Fed’s Kashkari: Hassett comments about Fed researchers represent another attack on independence

    February 19, 2026 4:09 PM UTC / Reuters

WASHINGTON, Feb 19 (Reuters) – The call by a top Trump administration official for New York Federal Reserve staff to “be disciplined” for recent research on tariffs was just the latest move by the administration to undermine the independence of the central bank, Minneapolis Fed president Neel Kashkari said on Thursday.

In a Wednesday CNBC interview, top administration economic adviser Kevin Hassett called recent New York Fed research “shoddy” in its conclusion that roughly 90% of the cost of the administration’s import tariffs were being paid by the U.S. The analysis, consistent with estimates by other economists and organizations, included among its authors a top economist in the New York Fed’s research division and a Columbia University professor who have collaborated together on several pieces of research on international prices and tariff impacts.

“This is just another step to try to compromise the Fed’s independence. Over the past year we’ve seen multiple attempts,” Kashkari said at an economic event in North Dakota, including the Department of Justice’s issuance of a grand jury subpoena of the Fed and the opening of a related criminal investigation of Fed chair Jerome Powell. President Donald Trump is also trying to fire Fed governor Lisa Cook, an issue pending before the U.S. Supreme Court.

The dispute “is really about monetary policy. We are doing our very best to make the best assessment of the economy based on data and analysis,” Kashkari said, at a moment when Trump has demanded that interest rates be slashed as low as 1%. The Fed’s current policy rate of interest is set in a range from 3.5% to 3.75%, and further cuts are unlikely for now given inflation is roughly a percentage point above the Fed’s 2% target.

“Politicians, conservative and liberal, would rather have monetary policy that serves their political needs in the moment,” Kashkari said, with Trump having cited both a desire for the government to borrow money more cheaply and to lower home mortgage interest rates among his reasons for wanting the Fed to cut.

The administration’s moves against the Fed, however, have led to some political blowback and complicated the confirmation as Fed chair of Kevin Warsh, who Trump has nominated to replace current Chair Jerome Powell when his term leading the central bank ends in May. Some Republican senators have demanded the criminal probe of Powell be dropped before they will allow Warsh’s nomination to proceed.

Kashkari said the role of the research departments at the 12 regional Fed banks was central to how the institution operates.

    Ad Break Coming Up!

“All 12 reserve banks have independent research departments that are always studying the economy,” Kashkari said. “That is how we’re trying to get better and learn.”

U.S. star Jordan Stolz takes silver in 1,500-meter speedskating at Winter Olympics after winning 2 gold medals

    February 19, 2026 / 12:28 PM EST / CBS News

American speedskater Jordan Stolz came just short of his third Olympic gold on Thursday, losing out to China’s Ning Zhongyan in the men’s 1,500-meter race and instead taking silver.

Stolz was initially favored to win the race but ultimately came up about one second too slow, after Zhongyan finished the event in 1:41.98 and set an Olympic record. Competing in the anticipated final heat of the 1,500-meter, Stolz ended with a time of 1:42.75.

Ning could be seen jumping up excitedly from the sidelines once Stolz crossed the finish line. His gold in this event followed two bronze medals for Ning in this Olympics, in the 1,000-meter and team competitions. The Netherlands’ Kjeld Nuis took the bronze medal in the 1,500, after Stolz.

Had Stolz taken first place, the 21-year-old would have become only the second U.S. athlete in history to collect at least three gold medals in any sport during a single Winter Games, decades after American skater Eric Heiden won five gold medals at the 1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York.

Stolz won gold in the men’s 1,000-meter and 500-meter speedskating events and set Olympic records in both races. His victory in the 1.000-meters marked the first medal for an American in that event since 2010. He became the first American since Heiden to medal twice in speedskating when he won the latter race over the weekend.

After securing his first gold in the 1,000-meter, Stolz told CBS News that he expected his next events to be some of his best of the year.

“That’s what I’m looking for,” Stolz said.

These are Stolz’s second Winter Games, after he made his debut in Beijing and won 14th place in the 1,000-meter and 13th place in the 500-meter. Outside of the Olympics, he is the world record-holder for the 1,000-meter speed skate and the reigning two-time World Cup champion in the distance.

