USTR seeks comment on possible US-China tariff cuts under Board of Trade

WASHINGTON, June 2 (Reuters) – The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative on Tuesday opened a public comment process on the “U.S.-China Board of Trade” agreed by the two countries’ leaders last month that could lead to both sides cutting tariffs on some non-strategic goods.

USTR said in a statement that it is seeking input on “specific types of non-sensitive products” that could benefit from tariff modifications on both sides, with comments due July 10.

The Reuters Iran Briefing newsletter keeps you informed with the latest developments and analysis of the Iran war. Sign up here.

The announcement marks an initial step towards implementing the Board of Trade body that President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to form at their mid-May summit in Beijing.

Officials from both countries described the effort as identifying about $30 billion worth of goods on each side that could be sustainably traded without crossing national security red lines and qualify for potential tariff reductions.

The USTR statement did not mention the $30 billion figure but asked U.S. stakeholders to broadly define eligible products. In a Federal Register notice, it asks: “What types of Chinese products, or Chinese products in particular sectors, should be considered non-sensitive in that they give rise to few, if any, issues related to economic and national security and supply chain resilience risks?”

It also asked what Chinese products now subject to Trump’s higher tariff rates should be imported at lower tariff rates such as the original “most-favored nation” rates that prevailed before Trump’s first term.

It asked for commentators to provide the annual average value of such imports from China in the 2022 to 2024 period along with which consumers would benefit, and which would be harmed by such an adjustment.

The agency is seeking similar information on U.S. exports to China now subject to additional tariffs, including agricultural products.

In addition, USTR is asking for views on how often the bilateral Board of Trade body should convene and when and how it should adjust the scope and mix of non-sensitive products.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said in a statement that the Trump administration would work with stakeholders “to identify non-sensitive goods trade that can deliver results for American farmers, ranchers, fishermen, small businesses, manufacturers, and workers.”

He said USTR also welcomed comments on effective ways to facilitate mutually beneficial China trade “while continuing to use tariffs to defend American economic and national security and promote balanced and reciprocal trade.”

  • CBS News

CBS News fires longtime “60 Minutes” correspondent Scott Pelley

    June 2, 2026 / 11:42 PM EDT / CBS/AP

CBS News has fired longtime “60 Minutes” correspondent and former “CBS Evening News” anchor Scott Pelley one day after he had a tense and confrontational exchange with new “60 Minutes” executive producer Nick Bilton during a staff meeting.

Bilton informed Pelley of the termination in a letter Tuesday evening.

“Yesterday’s performative display of hostility—enacted in front of the staff instead of in a civil, private conversation — demonstrated that you have no interest in contributing to the future success of the show, or approaching my new tenure with a mind open to collaboration and progress,” Bilton wrote.

Bilton wrote to Pelley that he “hijacked my first meeting with staff to disparage me, my qualifications, and my intentions with remarkable incivility and contempt.”

In the letter, Bilton also indicated that the two men had met again privately Tuesday, but Bilton wrote that Pelley had “made clear” in that second meeting he was “not interested” in “finding a path forward together.”

In a separate memo sent to “60 Minutes” staff informing them that CBS News had “parted ways” with Pelley, Bilton wrote, “I know how much Scott meant to many of you, and I don’t say this lightly. I made repeated attempts to have direct conversations with him over the weekend, and this afternoon I tried to find common ground. That was not the path Scott chose.”

CBS News has not commented on the firing.

In a “60 Minutes” all-staff introductory meeting Monday with Bilton, Pelley accused CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss of “murdering the show,” and accused Bilton of having “slender qualifications” for the job, according to multiple reports.

Bilton was named the new EP by Weiss last week.

Status, which specializes in media news and analysis and said it obtained a recording of the meeting, reported that Pelley began grilling Bilton about the firings last week of Bilton’s predecessor, Tanya Simon, and correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega.

Pelley also charged, according to Status, that Weiss herself had “no qualifications for her job,” and said the changes she had made to “CBS Evening News,” which Pelley once anchored, “have been catastrophic.”

It added that Bilton insisted that “Bari loves this institution” and “she loves ’60 Minutes’” — to which Pelley countered, “She’s murdering ’60 minutes.’ She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it and she’s doing exactly that.”

A person close to CBS News leadership, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press that both Weiss and Bilton had tried to reach out to Pelley late last week when the changes rocked the 57-year-old show to tell him that he was an integral part of “60 Minutes” and wanted him to remain so.

