    Instagram

DOJ argues Comey novel shows he knew ‘86 47’ post was a threat against Trump

WASHINGTON, Aug 19 (Reuters) – The U.S. Justice Department has cited a legal thriller written by James Comey as evidence the former FBI director knew his social media post that featured the numbers “86 47” would be interpreted as a threat against President Donald Trump.

U.S. prosecutors, in court filings published late on Tuesday, said Comey’s novel, in which a right-wing podcaster uses coded language to encourage his followers to target political opponents, has parallels with Comey’s 15-month-old post that depicted seashells arranged on a beach to form the numbers “86 47.”

“Just days before releasing a book about a charismatic public figure who publicly conveys messages instructing his followers to ‘get rid of’ his political enemies … Comey posted a message that many observers, including federal and local law enforcement officers, reasonably interpreted to mean ‘kill President Trump,’” prosecutors wrote in the court filings.

Trump’s Justice Department made that claim as it urged a judge to reject Comey’s attempts to have the case thrown out as vindictive prosecution and a violation of his free-speech rights.

Comey, who was fired by Trump as FBI director in 2017, has denied wrongdoing. He is charged with threatening the U.S. president and transmitting a threatening communication. His lawyers have argued the case was brought as retribution for Comey’s criticism of Trump, and that the post did not meet the legal threshold of a threat of violence.

    SEASHELLS AND SLANG ON INSTAGRAM

Comey’s May 2025 Instagram post combined the slang term “86,” meaning to remove or expel, with a reference to Trump as the 47th U.S. president. The phrase has been used by others as an anti-Trump protest slogan.

Comey has said he saw the shell formation while on a walk on a North Carolina beach with his wife and interpreted it as a clever political statement. He deleted the post after it generated controversy, saying he did not know the numbers could be associated with violence.

Comey’s defense lawyers have produced evidence that the FBI tried unsuccessfully to show that Comey was aware of a violent interpretation of “86” from his work prosecuting mob figures in New York.

Federal prosecutors have also implied that Comey sought to use the incident to drum up publicity for the novel “FDR Drive,” which was published in May 2025. They referenced a text that he reportedly sent to his agent saying attention from the incident was “not my intention, but I’ll be OK if it sells books.”

The novel tells the story of a federal prosecutor who seeks to build a case against the right-wing media personality accused of inspiring violent acts. It is one of several legal thrillers Comey has written.

DSA’s growing grip on Dem Party hits new territory as establishment falls in line

The expansion aims to boost rural and southern chapters as socialist candidates defeat establishment Democrats in primaries

    August 19, 2026 2:02pm EDT / Fox News

By Ashley J. DiMella Fox News

Former Missouri congressional candidate Hartzell Gray explains why he believes his socialist platform represents the future of the Democratic Party as DSA-backed candidates pick up seats.

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

The Democratic Socialists of America is expanding its influence inside the Democratic Party, as socialist-backed candidates rack up primary wins and establishment Democrats increasingly fall in line behind them.

That dynamic is now reaching Georgia, where Sen. Jon Ossoff backed Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed after his primary victory, even as Republicans seek to make El-Sayed’s socialist support and political associations an issue in Ossoff’s own race.

The victories are creating a new political vulnerability for Democrats, as party leaders increasingly close ranks behind candidates backed by the left while Republicans try to tie them to the socialist movement’s policies and allies.

“The primary is in the past and the nominee has my support,” Ossoff said after El-Sayed emerged victorious from Michigan’s Democratic primary.

The Atlanta DSA chapter also opened its first independent office in August, giving the organization a permanent organizing base in Georgia.

Ossoff is not alone. Rep. Haley Stevens, who warned during the Michigan primary that Democrats embracing socialism were “missing” what was at stake, rallied behind El-Sayed after narrowly losing to him.

“That’s called democracy,” Stevens said of backing El-Sayed. “You don’t sign up for a Democratic Party to be salty grapes and… just continue to hold a grudge.”

The post-primary unity gives Republicans a chance to argue that Democrats who once distanced themselves from socialism are now supporting socialist-backed candidates.

“Jon Ossoff’s big plan is to abandon Georgia to run for president, but he can’t do that without the support of the communist wing of his party, which calls all the shots. To seek the blessing of the communists, Ossoff knew he had to endorse the Islamo-Marxist Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan,” Georgia GOP Senate candidate Mike Collins’ campaign adviser Tim Murtaugh told Fox News Digital.

