Dept of Justice launches new trade fraud enforcement unit

CHICAGO, July 14 (Reuters) – The Department of Justice said on Tuesday it is creating a new global trade enforcement section of its ​National Fraud Division to investigate and prosecute criminal import, ‌trade and customs fraud offenses.

• The new unit is part of a shift by federal agencies from pursuing administrative fines for import violations to criminal ​prosecutions. Since the DOJ and the Department of Homeland ​Security launched the Trade Fraud Task Force in August ⁠2025, the agencies have exceeded $1 billion in civil and criminal ​recoveries, penalties, forfeitures and publicly charged losses.
• The DOJ’s trade fraud unit’s ​mission is to investigate and prosecute criminal schemes to import goods illegally that violate U.S. product safety and anti-forced labor laws or misreport import values ​and other information to evade tariffs.
• “For too long, fraud actors ​have viewed customs violations as a mere surcharge or cost of doing ‌business,” ⁠Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald said in a statement. “By utilizing the Department’s full weight, we are making it clear that trade fraud is a serious economic crime.”
• DOJ and DHS officials made the ​announcement at a ​U.S. Customs ⁠and Border Protection inspection warehouse near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, a major import hub, amid boxes ​of confiscated illegal vaping devices and drones.
• The U.S. ​Attorney’s Office ⁠for the Northern District of Illinois also announced criminal charges in two Chicago-based gold jewelry import cases in which defendants were separately ⁠accused ​of falsely declaring the country of ​origin to evade tariffs. The jewelry had a combined import value of $933 million and ​avoided customs duties of $51.6 million, the office said.

June’s inflation data showed a big drop. How will that impact the 2027 Social Security COLA?

Social Security recipients are still on track for one of the biggest cost-of-living increases in recent years, with new estimates pointing to a 3.6% to 3.8% benefit boost in 2027 after June’s cooler-than-expected inflation report.

The 2027 COLA could rise by 3.6%, according to the AARP, while the Senior Citizens League is forecasting a 3.8% increase, unchanged from its prior month’s forecast but down from its May estimate for a 3.9% boost.

As of January, the average retired worker received $2,071 a month in Social Security benefits, according to the Social Security Administration. A 3.6% to 3.8% COLA would increase the average monthly benefit by about $75 to $79, raising it to roughly $2,149 at the upper end of the range.

The COLA is intended to help benefits keep pace with inflation, but it is based on past price increases. The Social Security Administration calculates the adjustment using inflation data from July through September, meaning the final 2027 COLA could differ from current estimates based on recent Consumer Price Index reports.

The Social Security Administration will announce the 2027 COLA on Oct. 14, after the September CPI report is released, according to the AARP. The advocacy group said this is its first COLA projection ahead of the third-quarter inflation reports that will be used to calculate the official adjustment.

“Inflation is pretty unstable right now,” Alex Moore, the statistician for the Senior Citizens League, told CBS News in an email.

June’s inflation data came in much cooler than economists had expected, rising 3.5% on an annual basis, lower than the forecast of 3.9%. The report reflected a sharp cooling from May, when the CPI hit a three-year high of 4.2%.

Despite annual COLA increases, many seniors say they’re falling behind financially. Research from the Senior Citizens League shows Social Security benefits have lost nearly 14% of their buying power over the past decade because the inflation measure used to calculate the COLA doesn’t fully reflect expenses that disproportionately affect older Americans, such as healthcare.

The Social Security Administration relies on a subset of the inflation gauge called the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI-W. But advocates for older Americans say the index is based on younger workers’ spending patterns and doesn’t accurately reflect older Americans’ spending.

Most seniors are frustrated with their Social Security cost-of-living adjustments, with 89% saying the 2026 hike of 2.8% was too low, allowing their benefits to fall short of inflation, the Senior Citizens League found in a June survey.

Trump says FBI is ‘wasting their time’ if they’re pursuing conspiracy theories in Graham death investigation

President Donald Trump downplayed the idea Tuesday that Sen. Lindsey Graham’s death was a result of any nefarious activity, saying the FBI is “wasting their time” if they’re pursuing conspiracy theories about the matter.

