WASHINGTON, Sept 21 (Reuters) – A man was convicted by a jury of attempted murder in the late 2023 shooting of three Palestinian ‌American students in Vermont, two of whom were wounded and one was left paralyzed from the waist down, prosecutors said on Monday.

Jason Eaton was found guilty on three counts of attempted second-degree murder for the shootings of Hisham ​Awartani, Tahseen Aliahmad and Kinnan Abdalhamid on November 25, 2023, in Burlington, Vermont, prosecutor Sarah ​George, the Chittenden County state’s attorney, said in a statement.

The conviction rejected Eaton’s insanity ⁠defense and he will be sentenced at a later time, George said. A jury trial commenced ​in the Chittenden Superior Court a week ago and lasted till Monday.

Eaton faces a sentence of up ​to life without parole, with a presumptive minimum term of 20 years to serve on each count, George said.

The three Palestinian American students, who grew up in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, were walking in Burlington when Eaton approached and ​shot them, prosecutors and police said.

Awartani was paralyzed from the chest down and now lives with paraplegia, ​his family said. Aliahmad was struck in the chest and Abdalhamid was struck in the glute while running away, ‌according ⁠to prosecutors. Aliahmad and Abdalhamid were visiting Awartani’s grandmother over a Thanksgiving break from school.

All three were 20 at the time and wore black-and-white Palestinian keffiyeh scarves while conversing in a mix of English and Arabic when the gunman confronted them, prosecutors said. Their families said on Monday justice “has been rendered” and ​that they feel relief.

Though ​Eaton pleaded not guilty, ⁠he did not dispute being the shooter. His legal team said he should not be found guilty due to insanity, referring to his claims that ​US and Israeli intelligence ordered him to carry out the shooting through radio ​and that ⁠God asked him to protect Jewish neighbors.

US rights advocates have noted rising anti-Arab, anti-Muslim and anti-Jewish bias since the start of US ally Israel’s devastating assault on Gaza following a deadly October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.

Some fatal incidents that have ⁠sparked ​alarm include a 2023 deadly stabbing of a 6-year-old Palestinian ​American child in Illinois whose killer was sentenced to 53 years in prison and died in custody, and a 2026 San Diego mosque shooting ​that left five dead, including two teenage suspects.

A decision to invite New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to Manhattan’s annual Columbus Day Parade has sparked backlash among some Italian-American leaders.

The Columbus Citizens Foundation, which is responsible for holding the parade, invited Mamdani in the hopes of fostering a better relationship between City Hall and the Italian-American community, the New York Post reported. Mamdani’s past criticism of Italian explorer Christopher Columbus, however, has sparked backlash among Italians who feel inviting the mayor is in poor taste.

“Are you kidding me? This is a WEAK and FECKLESS move by the organizers,” Italian American Civil Rights League president Mike Crispi wrote on X. “Zohran has showed contempt for our people and kissing a** won’t change his true feelings. Italian Americans need to wake up and get tough. It’s the only way to preserve our culture.”

Crispi’s criticism was a reference to a 2020 social media post where Mamdani posted a photo of himself brandishing his middle finger at a statue of Columbus with the caption “take it down.” Columbus holds a near-legendary status among Italian Americans, with the 15th-century explorer viewed by many as a historic link between their heritage and the United States.

“We feel cooperating is always the better path . . . and we hope to create a good relationship with his office,” Columbus Citizens Foundation president Christopher Loiacono told the New York Post when asked about his decision to invite Mamdani. “We hope he will be more open to [working] with the Italian community.”

It is unclear if Mamdani has accepted the invitation to the parade. Columbus Day falls on Monday, Oct. 12, with New York City’s annual Columbus Day Parade set for Manhattan.

“This is a man who has made it clear that he doesn’t respect Christopher Columbus, and he doesn’t even think us enough of a group to put on his immigrant enclave map,” New York City Councilwoman Joann Ariola, a Republican from Queens, wrote in response. “Why would he want to be there? To get pictures and pretend he’s a paisan now? He should sit this one out.”

Ariola’s comment was an apparent reference to a map of ethnic enclaves published by the city earlier this year that excluded Little Italy, which also sparked backlash from Italians. The map was initially created by the previous administration in 2023, and Mamdani said his administration added several neighborhoods before releasing the 2026 version.

Nonetheless, Mamdani has moved to update the map to include Little Italy.

