Trump allies defend him to Israelis anxious over Iran deal

    • Summary
    • Trump allies rally support for U.S. president in Jerusalem
    • Ambassador Huckabee acknowledges enormous anxiety about US-Israel ties
    • Pew Research Center poll shows 57% of Republicans aged 18-49 view Israel unfavourably

JERUSALEM, June 22 (Reuters) – American allies of President Donald Trump this week defended him to an Israeli public anxious about a U.S. interim deal with Iran and White House criticism that together appeared to signal fissures in Israel’s decades-old alliance with Washington.

The U.S.-Israeli relationship has been on a roller coaster, from the early confidence they shared after their joint attack on Iran to public disagreements between Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over how to end the four-month-old war.

Netanyahu and many other Israelis see a risk that Trump’s memorandum of understanding with Iran will empower a state they regard as their deadliest enemy and constrict their ability to respond to threats from Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.

They sense the U.S. alliance – long the bedrock of Israel’s strategic approach – is under strain as opinion polls show Americans increasingly unhappy with Israel and their strongest champion in Washington appears to be turning away.

“The United States and Israel have an unbreakable bond,” Mike Huckabee, the U.S. ambassador to Israel, said on Sunday after acknowledging there was an “enormous level of anxiety about the relationship.”

He spoke at a foreign policy conference in Jerusalem where concerns about the state of the U.S.-Israel alliance dominated many of the discussions.

Mark Levin, a conservative Fox News commentator and longtime Trump supporter who has broken with the president over the Iran deal, told the audience that while he did not like the agreement and believed that the “Iranian regime” had to be destroyed, he nevertheless praised Trump for what he said was the president’s support for liberty, religious freedom, Christianity and Judaism.

ISRAELIS WORRY OVER CRITICISM FROM REPUBLICANS

Alongside their concerns about the wording of the Iran deal, Israelis worry about Trump’s insistence on Israel agreeing a ceasefire with Hezbollah in Lebanon and his language responding to Netanyahu’s resistance to those agreements.

In recent weeks Trump has called Netanyahu “fucking crazy,” lectured Israel that “you don’t have to knock an apartment down every time you’re looking for somebody” and publicly pondered asking Syria to replace Israeli troops in Lebanon.

Vice President JD Vance also struck a more critical tone, saying “Trump is the only head of state in the entire world who is sympathetic to the nation of Israel at this moment in time,” adding later that not all criticism of Israel should be dismissed as antisemitism.

The fact such sharp views are emanating from Trump’s Republican Party is especially worrying for many Israelis, with U.S. Democrats far more vocally critical of Israel than in previous years.

Sid Rosenberg, a prominent conservative New York radio host, told Israelis that for all their concerns about Trump, he was the best option for them. “You could have JD Vance. Good luck with that,” he said, after acknowledging that “a lot of people in Israel are very, very upset” with the president.

While large majorities of Republicans 50 and older view Israel positively, younger conservative Americans have grown more critical, a Pew Research Center poll from late March showed. Some 57% of Republicans aged 18-49 have an unfavourable opinion of Israel, up from 50% a year previously.

Many Americans, including prominent Democratic politicians, were outraged by the scale of death and devastation in Israel’s military campaign in Gaza after the deadly Hamas attack of October 7, 2023, on Israeli communities and the taking of hostages.

Israel has also faced criticism over the joint decision to launch the war on Iran, a conflict that is deeply unpopular in the United States, including among Trump’s conservative base.

Victoria Coates, vice president at the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank and Trump’s deputy national security adviser during his first term, suggested on Monday that the U.S.-Israeli relationship was strained but expressed confidence that the leaders of both countries would bring it “back on track”.

A day earlier, speaking at the conference, she had said that recent days had been “challenging for all of us, to put it mildly,” but that there had been plenty of “great and good things” in Trump’s second term “for which we can and should be grateful.”

