President Donald Trump kicked off the Great American State Fair Wednesday evening by touting America’s success under his leadership and likening his political movement to the American Revolution during remarks on the National Mall.

“Just like those patriots of 1776, over the past 17 months, we have taken power back from the far off political class,” Trump told a crowd gathered in the nation’s capital for the opening ceremony. “They’re trying to gain it back, but it’s not going to happen. We have reclaimed our sovereignty, regained our liberty, restored our prosperity, and we have saved our country in all things. We are once again putting a thing called America first.”

Trump walked out to Lee Greenwood performing “God Bless the U.S.A.” as part of the opening ceremony for celebrations surrounding the nation’s 250th anniversary. The president’s remarks were preceded by military flyovers, including B-2 bombers and F-35 stealth fighter jets, as well as comments from Trump Cabinet members and music from the U.S. Marine Band.

Trump used his remarks to tout improvements to the nation’s capital, saying homeless encampments and graffiti had been removed, more than 50 monuments and memorials had been repaired and beautified, and dozens of statues had been cleaned since he returned to office. Trump also pointed to repairs at Union Station, Meridian Hill Park, Lafayette Square and the Reflecting Pool, which he said had been “gruesomely vandalized by thugs.”

“The vandals got to it,” Trump said of the Reflecting Pool. “They’ve largely been caught and are being prosecuted. We can’t let that happen to our country.”

Trump previewed several anniversary-related projects as well, including what he described as a new White House ballroom, a “triumphal arc” near Arlington Cemetery, the National Garden of American Heroes in West Potomac Park and a “Spirit of ’76” exhibition at Freedom Plaza honoring figures from the American Revolution.

Trump framed the nation’s 250th birthday as both a celebration of America’s founding and a launchpad for what he called a new “golden age of America.”

“This anniversary is a time to be proud of our past,” Trump said. “But it is also a time to lift our sights, expand our ambitions, and raise our expectations of what America can be.”

“With all of that being said, the best is yet to come,” he added.

The president was joined at the event by House Speaker Mike Johnson, several Cabinet officials and administration figures, and what Trump described as “countless” members of Congress. Trump called the opening ceremony “a very special night.”

“It’s my honor to officially kick off the celebration with the Great American State Fair,” Trump said. “It’s going to be great. It’s going to be unbelievable.”

Trump said the fair, which runs from Wednesday through July 10, will showcase all 50 states and six U.S. territories and include military flyovers, patriotic music, high-tech demonstrations, exhibitions, a FIFA fan zone and an “old fashioned rodeo.”

“You get just a little, little tiny glimpse of it tonight,” Trump said after the flyovers. “How good is our Air Force?”

Trump also previewed what he said would be a massive Fourth of July celebration on the National Mall, telling supporters he would return to speak as the country rings in its 250th year with “the largest fireworks display in world history.” He also pointed to additional anniversary events, including the Patriot Games, a competition featuring top high school athletes, and a Freedom 250 Grand Prix race around the Capitol and down Pennsylvania Avenue.

Trump closed by casting the anniversary as a celebration of the generations of Americans who built and defended the country, invoking the Founding Fathers, Patrick Henry, the Revolutionary War, the settling of the West, the building of railroads and skyscrapers, two world wars and the space race.

“This is our heritage. This is our history, and this is the destiny of America to be the greatest, most incredible country ever to grace the earth,” Trump said. “We are one people, one nation, marching into one magnificent future under our great American flag.”

    “Happy birthday, America,” he added.

Senate rejects measure to restrict Trump’s Iran war powers as key Republicans shift votes

    June 24, 2026 / 11:25 PM EDT / CBS News

The Senate late Wednesday rejected a measure aimed at restricting President Trump’s power to wage war against Iran, in a victory for the president and Senate GOP leadership as they seek to quell congressional discontent with the Trump administration’s Iran strategy.

