High energy costs from Iran war heighten pressure on struggling Louisiana farmers: “It’s a game of survival”

    July 11, 2026 5:03 PM EDT / CBS News

COLUMBIA, Louisiana — In northeast Louisiana, agriculture pilot Reed Keahey flies with sticker shock.

His plane needs kerosene-based Jet-A fuel, the price of which has soared during the Iran war. A gallon that cost $2.46 in February, just before the war broke out, peaked at $4.11 in May.

Keahey buys 7,500 gallons at a time. He said that when fuel hit $4.11, he spent a little more than $30,000 on one round of fuel.

As of this week, it cost $3.18, but was rising again.

“It puts a squeeze, but I can’t let my farmers feel that squeeze that it’s putting on me,” Keahey told CBS News.

With these fuel prices, the agricultural community in Louisiana feels there is little margin for error.

David and Theresa Guererro own a farming business. Their corn crops need a nitrogen fertilizer called urea, and nearly half of global urea exports originate in the Persian Gulf, which has experienced a major shipping crisis due to the intermittent closures of the Strait of Hormuz during the war. The critical passageway also handles about 20% of the world’s oil.

Prices of urea spiked during the war, completely draining the Guererros’ fertilizer budget.

The Guererros disclosed they are currently overbudget on urea by about $120,000 to $130,000.

“It’s close, it’s real close,” David Guererro responded when asked if their farm will survive the cost hikes.

According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, last year U.S. farm bankruptcies saw a 46% increase from 2024.

Keahey, meanwhile, could charge Guererro more to treat his crops. Instead, he’s taking the hit.

“Right now, it’s a game of survival,” Keahey said. “… If the farmers aren’t in business, then I’m not in business.”

Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., claims to have been detained by Israeli settlers armed with U.S.-made firearms while visiting the West Bank.

Khanna and his team were surrounded by a group of West Bank settlers near the Palestinian village of Khirbet Zanuta on Wednesday, his office told The New York Times. The settlers were armed with American-made M4 machine guns, Khanna’s office said.

When soldiers from the Israeli Defense Forces arrived, Khanna claimed they sided with the settlers. The situation only defused after Israeli police officers arrived and dispersed the settlers and their vehicles blocking the U.S. congressional group’s path, according to the Democrat’s office.

“If they will do this to an American congressman, imagine what is happening to Palestinian families who are just trying to live,” Rep Khanna told Fox News Digital in a statement.

“I am grateful to David Brownstein of the American embassy for helping rescue us. I expect Israel will prosecute the violent settlers and IDF soldiers who detained American citizens,” Rep. Khanna said.

The Times first reported details of the alleged incident on Saturday.

Reached by Fox News Digital, a representative for Khanna’s team said she could confirm the details reported by the Times. Khanna also spoke to Reuters about what allegedly transpired.

“I’m certainly probably the first American politician who’s been detained by the IDF and Israeli settlers,” Khanna said in a Reuters video.

“We were at a village that Israeli settlers had destroyed,” Khanna said. “And these hoodlums come in with machine guns, an M4, an American-made machine gun, and they detain us. They block off the road, and then they call the IDF and the IDF is on their side, not on the side of the Americans.”

Khanna, a frequent critic of Israel and potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, claimed the incident reframed his thinking on a potential White House run.

“I’m strongly considering it,” he told Reuters on camera of a potential U.S. presidential run, “and I’m more resolved to consider it after this trip. We need a new moral direction in our party. A new moral vision that respects the dignity and human rights of people around the world.”

Khanna added to the Times, “No American would support this if they knew the details of what was going on here.”

The Israeli military told Reuters that troops and police officers intervened after receiving a report of settlers blocking vehicles near the village of Khirbet Zanuta.

Dave Portnoy explains why he wants “Barstool Sports” to be like “Saturday Night Live”

    July 11, 2026 / 12:28 PM EDT / CBS News

Dave Portnoy has built a business empire on his viral pizza reviews and brash social media personality. Now, the “Barstool Sports” creator is looking back on his journey to the top in his new memoir, “Cancel Me If You Can.”

Long before he started ranking pizzas across the country, Portnoy decided to quit a sales job he hated and start his own media enterprise. That project was the early iteration of “Barstool Sports.” At the time, the publication was a four-page sports newspaper, which Portnoy passed out for free.

“I didn’t care if I was working, you know, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; it was better than doing what I was doing,” Portnoy told CBS Saturday Morning. “Every day, I felt like we were making tiny steps. They may be (a) reader one day, and we went to two the next.”

