A Democratic House candidate vying to flip a key Republican-held seat is on the defensive after reversing her position on conversion therapy following backlash from the party’s left flank.

Rebecca Cooke, a Democratic challenger vying to unseat Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Wis., repeatedly declined to endorse a federal ban on conversion therapy during several forums held ahead of the Aug. 11 primary.

But after drawing criticism from some progressive voters, Cooke reversed course, saying the federal government should prohibit the controversial practice, which often involves mental health professionals offering talk therapy for individuals struggling with their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The issue gained renewed attention when the Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that Colorado could not enforce a state-level ban on conversion therapy over free speech concerns, sparking backlash from some Democrats.

The reversal comes as Cooke appears to be walking a political tightrope on LGBTQ issues in the Trump-friendly swing district, where she must appeal to both Democratic primary voters and the broader electorate.

Before Cooke can seek a rematch against Van Orden, she must first overcome a primary challenge from former Eau Claire City Council President Emily Berge, who is running to her left.

Asked what lawmakers could do to push back against the Supreme Court ruling at a May forum in La Crosse, Cooke sidestepped the question and said she preferred “local communities having control.”

“I’m in favor of that sort of local control when making policies like this,” the Wisconsin Democrat said.

Wisconsin’s conversion therapy ban took effect in 2022, while the city of Eau Claire, in Van Orden’s district, prohibited the practice in 2018.

Meanwhile, at a June candidate forum in Platteville, Cooke said “no” when asked if the federal government should pass legislation to ban conversion therapy.

Her answers prompted outrage from some progressive voters.

“I find it interesting that not in one, but TWO forums you said you would leave conversion therapy up to the states to decide,” one user wrote on Facebook. “That is not protecting the LGBTQ community.”

“I don’t know how you can say ‘Happy Pride’ if you aren’t willing to stand up for people you want to represent in Congress,” another account replied. “If you are willing to sell out the LGBTQIA+ community for votes, who is next?”

Amid the backlash, Cooke said she “misunderstood” the moderator’s question and said she supported a federal ban on conversion therapy in a statement posted on a third-party account after the debate.

During a July forum in Eau Claire, Cooke clarified, “I do not support conversion therapy whatsoever.”

Berge, who helped enact Eau Claire’s local conversion therapy ban, was clear throughout the candidate forums in denouncing the practice.

“As a therapist, conversion therapy has no place in our society, in our culture,” she said during the June event.

Republicans sharply criticized Cooke’s reversal on conversion therapy bans.

Van Orden’s campaign argued Cooke, who counts Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., among her endorsers, flip-flopped on her stance while still trying to “portray herself as a moderate.”

“Rebecca Cooke is so desperate to appease the far-left woke mob that Wisconsin voters can’t be sure where she actually stands,” Republican National Committee (RNC) spokesman Hunter Lovell told Fox News Digital.

“She’s trying to be one candidate for liberal activists and another for everyone else,” he continued. “Whether it’s caving to the far left or scrambling to rebrand herself for the general election, Cooke owes Wisconsinites an answer: Which Rebecca Cooke would show up in Congress?”

Fox News Digital reached out to Cooke for comment.

Cooke, a former Democratic consultant, fundraiser and small business owner, has consistently supported expanding LGBTQ rights during her previous two failed bids for Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District.

In her third run for the seat, the repeat candidate is making clear that the Democrat-backed Equality Act — legislation that would make sexual orientation and gender identity protected classes under federal civil rights law potentially affecting women-only spaces and female sports teams — is a “centerpiece” of her campaign.

She is also endorsed by the progressive Human Rights Campaign, which has advocated for sex change procedures for minors, including hormone therapy and puberty blockers.

President Donald Trump comfortably carried the sprawling swing district by more than seven points in 2024, meaning Cooke would likely have to win over a segment of the president’s voters to prevail in November.

Cooke, who significantly outperformed former Vice President Kamala Harris, lost to Van Orden in the general election by just under three points in 2024, according to analysis from The Downballot.

July 28 (Reuters) – As U.S. President Donald Trump intensifies his campaign against diversity programs, appointments of women and racial minorities to S&P 500 boards have dropped to their lowest level in more than a decade, threatening to unwind years of gains in corporate boardroom diversity.

The shift is evident in new research by recruiting firms that study leadership diversity and Reuters interviews with more than a dozen boardroom recruiters, investors and ​human resource analysts.

