Wisconsin official cries foul alleging FBI showed up at front door of county election director’s home

    May 14, 2026 1:52pm EDT / Fox News

The FBI has been active across the country investigating election integrity issues since Trump took office in January 2025

By Andrew Mark Miller Fox News

A county clerk in Wisconsin claims that a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent attempted to interview a county election director at her residence and released a statement defending the state’s handling of the 2020 presidential election.

“I can confirm that a representative of the Federal Bureau of Investigation visited the home of my Elections Director and left her business card,” Milwaukee County Clerk George Christenson said in a statement on Thursday morning.

“We will be following up to determine the nature of this visit. It is unfortunate that the FBI chose to visit the private residence of Milwaukee County’s Elections Director rather than contact the Election Commission’s office directly. No dedicated public servant should be subjected to that type of intrusion simply for carrying out her responsibilities with integrity and professionalism.”

Christenson went on to defend the state’s handling of the 2020 presidential election as “fair and transparent” and said “this has been proven repeatedly over the last six years by the post-election canvass, the Presidential Election Recount, State court-based challenge, Federal court-based challenge, the forensic audit by the Wisconsin’s Legislative Audit Bureau, and two additional independent audits. Continuing to relitigate settled questions does not strengthen public confidence in elections but it undermines it.”

“While we cooperate with all legitimate law enforcement actions, we will defend against any attack on our democracy and will defend the rights of voters of Milwaukee County,” Christenson wrote. “Our responsibility as election officials is to safeguard the integrity of the process through facts, transparency, and adherence to the law, and the record clearly demonstrates that those standards were met in 2020.”

Christenson went on to suggest the FBI’s actions are an “attack on democracy.”

In January, the FBI searched the Fulton County, Georgia, main election facility in Union City, near Atlanta, and focused on records connected to the 2020 general election after obtaining a court-approved search warrant, Fox Atlanta reported.

An underlying affidavit revealed the bureau was probing allegations of ballot irregularities and record-keeping failures in Georgia, a state President Donald Trump lost by a razor-thin margin to President Joe Biden that became ground zero for Trump’s election fraud claims in the aftermath of 2020.

In March, the FBI subpoenaed 2020 voting documents in Arizona. Multiple U.S. officials confirmed the election probe to Fox News, saying the DOJ is looking at a large tranche of Arizona data from 2020 and 2024.

U.S. Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks, formerly Texas’ border czar until his appointment by the second Trump administration last year, is stepping down from his position, three Department of Homeland Security sources told CBS News on Thursday.

He informed staff on Thursday of his retirement from Border Patrol, the federal agency that oversees the green-uniformed agents in charge of intercepting the illicit movement of people and drugs into the U.S., including along the border with Mexico.

Banks is the latest top Trump administration immigration official to leave in recent months. In March, Kristi Noem was replaced by then-Oklahoma Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin as homeland security secretary. Her ouster came amid growing backlash to her response to the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens by federal agents in Minneapolis, as well as her role in controversial television advertisements.

Outspoken Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino also retired in March, after being sidelined following the controversy around the Minneapolis crackdown. Meanwhile, Todd Lyons, the acting head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is set to step down at the end of May, and will be replaced on an interim basis by a longtime agency official.

Banks told Border Patrol employees in a farewell message on Thursday that “it is time for me to retire and return home to Texas to focus on my family and ranch.”

“What we have accomplished together in the last year and a half is nothing short of amazing,” Banks wrote. “You, the men and women of the Border Patrol, took the United States Border from the most chaotic and unsecured border in the history of this great Nation and have delivered the most secure border this country has ever seen.”

Rodney Scott, the commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, which oversees Border Patrol, congratulated Banks on his retirement.

“We thank U.S. Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks for his decades of service to this country and congratulate him on his second retirement after returning to serve during one of the most challenging periods for border security. During his time as Chief, the border was transformed from chaos to the most secure border ever recorded,” Scott said in a statement. “We wish him and his family well.”

Banks was tapped to lead Border Patrol in January 2025, when President Trump returned to the White House, pledging to launch a nationwide deportation blitz and seal the U.S. southern border after years of record illegal crossings under the Biden administration.