According to four law enforcement sources who spoke with CNN, investigators have no indication that Graham died from unnatural or nefarious causes. One of the sources said local police are conducting a normal review after someone dies, and the FBI has just offered their resources if necessary.

“I know there’s all sorts of conspiracy theories going along, and I don’t think the FBI — I think the FBI is wasting their time if they’re doing that,” Trump said when asked why the FBI was looking into the death or if he had gotten any updates.

The medical examiner has said preliminarily that Graham suffered an aortic dissection – a tear in his artery that is life threatening in most cases. Commentators online have suggested more sinister theories. Far-right activist Laura Loomer, for example, pointed to Graham having just returned from Ukraine, where he pushed for sanctions against Russia, before his death Saturday. GOP Sen. John Cornyn called for the release of a toxicology report to “rule out any foul play.”

Some in the law enforcement community felt FBI Director Kash Patel added fuel to the fire when he cryptically posted on X following Graham’s death that the FBI was “assisting local authorities and has made every necessary resource available.” And the public confusion was compounded when FBI agents were seen entering Graham’s home in Washington, DC, on Monday – with no clear indication as to why, as sources had indicated previously there weren’t signs of foul play.

Neither Patel nor the FBI has publicly clarified the director’s statement. Sources told CNN that Patel’s post was meant to reference the normal review process law enforcement takes following a lawmaker’s death.

Much of what is known publicly from those who interacted with Graham in the hours before his death does not point to any foul play.

GOP Sen. Tommy Tuberville said one of his staffers was with Graham’s scheduler Saturday evening when the South Carolina Republican called the scheduler to complain of chest pains – which could be a symptom of an aortic dissection – and asked her to call for emergency services.

“Lindsey called, called basically, said, ‘Listen, I’m having chest pains. You know, I need to do something,’” Tuberville told reporters on Monday, relaying the account of those involved. CNN also previously reported that emergency responders were dispatched to a DC address for Graham around 8:30 pm ET for a report of someone suffering chest pains, according to audio of the dispatch on Broadcastify.

Several people have said Graham sounded OK in their interactions with him before he died.

Trump has said he talked to Graham on the phone before his death, and Graham indicated he was tired from the trip but otherwise seemed fine. Sen. Katie Britt told CNN she also spoke with Graham this weekend – after he spoke with Trump – and he was “so excited about getting the White House onboard with the Russian sanctions bill.” She said she had no sense anything was amiss.

Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal offered a similar account to CNN.

“He sounded absolutely fine,” said Blumenthal, noting he had talked to Graham on Friday and Saturday. “In fact, better than fine.”

Trump said Tuesday an aortic tear is “very hard to detect” and that he has had White House doctors explain the diagnosis to him.

“When that bursts, which it did — it burst — there’s not much, so I don’t see a lot of evil there,” he said.

He added of his friend: “I wish he took better care of himself.”

Several key groups are coming to the support of acting Attorney General Todd Blanche as he navigates Senate confirmation to officially become the successor to Pam Bondi, according to the office of Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Support cited by Grassley’s office includes 670,000 sworn officers, 300 angel families, families who lost a loved one to crimes committed by undocumented immigrants and 100 bipartisan U.S. attorneys and DOJ officials.

The office highlighted a statement from 23 attorneys general, among other outpourings of support.

“At a time when Americans expect their government to protect communities from violent crime, narcotics trafficking, human trafficking, terrorism and organized criminal activity, Todd Blanche has shown the ability to deliver real results. His record reflects a commitment to public safety, vigorous enforcement of federal law and effective stewardship of the Department of Justice… we urge the Senate to swiftly confirm Todd Blanche as United States Attorney General,” the statement said.

Support received by Grassley highlighted Blanche’s work as acting attorney general and, in particular, his aggressive stance toward enforcement.

Blanche took over the Department of Justice after Bondi left the role in April.

President Donald Trump dismissed her after what many critics saw as a botched handling of the Epstein Files, overpromising transparency on who may have facilitated the sex trafficking crimes of Jeffrey Epstein and then underdelivering.

Since taking the role, Blanche has steered the DOJ away from the Epstein controversy and refocused messaging on domestic security. Soon after taking command, he created a National Fraud Enforcement Division and highlighted reductions in violent crime, drug seizures, immigration enforcement and prosecution of gangs and cartels.