It follows a series of Trump administration actions targeting diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives known as DEI. Across corporate America, major investors who once pressed companies to diversify their boards have retreated, while legal challenges have upended DEI policies in ‌recent years.

RECORD DIVERSITY MASKS SHIFT IN NEW APPOINTMENTS

New data released on Tuesday by global executive search firm Spencer Stuart shows diversity in board appointments has steadily declined since peaking at 72% in 2021 and 2022. Of the 364 new independent directors named to S&P 500 boards during the year ended April 30, 40% were women or racial minorities, the lowest level since 2014, when 39% of incoming directors were diverse, according to the leadership advisory firm.

On S&P 500 boards today, diverse directors hold 49.3% of the seats, slightly down from a record of 49.6% in 2024 and 2025, according to Spencer Stuart.

Recruiters and analysts interviewed by Reuters say those recent highs reflect years of appointments following the #MeToo and Black Lives ​Matter movements. But while board diversity remains near a historic high, the lineup of new directors is becoming markedly less diverse, suggesting those gains may prove difficult to sustain if current hiring patterns persist and a larger share of new board seats goes to white men, ​the recruiters and industry analysts say.

George Anderson, co-leader of Spencer Stuart’s North American Board Advisory Practice, said boards are responding to changing legal, regulatory and political pressures. He said one driver of the decline in diverse appointments ⁠is a shift toward recruiting current and former CEOs, who accounted for 37% of new directors this year, the highest level in 15 years. Companies see those executives as well suited to navigate complexity, but the CEO talent pool is less diverse, he said.

The shift in boardroom appointments coincides with a ​sharp decline in the number of companies publicly citing diversity as a factor in board recruitment. Some 12% of S&P 500 companies now disclose using some form of diversity criteria in board decisions, down from 23% in 2025, when President Donald Trump began his second term, and 48% in 2024 under President ​Joe Biden, according to data for this year provided to Reuters by PeopleReturn, a human resources analytics firm. PeopleReturn shows board diversity peaked at nearly 50% this year.

Supporters say the initiatives help expand opportunities for historically disadvantaged groups and improve governance and decision-making, while Trump and other critics say they discriminate against white people and men and undermine merit-based advancement.

Kristin Hull, chief investment officer of Nia Impact Capital, which often lobbies tech companies on social issues, says the decline in appointments reflects a return to male-dominated corporate leadership.

“We were making such progress,” she said. “Now the bro culture is alive and well.”

However, conservative activist Robby Starbuck, who has pushed companies, including Tractor Supply

, to roll ​back DEI in several high-profile social media campaigns, has welcomed the change.

“They were focused on all the wrong things, and it shows in their earnings,” he said. Neither company returned requests for comment.

Asked about the rollback of corporate diversity programs, White House spokeswoman Allison Schuster said Trump “was resoundingly elected with a mandate ​to end divisive, racist policies and restore merit and efficiency.”

‘OUR COUNTRY WILL BE WOKE NO LONGER’

Under Trump, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, created under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, has been tasked with rooting out what the administration calls illegal DEI practices that it says gave preferential treatment to women and racial minorities in ‌hiring and promotions.

Many companies scrapped ⁠or reassessed their diversity initiatives before Trump’s second term after the Supreme Court ruled in 2023 that it was illegal to consider race in college admissions. Though the decision didn’t cover corporate practices, it set off a cascade of legal threats against companies over a range of diversity initiatives.

Trump last year issued executive orders restricting certain DEI programs among federal contractors and within the federal government, then declared “our country will be woke no longer.”

The Trump administration is threatening hefty fines for companies that do not comply.

The U.S. Justice Department alleged IBM prioritized diverse candidates in hiring, tying bonuses to hitting certain demographic targets in employment decisions. IBM, which was the first U.S. company to face action under Trump’s anti-DEI directive over its employment practices, did not return requests for comment.

Shareholders, however, have shown little appetite for proposals seeking to ​weaken DEI. Three shareholder proposals put forward by conservatives targeting corporate DEI ⁠efforts won just 1.5%

support on average
at annual meetings in recent months, a typical rate.

BOARD RECRUITMENT SHIFTS AWAY FROM DIVERSITY

Even as overall board diversity remains near record levels, Reuters interviews with more than a dozen recruiters, investors and employees signaled companies are placing less emphasis on diversity in board recruitment.

