WASHINGTON, Aug 31 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s approval rating was stuck at the lowest level of his political career amid broad dissatisfaction over the war in Iran and the Republican’s economic stewardship, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll that concluded on Monday.
Just 33% of Americans approve of the job Trump is doing in the White House – the third straight Reuters/Ipsos poll with that share of respondents giving the president a thumbs up.

Trump’s political brand looks increasingly like a potential weight on his Republican Party, which will be defending slim congressional majorities in the November 3 midterm elections.
Democrats appear more fired up about the elections, with 46% of self-identified Democrats describing themselves as “very enthusiastic” about voting in November, compared to 31% of Republicans, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll which surveyed 1,167 U.S. adults nationwide.
Asked which party they would vote for if the congressional elections were held today, 36% of independents in the survey picked Democrats and 22% said Republicans.

Since mid-August, Trump’s popularity has held at a level it only briefly touched early in his first presidency, and well below the 47% share of Americans who approved of his performance early in his current term. His rating is lower than the low point his predecessor in office, Democrat Joe Biden hit, at 35% approval, in October 2024.
Like Biden, Trump has been dogged by widespread discontent over high levels of inflation. Gasoline prices have surged since Trump ordered the U.S. to start bombing Iran in February, and just 36% of Americans approve of the war, the Reuters/Ipsos poll showed.
The conflict has had long lulls over the period, but in recent days the two sides have traded missile strikes and since the war’s outset Iran has largely blocked a major transit point for the global oil trade.

Some 71% of Americans – including four in 10 Republicans – disapprove of how Trump is handling the cost of living. For the last month, registered voters in the survey have been saying the Democratic Party has better ideas for the economy than the Republican Party, the first time Democrats have led on the issue in about a decade.
The four-day poll had a margin of error of 3 percentage points in either direction.

WASHINGTON, Aug 31 (Reuters) – The Trump administration will soon announce sharply lower vehicle fuel-economy standards, reversing a push by the prior administration to force automakers to build more fuel-efficient vehicles, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Monday.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in December proposed significantly reducing fuel economy requirements from model years 2022 to 2031, requiring a fleetwide average 34.5 miles per gallon by 2031, down from 50.4 miles per gallon (21.4 km per liter) under former President Joe Biden.

“We are about announce a common-sense fuel economy standard because we want Detroit to build cars that Americans want to buy — not cars that Democrats want Washington to build,” Duffy said at an appearance in Michigan.

Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed spent this past weekend trying to mend fences with Jewish Democrats in Michigan, but his Republican rival calls El-Sayed’s comments a “sham apology.”
El-Sayed, in an appearance Saturday before the Michigan Democrats’ Jewish Caucus, and in an answer to a question from Fox News Digital, apologized for comments he made after a March attack on a suburban Detroit synagogue. But he pushed back when asked to repudiate controversial comments from incendiary left-wing streamer Hasan Piker, who is a strong supporter of his campaign.
A vocal critic of Israel who describes its military actions against Hamas in Gaza as “genocide,” El-Sayed is facing off against former Rep. Mike Rogers, the Republican nominee in the Great Lakes battleground state, for a crucial open Senate seat the Democrats must hold in the midterm elections as they aim to win back control of the chamber.
El-Sayed’s narrow primary victory over more moderate Rep. Haley Stevens in what was a divisive intraparty showdown was arguably the biggest victory to date for the left in its battle against the establishment for the ideological future of the Democratic Party. El-Sayed appeared this past weekend at the state party’s nominating convention in Lansing, Michigan in an effort to unify Democrats in the wake of the primary battle.

Fox News Digital asked El-Sayed about a recent controversy stemming from comments he made in response to an attack on a Michigan synagogue, when federal investigators say a gunman inspired and radicalized by Hezbollah crashed into the place of worship seeking to kill as many Jewish people as he could. The alleged attacker was a Lebanese-born man who a week earlier had lost relatives in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon.
“Hurt people, hurt people,” El-Sayed said in response to the attack. He was criticized by members of his own party, including Michigan Secretary of State Dana Nessel, who discussed the comments in a recent interview with The Atlantic, and declined to attend this past weekend’s convention partly over concerns of antisemitism in the Democratic Party.
El-Sayed told Fox News Digital his comments “might have been misconstrued to be justifying something I did not intend to justify,” but then offered an apology.
“To anybody who feels like my comments may have been hurtful, I’m really sorry. That was not my intention. We condemned that terrorist attack. We condemned it outright,” El-Sayed added. “What I was trying to do was offer context for why it happened, but it wasn’t the time for context and you don’t ever want to trample somebody’s pain.”
El-Sayed is an epidemiologist and former Wayne County Health Department director who, if elected in November, would make history as the nation’s first Muslim senator. He has argued against unconditional U.S. military aid to Israel, as have other progressive politicians. And El-Sayed has repeatedly declined to directly answer whether Israel has the right to exist.
He said his message to Jewish voters in Michigan is, “We may not agree on everything when it comes to foreign policy… I’m not going to stop fighting for Palestinian self-determination… but that does not mean that I will not stand up… for safety for all communities and I believe in the safety and dignity of Jewish kids like I believe in the safety and dignity of my own kids.”
Before taking questions from reporters, El-Sayed met in Lansing with the state’s Democratic Jewish Caucus.
“He just had a very good meeting with us,” Daniel Rivkin, a convention delegate and member of the caucus, told Fox News Digital, as he referred to El-Sayed. “We’re having real conversations.”