NETANYAHU NOT CONCERNED BY TRUMP COMMENTS, OFFICIALS SAY

Until recently, Trump had been seen in Israel as its strongest-ever White House ally after his decision in his first term to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights and his leading diplomatic role securing the release of hostages last year.

Two Israeli officials familiar with Netanyahu’s thinking said the prime minister was not concerned that comments by Trump and Vance indicated any meaningful U.S. policy changes such as slower arms deliveries.

Netanyahu believed the comments might be partly geared towards assuaging voters ahead of U.S. midterm elections in November amid growing frustration over Israel and the war, said the officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The anxiety in Israel has led some prominent figures to say it is time for the country to envisage a future without strong U.S. support and to further build up its own military and technological capabilities.

Ohad Tal, chair of the U.S.-Israel caucus in Israel’s parliament the Knesset, said Israelis needed to prepare for the day when there is a less supportive U.S. president “and this is why we have to be much more independent and we have to forge new alliances.”

    2026-06-22T17:38:12.535Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/22/politics/tim-walz-justice-department-subpoena-thrown-out

Judge says Trump DOJ subpoenas of Tim Walz and other Democrats are unconstitutional

    2026-06-22T17:38:12.535Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/22/politics/tim-walz-justice-department-subpoena-thrown-out

    • A federal judge blocked Justice Department subpoenas targeting Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and other Democratic officials in the agency’s probe of immigration enforcement resistance.
    • District Judge Patrick Schiltz ruled the subpoenas were unconstitutional efforts to harass political opponents rather than conduct a legitimate criminal investigation.
    • The decision voids demands for records from Walz, state and local officials who publicly opposed the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Minneapolis.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

A federal judge on Monday blocked the Justice Department from forcing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and other officials to turn over records in its probe of Democratic resistance to the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, calling the move a retaliatory effort to “harass political opponents.”

In a 30-page ruling, district Judge Patrick Schiltz found that subpoenas were “part of an unconstitutional effort to coerce Minnesota officials into assisting the federal government with enforcing civil immigration laws and to harass and retaliate against them for failing to do so.”

The order is yet another rebuke of the Justice Department by a federal judge over the agency’s efforts to investigate or prosecute President Donald Trump’s personal and political enemies.

“The Department is not conducting a criminal investigation, but is instead using the grand jury process for other (unlawful) purposes,” wrote Schiltz, an appointee of former President George W. Bush.

His ruling voids subpoenas sent to the offices of Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her, and officials in Ramsey and Hennepin counties. The subpoenas had sought records and information on whether Democratic officials obstructed immigration enforcement through their public resistance to the administration’s deployment of thousands of agents to detain migrants accused of living in the US illegally.

Over the winter, the Trump administration conducted a monthslong federal immigration surge in the Twin Cities, which set off mass protests and led to the fatal shootings of two US citizens. More than 4,000 undocumented immigrants were arrested in Minnesota, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

State and local officials publicly decried the effort, and Trump in turn accused those officials of fueling violent protests.

Schiltz said there is “overwhelming” evidence that the subpoenas were issued only to pressure the state officials, noting that senior Justice Department officials have repeatedly threatened to punish states that have so-called sanctuary policies. And, he said, the department “has struggled-without success-to identify a single plausible investigatory justification for the subpoenas.”

Schiltz also noted the Constitution expressly allows Minnesota to decide not to devote its resources to enforcing federal immigration law.

The Justice Department said in a Monday statement it will continue to review what it calls “obstruction” of federal investigations.

“The Department takes the unlawful obstruction of federal law enforcement operations extremely seriously and will continue to act in full compliance with the law to investigate these matters,” the DOJ said.

Walz hailed the ruling in a statement posted on X, saying the investigation into him “was politically motivated, unconstitutional and meritless.”

“The U.S. Justice Department is pursuing criminal investigations into the President’s political opponents,” Walz said. “This case was just one example of that, but we are seeing daily reminders of this administration’s lawlessness — in Minnesota and around the country. We all must continue to seek justice and uphold the rule of law.