The appointment was unprecedented, since the Border Patrol chief position had long been filled by career agency officials. Banks took the helm of the agency as a political appointee of the second Trump administration, after serving as Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s border czar. He had previously served in mid-level roles at Border Patrol.

Banks noted in his farewell message that he served in the U.S. Navy for a decade.

During Banks’ tenure as chief, Border Patrol was tasked with playing a bigger role in immigration enforcement far away from U.S. borders.

Border Patrol teams led by Bovino carried out sweeping and often indiscriminate immigration roundups and stops in major cities like Los Angeles, Chicago and Minneapolis. Those “roving” patrols were largely discontinued after the fallout from the Minneapolis operation.

“Several times the Chinese tried to stop US reporters and staff from leaving their positions and joining the motorcade,” the Telegraph correspondent said on X.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Secret Service for comment on Thursday.

This is not the first time tensions have flared between the Secret Service and Chinese security officials.

During Trump’s 2017 visit, commotion was caused over the nuclear football, a briefcase that holds the tools for the president to order a nuclear strike, Axios first reported at the time.

SECRET SERVICE MUST ‘COURSE CORRECT’ AFTER ALLEGED SMUGGLING EPISODE ON TRUMP TRIP, FORMER AGENT SAYS

Reports at the time said that when the U.S. military aide carrying the briefcase entered the Great Hall, Chinese security officials blocked his entry. The then-White House Chief of Staff John Kelly was notified and rushed over to escort the aide.

“We’re moving in,” Kelly said, according to Axios. A Chinese security official then grabbed Kelly, before a U.S. Secret Service agent grabbed that Chinese security official, and allegedly tackled him to the ground.

The U.S. Secret Service later denied the reports of “tackling” issuing a statement on X.

WASHINGTON, May 14 (Reuters) – There are no confirmed cases in the United States of the Andes hantavirus outbreak that killed three people aboard a luxury cruise ship this month, U.S. health officials said on Thursday, but 41 people, including 18 quarantined in Nebraska and Atlanta, are being monitored for possible infection.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the 41 people include passengers who had returned to the United States before the outbreak was identified and others who may have been exposed on flights where a symptomatic case was present.

Most of the people being monitored should stay at home and avoid contact with others during the six-week monitoring period, said Dr. David Fitter, the incident manager for the CDC’s hantavirus response.

He did not give an update on the 18 people in quarantine. The University of Nebraska Medical ‌Center said on Tuesday that one passenger initially placed in a biocontainment unit had been medically cleared to move to a quarantine unit with the others.

“What I can say is that there are no cases in the United States,” Fitter said on a press call when asked how many people had been tested in the United States.

Senators vote to block their pay during future government shutdowns

The Senate on Thursday moved to bar senators from being paid during government shutdowns.

Pushed by Louisiana Republican Sen. John Kennedy, the measure took on renewed significance in the wake of two history-making shutdowns in recent months: A 43-day federal government shutdown in 2025 and a record-breaking 76-day shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security earlier this year.

The measure does not need approval from the House nor the president and is binding for senators beginning in November after the midterm elections.

Senators approved the resolution by voice vote, despite some questions as to whether it was constitutional. The Constitution only states that lawmakers are to be paid from the Treasury, with no exceptions mentioned.

But Kennedy has maintained the resolution is not unconstitutional and didn’t expect any challenges from his colleagues on those grounds.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was bullish on the measure’s prospects ahead of the vote. “Yes, I’m going to vote for it, and I think it has a lot of support,” the New York Democrat said Wednesday.

Speaker Mike Johnson has not indicated whether the House will adopt a similar measure applied to its own members’ salaries in the future.

“We’ll have to find out,” he previously told reporters. “I mean, the House has some ideas on that as well, so we’ll see what consensus we can build on.”

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/bf702439-f9ad-401c-aa37-0c9d612063c6

Bipartisan U.S.-Mexico congressional caucus launches amid diplomatic strain

    May 14, 2026 / 1:42 PM EDT / CBS News

A bipartisan group of House lawmakers will launch a new U.S.-Mexico caucus on Thursday, aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries on trade, security and culture at a moment of mounting tension in the bilateral relationship.

