Trump-endorsed former Oklahoma state Sen. Mike Mazzei, R-Bixby, and Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond advanced to the August 25 runoff in the Sooner State’s Republican gubernatorial primary, defeating a slew of other candidates vying to replace term-limited Gov. Kevin Stitt.

Stitt — recently the top Republican at the National Governors Association — was term limited.

Trump called Mazzei a “MAGA warrior” who “will never let you down,” throwing the already crowded contest into further uncertainty.

Until that point, Attorney General Gentner Drummond and Mazzei were locked in a tight race with businessman Chip Keating and former Oklahoma House Speaker Charles McCall, R-Tishomingo.

THE BALLOT BOX SHOWDOWNS THIS MONTH THAT YOU NEED TO WATCH

President Donald Trump wrote that both Florida House seats were won decisively by the Republican candidate, stating the Trump endorsement proved more influential than Democratic opposition.

Trump noted he “won big” in Oklahoma — which, along with West Virginia, is one of only two states with no blue counties in election results.

Mazzei is running on top issues, including eliminating state property taxes, protecting state lands from foreign purchasers, increasing the state’s literacy rate, and cutting waste and abuse from government.

In the latter regard, Stitt appointed Mazzei as his state budget director for part of his term.

Some critics targeted Mazzei for hiring former Nixon campaign figure and Trump ally Roger Stone as a political consultant during his campaign.

Stone, one of the most prolific conservative consultants of the 20th century, famously had his Fort Lauderdale home raided in the middle of the night by the FBI while CNN was waiting and filming, sparking national uproar.

“Roger Stone is one of many political advisers and teammates that we have going back months and months and months,” Mazzei told Oklahoma City’s ABC affiliate.

“And, of course, it’s helpful to have someone on your team that’s aware of what’s going on in Washington, D.C. And the aspects of a Trump agenda and how they fit with an Oklahoma agenda.”

Drummond is running on his tough-on-crime record as attorney general, immigration enforcement efforts, career as a fighter pilot and ties to Trump similar to those touted by Mazzei.

“When his nation called, Captain Gentner Drummond answered with courage. Leading the first U.S. combat mission of the Gulf War, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for “extraordinary achievement.” By the end of Operation Desert Storm, Capt. Drummond was one of the most highly decorated Oklahomans of the war,” a statement on his campaign website reads.

Drummond highlighted his efforts fighting “the Biden administration’s radical overreach, including failures on immigration” and policies permitting biological boys in girls’ sports.

McCall ran on a platform of “family, faith and moral leadership,” and burnished his state legislature credentials and record.

He wants to abolish both the state income tax and property tax, and put forward an economically conservative plan of action.

Keating, who also served in the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, noted on his campaign website he is the only former law enforcement officer running for governor.

Keating pushed a public safety-first platform targeting trafficking, open borders and Antifa, whom he described as “radical domestic terrorists.”

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has moved detainees out of a controversial detention center in the Florida Everglades known as “Alligator Alcatraz,” an ICE spokesperson told CBS News, citing safety concerns around hurricane season.

“For the safety of the illegal alien detainees, we transferred them to other facilities,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

CBS News Miami reported last month that companies hired by the state of Florida to operate Alligator Alcatraz were notified that the facility was being shut down, with roughly 1,400 remaining detainees expected to be removed.

Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin later told CBS News the agency didn’t have any near-term plans to close the facility. But he acknowledged it faces weather-related “vulnerabilities.”

“We have plans in case of a natural emergency such as a wildfire or hurricane, to have to be able to bring it down and pull the individuals out,” Mullin said.

Located on an unused airstrip in the middle of the Everglades, Alligator Alcatraz was opened last year, as the Trump administration sought to rapidly grow ICE’s detention capacity in order to surge arrests and deportations. Detainees at the makeshift facility were housed in large air conditioned tents, filled with rows of bunk beds and cells formed by chain-link fences.

The administration has cast Alligator Alcatraz as a cost-effective way of housing people accused of being in the U.S. illegally, and argued it could be a model for other immigration detention centers set up by states.

