    DETAILS:

    • Vincent Lang, 60, “was charged by indictment with one count of malicious damage by means of fire to a building used in interstate commerce and one count of damage to religious real property,” the DOJ said in a statement.
    • The indictment alleged “Lang carried out the act because of the religious character of that property, that is, because it was a mosque.”
    • The defendant has been detained in federal custody since his mid-July arrest, the DOJ said
    • The indictment alleges that, in the early hours of July 5, Lang maliciously damaged and destroyed, and attempted to damage and destroy, by means of fire, the Northeast Philadelphia Islamic Center.
    • Local media reported no one was injured in the incident.
    • If convicted, Lang faces a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison, with a mandatory minimum of five years’ imprisonment, the DOJ said.
    • A representative of Lang could not be reached for comment.
    • U.S. rights advocates have noted rising Islamophobia in the decades following the September 11, 2001 attacks, and more recently because of anti-immigration policies, white supremacy and the fallout from Israel’s war in Gaza.

(CBS News)

Sen. Marsha Blackburn wins Republican primary for Tennessee governor

    August 6, 2026 / 9:41 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Caroline Linton

Sen. Marsha Blackburn won the Republican primary for Tennessee governor on Thursday, The Associated Press projects, defeating Rep. John Rose.

Given Tennessee’s heavy Republican lean, Blackburn is considered the favorite in the November election against Democratic nominee Jerri Green.

Democrats have not won a statewide race in Tennessee since 2006. Incumbent GOP Gov. Bill Lee is prevented from running for reelection due to term limits.

With about two-thirds of ballots counted, Blackburn led Rose 43.8% to 32.6%, with Rose outperforming Blackburn around his Middle Tennessee House district, according to results compiled by the AP.

Rose was the first candidate to jump into the primary race last year, followed by Blackburn and then state Rep. Monty Fritts. Blackburn had early momentum in the race, although the single independent poll closer to primary day showed a closer race.

Rose pumped $13 million of his own money into the race, including $4.5 million in the last few weeks. Blackburn raised a total of $10.8 million.

All three candidates tried to paint themselves as the most conservative candidate in the race. Although President Trump did not endorse in this race, Blackburn had featured him heavily in her announcement video.

But Rose and Fritts attempted to cast Blackburn as not sufficiently aligned with Mr. Trump, noting that she said she voted to certify the 2020 election results. Rose also touted his support in the House for Mr. Trump’s SAVE America Act, which has not been brought to the Senate floor for debate, although Blackburn has said she supports it.

Trump-endorsed Rep. Andy Ogles projected to lose GOP primary in Tennessee

    August 6, 2026 / 11:29 PM EDT / CBS News

Two-term Rep. Andy Ogles lost the Republican primary for his Tennessee House seat, the Associated Press projects, despite securing an endorsement from President Trump.

With just over 80% of votes counted in Thursday’s primary, Ogles trailed former state Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Hatcher by just over six points, according to results compiled by the AP.

It marks the second loss this week by a congressional candidate backed by Mr. Trump, whose endorsement typically carries significant sway in Republican primaries. In a Michigan GOP House primary two days earlier, Trump-endorsed candidate Amir Hassan lost to Thomas Smith, who had suspended his campaign weeks earlier.

In a victory speech Thursday night, Hatcher said Ogles had called him to concede and offered to help him transition into the job.

“I don’t know what D.C. is going to be like. It’s going to be a new environment for me,” Hatcher told Nikki Hauser, a reporter for Nashville CBS affiliate WTVF. “I appreciate anybody that can mentor me and help me in that process … He was nice enough to do that, and I accepted it.”

A member of the hard-right House Freedom Caucus, Ogles secured the president’s endorsement last November, and Mr. Trump again urged people to vote for the “Conservative Warrior” in an Election Day social media post. But Hatcher was endorsed by Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and former Gov. Bill Haslam.

Ogles has drawn controversy for incendiary rhetoric on social media, including posts stating that “homosexuality has no place in America” and that “Muslims don’t belong in American society.” He deleted the post about homosexuality, saying the “stupid” and “hurtful” post was written by a member of his staff who was later “reprimanded.”

Ogles’ phone was seized by the FBI in 2024 as part of a campaign finance-related investigation. The lawmaker pushed back on the move, and the Justice Department agreed to return his phone earlier this year. He was not charged with a crime.

Earlier this year, Ogles’ district was redrawn as part of a broader redistricting effort that broke up Tennessee’s sole Democratic-leaning seat. The district previously covered parts of Middle Tennessee near Nashville, but it now snakes more than 200 miles from the Nashville suburbs to Memphis.