The person said Weiss and Bilton felt it was disappointing that Pelley’s accusations were being aired publicly despite efforts to engage with him privately.

The New York Times, which also reported that it had obtained a recording of Monday’s meeting, noted that Pelley’s “newscaster’s baritone” was shaking during the exchange. The newspaper also quoted an unnamed executive at the meeting as saying Weiss had been prepared to come, but “we asked her not to.”

The Status report noted that Pelley was applauded multiple times by other staffers during the meeting. It said Pelley focused on the firings last week, calling them “cruel.”

Bilton reportedly replied that he was not intimidated.

“I have been a journalist for 25 years, Scott,” he said.

Status quoted Bilton as saying, “I have sat and talked with incredibly powerful people like you have. None of it intimidates me, OK? So you are not going to intimidate me in front of this group of people.”

Reports about the contentious meeting came four days after Weiss told staff in a memo that it was time for a “new approach” at the top-rated newsmagazine.

In the memo, Weiss and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski said their goal was “building a show that thrives in the 21st century.”

“That requires a new approach,” they wrote, defining that approach as “expanding ’60 Minutes’ beyond a one-hour television broadcast, deepening its role across CBS News, and holding everything we produce to the ambition, fairness, and fearlessness that have defined ’60 Minutes’ at its best.”

    2026-06-03T01:24:51.134Z / https://www.reuters.com/world/us-supreme-court-clears-way-alabama-use-pro-republican-voting-map-2026-06-03/

US Supreme Court clears way for Alabama to use pro-Republican voting map

    2026-06-03T01:24:51.134Z / https://www.reuters.com/world/us-supreme-court-clears-way-alabama-use-pro-republican-voting-map-2026-06-03/

    • Summary
    • Lower court blocked pro-Republican congressional map
    • Three-judge panel cited intentional racial discrimination
    • Dispute follows Supreme Court’s Voting Rights Act ruling
    • Trump’s Republicans fighting to keep control of Congress

WASHINGTON, June 2 (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way on Tuesday for Alabama to use a pro-Republican congressional map that eliminates one of its two districts where Black voters make up a majority or near-majority, giving a boost to President Donald Trump as his party defends its control of Congress in November’s midterm elections.

The justices halted a lower court ruling that had blocked Alabama officials ‌from putting in place a map that aims to flip a U.S. House of Representatives district currently held by a Black Democratic congressman to the Republicans.

The action by the court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, came in an unsigned order. The three liberal justices dissented from the decision.

In its ruling, the conservative majority said Alabama was likely to ultimately defeat a legal challenge to its preferred map that was brought by several sets of plaintiffs including a group of Black voters.

Black voters typically support Democratic candidates. Republicans are defending narrow majorities in the House and Senate in the midterms.

The ruling on Tuesday cast doubt on the challengers’ claim that Alabama’s pro-Republican map violates the Voting Rights Act, a 1965 law intended to prevent discrimination in voting, and the U.S. Constitution’s promise of equal protection under the law.

“The state is likely to succeed on the merits as to both claims,” the conservative majority wrote. It added that, “States are free to decide for themselves whether last-minute changes to an election are in their best interests.”

The court’s action came amid a new and frenzied round of congressional redistricting that has unfolded across the South, as Republican-led states have scrambled to take advantage of an April Supreme Court decision that severely weakened the Voting Rights Act.

In the wake of that landmark decision, Tennessee approved a new map that broke up a majority-Black, Democratic-held district based in Memphis, while Louisiana adopted a plan to eliminate one of two districts with sizable Black populations in that state.

Alabama Republicans asked the Supreme Court to lift the judicial block put in place on May 26 by a federal three-judge panel that had halted the Republican-backed map’s use in the 2026 elections.

The lower court said the pro-Republican map intentionally discriminated against Black voters in violation of the equal protection principle and likely still violated the Voting Rights Act, even under the significantly heightened legal standard announced in the April ruling.

The Supreme Court’s three liberal justices condemned the majority’s decision in an opinion authored by Justice Sonia Sotomayor and joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson, writing that the ruling “disregards both democratic values and the rule of law.”

Deuel Ross, a lawyer for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, which represents a group of Black ‌voters that challenged Alabama’s map, said the Supreme Court’s ruling on Tuesday “gives cover to Alabama and others to deliberately and openly discriminate against Black voters without fear of any consequence.”