Some officials have also suggested Alligator Alcatraz austere setup and harsh surroundings could be a deterrent against illegal immigration. During a visit last summer, President Trump said, “We’re going to teach them how to run away from an alligator if they escape prison.”

And former Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem delivered a warning that people in the U.S. illegally who do not “self-deport” from the country “may end up here.”

Alligator Alcatraz drew intense criticism and legal pushback from immigration advocates, environmental groups and a local Native American tribe. Critics alleged inhumane conditions, including poor food, nonfunctional toilets and a lack of access to attorneys. The Trump administration has denied that conditions at the detention center were inadequate.

US judge limits enforcement of Idaho’s transgender bathroom access law

    2026-06-17 02:13:36 UTC / Reuters

    By Steve Gorman

June 17, 2026 2:13 AM UTC Updated 1 hour ago

    • Idaho ‘bathroom bill’ considered most restrictive in US
    • Law restricts public restroom use according to birth sex
    • Judge backs argument that law is constitutionally vague

June 16 (Reuters) – A federal judge on Tuesday barred Idaho from fully enforcing a new state law making it a crime, punishable by up to five years in prison, for transgender people to use public restrooms whose designations differ from their sex assigned at birth.

The Idaho statute, the most restrictive among various laws enacted in ‌about 20 U.S. states limiting access of transgender people to bathrooms conforming with their gender identity, was due to go into effect on July 1.

But U.S. District Judge Amanda Brailsford, sitting in Boise, the state capital, granted a preliminary injunction curtailing the measure’s enforcement while a class-action lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the statute proceeds.

Brailsford’s order allows transgender individuals to continue using single-stall restrooms matching their gender identity, or to use a multi-stall restroom when a single-stall facility is not available on the same floor of a building.

Otherwise, the state is free to enforce the law as it applies to multi-user bathrooms, as well as to portions of the law covering public locker rooms and shower facilities, which were not subject to the court challenge.

While the plaintiffs sought a narrowly tailored injunction temporarily barring only what they viewed as the most onerous parts of the statute, they are seeking a final court ruling that would throw out all restroom restrictions in their entirety.

The thrust of the lawsuit argues that the statute violates the plaintiffs’ rights to due process, equal protection and privacy under the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

In her 30-page opinion, Brailsford sided with the plaintiffs on the question of due process, finding them likely to prevail on their claim that law enforcement provisions of the measure are unconstitutionally vague.

That finding alone was sufficient, she said, to override the state’s public safety arguments and issue an injunction without yet considering plaintiffs’ privacy and equal protection claims.

JUDGE NOT SWAYED BY STATE’S SAFETY CLAIMS

Proponents of the new law have asserted that its aim is to make public bathrooms safer and to prevent sexual assault or voyeurism in women’s restrooms by men posing as transgender.

The judge agreed that the ‌state has a valid interest in “promoting bodily privacy and protecting women and children in public restrooms from those who may seek to do harm,” but ruled that those concerns can be addressed by existing criminal laws “without infringing upon plaintiffs’ constitutional rights.”

The plaintiffs have argued that rather than make public restrooms safer, the measure will instead expose transgender people to “likely violence, harassment and psychological harm.”

The Republican-controlled Idaho legislature “relied on inaccurate beliefs and stereotypes about transgender people” in crafting the statute, “conflating transgender people with sexual predators,” the lawsuit asserts.

Idaho is one of about 20 states with some form of bathroom access restrictions for transgender people on the books, according to a tally by the Movement Advancement Project, a think tank that advocates for LGBTQ rights.

Just three other states besides Idaho – Utah, Kansas and Florida – use the threat of incarceration to enforce such laws. But Idaho’s measure is broader in scope and carries tougher criminal penalties than the others.

The statute makes it a crime to enter a restroom, changing room or shower designated for the opposite biological sex in government buildings, restaurants, stores and other private businesses when those facilities are open to the public.

The first offense under the new restrictions would be a misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail, while a second offense within five years would be a felony, carrying a maximum five-year prison sentence.

