Newsom spars with Trump-appointed prosecutor over 20,000 suspected noncitizens on voter rolls

The dispute centers on a Justice Department list of California voters flagged as potential noncitizens

Governor Gavin Newsom and Bill Essayli, a Trump-appointed federal prosecutor in California, sparred on social media this week about whether the state is doing enough to prevent noncitizens from voting.

Essayli, the first assistant U.S. attorney for California’s Central District, surfaced a court document filed Tuesday in which a Los Angeles County election official said the registrar’s office “is not equipped or authorized to verify voter citizenship because it does not independently house citizenship-related information beyond the voter attestation.”

The official, Monica Flores, made the declaration as part of a Justice Department lawsuit seeking to force California to verify the citizenship of more than 20,000 people the federal government believes are likely noncitizens who were sent mail ballots ahead of this year’s midterm elections.

Essayli called Flores’ statement a “massive concession” that shows election officials take voters’ word on whether they are a citizen.

STATE DEPARTMENT CONSIDERS SHARING PASSPORT RECORDS FOR VOTER CITIZENSHIP CHECKS

“American citizens’ votes are being diluted in California,” Essayli wrote.

In response, Newsom’s press office account on X said California adheres to a 1993 federal law that requires people registering to vote through the DMV to swear under penalty of perjury that they are eligible, including that they are U.S. citizens. Similar attestation requirements apply to federal mail-in voter registration forms.

“May want to brush up on your election law before tweeting,” Newsom’s office wrote in a jab at Essayli. “Perhaps Second Assistant is more apt from now on?”

Essayli fired back by citing two federal statutes that make it unlawful for noncitizens to vote in federal elections.

‘RAW MATERIAL FOR ELECTION FRAUD’: EXPERT FLAGS VOTER-ROLL PROBLEMS FAR BEYOND ONE STATE

The public spat highlighted the central dispute in the lawsuit against California: whether the state should take additional steps to verify the citizenship of voters when the federal government flags potential issues with the rolls.

According to the Justice Department’s complaint, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) cross-checked California voter registration records with federal immigration data.

That investigative process, described by DOJ lawyers as “preliminary,” yielded a list of more than 20,000 registered voters federal investigators identified as likely noncitizens. California voters were mailed ballots beginning Oct. 1.

In its initial complaint filed Oct. 15, the Justice Department asked a federal court to require California to set aside mail ballots associated with people on the list until their citizenship could be verified.

Flores, an official with the LA County Registrar’s Office, argued that doing so is now virtually impossible because once a ballot’s signature is verified, it is removed from its identifying envelope and processed alongside hundreds of thousands of others.

DOJ OFFICIAL DEFENDS TRUMP’S NONCITIZEN VOTER PROBE ON ’60 MINUTES,’ ACCUSES SHOW OF EDITING OUT HER ANSWERS

As of Tuesday, the county has processed 331,000 ballots, according to Flores’ statement in court.

She also pointed out that the registrar’s office is “not an investigative agency,” adding that she was unaware of “any state or federal law granting it investigative authority.”

Nonetheless, staff from the registrar’s office reviewed a sample of 200 records from the Justice Department list that had LA County addresses.

“The October list is unreliable: 112 of the 200 records correspond to registrations that are canceled or inactive,” according to Flores’ statement. “Of the voters where birthplace was meaningfully reported, 38.9% indicate that they were born in the United States, which is strong evidence of citizenship; and 71.2% of the records have no voting history.”

In a statement to Fox News, Essayli said these reported numbers “are meaningless because, by their own admission, they have no way to verify anyone’s citizenship status or their birthplace.”

There are indications that the Justice Department list does contain at least some individuals who could have broken the law.

On Monday, the Justice Department charged 28 individuals off that list, all lawful permanent residents, with making false statements on naturalization applications and fraudulently registering to vote. Most of them cast unlawful ballots in elections, officials said.

Dr. Oz takes Americans behind the doors of ‘clubhouse for crooks’ as feds hunt Medicare fraud

Dr. Oz’s ‘War on Fraud’ puts spotlight on Medicaid abuse after surprise NYC senior daycare crackdown

CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz travels the nation exposing alleged healthcare program fraud in new doc. Fox News Digital joined Oz Tuesday in New York as he confronted senior daycare operators in surprise federal Medicaid fraud crackdown.

FIRST ON FOX: Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz is taking Americans inside the Trump administration’s war on health care fraud in a new documentary highlighting massive Medicare schemes, suspected hospice scams and allegations of organized crime involvement.

The 27-minute film, “War on Fraud,” first obtained by Fox News Digital, follows Oz across the country as he spotlights alleged fraud schemes targeting taxpayer-funded health care programs and details the administration’s efforts to crack down on those responsible.

“All these programs come back to one basic issue: Fraudsters and criminals don’t give a s–t about you. They want your money, and they will walk all over your health, sacrifice your life and betray society’s trust to get your hard-earned money,” said Oz in the video.

The documentary follows Oz across the country as he investigates suspected fraud involving Medicare, Medicaid, hospice care and other programs, with appearances from HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and CMS Deputy Administrator Kim Brandt.

Fox News Digital accompanied Oz Tuesday as he confronted workers at New York City senior day care centers suspected of questionable Medicaid billing practices during a sweeping federal fraud investigation.

More than 80 New York City providers received warning letters from CMS over questionable billing practices as part of a broader operation involving the FBI, HHS-OIG, NYPD and other agencies.