“But he must also know that he gets everything that comes along with that, including the dangerous anti-American, racist, anti-Jew, pro-Marxist junk. By wrapping his arms around the most radical elements of his party, Jon Ossoff has embraced the unembraceable,” Murtaugh added.

Socialists see the same election results very differently. Hartzell Gray, a DSA member and former congressional candidate, called recent primary victories the movement’s “scoreboard.”

“We come with a movement. We cannot be stopped,” Gray told Fox News Digital. “And no matter what one person or one personality that’s gonna be targeted, there’s a whole lot of personalities that are reclaiming our power.”

Socialist streamer Hasan Piker’s continued association with El-Sayed has come under fire from Republicans and other critics, particularly as Piker faces renewed scrutiny over inflammatory remarks from his past.

Piker has faced widespread criticism for saying that “America deserved 9/11” and, in another resurfaced remark, calling to let the streets soak in “red capitalist blood.”

Weeks before the primary, El-Sayed was pressed on Piker’s remark during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“It was a dumb statement,” El-Sayed said, while making clear that he did not believe America deserved the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, but rejected the idea that Piker should be cast aside over it.

Piker endorsed and supported Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, and the two have since appeared together at events. Sanders, when previously asked about Piker’s 9/11 remark, similarly called it “a dumb statement.”

Gray also rejected the idea that Piker’s rhetoric should make him politically untouchable.

“I’ll tell you right now, if given the chance to go back on, I go on again and again,” Gray told Fox News Digital of appearing on Piker’s podcast. “I’d be a weekly correspondent. I’ll make my own theme song.”

Gray argued that Piker is helping to “reclaim the American promise” as socialist candidates challenge Democratic establishment figures around the country.

“It is working people who have been exploited along the way that have made our folks successful and whatever that is that that means,” Gray said.

The socialist movement notched another major victory Tuesday, when DSA member Angie Nixon upset Alex Vindman in Florida’s Democratic Senate primary, becoming the party’s nominee to face Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in November.

    2026-08-19T16:23:53.003Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/19/politics/trump-candidates-primary-losses

Losses are piling up for Trump-backed candidates

    2026-08-19T16:23:53.003Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/19/politics/trump-candidates-primary-losses

Nearly 300,000 people turned out to vote Tuesday in Republican primaries in Wyoming and two congressional districts in Florida where President Donald Trump endorsed one of the candidates.

But just 28% of them voted for the candidates he told them to, marking a particularly brutal night for Trump-endorsed candidates.

But that’s been a long time coming as GOP voters have increasingly shrugged off the advice of — and grown somewhat frustrated with the results from — a president who’s looking more like a lame duck.

Republican primary voters have now rejected 10 Trump-endorsed candidates for statewide office or Congress this primary season.

That’s equal to the number who lost in 2018, 2020 and 2024 primaries combined, according to a CNN analysis using Trump endorsements compiled by Ballotpedia.

The number is also approaching the record of 12 Trump-endorsed candidates who lost in the 2022 primary season. That year, there was some question as to whether the party was turning the page on Trump after the January 6, 2021, US Capitol riot.

That doesn’t mean Trump holds no sway over his party, but it’s the latest sign that his grip has loosened.

And the stats tell the tale.

Trump-endorsed candidates lost Tuesday in the Wyoming governor’s race (Megan Degenfelder) and a pair of US House races in Florida (Rep. Cory Mills and Catalina Lauf). That now means:

    • 6 of the 10 losers this year have lost in August alone. In addition to the trio on Tuesday, Minnesota governor candidate Mike Lindell, Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles and Michigan congressional candidate Amir Hassan all lost.
    • 5 Trump-endorsed candidates for governor have lost. Even in 2022, just 3 Trump-backed candidates for governor lost; his losses back then featured more minor statewide offices.
    • Trump’s endorsed candidates have now lost in 42% of the gubernatorial primaries where he wasn’t backing the incumbent (5 out of 12).
    • The 2026 primary season is also arguably worse for Trump than 2022 because that year’s losses were concentrated in one unusual state — Georgia, where the GOP establishment stood up to Trump’s false claims of massive voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election that he lost. In fact, 6 of the 12 losses by Trump-backed candidates in 2022 came in the Peach State alone. In addition, Trump is now an incumbent president.
    • Degenfelder in Wyoming and Lauf in Florida took 2 of the 3 of the lowest shares of the vote of any Trump-endorsed candidates to date. Degenfelder is currently under 30%, while Lauf is at 22%.