Idaho passed two previous laws curbing access to bathrooms in public schools and on college campuses to students whose birth sex corresponds to the gender designation of the facility in question, and seeks to enforce those by allowing students to sue if they encounter a transgender person in violation.

Both those statutes are under legal challenge and remain in effect as they wend their way through the courts.

A barn fire at the Saratoga Casino Hotel Harness Track in Saratoga Springs, New York, killed 17 horses and injured another early Tuesday morning, fire and casino officials said.

The fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. in the backstretch area of the harness racetrack, the casino said. Of the 17 horses that were killed, 11 belonged to trainer Robyn Mongiardo and six belonged to trainer Timothy Benson.

No people were killed or injured.

The Saratoga Casino Hotel is not related to or affiliated with Saratoga Race Course, which is located across the street and is where the Belmont Stakes have been held for the last three years while Belmont Park was under construction.

The casino said the fire was contained before it could spread and only affected the one barn. Officials from both race tracks and emergency responders helped evacuate other horses being housed at other nearby facilities, Saratoga Casino Hotel said. The casino said around 350 horses are usually housed in the backstretch area.

“The loss suffered today is heartbreaking for our racing community,” Saratoga Casino Hotel CEO Sam Gerrity said in a statement. “Our thoughts remain with Robyn, Tim, their teams, the horse owners, and everyone affected by this tragedy. We are deeply grateful to the security personnel, first responders, and racing staff whose swift actions helped protect the horses and people in the surrounding barns.”

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear and is under investigation, the Saratoga Springs Fire Department said.

Saratoga Casino Hotel said it will be working with Saratoga Hospital to help provide grief counseling for trainers, caretakers and owners who were affected by the horses’ deaths.

“This is a sobering day in our industry, a horse person’s worst nightmare. We express our deep condolences to all impacted and thank all emergency responders and track workers for their quick response,” said Henry Westbrook, president of the Saratoga Harness Horseperson’s Association.

‘We want to get this thing over with’: How Trump officials overcame skepticism of Iran to reach an agreement

    2026-06-16T20:08:14.924Z / CNN

Over the past two weeks, President Donald Trump’s national security team met nearly every day to discuss an evolving agreement to end the Iran war, with many concerned that Tehran would not hold up its end of the bargain, administration officials directly involved in the negotiations said.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth were among the “most pessimistic” about whether the Iranians would honor their commitments to make substantive concessions on their nuclear program, even if they agreed to negotiate on that issue, one of the officials said. But at various points, nearly ever senior official — including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President JD Vance and Trumps envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner — raised serious reservations, the officials said.

They ultimately reached Trump-driven consensus: “We want to get this thing over with,” an administration official directly involved in the talks told CNN. During an internal meeting at the White House roughly two weeks ago, they decided to press for a general agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and outline a broad framework on dismantling Iran’s nuclear program. None ultimately opposed moving forward on that, an official involved in the talks said, and the administration decided to reassess where things stand during a 60-day period for highly-technical talks.

“The consensus of the team was we want to get this thing over with, and the deal is the way to do it in a way that maximizes our upside and minimizes our downside,” the official said. “That was sort of the way that we approached it, and all of us have different concerns and different questions.”

The president’s view, another person familiar with the matter said, was key.

“We ended the war because Donald Trump wanted to end the war, and felt like he had enough to end the war,” the person said. “The entire administration is aligned on ending this.”

The internal debate and discussion had raged for weeks, and Ratcliffe, in particular, offered blunt assessments of what he viewed as Iran’s possible duplicitousness, officials said. One source said that, at times, Ratcliffe has pointed out that the intelligence the CIA has collected on Iran does not line up with the commitments Iran is making to the US, both in official and back-channel conversations. But that source added: “The director wasn’t taking a position. He doesn’t take policy positions.”

“Obviously he gives deference to Vance and Witkoff and Kushner — they’re the ones doing the actual negotiations. He’s not negotiating at all, he’s not a policymaker. He provides the intelligence backdrop to those negotiations,” the source said.

