Afghan woman in Texas dubbed an “alien terrorist” is deported in DOJ’s first case using obscure court

    September 11, 2026 / 11:17 AM EDT / CBS News

Washington— An Afghan permanent resident living in Texas has been deported after the Justice Department accused her of being an “alien terrorist,” in the first such case of its kind, the department announced on Friday.

Nazira Haji Zada, 47, opted to leave the United States rather than continue litigating the case in the Alien Terrorist Removal Court, the department said.

The Alien Terrorist Removal Court was first created in 1996 to allow the government to deport noncitizens who could not be removed by the traditional legal process because the information about their cases was classified and could not be made public for national security reasons.

Public defenders representing Haji Zada had initially indicated she intended to fight the government’s efforts to deport her, saying the court’s secretive rules violated her due process rights.

The targets of the court’s noncitizen terrorist removal proceedings — including legal permanent residents — are not permitted to review the classified evidence against them. And unlike criminal proceedings, targets are barred from legally challenging how the evidence was collected by the government.

Haji Zada has never been charged with a crime. However, her son, Abdullah Haji Zada, and son-in-law, Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, were both prosecuted and convicted over a plot to commit an ISIS-inspired mass shooting on Election Day in 2024.

The Justice Department has alleged that Haji Zada supported their plans and worked to try to radicalize her children to support ISIS.

The Justice Department said on Friday that it had shared half a terabyte of documents with her lawyers in support of its evidence that she is an alien terrorist. Haji Zada “conceded that she is an alien terrorist and waived appeal of the removal order, terminating her previous status,” the department said in a press release.

“This landmark case, resulting in the prompt removal of this alien terrorist to her country of origin, is a win for national security and the rule of law,” Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement. “Those who support and condone terrorism should not be living in the United States, and this first-ever case before the ATRC shows how the Department will use every tool at its disposal to protect our country.”

DALLAS, Texas – Facing a brutal political environment as the GOP fights to hold control of Congress, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance used their speeches on the concluding night of the first ever Republican midterm convention to paint clear contrasts with Democrats and energize supporters to vote.

With less than two months until the midterm elections— and early voting kicking off in a couple of weeks — Trump showcased his policy wins since returning to the White House and led the crowd at American Airlines Center in Dallas in an oath to vote as he made his second primetime convention appearance in two nights.

“You know what happens if you don’t vote? You go to hell,” the president warned.

Vance, in a strikingly partisan keynote address, charged that the Democratic Party is the “party of hatred.” And with the next race for the White House kicking off once the midterms are over, Vance, the likely heir apparent for the term-limited Trump, was showered with chants of “48” – as in the 48th president – as he delivered his address.

The speeches by Vance and Trump capped a day that included appearances by some of the other major figures in the GOP, and the party pulled out all the stops to boost morale in the stretch run to the midterms.

Here are the top takeaways from night two of the midterm convention.

    Trump’s pledge

Facing an energized Democratic Party heading into the midterms, the main mission of the Republican convention was to motivate the GOP’s MAGA base, which has a history of sitting it out when Trump isn’t on the ballot, to vote this autumn.

Trump reiterated on Thursday evening that his supporters needed to “do me the biggest favor you’ve ever done… You’ve got to do this for me. You’ve got to pretend I’m on the ticket.”

The president then led the crowd in a pledge.

[FOX NEWS UPDATES FROM THE MIDTERM CONVENTION]

“I pledge to the greatest president in the history of America,” Trump said as many in the arena repeated his words.

“I am going to go out, and I’m going to get my friends, my family, and we are going to vote on November 3rd, or we are going to vote before that,” Trump continued before warning that if they didn’t cast a ballot, they’d “go to hell.”

    Trump’s unusual pitch

The president repeated his offer to Americans that he announced a night earlier, what he on Thursday described as the “Trump dividend.”

On Wednesday, Trump pledged a $5,000 dividend for every adult U.S. citizen if Republicans retain control of the House and Senate in the midterms.