Both Ogles and Hatcher have sought to align themselves with Mr. Trump while running in the deep-red district. But Hatcher has taken some jabs at Ogles’ rhetoric, calling him a “show horse” and arguing: “Think what President Trump could do if our congressman spent less time talking and more time doing.”

Ogles was also outspent in the race, raising $613,135 to Hatcher’s $719,503, according to Federal Election Commission filings. And a pro-clean energy super PAC called the Invest In Tomorrow Coalition spent around $2 million to support Hatcher and oppose Ogles last month. The group’s donors include tech billionaire Chris Larsen and several renewable energy companies.

Ogles criticized the Invest in Tomorrow Coalition in the final days of the race, accusing national left-leaning group of “interfering in a Republican primary” and trying to buy his seat because he “openly fought against green energy subsidies in Congress.”

In a Thursday night statement, Invest In Tomorrow Coalition Chair Tom Matzzie vowed to “continue to punish members of either party who want to play politics with American jobs, energy security, and utility prices.”

“Tennessee’s 5th District just proved once again that standing in the way of America’s energy future comes with a hefty political price,” said Matzzie, who is also the CEO of electricity supplier CleanChoice Energy.

Hatcher will face Democratic nominee Chaz Molder in the November general election.

US to vet social media of foreign journalists applying for visas, report says

    • State Department uses “online presence vetting”
    • It says this is employed to ensure visa eligibility
    • US also tightens rules on foreign journalist stays

WASHINGTON, Aug 6 (Reuters) – The U.S. State Department will vet the social media accounts of foreign journalists applying for visas to work in the United ‌States, according to a media report on Thursday.

The report in the conservative news outlet The Daily Signal cited an internal memo that said an initiative by President Donald Trump’s administration that requires applicants for many visa types to make their social media accounts public for screening was being expanded to include foreign media representatives.

Jumpstart your morning with the latest legal news delivered straight to your inbox from The Daily Docket newsletter. Sign up here.

Applicants for another type of visa for workers from Canada and Mexico also will now be included in the screening, it said.

The White House and the State Department’s official accounts on X shared a link to the article, but the State Department declined to confirm the specifics of the report, citing a policy of not commenting on “purported internal documents.”

A State Department spokesperson said that what the department calls “online presence vetting” is used to ensure that applicants are eligible for a visa under U.S. law.

“The Department of State is screening and vetting to the maximum extent possible every foreign national seeking admission to the United States to ensure they will respect U.S. law including the terms of their admission and do not pose a threat to U.S. security, public safety or national interests,” the spokesperson said.

“Officers use a variety of methods to ‌make informed decisions that protect national security, prevent fraud and ensure a thorough review of applicants,” the spokesperson added.

It was unclear when the reported new policy would take effect.

The Department of Homeland Security tightened rules last month around how long foreign journalists working in the United States, as well as other visa holders including foreign students, could remain in the country.

It also builds on a series of steps that Trump’s administration has taken since he began his second term in taking office in January 2025 to make online speech a factor in immigration and visa decisions. These steps have raised concerns among civil liberties advocates about freedom of speech.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has said it will screen the social media posts of immigrants and visa applicants, including for what it deems antisemitic content and “anti-Americanism”. The administration has canceled the visas of foreign students in the United States who engaged in pro-Palestinian activism, in some cases attempting to deport those students.

The State Department said in October 2025 that it revoked the visas of six foreign nationals over comments about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, and said it would continue identifying visa holders it believed had celebrated the killing.

WASHINGTON, Aug 6 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday suggested that Dr. Anthony Fauci should be prosecuted, hours after Republican Senator Rand ‌Paulo said that he would ask the Justice Department to do so.

Fauci, who led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for 38 years, became the face of the response and a primary target of anger over measures taken against a virus that killed more than 1.1 million Americans.

When asked if the Justice Department should prosecute Fauci, Trump told reporters that former aides ‌Peter Navarro and Steve Bannon had faced similar action “over something that essentially was never prosecuted before, and there are sort of telltale signs of similarity.”

The Republican president added: “When you see that happen, you sort of say maybe he should (be prosecuted). What he did is far more serious than a lot of crimes, frankly.”