Stolz is set to compete in his fourth and final event of the Milan Cortino Games, the mass start, this Saturday.

Minnesota judge holds federal attorney in civil contempt, a first in Trump’s second term

    Published Feb 19, 2026, 1:05 PM ET / Updated Feb 19, 2026, 2:19 PM ET / Source: CNN

A federal judge in Minnesota held a Trump administration attorney in civil contempt for “flagrant disobedience of court orders” in the case of a noncitizen swept up in the immigration crackdown there earlier this year.

The contempt finding by US District Judge Laura Provinzino on Wednesday appears to mark the first time a federal attorney has faced court-ordered sanctions during President Donald Trump’s second term.

It comes as judges in the Twin Cities and elsewhere have grown increasingly impatient with the administration’s repeated violations of court orders, particularly in fast-moving immigration cases.

The appointee of former President Joe Biden said that starting Friday, the lawyer, Matthew Isihara, must pay $500 each day that the immigrant is not given back identification documents that weren’t initially returned to him when he was released last week from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, as she had ordered.

As Provinzino imposed the sanction, she brushed aside Isihara’s attempt to explain that the violation wasn’t intentional, but instead a result of the case slipping through the cracks amid an “enormous volume of cases” stemming from Operation Metro Surge.

“The government’s understaffing and high caseload is a problem of its own making and absolutely does not justify flagrant disobedience of court orders,” the judge said during a hearing Wednesday, according to a transcript obtained by CNN.

“I don’t believe I need to do additional hand-holding on this. I think it’s clear what needs to happen,” she added. “Petitioner needs to get his documents immediately, and there will be a $500 sanction any day beyond tomorrow that they are not received by his attorney.”

CNN has reached out to the Justice Department for comment.

Isihara is a military attorney who went to the Twin Cities to help the Justice Department handle a flood of immigration cases brought by noncitizens seeking to be released from ICE custody, which had overwhelmed its team on the ground, leading to non-compliance issues in other cases.

Provinzino on February 9 ordered the government to release the man, a Mexican national who had lived in Minnesota since 2018, after she determined that he was being unlawfully detained. Her order mandated that he be released in Minnesota no later than February 13 and that all his property be handed over to him. But the government flouted that order in three different ways, the judge said, including by releasing him in Texas, where he was being held, and not giving him back his identification documents.

“It’s very troubling, in the court’s review of this record,” the judge said as she ticked through the various violations. She noted later that Isihara and his colleagues hadn’t done any work on the case until that morning.

“It’s a capacity issue, your honor, and that’s the fundamental underlying issue,” Isihara said. “It’s not any willful attempt to defy the court.”

Provinzino and her colleagues on the bench in Minnesota had regularly been threatening to hold Justice Department lawyers or immigration officials in civil contempt in recent weeks as non-compliance issues in dozens of cases stemming from Operation Metro Surge continued to add up. But the monetary sanctions represent a turning point.

“We’ve seen other cases in which district judges have opened more formal contempt proceedings, but this is the first time we’ve seen a court directly use its coercive power to try to compel immediate compliance with a court order,” said Steve Vladeck, CNN legal analyst and professor at Georgetown University Law Center.

“The notion that lawyers must themselves pay a price for their client’s non-compliance with court orders is hardly new, but it may be long overdue in the context of the current administration,” Vladeck added.

Isihara’s explanation to the judge mirrored similar statements made earlier this month by a different Trump administration lawyer who found herself in the hot seat over repeated violations of court orders in immigration cases she was handling in the Twin Cities.

That lawyer, Julie Le, was removed from her post in Minnesota after she told Judge Jerry Blackwell the violations were the result of both a personnel shortage and lackluster procedures intended to ensure orders are followed.

“And, yes, procedure in place right now sucks. I’m trying to fix it,” she said. “The system sucks. This job sucks.”

Compliance issues in immigration cases are not limited to Minnesota.

In Baltimore on Wednesday, a Trump-appointed judge scrutinized claims that federal immigration agencies had violated a 2024 settlement agreement meant to protect some young migrants with pending asylum claims from being deported.