Frey also lauded the ruling, saying that “subpoenaing political opponents because they spoke on behalf of their constituents violates the core tenets of our democracy and human decency.”

Trump expected to meet with defense contractors Wednesday amid Iran peace talks

President Trump is expected to meet with top executives from the largest U.S. defense contractors on Wednesday, according to multiple sources familiar with the meeting. The meeting comes as his administration is engaged in ongoing peace talks with Iran.

Wednesday’s gathering follows up on a March 6 White House meeting with the leaders of Lockheed Martin, Raytheon parent RTX, BAE Systems, Boeing, Honeywell Aerospace, L3Harris and Northrop Grumman.

The Trump administration has been ratcheting up pressure on defense contractors to prioritize production and American manufacturing capabilities over shareholder payouts.

Most of the defense industry received the message loud and clear from the president to deliver on existing contracts and increase and speed production to support the Department of War, said a source familiar with the meetings.

Mr. Trump issued an executive order in January that sought to curtail defense contractor dividend payments and stock buybacks. Congress is considering codifying a similar provision into law.

Northrop Grumman and RTX increased their shareholder dividends by about 7% in May. Though RTX and Lockheed Martin have halted stock buybacks, Northrop Grumman offered investors a relatively small buyback earlier this year. Boeing hasn’t participated in share buybacks or issued a dividend since 2020.

The source familiar with the meetings said the president will want answers from Northrop on Wednesday.

Earlier this month, President Trump invoked the Defense Production Act to ramp up weapons production due to “systemic constraints in the munitions industrial base, including limited production capacity, fragile supply chains, long-lead dependencies, and related production bottlenecks.”

Such shortfalls, the president wrote in a June 11 memo to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, “may impair the ability of the United States to produce, sustain, and expand the availability of munitions, missiles, and equipment required for the national defense.”

Maryland’s Democratic leadership is facing criticism after it took state officials more than two years to remove a prominent illegal immigrant from its voter rolls. Amidst the drama, one GOP lawmaker remarked, “This is exactly why Marylanders have lost faith in our elections.”

According to the Maryland Freedom Caucus, which consists of conservative lawmakers in the state General Assembly, Ian Andre Roberts, a Guyanese national illegally present in the U.S., was “quietly” removed from Maryland’s voter rolls. This comes after Roberts was sentenced on May 29 to two years in federal prison and three years of supervised release for possession of a gun as an illegal immigrant and for falsely claiming to be a U.S. citizen on employment paperwork.

Fox News Digital reported last September that, despite illegally residing in the U.S., Roberts was working as the superintendent of the Des Moines Public Schools in Iowa. Maryland Republicans blew the whistle on the fact that he was also registered as an active Democratic voter in Maryland.

The Maryland Freedom Caucus posted on X that “9 months after it was discovered that a superintendent of a large school district was not only a noncitizen with a final deportation order, but also had been illicitly registered to vote in Maryland, Ian Roberts has finally – and quietly – been removed from the active voter registration list in our state.”

The caucus wrote that “Ian Roberts is the perfect symbol of everything wrong with the Maryland State Board of Elections,” adding that “it practically took an act of God to get him removed from the rolls.”

In addition to the 2024 final order of removal against him, Roberts also faced charges in 2020 for second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and other weapons charges, as well as a 2022 conviction for unlawful possession of a loaded gun in Pennsylvania. He was arrested by ICE last September. Agents arrested Roberts after he attempted to run and was found hiding in the brush. The vehicle Roberts was driving contained $3,000 in cash, a fixed-blade hunting knife and a loaded Glock 19 handgun, ICE said.

Republican state Delegate Matt Morgan, who is chair of the Maryland House Freedom Caucus, told Fox News Digital that Roberts’ case “is exactly why Marylanders have lost faith in our elections.”

“The fact that it took this long for the state to remove him proves what we’ve been saying: the system is broken, and one-party Democrat control in Annapolis [the Maryland state capital] has zero interest in basic safeguards,” he said.