And it could get worse for Trump’s picks. It’s possible that the president’s losses could mount further in the weeks to come.

On the few remaining primary dates, Trump has backed Anthony DiLorenzo in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District, as well as appointed Sen. Darline Graham in the South Carolina special election next week.

While the trio of Trump-backed candidates was losing on Tuesday night, Graham was struggling through a debate with her primary runoff opponent, Rep. Ralph Northam. At one point, Graham admitted she was “not … that informed on national security,” punting awkwardly on a question about whether Taiwan is a national security issue for the United States.

If Graham were to lose, she would be just the fourth Trump-backed Senate candidate to lose a primary, after Alabama’s Luther Strange in 2017, West Virginia’s Evan Jenkins in 2018 and Utah’s Trent Staggs in 2024.

These primary losses also come — not coincidentally — as there is increasing evidence that GOP-leaning voters are growing frustrated with actions from a historically unpopular president.

A recent CNN poll found 30%, 40% and even 50% or more Republicans and GOP-leaning independents are registering discontent with Trump on some key issues.

And it seems this unhelpful narrative is starting to register with Trump.

In addition to double endorsing in the June primary runoff for South Carolina governor after it became pretty clear his candidate, Lt. Gov. Pam Evette, would lose, he issued a remarkable missive Wednesday morning about Mills’ loss in Florida.

“I told Congressman Cory Mills of Florida, a friend of mine, to get out of the Race, but he wouldn’t listen,” Trump claimed on social media. “He thought he could win, so who can blame him? We now have a great candidate, Ryan Elijah, running in his place!”

Of course, Trump didn’t apply this pressure publicly. And now it’s the latest evidence calling into question his domination of the party.

Darline Graham says she’s “not that informed on national security” at debate

    August 19, 2026 / 1:25 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Sophia Vlahakis News Associate

Sen. Darline Graham fumbled a question on national security in the South Carolina GOP Senate debate, admitting she was “not that informed on national security” and neglecting to answer a question about Taiwan and the South China Sea.

The novice senator is beginning her sixth week on the job, having been appointed to fill her late brother Lindsey Graham’s seat two days after his sudden death on July 11. Lack of experience is one of the primary criticisms facing her campaign. At Tuesday’s debate, Rep. Ralph Norman, her GOP opponent who also advanced to the runoff behind Graham in the Aug. 11 primary, called her an “unknown candidate” while also representing mainstream Washington.

“I’m just going to be honest here,” Graham answered when asked if Taiwan and the South China Sea are national security issues for the United States. “I’m not that informed on national security, so — but I do support the military.”

To the same question, Norman cited the importance of Taiwan’s chip production and said, “what the president is doing right is he’s enabling Taiwan to defend themselves against China.”

Graham later called China a national security threat, advocating for “any type of bans against China” from AI to farmland, and she also fielded questions on Iran and Israel.

The candid revelation, however, has still drawn scrutiny.

“Lindsey Graham was well informed on the United States’ national security,” former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley wrote on X. “Darline Graham admits she’s not. This is not something you inherit. And it’s critical in the U.S. Senate.”

The Democratic nominee for the Senate seat also chimed in.

“Darline Graham Nordone is asking for six years as South Carolina’s senator — during wartime — yet has the gall to tell voters ‘national security isn’t my thing,’” Dr. Annie Andrews wrote. “South Carolina deserves better.”

Graham is backed by President Trump.

While Lindsey Graham was focused on foreign policy and national security, having returned from a trip to Ukraine to visit President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a day before his death, his sister has vowed to focus on issues affecting South Carolinians. She told CBS News’ Mark Strassmann last week that “affordability is a number one issue, definitely for me.”

Both candidates conveyed strong conservative beliefs and did not vastly differ in their policies. They pledged loyalty to Mr. Trump, agreed Iran was a threat, recognized Israel as an ally and advocated for the SAVE America Act and a ban on birthright citizenship.

Graham ended the night on a fiery note, responding to Norman’s criticism that she canceled a second debate.

“I’d rather be out in South Carolina meeting the voters than here on this stage with you,” Graham chirped back.