At least a handful of the young migrants covered by the settlement were deported last year before they were given the opportunity to have their asylum claims heard, as guaranteed by the agreement.

US District Judge Stephanie Gallagher did not rule from the bench on a request from lawyers for the migrants for the government to be held in civil contempt. Instead, she said she would be scheduling an evidentiary hearing to hear live testimony from Department of Homeland Security officials after a DOJ lawyer was not able to answer her questions about why those migrants were deported.

DOJ found more than 50 violations of court orders

In New Jersey, a high-ranking Justice Department official told a federal judge there last week the government had identified more than 50 instances of violations of court orders across hundreds of immigration cases brought in the state since early December.

The accounting was undertaken by two dozen lawyers with the US Attorney’s Office in New Jersey after Judge Michael Farbiarz found that the government had violated his order in the case of an Indian national challenging his detention. The judge had directed officials to not transfer the man out of New Jersey while his case played out, but he was nonetheless flown to Texas.

The DOJ official, Jordan Fox, told the judge that many of the violations occurred when a migrant challenging their detention was moved from one facility to another even after a judge had expressly prohibited such a change.

Fox said the violations were accidental and due to “logistical delays in communicating the court order” to the relevant ICE officials or “administrative oversight of the court order.”

The other violations included missing filing deadlines or not giving an immigrant a bond hearing within the timeframe outlined by a judge.

Farbiarz, a Joe Biden appointee, is still weighing what to do in the case of the Indian national, but he made clear Tuesday that he is unhappy with the noncompliance identified by the lawyers.

“This falls below the relevant standards,” he wrote in an order directing the US Attorney’s Office to explain in coming days how it will work to ensure the pattern isn’t repeated. “Judicial orders should never be violated. And they very rarely are, especially not by federal officials.”

The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts has officially fast-tracked the estimated $400 million proposal to build President Donald Trump’s new White House East Wing ballroom Thursday.

While Thursday’s session was originally intended only for design discussion, Chairman Rodney Mims Cook Jr. moved for an immediate final approval.

“Our sitting president has actually designed a very beautiful structure,” Cook said before the vote. “The United States just should not be entertaining the world in tents.”

Trump celebrated the vote in a Truth Social post later in the day.

“The Commission of Fine Arts just approved, unanimously, 6 to 0, with one recusal because he had a conflict in that he worked professionally on the job, the White House Ballroom,” Trump said. “Great accolades were paid to the building’s beauty and scale. Thank you to the members of the Commission!”

The project involves building the ballroom on the site where the East Wing once stood, following its October demolition.

Six of the seven commissioners voted in favor. Commissioner James McCrery abstained, having served as the project’s architect.

“This is an important thing to the president. It’s an important thing to the nation,” Fine Arts chairman Rodney Mims Cook Jr. said in the panel’s first public hearing on Trump’s proposal earlier this month.

Administrations long before Trump’s complained about having to host State Dinners and major events in temporary structures. The old East Wing dining room had just a 200-seat capacity, according to the White House, making this expansion more than triple the seats and nearly double the square footage of the main White House structure.

TRUMP SAYS IT ‘IS TOO LATE’ TO STOP THE WHITE HOUSE BALLROOM CONSTRUCTION AMID LAWSUIT

The estimated $400 million project has faced criticism from Democrats, but Trump has vowed the funding to be private and the benefits to be immense.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation had filed a federal lawsuit to halt construction.

“We’re donating a $400 million ballroom, and we got sued not to build it – for 150 years they’ve wanted a ballroom,” Trump said in December. “And we’re giving them, myself and donors are giving them free of charge for nothing. We’re donating a building that’s approximately $400 million.

“I think I’ll do it for less, but it’s 400. I should do it for less. I will do it for less, but just in case they say 400; otherwise, if I go $3 over, the press will say it costs more.”

Judge scolds Mark Zuckerberg’s team for wearing Meta glasses to social media trial

    February 19, 2026 / 12:15 PM EST / CBS News

A California judge admonished members of Mark Zuckerberg’s team for wearing Ray Ban-Meta AI glasses, which are equipped with a camera, as they entered a Los Angeles courtroom on Wednesday for a landmark trial over the impact of social media on children.