“FBI New York, along with multiple other law enforcement agencies are conducting law enforcement activity in the area of Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and other locations around New York City in connection with ongoing federal investigations,” an FBI spokesperson said of the crackdown.

Oz flagged what he described as a series of irregularities, including low attendance despite high Medicaid billing, questionable wheelchair transportation charges, seniors entering without signing in, inconsistent attendance claims and sign-in sheets containing future-dated entries.

The crackdown comes as CMS is pulling back the curtain on its broader war on fraud, releasing a new documentary that takes viewers inside the agency’s efforts to track down schemes siphoning taxpayer dollars from America’s healthcare programs.

In one segment of the film, Oz highlights hospice care as a hotbed for potential fraud, pointing to the Los Angeles area, where he says roughly 2,000 hospice providers operate — a concentration he argues has raised serious concerns about fraudulent billing.

Oz claims in the documentary that Russian organized crime groups are involved in some suspected hospice fraud operations, alleging that unsuspecting patients are being enrolled in hospice care under false pretenses.

He claims the schemes involve falsely declaring patients terminally ill and misleading them into enrolling in hospice care, potentially limiting their access to treatment for conditions classified as terminal while allowing fraudulent operators to bill Medicare for services under false pretenses.

Minnesota has become a major focus of the Trump administration’s broader crackdown on government benefits fraud following a series of high-profile scandals involving taxpayer-funded programs.

CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz is unveiling a new documentary exposing the agency’s hunt for healthcare fraud and schemes draining billions from taxpayers.(CMS)

Oz said Minnesota’s $250 million “Feeding Our Future” scandal helped intensify the administration’s focus on large-scale fraud, pointing to a case that erupted into the national spotlight in 2022 and has since produced a wave of federal convictions.

The White House Task Force on Fraud, led by Vice President JD Vance, has joined Oz in a media blitz highlighting alleged scams as the administration ramps up its crackdown on corruption in taxpayer-funded programs.

The documentary highlights one of the largest alleged Medicare fraud schemes in U.S. history, involving $3.7 billion in fraudulent billing claims tied to medical equipment companies operating in Delray Beach, Florida, according to federal prosecutors.

Federal prosecutors allege the scheme involved billing for medical equipment patients never requested or needed, with accused the accused ringleader fleeing the U.S. before being captured in Turkey and returned to South Florida to face federal charges.

The documentary also shows Oz during an earlier visit to Flushing, Queens, where he describes a cluster of businesses — including a social adult day care center, pharmacy and medical center — as a “clubhouse for crooks,” alleging the businesses are part of a fraudulent billing operation.

Oz says they recruit seniors, get them in, game the system and they use their ID numbers to charge everybody. “Which means they are charging you.”

A Minnesota rapper has stood by his social media posts idolizing the increasingly violent protests in France, which resulted in some 2,500 arrests over the weekend.

Tufawon, whose real name is Rafael Gonzalez Jr., made a series of posts on Facebook advocating for White people in the United States to “go outside and raise hell” after he and Greta Thunberg visited Lycée Paul Éluard, the high school in Saint-Denis where many of the student demonstrations kicked off this month.

“Do I think way more people need to become radicalized here? Absolutely, especially white people, and that’s where I think we can take influence from the French.”

“All Power to the People!” the 40-year-old rapper wrote on Facebook. “Go f— s— up white people. It’s your time.”

In an earlier post, he clarified that when he says White Americans need to “raise hell” or “f— s— up” about supposed fascism and authoritarianism under the Trump administration, he means they need to “take it to next level peacefully and legally.”

And in a statement to The New York Post, Tufawon said his Facebook posts “fall under figurative speech and in no way, shape or form did I use them with the intent to incite violence of any kind.”

Tufawon, who is part Native American, also told the Post that his participation in some of the French protests last week was impromptu because he had been on vacation in the country.

In one video, he was in front of a crowd chanting “f— ICE” and “ICE out” before performing his song “No One Is Illegal.”

The protests in France, which began weeks ago as student-led demonstrations against poor classroom conditions and education funding cuts, have now devolved into widespread riots involving a range of political and ideological factions.

VIOLENCE ERUPTS AT FRANCE PROTESTS AS MACRON WARNS UNREST IS BEING EXPLOITED

Images and videos posted to social media on Saturday and Sunday showed groups of men waving foreign flags while engaging in acts of destruction on the streets of France’s major cities.

A Fox News Digital investigation found that communist organizations, Islamic advocacy groups, labor unions and environmental activists were involved in the unrest.

French officials said they have arrested over 2,500 people in connection with the demonstrations, which have drawn participants motivated by a range of issues, including the cost of living and climate change.

On Saturday, hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets across the country, though looting and violence broke out in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux and other cities.

Shops were broken into, vehicles and buildings were set on fire and in Marseille, the city hall building was set ablaze by agitators. Rioters have so far caused about $1 billion in damage.

President Donald Trump has preemptively sought to discourage similar conduct in the U.S., saying Tuesday that federal law enforcement would treat potential rioters “very, very rough.”

More demonstrations are planned across France on Saturday, with French officials planning a massive security deployment ahead of time to deal with expected unrest.