The El-Sayee campaign is also in the process of hiring a Jewish liaison, Fox News Digital confirmed on Monday.
But some Jewish leaders in Michigan went public on Saturday with an open letter urging Jewish Democrats and independents in the state to sign their names in support of Rogers, who is making a second straight run for the Senate after falling just 20,000 votes short in 2024.
“Many of us have been fiercely supportive of Democratic candidates and principles. All of us have felt threatened and alienated by the politics and allies embraced by Abdul El-Sayed, which has included demonization of Jews, equivocation on terrorism, exclusion of Jewish Americans from public life, and expression of implacable hatred of the world’s only Jewish nation,” the letter stated.
Rogers, in a statement highlighting the letter, claimed that “Abdul El-Sayed fans the flames of antisemitism. We’re fighting to extinguish it.”
In an interview Monday morning on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends,” Rogers said, “We’ve had so many Democrat Jewish people here in the state of Michigan ring up our phone and say, “I can’t do this. I’m for you.”

Referring to El-Sayed, Rogers said, “When someone says you might have been offended by what I said, that’s not an apology.”
And he claimed that El-Sayed “has a long history of antisemitic and inflammatory comments.”
But El-Sayed has repeatedly pushed back, saying, “My commitment to Jewish safety is the same as my commitment to the safety of my own kids. We have a responsibility to take on antisemitism in all of its forms, wherever we see it.”
Making El-Sayed’s mission to make peace with Jewish Democrats and independents more difficult is the backing he receives from Piker.
Piker recently featured on his stream an image of state Sen. Jeremy Moss, the Democratic nominee in Michigan’s 11th Congressional District. Moss, who is Jewish, has said that people are sharing a fake audio clip of him claiming that his entire reason for running for Congress is to make sure that America continues to support Israel.
“If Jews in America keep putting this idea out there that they are singularly invested in Israel, eventually someone is going to come around and take action, not against the state of Israel, mind you, but against American Jews,” Piker warned.

Piker, who endorsed El-Sayed for the Democratic nomination and appeared at some of the candidate’s campaign events including a primary night party in Detroit, has repeatedly stood by his numerous past comments critical of Israel over its ongoing war against Hamas in Gaza.
El-Sayed, who over the past week appeared to try and distance himself from Piker, responded to the firestorm by saying, “I want to be crystal clear, nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my campaign spokespeople.”
On Saturday, El-Sayed was peppered with questions from reporters about Piker.
“We’re in the state of Michigan. If you want to make this race about a streamer in California, I just think you’re missing the boat,” El-Sayed told reporters. “This is about affordability in Michigan. This is about seeing a doctor in Michigan. This is about Donald Trump’s disastrous policies in Michigan. That’s what I’m focused on right now.”
As the questions about Piker continued, El-Sayed repeatedly characterized him as “a streamer from California” who is irrelevant to his race in Michigan. “This is not a serious conversation.”

Besides his numerous antisemitic comments, Piker is known for saying “America deserved 9/11,” praising Mao Zedong and Communist China, and arguing that capitalists should be murdered in the streets.
The Democrats’ discord over Israel comes as most GOP leaders continue to showcase their support for Israeli leaders. As the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual leadership summit got underway Sunday evening in Las Vegas, El-Sayed and the far-left drew boos from the audience of high-powered GOP activists and donors.
Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters, speaking Monday at the RJC gathering, said that “the same hatred that fueled” the Oct. 7, 2023 large-scale attack by Hamas on Israel that killed about 1,200 people and triggered the ongoing war “is growing right here in our backyard.”
“It has found a home in the Democratic Party. This did not happen overnight. It happened step-by-step as radical extremists took over the party, and the Democratic leaders let them,” Gruters argued.
Meanwhile, there’s no letup in the battle between the left and the center for the future of the Democratic Party.
Rahm Emanuel, a former ambassador, congressman, Chicago mayor and former White House chief of staff to then-President Barack Obama, took aim at the socialist push taking aim at the party’s establishment.
“The Democratic Party is not open to being taken over,” Emanuel, who’s seriously mulling a 2028 White House run, told Fox News’ Shannon Bream on “Fox News Sunday.”

