Kennedy Center says it’s still weighing whether to carry out a “partial closure”

    June 19, 2026 / 9:45 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — The Trump administration told a federal judge late Friday that the Kennedy Center is still weighing whether to offer a full slate of performances or more limited programming over the coming months, as the government grapples with a court order requiring the institution to stay open.

U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper last month blocked the Trump administration from closing the Kennedy Center until 2028 for renovations, following a lawsuit from Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio. He also reversed an attempt to rename the center to add President Trump’s name.

Cooper had directed the administration to detail the status of plans for its construction project, board actions related to the renovations and other “pertinent” developments by Friday. The judge also said the Trump administration had to explain plans for public access and ongoing programming, activities and operations after July 5, the start date of its previously planned closure.

In a filing on Friday, Kennedy Center Executive Director Matt Floca said the center’s board plans to meet in mid-July to decide between three options: a “full closure” with no public programs so the organization can complete repairs, a “partial closure” with “some continued public access and limited programming,” or a “coordinated series of phased closures” with more programming.

Attorneys for the Justice Department asked Cooper for more time to respond to Beatty, saying the Kennedy Center is still deciding how to proceed. They also suggested that both parties file a joint status report two weeks after the Kennedy Center’s next board meeting.

The government’s lawyers wrote that the center is still planning to carry out capital repairs on the building. They said Cooper’s order “did not affirmatively require the Board to reschedule programming that had previously been cancelled or to seek new programming,” and noted that Cooper did not necessarily block the center from closing for renovations altogether.

In the same Friday night filing, Beatty’s lawyers pushed back against the Justice Department, accusing government officials of “implementing their shutdown decision by inertia” and seeking to “turn the Kennedy Center into a lifeless husk.”

The government, the lawmaker’s attorneys argued, had “gutted” the Kennedy Center’s programming and is now failing to take “obvious steps” to restore it. One example they cited is “Shear Madness,” a popular interactive play that ended its decades-long run at the Kennedy Center earlier this month, even though the center “could have potentially attempted to ensure” it stuck around.

“To be clear, again, Plaintiff is not asking the Court to pick and choose what programming Defendants present, or to micromanage operations,” Beatty’s lawyers wrote. “Defendants must do something, however, to ensure there are meaningful operations come July 5, 2026, in order to comply with the plain terms of the preliminary injunction, and they must do so in good faith.”

Beatty’s lawyers asked Cooper to order the government to provide weekly updates about “the concrete steps taken to resume programming.” They also suggested the parties begin discussing a schedule for discovery in the lawsuit.

Beyond the center’s programming, the name of the Kennedy Center has drawn scrutiny over the last week. Mr. Trump’s name was removed from the facade of the Kennedy Center last week to comply with Cooper’s order, after federal courts rejected 11th-hour efforts to allow it to remain affixed to the building while legal proceedings continued.

The Trump administration confirmed in a court filing on June 13 that it had taken down signage bearing the president’s name, updated the Kennedy Center’s website to remove references to Mr. Trump, and had withdrawn relevant trademark applications that included the joint name. References to the president were also stripped from email signatures and communications, as well as papers like brochures, press releases and contracts.

Still, the bulk of the building’s name remained blocked from public view, as photos taken Friday show a tarp concealing the area of the facade where Mr. Trump’s name was.

Beatty’s legal team on Friday castigated the Kennedy Center for leaving the tarp up.

“In addition to raising concerns about compliance, willfully sabotaging Kennedy Center’s iconic façade to assuage Defendants’ vanity or massage broken egos is a clear breach of fiduciary duty,” they wrote.

The changes to the Kennedy Center came in response to a decision late last month from Cooper that blocked the performing arts center’s temporary closure and ordered Mr. Trump’s name to be removed from its title, physical and digital signage, and official materials.

Cooper found that the Kennedy Center’s Board of Trustees, composed largely of administration officials and allies of Mr. Trump, overstepped its authority when it unilaterally renamed the institute after the president.

The judge also said that when the board ratified Mr. Trump’s decision to close the Kennedy Center for two years for renovations, it was “derelict in discharging the full range of its responsibilities to the center.”