She then touted her work in the Senate thus far, including helping pass the Russia Sanctions Bill, co-sponsoring the SAVE America Act and casting a key vote to confirm Attorney General Todd Blanche.

“I’ve done more in 20 days than you have done in 20 years,” Graham said.

The runoff for the Republican nominee will be held on Aug. 25.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is catching heat for defying President Donald Trump on a key energy policy.

The progressive Midwestern leader issued an executive order Tuesday blocking mining permits and leases near a swath of land in northeast Minnesota called the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, a significant portion of which is under federal jurisdiction.

That’s despite President Donald Trump signing legislation in April that reversed a Biden administration-era order blocking new mining leases near the Boundary Waters for a period of 20 years.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., the highest-ranking Minnesotan in Congress, called Walz’s move “stupid” and “dangerous.”

TRUMP’S AMBITIOUS ENERGY BET COULD BE A WINNING HAND AS THE WORLD BURNS MORE OIL, GAS THAN EVER

“This lame duck loser is trying to make us more energy and mineral-dependent on our adversaries,” Emmer told Fox News Digital.

MINNESOTA FRAUD SCANDAL WILL HAUNT FLANAGAN IN HIGH-STAKES SENATE RACE, TOP HOUSE REPUBLICAN WARNS

He said the order would “harm Minnesota (and) good union jobs in northern Minnesota,” and “put our national defense more at risk with our enemies, adversaries like Communist China.”

The legislation, which passed the House and Senate before getting to Trump’s desk, was led by Rep. Pete Stauber, R-Minn.

Walz’s order focuses on the mining of metals like copper and nickel, which have a variety of uses, including boat components, electric vehicle components, military equipment and commercial electronics.

TRUMP GETS MAJOR WIN AGAINST CHINA IN AFRICAN RARE EARTH MINERALS RACE

Northeastern Minnesota is home to the largest known untapped source of nickel and copper in North America, the Duluth Complex.

Emmer argued that a failure to tap into those resources would put the U.S. at a disadvantage to China’s metal mining industry.

Mining is already banned inside the Boundary Waters, but environmental groups who hailed Walz’s order have warned that mining in the protected lands outside its buffer zone still risks harming that inner area, according to MPR News.

“The federal government sold out our canoe country earlier this year by stripping away protections that took hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans’ voices and years of work to secure, all while ignoring science and the will of the public,” Save The Boundary Waters Executive Director Ingrid Lyons said in a statement.

“Now, our governor is doing right by Minnesota by pulling out all of the stops to keep toxic copper mining out of the headwaters of the Boundary Waters, while also calling on our state’s legislature to finish the job permanently. Thank you, Governor, for your actions that save the Boundary Waters today, and for building a foundation from which to protect it for generations to come.”

When asked about environmental groups’ support, Emmer dismissed it as a “false argument.”

“Every one of us is an environmentalist. I make this point, so nobody gets to claim the high ground. It’s like somebody saying, ‘I’m a better conservative than you.’ No, we all care about our environment. We all want clean water. We all want clean air,” he said.

“What you’re literally saying is, ‘I’d rather have the Chinese and other adversaries mine in the old-fashioned ways and not care about leaving the world in a better condition, than allow us to do it right here in Minnesota, where we have one of the top precious metal mines in the world.’ … And we have the most stringent environmental laws in the world, I would argue, that are going to ensure that it’s done safely, and it protects not only the people doing the work, but it protects the environment.”

Washington — A series of victories by leftist congressional candidates — from New York to Colorado to Michigan, and now, Florida — have punctuated the Democratic primaries and defined the midterm campaigns so far, raising questions about the reach of their influence and viability of the progressive-left’s movement as Democrats seek to take control of the House and Senate in November.

As Democrats look to capitalize on the president’s low approval rating, an unpopular war with Iran and pervasive affordability issues this fall, they’re also engaged in a pitched battle over different visions of the party. And although the progressive-left momentum has featured prominently in that storyline so far, the movement may be overstated, falling well short of widespread efforts like the Tea Party, which gripped Republican races in 2010.

David de la Fuente, deputy director for politics and research of Third Way, a centrist Democratic think tank, called the far-left’s ability to defeat three incumbents this cycle an “impressive feat,” but added that “in the big scheme of things, it’s turning blue places even bluer.”