“We can do that because our country has never done better. We’re taking in trillions, trillions of dollars,” the president argued.

Trump also showcased his second term achievements, claiming that “in 19 months, I’ve delivered on every single promise I made.”

[DEMOCRACY ’26: STAY UP TO DATE WITH THE FOX NEWS ELECTION HUB]

“We delivered the largest tax cuts in American history, the largest regulation cuts in American history, the largest investment in our military in the history of our country, and made America the energy and military superpower of the world,” the president proclaimed.

Trump and Republicans are banking that their litany of political wins can rebuff traditional headwinds – the party in power traditionally loses congressional seats in the midterms. The GOP is also battling a rough environment fueled by persistent inflation, a new surge in gas and diesel prices due to a flare-up in the ongoing war with Iran, and a deepening trade war with neighboring Canada.

While Trump touted “tremendous economic success,” public opinion polls paint a very different picture, with the president’s overall approval rating, and especially his handling of the economy, well into negative territory.

Inflation was a key issue that helped boost Trump and the GOP to sweeping election victories in 2024, but Democrats say affordability has been the issue that fueled their ballot box victories and overperformances since Trump returned to the White House.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC), which remains in debt and decided against holding a similar convention, was more than happy to focus on the economy.

“The only people reaping the benefits of Trump’s economy are himself, his family, and his ultrarich elite donors. Meanwhile, working families get nothing except sky-high receipts at the grocery store and the pump, unaffordable healthcare premiums, and wages that aren’t keeping up with inflation,” DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer charged.

    ‘Radical left lunatics’

Midterm elections are often a referendum on the party in power, but Republicans used their convention to draw a contrast as they spotlighted the Democrats’ leftward lurch in this year’s primaries and tied the party to far-left and socialist proposals.

“They’re not socialists. They’re not Democrats, they’re communists. We will reject these radical left lunatics,” Trump charged for a second straight night.

Vance, in his address minutes earlier, urged Republicans “to send a message this November that the country does not belong to the radicals.”

    Vance unloads on Democrats

The vice president also argued that Democrats have metastasized into a party that stands against America.

“Let’s never forget that America belongs to those who love it, not those who hate it,” Vance said.

The vice president also targeted Democrats over combustible issues such as race and immigration. And he took aim at Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Senate nominee in battleground Michigan, for suggesting that Vance’s grandfather would object to his marrying a woman of Indian descent.

[SIGN UP TO GET THE POLITICS NEWSLETTER]

“This is what he thinks of my grandfather, a man I loved and who loved his family unconditionally. Abdul looks at him, sees the color of his skin, sees his background, and decides that he could never have loved my wife,” Vance said.

The vice president argued that Democrats are no longer “the party of FDR or JFK. Hell, they’re not even the party of Bill Clinton anymore. The Democrats are the party of hatred. They’re the party that despises America and the people who built it.”

Ahead of his speech, the DNC claimed that “JD Vance has been Donald Trump’s most loyal puppet.”

And the DNC predicted that “Vance will continue to gaslight Americans, but voters know the truth: Trump and Vance have tanked the economy, plunged the country into more endless wars, and failed to make life more affordable for everyday Americans.”

    Vance’s 2028 moment

While he hasn’t said if he’ll seek the presidency in 2028, Vance is seen as the front-runner in the race to succeed Trump.

The convention gave Vance the opportunity to appear as a presidential candidate in waiting.

While in Dallas, Vance was warmly received Thursday morning by delegates from key battleground states, and he headlined a top-dollar fundraiser for the RNC.

And during his address, the vice president was interrupted by shouts of “48.”

But Vance, at least publicly, remains laser focused on 2026.

“We’ve got to take care of business this November, then we’ll worry about what comes next,” Vance quickly responded.

FIRST ON FOX: Top Senate Republicans are unleashing millions of dollars into Texas to ensure that the GOP holds on to the seat as the midterm elections close in.

The Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC tied to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., plans to launch the Texas PAC, unlocking a war chest of campaign funds to ensure Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton wins out in November.

Paxton is in a tight race against Texas State Rep. James Talarico, who has become a prime target for Republicans who argue that the state lawmaker is too progressive for deep red Texas.

THUNE-ALIGNED GROUPS UNLEASH HISTORIC WAR CHEST TO DEFEND SENATE MAJORITY: ‘WINNING MESSAGE’

Ken Paxton, Texas attorney general and Republican U.S. Senate candidate, speaks during the first day of the Republican Midterm Convention at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026.(Bloomberg via Getty Images)

“As the Democrat Party gets pulled further to the left, extreme candidates like James Talarico are becoming the norm,” Thune told Fox News Digital in a statement. “Republicans are united in keeping him out of the U.S. Senate, which is why I’m proud of the work the Senate Leadership Fund is doing to ensure Texas stays red.”

A source familiar told Fox News Digital that during the convention’s final day on Thursday, Thune attended a fundraiser for Paxton to help boost his campaign.

The new PAC will launch an initial eight-figure ad buy on Friday, the day after the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention in Dallas is set to wrap up. The group tells Fox News Digital they plan to run ads continuously through Election Day in Texas, and the first two will paint Paxton in a positive light, with another showing the contrast between the candidates.

LONGTIME GOP AIDE DEFECTS TO DEM RISING STAR AS TEXAS SENATE BATTLE FOR CORNYN’S SEAT HEATS UP

While the convention has been used to energize President Donald Trump’s base to get out and vote in tight contests across the country, the Texas Senate race was of particular emphasis. And the flow of cash to support Paxton marks a pivot for the Senate Republican leadership, who earlier in the year, threw their full support behind Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas.

But Trump’s endorsement of Paxton over Cornyn ultimately ended the longtime lawmaker’s bid and set up a messy period of making amends after the dust settled in their runoff race.

Now, Republicans are showing a unified front and working to help Paxton financially as he tries to stave off Talarico.

Most of the latest public opinion surveys in the Senate showdown indicate Talarico with a slight single-digit edge over Paxton. The most recent Fox News poll, which was conducted at the end of July, indicated Talarico with a 51%-48% margin over Paxton.

The race is one of roughly a dozen that will determine if the GOP holds its Senate majority in the midterms.

The launch of the Texas PAC comes a week after MAGA, Inc., the super PAC linked to PresidentDonald Trump, made its first major midterm buy with $10 million in ad spending to support Paxton.

The support from the Texas PAC and MAGA Inc. is a boost for Paxton, with Talarico’s campaign holding a massive campaign cash advantage over Paxton’s campaign heading into the final stretch leading up to November’s midterms. Talarico has hauled in over $72 million in fundraising since launching his Senate campaign last year, compared to roughly $17 million by Paxton, according to federal filings.

Paxton told Fox News’ Bret Baier he had a “three-month fundraising difference” compared to Talarico thanks to the messy primary battle that dragged into May, months after the insurgent progressive toppled Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas.

“Talarico had three extra months to raise money and not spend it. So he was able to start spending on ads that tried to pivot him from a radical socialist to a moderate Democrat,” Paxton said.

“So he’s been running ads for about two months,” he continued. “My ads have just started. We had to raise some money. But once we’re able to highlight the stark differences between a socialist and a constitutional Republican, he will not win Texas.”

President Donald Trump will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks at the Pentagon on Friday, honoring the victims and first responders who lost their lives that day.

“As a proud New Yorker, President Trump has spoken about his own experiences watching the horrific events of September 11, 2001,” White House principal deputy press secretary Anna Kelly told Fox News Digital.

“On the 25th anniversary of this tragic day, the president will remember those who were killed at the hands of evil terrorists, honor their loved ones, and pay tribute to the brave first responders who put their lives on the line to rescue their fellow Americans,” Kelly added.