“The court’s shameless decision to reinstate an intentionally discriminatory map defies any thoughtful or consistent application of the law,” he said, adding that his group would continue to fight for Alabama voters “to have the fair representation that they deserve.”

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, a Republican, called the ruling “a major victory for Alabama and for the principle of self-governance.”

“The United States Supreme Court confirmed what we always knew: that Alabama’s Congressional maps are constitutional and lawful under the Voting Rights Act,” he said.

“The court’s decision to stay the district court’s injunction affirms that Alabama’s elected representatives, not federal judges, have the primary authority to draw the maps under which Alabamians choose their own leaders.”

Litigation over Alabama’s congressional map has ricocheted between the Supreme Court and the federal three-judge panel in recent years.

Republican state legislators have sought to return to a map they approved in 2023 that the same three-judge panel previously had deemed discriminatory. That map would drop the number of districts where Black voters comprise a majority or near-majority from two to one out of the state’s seven U.S. House districts. Black people make up about a quarter of Alabama’s population.

On May 11, the Supreme Court granted the state’s request to lift the lower court’s prior ruling blocking Alabama from using the map, before the three-judge panel weeks later imposed a new judicial block, prompting Alabama’s most recent filing to the justices.

Alabama Republicans had argued in their filing to the Supreme Court that voters would face “irreparable harm” if the state were required to use a map approved by the lower court instead of theirs.

In a process called redistricting, the boundaries of legislative districts across the United States are reconfigured to reflect population changes as measured by the national U.S. census every 10 years. Redistricting traditionally has been carried out by state legislatures at the start of each new decade, making the mid-decade redistricting fight now unfolding highly unusual.

Trump ignited the current battle last year by pushing Republican-governed Texas to redraw its electoral map in a bid to flip five Democratic-held U.S. House seats, setting off similar efforts in a number of other Republican- and Democratic-led states.

Lynette Hooker’s Bahamas disappearance being investigated as possible murder, official says

    June 2, 2026 / 8:07 PM EDT / CBS News

The case of Lynette Hooker, a Michigan woman who went missing in the Bahamas in April, is being investigated as a “possible foreign murder of a U.S. national,” a U.S. official told CBS News.

Search efforts for Hooker, 55, are still ongoing, as the 154-foot U.S. Coast Guard cutter Margaret Norvell arrived in Marsh Harbour on Tuesday carrying a team of specialized divers. The U.S. Coast Guard had been granted permission by the Bahamian government to send divers to canvass previously unsearched areas last week, a source briefed on the investigation told CBS News on Thursday.

The divers will be searching for new evidence, including Hooker’s body, based on GPS data gathered from an electronic device. Investigators have also been to the Abaco Inn, the last place Hooker was seen alive.

According to a U.S. official familiar with the matter, the government has been investigating the case as a possible foreign murder of a U.S. national for weeks, and that investigative posture has remained consistent. While public statements have generally described the matter as a “criminal investigation,” officials have been examining the case under the framework of a federal statute that covers the foreign murder of U.S. nationals.

No charges have been filed, and the official emphasized that the recent characterization should not be interpreted as a new development or shift in the investigation.

According to an official familiar with the investigation, the new digital forensic evidence appears to undercut Brian Hooker’s account of his wife’s disappearance. Brian Hooker told authorities that he and Lynette Hooker were on their dinghy going back to their sailboat, the Soulmate, when rough waters knocked her into the sea and left him drifting for several hours. Lynette Hooker was last seen near Aunt Pat’s Bay, near Elbow Cay and Hope Town, Brian Hooker told local authorities.

The U.S. official previously told CBS News the GPS data from one of Brian Hooker’s devices showed movements that did not align with what he told investigators. The data shows the device was out on the water, stopping in the Sea of Abaco before returning, the official said, giving investigators a more precise location to search.

Brian Hooker was arrested in connection with Lynette Hooker’s disappearance several days later, but was released and allowed to return to the U.S. He has denied wrongdoing and has not been criminally charged.

“The story didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me,” Troy Pritchard, a member of the initial search team, told CBS News. “But going on information that we had, we had to do our best to search what was told to us in the initial talks with the police.”

Baine and Marnee Stevenson, who are friends of Lynette Hooker’s, told CBS News they hope the new evidence helps solve the case.

“I’m hoping this is a step in the right direction for justice for Lynette,” Marnee Stevenson said.

“I have faith that following their GPS coordinates, they’re going to find something,” Blaine Stevenson added.