That shift is evident at many companies that championed diversity initiatives after the #MeToo movement and the 2020 protests over the police killing of George Floyd, including

Goldman early last year dropped its requirement that companies it took public have at least two diverse board members, citing “legal developments” weeks after Trump signed his first executive order targeting diversity initiatives. A Goldman spokesperson said the ​firm still believes diversity enhances its performance ⁠and is critical to its financial success. J&J and Amex didn’t return requests for comment.

INVESTOR RETREAT EASES PRESSURE FOR BOARD DIVERSITY

eased pressure on companies to diversify their boards.

“All the big investors that were pushing for this have completely stopped mentioning it. Large-cap executives feel a lot less pressure to be talking about this,” he said.

The fund managers’ previous policies required some measure of diversity on company boards where they held stock. BlackRock, for instance, in late 2021 called for boards to be

30% diverse
, while in 2022 Vanguard called for diversity ⁠of gender, race and ​ethnicity “at a minimum.”

Both companies, however, stripped out that language last year. State Street dropped its expectation in February 2025 that women comprise at least 30% of major company boards.

All three asset managers ​declined to comment for this story.

In the C-suite, recruiters say diversity now carries less weight in executive searches. Women and racial minorities made up

roughly 22%
of all S&P 500 CEOs last year, down from 23% the year before, according to Spencer Stuart.

Spencer Stuart and PeopleReturn tracked race, ethnicity and gender of the board members based on self-identified information, supplemented by outside sources and ​other research.

“Today we hear more about ‘the best person.’ There’s less currency for being a person of color than there once was,” said Jeff Christian, CEO of executive headhunting firm Christian & Timbers.

WASHINGTON, July 28 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr ​Zelenskiy to the White House on Tuesday ahead of the funeral of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, who forcefully lobbied Washington ‌to back Kyiv in its conflict with Russia.

Zelenskiy is expected to have a short private meeting with Trump, likely in the absence of reporters, ahead of Graham’s funeral in the afternoon, a source familiar with the plans told Reuters.

The visit offers Zelenskiy a chance to shore up military support at a moment when U.S.-Ukraine relations ​are warmer than they have been in months, but the U.S. has been sitting on aid for Kyiv and the loss ​of Graham has removed one of its most influential advocates in Washington.

The Ukrainian leader will press Trump for ⁠urgently needed air defense capabilities and the completion of a drone deal. The two leaders will also likely discuss Trump’s promise at the NATO summit to ​grant Ukraine a license to produce Patriot missile interceptors.

After the White House meeting, Zelenskiy is expected to go to the U.S. Capitol for a meeting with senators.

His ​visit comes as a letter sent to lawmakers from the Pentagon showed the Trump administration has told Congress it will not finish spending $400 million authorized for aid to Ukraine until fiscal year 2029, even as Kyiv runs critically low on weapons it needs to fend off Russian missile attacks.

Democrats and some of Trump’s fellow Republicans ​have criticized the Pentagon for sitting on aid for Kyiv that members of both parties backed last year.

RELATIONS HAVE IMPROVED

Zelenskiy and Trump clashed repeatedly ​in the early months of Trump’s second term, but relations between the two have improved in recent months as Ukraine has had greater success in the ‌war, including ⁠with increased attacks on Russia’s oil industry.

Graham, a South Carolina Republican who died suddenly from a heart ailment on July 11 at age 71, was one of Trump’s most visible allies. He was a defense hawk who regularly called for an interventionist U.S. role on the world stage and strongly backed Ukraine.

He met with Zelenskiy in Kyiv only a day before his death, the 10th time he had visited Ukraine since Russia’s 2022 ​invasion. The Senate is preparing to ​vote on a bipartisan package ⁠of new sanctions on Russia that Graham spent his final days trying to push across the finish line.

Graham had been running for a fifth term in the Senate after winning the South Carolina Republican primary in ​June. His sister, Darline Graham, has been appointed to fill the remainder of his term and she ​has announced her intention ⁠to seek a full six-year term in November, with Trump’s endorsement.

Zelenskiy said as he arrived in Washington that anti-ballistic defense and strategic cooperation with the U.S. were the “number-one priority” for meetings with Trump and his team.

“Peace needs to be brought closer,” he said in a post on X.

A White House ⁠official said Trump ​would discuss the peace process between Russia and Ukraine with the Ukrainian president. “Now is the time ​to end the war,” the official said.

