    Trump’s dilemma on Iran

President Donald Trump attends the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace at the US Institute of Peace in Washington, DC, on Thursday.

    Saul Loeb/AFP/Getty Images

It’s been more than a month since President Donald Trump declared a red line on Iran.

He said that if Iran shot protesters, “we’ll be hitting them very hard where it hurts.” He told protesters to press on, with the understanding that “HELP IS ON ITS WAY.”

Trump hasn’t made good on those promises. In mid-January, he claimed the “killing has stopped,” but Iran continued killing protesters. In the weeks since, the president largely stopped talking about protesters and shifted to talking about why Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon — repeatedly threatening “bad things” if it doesn’t strike a deal.

The situation finally appears to be coming to a head, with Trump signaling a decision is arriving shortly. But Trump’s choice amounts to this: He can either enforce his red line — however belatedly — or do something quite politically fraught.

Because that’s what striking Iran would be.

To catch up: On Thursday — two days after the latest indirect talks between the US and Iran in Geneva — Trump floated his latest potential timeline for action. “You’re going to be finding out over the next, probably, 10 days,” he said at the inaugural meeting of his Board of Peace.

The US is ready to strike Iran as early as this weekend, CNN reported Wednesday, although Trump has not made a final decision, and he’s privately argued both for and against military action while surveying his advisers and allies.

Americans have largely been willing to entertain Trump’s foreign strikes, whether that’s his attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites in June, his extrajudicial strikes on alleged drug boats starting in the fall, or his ouster of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro last month. These weren’t and aren’t popular by any means, but they weren’t albatrosses either.

Iran presents a greater political risk.

Three polls last month showed the American people were strongly against further involvement in Iran. In each case, it was at least a 2-to-1 margin:

    • They opposed missile strikes in response to Iran’s crackdown on protesters 42%-16%, per an Ipsos poll. (That poll showed 4 in 10 were neutral.)
    • They opposed military action to support the protesters 67%-33% in a CBS News-YouGov survey.
    • Registered voters in a Quinnipiac University poll said 70%-18% that the United States should not get involved even if protesters were killed.

Those are three pretty strong rejections of Trump’s red line. Even Republicans were against the idea in that last poll, 53-35%.

And those numbers were especially striking because some of the same pollsters showed Americans were much more evenly split on Trump’s initial Iran strikes. Quinnipiac showed twice as much support — 42% among registered voters — for the US strikes in June days after they happened.

    So what gives?

Well, something we also saw in those polls last June was a distinct lack of patience — and fear — about what deeper involvement would mean.

In both the earlier CBS and Quinnipiac polls, about 8 in 10 respondents were at least “somewhat” concerned about a wider war, including 6 in 10 Republicans.

The CBS poll showed 71% of Americans thought the strikes would cause Iran to launch attacks against the United States.

A Reuters-Ipsos poll showed 79% worried at least “somewhat” about Iran targeting US civilians in response.

And Americans weren’t even that convinced the limited strikes were productive. They said 58%-27% that the strikes were actually likely to make Iran more of a threat to the United States, according to a CNN poll.

The prevailing picture from those numbers is that Americans were hardly enamored with the strikes. Indeed, they didn’t necessarily see the point and feared what the strikes could portend. But perhaps because the strikes were so short-lived, they were popular enough.

Polling on the Maduro operation in Venezuela has been similar, seemingly in part because the mission was also short-lived. And the polling on US actions in Venezuela also showed pretty substantial skepticism about deeper involvement in the country’s future.

We could find out in the coming days how serious Trump is about enforcing his red line on Iran. What’s clear is that he set himself up for a tough political choice.

A president who is already dealing with increasingly deep unpopularity is now considering making good on a quite unpopular pledge.

Giant banner of Donald Trump hung at Justice Department headquarters

By Hannah Rabinowitz, 9 min ago | PUBLISHED Feb 19, 2026, 2:56 PM ET

A large banner of Donald Trump was hung outside of the Justice Department headquarters in Washington, DC, on Thursday, emphasizing the White House’s control over the nation’s top law enforcement branch that once pursued criminal prosecutions against the president.

The image of Trump in shades of blue is a remarkable addition to the storied Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building, which is occupied by a department that traditionally has made painstaking efforts to separate itself from politics.