A Columbus Day parade wouldn’t be the first public event Mamdani has attended this year to draw organized opposition to his presence. The mayor’s presence at the annual memorial service at Ground Zero on Sept. 11 spurred some family members of victims to circulate a petition demanding that he stay home.

“Just as Mamdani’s presence at the 9/11 Ceremony was inappropriate, we Italian/Americans don’t want him on Columbus Day either,” right-wing political operative Roger Stone wrote on X.

Some non-Italians are offended on behalf of the community.

“I’m not Italian but I’ve been an honorary dignitary for 5 years running at the Columbus Day Parade thanks to my friend Angelo Vivolo,” Jewish radio host Sid Rosenberg wrote on X. “The organizers of the parade invited [Mamdani] to attend? What? This Radical Islam mother fcker gave the finger to a Columbus statue and left Little Italy/Arthur Avenue OFF his bullsht immigrant map … When did my Italian brothers and sisters become so soft! … I will NOT attend this year if he is there.”

“The Italians need to step up and stop this!” he added.

Crispi has threatened to hold a competing Columbus Day parade next year if the Columbus Citizens Foundation does not revoke its invitation to the mayor.

For national Democrats, Republican Rep. Mike Lawler of New York is a top target to beat in the midterm elections this fall.

On Monday, however, Rep. Jared Golden, a retiring moderate Democrat from Maine, endorsed Lawler.

It was the third time in recent weeks that Golden defied his party, arguing in an op-ed that Lawler is the exact kind of Republican that Democrats should be fighting to keep.

“We have real adversaries in this world, and they are not our fellow citizens. When candidates for office tell voters that the gravest danger to this country is other Americans and the leaders they elect, that is radical talk, and it is the same politics of fear I have refused to practice for my entire career,” Golden wrote in The Journal News.

Lawler’s upstate New York district is one of the few GOP-held seats that Kamala Harris won in the 2024 presidential election. Inside Elections rates the race in New York’s 17th Congressional District as a toss-up.

Golden has been a thorn in the side of his Democratic colleagues, especially in recent weeks. He voted twice with Republicans to advance procedural votes, including paving the way for the GOP to force a vote on a resolution denouncing socialism. The party will likely use the measure against Democrats on the campaign trail.

Golden’s move became a major flash point within the party as members discussed whether lawmakers should be penalized for voting with Republicans on procedural votes. So far, Democratic leaders have not carried out any punishment.

In his op-ed, Golden applauded Lawler for his work with him on a bill to support lobstermen, which the New York Republican didn’t exactly gain to benefit much from, Golden wrote.

“There is not a single lobster boat in his district. He got no votes in this and no headlines back home. He signed on because a historic American industry, thousands of fishing families, and the principle that federal rules should be built on facts were all on the line. And he understands that in every community, not just in Maine, mom-and-pop shops have been around for generations, and their livelihoods make up the very foundation of our communities,” Golden wrote.

A federal appeals court ruled Monday that Missouri must use a GOP-friendly congressional redistricting plan for November’s election but put that ruling on hold for a week so the Supreme Court could review the dispute.

The ruling from the US 8th Circuit Court of Appeals is the latest twist in a whiplash legal wrangling over the map, injecting another round of uncertainty, as it does not take effect immediately but rather sets up another round of appeals.

The Missouri Supreme Court previously said the 6-1 Republican-leaning map adopted by the legislature last year could not be used because of a referendum challenge brought against it under the state constitution.

The Missouri Supreme Court ordered election officials to use an older, 5-2 redistricting plan even though the 2025 plan had been used in the state’s primary. The US Supreme Court declined to reverse that ruling, and it then paused a federal judge’s ruling that sought to revive the 6-1 map.

The new ruling from the 8th Circuit said requiring voters to cast general election ballots on the older plan violates the US Constitution.

It relied on estimates put forward by a conservative group in the case to conclude “that more than 1.4 million Missourians could not vote for the congressional district nominees who will appear on their November 2026 general election ballot, and more than a quarter-million Missourians who voted in the August 2026 primary election cast a vote for a congressional district candidate who now cannot represent them.”

Missouri’s new map targeted the 5th Congressional District, held by Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, by breaking up its Kansas City base and stretching it into rural and Republican-leaning parts of the state.

The group that launched the referendum campaign against the GOP-leaning map noted in a statement reacting to the new ruling that “Ballots have been printed, and Missourians have already voted.”