“In the vast majority of districts that will determine who actually controls the speaker’s gavel, these candidates are not running, and they’re certainly not winning,” he said.

It’s a dynamic that may be by design. For one prominent leftist group, Justice Democrats, its focus is on deep-blue districts, not pouring resources into races where “the Democratic Party has an entire infrastructure to flip purple seats,” a spokesperson said.

“Our focus is on ensuring that the representatives of the deepest, most Democratic districts actually represent the base of this party and are actually the ones leading this party forward,” Justice Democrats’ communications director Usamah Andrabi said. “Before we go and try and chase every purple voter in this country — which, obviously, we need to win purple voters to flip Congress — we need to win our base back.”

Whether in deep-blue enclaves or beyond, the congressional hopefuls are part of a larger story about a newly emboldened kind of progressive candidate, some of whom are self-identified democratic socialists, representing an emerging generation of energized voters who are pushing the envelope on issues from healthcare to workers’ rights to U.S. support for Israel — and may move the needle for the party going forward.

    Tracking the progressive left’s rise

By one measure of categorizing the insurgent Democrats, the progressive-left candidates have been winning in the bulk of their races. About two-thirds of House candidates endorsed by two prominent national leftist groups — the Democratic Socialists of America or Justice Democrats — won their primaries this cycle, according to a CBS News analysis. Three were able to oust incumbents, while five won their primaries for an open seat. Two others advanced to the general election alongside the Democratic incumbent in a top-two primary.

Of those 10, seven to nine are expected to make it to Congress next year, all representing deep blue districts.

The wave of victories first came to the forefront with New York’s June primaries, where a trio of wins by insurgent candidates in New York City prompted widespread speculation about the future of the Democratic Party.

Darializa Avila Chevalier, a Justice Democrats and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani-backed candidate, defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat in a huge upset in the 13th District. State Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, another candidate with the same backing, came out victorious in the 7th District. (Another Mamdani-backed candidate, progressive Brad Lander, a former DSA member, also won his primary in the 10th District.)

By the time the New York City contests highlighted the energy on the party’s left flank, candidates backed by leftist groups in a handful of other states had already won their primaries.

In less closely watched races in May, candidates backed by leftist groups, Frederick Haynes in Texas’ 30th Congressional District and Chris Rabb in Pennsylvania’s 3rd District, won their primaries. In early June, Angela Gonzales-Torres and Mai Vang advanced to the general election in California’s 34th and 7th Districts, respectively, and Adam Hamawy won his primary in New Jersey’s 12th District. And in a head-turning victory later that month, democratic socialist Melat Kiros defeated a 15-term incumbent in Colorado’s 1st District.

The trend continued earlier this month in Michigan, where democratic socialist Donavan McKinney ousted the incumbent in the Detroit-area 13th District. Meanwhile, Abdul El-Sayed’s win in the Democratic Senate race garnered widespread attention — despite a smaller-than-expected margin of victory. While El-Sayed isn’t a democratic socialist, his policy views overlap, and he has campaigned with prominent self-described democratic socialists like Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

After Michigan, State Rep. Justin Pearson, who gained national attention as a member of the “Tennessee Three” gun control protest, secured the Democratic nomination in the state’s 9th District. And rounding out the series of victories on Tuesday, Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon pulled off an upset victory to secure the Democratic nomination in the Florida Senate race.

Though the picture has differed from race to race, the candidates have generally espoused a populist, anti-establishment message focused on economic issues, mobilizing their base and overcoming serious funding disadvantages. In many races, healthcare is at the center, while in others, issues like AI and data centers or taking on corruption in politics are center stage.

But in other races, the progressive-left has fallen short, the bids being subject to the same forces that can beleaguer any campaign.

Former Rep. Cori Bush lost her primary bid in Missouri’s 1st District, while in Illinois, Junaid Ahmed and Kat Abughazaleh lost their primaries in the 8th and 9th districts, as did Nida Allam in her race to represent North Carolina’s 4th District. In California’s 11th District, Saikat Chakrabarti, a former chief of staff to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, failed to advance to the general election in the race to replace former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. On Tuesday, while Nixon pulled off her victory in Florida, democratic socialist Oliver Larkin fell to Rep. Jared Moskowitz in Florida’s 25th District.