Since Trump retook office last year, the Justice Department has faced repeated accusations of targeting the president’s perceived enemies on his behalf. Those prosecutions include that of former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General and Letitia James, as well as investigations into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and several Democratic representatives who recorded a video urging service members to disobey any illegal orders.

Similar banners of Trump’s face have been draped across other federal departments including the Department of Labor and the Department of Agriculture, each with their own text: “American workers first” and “growing America,” respectively.

The new sign at the Justice Department reads “make America safe again,” the slogan of the Trump administration’s violent crime crackdown.

The Trump Justice Department has repeatedly stated that its investigations under Trump are not political, and said that the department is course-correcting from alleged “weaponization” under the previous administration.

Chief among their examples are the two federal criminal cases brought against Trump by former special Jack Smith for retaining classified documents in his home at Mar-a-Lago and for his alleged role in instigating the 2021 Capitol riot. The classified documents case was dismissed by a judge, and the election interference case was dropped when he won election in November 2020.

CNN has reached out the Justice Department for comment on the banner.

The U.S. is putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to the Board of Peace. President Donald Trump announced during the inaugural meeting of the board, that the U.S. was committing to contribute $10 billion to the board.

“The Board of Peace is showing how a better future can be built, starting right here in this room,” Trump said on Thursday. “I want to let you know that the United States is going to make a contribution of $10 billion to the Board of Peace… and we’ve had great support for that number.”

The president said that the contribution “sounds like a lot, but it’s a very small number” when compared to the cost of war. Trump estimated that the $10 billion commitment was equivalent to the cost of two weeks of fighting.

“Together, we can achieve the dream of bringing lasting harmony to a region tortured by centuries of war, suffering and carnage,” Trump added, saying that he hoped it could serve as inspiration for other nations entangled in conflicts that seem unending.

The Board of Peace was set up as part of the Trump administration’s plans to end the Israel-Hamas war and to rebuild Gaza. Several countries have committed to joining the board, including Argentina, Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Belarus, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Egypt, El Salvador, Hungary, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kuwait, Morocco, Mongolia, Pakistan, Paraguay, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

While touting the significance of the board, Trump also encouraged more nations to join not just the initiative, but in a greater effort towards peace, singling out Iran in particular.

“And now is the time for Iran to join us on a path that will complete what we’re doing. And if they join us, that’ll be great. If they don’t join us, that’ll be great too, but it will be a very different path,” Trump said. “They cannot continue to threaten the stability of the entire region, and they must make a deal.”

TRUMP MEETS NETANYAHU, SAYS HE WANTS IRAN DEAL BUT REMINDS TEHRAN OF ‘MIDNIGHT HAMMER’ OPERATION

The president warned that “bad things” would happen if Iran did not make a deal.

“Iran is a hot spot right now. And they’re meeting and they have a good relationship with the representatives of Iran,” Trump said. “And, you know, good talks are being had. It’s proven to be over the years, not easy to make a meaningful deal with them. And we have to make a meaningful deal. Otherwise, bad things happen. But we have to make a meaningful deal.”

Representatives of the U.S. and Iran recently participated in indirect nuclear talks in Oman, with both sides meeting with Omani foreign minister Badr al-Busaidi. Following the indirect talks, which he said were “very good,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that Iran wanted to make “a deal very badly.”

“They know the consequences if they don’t make a deal. The consequences are very steep,” Trump told reporters earlier this month.

Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi also expressed optimism after the indirect talks, which he said were “a good start.”

“After a long period without dialogue, our viewpoints were conveyed, and our concerns were expressed. Our interests, the rights of the Iranian people, and all matters that needed to be stated were presented in a very positive atmosphere, and the other side’s views were also heard,” Araghchi said at the time.

“It was a good start, but its continuation depends on consultations in our respective capitals and deciding on how to proceed,” he added.

Hegseth invited pastor who calls for Christian theocracy to lead Pentagon prayer service

PUBLISHED Feb 19, 2026, 1:17 PM ET / By Kaanita Iyer, Haley Britzky

A controversial pastor who supports repealing women’s right to vote and believes homosexuality should be a crime led a worship service at the Pentagon this week, saying he was invited by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

During a 15-minute sermon in the Pentagon’s auditorium and broadcast live on the department’s internal TV network, Douglas Wilson delivered a sermon sprinkled with military-themed jokes about putting Jesus Christ first and what Jesus can accomplish through believers.

