Minnesota Democratic Senate nominee Peggy Flanagan is pitching donors on the prospect of becoming the first Native American woman to serve in the U.S. Senate — drawing attention to one of her prominent endorsers, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, whose past claims of Native American identity became a yearslong political controversy.

“In almost 250 years, there’s never been a Native woman serving in the US Senate. It’s time to change that,” the email reads. “I am Ojibwe and a proud member of the White Earth Nation. My family is the Wolf Clan. The mission of my clan is to never leave anyone behind — and that’s been my guiding principle … Right now, there are no Native voices in the US Senate. If I win this race, we can change that.”

Throughout her career, Warren identified herself as a Native American, writing “American Indian” on her Texas bar-registration card and describing herself as a minority in the Association of American Law Schools directory. Since 2019, Warren has walked back her indigenous identity, clarifying that she is not a person of color nor a citizen of a tribe, and stating that she should not have identified herself as an American Indian.

“Wow, arrows fired,” podcast host Michael Duncan wrote of the email.

Warren supported Flanagan in Minnesota’s Democratic Senate primary.

“The Democrat nominee for Senate in Minnesota, Peggy Flanagan , just sent out a fundraising email on the DNC list that admits that Elizabeth Warren is NOT Native American,” conservative commentator Steve Guest posted to X, adding, “tough break for Fauxcahontas.”

“Has anybody checked on Elizabeth Warren?” the Republican Party quipped on X.

President Donald Trump famously lampooned Warren’s claimed ancestry by labeling her “Pocahontas.” The feud between the two culminated in Warren taking a genetic test in 2018, which found she was between 0.1% and 1.6% Native American.

“Excuse me? How dare she disrespect Elizabeth Warren like that?” libertarian commentator Brad Polumbo wrote, ironically.

Multiple X users posted AI-generated images of Warren in Native American garb looking dejected or angry in response to the fundraising email.

“Elizabeth Warren is doing a land acknowledgement on Flanagan’s head,” New York Post columnist Kirsten Fleming quipped.

Trump administration’s antisemitism lawsuit against Harvard dismissed by federal judge

A federal judge in Massachusetts on Thursday dismissed a Trump administration lawsuit against Harvard University that accused the school of failing to protect Jewish and Israeli students, finding the instances of alleged discrimination cited by the government were “too isolated and episodic” to support federal civil rights violations.

U.S. District Judge Richard Stearns in Massachusetts issued a four-page order granting Harvard’s motion to dismiss the suit.

“Without diminishing any concern arising from these occurrences, the court finds them, singly and collectively, to be too isolated and episodic to support a plausible inference that any institutionalized noncompliance with Title VI persists at Harvard to this day,” Stearns wrote.

Stearns wrote that the government’s complaint was “devoid of any factual allegations” that occurred after the Trump administration notified Harvard that it believed it had failed to comply with federal civil rights law, as is required before any legal action can be taken, and the other three instances in the complaint occurred between 2023 and 2024.

In March, the Justice Department filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the university, alleging that it violated the law by failing to protect the students after the Oct. 7, 2023, terror attack by Hamas, claiming Harvard’s “intentional conduct and its deliberate indifference to discriminatory harassment of Jewish and Israeli students and creation of a hostile educational environment.” The administration sought to recover billions of dollars in taxpayer money that Harvard has received from federal agencies.

In its lawsuit, the Justice Department alleged that Harvard defied federal law by discriminating against the students “without remorse” and the students were subjected to “severe, pervasive and objectively offensive harassment” on campus, including during protests against Israel, because of their race or national origin. The government alleged that Harvard knew about the harassment against the Jewish and Israeli students but did not stop it.

The lawsuit was one of many steps against the university that the Trump administration has taken since President Trump’s return to office, in addition to attempting to cancel billions of dollars in federal funding.

The Justice Department responded in a statement saying it “disagreed with the ruling and are assessing the next steps.” The statement also pointed to an ongoing antisemitism investigation by the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division.

Harvard and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Kennedy Center board votes to put Trump’s name back on outside of building, House Democrat says

    2026-08-13 3:44 PM EDT / CBS News

The Kennedy Center’s board of trustees voted Thursday to add President Trump’s name to the facade of the performing arts center, more than two months after a judge ordered its removal, according to a House Democrat who sits on the center’s board.

The board — which Mr. Trump filled with his allies — chose to add the phrase “Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump” to the end of the center’s formal name, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio and her lawyers said in a statement. Beatty said the board also voted to close the center for two years.

The vote marks a second attempt to put the president’s name on the outside of the building, after U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled in May that a decision to rename the center after both Kennedy and Mr. Trump violated the federal law that created the organization. Cooper also blocked the center from moving forward with a plan to close until 2028 for renovations, though the cultural institution had said it was still considering a partial or full closure.