Though the picture is mixed for the congressional hopefuls, general sentiments toward democratic socialist candidates and ideas may be warming. The democratic socialist label is viewed positively by about half of Democrats, and 58% have a favorable impression of socialism, according to a CBS News poll released Sunday. A Washington Post-Ipsos poll released last month found that three-quarters of Democrats said they would be open to supporting a democratic socialist candidate for president. Another survey released this month by CNBC found nearly half of Americans ages 18-34 hold favorable or very favorable views of democratic socialism.

    Another Tea Party movement?

Some have drawn comparisons between the recent energy around leftist candidates and the Tea Party movement in 2010, when insurgent Republicans won a majority of the 63 seats that delivered House control to the GOP.

The scale of the Tea Party movement was much broader, with 138 Tea Party candidates running for the House and Senate that year. Today, there are fewer competitive seats, thanks to gerrymandering, meaning there are only about 40 seats in the House viewed as in-play.

“It was much more stylistic than meaningfully changing politics in ways that transferred power from the political establishment to many Americans who were agitated at the time,” Ashik Siddique, a co-chair for DSA’s National Political Committee, said of the distinction between the Tea Party movement and the progressive left.

De la Fuente compared this year’s wins to the victories of a group of four first-term, progressive congresswomen, including Ocasio-Cortez — known as “The Squad” — in 2018, during the last two years of President Trump’s first term.

“You saw Tea Party darlings actually flip districts from blue to red,” he said. “I would be hard-pressed to point to a single Justice Democrat or DSA member who’s going to flip a district from red to blue.”

If Democrats were to win control of the House, Senate and the White House in 2028, that would present a test for progressive insurgents, according to De la Fuente.

“Do members like Kiros and [Avila Chevalier] try to tank a Democratic president’s agenda? I think that’s going to be the big question mark,” he said.

In the more immediate future, how the leftist Democrats will impact Congress remains to be seen. On the Senate side, a push to oust Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York has found legs among the progressive left. El-Sayed, now the Democratic nominee in the Michigan Senate race, has been among those calling for new leadership.

On the House side, progressive-left candidates don’t appear poised to challenge Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ leadership. But they could complicate his ability to keep the party united.

Jeffries, 56, is poised to become the first Black speaker of the House next year if Democrats secure a majority in the chamber in November. The New York Democrat, who represents a Brooklyn-area district, is more progressive than Schumer and hasn’t received the same pushback against his leadership, though some have not committed to supporting Jeffries.

Speaking at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Atlanta last week, Jeffries acknowledged that “we are in an important moment of generational change.” Asked specifically about the DSA candidates on the ballot, Jeffries, who has generally supported incumbents, said, “I think we’ll see what happens in terms of what the caucus looks like on the other side of the midterm elections.”

Jeffries said on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” on Sunday that he doesn’t support the DSA agenda, pointing to planks like defunding the police, open borders and abolishing the Senate. But he acknowledged that should the DSA-backed candidates be elected in November, they “will be part of the House Democratic caucus.”

“It’s going to be a broad caucus,” Jeffries added.

But the insurgent candidates “do not answer to any master,” Ocasio-Cortez, a member of her local DSA chapter, said on ABC News’ “This Week” earlier this month.

“They are not beholden to any corporate interest or any party boss, and they are completely independent, which allows them to be responsible to their communities and the people that elected them,” she said. “In many ways, that makes our movement stronger.”

With increasingly narrow margins in the House in recent years, even a small number of progressive-left lawmakers could tip the scale on important votes, Siddique said.

“That’s a solid bloc of people who can make the difference on plenty of votes, especially if Democrats do end up with a majority in Congress, or a margin where seven-plus candidates could make the difference,” Siddique said. “That is a lot of leverage.”

Andrabi noted it depends on the margin of the potential Democratic majority.

“If it’s a margin that looks close to the size of our bloc, then it seems like our bloc will have ample amount of power to dictate or demand more of the Democratic Party,” Andrabi said.

Asked whether he expects leftists to be a thorn in the side of Democratic leadership if they have the majority, much like the House Freedom Caucus to GOP leaders, Siddique said only that “we expect people to advance the policies that helped elect our candidates as Democratic socialists.”

“That can mean agitating,” he said, “or it can mean collaborating with whoever wants to advance shared goals.”

Jason Watson, the US service member who was arrested on the steps of the US Capitol last month after calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump, has been detained once again —just days after he criticized the president in an exclusive CNN interview.