Nebraska regulator files complaint against The Andersons after unpaid farmer claim

    • Complaint alleges some grain deliveries remained unpaid for more than 900 days
    • The Andersons says it resolved matter before complaint and has paid for grain
    • Nebraska regulator seeks reports of delayed payments involving The Andersons or other licensed grain dealers

CHICAGO, Aug 6 (Reuters) – A Nebraska regulator said on Thursday it filed a complaint against Ohio-based agribusiness The ‌Andersons (ANDE.O), opens new tab over allegations the company did not make timely payments to a grain producer, and urged any farmers who have experienced similar payment delays to come forward.

The Nebraska Public Service Commission, which licenses commercial grain dealers in the state, said its Grain Warehouses and Dealers Department filed the complaint after investigating an allegation by a grain producer that The Andersons had not paid for 17 grain deliveries made between November 2023 and January 2024.

The company later told regulators it had withheld payment in one instance because it could not verify ownership of the grain.

The producer and The Andersons have since resolved the matter, according to the complaint, but an agency spokesperson said the investigation is ongoing.

The state licensing department, alleging that The Andersons is not in compliance with state laws regulating grain dealing, is asking the commission to order the Ohio firm to explain the delays. The complaint alleges some grain deliveries remained unpaid for more than 900 days and says the department could seek civil penalties, revoke the company’s license and bar it from operating in the state.

The agency, which did not name the grain producer who made the initial complaint, declined to comment further.

THE ANDERSONS SAYS IT PAID FOR GRAIN

In a statement, The Andersons said it had notified both the commission and the producer that the matter had been resolved prior to the complaint being filed, and that it ‌has paid for the grain.

“The Andersons takes its commitments to producers seriously,” said spokesperson Cheryl Vion-Hasenaur. She added the company would continue to cooperate with the commission.

Though the department’s complaint stems from a single report that has been resolved, the regulator said it was seeking information from any other Nebraska grain producers or sellers who have experienced delayed payments involving The Andersons or other licensed grain dealers.

“Our priority is protecting Nebraska’s grain producers and ensuring buyers meet their obligations under state law,” Grain Department Director Terri Fritz said in a statement. “If producers are not being paid in a timely manner, we want to hear from them.”

    blob:https://www.reuters.com/994c2673-bc68-41eb-a373-98d389eb14e4

The Andersons, based in Maumee, Ohio, is licensed as a grain dealer in Nebraska. The agribusiness firm, one of the largest U.S. ethanol producers, merchandises bulk grain commodities and operates a network of grain elevators.

The complaint follows the collapse last year of Omaha-based grain dealer Hansen-Mueller Co., which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November after Nebraska regulators suspended its grain dealer license over unpaid grain contracts.

That bankruptcy left farmers, trucking companies and other agricultural businesses seeking to recover more than $200 million, while the company’s $1 million state grain dealer bond covered only a portion of approved claims from Nebraska farmers.

Industry groups and regulators have said the Hansen-Mueller case underscored the financial risks producers face when grain dealers become insolvent, particularly during periods of economic stress in the farm sector.

Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong defends her past controversial social media posts during an interview with Dana Perino. Hong discusses her support for defunding police, abolishing ICE and her socialist platform. Recent polling shows Hong trailing her Republican opponent Tom Tiffany by three percentage points as campaign finance reports reveal a massive fundraising gap between the candidates.

The battle between the left-wing and the center-left establishment for the ideological future of the Democratic Party is staying put in the Midwest.

After far-left candidate Abdul El-Sayed narrowly edged out more moderate Rep. Haley Stevens this week in battleground Michigan’s high-stakes Democratic Senate primary, the spotlight now shifts to nomination showdowns next week in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

At stake: a top-tier Senate showdown in Minnesota that’s among a dozen races nationwide that will determine if the Democrats can win back control of the chamber from the GOP, and a gubernatorial face-off in crucial swing-state Wisconsin where Republicans are aiming to flip the governor’s mansion.

“Michigan proved that working people are ready for something different, and Wisconsin is next,” Democratic candidate for governor Francesca Hong wrote following El-Sayed’s victory.

EL-SAYED’S VICTORY GIVES DEMOCRATS’ LEFTWARD LURCH MORE LEGS

Hong, a state representative and Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member, is the polling frontrunner in a Democratic gubernatorial nomination showdown that’s been rocked this summer after two major contenders dropped out and another candidate re-entered the race.

The primary winner will likely face off in the general election with Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany, the overwhelming polling and fundraising frontrunner for the GOP gubernatorial nomination, in the race to succeed Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, who decided against running for a third term.

Hong, a former chef, is backed by top nationally known progressives, including Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Ro Khanna of California, a potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender.