The Maryland State Board of Elections previously said Roberts did not vote in elections. However, when Roberts’ case first surfaced last year, Morgan said that the illegal immigrant’s registration meant that he was eligible to vote in all federal, state and local elections despite not being a U.S. citizen, and also despite likely not having lived in Maryland for the past decade.

Morgan asserted that “this isn’t incompetence” but instead “the predictable result of sanctuary policies and willful neglect of election integrity.”

“I demand full audits, real cooperation with federal authorities, and immediate reforms so citizens can once again trust our elections,” said Morgan, adding, “Anything less is unacceptable.”

    2026-06-22T16:33:28.543Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/22/politics/supreme-court-e-jean-carroll-donald-trump-appeal

An explosive appeal from Trump over E. Jean Carroll sexual abuse verdict stalls at the Supreme Court

    2026-06-22T16:33:28.543Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/22/politics/supreme-court-e-jean-carroll-donald-trump-appeal

    • The Supreme Court has rescheduled consideration of President Trump’s appeal of a $5 million E. Jean Carroll verdict 15 times since February.
    • The delay has deferred the jury award for more than three years, while the Justice Department launched a criminal investigation into Carroll.
    • Trump’s attorneys have signaled a second appeal is coming soon, which could push any decision from the court into the fall.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

As the justices of the Supreme Court prepared to meet behind closed doors on February 27, they had before them an explosive case involving President Donald Trump, who is seeking to overturn a federal jury’s finding that he sexually abused and defamed magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll.

But a day before the justices held that private meeting, the Trump case was yanked without explanation.

Since then, the politically sensitive appeal, which Trump initially filed in November, has been set on the court’s agenda and rescheduled 15 times. Only one other has been rescheduled as often in the current term, according to a CNN analysis.

Since Trump filed his appeal seven months ago, the president lost a separate $83 million case involving Carroll, and the Justice Department launched a criminal investigation into the magazine columnist.

The nation’s highest court almost never explains its handling of pending appeals and has not done so in the Carroll case. The delay could be because one or more justices is writing an opinion about the case. Or the court could be waiting for other appeals involving the Trump and Carroll dispute that are expected soon.

Whatever the reason, the delay has benefited Trump — in part because it has deferred a $5 million verdict a jury in New York awarded to Carroll more than three years ago.

“The oddity here isn’t just that the court has rescheduled one of the Carroll cases 15 times, it’s the absence of a persuasive justification for it having done so,” said Steve Vladeck of the Georgetown School of Law and a CNN Supreme Court analyst.

The most logical explanation, Vladeck said, is that the court is waiting for the other expected appeals, even though the cases deal with different legal issues.

“The only other explanation is some kind of special solicitude for President Trump — which runs into the problem that this case, at least, is about conduct he engaged in when he was not in office,” Vladeck said.

Carroll sued Trump in 2019 for defamation and then she sued him again in 2022 for defamation and battery after the state enacted a law allowing the victims of sexual abuse to file civil claims for past incidents. In an unusual quirk, the second case — the one filed in 2022 — went to trial first and the jury awarded Carroll $5 million. That is the case that is already pending at the Supreme Court.

The 2019 case went to trial second and resulted in an $83 million judgment against Trump. The first case — filed in 2019 — is expected to land at the Supreme Court in the coming days.

Including interest, Trump owes Carroll over $100 million.

Carroll’s 2022 suit alleged that he sexually assaulted her in a New York department store in the mid-1990s and defamed her by claiming she made up the story to boost sales of a book. Trump, who has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, has claimed US District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who oversaw the civil trial, made numerous errors by allowing the jury to hear testimony from two women who alleged Trump sexually assaulted them years ago.

Trump also argued that the judge should not have let the jurors see the “Access Hollywood tape,” which captured Trump in 2005 on a hot mic saying he gropes and kisses women.

“You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything, … Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything,” Trump was heard saying on the recording.

