The job market is much stronger than economists expected. Why?

    2026-06-05T16:35:00-0400 / CBS News

    By

    Updated on: June 5, 2026 / 6:08 PM EDT / MoneyWatch

Against all odds, the U.S. job market is in a good place.

Employers added 172,000 jobs in May, blowing past analyst forecasts and sustaining the healthy pace of payroll gains from the two prior months. Average monthly job growth from March through May has tripled from roughly 63,000 a year ago to nearly 190,000 this spring.

The economy has faced one headwind after another over the past year: the highest tariffs in more than 70 years; the Iran war; a recurrence of the inflationary pressures that slammed Americans during the pandemic; persistent public pessimism, or “vibecession,” as millions struggle with the cost of living; and immigration restrictions.

Despite these challenges, the labor market is showing surprising strength after weakening toward the end of 2025 and into early 2026.

Several forces account for the recent burst in job growth, according to economists. Strong corporate profits are “a huge part of the equation,” eToro U.S. investment analyst Bret Kenwell told CBS News. “That’s what gives them the leeway to hire.”

U.S. corporations boosted their earnings growth in the first quarter by about 28%, while 85% of S&P 500 companies posted quarterly profits that exceeded analysts’ expectations — the highest share in almost five years, according to a FactSet analysis.

Corporate earnings growth over the last two years has averaged a healthy 11%. Analysts now expect second-quarter profit growth of about 22%, the financial data firm said.

The Republicans’ “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which lowered corporate taxes and provided other breaks, has helped bolster profitability, according to Wall Street analysts.

Stronger corporate growth and profits are most visible in the health care industry. The sector has been the top driver of job creation over the last year, according to a new analysis from job search firm Indeed. The industry has added 610,000 jobs during the past 12 months, far greater than any other sector. Leisure and hospitality contributed the second-largest number of new jobs, at 240,000.

The jump in health care employment reflects the aging U.S. population, with the baby boomer generation demanding more health services as the oldest members of the group approach 80 years old, Indeed director of economic research Laura Ullrich told CBS News.

Besides health care, hiring was also vigorous last month among leisure and hospitality companies ahead of the summer travel season and the 2026 World Cup, which kicks off in June.

The May jobs report “was a little more broad-based than what we have seen — leisure and hospitality was up a lot, local government was up a lot, health care and social assistance were still up,” Ullrich said.

Seasonal demand also likely helped drive May hiring, analysts said. For instance, local government added 55,000 jobs last month, likely due to summer demand for state and local parks workers, public works projects and other summer operations, Dominic Pappalardo, chief multi-asset strategist at Morningstar Wealth, said in a report.

Leisure and hospitality companies, which added 70,000 jobs last month, likely needed to staff up for tourism and travel over the summer, he added.

Robust hiring in those industries is “a positive sign for overall economic activity,” he said.

    Pockets of weakness

The recent upturn in job growth doesn’t appear to have brightened many Americans’ outlook: 7 in 10 said they believe it would be somewhat to very difficult for them to find a new job, according to recent CBS News polling.

Such pessimism may reflect the labor market’s weakness at the end of 2025 and the start of 2026, when employers shed an average of 4,300 jobs a month from December through February.

Yet the encouraging employment numbers of late don’t tell the full story. The hires and quits rates both remain seriously depressed, and workers who might otherwise jump ship to something better are staying put because the off-ramps have dried up.

For those who are out of work, meanwhile, low layoffs offer little comfort when tepid hiring makes a job search more difficult.

Some industries have also shed jobs over the past year, indicating pockets of weakness underneath the recent strong headline payroll numbers, Ullrich said. Sectors with year-over-year employment losses include government and financial services, which have lost 174,000 and 107,000 jobs, respectively, according to Indeed’s analysis.

“Seven sectors are up in terms of employment year-over-year, and seven sectors are down,” she said.

Some types of workers, like recent college grads and laid-off workers, are also struggling to find work. Nearly 28% of the unemployed in April had been jobless for more than six months, the largest share since December 2021.

“Two things can be true at the same time,” Ullrich said. “You can have a relatively strong jobs report for May, and job seekers can be struggling. Those things are possible to happen at the same time.”

Park ranger dies after falling into crevasse on America’s tallest peak

    June 5, 2026 / 6:43 PM EDT / CBS/AP

A ranger in Alaska died after falling into a crevasse on North America’s tallest mountain, the National Park Service said.