    而涉及前驻希腊大使金伯利· Guilfoyle(注:标准译名为金伯利·吉尔德福伊尔)的风波最终促使特朗普将其解雇。

The growing corruption allegations engulfing Trump’s orbit — at a bad time for the GOP

    2026-10-21T19:06:15.932Z / CNN

There is increasing evidence that voters are concerned about corruption ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. A CNN poll on Wednesday showed 19% of registered voters say it’s their top issue — behind only a combination of the economy and the cost of living.

And two weeks before Election Day, the Trump administration is suddenly inundating them with rather vivid stories of alleged corruption.

Indeed, while the corruption issue has long stalked President Donald Trump thanks to his laissez-faire approach to self-enrichment — and his explosion of wealth during his time as president — the examples of potential Trump administration corruption in recent weeks have become almost cartoonish.

Just over the past month-plus, the following reports have surfaced:

    • A now-former ambassador who asked for $100,000 to cover her credit card debt from a man she was helping lobby the administration — and repeatedly urged the man not to leave a paper trail, according to texts obtained by the Wall Street Journal. Her lawyers have denied the allegations.
    • The Department of Homeland Security buying multiple airplanes from a donor to the outgoing secretary at apparently inflated prices. The former secretary and current secretary have pointed to one another for the purchases.
    • A Russian oligarch paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for parts of Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding celebration. Trump Jr.’s wife downplayed the idea that there was anything amiss with the arrangement, but the oligarch later said Trump Jr. had refunded the money.
    • A mysterious alleged multimillion-dollar transfer from a wealthy Turkish investor that one Trump ally (who recently married the investor) claims another Trump ally misallocated, according to reports in Axios and the Times. More on that complicated mess below.
    • That same first Trump ally, married to the Turkish investor, accepting a job that would pay her $50 million even as she served as a top adviser in Trump’s Justice Department — shortly before the billionaire Venezuelan banker who hired her got a pardon he had been seeking. She denied any role in the pardon.

That last one is the latest addition.

The New York Times’ Tyler Pager reported that Alina Habba secured the $50 million employment deal with a company that had only recently been set up and doesn’t have a public profile. She also reportedly finalized the deal even as she was still serving as US attorney in New Jersey, and she began the job when she was serving as a special government employee advising then-Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Two weeks after she started her job, the Venezuelan banker who hired her — Julio Herrera Velutini — received his pardon, the Times reported.

Habba has denied playing any role, saying in a statement to the Times, “Any insinuation that my employment — all of which has been vetted and disclosed to the DOJ — had anything to do with securing a pardon is false.” She would not talk about her work for the company, Concord Partners.

But that’s not even the only controversy involving Habba in the last seven days. Axios and the Times also reported a week ago about her allegation that fellow Trump ally Richard Grenell misallocated millions of dollars that her now-husband — wealthy Turkish investor Turhan Mildon — had intended as a donation for the Kennedy Center.

That money was reportedly wired to a Texas defense and security equipment company for which Grenell says he formerly consulted. Mildon has extensive business interests in Venezuela, and the Times reported he has produced a text message in which Grenell allegedly said he wanted to make Mildon the “American face down in V,” referring to Venezuela.

Grenell has called the allegations absurd, telling the Times: “I’ve never asked for one cent to be sent somewhere else pretending it was for the Kennedy Center, and I’ve never received any payment from him.”

Trump Jr.’s wedding has led to a backlash even among congressional Republicans, some of whom want the issue probed. One senator labeled it “corruption.”

Trump Jr.’s wife has said the oligarch, Umar Kremlev, is a “dear friend.” But when ProPublica first reported on the controversy, a spokesman for Trump Jr.’s brother, Eric Trump, said that he had “absolutely no clue who this person is, nor has never heard his name.”

The airplanes purchased from a donor to now-former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem have led both her camp and current Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to downplay their roles and point the finger at each other.

Mullin’s camp said “these planes were purchased prior to Secretary Mullin’s arrival at DHS.”

Noem’s statement emphasized “the purchase was finalized under Secretary Mullin’s leadership.”

And the saga involving now-former Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle led Trump to fire her. It involved not just covertly seeking $100,000 from a man seeking favors from the administration — which the man, Eric Deters, has been happy to talk about publicly — but also some eyebrow-raising messages.

“It won’t show up anywhere if you wire money to American Express,” Guilfoyle allegedly wrote at one point in the Signal messages.

“Eric, I really wish you would stop papering all these things,” read another.

“What a nightmare you’ll literally cost me my ambassadorship stop writing,” read yet another.

Guilfoyle, who was previously engaged to Trump Jr., has disputed the allegations, calling them “false” and saying, “I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity.”

These aren’t the only remarkable and eye-catching developments for those looking out for corruption over the last two years, of course. Trump has made more than $1 billion off cryptocurrency. He’s repeatedly promoted companies shortly after buying their stock, according to a CNN investigation. His social media company is allowing Wall Street firms to pay for quicker access to market-moving posts. And he accepted a jet as a gift from Qatar to use as Air Force One; it is supposed to be transferred to his presidential library.

But there is evidence this issue is starting to gain traction of late. That doesn’t mean it will be a huge liability for Trump and the GOP, but it’s certainly something to watch.

A Gallup poll recently showed a record-high 89% of Americans said corruption was widespread in the US government.

In addition to the CNN poll showing 19% of registered voters said it was their top issue, a recent Fox News poll showed 88% of registered voters said they were “extremely” (60%) or “very” (28%) concerned about corruption in government. Those numbers rival 2006, at the height of the sprawling Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal.

