    • States could opt out of year-round daylight saving time if enacted

WASHINGTON, July 14 (Reuters) – The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted on Tuesday to pass a ‌bill making daylight saving time permanent and ending the twice-yearly practice of changing clocks that has been observed across most of the United States since the 1960s.

The 308-117 vote sends the bill to the Senate. If enacted, clocks would no longer return to standard time in November, though states could opt out of year-round daylight saving time.

The Reuters Daily Briefing newsletter provides all the news you need to start your day. Sign up here.

Supporters say changing the clocks disrupts sleep, increases workplace injuries and contributes to more road accidents. They also argue that keeping clocks an hour ahead year-round would provide more evening daylight and boost economic activity during the winter months.

Critics say the change would mean the sun rises an hour later on winter mornings, leaving more children traveling to school and commuters heading to work before daylight.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly called for an end to the twice-yearly clock changes and strongly supports the measure.

The bill still faces opposition from Senator Tom Cotton, an Arkansas Republican, and others. Cotton has argued that permanent daylight saving time would result in very late winter sunrises and force children in many parts of the country to go to school in ‌darkness.

On Monday, House lawmakers rejected a request to vote on an alternative proposal that would have made standard time, rather than daylight saving time, permanent.

Airlines for America, a group representing major U.S. air carriers, raised concerns, saying the bill would “have considerable implications for aviation, including passenger disruption, crew and aircraft positioning, and domestic and international connectivity issues…. Any changes would need an implementation timeline that reflects these global complications.”

In May, the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted 48-1 in favor of the Sunshine Protection Act. The U.S. Senate voted unanimously in March 2022 to make daylight saving time permanent but the House never took up the measure in the face of opposition. Hawaii and Arizona do not observe daylight saving time.

The U.S. used year-round daylight saving time during World War Two and enacted it again in 1974 to reduce energy use. But it proved deeply unpopular and Congress repealed it later that year.

Democratic Representative Frank Pallone said on Tuesday that commuting and work habits have changed and far fewer school children walk to school. “It’s time to finally end the process of springing forward and falling back,” Pallone said.

A bipartisan effort to make daylight saving time permanent is one step closer to becoming law after the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved the measure on Tuesday.

Lawmakers voted 308-117 to pass the Sunshine Protection Act, which would allow states to voluntarily observe daylight saving time year-round as a growing mass of lawmakers push to extend daylight into the evening hours.

“For decades, we have accepted this ritual of springing forward and falling back, even though it disrupts routines, throws off our sleep and creates unnecessary frustration for families across the country,” Rep. Kat Cammack, R-Fla., said Tuesday, detailing how the clock changes have disrupted her infant son’s sleep schedule.

“Let’s stop asking Americans to reset their clocks every March and November,” she continued. “Let’s provide some certainty and consistency and a little more sunshine at the end of the day.”

TRUMP-BACKED DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME BILL CLEARS KEY HOUSE HURDLE

The legislation divided lawmakers in both parties, with members largely from coastal areas, such as Louisiana, Florida and New Jersey, supporting permanent daylight saving time and others from the Midwest and agriculture-heavy states opposing it.

Democrats were nearly evenly split, with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., opposing it. Just 22 Republicans voted in opposition, including Reps. Bryan Steil, R-Wis.; Rick Crawford, R-Ark.; Ryan Zinke, R-Mont.; and Harriet Hageman, R-Wyo.

The measure now heads to the Senate, where its prospects remain uncertain amid skepticism from members of both parties. President Donald Trump, who has long called for ending the twice-a-year clock changes, is expected to sign the bill if it reaches his desk.

The White House urged lawmakers to support the Sunshine Protection Act in an internal memo sent to Hill offices Tuesday, calling it a “popular, common-sense reform.”

Nearly every state follows the practice of setting clocks forward one hour in March to preserve more evening daylight before “falling back” one hour in November.

But nearly 20 states have already approved legislation to make daylight saving time permanent if Congress authorizes the practice. Hawaii and most of Arizona, however, do not observe daylight saving time.