Robin Pendery of Enumclaw, Washington, was a seasonal mountaineering ranger assigned to Denali National Park and Preserve. She fell Thursday while on climbing patrol on Mount McKinley and died despite immediate rescue efforts, the park service said.

The death is under investigation. It comes only a week after three climbers from a Latvian mountaineering expedition died after falling near a treacherous pass on McKinley. A fourth climber was rescued. They were part of a seven-person team traversing a route known for its exposed sections, where many climbers have died or been injured over the years.

In June 2025, a climber died after falling 3,000 feet while ascending the West Buttress climbing route on the mountain, the park service has said.

The Alaska national park draws roughly 600,000 visitors each year, primarily during late May to early September, according to the park service. McKinley, also known as Denali, stands at about 20,310 feet. Pendery fell near what’s known as the 14,000-foot camp.

Pendery joined the Denali mountaineering staff in 2024, where she helped support climber safety, emergency response and mountaineering operations, the National Park Service said.

“Our mountaineering rangers dedicate themselves to serving visitors and helping others in one of the most challenging environments in the world,” Denali Superintendent Brooke Merrell said in a statement Friday. “Today, we mourn the loss of a valued colleague, friend and teammate.”

After deadly Virginia bus crash, investigators probe company’s links to other carriers

The company that operated a bus involved in a deadly crash in Virginia last week has ties to a broader network of travel firms, including one shut down by regulators a decade ago due “excessive” speeding violations, a CBS News investigation has found. Now, federal authorities are also looking into those connections.

The network bears some of the hallmarks of operators who, under scrutiny of federal safety regulators, stay in business by creating new companies under different names, but at the same locations, with the same people and and sometimes using the same buses. In the trucking and passenger bus industry, they are commonly called chameleon carriers. The phenomenon has been the subject of a yearlong CBS News investigation that identified at least 10,000 of them across the country.

“It’s about hiding who you are,” said Rob Carpenter, a safety consultant for the trucking and busing industries. “When a company gets to disappear and come back as a stranger, every bad brake and unqualified driver disappears right along with it until a wreck on the interstate drags it all back into the daylight.”

Five people were killed and dozens injured on May 29 when an E&P Travel Inc. bus slammed into traffic stopped at a work zone on I-95 in Stafford County, Virginia.

Five people were killed when a bus struck vehicles on Interstate 95 near Quantico, Virginia, on May 29, 2026. Virginia State Police via AP

That crash followed a similar incident in 2024 when nine people were injured when an E&P Travel bus rammed into a vehicle at a construction site in North Carolina.

The U.S. Department of Transportation is currently probing E&P Travel Inc.’s potential links to more than a dozen current and former bus companies operating in the Northeast, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is working with other agencies to investigate the latest crash, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy said. “Any company, trainer, or school that contributed to putting an unqualified driver on the road will face intense scrutiny,” Duffy said.

An FMCSA spokesperson on Thursday declined to discuss details of the investigation.

In addition to the accidents, E&P Travel itself has been cited three times in two years for “speeding 15 or more miles per hour over the speed limit” and once for a driver who failed an English proficiency test, federal records show.

The driver of the bus in last week’s crash, Jing S. Dong of Staten Island, New York, is now facing five felony involuntary manslaughter charges. Despite the company’s history of violations, E&P received a “satisfactory” safety rating from the FMCSA in April.

The bus ended up off the road after crashing into other vehicles on Interstate 95 in near Quantico, Virginia, on May 29, 2026. Virginia State Police via AP

E&P Travel was incorporated in North Carolina in November 2023, listing its headquarters as a residential apartment in Kings Mountain, N.C., and its CEO as Shuo Liu. Efforts to reach Liu at the company’s email address and phone number were not immediately successful.

E&P Travel’s filings with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in 2023 list its officer as Joyce Gao. Joyce Gao is also listed on a motorcoach association directory as the CEO of a separate bus company, Super Bus Inc.

Ronghai Gao, the president of Super Bus Inc. according to Massachusetts records, told CBS News Thursday that listing is incorrect and that he is the CEO of Super Bus.

Ronghai Gao said Joyce Gao was a bookkeeper at Super Bus until about April. He declined to say whether he and Joyce Gao are related. “I cannot tell you about it,” he said. “This is my personal stuff.”