“The judge upbraided the Meta team and said if you guys have recorded anything, you have to dispose of it or I will hold you in contempt,” Jacob Ward, a technology journalist and the host of the Rip Current Podcast, told CBS News, calling the incident “an extraordinary misstep” by Meta.

It’s unclear if Zuckerberg’s team had the glasses on inside the courtroom or how long they were wearing them. Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The use of recording devices and cameras is generally banned in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Judge Carolyn Kuhl, who is presiding over the trial, also ordered anyone in the courtroom wearing AI glasses to immediately remove them, noting that any use of facial recognition technology to identify the jurors was banned.

“This is very serious,” she said. The court did not immediately respond to a request for additional comment.

Meta’s glasses, retail for between $299 and $799, are equipped with a camera that can take photos and record video.

Zuckerberg was in court to testify as part of a trial over whether Meta and Alphabet-owned YouTube deliberately designed their social media platforms to encourage compulsive usage by young people.

The plaintiff behind the suit, identified only by her initials “KGM,” alleges that using social media from a young age caused her to become addicted and harmed her mental health.

Feb 19 (Reuters) – A U.S. vaccine advisory committee meeting scheduled for later this month by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will not be held, with no new dates announced, according to a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services.

U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has stepped up efforts to rewrite national vaccination policy, including dropping broad recommendations for six childhood shots including COVID and hepatitis B, deepening federal support for states’ vaccine exemptions, and cutting funding for mRNA-based vaccine research.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which makes recommendations for who should get which vaccines, had been scheduled to meet from February 25-27, according to the CDC’s website. But no Federal Register notice had been made to announce the meeting, nor had the CDC posted an agenda.

“We will not hold the ACIP meeting later this month. Further information will be shared as available,” HHS spokesman Andrew Nixon said.

The committee’s recommendations typically have affected U.S. health insurance coverage, state policies on vaccines needed for schools and how physicians advise parents and patients. The panel faced multiple revamps last year, after Kennedy fired all its 17 members in June.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

One source familiar with the matter said the CDC is considering rescheduling the meeting for March. The committee generally meets at least three times a year.

The change comes as leadership at the CDC is shifting. National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya will step in as acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a Trump administration official said on Wednesday, replacing current acting director Jim O’Neill.

Major U.S. medical groups have asked a federal judge to prevent the panel from holding the meeting. The groups are suing to challenge policies adopted under Kennedy that they say will lower vaccination rates.

They argue the ACIP is dominated by people aligned with Kennedy’s anti-vaccine views, in violation of the Federal Advisory Committee Act’s mandates that it be fairly balanced and free of inappropriate influence.

    Council on Fine Arts

The Commission of Fine Arts fast-tracked approval for President Donald Trump’s East Wing renovation plans Thursday, bringing the president’s quest for a new ballroom one step closer to reality.

In a unusual move, the committee, an independent federal agency that advises the president and Congress on design plans for monuments, memorials, coins and federal buildings, voted unanimously not only to approve the concept as presented but to approve the final design, an unexpected acceleration of the approval process through this committee.

The approval came despite the committee’s chair noting the panel received over 2,000 public comments about the project, with over 99% negative.

    Ad Feedback

The meeting, held virtually on Zoom, was not open to public, in-person comment, so the chairman summarized that much of the concern was about what commenters felt was “illegal demolition,” “inappropriate scale” and lack of transparency around the project.

The vote came just an hour after the committee swore in two new members: Trump’s executive assistant, Chamberlain Harris — a 26-year-old without any extensive arts experience — and Pamela Hughes Patenaude, former deputy secretary of Housing and Urban Development during the first Trump administration.

The addition of the new members meant the meeting was the first held with a panel made up completely of Trump appointees.

Since last year, the president has been installing loyalists on the committee, after gutting the board completely in October as the East Wing demolition got underway.

Newly installed commissioner Harris spoke in support of the project, saying the White House is the “greatest house in world. We want this to be the greatest ballroom in the world.”

The architect of the project, Shalom Baranes, presented animated and 3-D models of the new East Wing, marking the first time the public has seen and been able to review a more complete mock-up of the project.

The East Wing renovation project also requires approval from the National Capital Planning Commission that is set to meet next on March 5. The commission is also comprised of Trump loyalists.