“God can do what he likes, and as we should know by now, what he likes to do is to take the most unlikely materials and do something glorious with it,” Wilson said, according to video of the sermon obtained by CNN. “Take a prayer meeting at the Pentagon for a possible example. Many stranger things have happened. God is great.”

A source who attended the service told CNN Wilson’s message was “pretty vanilla” and steered clear of political rhetoric. Attendees didn’t hear Wilson’s stance on women in the military and in combat.

The service from Wilson, a self-described Christian nationalist, was part of a regular monthly Christian worship series Hegseth started at the department last summer that critics say has underscored the erosion of the separation of church and state under the Trump administration.

The pastor, who founded his church in Moscow, Idaho, in the 1970s and has since grown it to a network of more than 150 churches internationally, is part of an ascendant group of Christian religious leaders finding influence among MAGA conservatives. Hegseth is the pastor’s most prominent and public follower in the Trump administration.

Wilson has publicly described his belief in a patriarchal society where women are expected to submit to their husbands and supports repealing the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote. Women are banned from leadership positions in his church and are not allowed to vote in congregational decisions.

He has also advocated for the idea that the US should adopt a Christian theocracy and adhere to a biblical interpretation of society.

[Related article CNN Inside one pastor’s crusade for Christian domination in the age of Trump 13 min read]

Hegseth is a member of one of Wilson’s churches in Tennessee and has said he moved to the state in 2022 to send his kids to a school that’s part of a Christian network that Wilson helped found.

In a previous statement to CNN, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said: “The Secretary is a proud member of a church affiliated with the Congregation of Reformed Evangelical Churches, which was founded by Pastor Doug Wilson. The Secretary very much appreciates many of Mr. Wilson’s writings and teachings.”

The Pentagon’s rapid response X account posted photos confirming Wilson’s attendance on Tuesday.

Hegseth joined Wilson on stage after his sermon, but said he had been running from another meeting and missed the pastor’s remarks.

Kris Fuhr, co-founder of the Women in the Service Coalition, said bringing Wilson to the Pentagon was “beyond inappropriate” given his well-established views on the treatment of women and women in the military.

“It was an absolute insult to everyone that room, that someone who represents views that are a total 180 from Army values would be allowed to speak at a denominational-specific, Christian religious service in the Pentagon,” Fuhr said. “When you have a secretary of defense who is so strongly influenced by someone who thinks only white men are worthy, you now have a Secretary of Defense who is not looking for the best and the brightest across his entire talent pool.”

The source who attended the sermon said this is a “totally voluntary prayer service” and that Wilson is “one of many (preachers) over the last year who have come from several different Protestant denominations.”

They said there are services for other religions and that they’ve seen Jewish and Buddhist services advertised as well.

The Pentagon is one of several government agencies that have moved to open meetings with a prayer, host regular faith services and post Bible verses and Christian imagery on social media since President Donald Trump returned to office last year.

When asked Thursday about Hegseth’s monthly prayer service and criticism that it is eroding the longstanding tradition of separation of church and state, Wilson told CNN, “The actions taken by the Secretary of War in starting this prayer service are disrupting the ‘longstanding separation of church and state,’ but only if ‘longstanding’ is limited to recent decades.”

“From the Founding of the republic it was not so,” Wilson added. “Worship services used to be held in the Capitol building, starting before the building was completed, and lasting up until the Civil War. Worshipers in that place included such worthies as Jefferson and Madison.”

CNN has reached out to the Department of Defense for comment.

Democrats and Republicans disagree about a lot but GOP Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt and Democratic North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein agree it’s too difficult to build new housing. Stitt told CNN’s Dana Bash, “part of the American Dream is home ownership… We need to allow developers to create lots quicker.” While they disagree on President Trump’s election actions, they believe voting is best left to the states. “The federal government should not be administering elections. That’s a state function,” Stein said.

Pro-Trump Texas woman who made series of violent threats is missing after failing to report to prison

    February 19, 2026 / 1:13 PM EST / CBS News

Washington— Abigail Shry’s verbal threats against public officials have been racist, violent and detailed. Her targets have included a federal judge in Washington, a Democrat in the House and the Texas Capitol. She allegedly once said she would “annihilate” the Texas government in an “armed attack” that would be more violent than the Jan. 6 insurrection.

At one point, a federal prosecutor said Shry was “unmoored” and posed a danger.