Now that Trump has officially tapped him to become the next attorney general, The American Border Story (TABS), which represents Angel Families, said Blanche is key to continuing that work.

“At a time when the Department of Justice must confront violent crime, illegal immigration, human trafficking, child exploitation, cartels, MS-13, Tren de Aragua, and other transnational threats, the country needs clear leadership and sustained operational focus… TABS respectfully urges the Senate Committee on the Judiciary to give full and fair consideration to Todd Blanche’s nomination and to advance his confirmation as Attorney General of the United States,” TABS said in a statement.

The National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) echoed that reasoning in a statement of its own.

“We believe Mr. Blanche’s leadership will help ensure that the Department of Justice remains focused on public safety, the rule of law, and providing unwavering support for the law enforcement professionals who risk their lives daily to protect our families and communities… On behalf of the more than 382,000 members of the Fraternal Order of Police, we commend President Trump on his nomination of Todd W. Blanche to lead the Justice Department and urge the committee to favorably report his nomination.”

Another group of 78 former DOJ officials praised Blanche for steering the department back toward law enforcement and staying away from politically charged controversy.

“Todd Blanche understands that the Department’s mission is to deliver justice — not to serve political interests or entrenched bureaucracies,” the group said.

Blanche is expected to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday morning, and outside witnesses will testify Thursday.

Killings by immigration agents were a big problem for Trump — and now they’re back

Few if any events in President Donald Trump’s second term have caused his administration to course correct as much as when federal agents killed two protesters against its immigration crackdown in Minneapolis in January.

Two top officials overseeing that crackdown have since departed, including Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and the administration tacitly acknowledged that things had gotten out of hand. Polling backed up just how bad the killings were for the administration.

But things are risking getting out of hand for the administration on this issue again — and at a pretty troubling time, politically.

After months of relative quiet when it came to major deportation controversies, federal agents have killed two people this month — one in Texas last week, then another in Maine on Monday.

As with the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, the episodes appear primed to test not just Americans’ tolerance for Trump’s immigration agenda, but also the administration’s credibility. The Department of Homeland Security has routinely made dubious and even flatly false claims about such incidents, and questions about its accounts are popping up again.

Notably, in the most recent shooting death in Maine, DHS doesn’t even claim the man who was killed was threatening the lives of the officers — just that he was fleeing the scene and that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer was “fearing for public safety.” But that’s generally not a reason to shoot someone.

So where does this issue stand politically?

It’s pretty clear that Minneapolis’ impact has lingered. That’s because, despite Trump’s demonstrated success in reducing illegal border crossings to historic lows, he remains substantially underwater on the issue of immigration.

A Reuters-Ipsos poll last month showed Americans disapproved of Trump on immigration, 55%-37%. And they said immigration policy was on the “wrong track” rather than the right one by a 51%-35% margin. Those numbers were very similar to where they were in the aftermath of Good’s and Pretti’s killings in a poll conducted in February.

Quinnipiac University polling showed Trump’s immigration numbers improving modestly since February — going from 21 points negative on immigration to 13 points negative last month. But he was still significantly underwater.

ICE, whose agents shot both people this month, also remained more unpopular than ever, even before these latest shootings in Texas and Maine.

A Marquette Law School poll in May showed Americans had an unfavorable view of ICE by a wide margin, 61%-36%.

That roughly 6 in 10 who disapproved of ICE was similar to what other pollsters found in January, in the aftermath of Good’s and Pretti’s killings.

And even just having ICE back in the news would seem to be bad for the Trump administration given the agency’s longstanding unpopularity. In fact, polling as far back as a year ago — well before the Minneapolis killings — showed ICE hitting what was then new levels of unpopularity.

In other words, Americans seem to have had a problem with how the administration has carried out its deportations for a long time. The January killings appeared to raise the salience of that issue in ways that were unhelpful for the administration.

And that’s the political danger in the killings in Maine and Texas.

Much remains to shake out there, and the situations aren’t completely analogous to what happened in Minneapolis.