The US Air Force major was “ordered into pretrial confinement” Tuesday, a US Air Force spokesperson told CNN. He is currently being detained at a county facility in Maryland and is on a military hold, according to the public information officer for that detention center.

“Military members are required to comply with the Uniform Code of Military Justice and all applicable regulations,” the Air Force spokesperson said in a statement. “Based on probable cause to support allegations of continued misconduct, Maj. Watson was ordered into pretrial confinement on Aug. 18, 2026. Maj. Watson is presumed innocent and will be afforded all rights under Rule for Courts-Martial 305 as his pretrial confinement is reviewed.”

It is unclear what allegations of misconduct Watson might be facing. CNN has asked the Air Force for further details.

Watson’s attorney Chris Mutimer said he has not spoken to Watson yet but suspects that his appearance on CNN earlier this week played a role in his detention.

On Monday, Watson spoke with CNN’s Erin Burnett and criticized the president, whose impeachment and removal he continues to call for.

“What is happening with President Trump is not normal. He has failed us,” Watson said. “And not only is he a failure as president, he is flagrantly violating the Constitution, breaking the law, engaged in rampant corruption and is killing Americans. And that is unacceptable to me and it should be unacceptable to all of us.”

Airman arrested after protesting Trump in uniform speaks out: Trump ‘has failed us’

Public dissent within active-duty military ranks is rare as service members are required to follow orders in accordance with the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which criminalizes contemptuous words against the president, vice president, Congress and other top officials under Article 88.

“Maj. Watson’s personal statements do not reflect the views or policies of the Department of the Air Force,” the agency spokesperson said in the statement Wednesday.

Watson was previously arrested on July 1 on the US Capitol steps after he gave a speech calling for the impeachment and removal of Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

US Capitol Police told CNN at the time that members of the public are not allowed to demonstrate on the steps of the House unless they are accompanied by a member of Congress. Watson was “escorted” to the steps by a member, who then “left the area,” according to police.

Watson was wearing his uniform during the demonstration. Military regulation bans wearing a uniform while participating in political activities, though to date Watson had not been charged with an infraction tied to the demonstration.

Watson told CNN earlier this week that he is willing to pay the price of speaking out against the administration.

“We just have to be willing to accept that we can change what is happening in our country if we’re just willing to pay a price for it,” Watson said. “So all that I could do was ask myself what’s the highest price that I’m willing to pay. And this is what I ultimately came up with.”

Woman told House Ethics Committee that Rep. Jimmy Gomez sexually assaulted her, attorneys say

    2026-08-19 3:35 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Caitlin Yilek Politics Reporter

Washington — A woman told the House Ethics Committee that Rep. Jimmy Gomez sexually assaulted her, according to her attorneys, a claim that comes as the panel investigates sexual misconduct allegations against the California Democrat.

The bipartisan committee said Monday that it’s looking into allegations against Gomez, including that he engaged “in inappropriate sexual contact with a House staffer.”

Gomez acknowledged in a statement Monday that he “made personal mistakes outside my marriage” and that his “actions were consensual in nature.”

The attorneys for the unnamed woman pushed back on the assertion that Gomez’s actions were consensual.

“We represent one of the women who was interviewed by the House Committee on Ethics about her experience of sexual harassment and assault by Representative Jimmy Gomez. Contrary to Representative Gomez’s assertion in his statement, his actions were not ‘consensual in nature’ with respect to our client. We fully expect that the House Committee on Ethics will come to the same conclusion in its investigation,” said her attorneys, Lisa J. Banks and Sarah E. Nesbitt.

CBS News has reached out to Gomez’s office for comment on the allegations. Banks and Nesbitt did not identify their client, and CBS News has not verified her claims.

In his statement earlier this week, Gomez said he was “ready to cooperate with the Ethics Committee inquiry and provide it with whatever information it might need.”

“Out of respect for my family and the ongoing process, I will have no further comment,” he added.

In announcing the probe on Monday, the Ethics Committee said that “[n]o other public comment will be made on this matter except in accordance with Committee rules.”

The investigation comes as the House is poised to consider legislation to overhaul the chamber’s ethics rules. The proposal would, among other things, ban lawmakers from having sexual relationships with any congressional staffers, not just those under their direct supervision.
