Republicans are sounding the alarm that President Donald Trump’s demand to cancel August recess could cost the GOP seats in the midterms.

As the upcoming jailbreak from Washington, D.C., fast approaches, Trump’s most-prized legislative push remains stalled. He wants Republicans to stay put until it’s finished, but the political reality says otherwise.

And it comes as Republicans are desperate to get out of the Beltway and sell their accomplishments, rather than their shortcomings, to voters on the campaign trail. The GOP has more to lose than Democrats this cycle, too, with three vulnerable incumbents and a handful of others on the periphery.

“Canceling August recess, where we have to have our members out campaigning and connecting with their voters, and people not understanding that, is about as tone-deaf as telling everybody to stay home in 2020 when we lost Kelly Loefler and David Purdue,” Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., told Fox News Digital.

“It’s the same sort of thought process,” he continued. “It’s thinking that one branch runs this country and it doesn’t. If we don’t keep majorities, people are gonna regret it.”

Several of Tillis’ colleagues, however, disagree, and want the Senate to stay put until the SAVE America Act passes, be it through the party-line budget reconciliation process or by nuking the filibuster.

Trump’s pressure, the online zeitgeist and the political hot potato of the situation have put incumbents in a tough spot: go home and admit defeat, or stay put and push legislation that so far has not gone anywhere.

For many Republicans, they openly acknowledge that it’s a math problem in the Senate — the GOP does not have the votes to pass the SAVE America Act. Some argue that keeping the Senate in town likely wouldn’t change the minds of those who oppose it.

“If it would make a difference in the outcome, I’m fine with that, but it won’t make a difference, which I don’t believe it will, that it’s an act of futility,” Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, told Fox News Digital.

Both Cornyn and Tillis are retiring — Tillis opted to get out during the tumultuous period that was passing the “big, beautiful bill,” and Cornyn was kneecapped by Trump, who backed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over him in a grueling primary battle.

But Cornyn noted that if he was still running for office, he might have a change of heart.

“I don’t know how that would come out, but if I was running for re-election, I would vote to stay,” he said.

Cornyn’s point is the line that some vulnerable Republicans are toeing. Two Republicans running in tight races, Sens. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, and Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, told Fox News Digital that they have been voraciously pushing for the SAVE America Act.

But, Sullivan said that he didn’t want to comment on the president’s push to cancel recess, while Husted said it was always preferable to be back in Ohio with his constituents.

“But I also have a job here, and if the job requires me to be here, then I’ll be here,” he said.

Others in less tight races who support the legislation still understand the reality in the upper chamber: without changing the minds of a cohort of Republicans who have voted against it and flipping several Democrats, the SAVE America Act is going nowhere.

“I think to cancel the whole recess would be a problem, but I think to keep us up here another week or 10 days, certainly, I’m willing to do it. I’d stay here till November if I thought it would change things,” Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., told Fox News Digital.

But he acknowledged that coming home empty-handed was a problem, too.

“The base would be mad if we don’t make the best effort possible to get this voter ID across the finish line,” Marshall said.

Sen. Mark Kelly says Trump administration is “flailing” in Iran and “has to try to figure out a way out of this”

Washington — Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona said on Sunday that the Trump administration is “flailing” in its war with Iran, while urging the president to use a different tack to find a way out five months after the conflict began.

“They’re stuck, they’re responsible for this, and the president is the one that has to try to figure out a way out of this,” Kelly said on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.”

Kelly added: “I would suggest to him, though, that the solution is not to do the same thing that he’s been doing — not to have his real estate buddy and his son-in-law in charge of a negotiation.”

“To put some people in here that know how to do this, how to talk to the Iranians, and put a coalition together, bring our allies back together,” the Arizona Democrat said.

President Trump announced Saturday night that he was canceling a pending attack on Iran and indicated that a rough framework of a peace deal had been reached, after the conflict escalated in recent weeks following the collapse of a ceasefire last month. The president’s proposal calls for the U.S. and Iran to return to negotiations, a regional official involved in mediation efforts told The Associated Press.

The war, which began on Feb. 28, is unpopular among Americans, according to CBS News polling. But when asked which party has a better approach to Iran, 32% said Mr. Trump and the GOP, while 30% said Democrats. But Kelly put the blame squarely on the president, accusing him of getting into the war “without a strategic goal, without a plan, without a timeline.”

Kelly, who sits on the Senate Armed Services and Intelligence committees, also voiced concerns about the Pentagon’s funding requests, as the Trump administration pushes for $67 billion in supplemental funding and a broader $1.5 trillion budget request for fiscal year 2027. The Arizona senator referenced last year’s defense budget, which he said “was sold to us as a one-time generational investment in the department.”