One key distinction is the lack of video footage as substantial as existed in Minneapolis, where many protesters were around to capture the events. The agents in both shootings this month don’t appear to have worn body cameras, despite efforts after Minneapolis to get such agents outfitted in them.

That footage in Minneapolis not only contradicted what the Trump administration had initially claimed about the killings; it led Americans to conclude by large margins that the immigration agents were at fault.

For now, Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine says the shooting in her state “raises sufficient critical questions” that she urged DHS to stop non-urgent vehicle stops, which DHS appears to have agreed to do. And both she and Maine Sen. Angus King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, are calling to mandate body cameras and for ICE not to investigate itself.

But it’s become abundantly clear that the Trump administration has gone too far with its deportation agenda for Americans’ taste.

Americans broadly liked the idea of deporting undocumented immigrants during the 2024 campaign, and that issue spurred Trump back to the presidency after an influx of illegal immigration during President Joe Biden’s term.

But Americans have routinely said the administration’s tactics have rubbed them the wrong way, according to polling — from wrongful deportations, to sending people without due process to a brutal prison to El Salvador, to the crackdowns in places like Chicago and Minneapolis. After Pretti’s killing, polls showed 6 in 10 Americans said ICE had gone “too far.”

And now, after the administration had seemed to move beyond a political liability, those tactics are back in the news.

Capt. “Sully” Sullenberger, “Miracle on the Hudson” pilot, shares Alzheimer’s diagnosis

Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, who famously landed a passenger jet on the Hudson River in 2009, shared Tuesday he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

“It is early stage. For now, this means a name may not come easily to me, I forget a story I have recently told, or I don’t sleep as well, but I am in the beginning of this long journey,” he wrote in a post on social media. His statement was first shared with People magazine.

Alzheimer’s is a brain condition that gradually causes problems with memory and other skills. It is the most common cause of dementia. There is no cure.

Sullenberger became a national hero when his quick thinking saved 155 people on board US Airways Flight 1549 on Jan. 15, 2009. Shortly after takeoff from New York’s LaGuardia Airport, both engines of the plane started to fail due to a bird strike. In less than four minutes, Sullenberger and his crew executed an emergency water landing in the Hudson River, after determining landing at an airport wasn’t feasible, according to a cockpit voice recorder transcript. All passengers and crew members were then evacuated from the plane and rescued by first responders.

The landing would become known as the “Miracle on the Hudson” and was portrayed in the 2016 film titled “Sully.”

Sullenberger, who went on to serve for years as an on-air expert for CBS News, is an advocate for aviation safety.

Since his diagnosis, the retired pilot said he has learned how prevalent Alzheimer’s is. More than 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Sullenberger said he hopes by sharing his diagnosis, others with the disease will also speak up.

“Over the years, when people would ask about the successful outcome of Flight 1549, I would say that ‘courage can be contagious,’ and on that day it helped everyone band together to get everyone off that airplane successfully,” he wrote. “Now we need that courage to battle this disease. I am now part of a larger community with many of you, and we will be courageous together.”

WASHINGTON, July 14 (Reuters) – The top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee on ​Tuesday asked Paramount CEO David Ellison if he or the company were ‌pressuring CBS News to air content sought by President Donald Trump.

Representative Jamie Raskin, who would take over as committee chair next year if Democrats win control of the House in November, said in a letter to ​Ellison: “Your company appears to be colluding with the Trump Administration to curtail ​media independence, promote political and ideological censorship, and stifle dissent.”

The letter ⁠cited concerns regarding CBS’s editorial independence after 60 Minutes journalist Scott Pelley was ​fired and alleged that CBS editor in chief Bari Weiss asked him to make ​anti-ICE protesters “look more violent.”

Raskin and Representative Frank Pallone in May asked Ellison if he or the company offered to make changes to CNN’s coverage of Trump in exchange for approval of a $110 billion ​acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery.

Paramount declined to comment. CBS did not immediately respond to ​a request for comment.

“It is plain to see that you have been delivering for
President Trump at ‌CBS ⁠and that Bari Weiss is poised to deliver at CNN, if the acquisition is approved,” Raskin wrote.

On Monday, California and 11 states sued to block Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery.