Ronghai Gao also declined to discuss Joyce Gao’s apparent employment at his company while she was an officer at the then newly-formed E&P Travel. “That’s her personal stuff,” he said. Gao declined to answer further questions and the call was terminated. Efforts to reach Joyce Gao were not successful.

Super Bus currently has a “Satisfactory” safety rating from the FMCSA, according to federal records, which list 15 violations over the past two years including speeding and other issues.

The names Ronghai Gao and Joyce Gao are tied to multiple current and former busing operations in the Northeast, CBS News found.

One of those companies is Pandora Travel Inc., a Massachusetts-headquartered firm that ran regular bus tours from a storefront in New York City to destinations across the eastern United States. Federal regulators accused the company in a 2014 press release of “continuing serious violations and non-compliance with previously identified federal safety regulations.”

Ronghai Gao was identified in FMCSA investigative records as the general manager for Pandora Travel. He’s also listed as the point of contact for the company in New York City records listing the address at that same storefront.

“Pandora Travel Inc failed to monitor drivers and take corrective action to deter unsafe driving practices,” an FMCSA inspector wrote in regulatory records reviewed by CBS News, despite knowledge of drivers operating in “excess of posted speed limits.”

Records show Pandora’s drivers had “histories that would show patterns of unsafe driving practices,” including one driver with 23 speeding and moving violations.

Citations against Pandora Travel included failing to exercise caution while operating in a heavy snow storm in January 2014, resulting in a rollover crash on I-80 in New Jersey that injured seven people.

The FMCSA reviewed GPS data and found four drivers were “exceeding the posted speeds by 10mph or greater for 50 days out of 135 days reviewed,” according to inspection records.

When FMCSA officials visited the Lawrence, Massachusetts, headquarters of Pandora Travel in 2014 they found an empty desk, a vacuum cleaner, and no staff or business paperwork, according to pictures and notes included in the regulatory filings.

Regulators reached a settlement agreement with Pandora Travel in 2014 that allowed it to continue operating under certain conditions.

Regulators ordered Pandora Travel shut down for good in 2017 after finding that the company “engaged in a pattern or practice of avoiding regulatory compliance or masking or otherwise concealing regulatory noncompliance.”

Democrat Xavier Becerra will advance to November election in California governor’s race, CNN projects

    2026-06-05T23:47:39.456Z / CNN

Former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra has secured a spot in California’s gubernatorial general election this November, CNN projects.

His opponent remains undecided between Republican Steve Hilton and billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer in the nonpartisan primary.

Becerra’s opponents criticized his handling of the child migrant crisis and the mpox outbreak during his time in the Biden administration.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

Former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, a Democrat, will advance to the November election in California’s governor’s race, CNN’s Decision Desk projects. It’s not yet clear who he’ll face in November.

Becerra’s advancement guarantees a Democrat will be in the general election after some feared that their wide field of candidates would split the vote, allowing Republicans to lock them out of the general election.

The race to face him in November is still too early to call, with former Fox News host Steve Hilton, a Republican, and billionaire Democratic activist Tom Steyer in contention for the second spot in November.

In the votes reported since Election Day on Tuesday, Becerra pulled ahead of Hilton and also increased his lead over Steyer, making it clear he would finish inside the top two.

    | CANDIDATE | VOTES |
    | — | — |
    | Xavier Becerra Democratic | 26.7% 1,655,928 |
    | Steve Hilton Republican | 26.4% 1,639,335 |
    | Tom Steyer Democratic | 21.0% 1,303,692 |
    | Chad Bianco Republican | 10.8% 668,895 |
    | Katie Porter Democratic | 4.5% 281,486 |

If Steyer advances, a Democrat would be guaranteed to succeed term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom, but only after a campaign that would likely be expensive and brutal. Steyer, who made his fortune as a hedge fund manager, has already poured more than $200 million into his campaign. Some of that money has gone toward attacking Becerra over his record during the Biden administration.

Should Hilton prevail, the Republican would face a steep uphill climb in the general. There are roughly 4.6 million more registered Democrats than there are Republicans in California, according to the state’s most recent voter registration statistics. California hasn’t elected a Republican governor in 20 years, when voters gave Arnold Schwarzenegger a second term.

