美国将中国具领导地位的机器人和电力逆变器纳入进口管制清单，中国商务部敦促美国立即撤销有关措施，并警告如果美国一意孤行，中方将坚决予以反制。

美国联邦通信委员会（FCC）星期二（7月28日）更新管制清单，添加外国生产的“先进机器人设备”，包括人形机器人和四足机器人，以及能将太阳能转换成可用电力的联网逆变器。

FCC称，由白宫召集的跨部门机构认定，这些产品会给美国国家和公民安全带来不可接受的风险，包括可能造成供应链脆弱、扰乱美国经济和国家安全，并可能带来威胁美国关键基础设施的网络安全风险等。

外国电子设备须获FCC授权才能进入美国市场，管制清单上的产品无法直接获批。此前已授权的产品不受影响，已购买设备也可继续使用，但新型号则需要向美国国防部和国土安全部申请，在认定不存在不可接受风险后，才能获得有条件批准。

中国外交部已对此做出回应，发言人毛宁星期三（29日）说：“中方一贯坚决反对美方泛化国家安全概念，打压中国企业。保护主义提升不了美国的竞争力，只会损害美国企业和消费者的利益。中方将继续采取必要措施，坚定维护中国企业的正当合法权益。”

Washington — Todd Blanche’s confirmation as attorney general is on hold as Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas leverages his vote in exchange for an agreement in writing to formally kill the Justice Department’s “anti-weaponization fund.”

The Senate Judiciary Committee was set to vote on advancing Blanche’s nomination, but Cornyn, a pivotal vote on the panel, told reporters, “I’m not prepared to vote yes” without an agreement.

Late Wednesday, the committee announced it had delayed a Thursday morning hearing to consider Blanche’s nomination. A committee spokesperson said the hearing was “postponed as work continues to secure sufficient support in committee to favorably report Attorney General-nominee Todd Blanche, who is highly qualified for the job.”

In a statement Wednesday night, a Justice Department spokesperson told CBS News that it “has been in regular communication with Committee members for weeks, and we look forward to continuing to work productively with Senators to address any concerns.”

Opposition from Cornyn could sink the nomination of Blanche, who currently serves as acting attorney general.

GOP Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, another member of the committee, said he shared Cornyn’s concerns, but appeared more hopeful about a resolution. The two met with Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, hours before Thursday’s vote was canceled.

Cornyn has also demanded modifications to restrict the scope of the Justice Department agreement with President Trump that granted tax audit immunity to the president and his family for prior tax returns.

The audit protection and the nearly $1.8 billion fund to pay people who claim they were politically persecuted were part of a settlement to resolve Mr. Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS and Treasury Department.

“All I want them to do is to confirm what he said in his sworn testimony before the Judiciary Committee, with regard not only to the weaponization fund, but also who is protected from future audits and what agencies of the federal government are bound by the release,” Cornyn said Wednesday afternoon. “It’s pretty simple, and we’ve actually sent them a redline strikeout.”

Earlier in the day, Cornyn said he hadn’t seen “a single piece of writing that is responsive to what I’ve requested.”

A Justice Department official said the department provided a “written proposal” to Cornyn’s staff Tuesday.

“We look forward to further discussion around any outstanding concerns,” the official said.

But Cornyn said the Justice Department’s proposal was “not responsive” to some of his concerns.

The Justice Department transmitted a new response to Cornyn and Tillis that “addresses their concerns,” a source familiar with the matter said later Wednesday.

The “anti-weaponization” fund was met with fierce resistance from members on both sides of the aisle after its unveiling in May, leading the Justice Department to back away from it.

At his confirmation hearing earlier this month, Blanche reiterated that the fund was “dead.” Cornyn noted that the settlement states that any changes to it must be agreed upon in writing by all parties involved.

“Has there been a written agreement of the parties to modify the settlement fund?” he asked.

“No, the settlement fund is just not moving forward,” Blanche responded. “There’s no modification. It never started. No money went from the Treasury to any other account.”

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump suggested Cornyn’s opposition stemmed from his endorsement of his primary opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Paxton defeated Cornyn in the May primary.

“Maybe John Cornyn is upset with me because I didn’t endorse him,” Mr. Trump said.

In response to Mr. Trump, Cornyn said: “That’s a convenient excuse, and it happens to be untrue.”

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s chances of confirmation were derailed Wednesday, less than 24 hours before a pivotal vote in the Senate.

It’s another chapter in the troubled saga that has followed Blanche since he was tapped to replace former Attorney General Pam Bondi and one that boils down to issues among Blanche, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and two key Republicans who control his fate in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Senators John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Thom Tillis, R-N.C., are demanding that the DOJ provide explicit, written proposals to modify the settlement deal reached between the IRS and President Donald Trump and his family earlier this year.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., had hoped a deal could be struck and allow for the confirmation to move forward, eying next week as the major floor vote to formally confirm Blanche as Bondi’s replacement.

“I think that that’s an issue between, right now, the White House and Senators Cornyn and Tillis,” Thune said. “But, yeah, I would encourage them to sit down, which I think they are, and try to come to a resolution there so that the markup can continue tomorrow, and we can get Todd Blanche ready for the floor.”