Vance will join former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, as well as former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, in New York for a remembrance ceremony.

Last year, Trump and first lady Melania Trump attended a 9/11 commemoration at the Pentagon and issued a Patriot Day proclamation calling for flags to be flown at half-staff.

He later attended a Yankees-Tigers game featuring tributes to the victims in the Bronx, New York City.

Trump was a real-estate developer in New York City at the time of the attacks and watched the tragedy unfold in real time.

“I have a window that looks directly at the World Trade Center, and I saw this huge explosion. I was with a group of people and I really couldn’t even believe it,” Trump said in a phone interview with WWOR-TV channel 9 on the tragic day.

Ontario premier wants Republicans to lose House and Senate over Trump’s trade war

    September 11, 2026 5:45am EDT / Fox News

Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged US voters to hold President Donald Trump accountable for the ongoing trade war with Canada

    By Landon Mion Fox News

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Thursday that he hopes Republicans in the U.S. lose both the House and Senate in the upcoming midterm elections, suggesting that voters should punish President Donald Trump for his moves to escalate the ongoing trade war with Canada.

“Hopefully, he’s going to lose the Senate. He’s going to lose Congress. I hope so, and hold him accountable,” Ford said.

“But we’ll see how that goes. We aren’t going to interfere in the U.S. election,” he continued.

Ford has become one of Trump’s most outspoken critics in Canada, accusing the president of attempting to move Ontario’s businesses and jobs across the border to the U.S.

“He’s not reliable at all,” Ford said. “He could make a deal today and then change his mind. And we’ve seen that over and over again.”

Ford said he still believes Trump would like to reach a deal before the midterms and that Canada should return to the negotiation table as soon as possible.

“I truly believe President Trump wants a deal before the midterms,” Ford said. “I could be wrong, but I think it’s best that we sit down and get a deal.”

Ford’s comments come just days after the U.S. escalated the trade dispute by banning some Canadian dairy products and motorcycles as well most alcoholic beverages after Canada’s retaliatory tariffs took effect on about $20 billion in U.S. goods.

Trump also took efforts to remove Canadian products from large, long-term U.S. government contracts.

Last year, Trump abruptly ended trade talks with Canada after the Ontario government broadcast an anti-tariff TV ad in the U.S., using quotes from former Republican President Ronald Reagan’s criticism of tariffs.

Trump and Ford have repeatedly exchanged personal jabs over the trade war.

Ford mocked Trump for keeping a portrait of Reagan near his desk while pushing for tariffs the former president had opposed, telling The Associated Press that Reagan would be “throwing up on him from the picture if he knew what was going on.”

Trump, meanwhile, has criticized Ford as “the less charismatic, intelligent, and overall unimpressive brother of the late, great, Rob Ford.”

The U.S. president further escalated tensions with Canada when he signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” a rebranding that Canada does not recognize.

Canada, other international bodies and U.S. states are not forced to follow the renaming, but the order adds to the ongoing tensions between the two countries.

Ford said on Thursday that Trump had unintentionally strengthened Canada by forcing it to cut its dependence on the U.S.

“The only two good things Donald Trump has ever done for Canada” were that “he woke us up” and “he united the country like I’ve never seen before,” Ford said.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney suggested on Thursday that his country may hold off on further retaliation against Trump’s latest trade measures, describing them as “relatively modest” compared to earlier U.S. moves.

He said his government was still studying the U.S. measures and acknowledged they could have significant consequences for companies and industries, but he said that some of the new U.S. tariffs replaced others that the Trump administration had removed.

“We also recognize that, in the context of other things that the U.S. administration has done … that these are relatively modest measures,” Carney said at a cabinet retreat in Banff, Alberta.

    • “MAGA Inc.”