Proponents argued the legislation, authored by Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., was necessary to end disruptions caused by switching clocks, including to children’s routines and road safety, while arguing longer daylight would boost tourism and outdoor recreation.

“More evening sunshine means more time with family and more time to enjoy our local restaurants, shops, and everything Florida has to offer,” Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar, R-Fla., wrote on social media. “It’s common sense. Let’s get it done.”

Some lawmakers, however, argue that year-round daylight saving time would delay winter sunrises until after 9 a.m. in some parts of the country, raising safety concerns about darker morning commutes and economic challenges for farmers who would likely have to start work later.

SLEEP DOCTOR REVEALS THE BRUTAL HEALTH DOWNSIDE OF DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME

Detractors have also stated that permanent standard time — meaning more light in the mornings — better aligns with circadian rhythms.

“If we’re going to make a permanent change that affects every American, we should follow the science and prioritize Americans’ health, particularly that of the children,” Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, D-Pa., who favors permanent standard time, said during debate Monday.

Scanlon also pointed to the nation’s brief experiment with year-round daylight saving time in 1974, which Congress reversed after widespread public backlash.

Tuesday’s vote comes as the semiannual clock change remains widely unpopular with Americans, according to recent polling.

An AP-NORC survey released in December found that just 12% of Americans favor the current daylight saving time system, with nearly half opposed. Another 40% of respondents had no opinion.

The survey also found that more Americans support having daylight saving time year-round compared to standard time by a 14-point margin.

Senators introduce bipartisan plan to tackle Social Security insolvency

    July 14, 2026 / 4:11 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Mary Cunningham

A bipartisan group of senators introduced a bill on Tuesday designed to shore up Social Security’s finances in the coming decades and prevent future benefit cuts for the 70 million Americans who rely on the program.

The bill comes after last month’s annual Social Security trustees’ report projected that the program’s retirement trust fund could become insolvent by 2032, earlier than initially forecast. If that occurs, it would trigger a 22% across-the-board benefit cut, unless Congress acts before then, the report found.

The legislation, called the Promise Act, would not itself raise taxes, reduce benefits or change eligibility. Instead, it would direct the bipartisan, seven-member Social Security Advisory Board to draft a bill, informed by public input, to keep the program’s trust funds solvent for at least the next 50 years.

“Congress has known about this challenge for more than a decade, but it has not taken up these politically challenging issues,” Sen. Dick Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois and one of the sponsors of the bill, said in a statement. “And the longer Congress waits, the more difficult it will be to address this issue in the future.”

Any proposal developed by the advisory board would be introduced in the House and Senate by congressional leaders before being considered by committees, which could hold hearings and revise the legislation. To become law, it would need a three-fifths vote in the Senate and a majority vote in the House.

The Promise Act’s additional sponsors include Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Republican from Louisiana; Sen. Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia; Sen. Thom Tillis, a Republican from North Carolina; and Sen. Angus King, an independent from Maine.

The measure is one of several pathways legislators could take to save Social Security, which is facing a looming funding shortfall as spending for the program outpaces income. Members of Congress have introduced legislation in the past to address the insolvency issue, but none have gained enough traction to pass, according to Durbin’s office.

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/27bc7346-bc30-4f79-af68-c276bc5b5572

A separate estimate released in June by the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, an advocacy group focused on fiscal issues, found that beneficiaries could see their monthly checks cut by hundreds of dollars if the trust fund reserves are depleted.

Several policy groups, including the Bipartisan Policy Center and the Progressive Policy Institute, welcomed the legislation, saying it could help advance a bipartisan solution to Social Security’s long-term funding challenges.

“The Promise Act should be commended for not only offering one possible mechanism to fast-track bipartisan solutions that are long overdue through regular order, but also creating a recurring check-in to discourage policymakers from getting this close to a similar cliff again in the future,” Ben Ritz, vice president of policy development for the Progressive Policy Institute, said in a statement.