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed registered voters disapproved of Trump’s handling of corruption 62%-29%.

And a Washington Post/ABC News poll showed nearly two-thirds of Americans said Trump was using the presidency to enrich himself.

One point in the GOP’s favor here: There is also evidence that the issue might not favor Democrats as much as they’d hope.

The CNN poll showed registered voters favored the Democratic Party on the issue by 7 points, 33%-26%. And a New York Times/Siena College poll shows likely voters favor the Democrats, 50%-39%. But the Reuters-Ipsos poll showed a virtual tie, with 31% favoring both parties, and nearly 4 in 10 registered voters picking neither side.

And while a recent NBC News poll showed a slight majority of Americans (52%) said the Trump administration was “more corrupt” than previous administrations, just 25% said corruption was generally more of a problem in the Republican Party than the Democratic Party. And 56% said it was “equally” a problem in both parties.

In other words, the numbers don’t clearly illustrate how this issue will play in the election in two weeks. But the Trump administration seemingly can’t stop giving Democrats more material to work with.

    2026-10-21T16:59:33.995Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/21/politics/new-mexico-epstein-lawsuit

New Mexico attorney general files civil lawsuit against two Epstein advisers

    2026-10-21T16:59:33.995Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/21/politics/new-mexico-epstein-lawsuit

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez on Wednesday filed a civil lawsuit against two of Jeffrey Epstein’s closest advisers, accusing them of having “facilitated and concealed” Epstein’s crimes.

The advisers, Darren Indyke and Richard Kahn, have faced scrutiny over their ties to the late sex offender since the Justice Department released files related to Epstein late last year.

Indyke, a longtime Epstein employee and attorney, and Kahn, Epstein’s longtime accountant, are the co-executors of Epstein’s estate. Earlier this year, Torrez’s office began investigating the property Epstein owned in the state, known as Zorro Ranch, after allegations about it were included in files.

The two advisers have denied any knowledge of or involvement in Epstein’s sex trafficking operation.

Torrez said during a news conference on Wednesday that the civil lawsuit aims to prevent Indyke and Kahn from getting any money from Epstein’s trust. CNN has previously reported that as part of Epstein’s will, Indyke was left with $50 million and Kahn was left $25 million.

Indyke and Kahn said during their congressional depositions that they haven’t received any money for their work overseeing the estate. Attorneys for the two previously told CNN that any fee or any bequests from the trust would come only after the estate’s creditors and claimants have been compensated and after the probate is concluded.

“Frankly, if anyone is entitled to a recovery of Jeffrey Epstein’s estate, it’s the survivors,” Torrez said, adding, “There should be no distribution of Mr. Epstein’s remaining assets to people like Mr. Indyke and Mr. Kahn for participation in what I think is one of the most horrific criminal enterprises in modern American history.”

CNN has reached out to lawyers for Indyke and Kahn for comment.

Wednesday’s civil lawsuit comes as Indyke and Kahn are also reportedly under federal investigation. They have additionally faced multiple lawsuits from survivors for compensation.

In February, Torrez reopened New Mexico’s criminal investigation into Zorro Ranch after the files released by DOJ included a 2019 email received by a local radio host that alleged that “somewhere in the hills outside the Zorro, two foreign girls were buried on orders of Jeffrey and Madam G.”

As part of the probe, New Mexico authorities have searched the property. Torrez has also filed a lawsuit against DOJ and US Attorney General Todd Blanche, accusing the department of “hiding information about Epstein and his co-conspirators” and “stonewalling” the state’s investigation.

Separately, a bipartisan commission of New Mexico lawmakers are also looking into the allegations of criminal activity surrounding Zorro Ranch and have issued multiple subpoenas, though not to Indyke and Kahn.

Earlier this year, Indyke and Kahn sat for closed-door depositions with the House Oversight Committee, during which they said that they were unaware of Epstein’s crimes, despite having worked for Epstein for decades and being intimately involved in Epstein’s business dealings and finances.

“Let me be clear: I had no knowledge whatsoever of Jeffrey Epstein’s wrongdoings,” said Indyke, who began working for Epstein in 1996, during the March deposition. “My complete lack of involvement in that misconduct is a matter of record. Not a single woman has ever accused me of committing sexual abuse or witnessing sexual abuse, or claimed at any time that she or anyone else reported to me any allegation of Mr. Epstein’s abuse.”

Meanwhile, Kahn, who began working for Epstein in 2005 and said he only saw him approximately every three weeks, then told lawmakers, “We did not interact socially, and I never attended any of his parties of his social functions. While Epstein was alive, I never observed any sexual abuse or trafficking of women and never received a complaint — either by one of Epstein’s victims or anyone else — of such abuse or trafficking.”

Both men also said during the depositions that if they had known about Epstein’s trafficking of women and girls while working for him, they would have cut ties with him immediately.

This story has been updated with additional information.

CNN’s Em Steck and Annie Grayer contributed to this report.

    2026-10-21T18:16:13.945Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/21/politics/georgia-election-board-secretary-of-state-trump

Top Georgia election officials clash over Trump-fueled conspiracy theories

    2026-10-21T18:16:13.945Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/21/politics/georgia-election-board-secretary-of-state-trump

    Whitfield County, Georgia—

On his nationwide campaign swing for Republicans, President Donald Trump traveled to Dalton, the self-proclaimed “Carpet Capital of the World,” last week and revived a familiar falsehood: that Georgia’s past elections were rigged.