Now there’s a new concern: The feds can’t find her.

Shry was supposed to report to prison Tuesday in Florida, but she failed to show up and has gone on the lam. A judge has issued a bench warrant for federal agents to find and arrest her.

Shry was due to begin serving a 27-month federal prison sentence in her most recent threat case. She pleaded guilty in November 2024 to a federal charge in Texas for a phone message she left in the Washington, D.C., chambers of Judge Tanya Chutkan.

The threat came hours after Chutkan was assigned to oversee President Trump’s 2020 election conspiracy case in August 2023. According to the Justice Department, Shry called Chutkan a “stupid slave [epithet]” and said, “If Trump doesn’t get elected in 2024, we’re coming to kill you. So tread lightly.”

Shry, who has lived in Alvin, Texas, south of Houston, was also accused of threatening then-Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a Democrat. Court documents said Shry left a phone message saying she wanted to kill Lee and would target her “personally, publicly, your family, all of it.” Lee died by natural causes 11 months later.

Shry had been seeking to delay her federal prison term in a series of motions in court this year. But a judge denied those requests.

CBS News has learned Shry was scheduled to self-surrender to the federal correctional facility in Tallahassee, Florida, on Tuesday, but did not show. A federal judge in Houston has ordered a warrant for her arrest.

A CBS News review of Texas state court records found Shry was also under investigation for threats against Texas legislators in 2023, during impeachment proceedings against Trump ally and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Shry pleaded no contest to making the threats and reached a plea agreement to serve a 90-day jail term, according to court filings.

State police in Texas alleged Shry left a phone threat in July 2023 on the voicemail systems of two Houston-area state senators. Police said the messages warned that there would be “war on the Texas Capitol” if Paxton was impeached.

“Shry specifically states that there would be an armed attack and it would not be non-violent like the January 6th protests at the U.S. Capitol,” police said. They said Shry also warned that “we will take weapons, come to Austin and annihilate the government.”

According to Texas police, Shry had also made a separate set of threats against members of Congress in 2023. A police report reviewed by CBS News said Shry “contacted several U.S. elected officials in Congress and has made similar threats towards them pertaining to if Donald Trump is not reelected as president, they will also see an attack of the U.S. Capitol.”

Shry’s failure to report to federal prison will further complicate her freedom and expose her to greater legal jeopardy. Greg Rosen, a former federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C., told CBS News that Shry risks facing further criminal proceedings.

“Failing to self-surrender or appear undermines the trust judges place in defendants when granting them release in the first instance,” Rosen said. “It also creates additional criminal exposure under Title 18 of the federal code — something prosecutors may pursue both to deter future flight and to account for the resources required to apprehend them.”

At a detention hearing for Shry in August 2023, in the days after Shry’s threat against Chutkan, a federal prosecutor expressed concern that Shry’s threats would escalate.

“Judge, my greatest concern in this case is that she starts watching Fox News again, gets herself spun up, she goes out, she gets a case of beer, continues to get herself spun up,” the prosecutor said, according to a transcript of the hearing. “There’s no way to gauge what’s going to happen here, except to look at what she’s done in the past six months.”

“In this particular instance,” the prosecutor then told the judge, “I don’t want to be that FBI agent that didn’t go check on Lee Harvey Oswald two days before John Kennedy was assassinated. That happened. And that’s the footnote in history. And I’m standing here before you today because this defendant is unmoored and I believe that there’s going to be more.”

Shry’s defense attorneys did not immediately respond to a request for comment. One of those attorneys filed a motion Wednesday to withdraw from the case, after Shry failed to surrender.

Epstein probe leader Comer says ‘no one is above the law’ after ex-Prince Andrew arrest

Former Prince Andrew was arrested in the UK on suspicion of misconduct in public office

    Published February 19, 2026 11:14am EST

The senior lawmaker leading the U.S. House of Representatives investigation of Jeffrey Epstein is the latest high-profile official to sound off on the arrest of former British royal Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., reiterated the need for accountability and lauded the Trump administration’s commitment to releasing its own information on Epstein.

“There must be accountability for anyone who was involved in Jeffrey Epstein’s horrific crimes,” Comer told Fox News Digital. “The Justice Department’s transparency is ensuring that no one is above the law — even British royalty.”

News first broke of the former Prince Andrew’s arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office in the early hours of Thursday morning on the U.S. East Coast.