“I don’t consider the Democratic Socialists are part of the Democratic Party. About four weeks ago, they had a convention in Chicago. Separate party. They believe in defunding police, letting prisoners out of prison, opening borders, eliminating the Pentagon. If you’re so confident people want that, I’ll see you in November. Put it on the ballot. Let’s go. Run as a separate party,” Emanuel emphasized.
Democratic Party leaders, when asked about the party’s current ideological warfare, often point to Democrats as a “big tent” party.
But veteran Democratic strategist Julian Epstein criticizes such responses and jabs at his party for failing to call out the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
“They’ve taken cover behind the empty ‘Big Tent” lie as radical DSA members and allies, like Michigan’s Abdul El-Sayed and Colorado’s Melat Kiros, triumph in Democratic primaries,” Epstein wrote in an opinion piece last week in the New York Post.
Epstein, who served as chief counsel for the Democratic minority on the House Judiciary Committee during the 1998 impeachment proceeds against then-President Bill Clinton and who later served on Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, argued, “Moderates should unite and shed the Big Tent delusion — because they have nothing to lose but their chains.”

With the House of Representatives back in session, a resolution “condemning socialism in all its forms” could see a vote later this week.
Rep. Jeff Crank, R-Colo., introduced a measure Thursday condemning socialism in all its forms, telling Fox News Digital he wanted to use the vote to force moderate House Democrats to take a more public stance against the DSA.

President Donald Trump keeps trying to preemptively blame congressional Republicans if they lose big in the 2026 midterms — but he’s now making an argument that’s flat-out wrong.
His talking point in a recent interview underscored how culpable he would be if his party loses this fall.
In the interview with Fox News host Trey Gowdy that aired Sunday, Trump appeared to confirm reports that his midterm efforts will largely focus on touting his own record. “I’m going to go out, and I’m going to campaign like I did for myself,” he said.
Then Trump slipped in his latest effort to suggest it’s congressional Republicans — not him — whom people dislike.
“But some people like me more than they like the party,” Trump said. “I mean, you can’t be insulted by it. There’s nothing you can do about it.”
This echoes the president’s prior commentary, including telling Punchbowl News this month that voters are “angry at Republicans, but they’re not angry at me.”
Spending time months before the election pre-blaming your fellow Republicans is remarkable.
But it’s also just wrong. Not only is there evidence that Trump is to blame for his party’s midterm woes, but it’s not true that there are a bunch of people who like Trump but not his party.
The most recent CNN polling on this is from last month. It showed the Republican Party’s image was 21 points underwater; 52% viewed it unfavorably, compared with 31% who viewed it favorably. (The rest offered no opinion.)
But Trump’s approval rating was 32 points underwater; 66% of Americans disapproved of him, while 34% approved.
(Approval is generally a measure of job performance, while favorability is a measure of personal appeal. But the numbers are often correlated.)
CBS News polling this month showed Americans viewed the GOP unfavorably 60%-40%. Its July poll showed Americans disapproved of Trump 61%-39%.
Polling from Marquette University Law School in July specifically tested Republicans in Congress, and it also showed little difference in perceptions between them and Trump.
While Americans disapproved of congressional Republicans 63%-37%, they disapproved of Trump 60%-40%.
The poll also tested the broader party’s image and found little difference between the GOP and Trump. While Americans viewed Trump unfavorably 60%-38%, they viewed the party unfavorably 58%-39%.
So Trump is about as unpopular as the GOP — despite his claims that people like him but not other Republicans. And that’s actually unusual.
Politicians these days are usually more popular than their parties and their broader congressional contingents because clear majorities generally dislike political parties. In fact, in CNN polling dating to 2006, at least 50% of Americans have disliked the GOP in 49 out of 67 polls.
Beyond that, there is little reason to believe the GOP’s midterm problems are predominantly because of congressional Republicans, and all kinds of reason to believe they’re about Trump.
Polling has shown independents turning overwhelmingly against Trump. And it also increasingly shows large numbers of Republican-leaning voters growing disillusioned with Trump on a series of issues — often 30%, 40% or even 50%-plus.
When presidents’ approval ratings are as low as Trump’s (which is generally in the 30s), their party almost always suffers large losses in the midterms.
The July CNN poll also showed that twice as many registered voters said their midterm vote was intended to send a message of opposition to Trump (40%) rather than a message of support for him (18%). We haven’t seen a gap like that on this question since George W. Bush and the 2006 midterms (41%-16%). And the Pew Research Center’s polling echoes CNN’s finding.
If anything, congressional Republicans might be doing a little better than one might expect, given how bad Trump’s numbers are. Some on the left are a little concerned that their party hasn’t opened up a wider lead on the “generic ballot,”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stXOo9RmOVI in which pollsters ask people whether they would vote for a generic Democrat or a generic Republican.
And even on Monday, a day after Trump’s Fox interview aired, there was yet more data showing how Trump has depressed his base.
The percentage of Trump voters who said they were “very confident” about their 2024 vote dropped all the way to 58%— from 74% when the University of Massachusetts Amherst asked the question in April 2025.
Midterms are almost always a referendum on the president. That referendum doesn’t appear to be going well for Trump, so he’s trying to shift the narrative. But the data doesn’t back him up.