“Thousands more will vote before this order seeks to take effect,” the statement from People Not Politicians said. “Officials should stop wasting taxpayers’ money on pointless legal action and instead focus on administering our elections.”

NEW YORK, Sept 21 (Reuters) – A US appeals court ruled on Monday in favor of a Republican-drawn congressional map in Missouri that aimed to help the party maintain ​its slim majority in the House of Representatives, although the map will not ‌be used in November’s midterm elections without further intervention from the US Supreme Court.

The ruling by the St. Louis, Missouri-based 8th US Circuit Court of Appeals risked injecting further confusion about the boundaries of ​the state’s congressional districts with the midterms less than two months away. President ​Donald Trump’s Republicans are fighting to keep control of both chambers of ⁠Congress.

Missouri Republicans adopted the new map, which dismantled the Kansas City-based seat of longtime ​Democratic Representative Emanuel Cleaver, in 2025 as part of a broader effort backed by Trump ​to redraw congressional districts to benefit Republican candidates.

On September 3, Missouri’s top court unanimously blocked the new map, siding with challengers who had argued it must be approved by voters in a November referendum before ​it can take effect.

But a federal judge then issued a temporary order blocking the state ​court’s decision and requiring Missouri to use the Republican-drawn map in the midterms. The U.S. Supreme Court ‌subsequently ⁠paused that order. Missouri officials said they would use a prior map that left Cleaver’s district intact.

The Supreme Court’s pause remains in effect for now. The 8th Circuit directed the lower court to enter a permanent injunction allowing for the Republican-drawn map, but also said the ​ruling would be paused ​until Monday, September ⁠28 at 5 p.m. CT (2200 GMT) to give the Supreme Court time to weigh in. It was not immediately clear if either ​Missouri Republicans or the map’s challengers would ask the Supreme Court ​to take up ⁠the case again before the midterms.

At a hearing on September 17, a three-judge panel of the 8th Circuit — which included two judges appointed by Trump during his first term in the ⁠White ​House and another appointed by Republican President George H.W. ​Bush — acknowledged that time was of the essence, since Missouri is scheduled to start sending ballots to military, overseas ​and absentee voters this month.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing strong pushback from critics after posting his condolences for the death of a jail inmate charged in the killing of an autistic man during an ambush.

“A person in City custody died yesterday evening following a court appearance in Queens,” Mamdani posted on X on Thursday. “Department of Correction staff performed CPR until emergency medical services arrived to take him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. I extend my condolences to his family. In line with standard practice, the DOC and its oversight partners will investigate the circumstances of his death.”

The vast majority of social media users who replied to the post took issue with Mamdani not providing more details about the alleged crime. The individual who died was Luis Alberto Lopez Castillo, who faced charges of murder, manslaughter and robbery related to the 2025 murder of 26-year-old Ron Marte, a man with special needs, the New York Post reported.

Prosecutors allege Castillo and his accomplice Axel Martinez ambushed Marte in the Bronx’s Starlight Park as he walked home from work, with Martinez shooting him in the chest while Castillo took his cellphone.

Mamdani’s critics highlighted the post as an example of the mayor showing more concern for suspected criminals than victims.

“Absolutely shameful…,” conservative influencer account Proud Elephant posted on X. “Just when you thought Mamdani couldn’t go any lower. Mamdani should do the right thing and resign from office in disgrace.”

Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s office for comment.

Mamdani has faced similar criticism before, including in August when he mourned the death of a man with 27 prior arrests who died in Rikers Island jail while facing charges for murdering a man with a meat cleaver in a Brooklyn laundromat.

Mamdani has been outspoken about his efforts to improve safety and living conditions across the jail system and has made several moves he says will accomplish that, including ending 12-hour shifts for correctional staff, addressing the practice of housing people of different ages together, moving to close Rikers Island, and strengthening oversight under the federal Nunez monitoring agreement.

His administration has begun transferring unused Rikers facilities out of the Department of Correction’s control and opened a 104-bed therapeutic housing unit at Bellevue Hospital to provide incarcerated people with specialized medical care.

New York City has been legally committed since 2019 to closing Rikers and replacing it with four smaller borough-based jails, a plan Mamdani has pledged to accelerate. Critics argue the move would leave the city with fewer jail cells and make it more difficult to tackle crime.