It comes after a British police department said it was looking into a complaint that Andrew shared confidential information with Epstein, according to the BBC.

While he has denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein, Andrew was one of the late pedophile’s most well-known associates through the years.

Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s earliest and most vocal accusers, alleged in a memoir that Andrew had sex with her when she was a minor.

Giuffre died of suicide in April of last year. Epstein died of suicide in a Manhattan jail while awaiting trial in 2019.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., one of the earliest U.S. lawmakers to call for Andrew’s arrest in October 2025, told Fox News Digital, “If you’re watching a former prince get arrested today, remember: four Republicans refused to flinch, refused to fold, and forced the Epstein files into the light.”

“Courage has consequences. So does corruption,” said Mace, also a House Oversight Committee member.

She was one of four House Republicans who voted with Democrats to force a vote on mandating that the Department of Justice (DOJ) release all of its files related to Epstein’s case. The subsequent House vote was nearly unanimous, with just one GOP lawmaker voting against it.

Meanwhile, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee sounded off with renewed calls for accountability for other alleged Epstein associates.

Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, D-Va., said Andrew “appears repeatedly in the documents we have uncovered as having knowledge of Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes and is specifically named by victims as someone who engaged in wrongdoing.”

“We hope today’s arrest will lead to answers and show that there will be accountability even if you hide, regardless of how rich and powerful you are,” he said in a statement.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., wrote on X, “This is exactly the kind of accountability we need from the Department of Justice. It’s time to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

Exclusive: DHS admits its website showcasing the ‘worst of the worst’ immigrants was rife with errors

    Immigration Federal agencies Donald Trump

The Department of Homeland Security admitted that its website featuring what it calls the “worst of the worst” arrested immigrants was rife with errors and changed the site this week after receiving questions from CNN about it.

DHS created the website in December and the agency, its secretary Kristi Noem and the White House have all heavily promoted it on social media as the Trump administration has sought to justify its aggressive and heavily scrutinized immigration enforcement operations.

The website currently lists about 25,000 people, along with the crimes the agency says they were arrested for or convicted of — including many who were initially linked only to relatively minor offenses.

But DHS this week conceded its website was filled with inaccuracies. After receiving questions about a CNN analysis of the website, a DHS spokesperson admitted on Tuesday that the charges against hundreds of immigrants listed on the website were described incorrectly by the agency.

The spokesperson attributed the inaccuracies to a “glitch” that they said DHS worked to remedy. The spokesperson said on Wednesday that the glitch had been “resolved.”

A CNN review of the website found that thousands of the people listed on the website were described by the agency as being convicted of or arrested for serious charges — including sex crimes or different forms of homicide. But hundreds more who DHS considered the “worst of the worst” were described as being arrested for or convicted of far less serious crimes, including single charges of traffic offenses, marijuana possession or illegal reentry, a federal felony that involves someone reentering the United States after having been previously deported.

CNN could not independently verify the descriptions of each of the thousands of people listed on the website.

Kristi Noem, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, during a news conference in Nogales, Arizona, US, on February 4, 2026.

    Ash Ponders/Bloomberg/Getty Images

Asked whether drawing an equivalence between traffic offenders and killers might undermine the agency’s public messaging about its operations, DHS said that many of those the agency listed with single minor crimes had actually been arrested for or convicted of multiple crimes, some of which were more serious: “This is a glitch on the WOW website the impacted about 5% of the entries.”

“Many of these who are listed as traffic offense and illegal reentry, which is a felony, have additional crimes,” the spokesperson said, adding the agency was working “to fix the issue.” The spokesperson did not answer questions about what type of glitch could cause the people on the website to be described incorrectly.

“All of these individuals have been arrested by ICE and all of them committed crimes breaking our nation’s laws, including some who had felonies for illegal re-entry,” the spokesperson said.

Both the White House and DHS have faced intense scrutiny for using false or misleading claims about some immigrants as a pretext to justify enforcement operations, or describing certain incidents in ways which were later contradicted by video or statements from local officials.

Following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis last month, officials including Noem and White House immigration policy architect Stephen Miller rushed to describe Pretti as “a domestic terrorist” who brandished his gun and intended to massacre law enforcement.

Video later showed that Pretti never brandished the gun that he was carrying when he was shot, and both Miller and Noem blamed their premature descriptions of Pretti on information they received from officers on the ground.