“In my view, they squandered that,” Kelly said. “Now they’re coming and they’re asking for 1.5 trillion, plus a supplemental. We’re approaching the amount of money that every other country on the planet spends on defense in a year. This is irresponsible, and now they want a blank check.”

Kelly said while he’s going to “make sure the troops have what they need to defend themselves and defend the United States,” he stressed that the Pentagon needs to pursue a “reasonable approach.”

Kelly, a former astronaut and retired Navy captain, pointed specifically to space-based interceptors within the $1.5 trillion budget request, noting that “the physics on this is really very, very challenging.” He said “it’s not going to make us safer,” while arguing that “there are other systems that we don’t need.”

“They need to understand that we do not have unlimited resources in this country,” Kelly said.

前所未有的移民潮

法国国际广播电台（RFI）报道，西班牙飞地小城休达仅有8万多名居民，但仅短短几天就有高达6万名非法移民涌入，是西班牙近年来最严重的边境危机之一。专门报道北非移民事务的当地记者森布雷罗说，“每一分钟”就有200人左右进入。

匆匆赶来休达的西班牙内政部长星期六（8月1日）宣布，涌入的非法移民差不多已全部离开。他称：“情形完全颠倒过来”。

然而，这些不顾一切渡海而来寻求新生活的人，已有至少72人命丧大海。西班牙内政部指出，大部分是试图靠岸时被淹死的。

欧盟作出什么反应？

针对此次西班牙边境危机，欧洲右翼和极右翼势力几乎异口同声，借此质疑欧洲边境管控的有效性。意大利已于星期五（7月31日）宣布，暂时停止对西班牙适用申根区协议。

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin is facing a conservative backlash after reaffirming his opposition to amnesty in a social media post, with critics arguing the hardline message contradicted comments he made hours earlier during an immigration speech in Oklahoma.

Hours after speaking at the National Governors Association Summer Meeting in Oklahoma City, Mullin wrote on X: “NO amnesty for illegal aliens. Ever.”

“We are a nation of laws,” he wrote. “If you are illegally present in the United States of America—you will be detained and deported. Period.”

The post did little to quell criticism from some conservatives, who argued it conflicted with remarks Mullin made earlier in the day.

“Why were you at the National Governors Association Summer Meeting today saying the exact opposite of what you are posting now?” one user wrote on X. “Did you suddenly radically change your mind about America’s immigration policy in the past couple of hours? Or are you a liar?”

Former Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino also criticized Mullin’s remarks, writing on X that “Voters asked for mass deportations. Clear demand. High priority. No ambiguity.” He added, “The guy running DHS is making the case for ‘immigration reform.’ We’ve seen this script before.”

In a separate post, Bovino wrote that Mullin had delivered “a masterclass in how to give terrible answers during a single interview” and argued, “Now you know why we’re not getting mass deportations.”

Conservative commentator Robby Starbuck also weighed in, calling Mullin’s remarks “a total betrayal.”

During the event, Mullin argued the U.S. needs immigration reform, distinguished between immigrants pursuing legal status and those who are not, and called for changes to some employment visa programs to address labor shortages.

“We haven’t had actual immigration reform since 1959. There’s a reason. It’s political,” Mullin said. “Do you really need immigration reform? Yes, you do.”

Mullin also argued the country should modernize some employment visa programs.

“If we’re looking to grow our economy, then we need to look at making more permanent solutions,” he said, adding that “there’s a way to utilize labor where we’re not having the participation rate we need to… and we can plug those holes.”

At the same time, Mullin repeatedly emphasized that immigration laws must be enforced.

The controversy comes as the Trump administration has made immigration enforcement and mass deportations a cornerstone of its agenda.

“If you have a criminal background, we’re not making exceptions for you,” he said. “There are zero exceptions.”

Mullin added that immigrants who entered the country illegally or overstayed their visas without pursuing legal status could not expect relief.

“There’s nothing I can do for you,” he said.

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Detentions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement set a monthly record high for the second Trump administration in July, internal agency data obtained by CBS News shows, as ICE widened its crackdown, making arrests at airports, immigration check-in offices and communities across the U.S.

Last month, ICE took into custody more than 46,000 individuals facing deportation because of alleged immigration violations, like entering the U.S. illegally or overstaying their visas, according to preliminary Department of Homeland Security figures.

The statistics, which have not yet been publicly disclosed by the federal government, show that a summer enforcement surge by ICE continued to intensify in July, as the agency faced pressure from the White House to record 2,000 arrests across the country each day. An average of 1,500 detainees entered ICE custody each day last month, the data indicates, though some of them were first arrested by Customs and Border Protection agents.

