life” after he had refused to eat starting in June as he awaits trial.

Mehta’s order will remain in effect until Oct. 28.

Lakanwal — an Afghan national who received humanitarian parole to enter the U.S. in 2021 — is accused of killing Army SPC Sarah Beckstrom and critically wounding Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe in an ambush-style shooting several blocks from the White House last November. He was also charged with attempting to kill two other unnamed service members who subdued him at the scene of the attack.

Beckstrom and Wolfe were members of the West Virginia National Guard who were deployed to the streets of D.C. last year as part of an anti-crime operation.

It’s unclear why Lakanwal is refusing food and medical care. His attorneys did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Lakanwal is facing more than a dozen federal charges for the attack, including murder of a person assisting an officer of the United States and discharge of a firearm during a violent crime that causes death, both of which are death penalty-eligible. He also is facing attempted murder and firearm charges, along with first-degree murder, assault and gun possession charges under D.C. law. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The Justice Department has said it is reviewing whether to seek the death penalty in Lakanwal’s case.