In November, Raskin and Pallone said Paramount was “stonewalling congressional oversight” after they sought ​documents tied to ​the Federal Communications ⁠Commission’s approval of Skydance’s $8.4 billion merger with the CBS News-parent company.

Trump has aggressively pushed the Federal Communications Commission to go ​after media companies over programs or news content he deems unfair.

​Shortly before ⁠the deal was approved, Paramount last year paid $16 million to settle Trump’s lawsuit against CBS over its editing of a “60 Minutes” interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris, ⁠Trump’s Democratic ​opponent in 2024.

Skydance also agreed to ensure ​CBS News and entertainment programming would be free of bias, hire an ombudsman for at least two years ​to review complaints, and end diversity programs.

PORTLAND, Maine– The clock is quickly ticking in the race to replace former candidate Graham Platner as Maine’s Democratic Senate nominee in the race to challenge longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

Candidates gunning to win the Democratic nomination must file with the state party by Wednesday to get on the ballot. Eight Democrats have filed so far to run for the nomination, which will be determined by 601 voting delegates at a July 25 convention held by the Maine Democratic Party.

Platner, a populist Democrat who was backed last September by progressive champion Sen. Bernie Sanders, won the early June Democratic primary in a landslide. He was challenging Collins in a high-profile, combustible and expensive race which is one of a handful that will determine if the GOP holds onto its slim Senate majority in November’s midterm elections.

A combat veteran and oyster farmer whose campaign caught fire, Platner steamrolled the Democratic establishment. But even as he crushed the competition to capture the nomination, Platner had already been forced on defense in the wake of a slew of scandals.

DEMOCRATS RUNNING TO REPLACE PLATNER CALL FOR ICE TO BE ‘ABOLISHED’

Platner dropped out of the race last week, amid calls from top Democrats in Maine and across the country to immediately exit the race following an explosive report contained an allegation of rape from a woman he previously dated.

Facing a July 27 deadline to replace Platner with a new nominee, the state Democratic Party announced that all 16 Maine counties will convene special nomination meetings this weekend where participants will vote to elect delegates.

Those delegates will meet the following Saturday, July 25, in Bangor, Maine, to vote for the party’s nominee.

Ahead of the vote, a “statewide network of volunteer leaders who organized, knocked doors, hosted events, and built the loop grassroots infrastructure behind Graham Platner’s campaign,” in an open letter on Tuesday to the state party made it clear that the organization they built “does not transfer automatically to whoever the Party selects.”

“It will only continue to exist, and only continue to be deployed, for a nominee who publicly and explicitly adopts” a list of core progressive commitments that they listed.

The letter is a sign of the tough task ahead for whomever wins the nomination to quickly unite the different wings of the Democratic base.

Here’s a look at who have already announced they’re running.

Nirav Shah

Shah finished with the most votes in last month’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, but lost the nomination to former Maine House Speaker Hannah Pingree following ranked choice voting.

Shah directed the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention from 2019 to 2023 and later served as principal deputy director of the federal CDC, stepping down shortly after President Donald Trump assumed office last year.

Touting his “strong progressive stances,” Shah told Fox News Digital that “my message to those supporters of Graham’s is a very clear one. You have a home in this campaign. You have an important voice in this campaign.”

Troy Jackson

Jackson, a former Maine Senate President and fifth-generation logger, came in third place in Maine’s Democratic gubernatorial primary.

Jackson campaigned with Platner during Maine’s primary, and, along with Platner, was endorsed by Sanders. And his gubernatorial campaign was also backed by the Maine chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

He’s being supported by the Sanders-founded Our Revolution as he runs for the Senate.

“This movement is always been bigger than one person. It’s about taking on a system rigged against working people, fighting for Medicare for all, strong unions, higher wages, reproductive freedom, and an economy where billionaires and corporations finally pay their fair share,” Jackson said Monday during a Our Revolution virtual town hall, as he pointed to Platner supporters.

Shenna Bellows

Bellows, Maine’s Secretary of State, came in fourth place in the race for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

“Flipping the Senate in November is crucial. I’m running to pass Medicare for all, fight for workers’ rights, and protect our neighbors,” Bellows said in a social media post.

If she wins the nomination, this will be the second time Bellows will face off against Collins. The senator topped Bellows by a more than two-to-one margin in the 2014 Senate election in Maine.