Trump and Musk super PACs unleash millions to boost Republicans in battleground races

    2026-09-11T10:02:43.591Z / Reuters

    Summary

    • No Going Back reserves more than $24.9 million in ad time across six battleground states, AdImpact says
    • MAGA Inc. puts $10 million into Texas Senate race while Musk group adds $2.4 million
    • New Trump-affiliated PAC registered only on September 1

NEW YORK, Sept 11 (Reuters) – The two biggest Republican money players in the 2026 midterm elections – U.S. President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk – have finally turned on the spigot with less than eight weeks to go before Election Day.

With Republicans facing the prospect ‌of losing control of at least one chamber of Congress, and polling showing Democrats more motivated to vote, a group connected to Trump has begun spending tens of millions of dollars to reserve blocks of TV ad time in close races.

Trump, whose approval rating is stuck at the lowest level of his political career, told reporters last week that he planned to allocate $400 million to $500 million to boost Republicans in the midterms.

The Trump-affiliated Republican political action committee No Going Back has locked in more than $24.9 million in ad time across six battleground states: Alaska, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Ohio, according to political ad research firm AdImpact.

Additionally, Musk’s America PAC and Trump’s main fundraising arm MAGA Inc. have in recent days poured $2.4 million and $10 million respectively into the race for a U.S. Senate seat in Texas where state Attorney General Ken Paxton risks becoming the first Republican to lose to a Democrat in a state-wide election there in decades.

About $6.9 million of that money is being spent on attack ads against Democratic state lawmaker James Talarico who leads Paxton by 2.1 percentage points in an average of polls compiled by Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin.

“Republicans now must spend real money defending an expanded map,” said Republican strategist Brad Dayspring of Purple Strategies in Alexandria, Virginia. “When you suddenly have to put millions into Texas, having President Trump and Musk open their wallets gives Republicans the ability to shore up vulnerable races without draining resources from the rest of the map.”

Musk’s America PAC expects to play a major role in Republican voter turnout efforts in key states, with spending on door knockers, digital advertising and direct-mail campaigns ahead of the November 3 election. He’s already spent more than $7 million on digital advertising, text messages, voter calls, mailers and other printed materials, federal filings show. A spokesman for the PAC declined to comment.

    NEW FUNDRAISING ARM

Trump’s midterm war chest is supporting the new No Going Back super PAC, according to one ‌person familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified. It is unclear how much of Trump’s war chest will be allocated through this new group.

Though Trump’s MAGA Inc. and No Going Back aren’t yet formally affiliated with each other, they share the same treasurer – Charles Gantt – phone number and address at the same firm in Massachusetts. Gantt, MAGA Inc. and No Going Back didn’t return requests for comment.

The New York Times reported that No Going Back spent $49 million reserving advertising on Tuesday and Wednesday alone.

It is not clear why the new PAC, which registered with the Federal Election Commission on September 1, was established but Republican strategist Ron Bonjean said it helps distance Trump and his MAGA movement from campaign donations as voters sour on the president.

Any advertising from the new PAC will be credited to No Going Back PAC instead of MAGA Inc., a name closely tied to Trump’s political brand.

“It’s a brilliant strategy because it takes MAGA out of the name. It takes any affiliation to Trump out of the name. It has an innocuous name that no one will care about as opposed to MAGA Inc., which could turn off independent voters right away,” said Bonjean, a partner at bipartisan public affairs firm Rokk Solutions in Washington.

The new PAC has used some of the same vendors as MAGA Inc. to carry out its work and in August some officials from MAGA Inc. started telegraphing to Republicans their intention to create a new PAC, according to the person familiar with the operation.

The timing of No Going Back’s registration will delay full disclosure of its donors until late October, according to FEC rules.

Trump capped the first day of his Republican Party’s first-ever midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday by proposing to pay every U.S. adult a $5,000 “Trump dividend” if the party wins the congressional elections. It was not immediately clear how the $5,000 payments would work or whether they would be legal.

Ceremonies at the 9/11 Memorial in New York, the Pentagon and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania will take place Friday as the nation marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, when 19 al Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners and attacked the United States.

