Husband of North Carolina woman missing in Grenada doesn’t suspect foul play

The husband of a North Carolina woman who went missing last week while visiting the Caribbean island of Grenada said Wednesday he believes “there was no foul play” in her disappearance.

Cailen Waddell, the husband of Elizabeth Waddell, said in a statement that the ongoing investigation will focus on tracing his wife’s movements in the hours before she disappeared, adding that “no detail is too small.”

Waddell was last seen on security video at around noon on July 22 swimming off Grand Anse Beach, the Royal Grenada Police Force previously reported. According to Cailen Waddell, eyewitnesses later reported interacting with her at about 5:30 p.m. further from shore that same evening.

“After careful and thoughtful consultation with family, local authorities, the U.S. Embassy, and others here in Grenada, I join authorities in believing there was no foul play,” Cailen Waddell said in Wednesday’s statement. “Liz was last seen swimming in the ocean near Grand Anse, around 5:30 PM, far from shore. She communicated her confidence in her swimming and location, as well as the beauty of the island.”

The 44-year-old North Carolina mother was on a three-week vacation with her close friend, Heather, at the time of her disappearance. According to her family, Waddell left the Airbnb she was sharing with Heather, and when she didn’t return for hours, Heather went looking for her and found just her towel, but no other sign of her.

A friend of Waddell said this week that surveillance video of her last known movements on the day of her disappearance showed her “floating” and “swimming around.”

“But then she, you know, she floats out of the camera view and so that’s the last footage of Liz,” her friend Amanda Romano-Harmon said.

Surveillance video showed Elizabeth Waddell walking toward a beachside pier around 11:30 a.m. before entering the water and swimming beneath the pier shortly after noon, Royal Grenada Police Acting Police Commissioner Randy Connaught said Tuesday. About 45 minutes later, her friend was seen heading toward the pier before returning alone.

Cailen Waddell described his wife as “a loving free-spirit person,” telling Grenadian media last week that his wife “could make friends with anyone and she often did.”

Police have asked anyone with information on Waddell’s whereabouts to contact authorities immediately. The U.S. State Department has said it is aware of the disappearance.

Two prominent Democratic figures with deep ties to the Clinton and Obama administrations publicly criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani this week, with former Clinton adviser Mark Penn attacking the mayor’s proposed property tax plan while former Obama White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel recounted what he described as a private conversation in which he challenged Mamdani’s rhetoric on Israel.

The criticism is notable because it comes from longtime Democrat insiders rather than Republican opponents and focuses on two of the issues that have defined Mamdani’s rise political rise: his far-left economic agenda and his positions on Israel.

Fox News Digital reached out to Penn, Emanuel and Mamdani’s office for comment.

Penn, a longtime Democrat strategist and former pollster and adviser to President Bill Clinton, accused Mamdani of dramatically understating the scope of his proposed pied-à-terre tax after the mayor released a public database identifying property owners who could be subject to it.

In a lengthy post on X, Penn argued the city’s valuation system had swept in nearly one million property owners rather than the roughly 30,000 luxury homeowners Penn said had previously been described as the intended targets.

“The $5 million figure was a fake,” Penn wrote, arguing the city’s valuation system had improperly classified properties and would force homeowners to prove they should not be taxed.

Penn also argued the proposal could depress property values, discourage investment in New York City and potentially raise constitutional questions.

Meanwhile, Emanuel said during an appearance on the Unholy Podcast that he met privately with Mamdani for roughly 90 minutes and challenged the self-described democratic socialist mayor over his views on Israel.

Emanuel said he praised portions of Mamdani’s domestic agenda, including childcare, but criticized Mamdani’s past use of the phrase “from the river to the sea.”

“I know where there’s a line. You don’t,” Emanuel recalled telling Mamdani.

Emanuel said both calls for a “Greater Israel” and the slogan “from the river to the sea” would lead to “perpetual conflict.”

After clips of Emanuel’s remarks circulated online, Mamdani communications director Anna Bahr publicly disputed the account.

“can confirm this …. did not happen,” Bahr wrote on X in response to a post summarizing Emanuel’s remarks.

It was not immediately clear from Bahr’s post whether she was disputing that the meeting occurred or Emanuel’s characterization of the conversation.