Kaplan concluded the recording was relevant for the jury to hear because it added to the probability that Trump “in fact has had contact with women’s genitalia in the past without their consent, or that he has attempted to do so.”

Last year, the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the jury’s $5 million verdict against Trump, ruling the trial judge did not make errors that would warrant a new trial. In June 2025, Trump lost an effort to have the appeal reviewed by the full bench of judges and, months later, he appealed to the Supreme Court.

“It is deeply damaging to the fabric of our republic for President Trump, in the midst of a historic presidency, to have to take his focus away from his singular and unique duties as chief executive to continue fighting against decades-old, false allegations and the myriad wrongs throughout this baseless case,” the president’s attorneys told the Supreme Court in a January filing. “This mistreatment of a President cannot be allowed to stand.”

In urging the high court to deny the case, Carroll’s attorneys argued that the district court acted within its jurisdiction in how it handled the evidence.

In a highly technical brief at the Supreme Court dealing with rules of evidence, Carroll’s attorneys focused largely on the 2nd Circuit decision upholding the verdict.

“The court’s duty was simply to decide whether a jury could reasonably find by a preponderance of the evidence that Mr. Trump committed an act of sexual assault,” a three-judge panel of the 2nd Circuit, all three of whom were appointed by Democratic presidents, ruled unanimously. “If it could so find, the court had the discretion to admit the evidence.”

Those written arguments were all submitted to the Supreme Court by the end of January.

And that’s when the delays began.

During its October-to-June term, the Supreme Court justices meet privately in conferences once a week to discuss whether to grant or deny pending appeals. It takes four justices to grant a case.

But appeals are often held for multiple conferences for many different reasons. Under Chief Justice John Roberts, the court almost always holds an appeal for at least a second meeting before granting the appeal and scheduling oral arguments, for instance. And sometimes, cases are repeatedly relisted and denied without explanation.

Sometimes cases are held to give a justice an opportunity to dissent from a decision to deny it. Sometimes, the justices seem likely to be waiting for a similar case to make its way up through the lower courts. Often, the reason is opaque.

Usually, when a case is held, it is “relisted” for future conferences. The Supreme Court has been relisting multiple appeals involving local bans on assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines since December, for instance.

But what’s different about the case involving Carroll is that the president’s appeal is being “rescheduled.” That suggests it’s not being discussed at all — at least not formally.

Last year, the court rescheduled a case dealing with the federal government’s sweeping power to prosecute crimes on Native American lands 17 times — holding it over its summer recess. In the end, the petition was denied.

Only one other case has been rescheduled as many times as the Carroll appeal. That case, which involves a housing police officer in Ohio who shot and killed a suspect who was fleeing with a gun in his hand, has also rescheduled 15 times.

Breaking down the major decisions looming before the Supreme Court
    4:00

A spokesperson for the Supreme Court did not respond to a request for comment.

Carroll’s attorneys declined to comment. Trump’s legal team referred to a prior comment on the case in which he described Carroll’s claims as “false” and “Liberal Lawfare.”

Much has changed in the legal brawl between Trump and Carroll since the case made its way to the Supreme Court’s docket. The Justice Department launched a criminal investigation into Carroll last month that is focused on whether she committed perjury in testimony tied to the pending appeal.

Meanwhile, a second case involving Trump and Carroll appears to be on the way.

Carroll sued Trump again over statements he made about her in 2019. A jury in New York found those statements were defamatory and ordered Trump to pay $83 million in damages. A federal appeals court panel affirmed the damages award finding it “reasonable in light of the extraordinary and egregious facts” and rejected several of Trump’s legal challenges. Among them, the appeals court found that Trump had previously waived any claim of presidential immunity and said the Supreme Court’s decision in 2024 involving presidential immunity did not alter their view.

The full 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals declined to revisit that decision in late April.

In an unusual letter in the Carroll case already pending at the Supreme Court, Trump’s attorneys wrote on June 2 that they intend to appeal the second case to the Supreme Court “within the next month.”