The goal of “Barstool Sports,” then and now, is to “be honest and authentic to readers,” Portnoy said. To build the company that did that, Portnoy hired talented people and let them run wild. One of those hires was Alex Cooper, who would go on to create the hit podcast “Call Her Daddy.”

Portnoy said he wanted “Barstool Sports” to be like “Saturday Night Live” — a place where great talent could be established and developed.

Dave Portnoy, attends a WNBA game on July 15, 2025, at TD Garden in Boston, MA. Erica Denhoff/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

“I wanted young comedians, talent, to apply to Barstool, and then hopefully they become superstars and some of them may leave,” Portnoy said. So we sign you for a contract and the hope is that you explode and get big, and we monetize you during that time and then at the end of that contract, we can either re-sign you if we can afford you … or you can go to great success.”

“Barstool Sports” is now more than just a publication. The Barstool Fund, started in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, helped over 400 businesses pay their bills and keep their doors open.

Portnoy has also begun to dip his toes into the political waters. He openly considered running for mayor in New York City, and has endorsed politicians, including current President Trump. He told “CBS Saturday Morning” that he sees engaging in politics as a “civic duty.”

“I actually am like, up at night on some of the things that’s going on in politics,” Portnoy said. “That’s what would drive me to do it.”

He wants readers to know that “Cancel Me If You Can” isn’t him asking to be understood.

“I don’t think I’m ever going to be understood by people who don’t like me. I’ve kind of come to that conclusion,” Portnoy said. “People like me will always like me. People who don’t, won’t. I could give somebody who hates my guts like $100 for free and they’d want $200.”

Though he appreciated the chance to create “a record” of the founding of “Barstool Sports,” Portnoy said he doesn’t plan on writing another book.

“When this was pitched to me, the idea of seeing my book, like in an airport walking by, I was like, ‘That’s really cool,’” Portnoy said. “I’m super happy it’s over, and I’m glad I did it, but I would never do it again.”

Trump-aligned House holdouts accused of holding ‘life-saving’ veterans bill ‘hostage’ over SAVE America Act

    July 11, 2026 3:27pm EDT / Fox News

Concerned Veterans for America warns 23 remaining legislative days leave little room for further delays

    By Elaine Mallon Fox News

As Congress returns, Concerned Veterans for America and Chairman Mike Bost are pressing lawmakers to move the legislation forward, saying veterans should not have to wait for expanded care and benefits.

A sweeping veterans package supporters describe as the largest expansion of veterans’ health care and benefits in more than a decade is expected to return to the House floor when lawmakers come back from the July recess, but backers warn the legislation could once again become collateral damage in the Republican standoff over the SAVE America Act.

The Take Care of America’s Veterans Act rolls roughly 60 veterans bills into a package that would dramatically expand veterans’ health care and benefits. At its core, the legislation would cement veterans’ access to community care outside the VA while increasing benefits for combat-wounded veterans, caregivers and Gold Star families, expanding mental health services and enacting dozens of additional reforms.

House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Mike Bost, R-Ill., told Fox News Digital he intends to bring the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act back for a vote as soon as the House reconvenes next week.

HOUSE CONSERVATIVES DERAIL GOP AGENDA IN SAVE AMERICA ACT SHOWDOWN

The legislation was held up last month after a group of House Republicans joined Democrats to defeat a procedural vote, stopping the House from taking up the bill.

“I’m feeling good as long as my members stay with us on the rule,” Bost said. “Right now, there’s some politics being played, not about this bill, but just in general.”

The bill became entangled in a broader House Republican fight over the SAVE America Act, legislation championed by President Donald Trump that would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.

On June 30, the House voted on H. Res. 1398, the procedural rule governing floor consideration of several bills, including the National Defense Authorization Act and the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act. The rule failed after 14 Republicans joined Democrats in opposition, preventing the House from taking up the veterans package and bringing floor business to a standstill. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., claimed to have voted against the rules vote in protest against House leadership’s handling of the SAVE America Act. As a result, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson sent the members home early.

Bost accused the holdouts of effectively putting veterans legislation on hold.

‘IT’S A MESS’: GOP TURNS ON HOUSE CONSERVATIVES AS VOTER ID BLOCKADE STALLS TRUMP’S AGENDA

“They’re holding all bills hostage,” Bost said. “They’re not voting for any rule. Any bill that has to pass a rule before it comes to the floor—which this bill does because of its size—can’t move.”

Although Bost said he supports the SAVE America Act and has voted for it three times, he argued the Senate’s failure to act should not stop the House from advancing unrelated legislation.

“I agree with that bill,” Bost said. “But the Senate still has to do their work. We don’t stop our work because the Senate isn’t doing it.”

With 23 legislative days left in the Congressional session, Concerned Veterans for America Strategic Director John Byrnes, a supporter of the bill, said time is of the essence.