The DOJ had until 4 p.m. Wednesday to get the lawmakers what they wanted, but the agency fell short, and Blanche’s bumpy carriage ride to confirmation turned into a pumpkin.

Without a guarantee that Cornyn or Tillis would vote to confirm Blanche, Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, opted to postpone the hearing until a later date.

Their targets are the now-defunct, nearly $2 billion anti-weaponization fund and the president’s audit immunity. Republicans and Democrats alike railed against the fund, particularly over concerns that the funding would go to people involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, riots on Capitol Hill.

Trump’s audit immunity has similarly ruffled feathers. Blanche, in his announcement of the settlement deal earlier this year, outlined that, as part of the agreement, the IRS would not be allowed to audit Trump, his family or affiliated companies.

Cornyn has proven the most resistant until his demands are met. He’s used his newfound freedom to extract concessions from the Trump administration in recent weeks.

His push for an explicit end to the audit language in the settlement agreement is another such example. The longtime lawmaker, who will exit the Senate at the end of this year after being ousted by the Trump-backed Ken Paxton, was set to meet Blanche Wednesday morning.

But the confab was called off, and Blanche continued making the rounds in the Senate throughout the day, capping off his visit to the Capitol with Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, R-Wyo. He declined to comment to reporters on his way out.

Cornyn said it was “made clear from the outset that we expected some written proposals to modify the release that was signed in the tax dispute with President Trump and his organization.”

“We need to conform the actual document to what Todd Blanche testified under oath as the president’s acting attorney general,” Cornyn said. “We’ve had two meetings scheduled that have now been canceled because they have not been responsive in providing those written documents.”

Trump, when asked about the holdup in the Senate for Blanche, portrayed himself as a president at an arm’s length from the situation and said he heard his attorney general pick was “going through quite nicely.”

“Well, all I can say is Todd Blanche is outstanding. And I thought he’s — I thought it was pretty routine because he’s so good,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “You just wouldn’t find a better person. So, I don’t know, maybe John Cornyn is upset with me because I didn’t endorse him. I don’t know what it is, but I haven’t heard that there’s a problem.”

Tillis made clear he doesn’t “have a beef with DOJ or with Blanche.”

“They’re trying to get it done, but still gotta get it done,” Tillis said.

He also noted that the number of hurdles that getting those kinds of written proposals through was more extensive than meets the eye. For example, Tillis said the actual settlement likely was signed by the president’s lawyer and not Trump himself.

“So there’s, you know, there’s a circle of people that have to go through the loop,” he said. “And I get that, but, you know, if we can get it done or possibly get him reported out on Tuesday, if they schedule a markup, I would support that if we get the language.”

DOJ asking secretive court to deport Afghan woman allegedly tied to ISIS-linked plot, in first-ever test case

The Justice Department is seeking to convince a federal judge to deport a Texas-based Afghan woman who prosecutors allege is an “alien terrorist,” it revealed Wednesday, in the first-ever test case before a secretive court that has never convened since it was created three decades ago.

Nazira Haji Zada, 47, of Fort Worth, Texas, will appear Thursday morning in the Alien Terrorist Removal Court in Washington, D.C., where a judge will hear evidence from the Justice Department over whether she should be removed from the United States, according to the Justice Department and court filings. The government is accusing her of links to a foiled Islamic State-inspired terrorist plot to carry out a mass shooting on Election Day in 2024.

“The allegations in this case show the matriarch of an ISIS-sympathizing family aiding in a plot to launch a mass casualty attack on American voters on Election Day,” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement.

Zada has never been publicly charged by the government with any crimes of terrorism, and has no known criminal history, according to the government.

Last year, her son Abdullah Haji Zada and son-in-law Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi each pleaded guilty in a federal court in Oklahoma to purchasing two AK-47 style rifles and 500 rounds of ammunition from an undercover FBI agent as part of an alleged plot targeting the 2024 election in support of the Islamic State.

At the time of his arrest in 2024, Zada’s son was only 17. He was charged as an adult and pleaded guilty to gun crimes when he was 18. Tawhedi pleaded guilty to terrorism and gun offenses.

In an unclassified FBI summary filed in the Alien Terrorist Removal Court, the government alleged that Zada “supported” her son and son-in-law’s conspiracy. The FBI also alleged she “pledged loyalty to ISIS” and “worked to indoctrinate her children with ISIS ideology,” citing information from a “reliable source.”

“Nazira worked with Tawhedi to radicalize the family and to conceal their pro-ISIS teaching and planned family relocation to ISIS-controlled territory from her unsuspecting husband,” the FBI wrote.

The Alien Terrorist Removal Court was created by Congress in 1996 and signed into law by President Bill Clinton. It was set up to deport noncitizens who could not be removed by the traditional legal process because the information about their cases was classified and could not be made public for national security reasons.

The targets of noncitizen terrorist removal proceedings — including legal permanent residents — are not permitted to review the classified evidence against them, and unlike in criminal proceedings, they are barred from legally challenging how the evidence was collected by the government.