Jordan Wood

Wood is a former congressional staffer for Katie Porter who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination this year in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, a crucial swing seat.

Wood originally launched a Senate campaign last year, but pivoted to the House race when Democratic Rep. Jared Golden announced he wouldn’t seek re-election.

“This campaign belongs to the Mainers who built it: the volunteers, small-dollar donors, and neighbors who filled town halls in every corner of the state. We refuse every dime of corporate PAC, AIPAC, and lobbyist money, because a movement funded by the people answers only to the people,” Wood said on social media.

David Costello

This is Costello’s second run this year for the Senate nomination.

He finished with 8% of the vote in the June primary, coming in third behind Platner and Gov. Janet Mills, who had already suspended her campaign but her name remained on the ballot.

A former Maryland Department of the Environment deputy secretary, Costello was the Democratic Senate nominee in Maine in the 2024 election, coming in a distant third to incumbent independent Sen. Angus King.

Dan Kleban

A co-founder of the Maine Beer Company, Kleban briefly ran for the Democratic Senate nomination before dropping out and endorsing Mills.

“I fully support an open, transparent process to earn the trust of our delegates, unite our party, and bring a new generation of leadership to Washington,” Kleban wrote as he announced his filing on Tuesday.

Paige Loud

Loud is a social worker who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic primary for Maine’s 2nd congressional district.

“The grassroots movement in Maine is more powerful than ever, and we cannot afford to lose that momentum. This has always been about building a future where every Mainer has a voice and a seat at the table,” Loud wrote as she launched her Senate bid.

Elizabeth Dickerson

Dickerson’s LinkedIn page indicates she served as a state representative from 2012 through 2014, resigning from the Legislature and working as a teacher in Colorado from 2016 to 2020 before moving back to Maine.

“I believe in a world where everyone belongs, but the disparity between the rich and the poor keeps growing. I believe that with power, responsibility should follow,” Dickerson wrote in explaining her Senate bid.

How Jeffrey Epstein parlayed his elite network into a $25 million payday

When elite Swiss banker Ariane de Rothschild sought to extract her company from the teeth of a federal investigation into its role in helping high-end customers hide potentially billions from the IRS, documents show she turned to an unexpected American businessman for help: convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

In this new role, Epstein appears to have helped Edmond de Rothschild, one of Europe’s largest private banks, resolve a menacing Justice Department investigation, garnering him a $25 million fee. And in doing so, he displayed another facet of his ability to tap his network of wealthy and powerful patrons for his personal gain.

As Epstein himself explained it in a Dec. 11, 2015, email to Rothschild, he had helped negotiate a deal for the bank to pay $45.5 million to the IRS, $10 million in legal fees, and $25 million to him — which he sold as a bargain.

“All less than 80 [million dollars] pretty good,” he wrote.

Congress will hear from a figure at the center of those negotiations Wednesday. The Swiss bank’s American lawyer on that matter, Kathy Ruemmler, a former Obama White House attorney, will be appearing before the House Oversight Committee to answer questions about her documented longstanding ties with Epstein.

A review of documents from the Epstein files released by the DOJ reveals details about his involvement in that settlement and how he achieved the mega payout.

What emerges is a glimpse at how Epstein mastered the appearance of expertise, combined it with a talent for brokering relationships, and through minimal work parlayed it into immense wealth.

The Swiss investigation

The Justice Department launched an investigation it called The Swiss Bank Program in August 2013. It was based on allegations that certain Swiss banks, including Rothschild’s, had assisted Americans in hiding assets through a variety of means including concealing ownership of accounts.

Epstein and Ariane de Rothschild, the bank’s leader, were first introduced that same year by a mutual friend, emails show. Epstein had finished up his period of incarceration and house arrest in 2011 following his plea deal for soliciting a minor for prostitution, and was a registered sex offender. But his social and business calendar remained full.

Epstein quickly began offering advice to Rothschild. Soon after their first meeting, Rothschild wrote to Epstein: “Thank you much for sharing your thoughts with me. I truly appreciate it as you well know how few people do so and have the courage of their opinions.”