“There are lots and lots of things that have to get done,” Byrnes told Fox News Digital. “There’s also the National Defense Authorization Act, which is a must pass every year, so these things eat up time. There’s requirements to have debate on these, which eat up session time.”

Byrnes argued that every procedural delay pushes other legislation further down the calendar.

“This bill will save lives in 2027,” Byrnes said. “If we lose veterans because they could have had faster, better access to health care, we’re never going to get those veterans back.”

    Rep. Mike Bost, R-Ill.()

TRUMP’S SAVE AMERICA ACT SHOWS SIGNS OF LIFE IN THE SENATE DESPITE REPUBLICAN REVOLT

But Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, who also voted no on the procedural vote, told Fox News Digital that he has concerns about how the bill is financed.

“I appreciate what the chairman’s trying to do in some respects, but there’s a few issues,” Roy said.

Among them, Roy pointed to provisions offsetting new spending through changes affecting other veterans.

“You’re taxing certain veterans to provide some sort of benefits and changes to other veterans,” Roy said. “There are concerns about some of the pay-fors.”

Veterans of Foreign Wars has also taken issue with Section 108 of the bill, warning that it would codify changes to future disability ratings for tinnitus and sleep apnea to help finance other veterans priorities.

But Bost said this is inaccurate.

“No veteran is going to have their benefits reduced,” Bost said. “If you’re receiving a benefit right now, that’s not going to be reduced at all.”

Roy, who previously served two years on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, said he supported a lot of what the bill was seeking to accomplish; but said other pieces of legislation are priorities, too.

“There is a block of us for whom border security, the SAVE Act and demonstrating our leadership on major issues is critical,” Roy said. “Some of these other bills may or may not get hung up based on a desire of many in the conference to see movement on other things.”

South African soccer player who competed in the World Cup dies at 25

    July 11, 2026 / 12:11 PM EDT / CBS/AP

South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams, who played at the 2026 World Cup, has died. He was 25.

His death was confirmed by Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s minister of sport, arts and culture, in a statement on Saturday.

“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams, midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, at the age of 25,” McKenzie posted on X.

“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters.”

Adams helped South Africa reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time. He was featured in all three of South Africa’s group stage matches.

The team had never advanced to the knockout phase of a World Cup — even as the host nation in 2010. Fans didn’t have much hope after South Africa lost its opening match to Mexico 2-0. But a draw in the game against the Czech Republic placed the South Africa team in the running.

Adams started South Africa’s first Group A game against the Czech Republic and was substituted at halftime. McKenzie said he played that game only hours after learning that his grandmother had died.

Adams then played in the game against South Korea, in which South Africa scored a goal to advance to the knockout rounds before losing to Canada.

“It’s so incredibly sad to hear that South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after featuring in his nation’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in a statement.

Further details of his death were not given. McKenzie asked the public and the media to “exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation.”

Adams played several seasons for Stellenbosch before joining Mamelodi Sundowns last year. He helped the club win the CAF (African) Champions League this year.

“Death has cruelly stolen one of our own. It has robbed our nation of a remarkable footballer,” the South African Football Players Union posted on X. “We will forever remember his humility, his extraordinary talent and the pride with which he represented South Africa. Rest in eternal peace, Jayden. You will never be forgotten.”

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa and the South African Federation of Trade Unions also expressed their condolences.

A Trump-appointed federal judge on Friday reluctantly dismissed the Jan. 6 prosecution of four Proud Boys members, saying the law left him no authority to block the Justice Department’s request.

U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly granted the Justice Department’s motion to dismiss the case with prejudice against Ethan Nordean, Joseph Biggs, Zachary Rehl and Dominic Pezzola after a federal appeals court had already vacated their convictions.

In a seven-page opinion, Kelly said longstanding separation-of-powers principles leave charging decisions to the executive branch, meaning he could not require the Justice Department to maintain a prosecution it had decided to drop.

DOJ SEEKS TO VACATE JAN 6 CONVICTIONS IN SWEEPING MOVE TIED TO TRUMP ORDER

“Because the decisions to issue the Executive Order and to abandon this prosecution—even after the Government secured convictions for serious crimes relating to the attack on the Capitol on January 6—are solely the Executive’s, no one should mistake the Court’s granting of the Government’s motion for its agreement with those decisions,” Kelly wrote.

Pezzola, who was convicted of assaulting police, robbery and destroying government property, was found guilty of stealing a Capitol Police riot shield before using it to smash a Capitol window, creating what prosecutors said was the first breach point through which hundreds of rioters entered the building. He was acquitted of seditious conspiracy but convicted on multiple other felony counts.