Cooper issued his order in response to a lawsuit from Beatty. On Thursday, the congresswoman called the latest move “a transparent effort to circumvent the Court’s ruling, and flies in the face of the statutes that Congress passed.”

“Today’s vote is more of the same, and a show of blatant disrespect to the courts,” two of Beatty’s attorneys, Norm Eisen and Nathaniel Zelinsky, wrote in the statement. “The court already ruled against the board when it bowed to Trump’s demands. Now, the defendants must answer for their actions—again—in court.”

White House spokesperson Liz Huston said: “Under President Trump’s bold leadership, the Kennedy Center is on its way to becoming the finest cultural institution anywhere in the world.”

CBS News has reached out to the Kennedy Center for comment.

This is a breaking story; it will be updated.

Marni von Wilpert, a Democratic candidate for Congress in California’s 48th Congressional District, is holding a fundraiser at a venue known for sexually suggestive branding and LGBTQ nightlife on Thursday evening.

The San Diego restaurant and nightclub, called the Gossip Grill, offers a series of adult-themed specials and events such as “Fi—r me Fridays,” “Girls, Gays and Theys Sundays” and “Cabaret Drag Brunch Pride Extravaganza.”

It also offers menu items like the “Foreplay” and the “happy ending.”

Marni von Wilpert poses for a photo. Wilpert is a Democratic candidate for Congress in California’s 48th district.(Wilpert for Congress)

The upcoming event underscores Wilpert’s connection to the LGBTQ community and the attention she’s given the issue during her congressional campaign since she came out as bisexual a few years ago.

To one Republican observer, it’s a set of priorities that places an undue emphasis on sexuality.

“Out of touch Marni von Wilpert found the perfect headquarters for her radical campaign,” Christian Martinez, a spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“Her perverted agenda pushes hormone treatments on kids, shuts parents out and puts sexual content in front of young children. That dangerous agenda belongs in a nightclub, not Congress.”

Wilpert lists “LGBTQ+ Rights” among her top priorities on her campaign website — alongside other priorities like restructuring Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and penalties for companies with low wages.

On her website, she commits to making the topic a legislative focus at the federal level.

“In Congress, she will work to pass the Equality Act so the protections that Californians enjoy are guaranteed nationwide. She will face the attacks head-on, from bans on gender-affirming care to efforts to silence LGBTQ+ students in our schools,” the website reads.

In the past, Wilpert has helped spearhead efforts to keep Pride-related materials in San Diego public libraries.

After an activist removed almost every gender-orientation-related book from a library in Rancho Peñasquitos in 2023, threatening to keep them until the county took down a Pride display, Wilpert led the charge to replace the books. Wilpert, then a city council member, also pressed to expand Pride displays in 36 San Diego public libraries.

“I’m frankly shocked by this because eliminating LGBTQ content from libraries is what you might expect in Mississippi, but never here in San Diego,” she told The San Diego Tribune.

“Denying others the right to read LGBTQ-affirming books is just another way of telling LGBTQ people they don’t belong — and that’s dead wrong.

Minnesota fraud scandal will haunt Flanagan in high-stakes Senate race, top House Republican warns

    August 13, 2026 8:00am EDT / Fox News

Emmer, the highest-ranking Minnesotan in Congress, says Peggy Flanagan was ‘front and center’ during the Walz admin

    By Elizabeth Elkind, Fox News

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer spoke with Fox News Digital about the race for the open Senate seat in Minnesota.

The welfare fraud scandal that rocked Minnesota’s state government late last year will now be a central issue in the race for its open Senate seat, the top Minnesotan in Congress said.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., is predicting that the rampant fraud that occurred under Gov. Tim Walz’s administration will now sandbag the campaign of his top deputy, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, who won the Democratic nomination on Tuesday night.

“I think fraud is going to be the theme all the way through. Peggy Flanagan was there every step of the way,” Emmer told Fox News Digital. “She is going be tainted by Tim Walz’s disgusting reputation.”

PEGGY FLANAGAN WAS MINNESOTA’S NO 2 OFFICIAL AS MASSIVE FRAUD SCANDAL EXPLODED UNDER STATE’S WATCH

He argued that both Walz and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison would be a “weight” on Flanagan’s candidacy.

Fraudsters managed to swindle Minnesota’s state welfare programs out of millions of dollars’ worth of taxpayer funds dating back to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It kicked off with the nonprofit Feeding Our Future, whose leaders submitted falsified data to the state government while claiming to be working with schools, restaurants and caterers to feed Minnesota students.

The state government flagged suspicions to the FBI in 2021. Since then, roughly 80 defendants, including founder Aimee Bock, have been indicted. Bock was sentenced to 500 months in prison earlier this year for a scheme that prosecutors say affected some $250 million in taxpayer funds.

Since then, federal officials have claimed that programs, including those that deal with childcare, helping children with autism and low-income housing, have been subject to fraudulent waste of taxpayer dollars.