In the rural manufacturing hub, democracy was humming. More than 900 people streamed through the Whitfield County courthouse — far and away the county’s busiest day in the first week of early voting. And in this deep-red part of northwest Georgia, the official overseeing those ballots had a sharply different message.

Whitfield County Election Director Shaynee Bryson told CNN that Georgia elections are secure, calling Trump’s claims “discouraging.”

“We do try to overlook it because we know the truth,” Bryson said. “And the majority of our voters know the truth.”

Election distrust has taken root here since 2020, as it has in many parts of red-leaning America. Bryson, who identifies with neither party, has spent election after election batting down false claims and conspiracy theories.

“I’ll say, ‘You know I agree with a lot of points that you agree on as well. Why would I ever rig it to be a different way for another candidate to win?’” she said.

Bryson fears election tensions are boiling up again. Her staff has started opening mail with gloves and masks after letters containing suspicious white substances arrived this month at election and political offices across the country, including in Georgia.

“I worry about Election Day workers at times,” Bryson said, “That’s what keeps me up at night. What if? What if?”

Few states carry more political scar tissue from 2020 than Georgia. Trump and his allies made it a centerpiece of their effort to challenge — and overturn — his defeat. That campaign included Trump’s infamous call urging Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” enough votes to reverse the result.

Since then, the Trump-aligned Georgia State Election Board has become a more powerful and combative force in an “election integrity” campaign. It has pushed tighter voting rules while raising doubts about voting systems and election results.

The board has also repeatedly attacked Raffensperger, portraying him as either incapable of running Georgia’s elections or unwilling to do so honestly.

Late last month, the board sent a letter to the Justice Department, asking the Trump administration for “intervention” in Georgia’s elections over its voting systems and machines. The request has fueled fears that Trump — who has sought greater federal control over elections — could take aggressive steps affecting the midterms in one of the country’s most closely watched battlegrounds.

Trump and his allies’ actions denying Georgia’s 2020 results became a central piece of racketeering charges against him and over a dozen of his supporters. After years of investigations, grand juries, court maneuverings, and a wild Fulton County mug shot, the case eventually crumbled before moving ahead or going to trial due to a botched prosecution.

The FBI served a search warrant to the Fulton County election warehouse outside Atlanta in January, taking roughly 700 boxes of election material to probe alleged vote fraud in the 2020 presidential election. The effort, fueled in part by 2020 election skeptics, drew sharp criticism from Raffensperger and other officials from both parties.

“Worst possible scenario: Election Day, before the votes are counted, they come in, confiscate the ballots, take them off,” Fulton County Chairman Robb Pitts told CNN. “What I’ve learned with this administration, the impossible is always possible. We’re prepared though.”

There are also concerns — even in Republican-leaning areas — about possible federal action in the election. In Cherokee County, the director of elections made a supplemental presentation for poll workers on what to do if federal agents come to polling locations.

On September 30, Georgia State Election Board Executive Director James Mills sent a formal request to federal officials seeking Justice Department involvement in a series of election-related concerns.

The five-page letter, addressed to US Attorney General Todd Blanche, Civil Rights Division chief Harmeet Dhillon and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, asked federal authorities to investigate Georgia’s voting system, review software updates for Dominion voting equipment, examine alleged security and ballot-secrecy vulnerabilities and preserve election records under federal supervision.

Mills did not respond to CNN’s questions or request for comment about the letter.

This latest chapter of political fallout from 2020 is part of a yearslong struggle between Georgia’s five-member State Election Board, which writes election rules and investigates alleged violations, and Raffensperger, whose office has been tasked with administering elections statewide since January 2019.

Republican Janelle King, who joined the board in 2024, argues Georgia’s voting system remains out of compliance with state law. She points to concerns that voters cannot independently verify QR codes printed on ballots and raises broader questions about ballot security and secrecy.

“The system itself has proven that there are vulnerabilities, whether they were exploited or not, that’s obviously up for debate,” King told CNN.

She argues that the board’s letter to the Department of Justice is justified and that its intervention is badly needed.

“It’s basically letting the secretary of state know that as the State Election Board, we are aware that Georgia’s elections are not in compliance,” King told CNN. “So we want you to fix this. And the fact that you’re not listening to us, you’re not listening to the people, maybe you will listen to the DOJ.”

King said she looks forward to working with “new blood” in the next secretary of state, regardless of their party affiliation, now that Raffensperger’s second four-year term is coming to an end.

But other current and former officials are eager to defend the state’s efforts.

“It’s obviously safe to vote in Georgia; our systems are secure,” said Gabe Sterling, who recently left his position as Georgia’s top voting manager, where he had been Raffensperger’s right-hand man since 2019.

“We have fantastic professionals who run county offices, and that’s where the rubber meets the road, Sterling told CNN.

The longtime Republican, who spent years as the chief operating officer in the secretary of state’s office and is now a senior fellow with Secure Democracy USA, said he has “very few actual real concerns” that Georgia’s voting systems could be tampered with, but does worry about potential online meddling from outside bad actors.

“The Russians, the Iranians, the Chinese continue to do those same things in social media, emails, websites to try to exacerbate difficulties and exacerbate belief and outcomes,” he said.