The procedural motion failed in a 50 to 47 vote, with two Republicans — Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski — voting in favor of advancing the resolution by Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine, siding with most Democrats. Republican Sen. Rand Paul voted present, and Democratic Sen. John Fetterman voted no.

Just one day earlier, four Republicans voted yes on a separate House-passed resolution to restrict Mr. Trump’s war powers, allowing it to narrowly pass. Those same four GOP lawmakers had voted to advance the Kaine resolution in an earlier procedural vote last month — the first time an Iran war powers resolution had moved forward in the Senate after seven failed attempts.

Kaine’s resolution would have directed Mr. Trump to “remove the United States Armed Forces from hostilities within or against Iran,” unless authorized by Congress. It would have required the president’s signature if it had passed the House and Senate, unlike Tuesday’s resolution, which will not go to the president’s desk.

The Kaine resolution’s practical impact was unclear since the president would likely have vetoed the measure even if it passed. The Trump administration has also argued the U.S. is no longer engaged in hostilities with Iran since the two sides entered into a ceasefire. And the administration has said it believes the 1973 War Powers Resolution — the law that set up a process for Congress to push back on presidential uses of military force — is itself unconstitutional.

Still, Mr. Trump has publicly and privately vented about the war powers votes, arguing the rebukes from Congress have undermined his efforts to negotiate with Iran.

Those frustrations boiled over earlier Wednesday, when Mr. Trump expressed his discontent during a testy lunch meeting with Senate Republicans, CBS News previously reported. At one point, the president sternly told Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana — who had voted in favor of Tuesday’s war powers resolution — to sit down. Cassidy told reporters after the meeting that “[Mr. Trump] raised his voice” and “I lost my temper.”

Later in the day, however, signs emerged that some of the Senate Republicans who had previously voted to constrain Mr. Trump’s war powers were reconsidering.

Cassidy was briefed on Iran at the White House by Vice President JD Vance and special envoy Steve Witkoff, the senator confirmed on X, writing that the conversation “address[ed] many of my concerns.” Cassidy voted against advancing the resolution Wednesday night.

And Paul voted present on Wednesday, despite voting in favor of the last several Iran war powers resolutions. He said on X his goal was to “give the President more space and leverage to negotiate a lasting peace.”

“My opinion on the debate over war and executive power has not changed and I have voted that way several times,” he said. “But since hostilities seem to be over and the President asked me to give consideration to his negotiating position, I will do so.”

Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, a Wyoming Republican, helped “seal the deal” in conversations with some key GOP members, a person familiar with the matter told CBS News.

The back and forth comes after Mr. Trump signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran to extend the two countries’ ceasefire for 60 days and launch talks on Iran’s nuclear program, aiming to wrap up a war that polling shows most Americans do not believe was worth the cost.

WASHINGTON, June 24 (Reuters) – The White House asked Congress on Wednesday for $1 billion to boost the pensions of workers at former General Motors auto parts unit Delphi that were cut during the Detroit automaker’s 2009 bankruptcy restructuring.

The White House is also seeking $1 billion to help reconstruct New York’s Penn Station and $500 million to support ongoing construction projects at Washington’s World War II memorial and the Tidal Basin as part of a supplemental funding request.

The White House also wants Congress to let the Federal Aviation Administration reallocate any remaining funds in the $12.5 billion air traffic control modernization effort approved last year to any specific priority — rather than the air traffic spending plans set by Congress last year.

The Delphi cuts affected just over 20,000 salaried retirees, including about 5,000 in Ohio. Some experienced pension reductions of up to 70%, and lawmakers have been pushing for years to restore the cuts.

As part of the 2009 $50 billion government auto bailout of GM during the Obama administration, the automaker agreed to assume the liabilities from hourly Delphi employees, but the pensions of salaried workers were turned over to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.

    GM declined to comment.

Last month, the Transportation Department said it is providing another $200 million to begin construction by the end of next year on an $8 billion plan to rebuild Penn Station, a key transit artery.