Cooper said planned repair work on the institute can continue, and he did not foreclose the Kennedy Center’s closure in the future. Instead, he said any decision by the board should come after “independent balancing” of its “multiple obligations to the center in a prudent fashion.”

Mr. Trump’s focus on the Kennedy Center began shortly after he took office for his second administration. The president replaced several members of the board with White House advisers, family members of administration officials, donors and longtime supporters.

The board then unanimously elected Mr. Trump as its new chair. It voted to change the institution’s name to The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts in December.

But legal scholars said any change to the center’s name could not be done unilaterally by the board and instead required congressional action. Cooper, in his decision, agreed, writing: “Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it.”

Mr. Trump initially indicated he would adhere to Cooper’s decision, writing on Truth Social late last month that he would work “with Congress to transfer this failing Institution back to them so they can make a determination as to what to do with it.” But as Cooper’s deadline for his name to be stripped from the building neared, the Justice Department asked the federal appeals court in Washington to pause the district court’s order.

A panel of judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit denied the request, clearing the way for the president’s name to be taken down.

拉恩得到了MAHA(与特朗普时期卫生部长小罗伯特·F·肯尼迪结盟的“让美国再次健康”运动)的政治派系,以及由已故查理·柯克联合创立的强大保守组织“转折点美国”的支持。

Double endorsement drama: Trump backs second candidate in red state’s GOP gubernatorial runoff

The president already endorsed Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette before giving 11th-hour support to Attorney General Alan Wilson

President Donald Trump is making an 11th-hour endorsement in the final stretch ahead of Tuesday’s high-profile Republican gubernatorial runoff in solidly red South Carolina, saying he “can’t hurt one of them by only Endorsing the other.”

Trump on Friday took to Truth Social to say that he was supporting longtime South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson and Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette in the battle for the GOP nomination in the race to succeed term-limited Republican Gov. Henry McMaster.

“I can’t hurt one of them by only Endorsing the other, so, therefore, I am going to Endorse, for Governor of South Carolina, both Pam Evette and Alan Wilson!” Trump wrote, adding: “With either one you can’t go wrong.”

The endorsement of Wilson appears to be a move by Trump to hedge his bets, because Trump is already backing Evette, who is also supported by McMaster, a longtime top ally of the president.

The South Carolina runoff had been viewed as the latest test of Trump’s immense grip over the GOP and the power of his endorsements in Republican nominating contests.

And his decision to back both Evette and Wilson isn’t the first time he’s made dual endorsements in the same Republican race. He was backing both Gina Swoboda and Jay Feely in next month’s Republican primary in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District before Swoboda dropped out of the congressional race to run for secretary of state.

Most famously, Trump endorsed “ERIC” in the 2022 GOP Senate primary in Missouri, where the two major candidates were Eric Schmitt and Eric Greitens. Both candidates claimed the endorsement, with Schmitt ultimately winning the nomination.

In South Carolina, Trump endorsed Evette late last month, a week and a half before the gubernatorial primary.

Evette finished on top of a crowded field of contenders in the primary election, with Wilson second. The field also included Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, and multimillionaire businessman Rom Reddy. Since no candidate won a majority of the vote, as the top two finishers, Evette and Wilson advanced to the June 23 runoff.

Mace and Norman endorsed Wilson after failing to advance to the runoff. And Wilson was also backed a week ago by Sen. Ted Cruz, the conservative firebrand from Texas.

The runoff between Evette and Wilson has become combustible, and in Tuesday’s final debate both candidates launched personal attacks and accused each other of lying and misrepresenting their records.

Wilson has worked to contrast his tenure as attorney general with what he’s argued is Evette’s largely ceremonial role as lieutenant governor. And he has spotlighted his experience as a combat veteran, prosecutor, and the state’s top law enforcement official.

Evette has showcased herself as an outsider and a Trump-endorsed businesswoman, while casting Wilson as a career politician.

Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, who is supporting Wilson and has helped with fundraising, made calls on behalf of Wilson and encouraged the president’s endorsement of the state attorney general, a source familiar told Fox News Digital.

It’s been 28 years since a Democrat won a gubernatorial election in South Carolina, and the winner of the GOP runoff will be considered the clear favorite in the general election against Democratic nominee Jermaine Johnson, a state representative.