People who interacted with Epstein at the time told CBS News that the academics, financiers and diplomats who continued their association with him gave him a patina of respectability, persuading them to ignore his past crimes.

Epstein’s criminal charges and the resulting negative publicity had, however, led to his loss of the billionaire retail magnate Leslie Wexner as a client, who had been the main source of Epstein’s wealth for over a decade. Payments from the financier Leon Black allegedly for tax and estate planning were now bringing in tens of millions of dollars, allowing him to continue his lavish lifestyle. In a statement to Congress, Black called Epstein’s services “highly valuable,” and he said Epstein’s work on his taxes “was responsible for billions of dollars in savings” and “had been vetted by reputable law and accounting firms.”

But emails show Epstein was still on the hunt for other sources of income.

Rothschild had married into the famous banking family and had been handling operational duties there since the mid-1990s. Suddenly the bank was facing an existential moment as the U.S. government threatened major fines and potential charges. Enter Epstein.

In June of 2014, Epstein sent an email to Rothschild, saying, “If I can be helpful, I would be glad to, I expect no, nor do I want any financial relationship of any kind. I am doing this as my way to do good. and to repay a deep debt that i feel I owe to edmonde.” This appears to be a reference to her father-in-law Edmond Adolphe de Rothschild, the bank’s founder, who died in 1997.

Kathy Ruemmler

In the summer of 2014, Ruemmler had just left the Obama White House, where she served as White House counsel, and returned to Latham & Watkins, the law firm she had departed five and a half years earlier. Her return came with the expectation that she would leverage her experience and connections to bring significant new business to the firm.

Ruemmler had also previously served as a prosecutor at the Department of Justice, where she helped secure convictions of Enron executives. Her legal credentials were so highly regarded that she would soon be considered a potential nominee to serve as the next attorney general.

It is unclear how Ruemmler first came to Epstein’s attention. Email correspondence between the two began in the summer of 2014. Ruemmler has said that Epstein cold-called her and offered to arrange a meeting with Bill Gates — an opportunity that was both professionally attractive and potentially highly lucrative.

In September of 2014, Epstein introduced Ruemmler to Rothschild. A mutual friendship and agreement to work together was quickly cemented. By October, just five months after leaving public service, Ruemmler appeared to have begun meeting with Justice Department lawyers on behalf of the bank.

Ruemmler has previously said she only shared a client with Epstein, but documents released last fall by the House Oversight Committee and by the DOJ in January suggested that that relationship grew more personal. Emails show that she sometimes addressed him as “Uncle Jeffrey” and accepted expensive gifts from him. Their correspondence continued until Epstein’s death in 2019. A search of the Epstein files reveals nearly 10,000 results for her name. Epstein opened doors and provided opportunities to meet some of the richest and most influential people in the world including Gates, Peter Thiel and former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Their friendship proved lucrative for both of them.

Survivors and advocates have accused her of turning a blind eye in the interest of advancing her own career.

In a statement to CBS News, a spokesperson for Ruemmler said “As has been well established, Ms. Ruemmler knew him in private practice, he was a referral source (including referring the Rothschild Bank) and she did not see or hear anything to suggest that Epstein was abusing women. Ms. Ruemmler has been open and transparent about her interactions with Jeffrey Epstein when she was a defense lawyer in private practice many years ago. She has done nothing wrong and had no knowledge of any ongoing criminal activity on his part.”

Ruemmler and the Swiss investigation

Over the next few months Ruemmler and her team traveled to Switzerland to do the laborious work of analyzing client files to counter DOJ claims and find ways to reduce the bank’s fine, according to a source familiar with the discussions. That was followed up with meeting after meeting in Washington, D.C., with the DOJ to hammer out the terms.

All the while, Epstein monitored the developments, but according to a source involved, he had no direct role in the actual work.

That summer, with the bank facing a fine that Ruemmler said could be as high as $556 million, Epstein broached payment with Rothschild for the first time. “If you choose to have me and my team involved . doj negotiation etc. structuring family ,KBL etc. , we should be able to invent a method of compensation,” he wrote. “I spoke with Kathy about an idea last night. And she or I can fill you in, if you choose to want it.”