Tuesday night closed out a primary in which voters appeared to be continually underwhelmed by their options, particularly on the Democratic side. Former Vice President Kamala Harris and US Sen. Alex Padilla — high-profile Democrats who could have potentially consolidated the field — declined to run. Other candidates dropped out after failing to gain traction.

Becerra, who also served as a Los Angeles-area US congressman and California attorney general, ran on his years of experience in various governmental roles and argued that only someone who had managed crises could fix California’s current problems.

But Becerra also had to weather attacks on the very same record. Critics and opponents — including Steyer, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa — criticized Becerra’s handling of the child migrant crisis and the mpox outbreak. Allies said those attacks were unfair.

“He inherited a super, super tough situation, and worked night and day, day and night, to try to do the humane thing by these kids and get them reunited with their US family members,” Ron Klain, President Joe Biden’s first White House chief of staff, told CNN in April.

Becerra’s opponents also criticized him after his former chief of staff pleaded guilty to a fraud charge related to a scheme to siphon money from a Becerra campaign account. Becerra has not been accused of any wrongdoing by law enforcement.

In the California primary’s other marquee race, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has already advanced to November but it’s not yet clear who her opponent will be. Reality TV star Spencer Pratt is in second place in the mayor’s race, but city council member Nithya Raman, currently in third, has outpaced Pratt in post-election reports by a double-digit margin.

Eric Schmitt rips Hirono over denaturalization bill: ‘You’re damn right we’re deporting’ criminals

    June 5, 2026 5:53pm EDT / Fox News

Hirono called the SCAM Act ‘undemocratic’ and said it holds naturalized citizens to stricter standards than the native-born

Emmer details ‘SCAM Act’ to strip citizenship from those who ‘lie, cheat and steal’

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer joins ‘The Faulkner Focus’ to discuss the unrest in Minneapolis and his new legislation to strip citizenship from naturalized immigrants who commit fraud or terrorism.

Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., criticized Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, during Wednesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing after she accused the Trump administration of “terrorizing immigrant communities” during a session focused on the denaturalization of individuals convicted of fraud and other crimes.

Hirono, a naturalized citizen, remarked on the SCAM Act, or the Stop Citizenship Abuse and Misrepresentation Act, during the hearing, titled “Protecting American Citizenship III: Denaturalization and its Constitutional Limits.” She argued that the bill would impose stricter requirements on naturalized citizens than those born in the United States.

“I happen to be the only naturalized citizen sitting on this committee, and I am horrified by the implication that naturalized citizens basically get second-class citizenship,” she said. “As a naturalized citizen, I’m proud of it. I can’t think of a more undemocratic, un-American thing to do to someone who chooses to become a U.S. citizen than to hold this over their heads and treat us like second-class citizens.”

“We can talk about people 10 years later who commit murder or heinous acts, but the SCAM Act also allows people to be prosecuted for welfare fraud,” she added.

Schmitt subsequently accused Hirono of defending criminals—including rapists, murderers, and fraudsters—who he said were ripping off taxpayers.

“What I’m saying in this bill is if you do those things to the American people, if you take advantage of taxpayers… if you commit a terrorist act, if you commit wholesale welfare fraud, within 10 years, you’re damn right we’re deporting you,” he shot back. “If you are convicted in a court of law of these crimes, absolutely we should not only convict you, but we should deport you. Gone. And if you think that’s some sort of negative assertion toward me, I’ll take it. I love it.”

The Trump administration has claimed that anti-fraud efforts have uncovered billions of dollars, enough to potentially balance the budget.

“Vice President JD Vance and Republicans are doing a great job hunting down Fraud in the various States,” Trump wrote Wednesday on Truth Social. “Billions of Dollars is being found, and we’ve just started!”

Republicans have called for naturalized U.S. citizens to be stripped of their citizenship if they are convicted of certain crimes, including fraud.

Schmitt recalled the case of Mirsad Ramic, who refused to recite the oath of allegiance and instead recited an Islamic oath and cursed non-Muslims at his 2009 naturalization ceremony. Ramic later joined the Islamic State terror group.

Schmitt also noted that Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, the suspected gunman in the Old Dominion University shooting who killed one person and injured two others, was also a naturalized U.S. citizen who had previously been convicted of providing material support to ISIS.