Khanna and Massie threaten to force a vote on Iran as prospect of US attack looms

    Published February 19, 2026 2:35pm EST | Updated February 19, 2026 2:35pm EST

As the prospect of another U.S. military action against Iran looms, Reps. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., and Thomas Massie, R-Ky., want Congress to pass a measure that would order the president to terminate unauthorized hostilities against the Islamic Republic.

“Trump officials say there’s a 90% chance of strikes on Iran. He can’t without Congress. @RepThomasMassie & I have a War Powers Resolution to debate & vote on war before putting U.S. troops in harm’s way. I will make a motion to discharge to force a vote on it next week,” Khanna declared in a Wednesday post on X.

Massie shared Khanna’s post and commented, “Congress must vote on war according to our Constitution. @RepRoKhanna and I will be forcing that vote to happen in the House as soon as possible. I will vote to put America first which means voting against more war in the Middle East.”

President Donald Trump has been pressuring Iran to make a deal to give up its nuclear weapons ambitions.

After meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week, Trump said in a Truth Social post, “I insisted that negotiations with Iran continue to see whether or not a Deal can be consummated. If it can, I let the Prime Minister know that will be a preference. If it cannot, we will just have to see what the outcome will be.”

“Last time Iran decided that they were better off not making a Deal, and they were hit with Midnight Hammer — That did not work well for them. Hopefully this time they will be more reasonable and responsible,” Trump warned, referring to strikes the U.S. carried out against Iranian nuclear facilities and infrastructure last year.

Axios reported in an article on Wednesday that a Trump adviser said, “The boss is getting fed up. Some people around him warn him against going to war with Iran, but I think there is 90% chance we see kinetic action in the next few weeks.”

The White House pointed Fox News Digital to comments Secretary of State Marco Rubio made during a press conference on Sunday.

Asked whether the Trump administration will notify Congress in advance if it decides to attack Iran, Rubio emphasized that the president has been clear that his preference is diplomacy. Rubio said, “We’ll always comply with the applicable laws… in terms of involving Congress in any decisions.”

“We’ll follow whatever the law is on it,” he said during a press conference in Slovakia, emphasizing that the focus is on negotiations. “If that changes, it’ll be obvious to everyone, and obviously whatever the law requires us to do, we’ll do.”

Massie introduced the Iran-related measure in June 2025. Khanna and other House Democrats are listed as original co-sponsors. Khanna indicated that he’d use a motion to discharge to advance the measure.

“Pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution (50 U.S.C. 1544(c)), Congress hereby directs the President to terminate the use of United States Armed Forces from hostilities against the Islamic Republic of Iran or any part of its government or military, unless explicitly authorized by a declaration of war or specific authorization for use of military force against Iran,” the text of the measure reads, in part.

Khanna said in a Wednesday post on X that, “The War Powers Resolution of 1973 was enacted over Nixon’s veto so that Congress could play an active role to weigh the merits of war and reflect the American people’s will before the president unilaterally launched an attack.”

The Department of Homeland Security is doubling down on the administration’s ongoing investigations into potential voter fraud — reviewing cases involving US citizens and whether they registered to vote, or voted, prior to being naturalized, according to an internal memo reviewed by CNN.

The request, stemming from President Donald Trump’s March executive order on voting, marks one of the latest initiatives by his administration to amplify allegations of voter fraud and pursue the denaturalization of US citizens.

The memo, distributed to leadership last week, states that Homeland Security Investigations’ Identity and Benefit Fraud Unit is overseeing the initiative “designed to identify, investigate, and disrupt activities that undermine the integrity of federal, state, and local elections, and to ensure compliance with applicable election laws.”

It also requested that HSI offices “review all open and closed voter fraud cases… and identify any person(s) who registered to vote, and/or voted in any federal, state, or local election, and subsequently became naturalized United States citizens.”

CNN reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment.

The initiative was first reported by [MSNOW].

In addition to the White House push on voter fraud, the administration has tried to broaden federal power to strip citizenship as part of a larger effort linked to Trump’s hardline immigration policies.