Sterling witnessed firsthand that dangerous rhetoric can lead to threats made to election officials, and said he’s thankful that the state election board Republican members “have no real power” and have been smacked down by the Georgia Supreme Court as well as fined for violating open records acts.

“They are just bad actors,” Sterling stressed, adding that the executive director “is now just going completely off the rails.”

Secretary of state officials and the board’s Democratic member echo Sterling, saying the latest effort is less about election security than sowing doubt about election results.

“We have the most accurate election in the entire country,” Raffensperger told CNN in an interview in his office.

He strongly pushed back on the claims in the election board letter, saying that it “wasn’t supported by the facts.”

“We’re going to make sure that we have free, fair, and fast elections,” Raffensperger said, “the voters trust the process that we have here in Georgia.”

Raffensperger, who lost the Republican primary for Georgia governor this year and will leave office in January, was not concerned about the possibility of federal interference and noted that his office has been a “great partner” to the Department of Justice.

Democratic board member Sara Tindall Ghazal told CNN that the board has become “a platform for wild conspiracy theorists.”

Ghazal called Mills’ letter a “predictable bad-faith effort to undermine confidence in our election and lay the groundwork to contest election results they do not like.”

Last May, the election board gave Trump’s Justice Department a blueprint for obtaining a criminal search warrant for its Fulton County raid.

The Justice Department, using a grand jury, also demanded details about thousands of election workers who assisted Fulton County in the 2020 vote-counting. Those investigations are ongoing.

In a recent interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes,” Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon defended the Trump administration’s election related investigation.

Dhillon said that “absent some shocking contingency that is unexpected, there should be no interruption in the usual course of counting and certifying the results in the states.”

At the center of the dispute is a fundamental question that is likely to persist beyond November: How much authority should the State Election Board wield compared with the independently elected secretary of state? And will DOJ try to insert itself?

The board has five voting members: a chairman appointed by the governor; one member appointed by the state Senate; one member appointed by the state House; and two members selected by state political parties, one Democrat and one Republican.

Since Mills was appointed to the executive director job in 2025, he has repeatedly clashed with the board’s chairman, John Fervier.

Fervier, a vice president of risk management at Waffle House, was appointed by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp in 2024, but often finds himself voting alongside Ghazal, the board’s lone Democrat.

The latest controversy comes as Georgia voters prepare to elect a new secretary of state, who will inherit responsibility for managing elections and navigating the increasingly tense relationship with the election board.

Democrat Penny Brown Reynolds, a former Fulton County judge who also served in a federal civil rights role during the Biden administration, says the state’s elections have become a target of politically motivated attacks.

“This is the state of Congressman John Lewis and Martin Luther King Jr. and so many of our civil rights leaders who marched and protested and died for the right to vote,” Reynolds told CNN. She said many of the current disputes are driven by “fear tactics” that are “built on fear and confusion.”

Her Republican opponent, state Rep. Tim Fleming, is a former deputy secretary of state and chief of staff to Kemp. Fleming has campaigned heavily on his experience managing state government operations and argues he is best positioned to succeed Raffensperger. Fleming did not respond to CNN’s requests for an interview.

The Republican has championed voter ID requirements, hand-marked paper ballots and other election-integrity measures.

Reynolds said she supports continuing Georgia’s use of voting machines while also exploring broader use of hand-marked paper ballots. If elected, she pledged to defend voting rights against what she describes as ongoing efforts to undermine public confidence in elections.

“What Raffensperger did in standing up with regard to that telephone call and standing up to the unfounded claims that somehow the election was not free, fair, and secure, and legal … because he would not do the bidding of his Republican colleagues, they retaliated,” Reynolds told CNN.

And if she wins her race, “I’ll have my hands full,” she said.

    2026-10-21T16:00:44.858Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/21/politics/state-department-latin-america-cities

Exclusive: State Department warns Americans about Latin America. Privately, it tells asylum officers a different story

    2026-10-21T16:00:44.858Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/21/politics/state-department-latin-america-cities

The State Department is publicly warning Americans about violent crime in parts of Latin America, but privately, it has given asylum officers new assessments arguing that conditions in some of those same countries are no more dangerous than in some US cities, according to internal documents reviewed by CNN.

The documents, which have not been previously reported, focus on Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. Rather than emphasizing human rights issues and the prevalence of kidnapping and extortion often highlighted in State Department assessments, they instead compare violent-crime rates in those countries favorably with US cities such as Baltimore, Houston and Memphis.

The new assessments are part of a broader Trump administration effort to overhaul the way claims from migrants are assessed by asylum officers — and limit who’s eligible to remain in the United States.

Asylum applicants must prove they are unable or unwilling to return to their home country because of a “well-founded fear” of persecution. By lowering the perceived threats in those countries, the new assessments will likely bear directly on those claims, including determinations of whether migrants can safely relocate inside their own country rather than seeking to stay in the US.

“There’s been an oversimplification of real dangers in these countries during other administrations, but this seems to be going too far in the other direction,” said Andrew Selee, president of the Migration Policy Institute, a nonpartisan thinktank.

The State Department says the assessments were prepared by personnel with regional expertise and circulated for review, including to US missions overseas. They are “intended to provide background for adjudicators as they evaluate protection claims,” one document states.

The Department of Homeland Security, which manages asylum claims, referred CNN’s questions about the country reports to the State Department.

In a written statement to CNN, a State Department spokesman said the department “may provide information about conditions in foreign countries to (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) and immigration courts. Such information is intended to provide useful background for USCIS personnel and immigration judges.”