FBI snares an American heir indicted for allegedly bankrolling anti-cop, pro-Hamas communist revolution

Chambers, who praised the Oct. 7 attacks as a ‘moment of hope,’ faces extradition after Spanish police detained him

FBI says it has identified ‘nefarious’ funding sources behind violent protests

FBI Co-Deputy Director Chris Raia says investigators have identified subjects tied to financing violent protest activity and are working to build prosecutable cases as the bureau follows the money.

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

The Justice Department and FBI have a new communist financier in their crosshairs for alleged financial crimes: James “Fergie” Cox Chambers Jr., the estranged bad-boy heir to the Cox cable empire.

On Friday, Spanish police detained Chambers on the luxury island of Ibiza, in response to an international arrest warrant, according to sources. Chambers is allegedly wanted for money laundering and providing support to Hamas, following years of financing anti-Israel and anti-West organizations and protests. The transnational network he helped fund and support is kicking in to cast him as a victim of the Trump administration’s “fascism,” while critics are cheering the arrest as long overdue.

A spokesman for Spain’s Balearic Islands police branch, which includes Ibiza in its jurisdiction, told Fox News Digital that a U.S. citizen was arrested on charges tied to an international arrest warrant Friday under an international arrest warrant seeking his extradition to the United States. The spokesman did not confirm the identity of the citizen, but sources told Fox News Digital that the individual is Chambers.

FBI SAYS NEW MISSION CENTER HAS IDENTIFIED ‘NEFARIOUS’ PROTEST FUNDING AND SUBJECTS

The police spokesman added that the individual is being held at the central jail in Ibiza pending a judicial decision that will be conducted by videoconference. Supporters now plan a “Free Fergie Chambers” protest on Tuesday at 7 p.m. outside the prison in Ibiza, demonstrating against “DEL FASCISMO DE TRUMP,” or the “TRUMP’S FASCISM IN PERSECUTING DEFENDERS OF THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE.”

A spokesperson for the FBI declined to comment. Chambers and his representatives couldn’t be reached for comment.

A convert to Islam, Chambers represents the fusion of socialist and communist activists with Islamist interests that seek the destruction of the West, free enterprise and the state of Israel and the rise of political Islam, communism and a new Palestinian state.

Chambers’ ideological comrades leaked news of the detention to trusted colleagues on far-left media platforms – some of which Chambers funds – and his communist, socialist and Islamist comrades are flooding social media to frame the narrative around the arrest as the Trump administration unfairly targeting Chambers.

The arrest is a significant move by the Trump administration as it targets far-left financiers allegedly engaged in supporting political violence. In this case, as in other investigations, federal authorities are following the money and investigating potential tax and financial crimes.

FBI Co-Deputy Director Chris Raia recently told Fox News Digital that investigators at the FBI’s Joint Mission Center have identified subjects tied to financing violent protest activity and have been building prosecutable cases.

Like Neville Roy Singham, the American tech tycoon accused of financing communist and far-left nonprofit organizations from his base in Shanghai, China, Chambers has made a name for himself as a financial backer of anti-Israel and anti-American causes around the world. As reported exclusively at Fox News Digital, the Justice Department has launched a grand jury investigation into Singham for alleged money laundering and other financial improprieties. It is currently prosecuting the Southern Poverty Law Center for alleged money laundering, bank fraud and wire fraud.

Chambers was born in 1985 in Brooklyn as James Cox Chambers Jr. to his father, James Cox Chambers, and mother, actress Lauren Hamilton. He is the great-grandson of James M. Cox, a former Ohio governor, 1920 Democratic presidential nominee and founder of the media company that became Cox Enterprises. Forbes estimates the Cox family empire is worth about $27 billion.

Chambers is now the estranged heir of Cox Enterprises, walking away from the family company in 2023 with a payout estimated at about $250 million after a falling out with his family over the company’s support for Atlanta’s controversial public safety training center, known by critics as “Cop City.” In April, a grand jury indicted three allegedAntifa-linked protesters accused of throwing firebombs at the general contractor of the Atlanta police training center.

Chambers openly redirected his fortune into communist collectives, bail and legal underwriting and groups engaged in hard-edged protest and property disruption.