Federal officials accused state Democrats of not doing enough to weed out fraud. But Walz and Ellison have both accused Republicans of overrepresenting the size of the scandal as a political attack, though the scrutiny forced Walz to drop his re-election bid for another term as governor.

The topic came up in a recent debate between Flanagan and her primary opponent, moderate Rep. Angie Craig, D-Minn. Craig argued Flanagan’s role in state government at the time would make her vulnerable to attacks.

“The lieutenant governor, even as we sit here today, continues to take absolutely no accountability for any of the fraud issues, and she continues to blame the governor,” Craig said, according to MPR News. “And I’m going to be honest: It’s pissing me off.”

TAFOYA MAKES ‘COMMON SENSE’ PITCH TO DISAFFECTED DEMOCRATS AS SHE VOWS TO FIGHT MINNESOTA’S ‘SOCIALIST LURCH’

And Emmer — unsurprisingly as one of Walz’s biggest critics — agreed.

“Fraud, incompetence and corruption — that is what the Walz administration has been known for. And she’s been front and center in the Walz administration,” Emmer said. “She is right in the center of one of the biggest fraud scandals in America, right here in Minnesota.”

The House majority whip also accused Flanagan of embracing far-left policy positions that are further left than most Minnesotans.

“She’s a Marxist communist nut bag from Minneapolis,” Emmer said. “There is a treasure trove of wackadoodle, just out-of-touch statements, which we don’t have to get into today, but you’re going to see those be resurrected.”

    • Summary
    • Weekly jobless claims increase 9,000 to 209,000
    • Continuing claims decline 22,000 to 1.777 million
    • Producer Price Index unchanged in July; rises 4.7% year-on-year

WASHINGTON, Aug 13 (Reuters) – U.S. producer prices were unchanged in July as goods prices fell and the cost of services increased marginally, bolstering financial market expectations that the Federal Reserve could keep interest rates unchanged next month.

The report from the Labor Department on Thursday followed news on Wednesday of mild consumer inflation last month. The data led economists to also expect moderate readings in the Personal Consumption Expenditures price indexes in July.

The U.S. central bank tracks the PCE inflation measures for its 2% target. Financial markets had been pricing in a rate hike, but the odds have diminished considerably following last week’s employment report showing unexpected job losses in July.

“The absence of spillovers from higher energy prices into services prices, together with a fragile labor market, should ensure that the Fed keeps policy unchanged for the remainder of the year,” said Samuel Tombs, chief U.S. economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.

The flat reading in the Producer Price Index for final demand last month followed a revised 0.1% drop in June, the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics said. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the PPI rebounding 0.2% following a previously reported 0.3% decline in June.

In the 12 months through July, the PPI increased 4.7% after advancing 5.5% in June. Most of the PPI data are collected early in the month, meaning that sharp oil price increases toward the end of July were probably not reflected in the PPI. As such, economists expected higher PPI readings in August, and some saw a rate hike this year as still on the table.

Goods prices dropped 0.7% after sliding 1.4% in June. Energy prices decreased 3.1%, with wholesale gasoline prices falling 5.7%. Food prices declined 0.9%. Excluding the volatile food and energy components, goods prices rose 0.1%.

The cost of services increased 0.2% after climbing 0.5%. They were lifted by a 6.5% jump in portfolio management fees, reflecting a stock market rally. That was partially offset ‌by a 3.4% decrease in airline fares. Hospital outpatient prices increased 0.9%. Hotel and motel room prices fell 0.2%.

These are among the components that go into the calculation of the PCE inflation measures. Economists estimated that the PCE price index excluding food and energy components rose 0.2% in July after gaining 0.1% in June.

    MODERATE CORE PCE INFLATION ANTICIPATED

The so-called core PCE inflation was forecast advancing 3.3% year-on-year, matching June’s rise.

Financial markets were pricing in a roughly 67.6% chance of the Fed keeping its benchmark overnight interest rate in the 3.50%-3.75% range at its September 15-16 policy meeting, CME’s FedWatch Tool showed.

The odds of a rate hike were at 32.4% down from 40.6% on Wednesday and 55% a week ago. The dollar slipped against a basket of currencies. U.S. Treasury yields fell.

Despite last month’s job losses, the labor market appears to be stable, with no sign of a rise in layoffs. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 9,000 to a seasonally adjusted 209,000 for the week ended August 8, the Labor Department said in a separate report.

Economists had forecast 202,000 claims for the latest week. Job growth has a tendency to slow during summer, a phenomenon that economists attributed to difficulties adjusting the data for seasonal fluctuations related to the timing of the end of the school year.

Labor market stability was also evident in an NFIB survey this week, which showed a measure of small business employment rebounded in July after four straight monthly declines.

The number of people receiving unemployment benefits after an initial week of aid, a proxy for hiring, fell 22,000 to a seasonally adjusted 1.777 million during the week ended August 1, the claims report showed.