The specter of non-citizen voting has been a focus of Trump and his allies, including in Congress, where Republicans are advancing legislation that would require Americans show documents proving their citizenship when they register to vote.

Instances of non-citizens voting are rare, but election officials and voter advocates acknowledge that non-citizens do sometimes end up on registration rolls, often inadvertently.

Several states are [already using federal immigration data] to vet their rolls and those reviews have frequently flagged false positives, CNN has reported. For instance, in Idaho, after a search of that data tagged 760 potential non-citizens among 1 million-plus resident on the rolls, further review by election officials narrowed the list to about a dozen cases that were referred for possible federal criminal investigation.

The new memo cites a number of federal criminal statutes targeting fraudulent voting and registration for immigration authorities to consider. Those statutes require that the person to have “knowingly” registered to vote or voted when they were ineligible.

The new memo comes as the White House had already been coordinating plans last fall between the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security for sharing data as part of the conservative pursuit of voter fraud.

The aim of that push, according to a source familiar with internal administration discussions that took place late last year, was to identify names on voter rolls who might not be US citizens.

The Justice Department is currently on an unprecedented campaign to obtain [private voter data] from state voter rolls, which could include social security numbers or driver’s license numbers, and has brought 25 lawsuits against state election officials. DOJ has sued officials — mostly Democrats — that have refused to hand over the confidential registration information. Some Republican state election chiefs are balking at the data request as well.

In court filings and in official correspondence with the states, the Justice Department has claimed it [needs the data for enforcement of federal voter registration laws] that govern the removal of deceased voters and voters who have moved, as well as require that states maintain a centralized, digitized voter registration list. Justice Department officials have also verbally told election officials they intend to review the voter rolls against federal voter immigration data, according to West Virginia Secretary of State Kris Warner.

In the handful of the DOJ voter roll cases where judges have issued rulings, the judges have all ruled against the Trump administration — either rejecting the DOJ arguments for obtaining the data on the merits or throwing out the cases for procedural reasons.

Olympians going for gold juggle day jobs to bring in some green

    February 19, 2026 / 12:55 PM EST / CBS News

Most athletes train for years to reach the Olympics, but competing at an elite level doesn’t always come with elite pay. Some U.S. Olympians must also hold down a job to help fund the years of training required to compete on the world’s biggest stage.

Some athletes competing in the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games, including Americans vying for gold in their respective sports, will return home to jobs as attorneys, baristas, realtors, dentists and other types of professionals.

The balancing act reflects the financial challenges faced by some Olympic athletes even after reaching the pinnacle of athletic performance. While some of the best-known athletes earn millions from sponsorships and other lucrative deals, they are the exception, rather than the norm.

American curler Korey Dropkin and his mixed doubles curling partner, Cory Thiesse, both of Duluth, Minnesota, won silver medals in mixed doubles curling at the 2026 Olympics. Before the games began, Dropkin told local news station KARE 11 that he balances curling with a full-time career as a local realtor.

“I have two full-time jobs. One is curling … my other job is a realtor,” he told the outlet.

In addition to holding the title of an Olympic silver medalist, Thiesse also has another title: wastewater tester. “I feel grateful that I have a job that pays the bills while I go compete in curling,” Thiesse told KARE 11.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) told CBS News in a statement last week that “a significant proportion of Winter Olympic athletes” balance elite training with academic and professional pursuits.

USA curler Tara Peterson is also a licensed dentist who practices at Isaacson Gentle Dentistry in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, according to her Team USA profile.

Athletes from other countries also hold second jobs to support their athletic careers. For example, the IOC highlighted Mexico’s Regina Martínez, the country’s first Olympic cross-country skier, who works as a Miami, Florida-based emergency room doctor. Martinez said she also walked dogs to finance her Olympic journey, according to a social media video.

The IOC does not award Olympians prize money, even when they make the podium. Countries’ national Olympic bodies do offer incentives, though, including cash bonuses. The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee awards athletes $37,500 for a gold medal, $22,500 for a silver medal, and $15,000 for a bronze medal.

This year, Ross Stevens, CEO of Stone Ridge Holdings Group, pledged to give every U.S. Olympian $200,000 in financial benefits for each Olympics in which they compete.