    • 民调显示,选民可能会认为某一行为 disqualifying(丧失参选资格),但仍会支持相关候选人。

When do candidate scandals actually matter?

    2026-06-05T21:08:09.054Z / CNN

    • Polling has shown that voters may find behavior disqualifying yet still support candidates.
    • It largely depends on the circumstances — including the type of problems, how close an election is and the candidate’s personal appeal.
    • Extramarital affairs don’t seem to matter much to voters unless there are other scandalous allegations.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

An exit poll in the contentious 2025 Virginia attorney general’s race included a striking takeaway, with national implications: People who find candidates’ past behavior disqualifying may still vote for them.

Late in the campaign, it had been revealed that Democratic nominee Jay Jones sent text messages years earlier suggesting that a GOP lawmaker should be shot and that his children should die.

Jones still won the election by more than six points. The exit poll showed 41% of voters said the texts were “disqualifying” — but 9% of those people voted for him anyway.

Given that example and plenty of others, including President Donald Trump’s lengthy political career despite his own personal scandals, it can be tempting to assume that personal controversies — like the multitude about Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner — don’t really matter.

The New York Times on Thursday published a lengthy investigation about six women Platner dated, with three saying he had engaged in toxic behavior and one accusing him of physically threatening conduct (Platner has strongly disputed any claims of physical intimidation or altercations). That’s after previous stories about Platner’s Nazi symbol tattoo (that Platner claims he didn’t understand until recently), ugly internet posts and sexting with women who weren’t his wife.

Platner has continued to lead in the polls of the Maine Senate race, despite the tattoo and the internet posts (though those polls don’t reflect the latest revelations).

It might be tempting to reason that the country has just become so partisan that none of it matters. But that’s an over-simplification.

It’s fair to say ugly personal problems don’t matter the way they once did. But depending on the circumstances — including the type of problems, how close an election is and the candidate’s personal appeal — recent history shows they can still play a major role in elections.

Trump’s personal baggage has little comparison in modern American politics. After having his extramarital affairs plastered all over the tabloids for many years, there was the “Access Hollywood” tape’s release in 2016, him being found civilly liable for sexual abuse in 2023 and him being convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in 2024.

He still won the 2024 election, of course.

But it’s clear he did so at least in part because he’s spent years working to mitigate these problems. He not only built a cult of personality in the Republican Party, but he cast himself as an unvarnished advocate for people with better morals — the serial sinner who delivers the faithful. And he undercut the legal scrutiny he faced by relentlessly claiming it was the work of nefarious Democrats.

All of which has given Republicans and enough independents sufficient license to downgrade the importance of these personal problems — if not dismiss them.

And that’s clearly what has happened.

A Gallup poll late in 2024 showed registered voters said by double-digits that Kamala Harris had stronger moral character than Trump. But they also said by double-digits that Trump was a more “strong and decisive leader.”

We know which attribute carried the day.

Also telling is a 2018 CNN poll, which asked whether people believed that Trump had actually engaged in affairs. While 65% of Republican-leaning voters tended to believe that, just 22% said it was “definitely true.” That illustrates another massive factor: the suspension of disbelief.

But something else played a role there, too — extramarital affairs just don’t rank that high on Americans’ scandal-meter.

Even as far back as 2016, Pew Research Center polling showed just 37% of Americans said they would be less likely to vote for a candidate who had an affair. It was less of a perceived problem than having personal financial issues or being an atheist.

A 2014 Quinnipiac University poll, meanwhile, showed people tended to be less concerned about affairs than they were about official misconduct. It became a little bit closer when the affairs also demonstrated hypocrisy (i.e. the candidate ran on moral values).

Recent history bears out that affairs don’t seem to be much of a factor.

There was a school of thought that Democrat Cal Cunningham lost North Carolina’s 2020 US Senate race after a late revelation of an affair. He had been leading in most polls, after all. But in context, his narrow loss was in line with what might have been expected in a state that Trump narrowly won in the same election.

Other recent politicians to lose amid such ugly allegations also generally had other problems.

Republican Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker in 2022 had a myriad personal issues, but he was also a broadly uneven candidate who showed little command of the issues. (He also had hypocrisy issues, in that he pitched himself as anti-abortion rights but was accused of pressuring a woman to seek an abortion — which he denied.)