U.S. passenger railroad company Amtrak said the plan includes expanding track capacity, building a grand entrance on Eighth Avenue to a new train hall and replacing aging walkways with open modern concourses. Penn Station is the busiest transit hub in the U.S., serving 10 million Amtrak passengers annually and 100 million total including regional train systems.

The announcement means New York will not opt to move Madison Square Garden, which sits on top of Penn Station and is home to the New York Knicks basketball team, the New York Rangers hockey team, various other sporting events, concerts and shows.

Trump White House asks Congress to approve year-round E15 gasoline sales

    • Summary
    • The House narrowly approved year-round E15 sales earlier this year
    • The measure faces long odds in the Senate, where major bills typically need 60 votes
    • A White House-backed spending bill could provide a new path to passage

June 24 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s White House asked Congress on Wednesday to pass a law allowing year-round sales of gasoline containing higher volumes of ethanol, reviving a long-sought priority of the biofuels industry.

While Trump has long backed year-round sales of gasoline blended with 15% ethanol, the decision marks the first formal push by his White House to enact the policy and signals a willingness to challenge U.S. refiners that have opposed the measure over concerns it could raise costs and complicate fuel distribution.

The effort also marks the White House’s latest attempt to curb gasoline prices that have risen since the joint U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran in late FebruaryIran, with supporters arguing the higher-ethanol blend provides motorists with a cheaper alternative to conventional gasoline.

In a supplemental bill released on Wednesday, the White House Office of Management and Budget asked Congress to address the “urgent and needed fix that codifies the permanent, year-round sale of E-15.”

Gasoline containing 10% ethanol can already be ‌sold year-round, but sales of the 15% blend, known as E15, have been restricted during the summer because the fuel evaporates more readily in hot weather and can contribute to smog.

Legislation allowing year-round sales of E15 gasoline had narrowly cleared the House of Representatives earlier this year, handing a victory to ethanol producers and farm-state lawmakers who have pushed for the change for years.

But the proposal faces a steeper climb in the Senate, where major legislation generally requires 60 votes to overcome procedural hurdles.

With the chamber closely divided and some lawmakers aligned with refining interests opposed to the measure, supporters have struggled to assemble the bipartisan coalition needed for passage.

As of Wednesday morning, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.93, and has been falling since the United States and Iran agreed to cease hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping artery for global oil and gas supply.

WASHINGTON, June 24 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday asked Congress to approve more than $11 billion in additional aid for farmers facing high fuel and fertilizer costs since the Iran war, according to a White ‌House supplemental funding request reviewed by Reuters.

The new funding would add to $12 billion in aid the administration has already disbursed to farmers this year, as the industry sags under high production costs and low crop prices, made worse by Trump’s current trade policies and the war with Iran.

Farm and industry groups have said that money was key to helping farmers prepare for spring planting, but insufficient to make them whole.

Fuel and fertilizer prices have jumped this spring due to shipping disruptions from the Middle East, though flows have improved since Washington and Tehran hashed out an initial plan earlier this month to end the conflict.

Farmers are a loyal voting bloc for Trump, whose Republican Party will defend slim majorities in Congress in November’s midterms.

Trump’s approval rating among rural Americans fell in June to a new low of 50%, ‌down from 60% in February 2025, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling.

According to the funding request signed by Russ Vought, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, $10 billion of the new aid would be allocated to row and specialty crop farmers for crops planted in 2026.

The remaining $1.1 billion would be allocated to Florida farmers affected by winter storms in late 2025 and early 2026.

If the White House request is approved, the administration would be forecast to send about $55.4 billion in direct payments to farmers this year, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data.

That would comprise roughly 33% of total farm income in 2026, the highest level in direct payments since 2001, according to Wesley Davis, a partner at Meridian Agribusiness Advisors, an agricultural economics consultancy.