Raised mostly in Brooklyn after his parents divorced, Chambers attended Saint Ann’s School and later enrolled at Bard College but didn’t graduate. He briefly worked for a Cox Enterprises subsidiary before operating gyms in Georgia and later became increasingly involved in left-wing activism following the anti-police protests in Ferguson, Mo., in 2014 and the demonstrations in Standing Rock, S.D., in 2016 against an oil pipeline.

Around 2019, Chambers established the “Berkshire Communists” collective in Alford, Mass., in a wealthy corner of western Massachusetts, where he built a commune, operated the Berkshire People’s Gym and launched a publication called “Combat Liberalism.”

Following the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attacks, Chambers became one of the most prominent financial backers of “Palestine Action,” later renamed “Unity of Fields,” while also funding legal defense efforts for activists involved in anti-Israel demonstrations and direct-action campaigns in the United Kingdom and the U.S.

He praised the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks as a “moment of hope and inspiration,” told Mother Jones that “the most important thing for the prosperity of humanity is the destruction of the US” and said, “I chant death to America every day.”

Local and national reporting place him behind the “Stop Cop City” opposition, bail after occupations and protests against Elbit Systems, a company that provides services to Israel, in Merrimack, N.H., and the U.K., and ongoing legal support for networks in the U.S. and U.K. led by the controversial “Palestine Action.”

After Alford, Mass., shut his Berkshire People’s Gym for zoning violations and law-enforcement scrutiny intensified, Chambers relocated to Tunis, in the North African nation of Tunisia.

In early February 2024, Chambers was photographed in his newly adopted city of Tunis in the North African nation of Tunisia, framing his narrative as a pious Muslim convert, with a red-and-white Palestinian kefiyyeh scarf draped over his shoulders, a black Muslim prayer cap on his head and a small beard on his face, a tradition that follows the sunnah, or practice, of Muhammad, the prophet of Islam.

The photo shoot included images of Chambers in Muslim prayer, at one point with his hands on his chest and at another point in “ruku” position, bent forward with his hands on his knees, staring at a point of concentration in front of him. In other shots, he walked by a local mosque, sat behind the wheel of a car with orange and green Muslim prayer beads, called “tazbi,” hanging on the rearview mirror. A pair of decorative boxing gloves with “RUSSIA” across the wrists, positioned on a red-and-white kefiyyeh spread along the dashboard.

Fergie Chambers walks his dogs in Tunis, Tunisia, on Feb. 8, 2024.(Chedly Ben Ibrahim/NurPhoto)

Unconventional for traditional Muslims, who don’t often have dogs as pets because of a fundamentalist interpretation of Islam that bars dogs as pets in the home, Chambers also was photographed smoking a cigarette and walking on the beach with two small dogs who look like bulldogs. He also wore tattoos, including a sickle-and-barbells on his left hand.

By May 2026, his social media posts placed him in Ireland. This month, the self-declared communist vacationed among the wealthy in Ibiza, is now sitting in prison.

    • Summary
    • Prosecutors subpoened text messages from phones used by top Trump officials
    • Lawmakers included 40 Republicans and four Democrats, senators say
    • Smith investigated Trump’s attempts to overturn 2020 election

WASHINGTON, July 14 (Reuters) – Former U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team reviewed text messages from 44 Republican and Democratic members of Congress during his investigation into President Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the ‌2020 election, according to two Republican senators.

The records came from subpoenas to the National Archives and Records Administration for text messages from government phones used by Trump and a range of his top officials and advisers from October 2020 until the end of his first term in January 2021.

The records Smith’s team obtained included text messages that 40 Republican lawmakers and four Democrats exchanged with Trump officials, according to Republican Senators Chuck Grassley, the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Ron Johnson, the chair of a Senate investigative panel.

The new material underscores how many senior figures in the U.S. government were examined as Smith investigated Trump’s attempts to reverse his defeat to Democrat Joe Biden in 2020 and his alleged mishandling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort during Biden’s administration. Both cases were dropped after Trump won the 2024 election.

The officials included Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows and then-Vice President Mike Pence, who resisted Trump’s pressure to block congressional certification of the 2020 election results.