The over 46,000 book-ins in July surpassed the roughly 43,000 detentions recorded by ICE in June, at the time the highest tally during President Trump’s second term. As of this weekend, ICE was holding 68,000 detainees in its sprawling detention system, approaching a record high of over 70,000 detainees set in January, according to internal agency figures.

The numbers also show the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration has rebounded this summer, following a significant drop in arrests earlier this year after federal agents killed two American citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, during an enforcement blitz in Minneapolis that garnered bipartisan criticism.

While the Trump administration has largely stopped the large-scale, sweeping immigration operations it conducted in several Democratic-led cities last year, ICE has managed to more quietly boost arrest levels in recent weeks, including through a crackdown at airports and traffic stops, and the deployment of newly hired agents across the country.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin replaced Kristi Noem this spring with the stated goal of keeping ICE out of the headlines, while simultaneously furthering Mr. Trump’s promise of overseeing the largest deportation operation in American history.

But the latest phase of the crackdown has reignited the country’s debate over ICE and its tactics. Last month, ICE officers in Texas and Maine, respectively, killed two immigrants, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, during attempted traffic stops, triggering local and national outcry.

The fatal shootings prompted ICE to pause most vehicle stops, but the moratorium was short-lived, with Mr. Trump intervening and overturning the pause just 24 hours later. Investigations into both killings continue at the federal and local levels.

Instances of ICE agents in plainclothes arresting people near gates and check-in counters at airports throughout the country have also sparked controversy in recent weeks, prompting angry bystanders to film the arrests, some of which have gone viral online. The arrests have been made possible by increased collaboration between ICE and the Transportation Security Administration, which has been providing agents information on noncitizen travelers, including those whose status has lapsed.

The Trump administration has additionally broadened the population eligible to be arrested and processed for deportation, mostly recently terminating the Temporary Protected Status of more than 300,000 Haitian migrants. According to officials and advocates, some Haitian migrants in Ohio have begun receiving notices to report to local ICE offices, sparking fears in communities like Springfield.

CBS News reached out to the Department of Homeland Security seeking comment on ICE’s summer surge.

“We’re turning up the heat on the streets,” Mullin said in a press conference last month. “We’re out there working harder than we’ve ever had because we’ve empowered our law enforcement to do their job.”

Theresa Cardinal Brown, an immigration official at DHS during the Obama and Bush administrations, said one main difference in ICE’s strategy since Noem was pushed aside is how operations are advertised. Under the “previous leadership,” she said, “there was an intent to make the enforcement public, to do it publicly, to be seen doing it.”

Now, Cardinal Brown noted, ICE is dramatically expanding enforcement without the same “in-your-face” approach as before.

But she said it’s clear “the administration never gave up on its goal of mass deportations.”

他写道：“美国已准备就绪，随时对伊朗发动袭击，军事恐吓、攻击力度强度都是自二战以来前所未见……但伊朗和其他中东国家刚刚请求我们暂缓攻击，因为各方已就一项协议的框架达成一致。”

特朗普说，这份协议框架包括“立即、全面、彻底地开放霍尔木兹海峡，并终止伊朗核威胁”。

“基于这份请求，为了世界未来的福祉，也为了伊朗的繁荣昌盛，我同意取消这次攻击，前提是能够迅速达成协议。以色列国也与我一道做出这项承诺。”

刚在周五（7月31日），美国《华尔街日报》报道才称，美军已接获命令最早本周末对伊朗发动新的打击。特朗普还在当天的内阁会议上表明，美方会重创伊朗，直至对方无法招架，了结这场持续近半年的战争。

以色列总理办公室尚未对特朗普的最新言论作出回应。

伊朗梅尔通讯社星期天（2日）则引述伊朗军方官员的话称，特朗普所谓德黑兰要求他暂缓袭击的说法“纯属谎言”，并表明伊朗军方“高度戒备，随时准备应对任何突发情况”。

虽然特朗普并未说明收到哪些中东国家的请求，但在宣布暂缓打击之前，他曾与美国盟友沙特阿拉伯的王储穆罕默德通话。沙特官方通讯社报道，穆罕默德在电话里强调，“必须优先开展对话来缓和紧张局势，并尽一切努力达成停火协议，为外交解决铺平道路”。