Applications for removal must be certified by the attorney general and are reviewed by the court ex parte and in camera — meaning the target of the deportation proceeding is not a party to the hearing.

If the application is accepted, it moves to the removal stage and a public hearing is conducted. As part of that, the Justice Department also releases an unclassified summary of the case, as it did in a newly created website for the court that was only launched on July 17.

Until July 15, when the Justice Department first filed its removal application against Zada, the Alien Terrorist Removal Court had been a “zombie” court that existed only on paper. It had never been used before, and prior efforts by the Justice Department earlier on after its creation to find a test case failed.

The court is structured similarly to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, another secret court that reviews sensitive requests for surveillance warrants. All five of its judges also sit on the FISC and are appointed by the chief justice of the Supreme Court.

U.S. District Judge Joan Ericksen, who sits on the federal bench in Minnesota, is the chief judge of the Alien Terrorist Removal Court, and will preside over Zada’s public removal hearing at the federal courthouse in Washington, D.C., at 11 a.m. ET Thursday.

Zada has a green card, according to publicly unsealed court records. Under the rules of the court, lawful permanent residents are afforded the right to government-appointed counsel — though that attorney may not share classified evidence with the defendant.

According to court filings, her spouse was employed at the Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan from 2009 to 2016, and was granted a green card under a program for Afghans who assisted U.S. forces during the war in Afghanistan.

CBS News could not immediately determine who may represent Zada at her removal hearing on Thursday.

CBS News has reached out to the defense attorney who represented her son in his criminal case in the Western District of Oklahoma, where the original case was brought.

Tawhedi and Abdullah Haji Zada were arrested on Oct. 7, 2024, after purchasing the firearms and ammunition from the undercover agent.

Abdullah Haji Zada, who was also a green card-holder like his mother, was sentenced to 15 years in prison. In his plea deal, he consented to being deported to Afghanistan after serving his sentence and acknowledged his lawful permanent resident status would be revoked.

Tawhedi, 28, pleaded guilty on June 13, 2025, to conspiring and attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State.

Both were accused of conspiring to relocate their female and juvenile male family members, including Nazira Zada, to Islamic State-controlled territory in Afghanistan while their alleged Election Day plot was carried out.

Moments ahead of a primary debate on Monday night, Michigan Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed released a new financial disclosure, revealing new details about he and his wife’s assets worth up to $2.1 million.

The disclosures, which come a week ahead of a heated primary election between El-Sayed and Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., shed new light on El-Sayed’s financials but questions still remain about the specifics of his wealth. While, broadly, much of their information was already known through reporting he did last year, the 2026 filing adds three key additions.

El Sayed and his wife listed a rental property in Dubai worth up to $250,000, a liability to a company in Dubai worth up to $100,000 and a tweak to El-Sayed’s employment status in Michigan.

Past reporting had already show that El-Sayed’s wife owned a rental property in Ann Harbor, Michigan and another one in Bangalore, India.

The Dubai property makes a third real estate holding. The debt, worth between $50,000 and $100,000, is a liability owed to Majid Al Futtaim Tilal, a real estate development company that specializes in luxury residential projects. And finally, the filing adds that El-Sayed worked as a consultant for Wayne County, Michigan, with an income of $72,000. At the same time, the filing lists a salary of $82,750 — also for Wayne County. The consulting is a change from a salaried position listed at $278,900 the year before.

“Know many people who own rental properties in three countries?” Prominent gun-control activist Shannon Watts posted on X.

“Why are all the socialists rich????” Democratic analyst Rachel Bitecofer posted on X.

In total, both the 2025 and 2026 filings put El-Sayed’s net worth between $870,000 and $2.1 million.

The Michigan race has drawn national attention as Stevens, a more establishment candidate with the backing of Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., squares off against El-Sayed’s progressive promises to challenge the U.S.-Israel relationship, abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and provide universal healthcare. His platform has drawn support from fellow progressives such as Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.

With a groundswell of support among progressives, Stevens has sought to paint El-Sayed as a far cry from the middle-class working-family base he claims to champion, needling El-Sayed over his net worth in a debate last month.

“Look, I am the only one running for United States Senate in Michigan who is not a millionaire,” Stevens had said at the time.

At the debate on Monday, Stevens resurfaced the filings and what she characterized as a lack of transparency.

“You have not released your tax returns,” Stevens reminded him. “You talk about getting money out of politics and putting money in people’s pockets, but still no one knows who’s putting the money in your pocket,” Stevens said.

El-Sayed, who filed the Senate report right before the debate, said he had made the necessary disclosures, sidestepping the comment about his tax returns.

“This is a distraction from the issues in your life,” he said at Monday’s debate.

El-Sayed’s most recent disclosures follow an application for an extension which allowed him an extra 90 days to finalize his 2026 paperwork. That extension would have allowed him to submit his disclosures on Aug. 13 — a week after the primary. When confronted about the timeline, El-Sayed pledged on a podcast earlier this month to submit his disclosures before the election.

El-Sayed’s campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the disclosures or the timing of its submission.