Grassley released the material the day before Todd Blanche, who defended Trump against both of Smith’s cases, goes before the Senate Judiciary Committee on his nomination to serve as attorney general.

Justice Department officials under Trump have provided Grassley with a range of records as the president’s allies ‌press claims that Smith’s investigations were improperly aimed at damaging Trump’s political prospects and swept up sensitive information irrelevant to those cases.

“Jack Smith has answering to do, and I intend to have him before the Senate Judiciary Committee in the coming months to hold him accountable,” Grassley said in a statement.

    blob:https://www.reuters.com/4eef6744-ac4a-4f5d-88b1-cee2d7d2d2e6

A spokesperson for Smith did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the disclosures. Smith has argued in court filings and in public testimony that his investigations followed Justice Department policy and were not influenced by politics.

Grassley alleged that a prosecutor on Smith’s team appeared to violate Justice Department protocol by viewing the records before a separate team screened them for potential legal privileges. The filter review team was set up to separate material involving attorney communications with clients, not members of Congress.

Grassley previously revealed that Smith obtained call logs from some Republican senators around the time of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. FBI Director Kash Patel and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles also had their phone records subpoenaed as part of the classified documents probe, Reuters has reported.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

Subpoenaing phone records is a common step in federal investigations. Smith previously told a House committee that lawmakers’ phone records were necessary to investigate Trump’s pressure campaign to stop certification of his election defeat.

Scammers are using FaceTime to steal bank account passwords

A growing scam relies on Apple’s popular FaceTime video calling app, with fraudsters using the service to impersonate bank representatives and drain consumers’ bank accounts.

According to CBS News national consumer correspondent Ash-Har Quraishi, the scammers convince consumers they need to provide information to verify their bank accounts.

Victims first receive a text message about account activity related to their bank or credit card, and are asked to call a phone number included in the text. Other times, they receive a direct call from the scammer, who says they require “additional verification.”

That’s when the fraudster switches from an audio-only call to FaceTime. Victims are tricked into sharing their computer screens with the scammers while they log into their online banking accounts.

“The scammer watches in real-time while victims expose passwords, account numbers and even one-time security codes,” Quraishi said.

Apple says scammers are exploiting FaceTime because consumers generally trust the app and view it as a secure platform.

But the tech giant urges consumers who believe they’re receiving a suspicious FaceTime call from someone posing as a bank representative to take a screenshot of the call.

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/4c7becf4-726d-4cc3-bf7b-66b2efa37dfa

Tap the “info” button next to the call, hit “take live photo,” and send the image to reportfacetimefraud@apple.com.

Here are other tips consumers should heed to avoid falling victim to the FaceTime scam.

    • Never share your screen with anyone who calls out of the blue. Apple notes that it will not ask for a customer’s password, passcode or two-factor authentication code.
    • Urgency is a red flag. Anyone who pressures you to make money moves immediately should be considered suspicious. Hang up the call and contact your bank directly.
    • If you receive a scammy-seeming text, don’t call the number included in the message. To contact your bank, dial the number on the back of your bank card.

Spain reaches World Cup final with dominant 2-0 win over France

    July 14, 2026 / 8:03 PM EDT / CBS/AP

In a match Tuesday in Arlington, Texas, featuring two of soccer’s biggest heavyweights, Spain put in a masterful performance, frustrating France to the tune of a 2-0 win to advance to Sunday’s World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

It marks Spain’s second-ever appearance in a World Cup final. Spain won the tournament in 2010.

The Spaniards will face the winner of the second semifinal between defending champion Argentina and England, taking place Wednesday.

Spain’s first goal came in the 22nd minute when Mikel Oyarzabal scored from the penalty spot after Spain teenager Lamine Yamal drew a foul with a heady play.

France defender Lucas Digne was trying to collect the ball after an awkward bounce when Yamal, a day after his 19th birthday, raced in from behind to challenge in the penalty area. Yamal was kicked as Digne tried to clear the ball.