Lindsay Clancy’s attorney requests investigation into holdout juror, asks judge to dismiss criminal case

Lawyers for Lindsay Clancy have asked a judge to investigate the conduct of the lone juror who wanted to convict the mother from Massachusetts of murder in the deaths of her three children. Her lawyers have also asked the judge to dismiss the criminal case, claiming any successive trial would violate her double jeopardy rights.

In a motion filed Friday but made public Monday, Clancy’s lawyers asked the court to question the juror about his alleged use of a cellphone during deliberations, his truthfulness on a questionnaire that prospective jurors filled out before the trial began and his truthfulness when jurors were questioned by the judge a day before the trial ended.

The judge declared a mistrial Sept. 4 after the jury insisted it couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict, despite days of trying. Eleven of 12 jurors were ready to clear Clancy of criminal responsibility, with the majority feeling that she was in the grip of a rare condition called postpartum psychosis when she strangled her kids — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan. But one juror, Michael Desronvil, sided with the prosecutors, who had argued that Clancy knew what she was doing.

Among other things, Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, asked the court to obtain a record of any calls or texts Desronvil made between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on each day the jury deliberated. Phone use during deliberations is prohibited in the state.

Prosecutors have yet to say whether they plan on putting Clancy on trial again. She remains charged with murder and is in a psychiatric hospital until her case is resolved.

In another motion on Monday, Clancy’s lawyers asked the judge to take the unusual step of dismissing the criminal case, rather than putting on a new trial, on the grounds that a mistrial shouldn’t have been declared in the first place.

They argued that the judge should have replaced the holdout juror with an alternate during the deliberations after a jury foreperson complained to the judge that one juror was refusing to listen to the law on reasonable doubt.

“Ms. Clancy, like all criminal defendants, had a Constitutional right to have her fate decided by an impartial jury of her peers, faithfully applying the law as instructed rather than superimposing the juror’s own view of legal right and wrong, including the foundational principle that, absent proof beyond a reasonable doubt of her guilt, she must be acquitted,” her attorneys wrote in a motion to dismiss. “The multiple reports of a juror violating this bedrock principle, therefore, required a judicial inquiry sufficient to ascertain whether her right to an impartial jury was being violated.”

A spokesperson for Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz would not comment on the motions.

Desronvil hasn’t been accused of any wrongdoing in connection with his service on the jury, though other jurors complained that he was inflexible in his opinion that Clancy was guilty.

In a statement released by his lawyer last week, Edward Paltzik, Desronvil said he “didn’t have any doubts” that Clancy knew what she was doing when she killed her three children.

“As I tried to explain different possible theories during deliberation, I kept getting cut off as if I had doubts based on the evidence present,” he said in his statement.

“Based on all the physical evidence, key witnesses, and what the prosecution presents, I thought it was enough proof that she knew exactly what she was doing and planned,” the statement read.

Reddington’s motions come as Clancy’s ex-husband, Patrick Clancy, sat down for an interview with “60 Minutes” to talk about the illness he believes his then-wife was battling when she killed their three children.

Asked what ideas like accountability and justice mean in cases where an illness is involved, Patrick Clancy told correspondent Ross Douthat, “I think we can find a compassionate way to deal with these tragedies.”

“And that, that doesn’t mean no accountability,” Patrick Clancy said. “It just means that we recognize the suffering and the stigma, and we try to find a way to prevent this from happening in the future. That’s always how I’ve looked at it.”

根据《报告》，北京凭借完整的算力供给产业链、实力雄厚的模型与人工智能应用企业稳居首位；杭州依托AI创新企业集群和互联网产业基础，以及在大模型、具身智能等领域的持续发展，位居第二位；深圳作为AI服务器与算力芯片制造的重要基地，凭借深厚的算力供给产业基础，把握智能体爆发机遇，排名第三。

该报告由国际数据公司（IDC）联合浪潮信息在当天举行的AICC2026人工智能计算大会上发布。《报告》指出，智能体正在重塑算力基础设施，以乘数效应推动Token（词元）消耗激增，带动中国智能算力规模斜率大幅上调，算力跃升为与水利、电网、铁路等同等级的国家战略基础设施。

《报告》提到，智能体时代，AI基础设施正从规模扩张转向系统效率竞争。通过计算、存储、网络、数据中心、终端以及模型、调度和Token运营的全系统协同，竞争核心从“拥有多少算力”进一步转向“能够多高效地持续产出智能”。