The new documents were distributed to US Citizenship and Immigration Services, the agency inside DHS that processes immigration benefits, and state that violent crime in Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador is lower than in some major US cities. In Mexico and El Salvador, for example, the documents claim that many areas “have violent crime rates at least one order of magnitude lower than those of major US cities.”

Asylum officers generally rely on the State Department’s annual human rights report to assess conditions in an applicant’s home country. That report, which covers the prior year and is usually released in March or April, has been delayed this year. The new assessments therefore give officers more recent country conditions to consider when reviewing claims.

Asylum denials are already high. In June, for example, 94% of asylum cases were denied, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University. That’s a dramatic increase from two years ago when the asylum denial rate hovered around 50%.

The documents show how the Trump administration is using comparisons with the US to evaluate two questions that can determine an asylum claim: whether a home government can provide protection and whether an applicant could safely relocate within the country.

“When you see a government report differ so much from previous reports, it raises red flags, especially if conditions on the ground haven’t changed in a noticeable way that would warrant that,” Selee said. “Some change is OK. You can correct the emphasis in prior reports, but this seems like a wholesale shift in conditions on the ground.”

The State Department warns against travel to Honduras, citing violent crime and terrorism, according to an alert on its website. It specifically cites Gracias a Dios Department, a region in Honduras, for its crime.

The State Department’s public travel warning cites crime in the region. The internal documents, however, say violent-crime rates there and in other Honduran cities “compare favorably with rates of violent crime in parts of the United States,” including Baltimore, Houston and Memphis.

“Of course, these figures do not represent the entirety of the United States,” the document states in one part. “Rather, they demonstrate that, even in developed countries, conditions vary. Further, they demonstrate why a general judgement cannot be made concerning a country’s conditions based on conditions in certain areas.”

The documents also assert that police in Honduras are “willing to and able to respond to requests for assistance from residents, with the main constraints being vehicle storages, response-time challenges, and uneven rural access.” That, too, it states can happen in the United States.

But the realities on the ground are more complicated, Selee said.

“That clearly understates the degree to which police forces are in collusion with organized crime groups,” Selee said. “The difference with the United States is that often people face violence but no trustworthy institutions that can protect them.”

The new documents state that people can move freely in each of the countries. That includes victims of abuse and extortion. While experts say that may be the case, they note that some organized crime groups can pose a threat across the country, meaning that even by relocating, people remain in potential danger.

“The reality is that there are some people who fall afoul of criminal groups and cannot be safe anywhere in the country,” Selee said.

Former USCIS officials said that determining whether someone can relocate in country has been part of the regular line of questioning by asylum officers.

“The question of whether you can relocate in your own country has always been something an officer can and should consider,” a former USCIS official told CNN.

Trump officials have repeatedly said that travel warnings, which are separate from the State Department’s human rights reports, are intended for US citizens and not nationals of that country.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, speaking to CNN’s Jake Tapper in June, defended the administration’s policies when asked about the safety of Haiti, which also has a travel warning.

“We have ‘Do not travel’ in places in Mexico or advisory warnings. In fact, if you go through our website in the State Department, you’ll see there’s advisories to a lot of places that are vacation destinations that we have advisories on because of the real risk to Americans,” said Mullin.

“That doesn’t mean it’s a risk to people who live there,” he added.

FIRST ON FOX: With the midterms less than two weeks away and after socialist-backed candidates notched sweeping primary victories, a conservative group is warning the far-left agenda will leave Americans worse off.

Advancing American Freedom (AAF) launched “DSA Exposed” on Wednesday. First obtained by Fox News Digital, the website critiques 12 Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) proposals, including universal healthcare, public ownership of major industries, abolishing the Senate and ICE and ending aid to Israel.

AAF argues the proposals would reshape American life — and not for the better. Its site examines their potential effects on healthcare, work, housing and the economy.

“In many ways, this election is being framed as a referendum on President Trump, but the Democrats deserve just as much scrutiny and more because of what motivates their actual policy preferences,” AAF President Tim Chapman told Fox News Digital.

REPUBLICANS JUST GOT A POWERFUL NEW PLAYBOOK FOR THE BATTLE FOR CONGRESS. HERE’S WHAT’S INSIDE.

Members of the Democratic Socialists of America gather outside a Trump-owned building on May Day, May 1, 2019, in New York City.(Getty Images)

In a letter sent to congressional offices Wednesday outlining the new tool, Chapman called the DSA’s agenda “un-American extremism” and urged lawmakers to condemn its “antisemitic rhetoric.”

“The DSA represents one of the greatest threats to Americans’ life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness in perhaps American history,” he wrote.

The website also lays out a visual timeline of socialist governments dating back to the 1900s. From the Soviet Union to present-day Cuba, the timeline shows whether each government remained in power or ultimately collapsed.

Chapman said the DSA’s biggest issue is its call for greater government involvement. He argued this could have the opposite effect on affordability than intended.

“They’re going to put more bureaucrats in charge of the economy and this is the thing that’s actually dragging down the economy,” he said.

SOCIALISTS LAUNCH RADICAL PLATFORM TO ABOLISH THE US SENATE

Santiago/Getty Images)

Socialism has become increasingly embedded in American politics after several candidates backed by the DSA prevailed in their Democratic primaries this year.