She is running on a platform that includes guaranteed paid leave and a one-year moratorium in Wisconsin on building AI data centers. Hong has faced scrutiny over years-old social media posts calling for defunding and abolishing the police. Hong says she no longer supports cutting police budgets or abolishing police departments.

MEET THE FAR LEFT INSURGENTS WAGING WAR ON THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IN THE 2026 MIDTERMS

Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong listens to Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., speak before being introduced during a campaign rally on Aug. 2, 2026 in Milwaukee.(Joshua Lott/Getty Images)

But Hong’s made national headlines in recent days over a resurfaced 2020 social media post that the country should “cancel Thanksgiving” in order to “stop celebrating colonialism and the original superspreader event that killed Indegenous folx [sic.] and women.” It’s a comment she has since walked back amid backlash, and now says that Thanksgiving is her “favorite holiday.”

There’s a growing number of moderate Democrats who worry that if Hong captures the gubernatorial nomination, as many expect, it will give Tiffany a big boost in his bid to flip the governor’s office.

A Wisconsin-based Democratic strategist who asked to remain anonymous to speak more freely argued with Hong at the top of the ticket, “it will hurt Democrats down ballot, in key congressional and legislative races” in the Midwestern battleground.

In Minnesota, which also holds primaries next Tuesday, the Democratic Party’s civil war is also on display as progressive Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan and more moderate Rep. Angie Craig are the top two contenders battling for the party’s nomination. The current senator, Democrat Tina Smith, is retiring at the end of this year.

A primary victory by Flanagan, who is backed by progressive champions Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, may boost the GOP hopes of flipping the seat in a blue-leaning but competitive state.

Michigan’s primary came in the wake of left-wing victories in Democratic primaries this spring and earlier this summer in deep blue congressional districts across the country, including in New York City and Denver, and in the extended race for Maine’s Democratic Senate nomination.

More than $80 million was spent on the Michigan Senate primary, making it the most expensive Democratic Senate nomination contest in history. Much of the money came from outside groups supporting Stevens or opposing El-Sayed. The largest spender was United Democracy Project, a political action committee aligned with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which is best known by its acronym AIPAC.

Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC), a leading group on the left, referred to El-Sayed’s narrow margin over Stevens and told Fox News Digital that “any win against $60 million dollars of outside spending by AIPAC and corporate interests is a giant win and sets us on a path of proving our case in November to shake up the system.”

El-Sayed’s razor-thin win was accompanied by two other progressive victories.

William Lawrence, a co-founder of the Sunrise Movement climate advocacy group, edged out two more moderate Democrats in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, a Republican-controlled swing seat that is among roughly two dozen races expected to help determine control of the House.

Lawrence, who was backed by Sanders and El-Sayed as well as several prominent progressive groups, will face Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in the general election.

And in Michigan’s heavily Democratic 13th Congressional District, Rep. Shri Thanedar, who was supported by top House Democratic leaders, was narrowly defeated by state Rep. Donovan McKinney. McKinney was backed by Sanders, El-Sayed and “Squad” members Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Summer Lee of Pennsylvania.

There was a setback for the far-left: DSA member and former Squad member former Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri was crushed by Democratic Rep. Wesley Bell in their rematch, as she unsuccessfully tried to win back her old seat in Congress representing St. Louis.

But El-Sayed’s victory and the potential wins by the left next week are further fueling the ongoing Republican push to characterize all Democrats on the ballot in the midterms as far left radicals, or as President Donald Trump calls them, “communists.”

Aug 6 (Reuters) – The bipartisan ethics proposal senators have pitched to President Donald Trump to get landmark crypto legislation over the line in Congress could trigger ‌a significant tax benefit for the president, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday.

The benefit will include the ability to defer capital gains levies on his crypto holdings, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.

The ethics addendum to the crypto bill, which has yet to be released publicly and is still being negotiated between the White House and lawmakers, includes a provision requiring the president to divest from crypto-related businesses, Bloomberg reported.

The White House did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on the report.

In June, ‌Trump reported more than $1.4 billion in income from his family’s crypto ventures last year, showing how he now derives most of his income from digital assets that have benefited from his policies.

Dubbed the Clarity Act, the landmark bill aims to clarify financial regulators’ jurisdiction over the burgeoning crypto sector, potentially boosting the adoption of digital assets.

Key Senate Democrats had conditioned their support for the long-awaited bill on a strong ethics provision that would address the ability of political figures, including Trump, to profit from personal crypto ventures.