A few days later Epstein wrote to Ruemmler laying out a plan: If the fine was $150 million to $200 million he’d receive $5 million; if it was $100 million to $150 million, he’d get $10 million; and under $100 million, his fee would shoot up to $25 million.

In the documents, Ruemmler never acknowledged that proposal. But in the same email chain she proposes hiring Epstein as a consultant through her firm to avoid issues “you were concerned about” and that “from a privilege perspective, that is the best way to do it.”

As DOJ negotiations continued, a payment agreement between Rothschild bank and Epstein’s company, Southern Trust, was formalized on Oct. 5. The agreement said Epstein was involved in “risk analysis” for the Rothschild Group.

Two months later, Rothschild wrote Epstein with two words: “45 mio?” — a reference to the DOJ’s agreement to settle matters for around $45 million.

Epstein would make his maximum payday of $25 million. The two firms actually representing the bank apparently would receive a combined $10 million for their work.

Shortly after, the DOJ sent out a press release announcing the agreement. Two days later, the first of two money transfers landed in Epstein’s bank account, records show. That week, Epstein’s assistant arranged for the purchase and delivery of a new television for Ruemmler.

Their mutually beneficial relationship and friendship would continue up until his death. By then, Ruemmler had left Latham and was hired as chief counsel for the investment firm Goldman Sachs. This spring she announced she was leaving that position but is reportedly staying on as a consultant.

In a recent interview in the New York Times Opinion section she said that she did not understand the full extent of his crimes until she was sitting in a courtroom following his July 2019 arrest on federal sex trafficking charges and heard the details of the charges read out by the prosecution.

A spokesperson for Edmond de Rothschild Group declined to comment and Latham & Watkins did not respond to multiple inquiries.

US cyclosporiasis cases top 1,600 with more cases likely, health officials say

July 14 (Reuters) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Tuesday it was conducting traceback investigations ‌on multiple produce items, including lettuce, as officials try to identify the source of a cyclosporiasis outbreak as the number of lab-confirmed cases continues to rise.

No deaths have been reported from the outbreak, but so far 141 people have been hospitalized, with 1,645 lab-confirmed cases reported across 34 states, according to the U.S. Centers ​for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency said it was aware of more than 5,100 additional reports that require more ​analysis and confirmation.

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection that can be contracted by consuming food — typically raw fruits and vegetables — ⁠or water contaminated with feces, according to the CDC. It causes diarrhea, nausea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

While the United States has experienced outbreaks ​of the gastrointestinal illness before, the scale and geographic spread of this year’s outbreak are significantly larger, prompting concern among health officials, who ​have so far officials not pinpointed the source of the outbreak.

“This is an active and evolving investigation,” said Gwen Biggerstaff, a CDC foodborne disease expert.

In traceback investigations, officials collect information from sick people on the foods they ate in the week before they got sick.

The CDC expects that cases will continue to increase, ​potentially through the end of August, Biggerstaff told reporters. The agency cautioned that there is a roughly six-week lag between the onset of ​illness and the reporting of cases, which means more infections are likely to be identified as additional data is received.

The current U.S. outbreak, which began on ‌May 1, ⁠is centered in Michigan, with Ohio and New York State also reporting high numbers of cases. Michigan health officials on Tuesday reported 3,309 cases in the state, an increase of 669 cases since the last update on Monday.

Biggerstaff told reporters that the evidence collected so far suggests that cases in Michigan, West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio may be linked to one source, though that does not account for cases in ​several other states.

“There are a number ​of other investigations that are ⁠going on, some single-state investigations as well as investigations for the cases that are not currently linked to a cluster or outbreak,” Biggerstaff said.

The company said ​it has removed certain ⁠ingredients at select restaurants for precautionary reasons, adding that U.S. health officials have not confirmed a link to the chain and the outbreak.

Dr. Michael Osterholm, an infectious disease expert at the University of Minnesota, said it is possible that the outbreak centered on Michigan is already over given that ⁠many produce ​items only have a shelf life of about three weeks.

Donald Prater, the FDA’s acting ​deputy commissioner for food, acknowledged that produce moves through the system quickly, but said the agency is looking at multiple clusters and sub-clusters, and it needs more information ​before it can determine whether the outbreak is already over.