Some of the DSA’s most prominent endorsements include Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., New York Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, U.S. House candidate for New York Darializa Avila Chevalier and Pennsylvania state Rep. Chris Rabb.

The DSA’s upward momentum has left many Democrats questioning the future of the party and whether it could shift further to the left.

An October Fox News Poll found 32% of voters view socialism favorably, up five points from a year ago, while a March poll found 53% of voters under 30 favored moving away from capitalism toward socialism.

Chapman said “a pendulum swing” has left young Americans with “great frustration” over both parties’ handling of the economy.

“Right now, you’re having populist politics on the right, and you’re having populist on the left and both are massively failing when it comes to the economy,” he said.

YOUNG SWING-STATE VOTERS COZY UP TO DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISTS, SAY PARTY ESTABLISHMENT MUST ‘LEARN’ FROM DSA WINS

He said both parties need to do better to prevent an “opening” for socialism and accused Democratic leaders of being hesitant to distance themselves from DSA-aligned policies for fear of losing their party’s base.

“The answer is not to give the authority to the democratic socialists on the left, because they’ll actually drive it further into the hole,” he said.

As voters head to the polls in November, Chapman hopes the website offers a “deep dive” into socialist platforms and how they stack up against Americans’ priorities.

“Even though they may be a minority of the party, they are the energy within the party,” Chapman said. “They’re the beating heart of the movement and I think that the leadership of the party will probably kowtow to that base energy.”

Thune makes bold prediction about Republicans’ Senate chances as GOP pulls millions from key races

    October 21, 2026 10:25am EDT / Fox News

The Senate majority leader acknowledged headwinds in North Carolina, Georgia and Kansas as campaign cash shifts

    By Alex Miller

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said that he’s not turning his back and cutting bait on any of the several tight races across the map, but shifting money and worsening polls show that some contests might not be salvageable.

FREMONT, Neb. — Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., is predicting Republicans will outperform the polls and retain their narrow Senate majority, even as GOP-aligned groups pull millions of dollars from struggling candidates and redirect resources to races that have suddenly become more competitive.

Thune has been crisscrossing the country campaigning for vulnerable Republicans ahead of the Nov. 3 election. He’s confident that they can hold onto their slim, 53-to-47-seat majority in the Senate but acknowledges that the GOP as a whole faces headwinds.

And as Election Day inches closer and closer, several contests across the country have tightened, like in Kansas, while others may be slipping away from Republicans, like in North Carolina or Georgia.

DEMOCRATS THINK A BLUE WAVE IS BUILDING. HERE ARE 3 FORCES THAT COULD STOP IT

Thune, in an interview with Fox News Digital on the trail supporting Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., was still optimistic about the GOP’s chances.

“I think there are a lot of races right now just looking at the polling that are up for grabs,” Thune said. “I mean you could call them jump balls, however you want to say it. They’re margin of error races, and there are some that are maybe a little out of the margin. But I do think the polling right now, like it has been in past elections, under-reflects the Republican vote.”

“And I think you’ll see some of that. So we’re not giving up on any of them,” he continued.

Republicans are hoping to defend six toss-up races this cycle, according to Cook Political Report. And several that earlier appeared as safe bets, like Mississippi and South Carolina, have recently shifted more favorably towards Democrats.

12 RACES SCRAMBLE SENATE BATTLEFIELD AS DEMOCRATS EYE COMEBACK

The flow of campaign cash has been staggering during this midterm cycle, with Republican political action committees (PACs) and outside groups dumping hundreds of millions of dollars in key races across the country.

But where the money is being shifted could be more telling.

Earlier this month, the Senate Leadership Fund, a PAC closely aligned with Thune, moved money from Georgia to Kansas, where Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., is locked in one of the more unexpected toss-up contests of the cycle.

The Senate Leadership Fund had initially pledged $44 million to bolster Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., in his quest to topple Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga. But the incumbent first-term senator has been raking in campaign donations and consistently led Collins in polling.

DEMOCRATS SEE NEW CHANCES TO FLIP RED STATES — BUT A $400M GOP SPENDING ADVANTAGE COULD DERAIL THEIR PLANS

President Donald Trump arrives to speak during a campaign rally at Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center in Wasilla, Alaska, on Oct. 13, 2026.(Kent NISHIMURA / AFP via Getty Images)

And in North Carolina, where former Republican National Committee (RNC) co-chair Michael Whatley is running to keep retiring Sen. Thom Tillis’ seat red against former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, outside funding has begun to dissipate.

The Senate Leadership Fund similarly pulled back nearly all of its spending in the state earlier this month, a sign that confidence in Whatley’s ability to best Cooper was waning. Even President Donald Trump, who held a rally for Whatley on Tuesday, is worried about the race.

“I think he’s a great man, and I am worried about him,” Trump told reporters earlier this month. “I hope he wins. He was a great leader for the whole Republican Party when I won, and he’d be a great senator.”

Meanwhile, Thune was still bullish that Republicans could hold on, but ultimately, it would come down to getting the “low propensity, particularly Trump, voters out, and then you’ve got to work on winning the middle of the electorate.”

“Turnout’s going to be a big part of whether or not we’re successful or not. And in every state I’ve been in, that is a clear-eyed focus of our candidates,” Thune said.

“That’s where resources are being invested. And I think that could be the difference for us come Election Day on whether or not we win a lot of these close races or not,” he continued. “And I think that we’re gonna outperform the polls for sure come Election Day.”