Rep. Joaquin Castro, Democrat of Texas and ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, and Rep. Rudy Yakym, Republican of Indiana, will serve as co-chairs of the caucus. The launch is being backed by the American Mexican Leadership Council, or AMLC, a new national organization also debuting Thursday to elevate Mexican American leadership and advance U.S.-Mexico collaboration.

The rollout comes at a turbulent moment in the bilateral relationship. The State Department last week initiated a review of all 53 Mexican consulates operating in the U.S., the move could lead Secretary of State Marco Rubio to consider closing some diplomatic offices, amid rising tensions over security cooperation and cartel violence following the deaths of two American CIA officers during a counter-narcotics operation in northern Mexico. The strain comes just weeks ahead of the first joint review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, scheduled for July 1, 2026.

“I am thrilled to announce the official launch of the U.S.-Mexico Caucus to strengthen the relationship between the United States and Mexico,” Castro said. “Our shared border, history and interests — particularly in trade, migration, and security — make the creation of this caucus relevant now more than ever.”

Yakym, whose Indiana district leans heavily on trade with Mexico, described the caucus’s focus on economic and security stakes back home.

“Hoosier manufacturers and farmers rely on Mexico for inputs and exports, while our communities count on a strong security relationship to keep fentanyl and other deadly drugs off the streets,” he said. “I look forward to this caucus serving as a forum to deepen that relationship.”

The caucus will consist of 10 inaugural members evenly split across the aisle, including Reps. Pete Aguilar, Democrat of California, María Salazar, Republican of Florida, Adriano Espaillat, Democrat of New York, and Juan Ciscomani, Republican of Arizona), Greg Stanton, Democrat of Arizona, Michael McCaul Republican of Texas, Veronica Escobar, Democrat of Texas, Rep. Henry Cuellar, Democrat of Texas, and Don Bacon, Republican of Nebraska.

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/bf702439-f9ad-401c-aa37-0c9d612063c6

“Mexico and the United States are connected not only by our southern border, but also by mutual security challenges and shared economic interests,” McCaul said, adding that he is “very proud to join this caucus.”

“Strengthening areas of collaboration — from agriculture to immigration to counter-narcotic efforts — will no doubt benefit both our nations and the broader region,” he said.

Outside the Capitol, the newly formed AMLC is positioning itself as a leadership organization supporting the caucus’s work. The group is co-chaired by former U.S. Ambassador to Croatia Nathalie Rayes and led by president and CEO Sergio Gonzales, with a bipartisan coalition that includes former U.S. Treasurer Rosario Marín, former Transportation and Energy Secretary Federico Peña, and former House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

“This is about creating opportunity, prosperity and economic security for communities across the United States,” Gonzales said. “So many of the sectors that drive our economy, from agriculture to finance, innovation, and trade depend on a successful relationship with Mexico. America’s strength and competitiveness in the world are deeply connected to the success of this partnership.”

Rayes framed the moment as one that demands politics step aside.

“The launch of this bipartisan caucus sends a strong message: the U.S.-Mexico relationship transcends politics,” she said. “It is about maintaining economic strength, striving towards shared security, and the millions of people whose lives are shaped by this partnership.”

Mexico maintains the largest foreign consular network in the United States, with offices that provide documentation and legal aid to millions of Mexican citizens living across the country. Most are concentrated in border states and cities with large Mexican American populations, including California, Texas and Arizona.

In recent years, U.S. consulate closures have usually reflected rising tensions with rival countries rather than routine diplomatic changes. In 2020, as relations between Washington and Beijing worsened, the Trump administration ordered China’s consulate in Houston to close, citing concerns over espionage and intellectual property theft. In 2017, the U.S. ordered Russia to close its consulate in San Francisco, along with diplomatic facilities in Washington and New York, in response to Moscow expelling American diplomats.

Asked recently about the State Department’s plan to review consulates, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters said “there would be no reason for it because the consulates are very respectful of U.S. politics.”