The brute force of the president’s endorsement power has been on display in GOP primaries over the past two months, with his candidates ousting incumbents he targeted in showdowns in Indiana, Louisiana, Kentucky and Texas that grabbed plenty of national attention.

But Trump’s endorsement streak in statewide and congressional Republican primaries was snapped three weeks ago when his last minute endorsement of Republican Rep. Randy Feenstra of Iowa in the race to succeed retiring GOP Gov. Kim Reynolds wasn’t enough to propel the three-term congressman to victory.

Feenstra was narrowly edged by Zach Lahn, a businessman, farmer and former political strategist who was backed by the political wings of MAHA — the acronym for the Make America Healthy Again movement aligned with Trump Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — and Turning Point USA, the powerful conservative organization co-founded by the late Charlie Kirk.

Trump rebounded a week later, as Evette finished first in the GOP gubernatorial primary and longtime Trump ally Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina won a majority of the vote in the Republican Senate primary, and avoided a runoff.

Graham, who was endorsed by Trump, was facing primary challenges from five candidates, including conservative businessman Mark Lynch, who took aim at the senator over his support for the war in Iran. Lynch was backed by some MAGA leaders who have been critical of the president.

And a couple of days ago, Trump-backed candidates won two of the three top races in Georgia and Alabama, with the one setback coming against a billionaire businessman who shelled out over $100 million of his own money to boost his campaign.

Rep. Barry Moore, a House Freedom Caucus member and longtime Trump supporter who was endorsed by the president, comfortably defeated rival Jared Hudson, a former Navy SEAL sniper who was supported by some top names on the right, in solidly red Alabama’s GOP Senate runoff.

In battleground Georgia’s Republican Senate runoff, an 11th hour endorsement by Trump this past weekend helped boost Rep. Mike Collins, a MAGA champion, to victory over former college football coach Derek Dooley, who was backed by popular conservative Gov. Brian Kemp.

Collins will face Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in the general election in a race that’s among a handful that will likely decide if the GOP holds its slim majority in the chamber in the midterms.

Jones regularly showcased his Trump endorsement, but Jackson, who launched his bid in February long after the president had endorsed Jones, repeatedly said that Trump had inspired him to run.

But in Georgia’s GOP gubernatorial runoff, the candidate Trump backed, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, who was also endorsed by Kemp this past weekend, was defeated by Rick Jackson, who ran as an outsider.

A Trump political operative, pointing to Tuesday’s loss by Trump-backed Jones, noted that “Rick Jackson set a record for spending in a statewide Republican primary. He spent Tom Steyer level money in a state a fraction of the size of California. That’s going to have an impact.”

And the operative, who asked to remain anonymous to speak more freely, also emphasized that “Rick bearhugged Trump. All of his ads and material was about how he’s going to be Trump’s favorite governor. So the race was not really a referendum on Trump.”

A transgender former New Hampshire state representative will spend more than three decades in federal prison after admitting to receiving nude photos of children at a Massachusetts daycare.

Stacie Marie Laughton, 41, of Nashua was sentenced to more than 33 years behind bars after pleading guilty to sexual exploitation of children, according to a report from local outlet WCVB.

Laughton received the explicit images from his former intimate partner, Lindsay Groves, 40, of Hudson, New Hampshire, who was sentenced earlier this month to 22 years in prison, according to the report.

Groves, who previously pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual exploitation of children and one count of distribution of child pornography, was employed at the Creative Minds daycare in neighboring Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.

Authorities said that between May 2022 and June 2023, Groves took multiple photos of prepubescent children in a private bathroom during routine diaper and pull-up changes prior to nap time.

Groves then sent the photos to Laughton via text message, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

A forensic review of Laughton and Groves’ cellphones uncovered more than 10,000 text messages sent between the two over a one-month period in 2023.

Court documents revealed the messages included discussions about and transfers of explicit images of children, including victims as young as 3 to 5 years old.

    image

U.S. clinches spot in World Cup knockout round with dominant 2-0 win over Australia

    June 19, 2026 / 5:04 PM EDT / CBS/AP

In front of a roaring Seattle crowd, the U.S. men’s soccer team on Friday defeated Australia 2-0 in its second World Cup match, clinching a spot in the Round of 32 in the process.