Oyarzabal’s fifth goal of this year’s World Cup marked the first time either of the two teams had trailed in their seven games in this tournament. It was his 30th goal in 60 international games for Spain.

A day after his 19th birthday, Yamal was denied a goal on a close offside call that came soon after Spain defender Pedro Porro’s give-and-go with Dani Olmo in the 58th minute had put Spain up 2-0. But it was Yamal’s smart play against a veteran defender that put Spain in the lead.

“We gave it our all in order just to go through to the final,” Porro said. “We knew that we’re a very tough team, we’re doing things really well. This is our team, it’s not about me.”

After a quarterfinal win over Belgium last Friday, Yamal said he believed France should fear Spain. Those words certainly proved true.

The loss means France failed in its effort to reach its third consecutive final, after winning in 2018 and losing in a penalty shootout to Argentina four years ago. They instead will play in the third-place game in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Saturday, the day before the final at MetLife Stadium across the river from New York City.

This win on soccer’s biggest stage marked the third summer in a row that Spain beat France in a tournament semifinal match. Yamal scored in a 2-1 win in the 2024 European Championship semifinals just days before his 17th birthday, and La Roja won 5-4 in Nations League play last year.

France had allowed only two goals in its first six games in this tournament. Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón has six shutouts while allowing only one goal in seven games so far.

Kylian Mbappé was in France’s starting lineup after the striker exited in the 77th minute of the team’s quarterfinal win over Morocco. Mbappé scored his eighth goal against Morocco and entered the semifinals even with Argentina superstar Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot. The 39-year-old Messi has a World Cup record 21 goals in his career, one more than the 27-year-old Mbappé.

Spain’s run at this year’s World Cup has extended its unbeaten streak in regular time to 37 matches (28 wins and nine draws) since March 2024. That broke the country’s previous record of 35 in a row from 2007-09.

The loss broke France’s record-matching streak of six consecutive World Cup wins, which also was accomplished in the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.

    2026-07-14T22:57:46.741Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/14/politics/trump-worst-predictions-iran-war

The Trump team’s worst predictions about the Iran war

    2026-07-14T22:57:46.741Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/14/politics/trump-worst-predictions-iran-war

One of the most infamous comments uttered about the Iraq War was then-Vice President Dick Cheney’s prediction, just days before it began, that US troops would be “greeted as liberators.”

Over the years, that comment came to epitomize not just the George W. Bush administration’s broken promises, but also its apparent failures to prepare for and understand the war it launched. How could it be so brazen as to directly predict something that turned out to be so wrong?

The Trump administration’s track record on the Iran war is rife with similar examples.

Over the last four and a half months, President Donald Trump and those around him have confidently made predictions that quickly fell apart.

It often seems as if Trump, especially, has little to no understanding of what’s happening with the war he launched. But the wayward comments are hardly limited to him.

Here are some of the biggest examples.

Trump shocked the world on Monday by confidently announcing the United States would soon take over the Strait of Hormuz as its “guardian” and charge countries 20% cargo fees for passage.

Except this ran counter to what the administration previously said about anyone charging tolls in the strait.

“We’ve always said a tolling system in the strait would be unacceptable. But we don’t just say that; the world has said that,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in May. He also said it would be “completely illegal, by the way.”

Trump’s Monday comments also raised the prospect of the United States needing a sustained military presence to control the strait for years to come.

In other words: It seemed wholly impractical. And sure enough, just a day later, Trump reversed himself.

That the president would even float something so extreme and difficult suggests he’s not terribly clued in on what’s feasible. CNN reported Tuesday that advisers scrambled to talk him out of the idea.

Trump predicted early on that the war would be brief, repeatedly projecting it would last “four to five weeks.”

More than two months in, on May 1, he said that it “shouldn’t be too long.”

It’s now been four and a half months — with no end in sight.

Many of the early predictions weren’t hard and fast, and the administration argues the war wasn’t ongoing during the ceasefire, which Trump has since declared over. But officials’ early projections suggested the administration anticipated a much different type of war.

After the US and Iran agreed on a memorandum of understanding last month, Trump and Vice President JD Vance spoke as if Iran’s leaders had suddenly seen the light.