“The court,” Trump’s attorneys added, “may wish to consider the petitions together.”

Given the way scheduling works at the Supreme Court, that round would almost certainly push a decision on whether to hear or deny the Carroll matter into the fall.

On Monday, the court once against added the case to its agenda for Thursday.

Judge blocks Trump administration’s overhauled database of Americans’ personal information

    June 22, 2026 / 3:08 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — A federal judge on Monday ruled the Trump administration acted unlawfully when it created a centralized database that contains Americans’ private information, which she said has since been used by some states to incorrectly remove U.S. citizens from their voter rolls.

U.S. District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan in Washington, D.C., sided with a voting rights group and nonprofit that works to protect privacy in finding that the administration violated three different laws with its new system that includes Americans’ citizenship data.

“All in all, the federal government has knowingly trampled on the privacy rights of American citizens in a manner that threatens the sacred right to vote,” she wrote. “This Court cannot stand idly by while that happens.”

The judge set aside the administration’s overhaul of a database maintained by the Department of Homeland Security to verify citizenship and immigration status, called the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements, or SAVE, system.

The plaintiffs in the case had argued that the Trump administration turned that tool into a “searchable national citizenship data system” that draws from records held by the Social Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security.

Sooknanan said that the court fight raises two fundamental rights that aim to protect Americans from government overreach: the right to privacy and the right to vote. And she said the record in the case demonstrated that the federal agencies that created the clearinghouse knew it violated privacy protections put in place by Congress decades ago.

The judge wrote that the Trump administration “flunked compliance” with the Social Security Act, the Privacy Act and the Administrative Procedure Act by “haphazardly” combining and repurposing “the private information of millions of Americans, including citizenship data that they knew to be unreliable.”

The data bank was created by several federal agencies in response to an executive order signed by President Trump last year that sought to impose a new proof-of-citizenship requirement for those registering to vote. The order directed DHS and the SSA to create a database that would effectively allow state and local officials to verify citizenship or immigration status of individuals trying to register to vote.

The executive order drew several legal challenges, and key provisions have been blocked.

Still, the directive triggered the overhaul of the SAVE system, which was modified to include the records of natural-born citizens, to access records from the SSA, including Social Security numbers, and to permit bulk searches of records by entities that use the database.

In response to the administration’s efforts to pool Americans’ data, the League of Women Voters, the Electronic Privacy Information Center and five individuals sued DHS, the SSA and the Department of Justice, arguing that the consolidation of Americans’ sensitive records from multiple agencies was unlawful.

The plaintiffs said that since the SAVE system was modified, states had partnered with the federal government to run their voter registration lists through the database and purged people who were incorrectly identified as noncitizens from their voter rolls.

The Trump administration had defended its use of the SAVE system, which has been used since 1986, as a “clear congressional directive to break down information silos between government agencies.” The administration argued that the suit should be dismissed because DHS had the authority to modernize the database.

Justice Department lawyers told the court that only a small number of naturalized voters may have inaccurate citizenship data in SSA records. But Sooknanan called the argument a “red herring” and said the dissemination of inaccurate information about citizenship status is defamatory, in part because it implies that those who were improperly removed from voter rolls violated a federal prohibition against noncitizen voting.

She said the Trump administration’s “arguments to the contrary border on the absurd.”

The judge said the overhauled system and related notices from DHS and the SSA were “contrary to law, arbitrary and capricious, in excess of statutory authority, and without observance of procedure required by law.”

The decision can be appealed to the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. It was cheered by one of the organizations representing the plaintiffs in the case as an “important victory for the American people and our democracy.”

“The data at the heart of this lawsuit was unlawfully consolidated in violation of privacy laws intended to protect sensitive personal information,” Skye Perryman, president and CEO of Democracy Forward, said in a statement. “We are honored to work alongside the plaintiffs and co-counsel in this case, and are grateful that the court has acted to protect people and our elections every day and especially during our nation’s 250th anniversary year.”