Despite missing star attacking midfielder Christian Pulisic to a calf injury, the U.S. put on a spectacular performance against a gritty Australian team.

The U.S. showed that its 4-1 win over Paraguay in its opener was no fluke. From the first whistle, the U.S. took control of the game, dominating possession and putting the Socceroos on their heels.

The U.S. opened the scoring in the 11th minute with an own goal from Australia’s Cameron Burgess, who mishandled a brilliant run and pass from U.S. forward Folarin Balogun into his own net.

“I want to be dangerous, I want to create opportunities,” Balogun said after the match. “It might not always be myself that scores, but if I can force an error that gives us the lead, then for me it’s like a goal as well. It was a special start to the game to give us the momentum.”

U.S. right back Alex Freeman — the youngest player on the team at 21 and son of Super Bowl champion Antonio Freeman — doubled the score in the 43rd minute when he put in a header off a deflected shot that rebounded off Australia’s defensive line for his first career World Cup.

The win puts the U.S. at the top of Group G with 6 points. It faces Turkey in its final match on June 25 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

“C.P. is a fantastic player — the quality and the leadership that he gives us,” said Balogun, who scored two goals in the victory over Paraguay on June 12. “We didn’t have him today, but I think you saw we’re still capable to go out there and get a result and put up a performance.”

Australia was never able to recreate the magic of its World Cup opener last week, when it shocked Turkey 2-0. Sitting on 3 points, it will likely need at least a tie in its final group match against Paraguay to ensure it goes through to the next round.

Prior to the match, U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino said he wanted his team to match Australia’s intensity.

“I think we need to play on the edge of the line,” Pochettino said, “with not crossing the lines of the rules.”

The last time the Americans served as World Cup hosts in 1994, they advanced by being one of the best third-place teams. They then lost to eventual champion Brazil in their next match, which was in the round of 16.

Freeman, meanwhile, spent much of the last two years vying for a spot on the U.S. roster. He was a starter for Orlando City of Major League Soccer, but had to battle with more experienced defenders to get selected. A few months before the World Cup, he gambled on himself.

In January, Freeman accepted a move to Villarreal of La Liga, accepting a smaller role than what he enjoyed with Orlando.

Two months earlier, Freeman impressed Pochettino in his 13th international appearance, scoring two goals against Uruguay in a 5-1 victory on Nov. 18.

He made an immediate impact in the World Cup, playing all 90 minutes in the U.S. opener against Paraguay. Freeman assisted on Gio Reyna’s extra-time goal in the 4-1 victory.

George W. Bush gifts Michelle Obama a tin of Altoids at Obama Center opening in an ode to their friendship

The friendship between former first lady Michelle Obama and former President George W. Bush was on display again Thursday at the Obama Presidential Center’s opening ceremony in Chicago.

Ahead of the ceremony, Bush gifted Obama a tin of Altoids in a callback to one of their viral moments at the funeral for Sen. John McCain in 2018. The former president was caught sneaking Obama what was later said to be a cough drop during the funeral.

“President Bush and I, we are forever seatmates because of protocol, that’s how we sit at all the official functions, so he is my partner in crime at every major thing where all the ‘formers’ gather,” Obama said on “Today” after the moment caught the public’s attention. “It was a simple gesture. He was getting a cough drop from Laura, and I looked over and I said, ‘Hand me a cough drop.’”

Obama called Bush “a wonderful man” and “a funny man.”

“I love him to death,” she said.

Months later, Bush recreated the moment at the funeral for his father, appearing to slip Obama a piece of candy or a mint when they shook hands.

In a recent interview with his daughter, Jenna Bush Hager, Bush referred to what he handed Obama at McCain’s funeral as an Altoid.

But whether it was a cough drop or a mint, the sentiment remains.

“It turns out the country is starved to see a White center-right Republican and an African American center-left Democrat having fun and being able to converse, not as political figures, but as citizens,” Bush said.

And the gift on Thursday appeared to be well received, with Obama smiling and holding up the tin in a photo with Bush.

Bush and his wife, former first lady Laura Bush, along with the other “formers” — Bill and Hillary Clinton and Joe and Jill Biden — sat with the Obamas on the stage at the presidential center ceremony Thursday.