Zelenskiy spoke last week with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner about the prospects for renewed peace talks with Russia and said that ​Ukrainian and U.S. officials could meet in the United States in the coming days.

中国商务部官网星期二（7月28日）发布题为《关于所谓“产能过剩”问题的中方立场》的文件。

文件称，近年来，有关国家和经济体对自身产业竞争力、市场地位的担忧增多，将经贸问题政治化，指责中国产能冲击世界市场，并以此为借口不断加码对华限制措施，“保护主义加剧升温”。

文件梳理第一次工业革命以来全球产能格局的历史演变，指全球对“产能过剩”概念目前尚未形成广泛共识，提出应根据不同发展阶段、发展水平来衡量不同经济体和不同行业的“产能过剩”情况。

“中方始终认为，看待产能问题要坚持全面、客观、公正的态度”，文件指出，搞保护主义只会扰乱全球经贸秩序，不利于全球产供链安全稳定和产业合作健康有序发展。

文件逐一反驳外界对中国的相关指控，包括产业补贴政策、贸易顺差现象，以及“中国内需不足导致产能过剩”“不公平竞争”等批评。

文件称，产业补贴与产能过剩不存在必然联系，合理的产业补贴政策有助于纠正市场失灵，推进技术创新、环境保护等，同时表明中国始终严格遵守世贸组织规则，致力于建立完善符合国际惯例的补贴体系。

文件强调，中国的现代化产业发展，对世界来说不是“中国冲击2.0”，而是“中国机遇2.0”，将帮助推动全球创新合作和科技进步、加快全球绿色低碳转型、助力发展中国家工业化等。

随着中国光伏、新能源汽车等产品近年涌向国际市场，外界对中国向全球输出过剩产能的担忧不断加剧，认为中国政府对特定产业的扶持政策形成大量产能，压低出口价格，对本土产业形成冲击。

美国贸易代表格里尔星期一（27日）接受福克斯新闻频道访谈时说，正针对中国、越南等16个主要贸易伙伴的工业产能过剩问题展开调查，可能会对这些经济体征收额外关税。

William Shatner and his daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, are opening up about a terrifying journey they shared together — battling stage 4 cancer at the same time.

The Star Trek icon explained three years ago he had a lump that a doctor told him was a salivary gland — but after a month the lump started to grow so he asked a friend who was a doctor to examine it.

He was told it needed to be removed, which was also confirmed by an oncologist.

“It had spread to my brain,” Shatner said. “There were little points of light in my brain and little points of light … I think in my lung.”

The diagnosis was stage 4 malignant melanoma.

“You need to check again”

Nearly a year before Shatner, now 95 years old, was diagnosed, his daughter found a lump on her breast. Shatner Gretsch said her doctor initially did not find anything concerning on her ultrasound, but she said she knew something was wrong.

“Something just said, ‘You need to check again,’” she recalled.

The father and daughter both said Shatner Gretsch would have died if she didn’t question the initial results.

“It was a super aggressive kind of breast cancer, and it had already escaped the breast wall and had gone into my chest,” Shatner Gretsch explained.

She underwent months of chemotherapy, 30 rounds of radiation, a double mastectomy and a year of immunotherapy while leaning on her father for support.

The 61-year-old recalled one night in particular when she reached out to her dad, saying, “I was just in one of those moments where you want your daddy, you know, like you’re little, you’re feeling very little and you’re feeling this is really scary.”

Shatner Gretsch called her dad “a source of calm” for her.

“He got out of bed and drove over here, gave me the bear hug,” she said. “He said to me, ‘This is just a blip in your life. You’re going to get past this.’”

“Somehow we would survive”

Through their emotional journey, Shatner Gretsch remembers getting her first clear PET scan early on and calling her dad.

“It was the third time I heard you cry in my whole life,” she told him.

For Shatner, he said it’s his instinct and intuition as a father to protect.

“Here was something I couldn’t protect and then I didn’t need to protect, she was going to be all right,” he said.

Both are now cancer-free and sharing their journey on a new podcast, “No Time But Now,” that premieres Wednesday and focuses on medicine, science and spirituality.

“I always felt that somehow we would survive,” Shatner said.

He told CBS News he chose not to disclose his diagnosis originally because he was afraid it would impact his ability to find work and he loves what he does.