Republican Roy Moore shockingly lost a 2017 special election for US Senate in deep-red Alabama, after reports that he had pursued relationships with teenage girls decades earlier, while he was in his 30s. Moore denied the allegations.

And 2024 North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson lost that race by a wide margin after revelations by CNN’s KFile about a series of bizarre comments — like calling himself a “black NAZI!” — while posting on a pornographic internet message board.

Virginia Attorney General Jones’ problems also obviously mattered. While he won by more than six points, the other statewide Democratic candidates running on the same ballot won by 12 and 15 points. So Democrats won by enough that day to pull him across the line.

So voters do care about at least some personal scandals.

    Where Platner stands

For Platner, his chances of winning likely boil down to whether people believe these failings are simply a relic of his past and if they will affect how he would represent Maine.

The idea that he might secretly harbor Nazi sympathies because of his tattoo doesn’t seem to have penetrated, at least so far. He’s also pitched himself as someone with real personal failings, but who has worked to grow from them. It’s almost part of his everyman image — somewhat similar to how Trump utilized his playboy image.

But the sexting accusations are more recent, so it’s possible that could give voters pause about Platner’s judgment — and cut against his argument that he’s reformed. While people might be willing to dismiss affairs, the Times reporting could make people believe he’s anti-woman. And given one of the women alleged that Platner knew his tattoo was a Nazi symbol, directly contradicting his public defense that he was unaware until recently, that could erode some voters’ trust.

It also matters how strongly voters feel about him. One thing Platner has going in his favor is that he seems to have a real magnetism as a candidate — not necessarily as much as Trump does with Republicans, but certainly in the same ballpark.

It’s easier for voters to forgive candidates they find likeable, after all. It’s easier to give plausible deniability to someone you really want to succeed.

So it’s hard to say which way this will lean on Platner. While he has proven resilient in polls, Democrats would be well-advised to view those polls skeptically.

After all, GOP Sen. Susan Collins’ Democratic opponent led in every poll in 2020, before Collins won by nine points.

And even the polling Platner leads suggests his support isn’t locked in. A University of Massachusetts Lowell poll last month showed that while 12% of Collins’s supporters said they could change their mind, 18% of Platner’s supporters said the same.

Platner has given them plenty of reason to waver.

The question likely comes down to what voters think is more important: potentially disqualifying behavior or having an additional check on Trump.

US, Shield of the Americas condemn ‘ongoing efforts’ to overthrow Bolivia’s elected president amid unrest

    June 5, 2026 6:43pm EDT / Fox News

A joint statement from 13 nations calls road blockades ‘cynical efforts’ to prevent delivery of food and medicine

    By Brie Stimson Fox News

The United States, along with the other countries that make up the Shield of the Americas, condemned the “ongoing efforts” in Bolivia to “overthrow the legitimately and overwhelmingly elected” government of President Rodrigo Paz on Friday.

“The member countries of Shield of the Americas denounce ongoing efforts to overthrow the legitimately and overwhelmingly elected government of President Rodrigo Paz in Bolivia,” the statement read. “We stand with Paz’s democratic government as it fights back against attempts to drag Bolivia backwards through cynical efforts to prevent the delivery of food, medicine and other vital supplies to the Bolivian people through fake road blockades.”

The statement added that “Mob rule cannot replace the decision that a majority of Bolivians made at the ballot box to turn the page on two decades of corrupt governments.”

It also said that anyone who is funding protests with “dirty money” from drug trafficking and transnational crime “should be held accountable. Those who have legitimate grievances should take advantage of the government’s willingness to dialogue, and denounce those who would abuse their causes to regain power.”

The State Department made the joint statement along with Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, and Trinidad and Tobago.

The statement comes as Bolivia’s capital, La Paz, has been rocked by weeks of social unrest as mass protests have blocked streets in major cities amid economic inflation and rising fuel prices.

Bolivian Defense Minister Marcelo Salinas resigned Tuesday.

Upon taking office, Paz supported a land reform bill to boost agribusiness that Indigenous farmers said put them at risk of eviction. He further scrapped fuel subsidies, sending prices surging by nearly 90%. Motorists complained that the gasoline was contaminated and ruined their cars.

The Trump administration has said drug traffickers are responsible for inciting the mass unrest.