WASHINGTON, Aug 31 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new round of drug-pricing agreements with international pharmaceutical companies and some smaller biotechs on Monday, part of a push to make healthcare more affordable for Americans.
Deals were signed with nine companies including Astellas, BeOne Medicines, CSL, BridgeBIO, Sun Pharmaceutical, Teva and UCB SA.

These companies have offered drugs to state Medicaid programs at most-favored-nation prices, Trump said in an Oval Office event with executives of the companies, describing this as “a tremendous discount, which should bring down the cost of your medical care by tremendous amounts.”
U.S. patients currently pay by far the most for prescription medicines, often nearly three times more than in other developed nations, and Trump has been pressuring drugmakers to lower their prices to what patients pay elsewhere.
The deals will build on agreements the administration struck with 17 of the world’s largest drugmakers, including Pfizer, Eli Lilly and Amgen, starting last year. The drugmakers agreed to offer lower prices comparable to what is paid in other developed countries, referred to as “most-favored-nation” pricing.

Those companies agreed to cut some prices for federal health programs and sell some medicines directly to patients through a Trump-branded website, in return for tariff relief.
Smaller and mid-sized drugmakers had been slow to sign onto drug-pricing deals, Reuters has reported.
A Reuters report in June found that only Japan’s Astellas had confirmed applying for the Medicaid pricing program by that point, with executives at companies such as Ionis Pharmaceuticals saying they saw little financial benefit in joining.
It is not yet clear how much the deals will save the government or patients. Medicaid already gets steep discounts from drugmakers under existing law, and most people covered by the program pay little out of pocket for prescriptions.
The White House has held several high-profile events with pharmaceutical executives this year to promote its efforts on healthcare costs, part of a broader push to highlight affordability before this year’s midterm elections that will decide control of Congress.

Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed is facing a wave of online blowback after dodging questions about his ties to far-left streamer Hasan Piker, a frequent presence on the campaign trail in Michigan.
When asked about Piker’s influence on his campaign, El-Sayed told reporters the race is about Michigan and that he is “not interested in a conversation about a social media person in California.”
“But I don’t want to have a conversation about a Twitch streamer in California,” El-Sayed said. “This is not a serious conversation.”
Fox News Digital then pressed El-Sayed on why he brought Piker to Michigan if that was the case, which he waved off before doubling down and calling Piker “a single streamer from California” when another reporter asked if he would condemn him.

The clip exploded across social media and drew widespread ridicule as El-Sayed scrambles to distance himself from the streamer, who has roughly 10 million social media followers.
In a post on X, writer and political commentator Stephen L. Miller wrote, “Amazing. They are so terrified of him that she literally jumps in one question deep.”
“Who is the candidate here?” Miller wrote in another post.
“This keeps getting worse,” Republican political strategist Kyle Martinsen posted on X.
“I’m interested in it so there’s a problem here,” Townhall senior columnist Kurt Schlichter posted on X.
In another post on X, “The Charlie Kirk Show” executive producer Andrew Kolvet wrote, “It’s very clear Abul El Sayed is panicking. He went from doing a half dozen campaign stops with Hasan Piker and taking glamor shots with him, to refusing to say his name. Now he’s just ‘some media person in California.’ What a pal.”