另一边，伊朗外长阿拉格奇周六分别与沙特和土耳其外长以及巴基斯坦陆军参谋长通电话。他警告美国军方切勿采取任何冒险行动，并称伊方已做好准备予以果断回应。

另据伊朗外交部在Telegram上发布的消息，阿拉戈齐还告诉沙特外长费萨尔，任何与美国的合作，都会招致伊军果断适当的回应。

区域局势升温 美国敦促在中东居民做好撤离准备

美伊4月停火后，原本在6月达成一项停战谅解备忘录，但7月初就翻脸，双方恢复相互攻击，伊朗也随之加强对霍尔木兹海峡的控制。

随着中东紧张局势再次升温，美国驻中东各国大使馆周六警告本国公民警惕地区冲突“不可预见的升级”，并做好撤离准备。

以色列第12频道新闻星期天报道，伊朗外长阿拉格齐已同意卡塔尔与美国斡旋达成的妥协协议，允许船只从伊朗控制的海湾进入，并从阿曼水域驶出。

不过，据伊朗半官方的法尔斯通讯社报道，近伊朗消息人士已迅速否认上述说法，并称只要美方继续采取敌对行动，霍尔木兹海峡就持续关闭。

Ceuta grapples with aftermath of massive border surge after most migrants leave territory

Most of the 60,000 North African migrants who entered the Spanish territory of Ceuta had been returned to Morocco by Sunday, officials said, but a cloud remains over the tiny enclave.

Shops in Ceuta reopened, and the usual blend of residents and tourists in the city of 84,000 were filling the open-air terraces, restaurants and cafes.

But the city that prides itself on being home to four cultures was still grappling with the aftermath of the border surge, with locals disagreeing on what caused it and who exactly is to blame. Meanwhile, Spanish civil guard ships continued searching for migrant bodies in the waters near the stretch of urban beach that had been breached by people days earlier.

Border surge breathes new life into Europe’s immigration debate

At least 72 people died, including some who drowned and others who were killed in a stampede to cross a breakwater barrier, Spanish authorities said Sunday. The humanitarian crisis caused by the sudden rush of people has reignited a debate around immigration in Europe and beyond.

“It’s not the young men’s fault,” said Mohamad Abdelkader Driss, 44, a waiter at a fried fish restaurant in town. “If you open the border, of course everyone comes in, but the young men aren’t to blame. The authorities are responsible.”

Some migrants who returned to Morocco described a border that was effectively open and said authorities did little as they watched thousands of people cross. Spain says it plans to construct a containment fence.

The unauthorized arrivals on Thursday and Friday of 50,000 to 60,000, mostly young men, swelled Ceuta’s population by more than half. Abdelkader lamented what happened, but said those who breached the border behaved relatively well.

“It could have been much worse,” he said.

Far-right politicians call for remaining migrants to be expelled

Over the weekend, far-right, anti-immigrant Spanish politicians and well-known right-wing influencers descended on the city, sparking counterprotests that included members of the Spanish city’s large Muslim population, many of whom are of Moroccan descent.

Alvise Pérez, a far-right Spanish politician and member of the European Parliament, called on Saturday evening for migrants to be expelled as he faced an angry crowd of rival protesters. Pérez eventually had to shelter in a bar as residents banged on the windows, until police escorted him away.

Among the counterprotesters on Saturday was 20-year-old Ceuta resident and student Noor Ahmed. She denounced the protest and presence of figures like Pérez in her city as opportunistic.

“They just want to take advantage of the humanitarian crisis Ceuta is currently experiencing,” Ahmed said.

Santiago Abascal, the leader of the far-right Vox party, visited Ceuta on Sunday, slamming the Spanish government for the surge in migrant arrivals, which he called “an invasion.”

“The frontiers of Ceuta and Melilla are the walls of our home and homeland, and they are not being protected by a corrupt and traitorous government,” he said.

Ceuta’s tradition of tolerance comes under strain

Some locals, even acknowledging Ceuta’s population of Christians, Muslims, Jews and Hindus that normally live in relative harmony, worried about what the week revealed about the city.

Eva Barrientos, a resident of Ceuta who works at a logistics company, came to the protest on Saturday evening to see what Pérez and the other right-wing figures had to say. She was confident that something similar would happen again and questioned the loyalty that some of Ceuta’s foreign-born residents had to Spain.

“In Ceuta, we have always lived together. We have four cultures living very well, without any problems,” she said. “But the only thing we are realizing now is that there is an enemy within.”

She accused some foreign-born residents of having more loyalty to Morocco than the country in which they lived.

Pope Leo XIV on Sunday said he was “following with concern the alarming situation in Ceuta, asking God … that solutions of peace, stability and justice may be found.”

Migration has been one of Pope Leo’s priorities, which he underlined during a recent visit to the Canary Islands in Spain, one of Europe’s main migrant entry ports.