Another US official said virtually everyone shared Ratcliffe’s skepticism of Iran. “They lie like we breathe,” said one US official, “so we expect that.”

The official said, though, that intelligence of an opposing side’s private view of a deal is “always lagging” and generally indicates wariness of negotiations.

“They end up, like, talking about every way they can avoid doing the deal, and then if we’re skilled, we’re able to get them to a place where they have no choice but to do the deal we want,” the official said.

The US official said the Iranians were privately “telling us all the right things,” which helped persuade the administration to move forward.

“Whether they are being honest is a question, whether they have the political ability and maneuver in their system is a question, but I think that the consensus view was that we should proceed to this phase,” the official said.

A Pentagon spokesman said Hegseth was aligned with Trump’s goals. “Of course, Secretary Hegseth supports the Peace Deal with Iran and all of President Trump’s objectives,” chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell told CNN in a statement.

A White House official said in a statement: “President Trump listens to all opinions on any given issue — but everyone understands he is the final decisionmaker. This MOU meets all of the redlines that the administration has long articulated by ensuring that Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon, they cannot keep their highly enriched uranium, and they cannot hold the world’s energy supply hostage. The President will only agree to a good deal for the American people, and both this MOU and a final agreement will ensure the short- and long-term safety and security of the United States.”

    The CIA declined to comment.

Inside the West Wing, many senior officials had long been pushing for an off-ramp from the war, motivated by a wide range of factors.

Members of Trump’s political team advocated for a way out to protect vulnerable Republicans ahead of the November midterm elections and the president’s political legacy. Treasury Scott Bessent shared concerns over the war’s detrimental impact on the economy. Energy Secretary Chris Wright was wary of the effects to the world’s energy industry, officials familiar with the matter said.

“There was broad acknowledgement that if this went on, it was going to get even worse,” one source familiar with the talks said.

White House chief of staff Susie Wiles is viewed internally as a leading voice in wanting to end the war, the officials said. She has repeatedly told White House advisers to be more honest with the president about the realities of the war and more vocal in their perspectives so he has all the necessary information to make his decision, officials said.

One source said she wanted to “wrap this up for a long time.”

Witkoff and Kushner, who have been at the forefront of direct negotiations with Middle Eastern mediators and the Iranians over the course of the war, were viewed internally as more optimistic about the possibility of reaching a deal, though they also had approached Iran’s dedication to the nuclear provisions with a dose of skepticism.

“But not a single person stepped up and said no, this is a bad idea. Everybody was pretty much on board, like, ‘yeah, let’s make this deal, let’s open the straits, and then let’s see where we are in a few months,’” an administration official said.

Trump, too, very much wanted the war to end. Officials argued that the president’s very vocal and public criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the G7 summit this week shows how personally invested he has become in ending the war. Trump has been incredibly frustrated with what he views as Netanyahu acting to undermine the agreement, they said.

The administration official said the administration essentially decided two weeks ago on the broad outlines of a deal it would find palatable. “If we can open the straits, if we can get some commitments on the nuclear material, and if we can make sure that we don’t have to give anything until they give everything — that basic three-part structure was agreed upon as of a couple of weeks ago,” the official said. They then worked to get Iran to commit.

“We were focused on Iran,” Trump said Tuesday. “That’s going to be in the back, in the rearview mirror.”

No text of a deal has yet been released, and the administration already has faced criticism from some GOP hawks. It’s been Vance, one of the war’s most vocal internal skeptics, who was left to sell it to the public, with one Vance official noting he already had a series of media interviews scheduled to promote his new book.

The vice president said on the “Megyn Kelly Show” Tuesday that “delicate diplomatic” considerations were stopping the US from releasing the text of the agreement, because mediators had asked the US “to sequence this in the right way.” And while he defended its terms, he also suggested the US was in a good position even if Iran ultimately walked away.

“But if they don’t comply with the deal, the straits are still open, we’ve still done incredible damage to their nuclear program, and it’s really, you know, we can get on with our lives as a country,” he said.