Meanwhile, Nordean, Biggs and Rehl were convicted of seditious conspiracy and several other felonies related to the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, including conspiracy to obstruct Congress’ certification of the 2020 presidential election, obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder and destruction of government property.

FORMER INDIANA REP STEPHEN BUYER RECEIVES FULL PARDON FROM TRUMP FOR 2023 INSIDER TRADING CONVICTION

The Justice Department first moved in April to vacate the convictions and dismiss the case against the four men, arguing that doing so was “in the interests of justice” in light of President Donald Trump’s Jan. 20, 2025, executive order commuting their sentences and issuing full pardons to former Proud Boys Chairman Enrique Tarrio and hundreds of other Jan. 6 defendants. The D.C. Circuit had already erased the men’s convictions before returning the case to Kelly’s courtroom to consider the Justice Department’s request to dismiss the indictment.

“There is little mystery about why the Government is moving to dismiss this case, or whether dismissal is in fact what the Executive seeks,” Kelly wrote. “President Trump’s views about the prosecution of those who attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6—whether those views are based on fact or fiction—are well known, as is his intention to extend clemency to them.”

Kelly cited longstanding precedent holding that charging decisions belong to the executive branch and that judges cannot reject a dismissal simply because they disagree with the government’s reasoning.

LEGAL WAR ON TRUMP’S AGENDA GAINS FIREPOWER AS FEDERAL LAWYERS DEFECT TO DEMOCRATS

And because the convictions had already been vacated and prosecutors have broad authority to decide whether to pursue criminal charges, Kelly said he lacked the power to force the Justice Department to continue the prosecution.

“Indeed, it is hard to see how any course other than granting the motion in full could make practical sense. Denying the motion would not somehow revive the convictions that the Court of Appeals vacated,” Kelly wrote. “Nor would denying it mean a retrial would follow, because the Court lacks the authority to compel the Executive to pursue a prosecution, full stop—but especially when an executive order explicitly requires that the Government seek dismissal with prejudice.”

But Kelly sharply rebuked the actions of the Jan. 6 rioters, calling it an attack on the people, Congress, and the “Constitution’s mechanism to facilitate the peaceful transfer of power.”

“Moving forward, if this Nation’s experiment in self-government is to last another 250 years, the American people—no matter their partisan preferences—will have to act together to preserve, protect and defend that miracle through our constitutional framework,” Kelly wrote.

Tarrio, who was also pardoned for criminal charges stemming from his role in the Jan. 6 riots, celebrated Kelly’s dismissal on X.

“We took the worst they threw at us the raids, the solitary, the lies and we stood tall,” Tarrio wrote. “Trump dropped the pardons and now the rest is crumbling. Justice is SERVED! Proud Boys don’t lose. We WIN. This is OUR victory. THANK YOU PRESIDENT DONALD J TRUMP and all of you that fought for us!”

Apalachee High School shooting suspect set to change plea, court documents show

    July 11, 2026 / 1:14 PM EDT / CBS News

Colt Gray, the teen accused of fatally shooting two students and two teachers in 2024 at Apalachee High School in Georgia, will appear in court for a “non-negotiated” plea hearing later this month, court documents show.

The documents, filed Friday in Barrow County Superior Court in Winder, Georgia, indicate Gray is set to change his plea when the parties are ordered to appear before the court on July 24 for a plea and sentencing hearing.

Gray had been charged as an adult and previously pleaded not guilty. The teen is facing a total of 55 counts, including malice murder, aggravated battery and aggravated assault. He faces up to 30 years in prison for the second-degree murder charges and up to 180 years in total. Gray’s attorneys indicated in late 2025 that he was negotiating a plea deal. The judge then set a deadline.

Gray, who was 14 at the time of the shooting, has remained in custody at a juvenile detention center since his arrest.

His father, Colin Gray, was convicted in March of second-degree murder and all other charges. Gray was the first adult charged in connection with a school shooting in Georgia. His prosecution was the third time a parent has been charged for their connection to a mass shooting allegedly carried out by their child.

Prosecutors said he ignored multiple instances of violence conducted by his son throughout the years. Gray admitted to giving his son the rifle used in the school shooting but told the court he did that in hopes of bonding with his child while hunting and shooting at the gun range.

In September 2024, Gray carried a semiautomatic assault-style rifle onto the school bus, with the barrel sticking out of his book bag, wrapped up in a poster board. He left his second-period class and then emerged from a bathroom with the rifle before shooting people in a classroom and hallways.

He allegedly left a notebook with handwritten instructions detailing the steps to prepare for the violence and a diagram of his classroom.