This also isn’t the first time that the Trump administration has acknowledged its descriptions of some immigrants they described as the “worst of the worst” were inaccurate.

In another instance, first reported by NOTUS, the White House conceded it posted a picture of a man who the administration erroneously claimed had been convicted of a sex crime involving a child. (A White House official said the error has been corrected and the administration will continue publicizing “the dangerous criminal illegal aliens being removed from our streets.”)

Taking credit for people likely already in custody

The DHS “worst of the worst” website also includes immigrants’ countries of origin and the city where they were arrested. CNN’s analysis of the site shows that some of the locations representing the greatest number of arrests are relatively small cities – but they contain large prisons, a potential indication that those detained were already in federal prison or had been transferred from state custody. In those cases, that could undercut the agency’s claim that they were “public safety threats” who were “lurking” in communities.

The city representing the most arrests is Conroe, Texas, which is about 40 miles north of Houston and has an estimated population of about 114,000. That city is home to the Joe Corley Processing Center, a privately owned detention facility that Immigration and Customs Enforcement uses to house immigrants. Other top cities, including Lompoc, California, Yazoo City, Mississippi, and Eden, Texas, have relatively small populations, but large federal detention centers.

The social media feeds of DHS, Noem and the White House have displayed a stream of mugshots of people the administration says it has taken off the streets during Operation Metro Surge, the immigration crackdown it has been conducting in the Twin Cities over the last two months. (The administration is now winding down its Minnesota immigration surge, though it is keeping a small footprint of officers there.)

But local officials in Minnesota have accused DHS of padding their publicized arrest numbers by taking credit for arrests made by local law enforcement, who were then transferred to immigration authorities through routine processes.

“This is no longer a simple misunderstanding,” Minnesota Department of Corrections Commissioner Paul Schnell said during a news conference last month.

At best, Schnell said, “DHS fundamentally misunderstands Minnesota’s correctional system.”

“At worst,” he added, “it is pure propaganda, numbers released without evidence to stoke fear rather than inform the public.”

A DHS spokesperson said in a statement: “All of these individuals have been arrested by ICE and placed in removal proceedings.”

“Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, we are not going to allow criminals to be released from jails and back into our communities,” the spokesperson said.

Among the people who DHS chooses to label the “worst of the worst,” almost half are from Mexico. More than 2,100 are from Honduras; Guatemala and Cuba account for about 1,900 each; El Salvador accounts for almost 1,200; while Iran, China, Nicaragua, Haiti and Jamaica account for scores of people each. Several dozen are from Somalia – a country that President Donald Trump has denigrated repeatedly and which has been a large focus of the administration’s recent crackdown in Minneapolis, where there is a large Somali diaspora.

‘That population is not out there’

It is not uncommon for law enforcement agencies large and small to publicize their efforts or arrests — and DHS has come under immense pressure from the Trump administration to boost its public-relations profile and publicize arrests.

“Show the numbers, names, and faces of the violent criminals, and show them NOW,” the president wrote on Truth Social last month. “The people will start supporting the patriots of ICE, instead of the highly paid troublemakers, anarchists, and agitators! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.”

But the problem, critics say, is that the proportion of “violent criminals” convicted of charges where there is a nexus to public safety is smaller than the administration presents, even if DHS does adjust its list to reflect a larger number of violent offenders.

“The vast majority of so-called criminal aliens are individuals charged with or convicted of traffic offenses, DUIs and immigration-related offenses,” said John Sandweg, who served as acting ICE director during the Obama administration.

“That was the challenge we faced during the Obama administration,” he added. “I’ll just put it this way – and I spent every day working on this – we are saying we are focused on the worst of the worst, we’re focused on serious criminals, that’s what our mission is, to get them off the streets.”

But when it comes to the scale of the problem as described by the Trump administration, Sandweg said, “That population is not out there. It’s just not there.”

“Gov. Spanberger has always put service over politics — defending our national security and delivering real results for working families,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement. “She knows Americans want lower costs, safer communities, and a stronger democracy — not chaos and corruption. Gov. Spanberger will lay out a clear path forward: lower everyday costs, protect healthcare, and defend the freedoms that define who we are as a nation.”

Mr. Trump is set to deliver the State of the Union address on Feb. 24. The address will mark his first State of the Union of his second term. The president addressed a joint session of Congress in March of last year, but it was not considered a formal State of the Union address.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