“We’re dealing with people that I think are very rational people,” Trump said on June 16, adding that Iran’s leaders were “nice to deal with” and “not radicalized.”

Vance said in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper: “The coolest thing about the progress we’ve made over the last few weeks is that you see people within the Iranian system, senior leadership, even IRGC officials say, ‘You know what, we may have some animosity, we may have some mistrust, but we recognize the way that we’ve done business with the United States for 47 years is a mistake.’”

It didn’t take long for the administration to eat those words. After the ceasefire and the memorandum crumbled last week, Trump called Iran’s leaders “cuckoo,” “evil,” “sick,” “dirty players” and “scum.”

It’s not clear whether Trump and Vance believed what they were saying earlier or whether they were just saying nice things.

But either way, their comments quickly came to look pollyannaish — as many predicted at the time.

When he first launched strikes on Iran in late February, Trump was focused on the idea that the Iranian people could rise up and change their regime.

He even concluded his announcement that night by focusing on the idea.

“I call upon all Iranian patriots who yearn for freedom to seize this moment — to be brave, be bold, be heroic, and take back your country,” Trump said. “America is with you. I made a promise to you, and I fulfilled that promise. The rest will be up to you, but we’ll be there to help.”

But when the popular uprising didn’t happen, Trump quickly dropped the subject — as if it was never his goal to begin with. And today, he’s talking as though it were unthinkable.

“Unless they could be completely armed, I never thought they’d have that kind of an uprising, because these people are violent,” Trump told radio host Hugh Hewitt on Monday. “Their so-called leadership is very violent.”

But Trump clearly thought it was a possibility at one point. In fact, it was a major point of emphasis.

When Iran made its big move to gain leverage by shutting the Strait of Hormuz, the administration initially shrugged it off and suggested it couldn’t possibly last.

“It’s something we’re dealing with; we have been dealing with it,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on March 13. He added that people “don’t need to worry about it.”

A few days earlier, on March 9, Trump said the strait “doesn’t really affect us” because “we have so much oil.”

“The Strait of Hormuz is going to remain safe,” Trump added.

The strait has not remained — or been consistently — safe. And while it’s true that other countries have been more impacted by Iran shutting it down, the closure has also wrought significant damage on the US economy.

It’s also giving Iran major leverage over Trump.

Related to its naiveté about the strait, the administration has made many wayward assurances about gas prices.

In an interview with Tapper on March 8, Energy Secretary Chris Wright said gas prices would be back under $3 per gallon “before too long.”

Pressed on precisely when, Wright said that, even in the “worst case,” it would be “weeks” rather than “months.”

It’s been even worse than Wright’s worst-case scenario. More than four months later, gas still isn’t under $3 per gallon. Prices haven’t fallen below $3.70 in the national average, according to Gas Buddy, and they’re now spiking again after renewed hostilities.

The bad prediction underlines how the administration didn’t seem to fully anticipate just how much damage Iran could do by closing the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump has said dozens of times that Tehran was “begging” for a deal, it was “desperate” and “dying” to make one, and that it wanted a deal “so badly” and “very badly.”

He also routinely predicted a deal was just around the corner.

But the events of the past three months have shown the opposite. Iran has not only held out for very significant concessions, it’s also scuttled what seemed to be pretty favorable terms in last month’s memorandum of understanding.

Perhaps it’s some wishful thinking or spin from Trump, but it suggests he doesn’t understand the motivations of his adversary.

From the war’s earliest days, Trump and Hegseth claimed Iran’s military defeat was so absolute that the United States could basically fly anywhere it wanted to without risk.

At a March 4 briefing, Hegseth claimed the US and Israel “will have complete control of Iranian skies” within a week.

“And Iran will be able to do nothing about it,” Hegseth said.

Trump repeated in the weeks that followed that Iran “can’t do a thing about it.”

“They have no anti-aircraft equipment. Their radar is 100% annihilated,” Trump said. “We are unstoppable as a military force.”

But by early April, Iran managed to take down two US aircraft.