Officials and others with memories of that day reflected on what they witnessed and what they lost in some cases as the nation mourns anew.

Retired Maj. Gen. Bert Mizusawa, who served in senior Army positions at the Pentagon before 9/11, worked as a senior Pentagon official in the time leading up to 9/11 and knew several colleagues who perished that day.

On that Tuesday, Mizusawa said he was watching coverage of the attack on the Twin Towers from his office when reporters broke in to say the Pentagon had been targeted.

“I looked out my window and was able to observe the plume of smoke rising from the attack on the Pentagon,” Mizusawa said. “My normal commute took me directly past the section that was destroyed, and the smoke lingered for days.”

Mizusawa, the GOP nominee for Senate against Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said he also played a role in hiring Army Lt. Gen. Timothy Maude, the highest-ranking military officer killed in the Pentagon attack.

He added he just recently met with the lone survivor of the Pentagon’s staff section that took a direct hit from American Airlines Flight 77 that day.

“I reflected that, as tragic as the attack on the Pentagon was, the low-rise multi-ringed structure saved many lives as it was the virtual opposite form of structure compared to the World Trade Center buildings,” he said.

Warner similarly recalled watching the attacks unfold and seeing smoke rise from the Pentagon that day.

“I vividly remember the September 11 attacks, and I watched the smoke rise above the Pentagon…,” he said. “On the 25th anniversary of these tragic attacks, we remember the lives lost at the Pentagon, in Pennsylvania, and in New York City, and our brave first responders whose heroic actions saved countless lives.”

Also in Virginia, President Donald Trump is expected to attend the Pentagon’s ceremony. Trump has attended 9/11 observances at each of the three attack sites in different years.

In New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani are expected to attend the solemn ceremony and reading-of-names at the World Trade Center site.

Hochul’s opponent, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, told Fox News Digital that that day changed his home state and his family forever.

“The pain has never completely gone away,” Blakeman said. “My nephew Tommy was murdered while he was giving first aid to a severely burned woman. I lost many colleagues and friends on that day. We must never forget the danger facing our country from those with anti-American values.”

Tommy, a New York State Courts officer, was reportedly rendering aid to a victim when Tower Two collapsed on him.

“The terrorist attacks on September 11 forever reshaped our city and state, and every year on the anniversary, New Yorkers feel the weight of unimaginable tragedy and honor the lives lost,” Hochul said, reflecting on the day.

“In the aftermath of 9/11, New Yorkers showed the world what courage, sacrifice and bravery looked like,” she added.

Fox News Digital also reached out to Mamdani for comment.

Additional Trump administration officials will attend the third ceremony in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Last year, Veterans Affairs Secretary Douglas Collins represented the administration there.

The memorial is managed by the Department of the Interior, which said it will hold a reading of the names at 10:03 a.m. ET, the time United Flight 93 crashed into a field near U.S. Route 30 after passengers fought back against the hijackers.

Fox News Digital reached out to Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Pennsylvania State Treasurer Stacy Garrity — Shapiro’s GOP opponent this fall — for information on their plans for the day and comment on the 25th anniversary remembrance.

Garrity will be in attendance at the Flight 93 Memorial in her official capacity as Pennsylvania State Treasurer, her campaign said.

Speaking as the GOP’s gubernatorial nominee, Garrity told Fox News Digital she recalls September 11, 2001, as a bright September morning in the commonwealth that she and others thought would be a run-of-the-mill weekday.

“But in the blink of an eye, in the skies over Lower Manhattan, along the shores of the Potomac, and in the fields of western Pennsylvania, our world was forever changed,” Garrity said.

“Twenty-five years later, may God bless the heroes of Flight 93, the first responders to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and every American who answered the call to serve that day and in the years to follow: Let’s roll,” Garrity added, quoting Flight 93 victim Todd Beamer of Cranbury, N.J., who was recorded calling out that phrase as he led an unsuccessful effort to retake control of the plane from the terrorists.