“The Olympic and Paralympic Games are the ultimate symbol of human excellence. I do not believe that financial insecurity should stop our nation’s elite athletes from breaking through to new frontiers of excellence,” Stevens said in a statement last year when the gift was announced.

While some Olympic athletes can struggle financially, there’s a wide discrepancy between their circumstances and those of the top-earning U.S. athletes. For example, American snowboarder Chloe Kim earns millions annually, while Eileen Gu, an American freestyle skier, earned $23 million over the past 12 months, according to Forbes.

Summer Olympians, including basketball, golf, and tennis pros, are also among the highest-paid athletes in the world, in part because of the popularity of such sports, in contrast to less visible winter sports, like curling, for example.

Here are some of the other jobs Olympians hold while also going for gold in Italy.

    Hard on the body

American snowboarder Nick Baumgartner, 44, who placed seventh in the snowboard cross in Milan, calls himself the #BlueCollarOlympian on social media — a nod to his work pouring concrete in the off-season. His day job helped finance his professional snowboard career, according to his U.S. Ski and Snowboard team profile.

“It’s always been tough. But you either believe the excuses, or your find a way to make it happen,” he told CBS News’ Kelly O’Grady Wednesday. “And for me, concrete, which is a terribly hard job, it’s hard on the back, it’s hard on the body, but for me, it was my way to do this.”

Baumgartner, who won gold at the 2022 Winter Olympics with teammate Lindsey Jacobellis in mixed snowboard cross, said that winning the top prize in the event allowed him to give his body a bit of a break.

Before that, he said he would “work really hard and make a lot of money in the summer, and when it started to snow, they would shut it down. I would get laid off, and I’d get unemployment. Then I’d get paid, and I would go snowboard.”

Holding an Olympic gold medal catapulted him to the ranks of keynote speaker at corporate events, so he could make money “without destroying my body.”

“Because pouring concrete and staying young … they don’t mix,” he said.

He acknowledged the physical — and financial — challenges of being an Olympian.

“It’s tough. It’s definitely not easy …. you either find a way to fight for it, or it doesn’t happen,” he said.

A silver medal with a side of maple syrup

Alpine skier Ryan Cochran-Siegle, 34, who won a silver medal in the Super-G event in Milan, holds two other titles, in addition to Olympic medal winner.

He is currently studying engineering at the University of Vermont, and also works at his family’s maple syrup farm and shop, Cochran’s Slopeside Syrup, in Vermont, according to his U.S. Ski and Snowboard team bio.

Studies give “balance” to life on the slopes

U.S. Olympic ski jumper Paige Jones also studies biomedical engineering at the University of North Dakota. She told UND Today, the university’s online news source, that working toward a degree while training and competing in the Olympics actually complements her athletic pursuits, as she looks down the road to life beyond the slopes.

“I always think of school as a balance to my life as an athlete. It gives me something to think about when I’m not on the hill. I don’t want to be ruminating about ski jumping all the time — it’s so easy to get in your head, especially when the jump only lasts about five seconds,” Jones told UND Today.

    Costs aren’t covered

American alpine ski racer Keely Cashman, who placed 15th in Super Giant Slalom, also works as barista at The Serene Bean, her family’s coffee shop in Pinecrest, California, during the off-season, according to her U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team bio.

On her website, she advertises merchandise, including stickers and t-shirts, for sale. Proceeds subsidize her training and travel costs. She described the financial challenges that come with training at the elite level.

“Unfortunately, some of the costs that come with training and competing at the highest level are not covered by the national governing body,” she said. “By supporting me, you’re helping me chase this dream and allowing me to continue competing at the highest level. Thank you for being part of the journey.”

Cashman told CBS News this week after she had returned home from Milan that her Serene Bean earnings are modest, but that her star power helps boost sales.

“I worked there a lot growing up, and it definitely helped fund my skiing career,” she said.

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard team now covers her training and travel expenses, but she pays for her dad, her personal coach, to travel with her when she practices and competes, with income she earns based on her results at races throughout the competitive season.

“I cover his costs as well, so it’s not cheap,” Cashman told CBS News. “If you’re skiing fast and having great results, it’s good, but if you’re not skiing fast, you can be making absolutely no money.”