Emanuel has also recently criticized the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) more broadly. In a post on X this week, he argued Democrats should focus on winning competitive elections rather than what he characterized as ideological distractions.

“You can be focused on winning tough races, flipping red seats blue. Or you can be focused on abolishing prisons and… the Senate and Supreme Court? You can’t do both,” Emanuel wrote. “I’m for winning this November and ending Trump’s corruption — and I’m also for putting an end to all the distractions from the DSA.”

Penn, Emanuel and Mamdani’s office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s requests for additional comment before publication.

One of the Trump administration’s top health officials, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, is accusing Dr. Anthony Fauci, the longtime former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, of an abuse of power during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“He frankly abused the place of power that he had been given both by the media and by powerful politicians,” Bhattacharya told CBS News chief correspondent Matt Gutman in an interview Wednesday. Bhattacharya currently serves as both director of the National Institutes of Health and acting director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Bhattacharya alleged that Fauci’s “primary abuse” during the pandemic was that he “shut down scientific debate” and “denigrated scientists that disagreed with him, including myself and many, many others, simply for the sin of disagreeing with him.”

During the pandemic, Bhattacharya, then a professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine, was publicly critical of the federal government’s response and was vocal in his opposition to lockdowns and mask mandates.

In the interview, Bhattacharya took issue with Fauci’s leading role during the pandemic. “You know, he was the head of a research institute, he wasn’t the head of public health, yet he acted as if he were the head of public health in this country,” he said.

When it was noted the first Trump administration had informally elevated Fauci into that role at the pandemic’s onset, Bhattacharya countered that it was “absolutely imperative” that Fauci “convey clearly what is known and what is not known, that you don’t step beyond the role that you actually have based on the expertise that you have.”

The accusations Wednesday came hours after Fauci’s appearance before the Senate Homeland Security Committee under subpoena.

After reading an opening statement, Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment rights on all questions, saying he did so because the chairman, Republican Sen. Rand Paul, was attempting “to get me to say something, anything, that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up, in his words, quote, ‘behind bars,’ unquote.”

Over the weekend, Paul, a longtime Fauci critic, released a trove of more than 1,000 pages of diary entries that Fauci wrote during his time as NIAID director during the pandemic. After nearly four decades in the post, Fauci retired in 2022.

Bhattacharya said he supported the release of Fauci’s journal entries and noted they had been “kept on government servers.”

“They reflect somebody who had a tremendous impact on the lives of every single person in the country, and in fact in the world,” the acting CDC director said. “I think it’s in the public interest for those notes to be released.”

Bhattacharya argued there was a contradiction between Fauci’s public statements during the pandemic and his journal entries.

“The way he was thinking in private regarding all of the advice he was giving to tremendously powerful people, and what he showed in public, were very different,” Bhattacharya said.

As an example, Bhattacharya pointed to Fauci’s recommendation in early 2020 that schools be closed.

“He was making decisions about closing schools, in my view, against what the actual evidence was saying at the time,” Bhattacharya said. “… He conveyed a certainty that it turns out in his diary he didn’t even feel himself.”

As the federal government’s top infectious disease expert, Fauci didn’t have any direct power to impose restrictions or close schools, but his words carried weight with federal, state and local officials.

In a June 2024 interview with “CBS Mornings,” Fauci said he believed the initial school closures were “the right thing,” but agreed that keeping schools shuttered “for a year was not a good idea.”

“If you go back and look at the YouTube, I kept on saying, ‘Close the bars, open the schools. Open the schools as quickly and as safely as you possibly can,’” he said.

COVID origins controversy

Regarding the debate over COVID’s possible origins, Bhattacharya said he believes it likely originated in a lab in Wuhan, China. It is an issue that has been studied extensively with no clear consensus, and many scientists believe the evidence suggests a natural spillover of the virus from animals to humans is more likely.

“We don’t know for certain, but it seems really quite likely, given the evidence that I’ve seen, that it originated in a Chinese lab,” Bhattacharya said.

Asked whether he thought Fauci lied to the American people about COVID and its origins, Bhattacharya said, “I think that Dr. Fauci’s role in the COVID origins is much more complicated than he led on in his public statements earlier. Lie, I’ll leave for other people to say one way or the other.”

Fauci has long insisted he kept an open mind on research into the virus’ origins and denied downplaying it or misleading the public.