Meanwhile, former President Evo Morales of the Movement for Socialism (MAS) party, the country’s first Indigenous president who ruled for an unprecedented 14 years, is calling for early elections. “Paz only has two paths left: a suicidal decision like militarization or … an election in the next 90 days,” he wrote on X.

    image

Graham Platner faces another controversy days ahead of Maine Senate primary

    June 5, 2026 / 4:08 PM EDT / CBS News

For the second time this week, Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing another major controversy just days ahead of the Maine primary he is poised to win.

On Thursday, the New York Times reported allegations of Platner’s “unsettling” behavior toward women he dated, including one claim that he was physically abusive, which Platner denies.

According to the Times, Platner’s then-girlfriend, Lyndsey Fifield, said that while they were dating a decade ago, he “regularly grabbed her by the shoulders — sometimes hard enough to leave marks.” During one argument, he “twisted her arm behind her back, shoved her into a bedroom, and held the door closed.”

In an interview with MS Now after the Times report was published, Platner denied Fifield’s claims. “There are some allegations in this piece that I just want to be kind of unequivocal about, are simply not true,” he said.

Platner, a political novice and oyster farmer, has also insisted that he did not know a chest tattoo he got as a Marine while drunk in 2007 is a widely recognized Nazi symbol. He has since had the tattoo covered up. But Fifield told the Times that Platner did know its significance, and that he even joked about it.

“Anything alleging physicality, anything alleging that I knew what my tattoo was — these are the statements of someone who is politically motivated,” Platner said in the interview.

In a statement to CBS News, Platner said: “Throughout this campaign, I’ve been open about what was a very dark period of my life where I struggled with undiagnosed PTSD, too often self medicated with alcohol, and was a far from perfect boyfriend. I take responsibility for all of that, and wish I had been better. Any characterization beyond that is false, and I believe, politically motivated. I’m not proud of who I was then, but I am proud of the work I’ve done since, and the movement we are building in Maine.”

Fifield is a conservative who lives in Virginia and has worked for Republican campaigns and the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, according to publicly available bios. She said she dated Platner from 2013-2015, and told the Times that she has not been paid by a political campaign or entity since she worked briefly for Nikki Haley’s 2024 presidential campaign.

Platner also acknowledged he sent sexually explicit text messages to other women soon after he married his wife, Amy Gertner, in 2023. Gertner had disclosed the existence of the messages to the campaign soon after it launched. On Thursday, Platner told MS Now: “At the beginning of our marriage, I made mistakes, and Amy held me accountable for them. And we worked through them.”

Maine’s Senate race is one of the most closely watched in the country — it’s among a small number of toss-ups that could determine who controls the Senate after the midterm elections this fall. Platner faced scrutiny from some Democratic senators when he visited them in Washington, D.C., earlier this week. Vermont Sen. Peter Welch told CBS News that during the meeting, he told Platner that “he has the obligation as a candidate to address the legitimate questions that Mainers have, the personal and political.”

Others have been standing by Platner. California Rep. Ro Khanna is planning to campaign for the candidate at a get-out-the-vote rally in Maine Friday night. In a statement, Khanna said: “The behavior described in the New York Times story was wrong and toxic. Graham has acknowledged that and sought redemption. The people of Maine deserve a senator who is going to stand up to the billionaire class, against genocide, and for the working class.”

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders was one of the first to endorse Platner, even as Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer backed Gov. Janet Mills earlier in the primary. “All I can tell you is that the wealthiest people in this country have now reserved close to $100 million in TV ads in a small state like Maine. So, what are the billionaires worried about? Why are they spending so much money trying to defeat this guy? The answer is that he’s going to stand up to the oligarchs,” Sanders told reporters ahead of the meeting with Platner in D.C. on Tuesday.

Mills dropped out of the race in April, but her name will remain on the ballot in Tuesday’s primary.

After the new allegations surfaced in the Times, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who chairs the Senate Democrats campaign arm, told reporters: “We’re still doing Maine.” Gillibrand helped lead the charge to drive then-Sen. Al Franken out of office in 2017 after misconduct allegations.

Others say they won’t support him. “He lied to everybody. He said that there wasn’t any[thing] after his Nazi tattoo situation. And now there’s more and more of these things,” Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman told CBS News. “So I assume, you know, it’s like they say — for every ranch you see in Texas, there’s 50 that you haven’t seen.”