“He might be worse than Kamala…,” Fox News contributor Joe Concha posted on X.
Pro-Israel activist and philanthropist Adam Milstein also wrote in a post on X, “El Sayed again refuses to condemn Hasan Piker — who himself recently confirmed it was El Sayed that asked him to campaign for him, not the reverse.”
Piker has emerged as a growing flashpoint within the Democratic Party over his past controversial remarks, including his claim that “America deserved 9/11.”
Last week, El-Sayed responded to outrage over his association with Piker after the streamer’s comments on a viral audio clip involving Jewish Michigan state Sen. Jeremy Moss, the Democratic nominee in the state’s 11th Congressional District, sparked outrage.
“I want to be crystal clear, nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my campaign spokespeople,” El-Sayed said in a statement.

Despite El-Sayed’s attempts to distance himself from Piker, the streamer has spoken openly about his invitation to join the campaign, saying at an April rally with El-Sayed, “The reason why, when Abdul asked for me to come on this journey with him, I said yes, absolutely.”
In a Friday interview with Semafor columnist David Weigel, Piker said El-Sayed also asked him to “stump” for his campaign.
El-Sayed will face Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers for retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters’ seat in a race that could determine control of the Senate.

A likely Russian-speaking cybercriminal gang on Monday leaked what appear to be sensitive law enforcement files it stole from the Justice Department’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The dumped files appear to include information on targets of past ATF investigations and analyses of their phone communications, according to a review of the data by CNN and an independent cybersecurity researcher. Some of the files correspond to specific ATF agents and high-profile cases they apparently worked on.
The data cover investigations related to armed robbery, arson, explosives and homicide, according to the researcher, Ron Fabela. A chunk of the cases mentioned in the files fall under the work the ATF’s Houston Field Division, Fabela said.
In a statement on Monday, ATF said it “cannot confirm the authenticity, nature, or scope” of the leaked data at this time and that the agency was working with the Department of Justice and other federal agencies to “assess the claims and take appropriate actions.”
“As ATF previously stated, the affected system was not connected to – and the incident did not affect – ATF’s other operational systems. ATF’s ability to carry out its mission has not been impacted,” the agency’s statement continued.
ATF originally disclosed the hack last week, saying it met the threshold for a “major” cybersecurity incident that requires notifying Congress. Under federal law, a “major” cyber incident is generally one that could harm US national security, foreign policy or economic interests.
A prolific ransomware group called Qilin previously claimed responsibility for the breach; on Monday, the group began leaking the files from its dark -web victim site. The group has claimed victims in the manufacturing, retail and healthcare sectors in recent years, leading Cisco’s cyber-intelligence unit to brand it one of the “most prolific and damaging ransomware threats on a global scale.”
Halcyon, another cybersecurity firm that tracks ransomware groups, has said it has “high-confidence” that Qilin are Russian speakers.
The ATF hack is the latest headache for federal agencies involving the cybercriminals they often pursue. A 2023 ransomware attack on the US Marshals Service affected personal information of the subjects of the service’s investigations. That same year, hackers breached a computer system the FBI’s New York field office used in investigations of images of child sexual exploitation, including a system used to store images related to the investigation of Jeffrey Epstein, according to people briefed on the matter.

President Donald Trump took aim Monday at the growing backlash against data centers, warning that communities that shut the door on the facilities risk missing out on the jobs and economic gains of America’s AI boom.
“The only reason that communities throughout the U.S.A. should not want Data Centers is if they want to end up being backwards and poor,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “If they want to be successful and rich, with far lower taxes and jobs all over the place, let Data Reign,” he added.
Trump has made energy dominance and U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence central pillars of his second term, placing data centers at the center of his push to maintain America’s edge over China.
“China could not be happier with this anti Data Center movement,” Trump wrote, arguing that resistance to new facilities risks undercutting America’s edge in the global AI race.

The data center boom has also emerged as a midterm flashpoint, as concerns over rising electricity costs, water use and rapid development collide with promises of jobs, investment and U.S. dominance in artificial intelligence.
That tension is already playing out across the country.
Trump has specifically criticized Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s approach, calling the Lone Star State’s stance toward data centers a “mistake” and pointing to the economic investment the projects can bring to communities willing to host them.
Texas has cemented its status as a heavyweight in the industry, with Dallas ranking as the world’s No. 1 primary data center market in Cushman & Wakefield’s 2026 Global Data Center Market Comparison. But billions of dollars in new investment have also brought enormous electricity demands and questions over who should pay for the infrastructure needed to support the boom.
Abbott has moved to address those concerns, directing regulators to ensure data centers cover the infrastructure costs needed to serve them and calling on developers to add their own power generation rather than shift costs onto Texas residents.

Other governors have taken a more restrictive stance. Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul imposed a one-year moratorium on new hyper-scale data centers as states grapple with concerns over electricity costs, grid reliability and the pace of development.
